Superman: The Man of Steel #23 (July 1993)

REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN! In this issue: Steel vs. Superboy! I mean, "Superman” vs. “Superman”. The Man of Steel is battling some hoodlums armed with hi-tech killer weapons when the Metropolis Kid decides to butt in and "save him" in front of the cameras that follow him 24/7. (Side note: Was Superboy the first '90s reality TV star?) The Kid draws all the firepower to himself... accidentally causing the bad guys to shoot down a Daily Planet helicopter containing Lois Lane. The chopper blows up, signaling the death of a classic and beloved DC Comics character: Frank the helicopter pilot. RIP.

Lois, meanwhile, manages to jump out of the exploding chopper in time (probably out of pure muscle memory) and is rescued by Steel in a rather familiar-looking scene.

Lois tries to turn the tragic situation into an exclusive interview with Steel, but Steel has something more important to do: chewing Superboy's butt for scaring off those criminals he was trying to interrogate (and, you know, causing a man's death). The Kid is like "I'm da real Superman, yo!" and bails... but as he flies away, he actually starts questioning his half-assed approach to superheroics. I'm sure Frank's wife and 12 children would find great comfort in that.

Meanwhile, Steel is approached by Lex Luthor Jr., who wants to offer him a job as one of his armored security guards (because having one S-shielded superhero in his pocket isn't enough for him). To butter Steel up, Lex offers him the location of the White Rabbit -- aka, the lady distributing all those highly advanced weapons to street gangs. Steel thanks Lex for the tip and immediately ditches him, making it clear that his services aren’t for sale.

Steel drops by the White Rabbit’s penthouse, and she turns out to be an old flame from his time as a weapons designer for the military. Things almost get steamy for a second in there, until Steel remembers that this lady has made him indirectly responsible for countless deaths (all those weapons are his design). Once she takes the hint that Steel won’t work for her (either), White Rabbit just shoots him point blank with one of those big-ass guns, launching him off the building and into a convenient tanker parked outside.

Superboy (who was following Steel to apologize for being a dick) flies in just in time to pull Steel’s body from the resulting tanker explosion:

By the time Superboy and Steel return to White Rabbit’s penthouse, the place is already empty. The two Supermen then bond over that whole “we’ve both caused innocent people to die today” thing and part amicably. Awww!

Plotline-Watch:

Ponytailed scumbag Jeb Friedman, having given Lois Lane WEEKS to recover from her fiance’s supposed death, urges her to “forget Clark” and go to Cairo with him. Don Sparrow says: “I hesitate to even mention that the hated Jeb Friedman appears here, and even Jimmy doesn’t want Lois rebounding with him. Serious question, though: are we supposed to hate Jeb? Or is it just happenstance?” If we weren’t supposed to hate Jeb, would they have given him a ponytail, Don?

After meeting Steel, Lois reflects on the fact that the other Supermen may look like Clark, but Steel is the only one who acts like him. Obviously she doesn’t think Clark’s already been reincarnated as an adult black man, but she does seriously wonder if ghostly possession is a real thing.

I love how efficiently Steel’s backstory is presented in this issue. As he and White Rabbit are about to lock lips, we see a handful of black-and-white panels showing the two working together for the military, hooking up, finding out his weapons were being used against innocents in Qurac, and then a flashback-within-the-flashback of Steel’s grandparents having just become victims of gang violence. It’s only half a page but it tells you everything you need to know about this dude and his motivation.

Superboy burns his hands while rescuing Steel, even though a clone of Superman should be equally invulnerable. Hmm. Hmmmm. Hmmmmmm.

The issue ends with Supergirl telling Lex she’s going off to look for Superboy, which leads to the next issue of Adventures.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like none of the other four Superman titles seems as swayed by the importance of the storyline as SMOS.  What do I mean? I mean that when it’s a big storyline, like Panic in the Sky, or Doomsday, the art on the title really seems to rise to the occasion, and there’s some standout stuff being produced.  But in the meantime, when a story doesn’t feel as important, the quality seems to dip a little. To me, this is one of those issues.  We begin with the cover, and it’s not one of Bogdanove’s best.  Sure, his artwork could be called cartoony at the best of times, but this one really took on a loose, loony tunes sketchiness, particularly in Superboy’s “ain’t I a stinker?” expression and giant wall of teeth. He looks less like a 16 year old than he resembles Rex Leech, a character we’ll come to know better in time.

Inside, the story gets off to a slow start, as we’re abruptly thrown into a video of wannabe gangsters, moving in on where they think they’ll find John Henry Irons.  The double page splash revealing his location is an exciting one, and Dennis Janke does some interesting things with his hatching to indicate the shine of the metal, leaving certain areas unhatched to show a glimmer. 

Bog’s depictions of The White Rabbit continue to push the envelope for how much skin a comic code approved book can show, both on page 7, and then later in the book. [Max: This next sequence of panels burned itself into my young mind. Because of the cool panel layout, I mean.]

Page 8 brings us a long sought after in-comics cameo.  If you’ll recall, back on one of my first reviews on this site, I interviewed the great Tom Grummett and asked him if there were any Easter Eggs that we should look out for while we were reading.  He answered that "My personal favorite moment was when Jon Bogdanove drew me in a scene with Jimmy Olsen in one issue of Man of Steel. I’m the one with the moose on his shirt. Happy hunting.”  Well, we need hunt no more, as a certain fellow pops up, arguing with Jimmy Olsen, and what’s that on his shirt?  A moose?! Found you! [Max: Are we the first on the internet to point out this cameo? I don’t have time to look it up, so let’s go with “Yes”.]

I also love the little gag in the lettering, where the first part of “Saskatchewan” (Tom’s home province) is shown as “Saskatch” and then below that Bog has written “W-1”, phonetically completing the phrase.   It’s also a very Neal Adams-y couple of panels when Jimmy and Tom start to get heated debating who the real Superman is.  [Max: I wonder if the Neal Adams-esque panels above are homaging a specific Adams comic, or just his “intense argument” poses in general...]  Then a page later, there’s an unmistakable rendering of another Super-Teamster, none other than group editor Mike Carlin, scanning the police radio for scoops.

As the story progresses, there’s a great shot of the Metropolis Kid (who they refer to as Superboy on this page, without a rebuttal from the Kid) showboating and holding one hand behind his back.  But, on the page that follows, a pretty heavy end for Daily Planet chopper pilot “Frank”, made all the more sickening by the lack of concern from the Kid leading up to this point. 

Some great visual callback on page 12, as the mob scene when the Man of Steel rescues Lois Lane recalls the meet-cute at the shuttle disaster wayyyy back in MOS #1.

The scene were John Henry confronts the Kid about his carelessness is well-done, even if it gives way to another mention of the preposterous ‘spirit-walk-in’ idea, which even these characters seem to find tenuous.  

The flashback with White Rabbit does a good job of filling in the gaps of John Henry’s history (interesting how similar Irons’ motivation is to that of Tony Stark’s, at least in the movies) but it’s an odd scene—not just because of the aforementioned vamping from White Rabbit, but also Irons’ inaction in the scene—he went there to capture her, but mostly just stands around and then lets her stroll back over to the bed, where a weapon is clearly visible from where he’s standing. [Max: Can’t imagine what else he could be looking at.]

As The Metropolis Kid rescues The Man of Steel, we get more looney tunes-style comedy, when the Kid comedically blows on his burning hands, trying to cool them. They seem to be working hard to establish how different his powers are from Kal-El’s, though they eventually go back on almost all of this stuff.

Moving on, we get a really nice look at Lois at a rainy window, once again musing on how the Man of Steel, while physically the most removed from Kal-El, seems to embody his “soul” more than the rest.

STRAY OBSERVATIONS:

Is the cameraman gangster supposed to be a riff on Spike Lee? The glasses seem pretty similar to ones Spike wore at the time.

How is it that we never noticed such a giant, futuristic tower on the Metropolis skyline before?

Jimmy Olsen wearing a Spin Doctors t-shirt is a little too meta for my head, since one of their biggest hits was “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues”.  What does the DC Universe Jimmy think when he hears a song about himself, lusting after Lois Lane?  They were also one of my favourite bands when this issue came out, so my mind was doubly blown.

What is it with Lex hanging onto VHS tapes?  Thank God he never got his hands on that one of Big Barda! [Max: Dammit, I’d JUST managed to erase that from my mind, Don.]

Hello friends! Are you all jazzed-up on Wonder Woman now that the DCU finally has a good movie? That’s great! Me too! But it doesn’t have to end there! Wonder Woman has a long history of great comic books that have long been overlooked my mainstream nerd culture!

While plenty of us have read foundational DC books like Batman: Year One, All-Star Superman, or Watchmen, Wondie has plenty of books that are just as central to her character as well! The above image is a general recommended reading list, and I certainly haven’t read all of them, but I can give a few recommendations on the ones I have!

Wonder Woman, by George Perez

This is pretty much your foundational modern Wonder Woman. Nearly everything about the character as she is today draws from this sensational run. It’s widely regarded among Wondie fans as one of the most quintessential runs in the character’s history. If you want to wholly *GET* Wonder Woman, this is a fantastic place to start.

Wonder Woman by Gail Simone

What can I say about Gail Simone that hasn’t already been said? Deadpool, Batgirl, Secret Six, Birds of Prey, the woman just has so many legendary comic book runs. And her run on Wonder Woman is no different. She wasn’t on the book for a super long time, but her run is one of the best!

Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello

This one I understand is a bit polarizing among some on Tumblr. I get that there’s a number of people who don’t like the changes Azzarello made to the amazonian culture, specifically how they deal with male outsiders and male children. However, consider that characters are not interesting without flaws, and seeing for once a definite black spot on the seemingly-perfect Amazons was pretty interesting!

In addition, the book has fantastic art style, and does a lot to re-imagine the greek gods in a modern, almost horror-esque way. This run’s take on Wondie is that of a warrior goddess, so if you want a Diana that’s ready to throw down, this is the book for you!

Wonder Woman: Hiketeia by Greg Rucka

Wonder Woman has taken a sworn oath to protect a young girl! But when she finds out that this girl has murdered her sister’s killer, this puts her at odds with Batman, who is determined that the girl face trial! A modern greek tragedy penned by the masterful Greg Rucka, and an absolutely fantastic one-shot graphic novel!

JLA: A League of One by Christopher Moeller

An unstoppable dragon has awoken from its slumber! An amazonian seer has predicted that it will DESTROY the Justice League! To prevent her friends from dying, Wonder Woman must face the dragon ALONE! Even if it means fighting her friends to stop them from helping her!

Wonder Woman: Odyssey by J. Michael Straczynski

A pseudo-elseworlds story about an amnesiac Wonder Woman rediscovering her place in the world and her destiny. Featuring all-star talent, a gripping suspense story, and my personal favorite Wonder Woman costume ever. 

Wonder Woman by Bill Messner-Loebs

Hey, did you know that for a while Wonder Woman was a space pirate? This run is fucking nuts and I love every page of it. If you want a run where some guys are just trying to tell compelling and INCREDIBLY varied Wonder Woman adventures, give this one a shot!

Wonder Woman: by Greg Rucka

There is a current Wonder Woman ongoing! It’s by Greg Rucka, who has previously done great work with the character. It’s called Wonder Woman: The Lies. Full disclosure, I haven’t read any of this. But if you want a Wonder Woman comic that’s currently ongoing, just pick up Volume 1 and start from there. There’s currently three books out, so there’s plenty of reading material. 

Final Thoughts

Really, anything in the guide I posted first is a good read. Comics are an incredibly small medium, and need all the sales they can get. If you’ve seen the movie and you’re hungry for more, there’s a LOT of material. The character’s been around for over 70 years at this point. So please, head down to your local comic shop and pick up some Wonder Woman! Diana believes in you, and I do too!

Reading Friday

American Gods by Neil Gaiman (I read the Tenth Anniversary edition, but didn't notice any important differences between that and the original). I've read this book before, but it's probably been a decade or more, and so reading it now was as much an experience of rediscovery as it was of straightforward narrative. There were certain scenes and images and even lines that have remained burned in my memory after all this time, some of them important to the plot and others mysteriously random (a car sitting on the ice of a lake and holding secrets within, Wednesday's con with the broken ATM, Shadow's cellmate, No man, proclaimed Donne, is an Island, and he was wrong. If we were not islands, we would be lost, drowned in each other's tragedies., an indentured servant's belief in brownies and redcaps, a body hung on a tree for nine days), and other things just as prominent that I'd forgotten entirely (Laura's ghost, Shadow's love of coin tricks, the Men in Black, the Buffalo man), as well as a few that I remembered but which didn't actually happen (a scene with Jesus that I suppose must have actually been part of some fanfic I read). To be honest, I didn't expect to like this book, or at least not as much as I liked it back when I first read it. In the years since some of the shine has fallen off Gaiman for me, and I haven't liked much of his new work, and so I suppose I projected that backwards and assumed I'd outgrown him. Such was not the case. Or, well, there are several plot twists that work better on first acquaintance when they can be genuinely shocking, and I do think the climax doesn't quite hold up to all of the preceding tension and anticipation, but none of that matters, not really. The book sucked me from the opening page and I could barely put it down until I was done. The prose is surprisingly stark, Hemingway-esque – so few adjectives and descriptions, and that's normally not a style I even like, but here it's magically compelling, always making me want just a little more, just a few more pages. I guess I should actually summarize the plot, huh? Though I sort of assume everyone already knows it. Shadow, a big tough-looking late-20s man with a secret nerdy thoughtful soul, has spent three years in prison for a dumb small-time robbery that went wrong. He's released three days early when news reaches him that his beloved wife has died in a car accident. Grieving, lost, not exactly suicidal but not exactly enjoying life either, Shadow has nowhere to go (it's hard to get a job with violence crime on your record) when he accepts an offer to be the bodyguard/driver to Mr Wednesday, a man who quickly turns out to a conman and then turns out to actually be Odin, as in the Norse God. He tells Shadow that every immigrant to America ever brought the literal incarnations of their beliefs along with them, but as those beliefs are forgotten the Old Gods are losing their power and then their lives. Wednesday is traveling the country trying to organize the Old Gods to declare war on the New Gods (Technology, Media, etc) who are benefitting from a current glut of belief. Shadow, inevitably, is drawn into the conflict, though the real heart of the book is more his need to start living again than all of this metaphysical drama. The modern-day plot is intercut with small asides illustrating the lives of various immigrant believers; my favorite was always and still is the story of twins taken from Africa and sold as slaves: There was a girl, and her uncle sold her. Put like that it seems so simple. No man, proclaimed Donne, is an island, and he was wrong. If we were not islands, we would be lost, drowned in each other's tragedies. We are insulated (a word that means, literally, remember, made into an island) from the tragedy of others, by our island nature and by the repetitive shape and form of the stories. The shape does not change: there was a human being who was born, lived and then by some means or other, died. There. You may fill in the details from your own experience. As unoriginal as any other tale, as unique as any other life. Lives are snowflakes- forming patterns we have seen before, as like one another as peas in a pod (and have you ever looked at peas in a pod? I mean, really looked at them? There's not a chance you'll mistake one for another, after a minute's close inspection) but still unique. Without individuals we see only numbers, a thousand dead, a hundred thousand dead, "casualties may rise to a million." With individual stories, the statistics become people- but even that is a lie, for the people continue to suffer in numbers that themselves are numbing and meaningless. Look, see the child's swollen, swollen belly and the flies that crawl at the corners of his eyes, this skeletal limbs: will it make it easier for you to know his name, his age, his dreams, his fears? To see him from the inside? And if it does, are we not doing a disservice to his sister, who lies in the searing dust beside him, a distorted distended caricature of a human child? And there, if we feel for them, are they now more important to us than a thousand other children touched by the same famine, a thousand other young lives who will soon be food for the flies' own myriad squirming children? We draw our lines around these moments of pain, remain upon our islands, and they cannot hurt us. They are covered with a smooth, safe, nacreous layer to let them slip, pearllike, from our souls without real pain. Fiction allows us to slide into these other heads, these other places, and look out through other eyes. And then in the tale we stop before we die, or we die vicariously and unharmed, and in the world beyond the tale we turn the page or close the book, and we resume our lives. A life that is, like any other, unlike any other. And the simple truth is this: There was a girl, and her uncle sold her. It's not a needlessly dark book – there are funny moments, silly moments, clever moments – but it's a book that is fundamentally shaped around the concept and power of belief, of blood, and of human sacrifice, that last one to an extent that I think I never before noticed. It's a book for winter, when the light is fading and there's only one thing that will bring it back. It's a 500-page version of "Those Who Walk Away From Omelas". And I love it, even if I'm having trouble articulating why. I also couldn't help but wonder what the TV adaptation will look like. Even aside from the difficulties in translating any written work into an audio-visual medium, this one has a vital plot twist that turns on two words that are spelled differently but which sound the same when spoken out-loud, as well as a main character who is resolutely, defiantly taciturn, the vast majority of his personality hidden beneath the surface like the metaphorical 9/10ths of an iceberg. It's gonna be a challenge.

When all is said - final reflection

I came into this course in the beginning of the year having a very clear idea of the story I wanted to tell, and not a clear clue about the way I would choose to tell it through the medium of animation. The process, technique and visual style of my film in particular went through several major changes through both pre-production and production as I was figuring out a way to play up my assets and ťenhance the story while simultaneously meeting the time constraints

My initial plan was to animate my entire film digitally on TV Paint. This seemed like the best option to go for since I was intending on using full palettes of colour and am very familiar with the digital animation process. That said, digital is definitely not the medium i feel the most comfortable with nor the one I’m technically strongest at. I wanted to supplement the digital animation with a hand drawn element as well for it to have a personal touch, and decided on the wings specifically to be drawn traditionally with high detail and then animated like puppets on After Effects. Upon drawing more concepts, and with advice from colleagues and supervisors  I abandoned this plan.

My personal penchant is for illustration and I generally love spending a long time adding detail into drawings, and I definitely wanted this to translate into my film. Since this one is the big final project, I decided that I’ll go with a more personal approach and instead decided to use fully traditional pencil-on-paper animation.

My process in hand-drawing Flight was a messy and learning one. I didn’t account for how long a part of the process had to be allocated to scanning, batch editing, figuring out how to piece the different bits of animation together digitally. Entering production, I was really enjoying drawing traditionally but quickly got discouraged by how much more work it comes with than just animating. Eventually, after fighting the school's batch scanner and after picturelock when I started running really short on time and looking for shortcuts, I purchased my own batch scanner. It definitely made things a bit easier since I was able to scan a scene I just drew right away at home and start cleaning them up and checking the animation.

Because I wanted to save on paper and because of my general style, I didn’t go with the usual workflow of roughs and clean ups, but rather drew fully rendered keyframes first and inbetweened them in full detail later, keeping my drawings fairly clean. Although I really enjoyed this more straight ahead way of animating, this was constraining in that I didn’t have a good idea of how a certain thing moves. Essentially I allocated more attention to individual frames than to the whole movement and scene overall.

Initially while deciding upon traditional, I was fully intent on still going through with digital flat colouring and a very polished disney-esque aesthetic. Unfortunately this was an overly ambitious idea on my part. The grainy texture of the pencil lines made it impossible for me to colour-fill, meaning I would have had to hand-colour every frame. Additionally, if I were to go for the aesthetic I originally planned out for the backgrounds, I would have had to block out the silhouettes of animation first with white, just for the lines of the animation not to blend in with the lines of the background.

To avoid doing all of this, I ended up deciding upon a very minimalistic approach with colours. I added it to the backgrounds only whole avoiding the spots that had animation on top of them. Similarly, I covered up the parts of the background with animation on top with white blur for the lines not to get confusing. Even though this isn’t at all what I was aiming for, I do quite like the look i ended up with, it’s reminiscent of watercolour illustrations for children’s books, and the pale colours distract a lot less from my lines than vivid ones would.

The sound design and music were fun albeit stressful to work on. Though I originally trying to come up with an original piano melody on my own, I found that Satie’s Je te Veux was actually a wonderful fit, not too tragic and on fact quite optimistic but with a slight melancholy to it. I conveniently also found a nice recording of the song with a licence for sale for 35$. The major problem I ran into with my music was not being able to alter the pitch and speed of the track to accommodate my timing without a significant loss of quality. This lead to unfortunate last-minute timing changes

There are so many things I would change and improve if I were to remake this project but there’s no use crying over the film’s shortcomings. Although it doesn’t look like what I wanted, I think it does a decent job at telling the story that I wanted to tell.

Last weekend was the 24 in 48 Readathon — the goal of which is to read 24 out of 48 hours.  I participated and read a couple of prose books, but mostly a big ol’ pile of comics (12 to be exact).  I also learned some things about myself… I like to read, but cramming 24 hours of reading into one weekend is just too much for me.  I probably won’t be participating in a readathon again anytime soon, but it was a great way to read my way through a bunch of books.  All of these books are stand-alones, so this is a great list if you’re looking to pick up a no-strings-attached read:

Even the Giants by Jesse Jacobs I’m a huge Jesse Jacobs fan, his art toes the line between adorable and creepy and psychedelic.  Even the Giants a collection of short comics, some with interconnected stories and some stand-alones.  My favorites in the collection centered on two dudes who appear to be living on the surface of microbe. I’ll read everything Jacobs publishes, but if you’re new to his work I’d recommend Safari Honeymoon as a starting point.

The Oven by Sophie Goldstein I love a good short story.  I find it immensely satisfying to read a story where the author whittled down a huge idea to just a handful of pages but didn’t lose any of the storytelling magic.  The Oven is a perfect example of a great short story and a great example of how sci-fi world building doesn’t require hundreds of pages of exposition.

An Entity Observes All Things by Box Brown Another collection of short comics.  I found these OK, but not particularly memorable.  Brown has a very clean drawing style, that I find very well suited to his nonfiction and biographical comics.  I’m still anxiously awaiting his Andy Kaufman bio that’s due out next week.

Buffy: The High School Years – Freaks & Geeks by Faith Erin Hicks I almost never actually enjoy tv/movie tie-in comics, but I keep trying to read them.  This fell totally flat for me and just made me want to rewatch Buffy (which you absolutely cannot do in the middle of a readathon).

Sacred Heart by Liz Suburbia This was probably my favorite comic I read over the weekend.  High school punks living in a semi-dystopian town where all the adults have disappeared and mysterious murders are happening.  By the end of the story we still don’t have much of an idea about about the bigger picture, but I felt like I was friends with all of the characters.

The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill This was absolutely adorable and I think that my dog might secretly be a Tea Dragon.  He’s tiny and moody and grumpy, but he doesn’t grow tea leaves out of his head, so I’m not 100% sure.  I continue to maintain the view that we are in the golden age of all-ages comics and The Tea Dragon Society is only helping my case.

Bubbles Gondola by Renaud Dillies This comic was a bit of an odd duck.  A French import, we have the book shelved in the children’s area of the library I work at… but it’s not really for kids.  The protagonist is a chain-smoking, hard-drinking mouse who works as a writer and is currently experiencing a bad case of writer’s block.  Yes, the characters are cute anthropomorphized animals, but the subject matter isn’t really for kids.

First Year Healthy and Big Kids by Michael DeForge I’m combining the two Michael DeForge books I read because they were both short and I never know what to say about Michael DeForge comics.  I always look forward to reading them, and then I’m always left with the feeling of “what the hell did I just read?”  First Year Healthy follows a young woman living in a small town and also features a magical cat.  Big Kids is about a teenager who turns into a sentient, mobile tree.

Malinky Robot by Sonny Liew Yet another collection of short comics.  I think that Sonny Liew might be one of the most talented people working in comics today; his artwork is meticulous and beautiful and the action always reads clearly even though every frame is crammed full of details.  Malinky Robot follows the misadventures of two Dickensian cyberpunk orphans, Atari and Oliver.  They steal bikes, they go fishing, they have your standard kid-adventures in a crumbling dystopian Blade Runner-esque city.

The Longest Day of the Future by Lucas Varela Another of my favorites from the weekend, this wordless graphic novel follows two warring factions living in the same city (the bunny-eared faction and the pig-eared faction) as they vie for solo control of the city.  The whole vibe was very much reminiscent of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (one of my very favorite sci-fi movies).

The Incantations of Daniel Johnston by Ricardo Cavolo and Scott McClanahan Ricardo Cavolo is one of my favorite illustrators working today.  His drawings/paintings are messy and expressionistic and far closer to something you’d generally see in an art gallery than in a comic book.  I’m always on the fence when it comes to people making money off of Daniel Johnston’s story… there’s the uncomfortable question of whether he’s being taken advantage of, but in the case of The Incantations of Daniel Johnston it’s clear that Cavolo and McClanahan are huge fans of his music and the book reads like a case for Johnston’s canonization.
