three little words
summary: soulmates aren't always instant love stories in the world. in fact, you never know when you've found them until they admit their feelings to you. this- this is one of those times. funny how it takes the weirdest things to make people admit feelings. fandom: elvis ( 2022 ) rating: t pairing: steve binder x female reader word count: 1742 warnings: pining. soulmates being dumb. jealousy. elvis being elvis. brief mention of cheating ( elvis related ). pushy mothers. mentions of how steve tried to get in touch with elvis post special only to not get through. author's note: so @blurredcolour was like please feed me a crumb of steve binder and since really i had no plans on doing an austin or an elvis piece for valentines i figured what's the harm in doing a steve one and a jerry one. if i do a late piece for either austin or elvis don't question it. post sick/healing brain is a fun idea magnet. this not my favorite piece but my brain went to a place, i followed it, this was that result
Tumblr media
Steve has always found Valentines to be a bit silly. Maybe it's because he thinks if you care about someone you should show it to them all the time. Or maybe it's because he figures that it's just a way for men to make for stupid things they've done. Elvis is a prime example of that- the sort of man who gets his wife jewelry boxes for Valentine's with platitudes that ring hollow when you know what the man has a tendency to do. A shame really, because he does have a shockingly impeccable taste when it comes to certain items. All that woman wants is to enjoy her soulmate- but that's never been his sort of style, has it?
You on the other hand, oh you enjoyed the damn holiday even without someone to celebrate it with. You’ve enjoyed it from the very moment you discovered a startling amount of people find out who their soulmates are on the day. Something about love being in the air finally making it so people reveal their feelings. It’s not- Steve supposes it’s romantic in its own way, he does. It’s not his cup of tea but seeing you almost prance around the studio makes it a little better.
Honestly, having you around the studio makes the whole holiday a little better. It makes him feel a little better when he realizes that once again Elvis has ignored his phone call and that the relationship their thought they had cultivated while working on his special meant something to the other man. If he was a joking man who lived and breathed soulmates like you do he'd have called him a platonic one. After all, you literally had called him that to his face despite Steve's embarrassment and the rancorous laughter of Elvis's Memphis Mafia and Bones'.
"Guess 'm gonna let you n' him be my Hollywood Mafia. Make sure I always got a place here." Elvis had joked at the time. Of course that would have meant staying in touch once he moved on to the hotter pastures of Las Vegas. That would have required you and Steve being able to see his show.
You can tell Steve is dwelling on it, hearing about how Elvis has a special show planned somewhere in the US or in Vegas, you aren't really paying attention to the particulars. You're just paying attention to how a man you love is zoning out in the most polite way he can to someone talking about it. You really ought to rescue him from his plight and that's just what you do in a flurry of a red dress that stops at your knees with black heels and generally looking like you'd be alright for a night on the town tonight and for work today.
"Steve, they need you for something in the control room, come on." You say, grabbing his hand to pull him away from the girl with a smile. "I'll bring him back eventually but in the meantime you might might want to get back to work.
Maybe the way you had rescued him was because you were a little jealous but- who could really blame you. Here was a man you're pretty sure was your one. Your romantic soulmate to end all soulmates and he refused to do the one thing that could confirm it. Never mind that he acted like your significant other nine times out of ten and that your mother wondered when he'd make a move and confirm your suspicions after all she wasn't getting any younger was she? So if seeing another girl talk to him when he clearly wasn't interested made your blood boil a little bit, well, you were just doing what a good soulmate would do. Or at the very least what a good friend would do.
When you're out of earshot of the girl, he allows himself the simple pleasure of pulling you a little closer so that he can murmur a thank you in your ear before pulling away just a smidge. "I was thinking I was going to get stuck there."
A moment passes before you laugh quietly. "You would have. Probably until you agreed to go with her EP's show."
The laugh that leaves his mouth is a little bitter. "Jokes on her I can't even get you and me in there. Unless she's got connections we don't-"
"Sold out means sold out." You finish squeezing his hand as you pull him into an empty dressing room. "You tried to call him again?"
He nods, frowning as he flops down on the couch, briefly forgetting your joined hands and pulling you down next to him. "Couldn't get through- wanted to surprise-" He trails off shaking his head. "Doesn't matter. Should just buy tickets like a normal person stop acting like-"
"He's our friend? That we're his little Hollywood Mafia?" You scoff, allowing yourself to curl into him as he makes room for you almost naturally. "Please at this point I'm about to march down there myself and shove my heels up his-"
"Y/N!" Steve laughs, trying to swat at your arm only to have you barely avoid him. "Don't shove your heel up his ass. It's- That's a waste of your pretty heels."
There it is- one of those moments you feel like maybe it's there, maybe there really is that little soulmate spark that you'll just have to add some kindling to to turn it into a roaring fire. At the very least it's one of those moments that make you think he wants to make a move on you and take a plunge where you two are more than just friends and colleagues. Later on you'll like to blame it on the air or blame it on the lingering jealousy or maybe just blame it on everything else, but you can't resist the urge to just move a leg so that one of your heels are in his lap. You hear his sharp intake of breath and smile a little.
"You like my heels?" You ask innocent as can be and prompting him to look at you with narrowed eyes.
"I always do." It's a simple answer but it has your breath catching in your throat for some reason. His keeps staring at you almost as if he's trying to solve a riddle before he sighs, shaking his head. "You always look nice in them. I've always wanted to see your entire collection laid out but-I'm not- We work together."
Your brain catches up very quickly to what he's saying and you swear your heart beats just a little faster as you lick your lips, your eyes drifting down to his own and laughing softly. "So do actors and actresses and other people- Are you trying to-"
"Admit that I like you on Valentines? Admit that I am a cliche I kind of hate? Admit that I had really been hoping to get into that show so I could tell you backstage and have E just laugh at both of us and throw some stupid party?" The words come out in almost a rush while at the same time sounding almost like he had rehearsed this in his head a million times. "Yeah. I am. I'm trying to admit that I've loved you ever since I first saw you but figured you might have been a little too much to handle at the time but now-"
You cut him off by practically forcing him down against the couch and placing a kiss to his lips. It's not that you don't want to hear it, it's not that you don't want to hear the love declaration but you also want to confirm that the fire you feel burning inside you and the strum of your body that has erupted from the moment he said I've loved you means that you have been right. Steve's been your soulmate this entire time and you've both been doing some stupid pining and for what reason. When you pull away he's got a stupid little grin on his face and you know your chest is heaving just a hair. "I love you too. And I don't know if you've noticed- this is far more romantic than the other way you could have done it."
"Yeah?" He asks, fiddling with his ascot just a little. "That's why we both feel it?"
The love, the connection the everything is what he means. You nod slowly, your hand moving up to grab the hand he has fiddling with his ascot.
"Yeah. You really are- We really are-"
"Soulmates." He finishes for you, moving both his hands to cup your face and pull you in for a gentle kiss. "Found out on Valentines like everyone else." He pauses and tilts his head a little. "Not that I don't want to kiss you more but how does dinner sound tonight. Celebrating everything. It's no dinner and a show but-"
"It's perfect." You respond, kissing him again and nuzzling at his nose. "It's dinner and my soulmate who I don't have to fight a million women for, I'm not going to complain. Besides we should get back to work. They really did actually need you in the control room I just-"
"Wanted to be selfish?" He laughs as you both move to stand up.
You swat at his arm before pulling him in for another kiss- God you're going to enjoy that until your dying breath. "Wanted to make you feel better but I see how you see me. See if I try and do anything nice for you again."
"It's your job as my soulmate. Love you." He whispers in your ear before pulling away, leaving the room first so things don't look too suspicious.
He was right about it being your job, which is why you might have spent the rest of the day trying to get through to Elvis through a series of phone games that had you almost tearing out your hair. You got what you wanted though, tickets for a show and backstage access that you ran by multiple people including Jerry and Joe who if no one else wanted you there could likely get the pair of you in.
It wasn't a Valentine's show but hey- it was something. It was something to make him happy. After all, hadn't he made you happy with those three little words.

More Than Meets The Eye - Steve Rogers x reader
Tumblr media
a/n - hey lovely people!! this one is for @s1utforfictionalcharacters, who asked for a Steve x reader enemies to lovers a while ago. thank you so much for bearing with me and being patient, and i hope you enjoy!!<3
Summary: Between figuring out what was the Tesseract doing at a Hydra base and if it even is the Tesseract, you need to navigate your relationaship with one annoying, broody Captain. Honestly, you might prefer the Hydra thing.
this isn’t set in the mcu timeline, but takes inspiration from a few mcu movies. it’s not canon compliant and everyone’s alive:)
Word Count: 7k
Warnings: lowkey angst and some tension, maybe a curse word or two? tell me if i missed anything!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Rogers!" you heard Tony's voice over the comms, "Where the hell are you?"
"Babysitting," you heard Steve's irritated voice, not only over the comms but also behind you, right before you saw him dashing past you to punch the Hydra agent you were fighting square in the jaw.
"Well, get America's ass over here, now," Tony grunted, clearly mid-fight himself, "we need backup."
"Go!" you yelled at him, spinning to take out another agent that was coming up behind Steve, "I got this!"
"You sure?" he asked, his tone sarcastically degrading, jumping while kicking two agents simultaneously. Showoff.
"Yes," you resisted the urge to roll your eyes, "I can handle them, go help the others!"
"Alright," he grunted as he pushed off another agent before running back in the direction he came from, towards the rest of the team.
"Cap, you coming or what?" Natasha spoke on the comms, calmer than Tony, but it was obvious she's just as in need of backup as he was.
"Coming!" Steve replied, before it went relatively quiet.
You finished up disarming the rest of the agents in your wing of the building. No one was calling for you on the comms yet, so you decided to make another round in the perimeter, make sure you didn't miss anything.
God knows captain know-it-all is gonna be on your ass about it if that's the case. And honestly, you have more than enough of that as is.
As you were walking down the hallway, you noticed a strange, glowing light coming from under the doors. Upon finding it was unlocked, you opened it to reveal a room that was entirely filled with the same blueish light you had seen, and it was all coming from a desk in the middle of it.
Approaching slowly and letting your eyes time to adjust, you got closer and closer, realizing the shiny object was a peculiar blue cube. A cube you knew well, perhaps even too well.
"Guys, if you're done over there, you might wanna come to my wing. There's something you're gonna want to see."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Okay, we have to keep looking, maybe they left some blueprints or anything that can indicate how they were planning on using it," Steve commanded, "or already have."
"Wait," you said before everyone split up to follow his orders, "as important as the why they got it is, I think the first question we should be asking is how the hell they got it. I thought it was locked away in the Asgard safe?" you looked at Bruce, who out of all of you had the most contact with Thor.
"It was, the last time I checked," he frowned. "I'll see if I can contact Thor, see if he knows anything."
"You do that," Tony interjected, "the rest of you, follow Cap's order while he and I have a little chat. Shall we Rogers?" he pulled a frowning Steve aside, while you all split up to try and find any information you could salvage.
In your search, you ran into Natasha. As you were both scouring the same desk for clues, working together like a well-oiled machine, you asked, "what did Tony want from Cap?"
"Probably to ask him where the hell was he when we needed his backup," she said matter-of-factly. "Or, you know, where the heck he was. We all know Steve's proper like that," she smiled, and you let out a chuckle at her words.
"Well, that’s good," you remarked, "since he really should've been there for you guys. I don't know what was that all about," you scrunched up your nose. "Nothing here," you added, closing the drawer you were looking through.
"Yeah, here too," Natasha closed her own drawer, "let's go."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that day, you were all having dinner together as you went over some papers the others found at the Hydra base. Since you were already in the same place, you split the takeout, taking caution not to spill any of it.
"Cap," you asked, seeing the saltshaker was too far for you to reach, "Can you pass me th-" your words were abruptly cut by him planting it in your hand, going back to whatever it is he was reading.
"Thanks," you muttered, going back to your paperwork as well.
This might be the place to mention that pretty much ever since you joined the team, Steve exhibited a certain… coldness to you. Arrogance, indifference, call it what you want – from day one, Steve Rogers made sure you knew he was better than you.
And considering he was literally Captain America, it's not like you thought you were ever better than him in the first place.
You blended in with the rest of the team seamlessly, fighting and training among them. I mean sure, there were jokes about you being "the new kid", but it was just that – jokes. No one, or at least no one but Steve, seemed to view you as inferior.
You still fought well together, it was your job. Hell, he just passed you the salt before you even finished asking for it. Being attuned to each other's actions and attitude in that way made it all the more obvious how much he seemed to covet his leadership position, his place of dominance.
It got on your nerves. So. Much.
You see, if he were like that to everyone else on the team, so be it. But the absolute majority of it was directed towards you – the new girl. And it was clear that's all he ever saw you as. A girl.
Even that salt thing – he handed it over so impatiently, so suddenly, like one would handle an irritating child.
You had hoped he'd get over it at some point, but so far, that didn't seem to be the case. Well, you're not planning on going anywhere, so you'll both have to get over yourselves at some point.
"Hey!" Steve snapped his fingers in front of your eyes, shaking you from your reverie. "C'mon, listen up. Tony found something."
Oh well, that "some point" is probably not today.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So, Hydra wanted to use this," Natasha gestured at the Tesseract, "To power up a weapon they've designed?"
"That's the gist of it," Tony confirmed. "But from the looks of it, this thing is a lot more powerful than it seems. They planned on powering up a whole armored aircraft, plus all of their rifles using this cube. If that's possible, and by the looks of it, it very well might be, it's a lot stronger than you'd think."
"Wait, what do you mean their rifles as well?" you asked, your brows furrowing, "like, split this thing into pieces?"
"No, it looks like they were planning to project its power somehow, like…" Tony trailed off, struggling to explain.
"Like… Bluetooth?" you suggested.
"Yeah," tony snickered, "pretty much."
"Okay, but they didn't do that yet, right? We stopped them?" you looked around to the rest of your teammates before looking back at Tony.
"Seems like we did," Steve answered instead. "Bruce, any update on how they managed to get it?"
"Didn't hear anything back yet," the man in question shook his head, "I'll try again."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Bruce ended up getting an answer from Thor, telling him to come to Asgard, you immediately volunteered to go with him. It was partially because you've never actually been there, and you were very curious as to why Thor would ask Bruce to come.
But also, you could use a break from a certain Captain.
You tried to ask Bucky and Sam what his deal with you was, several times, but they just shrugged and gave you vague, unhelpful answers. You even considered trying to convince Wanda to just tell you what he thinks about you, but you didn't want to give him the satisfaction of bothering you so much that you'd stoop that low.
So lately, you've been just trying to avoid him, which usually worked just fine, since it's not like he was that adamant about being around you either. That is, until you said you'd go with Bruce.
"No way," he immediately objected.
"Why?" you asked, "Bruce might need some backup, and I'd like to visit Asgard. Win-win."
"We need you here, going over the papers."
"C'mon Cap, I think we both know I do better out there in the field than I do with all the blueprints. Tony's way better with that, he's the only one who does it anyway."
"So what, you're just gonna go on a field trip?" he sneered.
"No, I'm going to look out for my friend and teammate." It took everything in you to keep your voice level.
"That's nice. Cause it would be a shame if Banner had to watch your back while you went on vacation."
You scoffed. "Where did you even get that idea? I said I was gonna give Banner backup. That's the first thing I said, cause that's the most important thing. End of story."
"Fine." Steve shrugged.
"Fine?"
"Yeah, if Banner's willing to take you with him, go."
"Good," you nodded.
"Great."
Somewhat awkwardly, you shuffled out of the room to tell Bruce to count you in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Natasha was the one to send both you and Bruce off to Asgard, the rest being otherwise occupied.
"Be safe," she told the both of you, holding each of your shoulders with one of her hands, before stepping away.
"We will," Bruce promised and you nodded, and just in time the Bifrost came down, taking the both of you where you needed to get.
Thor was the one to greet you, taking you both in for a warm hug before his face became serious.
"I didn't call you all the way here for nothing," he said, "come with me to the palace."
As you were on your way, he explained. "When you told me you encountered the Tesseract in Midgard, I immediately checked in our vault. Sure enough, there's still a Tesseract there."
"A Tesseract? I thought there was just the one," you frowned.
"We did too," Thor replied, "which is why I wanted you both to come see it for yourselves. Maybe you'd be able to point out some differences."
Getting to the palace, you wasted no time going down to the vault. And there it was – the Tesseract.
"How…" you trailed off. It looked completely identical to the one you had found on earth, the same blue tinted glint lighting up its surroundings.
"That's what I was hoping you might have an answer for," Thor sighed, his brows furrowing. "You said the one you encountered was previously in the possession of a group called… Chimera?"
"Hydra," Bruce corrected him. "And yes, we found it in one of their bases."
"Is it possible that the one we found was a fake?" you asked, lifting your eyes from the Tesseract. "Or maybe this one is the fake? Is there a way to know?"
"The only way to know is to try and use them," Bruce sighed, "but trying to wield the power of an infinity stone can be dangerous and destructive to the one who tries. It's something we should try and avoid."
"Okay," you thought, "can't we try and take this one to earth? See if maybe Tony could run some tests on them both, find us a lead as to which one's the real one?"
"That sounds like a good idea," Bruce agreed, "or at least the best one we've got. Can we take it?"
"Of course. I trust you to guard it," he looked at Bruce fondly.
"Thank you," Bruce's eyes and smile are sincere as he shakes Thor's hand.
You pick up the Tesseract tentatively, putting it in your bag and looking back up at Bruce, whose handshake with Thor was still lingering. You hated to interrupt, but you two needed to go back to earth to fill your friends in if you wanted to solve this mystery.
"Shall we?" you asked, somewhat softly.
"Yeah," Bruce shook his head slightly, "Let's go."
You trailed behind Bruce and Thor as you made your way back to the Bifrost, thinking it over.
If the Tesseract you found on earth was the fake, then why would Hydra have a fake? And if the one that was currently in your bag was the fake, then why would they just leave the real one lying around while the Avengers stormed their base? And at any case, how did they manage to make such an accurate replica?
"Thank you, Thor," you said sincerely once you reached the end of the Bifrost. "We're going to figure this out."
"I know you will," he said, and touched your shoulder affectionately.
You said your goodbyes, and then, you and Bruce started to make the journey home, until suddenly you felt a force push you out of the Bifrost, and before you knew it you landed on dirt, rolling a few times, Bruce landing a few feet away from you.
Hurriedly getting up, you helped Bruce to his feet as well, before the two of you looked around to find yourself in the middle of what seemed to be a desert, but it was like nothing you've seen before.
The sand was orange, red, much darker than it was in deserts you've been to. You and Bruce landed in some sort of valley, surrounded by large dunes of the dark sand, creating a perfect circle around you.
"Have any idea where we are?" you asked, trying to keep your cool, "Or how we got here?"
"I-"
His words were cut off by the sound of a gun cocking behind you. Instinctively, you crouched down and spun around, sending your leg out, taking the man down with a kick to his ankles.
But it wasn't enough. Before you could fully get back up, you and Bruce were already surrounded by agents, and the fight quickly escalated into a hand-to-hand one, having to take on multiple agents at a time. At some point, Bruce hulked out, but even then, you were still fighting them all simultaneously.
You barely managed to take in the glint of a knife from the corner of your eye before the felt the sharp sting of it on your ribs, your hand automatically going to hold the wound. The man started running in the other direction, which was when you realized you weren't the objective of this attack.
Your bag was.
"Bruce!" you yelled, trying to get his attention, as you started trying to run after the agent.
But before Bruce could even notice you, a deep rumble sounded through the air, the prominent crackling of thunder. You turned around just in time to see Thor coming down from the sky, Mjolnir clad tightly in his fist, sending bolts of lightning at your enemies.
You turned back and tried to keep running, but you couldn't do it fast enough, the wound in your ribcage still bleeding, and soon, the agent disappeared from sight.
You were panting when the battle died down, a mere few minutes after Thor's arrival. You didn't turn around, even as you sensed Bruce and Thor approaching you from behind.
"I lost it," you said, still unable to meet their eyes.
"They took it," Bruce said gently. "Now, let me take a look at that wound."
Well, you thought, that's not how Steve's going to see it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You lost it?" Steve asked, his disbelief clear. His eyes were trained on you, a frown on his face.
"She got hurt trying to protect it, Steve," Bruce answered before you could. "We'll get it back."
Steve's eyes didn't waver from yours, even as Bruce spoke.
"I'm sorry," you said, your voice coming out smaller than you wanted to. You cleared your throat, continuing stronger, "I did everything I could."
"I told you, you shouldn't have gone out there," he sighed, frustrated.
"Really, Cap?" you asked, "is this the time for 'I told you so's? for a hundred-year-old that's really fucking childish," you said through your teeth.
"Watch it," he snapped, "next time, maybe if you listen to me you won't get hurt."
"If I'm that bad of a soldier, Captain," you spat out, "am I not dispensable to you? Why do you even care if I get hurt? I bet it would've been just the same to you if I died but you still had the Tesseract."
Your words rendered him speechless, and you turned to walk towards the med bay. Bruce offered you his arm, but the look you sent him made it very obvious you weren't interested in company.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The wound healed well. You and Steve were… civil, to say the best.
You'd admit your words that day you were back from Asgard were harsh. You'd even admit that to his face, if he'd change his attitude towards you. Which he didn't, so really, maybe he deserved to hear them.
Anyways, a few days after the Asgard thing, the wound was fine, and you had an idea.
"Hey," you asked Tony, who happened to be next to you at the moment, "what if we go ask Strange?"
"What?" he looked up from the robot he was currently tinkering with.
"What if we went to Strange to ask him about the Tesseract?" you repeated, "he'd probably know more than us about this stuff."
Tony wasted no time in calling a team meeting, in which you told the others your idea about reaching out to Strange.
"That's a really good idea," Steve said.
Taken aback, you opened your mouth to speak, but before you could, he continued, "I'm coming with you."
Yep, it was way too good to be true.
"Why?" you asked, frowning. "I thought Tony would come, since he's already had a run-in with him before."
"Yes, but I think we can agree he's not the most diplomatic person out there," Steve smirked.
"I'm right here," Tony remarked dryly.
Steve paid him no mind and continued, "And besides, he's pretty much the only one except Bruce that knows enough to figure out Hydra's blueprints, and we still need all hands on deck in that front.  So, I'm coming with you," he finished in a tone that left no room for argument.
You considered objecting anyways, but knew whatever you'd say would sound childish and tactless, so you simply nodded at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since the Sanctum Dr. Strange usually resided in was in New York, there was no need for Steve and you to take the Quinjet, but you did take a car from Tony's collection, which Steve drove. The car ride was filled with quite the uncomfortable silence, but at least it was better than arguing, right?
Small victories.
When Steve parked the car about a block away from the Sanctum, you both got out swiftly, blending right in with your civilian clothes, and making your way to the doorstep.
There, Steve knocked on the door hesitantly. You both listened, but there was no answer. You held onto the handle and managed to open the unlocked door easily. You exchanged a look with Steve, both of you on high alert, and entered through the door, Steve closing it behind you.
You both silently stood in the threshold, contemplating your next move. Eventually, you took a tentative step forward, and just then a red object whipped right in front of your eyes, making you stumble backwards, right into Steve. You quickly turned around to apologize, but before you noticed it the red fabric was wrapped tightly around your arms, holding them tight against your torso. Steve was in a similar predicament, and since the cape wasn’t that long, you two were left tied face to face and extremely close to each other.
You tried to wiggle out of the fabric's hold, but it was almost like it tightened with your every move, adjusting itself accordingly. You struggled against it, trying to move even the slightest bit, but it wouldn't budge. You sighed, looking up at Steve.
Oh my god, he was way closer than you'd realized. His wide frame towering over you, you swallowed dryly before you whispered, "What now?"
Before he could answer, the sound of footsteps carried through the halls, and soon enough, Dr. Stephen Strange was descending down the stairs of the New York Sanctum to greet you.
"Hello," he said, his face indifferent, "I wasn't expecting you."
"Well, we weren't expected to get so… tied up, so that makes three of us," Steve remarked, prompting you to chuckle.
"Hello, Dr. Strange," you introduced yourself to him, "the Captain and I were wondering if you could help us with some… Tesseract trouble."
"Sounds awful," he smirked slightly. "Follow me," he started going up the stairs again and you exchanged a look with Steve. "Oh right," he gestured with his hand, and the red fabric detangled itself from the two of you, and turned out to be a cloak as it wrapped around Strange's shoulders. "I almost forgot," the man chuckled, "Now come on."
You and Steve exchanged another look as you rubbed your arm where the cloak dug into it a little, before following Strange up the stairs and into the library, where he offered you two chairs to sit in before sitting down in front of you. In the air. He was sitting down while floating.
Still less weird than the cloak, in your opinion.
"So," he started, "what, uh, Tesseract trouble are you having, exactly?"
Steve and you took turns explaining the situation to him, from finding a Tesseract in a Hydra base to losing the one that was previously in Asgard. Steve, to your relief and wonder, said nothing about it being your fault, but just said it wasn't in your possession anymore.
"So," you summed up, "we were wondering if you knew how anyone could manage to replicate the Tesseract this well, and how can we tell which one's the fake one. Without using them, of course."
"Well, those are great questions. I don't know of another way to determine if an infinity stone is indeed real besides taking the risk and trying to use it, so I can't help you with that. But as for the fake, I believe opening the Tesseracts will provide a good enough answer. You see, the Tesseract isn't that hard to fake. Might be a little expensive, sure, but some lights and plastic and you're set, and from what I understand Hydra isn't exactly struggling financially. But," he sighed, "you can’t fake an infinity stone. For most people, once you'll come in direct contact with it, you'll feel its power, and also its destructive properties."
"So the only way to know if an infinity stone is real is to risk touching it?" Steve asked.
"As far as I know of, yes," Strange nodded.
"Thank you," you said, "for your help. We sure get back to the compound, but we'll let you know if there are any big developments."
When Steve and you got back to the compound, everyone was already waiting for you, and you told them what Strange told you. Together, you all went to open the tesseract you had found in the Hydra base.
"Be careful not to touch what's inside," you warned, and Tony put of his Iron Man arm before breaking the side of the glowing cube, opening it to find…
A bunch of wires and lightbulbs. They didn't even try to make it look like an infinity stone.
"Well, the one in Asgard could've also been a fake," Natasha shrugged. "This doesn't really tell us anything. C'mon guys, we'll continue the search tomorrow," she touched your shoulder comfortingly before slipping away.
You were about to do the same when you saw Steve fidgeting with his sleeve, around where the cloak was wrapped around him. You walked up to him.
"You okay?" you asked, expecting him to brush you off.
"Yeah, I just think this cape held on a little too strong," he chuckled, removing his hand to reveal a stain on the fabric of his right suit sleeve, on you knew all too well was blood.
"Oh my god," you frowned. "C'mon, I'll help you clean it up," you gestured towards the med bay.
The walk there was brief and silent, and when you got there, you told Steve to sit down before ripping his sleeve enough to see the shallow wound.
"You don't have to do this," Steve said, as you looked for some gauze pad and wet it with water.
"I know," you said, "but since I'm the reason we needed to go there in the first place, I am doing this."
"You know it's not your fault, right? You couldn’t have known he'd have a magical cape that ties up people."
"That's not what I was talking about," you mumbled, before cleaning the wound gently.
Steve sighed. "I guess I do owe you an apology for the Asgard thing. I acted like a jerk. I'm sorry."
"No, you were right," you chuckled bitterly, "it's my fault we lost what might've been the real space stone to Hydra. You were just the only one willing to admit that."
"Well, I hope you know what you said about me then wasn't true. I care. You know, if you get hurt. And I wouldn't want anyone to die so I can have anything."
"I know," you said dryly, "you're too perfect for that."
You finished cleaning the wound and started bandaging it.
"That's not- god, I really do have a way with words, don't I? you probably hate me by now."
"I don't hate you, Steve," you looked up from his arm to his eyes, and he smiled at you. "Relax, it doesn't mean I like you all that much either," you smirked, prompting him to laugh.
"Yeah, that's fair, I guess. Thank you," he gestured to his now bandaged arm.
"Sure," you sent a small smile his way before walking away.
Maybe Steve Rogers wasn't that bad after all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, scratch that, Steve Rogers was the worst.
The conversation actually started out civil. Nice, even.
"Hey, Cap," you started, "do you know if Bruce found anything on the wiring in the fake Tesseract yet?"
"Nope," he turned to face you.
"Oh. Well, thanks," you smiled, "I'll just…" you gestured at the exit, but he stopped you.
"Wait. Actually, I wanted to talk to you. Can you…" he gestured at the empty chair in front of him, and you sat down.
"About the whole Tesseract thing," he started, "I think you should consider sitting this one out."
"What?" you frowned.
"I just…" he sighed, "I think it might be better if you sat this one out."
"Steve, I found the Tesseract in the first place," you said, getting angrier by the second, "I'm not backing down from this."
"You found the fake Tesseract," he corrected, "and lost what might have been the real one."
"I thought you said it wasn't on me."
"It's not, but still."
"I don't get it, a few days ago you were telling me it wasn't my fault and now you're benching me because of it?"
"I just… you're clearly very invested in this-"
"Which is why I deserve to stay on this mission," you cut him off, fighting to keep your voice level.
"Which is why I think you should sit it out," he ignored you, "because you don't need to get yourself hurt for this."
"I'm an Avenger just like you," you snapped, "you might get hurt as well. So might everyone else. I don't get why I'm any different."
"I told you, because you're too emotionally invested," he insisted, his tone rising.
"Oh, you're benching me cause I'm 'emotional'? really? That's your excuse?"
"That's not an excuse, I-"
"No, tell me, Steve, what's your problem with me? Just spit it out, clearly you have one. What have I done to you to make you hate me?" you were yelling now, exasperated at his flawed logic.
"I don't hate you."
"That's all you have to say?" you scoffed. "You know what? If you're letting whatever your problem is with me to get in the way of the mission, maybe you're the emotional one."
The charged atmosphere was interrupted by Natasha's frame showing up in the doorway.
"Hey guys," she started, before looking between the two of you. "Is this a bad time?" she waited a second before shrugging, "Doesn't matter. There are sightings of suspicious activity midtown, we think it can be Hydra. We gotta move, be down in five," she stated, before walking down the hallway, leaving Steve and you alone once more.
"I-" he started.
"Let's go," you said at the same time, before simply turning away to go and suit up. You had a battle to win, no matter what he thought.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So," Tony started once you were all on the Quinjet, "Here's what we know – Hydra is probably in the possession of the real Tesseract, since we just got word of people seeing a big aircraft over midtown. My guess, they wanted to test the new weapons out before using them on a larger scale," he said, "which is why it would be the best thing to stop them now."
You split up into groups, Tony, Wanda and Sam going after the aircraft, Bucky and Steve go one way on the ground, you and Natasha the other. Thanking every god you knew you weren't paired up with Steve, you and Natasha ran and turned into a large square, starting to point people away from the steady stream of Hydra agents that was coming your way.
You and Natasha were both fighting off the agents together, most of the civilians already cleared from the area, when suddenly, they just… stopped, all in unison.
"Avengers," a voice with a heavy accent boomed through the air, presumably from the aircraft, magnified by speakers, "I know what you're here for," the voice chuckled. "Come and get it."
All at once, the Hydra agents in front of you pulled out something from their bags, or the pockets of their jackets, and it took you a second to realize what it is – exact replicas of the Tesseract. Dozens of them, maybe even hundreds.
You looked over at Natasha, who was just as exasperated as you were. "We gotta break these things," she said, and you nodded in understanding, charging at the men and women with renewed energy.
Because this was your chance to fix what you broke, to make things right. To show Steve you're better than your mistakes.
That was the mantra that was going in your head, as you smashed Tesseract after Tesseract, even as you found nothing but wires, you kept repeating it – fix what you broke.
Slowly but surely, you and Natasha tackled and defeated more and more agents, moving closer towards where they were coming from – the aircraft, that was lowering more and more, sending out more agents, in a wave that seemed never ending.
Expect when you got closer, you noticed that there was a staircase going down from it. A staircase that at the top of stood a small an in old fashioned army clothes, holding, how not, a small, glowing cube in his hand.
Your vision zeroed in on him. You had a target.
Barely stopping to disarm the other agents, you quickly made your way through the crowd of agents surrounding you, until you were right at the bottom of the staircase. You looked up to see the man still standing on top, smiling at the chaos unraveling at his feet.
You decided to take advantage of the fact he hasn't seen you yet, and climbed the staircase from the bottom side, hanging on to creases and bumps, to keep the advantage. When you got to the top, you tried to swing yourself over the rails. You would've fallen down if a hand wouldn't have reached out, catching your arm and throwing you back on the staircase, right side up.
"Ah, the new kid," the man snickered above you, "I've heard about you. Were you really the one they sent here?"
"No one sent me," you hissed as you got up. "Now hand over the stone and it'll be much more pleasant for you."
"So much spite," he laughed, "but alas, I don't think I will, sweetheart."
"Whatever you say," you delivered a poignant kick to his knee, "sweetheart."
You tried to punch him, but this time he was quicker, avoiding your blow and landing one of his own on your shoulder. You shrugged it off and continued to try and pry the stone from his hands. The struggle was drawing attention, and Natasha yelled at you to watch out just in time before a Hydra agent from down there shot at you, only missing narrowly.
You continued to fight the man, who was stronger than he let on, considering he was fending you off with only one hand, but you also had getting shot to worry about, which was in his favor.
At last, you managed to knock the Tesseract out of his hand, and it fell to the ground in a shattering sound. Out of the broken pieces, there were no wires to be seen, only a stone.
Bingo.
You heard Steve shout something at you from far down, but you weren't paying attention, instead diving for the stone, grasping it in your hand, along with some shards of glass that cut you, but you couldn't care less, because this was it.
Fix what you broke.
You concentrated with all your might of the stone, its power almost physically throbbing in your hand, along with the excruciating pain, but you didn't care.
Fix what you broke.
Your breathing became labored, the pain near insufferable when you finally did it – opened a portal. You didn't know where it led, but the important thing is, it wasn't here. You threw the stone away with all the power you had left in you, praying it would reach so far you'd never see it again.
Fix. What. You. Broke.
Just in time, the portal closed, and you sighed gratefully. The pain was starting to take over now, your mind dancing on the edge of consciousness when you heard voices coming towards you. You wanted to tell them you were fine, but you found yourself falling to the ground, registering the pain of the fall before everything went black.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you woke up, your first thought was that the light's too bright. It felt almost like a hangover, but way worse, and
"I didn't even drink anything," you said, before breaking into a dry cough.
In a second, Steve was there by your side with a glass of water, holding it to your mouth. You took some small sips until you calmed down enough to remember that while no, you didn't drink anything, you did wield the power of an infinity stone, which means it's a miracle you're even alive.
So really, you should be thankful all you ended up with is an awful hangover. Of sorts. A magical hangover.
"Are you okay?" Steve asked, breaking you from your reverie, and making you meet his gaze with yours.
"As much as I can be," you replied, your gaze falling to the blanket that was laid on you. "how long was I out?"
"About 18 hours," he said solemnly, "we didn't… we weren't sure if you'd wake up," he admitted, his voice dropping below a whisper by the end.
"Can't get rid of me that easily," you joked. Despite everything Steve put you through, for some reason you couldn't stand to see him this devastated.
"No, don't-" he sighed, "no one wants to get rid of you. Least of all me. Hell, thinking I'd lost you and it was my fault… hurt more than I could imagine."
"It wouldn't have been your fault, if I, you know," you shrugged, "that was my choice. I had to fix what I broke."
"No, you didn't," he insisted, his eyes snapping up to meet yours once more, "because you didn't break anything. None of this was your fault, and yet you fixed it, alone. You risked wielding the power of an infinity stone to keep earth safe, alone. You shouldn't have been alone."
"It worked out just fine. Besides, what difference would it have made, one more injured person?"
"If I was quick enough… I don't believe the stone could've taken both of us down."
"Us?" you smirked, "I didn't know we were an 'us'. But it's fine, I can deal with that, I guess," you shrugged, and Steve chuckled. You couldn't tell if you were imagining it, but it looked like the slightest of blushes was sprinkled on his cheeks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a part of getting you back to normal, you started training again, moderately at first. But as you regained your strength, your training was almost as intense as it was before. Or maybe, even more intense.
You see, before that, you weren't training with Steve.
Since you didn't really get off to a good start, you'd always train with the others – Nat, Wanda, Sam… other non-super-soldier humans with a very human self-discipline, meaning that you could take breaks and chat in between reps.
Alas, those days were far behind you. I mean, not that far, that's just kind of dramatic, but you get it; you trained with Steve way more often and it was a nightmare.
You didn't know what standards Steve held for his other friends, but if he's like that with everyone then maybe it was better off not being his friend.
"What was that?" Steve asked, his eyes not moving from the timer, which looked comically small in his large hands.
"I said," you repeated between labored breaths and fast push-ups, "if you're like this with all your friends maybe I was better off not being one."
"Who said you are?" he shot back with a smirk, "and… time!"
You collapsed on the training room mattress, letting out a deep breath. "how much was that?"
"98 pushups in one minute," he stated, "not bad."
"Okay, Mr. captain super soldier," you breathed. "You know, maybe I should go back to doing these with Sam. A human being with normal people achievements," you sighed, faux-dreamily.
"I thought you wanted to get better?" Steve chuckled, extending his hand out to help you off the mattress.
"I'll tell him you said that," you smirked and took his hand, letting him help you up. Your touch lingered for the briefest of moments before you let go of his hand.
"Be my guest," Steve shot back, before taking a couple of sparring staffs off the wall, handing you one. An unusual technique in battle, but you found that practicing them with Steve provided a decent challenge to you both, since you were better with it than he was.
With both of you getting into a fighting stance, you started the match by dashing forward, trying to land one on his shoulder, but he quickly spun to the side, accompanied by a move of his staff that, fortunately for you, was a bit poorly aimed, thus only hit you in the arm.
You continued this back and forth for the next few minutes, one graceful move answered by a steady block from the other side, almost like a delicate dance. After a while, you felt yourself getting a little tired, and knew if you didn't end it now, he'd win.
And well, you just can't give him that kind of satisfaction.
You quickly planted your staff on the ground, using the momentum to jump up and wrap your legs around his neck, using your weight to push him down onto the mattress. You'll have to thank Natasha for that move.
His staff fell from his hand as he hit the floor, and you used your advantage to pin his arms above his head, making sure to lean enough of your weight on his torso so he couldn't move. You were both panting from the exertion of the fight, and you could feel a bead of sweat traveling down your back.
He smirked up at you. "Did Nat teach you that one?"
"Maybe," you raised your eyebrow in amusement. "But I executed it to perfection."
"You sure?" he asked, and before you could answer he broke free from your grasp, flipping the both of you so your torso was pinned below him, catching your arms the same way you did to him moments ago.
Breathing heavily, your tongue darted out to wet your lips. "Well, maybe not perfection," you murmured, "but I'd say I did pretty well. You're in nice shape for a hundred-year-old," you slowly grinned up at him.
"Just nice?" he mock pouted, not moving from his position above you.
"Yeah," you smirked, "from what I've seen."
"Well, maybe you've seen nothing yet," he suggested with a quirk of his eyebrow, his head lowering even closer to yours.
"Maybe," you said softly, standing your ground. His eyes were boring into yours, you could hear the shallow sound of his breath, feel it even.
Closing the distance between you was almost more impulse than an actual aware decision. Your lips met his soft ones, his momentum pushing you back against the mattress, your head hitting it with a soft thud you paid no mind to. One of his hands left yours, coming to cup your cheek as his tongue hesitantly entered your mouth, continuing eagerly when you let out a hum of approval, one of your hand sneaking around his neck and tangling in the hair on the nape of his neck, pulling slightly.
When you finally parted, your breaths were once again labored, but for an entirely different reason now.
"Okay, maybe you are in good shape," you rasped, shrugging as well as you could.
He chuckled before his eyes met yours. "You don't hate me," he stated incredulously.
"I already told you I didn't. I take it back, maybe old age is getting to you," you giggled.
He groaned lightly, making your laughter grow stronger.
Okay, so Steve Rogers wasn't the worst. Final verdict.
Loki’s lying in his bed, clutching the book you had loaned him close to his chest.
He finished the book the first night of having it, and he regrets not pacing himself because he still has six days before he can see you again and isn’t sure how to keep himself sane until then. He doesn’t have much to his name anymore, having missed eleven years of his life and his home having been destroyed. So it’s not like he can turn to his favorite books or activities.
The Avengers had reluctantly agreed, mostly out of guilt because of Thor’s previous loss, to let Loki stay in the compound under the condition that he did not leave, did not use his magic unsupervised, and did not cause chaos. It had been an incredibly difficult adjustment, especially on his part, but he was willing to do whatever it took to see you again. So he did not complain even once.
When Loki had returned from timeline 656, the timeline in which he first met you, he was broken but determined. He was on a mission and refused to get distracted until his job was done. He had to find you again. He didn’t know what he was going to do if he didn’t.
So when Mobius agreed to bring Loki to this point of the timeline, he had given Loki the information to be able to find you.
You were his insurance, a way to make sure Loki stayed in his place.
So after two weeks of near perfect behavior and constant sulking from the trickster, Steve and Tony agreed that Loki could leave the compound, though only under Thor’s supervision.
When he first saw you again in that tiny bookstore, he felt like he had been hit in the chest by Thor’s hammer. He thought he was prepared to see you again. Your bright eyes and soft lips were all he could think about the past several months. But apparently, he wasn’t prepared in the slightest.
But you being you, you gave him a sweet smile and kindly helped him find the book you had told him about when the two of you had first met back in timeline 656. Because no matter the timeline, you were always one to help others.
And then you did something he wasn’t expecting. The possibility wasn’t even on his radar. You gave him your own copy to read, telling him it was so he had to come back and see you. He felt his chest constrict in that moment, yet at the same time a spark of hope exploded inside of him. It was something that he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Then when you asked him for his name, his heart broke again.
He had forgotten to even give you his name, because he had already known yours. Your name, your scent, your favorite laugh, your body.
He knew it all.
Yet you knew nothing about him. And after telling you his name, he was afraid you’d remember what he’d done to your city all those years ago. That you’d be afraid of him and reject him, just like most everyone else in his life. He wouldn’t blame you. He believed himself a monster, just like everyone else did.
But he kept himself from spiraling into his dark thoughts with the sole knowledge that the version of you in timeline 656 wasn’t scared of him. Not even before he explained to you what had really happened.
No, you had accepted him, helped him, and eventually loved him.
He could only hope that this version of you could do the same.
***
The day you met Loki, you were a bit shell shocked.
He left almost immediately after telling you his name, and you watched as he met up with a much larger blonde man before walking away. It took your brain one too many seconds to realize the blonde was Thor, making Loki the actual Loki. The Loki that reigned chaos and destruction to your beloved city all those years ago.
A few pieces of information struck you throughout the day, startling you each time:
Number one; you had actually hit on a literal god. The God of Mischief, no less.
Number two; he actually flirted back! What the fuck?
Number three; he never asked for your name.
And number four; you weren’t scared of him. More than that, you weren’t even angry with him.
You couldn’t for the life of you figure out why. Why he didn’t intimidate you. Why you felt as if you understood him. Or why you felt like you knew him, more intimately than just having heard of him. You had only spoken to the man once, for crying out loud.
The week passes by incredibly slowly, and every time you think about your interaction or of seeing Loki again, butterflies come to life in your belly and a smile slowly comes across your face.
But today is finally the day.
It’s a quarter past eleven when the door to the shop opens, the small wind chime signaling someone had entered. You look up from your current read and see Loki taking a few short steps to the counter. He’s dressed to the nines again, wearing a dark grey suit with minimal green accents.
He looks positively delicious, and you curse yourself for letting that thought slip. You slide your bookmark into your novel before setting it on a small shelf behind you.
“Hey! You came back!” You say, your voice a few pitches higher than usual. You really weren’t expecting him to actually return the book himself. In fact, you weren’t sure what you expected at all.
He nods, “Of course, darling. I wanted to see you again,” his voice is deep and his eyes are trained on yours, “And discuss the book, obviously,” He lifts the loved copy in his hand, held between his nimble fingers.
Warmth blooms in your chest and you smile shyly. Your eyes flicker to the window where you saw Thor waiting last week.
“Where’s your chaperone?”
Loki raises a brow, glancing to the window next to him.
“I saw Thor meet you when you left last week.”
Realization dawns on Loki’s face, “Ah, yes. I must be accompanied by my brother at all times outside of the Avengers Compound. It is a term of my arrangement.”
“Arrangement?” You ask, cocking your head slightly.
For a moment, Loki falters. He’s said too much, explaining his situation could cause more questions to arise, and he did not need that right now. Because how in the nine realms would he answer them?
So instead of answering, he sets the book on the counter in between the two of you and smiles, “Nothing for you to concern yourself, dear. I would much rather talk about the blatant misinformation contained in this book.”
His tone is light and playful, so you laugh and pull the book closer to you, “Misinformation? You mean to tell me that you didn’t give birth to a horse?”
Loki rolls his eyes, “Gods, no! I did no such thing. Nor am I the father of Fenrir, Jormungandr, or Hela.” He makes a disgusted face.
“That’s a shame,” You fake pout, “You just ruined my favorite book for me.”
He scoffs, “Darling, I am the living, breathing version of the character in your book. How could a novel be more interesting than the real deal?”
You look at him, a mischievous glint in your eye, and Loki feels his heart jump in his throat. He’s seen that look before. The way your nose crinkles just slightly, causing your eyebrows to scrunch, barely noticeable. There’s a sparkle in your eye, one that tells Loki every time that you’re up to no good.
It was one of the many reasons he fell so hard for you.
“You’re very handsome, I’ll give you that. But I just think Book Loki has more layers. Ya know?”
Normally, if you had made a comment like that, Loki would have pinned you against a wall and put you in your place.
But that was another time. One that Loki desperately hoped would come to him once more.
“Well, I think that if you come to know me better, you shall see I am much more… Complex than you humans have made me out to be.” His voice has lowered a few tones, sweet and smooth like honey.
He’s closer now, leaning over with his forearms on the counter, and you feel a warmth spread across your belly. You curse yourself and discreetly press your thighs together.
But unbeknownst to you, Loki knew every single one of your mannerisms, quirks, and habits. And by default, he saw the little movement you made, and had to use his glamour to hide the way his body reacted.
Conversation flowed from there, banter flying back and forth, your quick wit almost matching his.
It somehow felt normal to you. Comfortable. It was bizarre and pleasant at the same time.
But for Loki, it was just a painful reminder of what he lost so many months ago.
Before he knew it, there was a single knock against the front window, signaling that his time was up. The both of you glanced up to see Thor, dressed in jeans and a casual cotton jacket, peeking inside.
Loki sighs, “While I wish I could stay longer and chat, I fear I must take my leave.” He stands from the chair you had pulled up next to you and straightens his jacket.
Your heart drops slightly, not wanting him to leave, and you stand with him.
“Well, how about I give you another book to read?”
“I was already planning on coming back,” He smirks, tilting slightly downward, “But I shan’t turn down a chance to read a book.”
“Good, because I love this one too.” You tell him, grabbing the book from your stash. You rip a piece of receipt paper from the small printer and quickly scribble on it, then tuck it into the front cover.
“And my name is Y/N, by the way. I didn’t get a chance to tell you last week.”
Loki smiles and takes the book from you, walking towards the door.
“Well, Y/N, it has been a pleasure. I shall see you again next week.”
***
“Brother, I see you have another book.” Thor says as he moves to walk alongside Loki, who was already reading the book summary.
Loki only makes a hum of acknowledgment, but doesn’t say anything.
They walk in silence towards the secluded alley where Loki can transport them back to the compound without curious eyes.
The silence is comfortable, yet eerie. Thor is still recovering from the shock of having Loki back, though it wasn’t the same Loki he lost on that forsaken ship.
And Loki… He’s just trying to wrap his head around everything that has happened. Everything he missed because he jumped from 2012 to 2021. He didn’t get to say goodbye to Frigga. He didn’t get to have a last look at Asgard. And now the one woman Loki is sure he cannot live without, doesn’t remember him.
They get back to the compound without incident, and Loki heads back to his room like he always does, choosing to interact with the Avengers as little as possible, lest there be a fight.
He tilts his head up slightly, eyes screwed shut and fingers pinching the bridge of his nose, “Friday, is it? Where is the spider child?”
“Peter is in the penthouse. Would you like me to relay a message to him?”
Loki bites his lip. Is he really going to do this?
Yes, he supposes he is.
“Can you ask him to come to my quarters?”
“Of course.”
Loki paces, waiting for Peter. After several minutes, there’s a tentative knock at the door.
“Come in.”
It opens slowly, revealing a confused Peter.
“Hey, Friday said you asked for me?”
“Yes.” Loki nods, then hands the boy a small piece of paper.
The same paper you put into the book earlier in the day.
Peter, now fully in the room, takes the paper and shoots a curious glance at Loki, before reading.
~
I don’t know if you have a cell phone, or even know what one is.
But if you do, feel free to text or call me :)
“If you tell anyone about this, I shall have your head.” Loki hisses, but there’s no heat behind it. Peter is one of the few humans Loki cares about dearly. The little shit had somehow managed to weasel his way into Loki’s notoriously cold heart within the first week.
And Peter knew this.
“Yeah, yeah,” He smirks, “Why are you showing it to me in the first place?”
“While I know what a cell phone is, I am unsure about how to acquire one. That is where you come in.”
Peter’s eyes light up, “Oh, this is going to be so much fun!”
Loki crosses his arms, fearing he may come to regret this.
***
“What do you want?”
“It’s been a while. Nice hearing your voice.”
“The feeling isn’t mutual.”
“Ouch.”
“Answer my question.”
“I want you to join us, of course. Thought that was clear by now.”
“Fuck off.”
“Well, figured I’d try... Anyways, I received word that Loki is back on Earth.”
“Not sure why you think I care, or how this concerns me.”
“I would like for you to bring him in.”
“I don’t work for you. Use your own goons.”
“He’s protected by Thor, and the Avengers by default. But you could easily-”
“Like I said. I don’t work for you. Why don’t you try intimidating one of your other experiments?”
“Star-”
“That’s not my name. Goodbye.”
Let It Snow (Steve x reader) part two
In which (Y/N)’s cousin, Bucky, comes home for the holidays with a friend along and decided to stay for Christmas Eve when a heavy snow storm hits home.
Contains: more fluff, small smut (like teasing), clingy sister, more cousin!Bucky
Note: Here’s part two! Omg I never thought I’d post this so quickly, I just got so happy with the reviews from part one that I finished part two instantly 😂 so, here it is!
For those who haven’t read part one, here it is!
...
“(Y/N)...” Steve trailed off, a smile on his lips as he looked away from you and tried to find the words to say after you told him you were proud of him. You could clearly see he was suddenly flustered and you never thought you could make someone like him all sheepish and bothered like that. But you weren’t complaining either.
He somehow gave up in talking and looked up to you again, your heart never failing to flutter whenever his eyes would meet yours. You were trying so hard not to get all flustered yourself. Just when he was about to speak up another voice spoke and you couldn’t have asked for a worse timing.
“Steve!” It was Christina. “Is my sister really letting you wash the dishes?? Shame on you (Y/N), he’s a guest!”
Steve’s smile slowly faltered as he faced Christina. “It’s fine, really. I volunteered to help her.”
Christina shook her head. And a little more softly, she said, “No, Steve, (Y/N) can take care of it. You should be in the living room with us!”
Before Steve could protest you beat him to it. “Steve, just go.”
“(Y/N)—“
“They’re just dishes, Steve, don’t worry about it.” You forced out a chuckle to convince Steve you were going to be fine. Although you really enjoyed his company, and you felt something in the air between the both of you, you didn’t want the rest of your family telling you off for letting a guest do the dishes. Christina’s scolding was enough for you.
When Steve didn’t move an inch and instead continued to stare at you with a worried look, you shooed him off with your hands half-heartedly. “Now shoo, both of you. Christina’s been wanting to talk to you anyway.”
Christina snapped her head at you and gave you a look that completely said shut up or I’ll kill you and all you could do was snicker. When Steve turned to face your sister her annoyed look completely fell and gave him her award-winning, innocent smile that most guys her age always fell for. Your sister was, indeed, gorgeous and you were afraid to admit that she finally got Steve’s attention.
“Now, come on, I heard you like pudding.” Christina’s voice began to fade away as she dragged Steve back to the living room.
You couldn’t help but shake your head in disbelief. Your sister was insistent. Poor Steve.
“What was that all about?” Another voice piped in just when you thought you were all alone again. It was Bucky.
“Typical Christina.” You shrugged, rinsing off the last few dishes before joining Bucky who was leaning against the counter. “What brings you here?”
“I was eavesdropping.”
“What?”
He said it so simply that you weren’t sure if he was being serious or just joking.
“Stevie kinda likes you,” he pointed out and you almost choked.
“What are you talking about?” You asked in disbelief. “We were just talking. How—“
And then it hit you. Bucky was literally eavesdropping already when Steve first came in the kitchen to help you. You honestly thought he came by when Christina took Steve away.
“Oh you’ve gotta be kidding me.”
Bucky only laughed. “I know Steve too well, (Y/N). He’s usually so reserved and shy and I’ve never heard him talk that much to someone he barely knew before. And—and, you got him all flustered! Yeah I get he’s a soft and sweet guy but you don’t often see a hot and bothered Steve.”
Now he was being ridiculous, you thought. “Hot and bothered?? Buck, we were literally just talking!”
“But you’re not even a little bit attracted?? Don’t you find him hot or cute or somethin’?” He pushed, his whole body now facing you with so much concentration on his face you were almost convinced he wasn’t kidding around.
He is kidding around, isn’t he?
“I, uh...well,” fuck, how could you even put it to words? He was the most handsome and downright hottest man you’ve met in your entire existence! Who isn’t even attracted to this man?? “Yeah, Buck. I think he’s really cute.”
He suddenly grinned. “Perfect.”
“Wait, I’m gonna have to stop you right there. If you’re even thinking of setting me up with him you must have forgotten you promised my sister that you introduce Steve to her. Not to me.” You pointed out, crossing your arms across your chest as you faced him as well. His face made a look of realization as he groaned out.
“Christina’s hot and she’s definitely beautiful, there’s no denying that. But I don’t think she’s Steve’s type.” He said in a quieter tone.
You frowned. “Why not?”
“Oh you know your sister, sometimes she can get too wild. No offense, but I think she’s too loud and straightforward for Steve. Steve’s more of the quiet and lowkey type.” He replied, shrugging as he went back to leaning against the counter, facing the open door that led to the living room.
“Oh, so you think I’m quiet and lowkey?” You scoffed half-heartedly. “I know how to live too, you know.”
“(Y/N), you know what I mean. Compared to your sister, you’re way more soft and benevolent. And from what Steve goes through everyday when being in the army, he could use someone like you to keep him cool and collected.” Bucky explained. And somehow, he was right about you. You were more reserved and preferred staying in your room than go partying. You were never the loud one; the kind of person who tells jokes or is the life of a party. You were more tranquil.
And you liked it that way.
“And I’m not doing this just because of your personality. Steve seemed so comfortable being with you earlier and to see him talk to someone else who isn’t me or Sam means it’s progress or that he likes you.” He added with a fond smile.
Before you could reply he took your arm and dragged you out the kitchen and towards the living room. “Now, come on. Let’s make this work. I want Steve to be happy again.”
“Buck, I’m kinda lost here...” you trailed off with a frown as you let yourself get dragged to the other room by your cousin. And you were indeed slightly confused with Bucky’s words. ‘It’s progress’, ‘want Steve to be happy again’, what did that all mean exactly?
You entered the room with Bucky and you quickly spotted Steve and Christina talking at the far end of your living room, slightly away from your family who were chatting with drinks in hand and your cousins talking and laughing in a small circle of their own. But it seemed like Christina was the only one who was doing most of the talking. Steve was looking anywhere but at her, looking like he wanted to get out of the conversation.
“Come on, let’s join the two.” Bucky said as he let go of your arm and you both walked towards Steve and your sister side by side. When you were near Steve noticed you and he somehow looked relieved.
“Hey, do you mind if we join?” Bucky piped in as he stood next to Christina and draped an arm around her. “What were you guys talking about?”
“I was telling Steve about this one time I chased off a robber who tried to steal my best friend’s purse...” and as she droned on about her epic story that she told you for the nth time that you probably knew every word by now, you stole a glance at Steve and you were surprised to see that he was already staring at you with a shy smile on his lips.
“She’s trying to impress you.” You told Steve quietly, making sure Christina doesn’t hear you.
He chuckled. “It’s a heroic story, I must say.”
“Ugh, I’ve heard that story countless of times already.” And it was true. It happened a year ago when Christina and her best friend was walking to their favorite café when a man in a black coat and black cap grabbed her best friend’s purse then started running away with it. Christina, of course, was there to save the day by sprinting just as fast as the robber until she was a few steps away from him before she jumped on him. Their little confrontation caught a policeman’s attention who just so happened to be standing close by.
“Would you like something to drink?” Steve suddenly asked, snapping you back to reality and you were slightly caught off-guard by his question.
“Oh, uh...sure.” You nodded over to your uncles who were drinking beer and his eyes followed to where you were staring at. “You want beer?”
“Yeah, beer’s good.” He nodded. You began walking back to the kitchen where your dad had a stash of beers kept in your fridge as Steve followed you close behind. He was probably looking for an excuse to leave his conversation with Christina.
Luckily the beanbags in front of the fireplace weren’t occupied so you and Steve sat there, drinking your beer while keeping warm by the fire. You couldn’t help but be happy that you’re with Steve again.
“So,” you began, licking your lips after taking two sips of your beer. “Where are you going home?”
“Boston.” He replied. “It’s a few hours from here.”
“So I’m guessing you’ll be leaving early in the morning?” You asked, slightly disappointed that your time with Steve was slowly running out. You admit that you’re already attracted to him and you didn’t know when you both will meet again, which made it even worse.
“Yeah, I guess. My mom is expecting me to come home tomorrow night for Christmas Eve. It’s been a few years since I’ve spent the holidays with them.” He replied and you could see the longing in his eyes when he said it.
“Well, not to worry.” You told him with a grin. “In a couple more hours you’ll finally be with them again and just in time for Christmas Eve.”
He grinned back at you. God, he was adorable!
After a few moments of silence, he spoke up. “But I don’t want to leave just yet.”
“What? Why?”
He took a long sip of his beer before looking at you with a quick wink. It was subtle, but you were damn sure you caught it. “I still wanna spend more time with you.”
You could feel your cheeks and neck and whole face heat up as you looked away and tried to hide the goofy grin on your lips. Was this man flirting with you??
“Hey, no worries. We still have the rest of the night to ourselves.” You told him, your voice slightly quivering but he didn’t seem to notice.
And you both did just that. The two of you spent the whole hours of the evening just talking and getting to know each other while finishing off a couple of beers in front of the fireplace. You didn’t know how long you sat there with him but when you looked around after finishing your fourth bottle, everyone was gone. It was only you and Steve left. And he seemed to notice this, as well.
“Oh fuck, how long have we been here??” He asked incredulously, laughing a little.
“A couple of hours...?” You asked, staring at the grandfather clock that stood near you, and you were surprised to see that it was already midnight.
“Steve, we’ve been here for five hours!” You exclaimed. You were already slightly tipsy and Steve as well. His face was already flushed and he wouldn’t stop smiling.
“Well, I think it’s time to retreat to our rooms.” His words were slightly slurred. You both stood up from your beanbags, and you watched as Steve held his hands up and took one long stretch that made his shirt raise a little that showed off his skin. Goodness, his v-line.
He cleared his throat and your eyes quickly went up to him, feeling yourself heat up when you saw the smirk on his lips. You’ve been caught checking him out and the fucker knows it.
“Come on, I’ll take you to your room.” You quickly said, turning around and before you could walk any further Steve got a hold of your arm and pulled you back to him.
His pull was hard and sudden that you slightly stumbled backwards until you felt his body against your back. You were too shocked to even move. You felt his hands on your shoulders before he turned you around and you were facing him. He had a small and more sober smile on his lips.
“I didn’t get my hug yet.” He said and you cock your head slightly to the side, smiling.
“Hug? What for?”
He then engulfed you in a tight yet surprisingly warm hug, his strong arms wrapping around your smaller frame and his chin resting on top your head.
“It’s a thank you hug. And an I’ll miss you hug.” He replied, not letting you go. You couldn’t help but laugh at how adorable he is.
“I’ll miss you too, Steve. I hope to see you soon.” And you let your arms wrap around him as well.
“I really wanna see you again, you know? I just love hanging around with you and one night is not enough for me.” He said, letting go of the hug as he gave you a sad look.
“I can never get enough of you.” You confessed. And fuck, because that was not supposed to leave your mouth!
You looked up at him with wide eyes and all he did was chuckle.
“You’re cute, (Y/N). I can never get enough of you, either.”
Well, you certainly weren’t expecting that kind of reply. But then again, who’s complaining!
“Come on, hot stuff. You’re drunk and you need sleep.” You said as you rolled your eyes, trying to hide the warmth of your cheeks.
“Hot stuff, eh? You think I’m hot?” Steve asked, wiggling his eyebrows at you and you shoved him to which he didn’t move one bit. Damn that strong soldier build.
“Shut up.” You shoved him again before you began your way up to his shared room with Bucky as Steve followed you close behind.
“Come on, admit it! You clearly said it yourself!”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did.”
“No, I didn’t Steve.”
“Yes, you did (Y/N).”
“Steve, I—“ you were cut off when you suddenly felt yourself being pushed back against a wall and your heart hammered against your chest when Steve’s face inched closer to yours. His hands rested against both sides of your face, trapping you with his body close to yours.
“So you didn’t call me hot stuff? This doesn’t turn you on at all? You don’t find this hot?” He whispered, his storm blue eyes turning darker as you continued to stare up at him.
“S-Steve...” you whispered.
“Because trust me, I can get you all hot and bothered before you could even say yes please.” He said in a husky tone as he neared his lips to your ear.
“You turn me on, (Y/N). Your innocence drives me mad.” He growled out.
You closed your eyes and you let out an involuntary whimper. You couldn’t even believe this was happening!
“Steve, you’re drunk.” You whispered.
“Drunk or sober, you’d still drive me mad, (Y/N).” He replied. “I want you.”
He let his forehead rest against yours and the contact made you shiver. “But I’m gonna wait until you’ll want me just as much. I’m gonna make you want me just as much.”
You were silent. You were speechless. You didn’t know what to do. You were frozen in your place even when he let you go already.
“I’ll see you again soon, (Y/N). I have to.”
“What the hell are you doin on the floor, pal?” Bucky’s voice sounded foggy as the message transmitted to Steve’s sensitive ears. He couldn’t hear anything above the high-pitched ring vibrating through his canals and taste the blood from biting the inside of his cheek. He was frozen, not in fear, but shame, humiliation, and unexplainable uncertainty.
Steven Grant Rogers was officially the world’s biggest fuck up. Usually he could talk his way out of any troubling situation merely with his persuasive smile and easy-going personality, but Y/N destroyed him with her ingenuously quick tipped words. Steve kept thinking about the despondent look in her eyes before she abruptly slammed the door in his face. It was guaranteed to torment him not only during his waking hours but without question in the lingering night terrors yet to come.
Out of the blue, a large hand lingered upon his shoulder before the intruder cautiously shook him alerting him of the stranger’s very close proximity; “Steve, everything alright man?” It was Bucky. The only other person in this god forsaken building that probably didn’t want him flayed alive…at least not yet.
“Can I uh, ask why you are on the ground?”
Still stunned from his previous interaction with Y/N; he had no other choice but to man up to what he’d done. The words were like molting lava ready to escape a treacherous terrain but he reverted to simplistic quacking getting to the meat of the breakup. All confidence disappearing, Steve murmured;
“She dumped me.”
Steve felt Bucky’s grasp tighten against his right shoulder, giving him a hard pat for good measure before proceeding onward; “Well, she was pretty upset when I saw her this morning. That girl talks in code majority of the time so I didn’t really get the full story. I guess it didn’t end well based off the dumbfounded expression etched onto your face right now, hmm?”
Rapidly turning his head to meet another set of familiar baby blues, Steve no longer had control of what spewed from his lips at that very moment; “You don’t know shit, Bucky. I thought you were on my side.”
Exasperated, Bucky refuted back quicker than lightning; “Hey man, don’t take your frustrations out on me. I’ll always be on your side but I also have no freaking idea what really is going. So, please enlighten me to what the hell is exactly happening.”
Grunting, Steve no longer saw any point to hiding his demons. Sooner or later, the entire team would know how much of a dick he truly was. Might as well get ahead of the game.
“I slept with Nat. I made a colossal lapse in judgment and carelessly shattered Y/N. That’s what happened.”
Bucky backed away from his friend, unaware of how to process the information he was given. Thinking back to his earlier conversation with Y/N, Bucky finally started to connect the dots and align the context clues. The wheels in his mind rotated on full speed wondering just how Captain America found himself in such a predicament. He tapped his knee in hopes of getting the super soldier up and out of the hallway so they could continue this discussion in private. He definitely needed the gaps filled in for him even if he had to twist his best friend’s arm. Bucky was determined to get to the bottom of this.
                Y/N’s POV:
The cooling sensation of the door felt wonderful against Y/N’s tense back muscles. Her head clonked against the surface reminding her that she indeed had just kicked Steve Rogers out of her sight, and it felt fucking superb. She sauntered towards her bed faceplanting into an array of cush pillows aligning her headboard. Y/N wasn’t much for history but at that exact moment she felt like an amazon warrior; powerful and assertive. Throughout history, falling in love never got an easy reputation. Lives destroyed, homes ruined, families broken due to people’s selfish belief in the power of love. No one dared speak of its real consequences caged in the darkest corners of humanity. Awaiting the broken hearted like thorny vines on a rose bush; enticing from afar luring in its prey before singe-handedly attacking in the name of devoted adoration. That was certainly one way to lure the gullible and weak minded.
She was neither, at least not anymore. Y/N rolled over gazing at her ceiling. For once the pressure in her chest dissipated, oxygen flowing into her airways. She was able to breath for the first time in months. She should’ve done this sooner. Y/N was now beginning to understand who her knight in shining armor truly was…the woman she had always been. Thinking back on Steve’s trepidation, Y/N spotted that her problem was she allowed herself to be wanted so badly, she couldn’t tell it wasn’t love at all. Initially noticing the beautiful wrapping paper that entailed her gift before understanding who really was layered within Steve Rogers.
Y/N didn’t let herself off the hook that easily. It takes two to tango when dancing with the devil and she eagerly obliged him. She settled for his pretentious impression of friendship permitting it to linger towards sex because she wanted him. Revenge was far too personal but vengeance, vengeance was cunning, detrimental, and brought a sickening grin to Y/N’s rosy lips.
So long to the girl who was sweet and simple. Y/N refused to be what people tell her to be. That Y/N was long dead. But, before she could concoct her masterplan her brain swam mindlessly begging for sleep, her lids weighed heavily as Y/N found her eyes closing and her surroundings go black.
When Y/N awoke, her bones ached in a lethargic manner and she was in desperate demand of vodka; the perfect numbing agent.   Her limbs riddled from stress; she stretched, a loud yawn escaping its way out. It was then Y/N realized she wasn’t alone in her room. Impossible. After giving Steve the boot, she had made sure Jarvis had secured all locks and rejected all wandering guests.
A calm red glow caught her attention in the corner of her room. Wanda. Though intrusive, Wanda’s company was pacifically soothing and exactly what Y/N yearned for.
Wanda watched intuitively staring in Y/N’s direction unwillingly to break the peaceful calm.
“Wanda, I’m not blind. I can clearly see you creeping in the corner.”
Wanda sassed back at rapid fire; “Oh my god, she speaks! Wow, for a second I thought you were dead.”
A giggle passed Y/N’s lips, it felt refreshing to laugh; “I thought you read minds. Didn’t you get the memo I’m in mourning?”
Clearly amused, Wanda accepted Y/N’s bait; “Hmm, who died?”
Y/N bit the inside of her lip thinking twice before speaking; “The old Y/N. She’s dead and gone.”
“Interesting. And who is gracing my presence as we speak?”
“A badass bitch who no longer has a filter to deal with Captain America’s bullshit. That’s who.”
Instinctively, Wanda blushed unable to stop her powers from intruding upon Y/N’s thoughts.
“I’m sooo sorry, Y/N. I freaking slipped and please believe me when I say I didn’t mean to…”
Wanda neared her bed sitting at the corners edge, not to close but just enough. Knowing her darkest fruition finally felt quite liberating even if she hated to admit it. Of course, Y/N was irritated that Wanda unintentionally read her most secretive thoughts, she couldn’t fathom being mad at her friend for trying to help.
“I can’t believe him! Out of all people and Nat knew how you felt about him? I’m all about keeping the peace…but this is unacceptable.”
A breath whooshed through Y/N’s chest as she gathered herself; “You’re telling me…Steve almost said he loved me before I stopped him. There were so many things I wanted to tell him. But honestly, I hated knowing he’d been inside of her…given her such an intimate part of himself. Please tell me I’m not crazy?”
Y/N hated bringing Wanda, the idealistic middle (wo)man into this brass situation, but the white elephant in the room needed to be addressed at some point or another.
“Я понимаю мою любовь.” (I understand my love)
“я чувствую себя таким разбитым” (I feel so broken)
“You don’t have to explain. I literally…. get it. I just want to punch him in that rightful nose of his. Jesus! That man is infuriating.”
“He wasn’t always that way. Trust me.”
“But you love hi—”
“No….: Shaking her head in vast disagreement. “No. No. No. Please don’t say that, please.”
“…if you insist Y/N. I’m on your side regardless but I’m also bipartisan if Stark asks.”
Y/N couldn’t deny the inevitable; “Thank you…. Thank you for being a friend, Wanda.”
   ------
Y/N’s resounding feelings were more than Wanda could handle without alcohol’s boost of influence. So, she stupidly made her way towards Tony’s lounge promising Wanda they’d catch up later. Nothing better than a little peace and quiet Y/N prayed, banking on its abandoned state.
Upon entrance, Y/N’s mouth watered, her throat parched as she appreciated the overly stocked bar Stark was so keen on maintaining.  Vodka soda with extra lime was her main pick of poison. She reveled in the slow burn down into her lungs, she moaned with pleasure.
This was exactly what the doctor ordered. Y/N started to worry about being left alone with her thoughts for too long would be a bad thing, or a more challenging way of figuring her shit out.
Of course, Tony chose the finest of leather couches who’s price she probably didn’t dare guess. Y/N fell right into its cushiony heaven trying to not spill her drink in the process. She brought the chilled glass to her lips before gulping the remainder of the iced beverage no longer in existence. With her heels kicked up and feelings at bay for the meantime, Y/N briefly closed her eyes welcoming the darkness.
An enigmatic voice came out of the corner like a ghost lingering in the shadows, startling Y/N.
“Y/N. So very nice to see you again.”
A voice morphed from her very own nightmares.
“Hail Hydra моя милая богиня” (my sweet girl).
title: “lights out”
characters: reader x bucky barnes, Steve, (other avengers mentioned)
word count:1,017
warning: fear of the dark, swearing, f l u f f
a/n: i’m so sorry for not posting in literally 5 months but it’s a new year and i’m ready to start getting back at it!
It was now 11:29 at night. All the other avengers had left about 5 hours ago for one of Tony’s elite fundraising parties.
“(y/n) please come, I can’t go if neither of my best friends are there, it’ll be awful without you!” her best friend, Steve had pleaded. She wasn’t surprised when she heard that Bucky wasn’t going. He never goes to these types of things. The only reason (y/n) wasn't going was because she was dead tired having just come back from a mission with Fury.
To be honest, on different circumstances, (y/n) would do anything not to be stuck home alone with Bucky. When they first met, she found him sweet, and he’s obviously a very attractive man. But those feelings changed as he started to act cold to her, throwing glares in there every once and a while. She thought he hated him.
:: :: ::
(y/n) had created the perfect night. She was snuggled in layers of fluffy blankets and pillows on her bed while eating ungodly amounts of popcorn and hot chocolate. To top it all off, she had her favorite movie playing, Titanic. Something about ‘97 Leo...
She had reached the dancing scene. Jack and Rose where spinning on the dance floor. Both laughing and falling in love,then, from across the room, Rose was trying to tell Jack something when all of the sudden the whole tv screen went dark. As did the lights around (y/n).
“fuck.” (y/n) exclaimed.She was terrified of the dark. Wriggling out of her bed with a sigh, (y/n) looked out of her bedroom window and saw that the whole city was out of power. Great. She thought.
With a shakey hand, she lit a candle and walked out of her room into the dark hallway of the Avengers tower mumbling to her self. “God, you’d think with all the money and access to technology, Tony would have a back-up generator or something.”
“Yeah you’d think, guess not though.” A voice startling (y/n) half to death came out of nowhere. She screamed in shock.
“What the fuck?!...Bucky?!” She held the candle up to get a better look.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
(y/n) sighs, “well that’s a shame, because you did a really good job at it.” And to her surprise, Bucky let out a laugh.
As if it were contagious, (y/n) started to chuckle along too. “Do you want to go sit down?” Bucky asked.
(y/n) nodded but as they started to make their way over to the couches, (y/n) tripped on one of Clint’s arrows that he left on the floor. She was preparing for for impact but instead of meeting the hard floor, (y/n) felt a strong pair of hands holding onto her. She looked up at Bucky and he just smirked. “You okay?” he asked her.
“Oh, um, yeah...thanks.” She stuttered out, intrigued by this new Bucky.
She must have been staring at him since he then asked her “What’s wrong?”.
“...Bucky, why are you being so nice to me? I thought you hated me?” (y/n) finally said after a while.
Bucky sighed and ran a hand through his hair, that wasn’t what he expected her to say. “I-I don’t hate you, (y/n), in fact, it’s quite the opposite.” He moved closer to her on the couch. “I remembered you said you were scared of the dark a long time ago. I came over here looking for you.”
(y/n) starts to smile a bit.”But wait, if you...like me, then why do you never talk to me? Or, sometimes I see you give me dirty looks...” She puts her head down.
Bucky’s heart shatters.”(y/n), i’m so sorry. I never wanted you to think that at all. I always got jealous when I saw how close you are with Steve. I was jealous because you seem to be closer with him than I am, and also I wan’t to be that close, maybe even more, with you.”.
(y/n) smiles and sighs. “I want to be that close with you too.” Just as she had started to forget that the power was out, a light breeze went through the tower, diminishing the flame. Wanda must have left her window open again.
Her smile drops. “No.” She stands up, away from Bucky. “No no no no no no ....Oh god, this can not be happening.” She stumble over her words, feeling her bottom lip start to quiver and her eyes start to water.
Bucky shoots up, moving towards her slowly, as if a sudden movement will send her running. He places a careful arm on her shoulder. She takes it in her hands and holds it tight.
Looking her in the eye, he says “(y/n) hey, hey, it’s okay...just breathe. Come on, let’s sit down, just keep looking at me.”
(y/n) snickers. “It’s kind of hard to look at you when I can’t fucking see you.”.
Bucky throw’s his head back laughing “See! It’s already working!” They sit back down on the couch and (y/n) rests her head on his chest and feels her swollen eyes resting.
:: :: ::
At around 5AM the next morning, the Avenger’s roll in after their long night of drinking and dancing. The morning sun is barely shining through the windows, leaving the room a light orange.
Walking in through the entrance with scruffy hair, Steve goes to the light switch.Flipping it up and down a couple times, he realizes the power went out. He gasps “(y/n)!” He exclaims before taking off running to your room.
As he ran to you, something caught his attention. He quickly turned around and saw (y/n) and Bucky, his two best friends, resting peacefully together on the couch.
Steve smiles to himself and starts heading to his room.
“Finally.” He says
:: :: :: hey guys! thank you for reading this! let me know what you think of it! xx
