3 whumpy anime to check out this spring!

Go Go Loser Ranger is a heroes vs. villains anime where the villains are the good guys and the heroes are downright evil. Having wiped out all the powerful monsters more than a decade ago, the heroes keep the weakest monsters captive, to parade around and torment on a weekly basis while the public believes otherwise. Because they're immortal when hit with most weapons, they'll always reform to be hurt over and over again, despite feeling all the pain.

Footsoldier D is one of those weak monsters, an immortal shapeshifter made of dust, called a "duster". After escaping the heroes' arena, he forms a plan to kill the heroes and steal the few weapons they have that can permanently kill dusters, freeing the rest of his kind. Given that he has the constitution of a porcelain doll, he can't use strength to fight: he has to rely on wits, stealth, shapeshifting (despite knowing very little about humans or the outside world), and a shaky alliance with a double-agent ranger who seems to be taking advantage of him for her own gain.

An Archdemon's Dilemma is a romantic comedy stuffed to the brim with popular whump tropes. Zagan is a demonic sorcerer who attends an auction for the possessions of another recently-killed sorcerer, when he sees that one of those "possessions" is an elf slave, Nephelia. Having had a destitute, harsh past himself, he feels a rush of sympathy and buys her way out, vowing to ensure her safety. However, Nephelia is terrified, believing she's about to be used as a sacrifice in a dark magic ritual. And unfortunately for both of them, Zagan is a socially awkward loser who sucks at communicating.

It's surreal seeing something that looks like it could be a caretaker-new-master whump fic as an actual, fully-realized anime. It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously despite the premise, leaning heavily on the "comedy" part of romantic comedy, and is mostly just a silly time with lots of whump-adjacent stuff thrown in. Fanfic-y to the point of "there's only one bed" being an actual line.

The Grimm Variations is an anthology of horror retellings of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales. With each episode being written and directed by different people, it varies wildly in quality, with episodes ranging from laughably bad to incredibly good, but I'm here to talk about episode 2: Little Red Riding Hood.

The Little Red Riding Hood takes place in a dystopian future where the upper and middle class use virtual reality technology to augment their reality. One man, Grey, is tired of this and craves the real: specifically, the feeling of real blood spraying him as he murders countless women, his wealth and connections protecting him from consequences. But when this serial killer makes the mistake of targeting a woman called Scarlet, he finds himself on the other side of the knife. This episode is a complete and utter gorefest with multiple onscreen torture scenes.

This isn't even my favorite episode of the series, it's like my 3rd favorite. But episode 2 is the one with the gruesome torture scene, so it's the one that goes in this post.

Current book stack: I am trying very hard to finish the wolves series by Maggie Stiefvater. I loved her Raven Cycle and wanted to read more, but somehow the Wolves of Mercy Falls fail to grab me in the same way, so it takes a long time to actually begin reading again. Not sure about the reason, maybe because it's an earlier work, or maybe the characters just don't click with me, I don't know.

Last film: I watch films so rarely, I have literally no idea. It was probably Barbie. Or maybe Dune. I loved visuals in both, but not so much the overall experience.

Last show: Now this one's easier XD I rewatched the first two seasons of Alex Rider and finished the last one. I'm kinda sad I won't see those dorks anymore, even if I found the last season's writing the weakest. Oh, and if anime counts, I've begun watching Dungeon Meshi and it's funny and cute and sometimes creepy (but what the hell is going on with Netflix subtitles, they're fucking lying in every sentence - do yourself a favour and watch a softsub not by them). It's been a while since I've watched anything ongoing. Having to wait a week for the next episode is an unfamiliar sensation by now XD

Current obsession: It is, most likely, still Gotham. I keep thinking about it so often, writing bits here and there, and plan to rewatch it again. It's funny, but nothing has really come close since Gotham that has this particular obsession value.

I can't remember if you or I ever replied to our last message? Doesn't matter. I can only remember parts of our last conversation before you went back to school. Wait.. Was it school? I'm not remembering many things lately. My mind is so scattered that I can't remember anything.

I don't care if a story is cliche or not. The story could be traditional, or untraditional, maybe somewhere in between. If the artwork and plots are interesting to me, I'll enjoy the story. But that's just how I am.

Honestly? My mental health, the depression, is coming and going for some time. But I've been depressed lately because one of my favorite musicians died, he died on April 15th, he was a musician whose band I grew up with. So there is a part of me who is still after many weeks.

And if that was not already depression enough, there's also two other bands I listen kinda disbanded. Bands disbanded, musicians died just within barely five months; while in those five months, there's so many bands and musicians I listen to that have releasing lots of new music.

So my mental health is up and down these last few months.

Oh! I don't watch the show Queen Of Tears. But I have seen clips from one episode.. Song Joongki came back as Vincenzo in a n episode, as a cameo character. So it's interesting to me. Vincenzo season two?!

I have many new seasons of shows to look forward to.. And not a new show, but I've just been rewatching Black Sails since they added it on Netflix. Watch it! There's positive queer representation in the series.

Besides that. Now that Song Kang went to the military, I've was really bing watching a lot of his shows too. The final season of Sweet Home will be released in the summer. Many new seasons releases this year.

Have you watched Parasyte? The Korean show based off the manga. I think the show was okay. The show was different than what I thought was gonna happen though, somewhat similar concept to the original.

Castlevania (Just finished watching it and it’s amazing! I was throughly impressed with the story and all the characters. Trevor, Alucard, and Sypha were just so refreshing and fun to watch. They all have great chemistry and bounce off each other well. Loved seeing all the vampire diversity too.)

Castlevania Nocturne (OMG!! What a way to start a first season! Gosh I can’t wait for the second season! We got even more diversity and dope magic fights. Still great chemistry between the characters. Also, how dare they end season one like that! I need season 2 as soon as possible! Ahhh!!!)

Transformers (AUTOBOTS ROLL OUT!! I have had *major* transformers brain for the past month now. I finished reading through mtmte and lost light and cried my eyes out😭 I’ve rewatched my beloved show transformers prime and got to watch shows I hadn’t watched yet such as rescue bots, transformers animated, and I even managed to watch some of the cyberverse show. I watched season one of robots in disguise too and they did Bumblebee and Optimus so dirty!😭 Anyways, I’m deep in my transformers phase and I don’t plan to leave anytime soon🩵)

Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi (I adore the anime and have already started to collect the manga! Such a fun mesh of cozy cooking meets dnd but it has a mystery going on in the main plot. It’s well done and the character designs and food look fantastic! Makes me want to eat good food and draw every time I watch a new episode. Absolutely adore this story and its characters💕)

Detentionaire (I forgot about this show until I saw it on Amazon prime recently. Man I used to love this show! This was my mystery conspiracy show before gravity falls and it was fantastic! I wish they got a fith season to wrap up some loose ends but man it was a fun ride down the nostalgia rabbit hole! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a show similar to gravity falls.)

Honestly I’m just gonna put a basic understanding of Dungeon Meshi below the cut for anyone not interested in watching it but what’s to read this (do not read if you are planning to watch, this will have spoilers)

Dungeon Meshi is kind of like D&D in the sense that they’re going through a multi layer dungeon the whole time. There’s all the typical fantasy races like dwarves, elves, half-foot, all that stuff. They call humans Tall-Mans also.

Below is a list of the characters you need to know, their races, their abilities, and a fun fact.

Laois — Tall-man, can use sword, and is INCREDIBLY autistic coded.

Marcille — elf (half-elf?), user of black magic (plus fire), also very lesbian.

Falin — Tall-man, user of not black magic, Marcille’s lesbian girlfriend and Laios’s sister.

Senshi — dwarf, he makes food (he can fight the food), has been living in the dungeon since before it was officially discovered.

Izutsumi — beast-man (cat girl), nimble and quick with sharp claws, hates everyone

Chilichuck — Half-foot, is tiny so can easily check for traps, has reassured the party many times that despite his height of 3’7 he is 29.

Thistle — elf, user of all magics (including black) (mostly black), most likely has a really good bromance with Delgal

Delgal — Tall-man, leadership skills I guess, former king of the golden country who’s been dead for I don’t know how many years (thistle is in denial) (also he’s just insane)

Lore you need to know:

Falin was eaten by a red dragon before the story begins. The reason they (Laois, Marcille, Chilchuck) went back into the dungeon was so that they could resurrect her and get her back. They had to go as soon as possible because they could only resurrect her before she got digested, and because of this, didn’t have enough food or supplies for the journey.

That’s when they met Senshi, who started cooking monsters for them and letting them feed off the dungeon, forgoing any cost or debts that they might have had to have.

When they get to the red dragon, they realize that Falin has already been digested because of the dragons strange activity and constant motion. This causes Marcille to reveal her secret, that she uses black magic, which is highly forbidden for what it can do.

The group assembles the only thing left of Falin, her bones, and Marcille does a black magic ritual that brings her back to life. The problem with this is that the ritual Marcille used intertwined Falin and the red dragons souls, making it so she still had some of the red dragon instinct in her. And some of that instinct was to follow Thistle.

Thistle has been looking for his childhood friend, king Delgal, for hundreds of years now. He had sent the red dragon to go out and find him. And Falin now has to answer that order. Thistle transforms Falin into a beast of feathers and scales and sends her off, once again, to find Delgal.

With Falin gone again and the groups moral low, they start to trudge back upwards until they run into an old friend, and eventually, a new one. This old friend, Shuro, has an attendant named Izutsumi, who thinks that maybe Laois’s party can help cure her curse.

Izutsumi has been cursed into being a beast man, meaning she’s part cat. She used to be a human, and she longs to be normal again instead of some house pet, but the curse binding her is tight, and they can’t get it off. She stays with them anyway because she thinks Thistle, (the mad mage, as most people call him) might be able to break her curse. Also, she’s starting to like them.

They meet a couple people, get a couple clues, and keep going to try and defeat Thistle and get Falin back. All with a delicious meal every day! (Thank you Senshi) (we love you Senshi)

Thats all that’s on Netflix and I haven’t read the manga so we’re starting right there and I hope I don’t commit a crime against canon.
