OnePlus Nord 2 5G First Impressions: Still Finding North, The OnePlus Nord 2 5G starts at Rs. 27,999 in India.

The OnePlus Nord was launched in July last year to specialize in the sub-Rs. 25,000 price segment. As the OnePlus flagships got costlier and costlier, the OnePlus Nord promised good performance at a somewhat cheaper price. Now, it's been discontinued, clearing the way for a good cheaper model, the Nord CE 5G, and its true successor, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. This new OnePlus smartphone has an improved camera setup and a MediaTek Dimensity processor. Does it still deliver the OnePlus experience? I got my hands on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G and here are my first impressions of the device.

OnePlus Nord 2 price in India

The OnePlus Nord 2 starts at Rs. 27,999 in India for the bottom variant, which has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There are two more variants of the OnePlus Nord 2, one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and eventually 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage. These are priced at Rs. 29,999 and Rs. 34,999 respectively. I had the top-of-the-line variant with me for review.

The OnePlus Nord 2 looks familiar and seems in situ alongside the OnePlus 9 series and therefore the OnePlus Nord CE 5G (Review). learning the OnePlus Nord 2, it instantly feels premium to the touch. it's a 6.43-inch display with a camera hole within the top left corner for its 32-megapixel selfie shooter. The side-mounted fingerprint scanner is quick to unlock the device and given the 12GB of RAM that my review unit has, I didn't face any hiccups while multitasking. The “enhanced” MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI showed tons of promise and it will be interesting to check OnePlus's claims that there are additional camera, gaming, and display features enabled by the AI enhancement. The Realme X7 Max 5G (Review) and therefore the upcoming Poco F3 GT are two smartphones with an equivalent SoC, minus OnePlus' customizations, so it'll be interesting to ascertain how the OnePlus Nord 2 5G fares.

Overall, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G looks like an upgrade over the first Nord in every respect, supported the specs. I TEST A lot of phones here at WIRED. Smartphones incrementally change each year, and they’ve become more of an essential utility and less of a source of the tech world’s greatest innovations. I often appreciate their new features, but few of those enhancements spark actual joy. The OnePlus 7T, however, has done just that. Putting down the glossy, fingerprint-plastered Galaxy Note10 to review the matte glass 7T was both a relief and a reminder why OnePlus has continued to gain popularity as a smartphone brand year after year.

Like the company's previous devices, the 7T is a phone that showcases much of the best smartphone tech introduced in 2019 at a $600 price—more than $100 cheaper than many top rivals from Samsung, LG, and other manufacturers. What I’ve come to appreciate more is how it uses all that latest tech to enhance my life, often by getting out of my way. Its touch interface is simple and looks just like the brand new Google Android 10 OS it runs on, only a little easier to navigate. It’s just more pleasant, like a PB&J sandwich where mom cut the crust off just because she loves you.

Smooth and Frosty

If you’ve seen an expensive smartphone in the last two years, you know what the 7T looks and feels like, but I’ll describe it anyway. It has a 6.5-inch AMOLED display (that means deeper blacks and richer colors) that takes up its entire front. A teenie teardrop cutout hanging from the top of the screen holds a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

Like the similar and more expensive OnePlus 7 Pro, this display has a 90 Hz refresh rate, which makes the entire interface noticeably smoother. OnePlus calls it a Fluid AMOLED display, and it may live up to that name. Phones have been bumping up the resolution (this one has a 1080p HD screen), but the bump in refresh rate is more noticeable. Everything feels smoother and faster, with richer color than many displays.

The power and volume buttons are in all the right places, and OnePlus has kept its sound/mute/vibrate switch on the right side. It’s a dead-simple little toggle and worth every millimeter of its cutout, letting you easily silence your phone or perk it up anytime.

OnePlus was one of the first companies to introduce an in-display fingerprint sensor, and the latest iteration on this phone is faster than ever. I’ve had trouble with Samsung's on-screen sensors in the Galaxy S10 and Note10, but the optical fingerprint reader in the 7T does the trick in a way that’s more convenient than the fingerprint sensors on the back of many phones like the Google Pixel 3A.

The phone's frame is metal, and the back is covered in shimmering Gorilla Glass because ... well ... trends. It’s silly that the back is made of glass at all, given that we probably drop our phones more than anything besides our keys, and there's no big advantage to the glass here since the 7T doesn’t have wireless charging. But the “glacier blue” color certainly is sleek, and the frosted texture repels fingerprints better than some phones. OnePlus thankfully includes a clear case in the box. I suggest you slip it on.

All Spec’d Out

Between all that glass is a list of luxury technical specs. The 7T runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, which is half a tad speedier than the 855 on some earlier phones this year. It also comes with 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. (Sorry, no MicroSD slot; that’s all you get.) These are all fantastic numbers, as are the numbers you’ll see from benchmark performance tests. It’s a powerful phone, right up there with the best.

OnePlus doesn’t make a lot of changes to Android 10, but the changes it does make seem to (mostly) improve the phone's performance. You can more easily swipe up or down from anywhere on the homescreen to access the notification shade or pull up your entire list of apps. I also like the gesture controls that mimic recent iPhones, and the option to turn the back button into a swipe from the left side of the phone has worked well for me. Your mileage may vary, but you can disable these gestures controls and go back to a traditional back-button setup if you like.

The fact that the 7T even has the latest Google OS is a testament to the company’s focus on delivering software and security updates. It promises two years of updates for buyers of the 7T, and has demonstrated a positive track record on updates for older phones. This is notable—despite costing close to $1,000, most Android phones outside of Google’s Pixel line and Motorola's handsets do not get regular software updates, leaving security vulnerabilities exposed and new features out of reach.

With stereo speakers and a gaming mode that optimizes graphics (and can also restrict notifications and calls so you can play without interruption), this is an ideal machine for playing Mario Kart Tour, or any other high-end title, until your eyeballs fall out. Netflix looks lovely, as well.

I’ve ended most days having spent four or five hours with the screen active, and seen about 50 percent battery remaining. A few nights, it’s been closer to 30 to 40 percent, if I stay up late. This is good, but somewhat normal battery life. If you want to improve your power efficiency, you can turn the 90 Hz refresh rate down to a more normal 60 Hz. In a pinch, the included charger is very quick. It can juice the 7T up significantly in a half hour.

Sadly, like many high-end phones, there’s no audio jack (and no adapter in the box), but OnePlus sells an adapter for $13. And this phone also isn’t IP-rated for water resistance. OnePlus claims it will handle some rain pretty well, but you won’t want to drop it in the tub.

Ready to Zoom

When it comes to smartphones, you ain’t cool unless you have three rear cameras these days, and OnePlus always wants to be cool. Like the 7 Pro, it has a 48-megapixel standard rear shooter that outputs extra sharp 12-megapixel images, a 16-megapixel sensor beneath an ultrawide lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto. This lets you take shots that you can both zoom out a bit, and zoom in to 2X. There’s also a portrait mode, which adds a bokeh effect, the shallow depth-of-field trick that keeps the subject in focus but blurs the background in a close-up photo.

I had a great time shooting plenty of outdoor shots around Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the past week, and I've even enjoyed the extra stability of the Super Stable video mode, which uses the wide angle lens to better stabilize 1080p video; 4K 30 fps video is also available. Everything looks good, especially shots in the Nightscape mode. Like the new iPhone 11 and the latest Pixel phones, the 7T enhances night shots, adding more light, color and detail to areas that would have just appeared as black splotches on older phones. Night shots require a steady hand and a second or two wait, but they are a definite improvement.

OnePlus isn’t tampering with the formula that got it to the dance, and that’s good. The 7T is one of the most powerful phones you can buy, and it costs hundreds less than its peers. It also runs on all four major US carriers, and T-Mobile sells it directly.

I've recommended the Pixel 3A ($400) as the best phone to buy for a few months now, and given the performance it offers for the price, for many of you it still is the best phone. But if you are willing to spend an extra $200, the OnePlus 7T will give you a taste of the luxuries you’d otherwise miss out on.

At the heart of the new Mi 11 lies the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. The new 5nm chip is the first to use Arm’s new Cortex-X1 cores, with Qualcomm also claiming large GPU performance boosts this generation. What’s more different from the previous Snapdragon 865 flagship design is that the new S888 reverts back to a monolithic SoC design that integrates the 5G modem back into the SoC – in turn this means that there’s more PCB component space in available inside the phone and vendors can optimise their designs better. The new Mi 11 also features either 8GB or 12GB of the new LPDDR5 memory at its full 3200MHz speed (6400MT/s), and comes in either 128GB or 256GB storage variants, although we’re missing details on the specifications of the modules used here.

In terms of design, the new Mi 11 is quite a departure from the Mi 10, being a much sleeker device than its predecessor. Xiaomi has been able to reduce the bezels of the device on all sides, still using a curved front and back glass design that fits well into your palms. The new design is actually 0.9mm thinner than its predecessor, now coming in at 8.06mm, and also shaves 12g off its weight at 196g – still relatively heavy, but not as much as its predecessor. The most exciting feature of the Mi 11 has to be the new OLED screen. It’s grown a bit compared to its predecessor, filling in the space in place of the bezels, going from 6.67” to 6.81”, but the most important aspect of the phone is the fact that this is now a QHD class resolution at 3200 x 1440 – a first from Xiaomi OLED screen and a resolution we haven’t seen used by the company since back in the LCD days. Furthermore, this is a bleeding-edge display, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate, and is advertised as being a new generation 10-bit panel that also features up to 8192 brightness levels – pointing out to a new generation DDIC. The panel also is advertised as using a new next-generation emitter material, and Xiaomi claims it goes up to 1500 nits brightness, which is a notch above what we’ve seen from 2020 phones. Lastly, like a cherry on top of the cake, the panel features a staggering 480Hz touch input rate, which is the highest we’ve heard of in the mobile industry, and hopefully results in outstanding touch input and scrolling fluidity.  

Other features of the new design includes a redesigned camera setup, which transitions from a completely vertical camera arrangement to a new rounded square element with three camera modules. Instead of having a large camera bump edge and a single glass element protecting the whole camera arrangement, Xiaomi uses a three-step glass element, each thicker than the other, protecting the three cameras modules. It looks quite interesting and gives off a much more organic feel compared to other rectangular or more symmetric camera arrangements out there.

Unfortunately for today’s announcement the Mi 11’s camera specifications were quite sparse. What we do know is that the main camera is again a 108MP module, similar to that of its predecessor, but we don’t know if it’s the exact same sensor, or a newer iteration. What we do know is that the optics are definitely different as the aperture now lands in at f/1.89 instead of f/1.69 – an actual positive change in my view as the optics of the Mi 10 was one of its main weaknesses. Alongside the main camera there’s a 13MP ultra-wide angle with a 123° FoV and F/2.4 aperture, as well as a 5MP 2x optical 50mm equivalent telephoto module with f/2.2. That latter module sounds a bit lacklustre – maybe we’ll see an eventual Mi 11 Pro with a stronger telephoto module. Today’s announcement covers the Chinese variant of the phone, with the global and European variants certainly to follow in the next few weeks. Pre-orders for the Chinese models start today with delivering going out the 1st of January, with the Mi 11 with an 8+128GB variant coming in at ￥3999.00, or USD $611. Design

The Galaxy A52 5G is as simple as phones can get; you're getting a very standard design, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy A52 5G resembles its bigger cousins, the Galaxy S series of devices. Interestingly, the A52 looks more like the Galaxy S20 FE and Note 20 devices than it does Samsung's Galaxy S21.

The Galaxy S line is Samsung's safe bet on the flagship lineup, and the A52 is the safest device anyone can recommend, and that's especially true when it comes to design; this device is very much a practical phone with no frills.

On the front, you're getting a sizable 6.5-inch 1080p panel with a hole-punch camera. The screen is made of Gorilla Glass 5, and it should give you adequate scratch protection.

On the back, you'll find a plastic build that has the same matte finish as the base model Galaxy S21; it has a nice soft touch feel to it, and it feels great to hold.

Samsung sent me the Black color variant, and while it feels like the higher-end Galaxy S21, this finish is a fingerprint magnet. I found it quite cumbersome to clean the back of this device. I highly recommend getting a case if you end up getting this phone.

The back also houses the camera system, which looks similar to the Galaxy S20 FE, but Samsung refined the layout and took some design queues from its latest flagship. The S21 lineup used its metal frame to blend the camera module with the rest of the phone, and similarly, the A52's camera module seamlessly blends in with the rest of the back panel, almost as if it was one single piece of polycarbonate.

The sides of the Galaxy A52 are made of plastic, and they have a mirror look to make it look more like metal. You wouldn't notice the sides are plastic unless you happen to scratch them or pick up a more premium device to compare against.

The buttons are indistinguishable to its flagship cousins, and on the bottom, you even get a 3.5mm headphone jack—something that is missing in Samsung's flagship lineup.

While many will argue plastic feels less premium, I think Samsung made the right decision with this phone. Compared to my S21, the A52 is a larger phone, but when I picked it up, in contrast to my S21, I thought the A52 was lighter than my device. In reality, it's 20 grams heavier. Bigger phones generally feel unwieldy at times because of their size and weight, but choosing a plastic build all the way through makes the A52 feel like a much smaller device while getting the benefits of a larger battery and a larger display.

Overall, Samsung isn't going to wow anyone with the design of this phone, but that's not the point. The Galaxy A52 is a large device that brings practicality in a minimalist design, and for many people, it's sufficient for everyday use.

Display: Galaxy S21 Quality Without the Polish

The Galaxy A52 has the best screen I have seen in a mid-range device, and it shouldn't come as no surprise. This screen is essentially what you'll find on the Galaxy S21 and S21+, just without the polish. The Galaxy A52 packs a 6.5-inch, 1080p display with 120Hz. This screen size is in-between the S21 (6.1-inch) and the S21+ (6.7-inch). The resolution is the same as those two flagship devices, coming in at 1080 by 2400. The only difference between the Galaxy S21 and this A52 is the display brightness, the slightly worse-looking hole-punch camera, and the bezels.

The A52 has a maximum peak brightness at 800 nits, while the S21 can get up 1300. In real-world use, it is noticeable when you compare the devices side by side, but you're still going to be able to see the screen in direct sunlight.

The hole punch on the A52 is centered, just like the S21 series, but Samsung added a silver ring around the camera for some reason. It's distracting, even with the screen on. The silver ring is reflective, and it's always visible regardless of which angle you view it from. I've gotten used to it, but I think it was an unneeded design aesthetic that doesn't add to anything significant.

Finally, the bezels of the A52 are what make it short of its flagship cousins. The bezels on the A52 are generally larger than the S21, but the most noticeable aspect is the chin; the A52's chin is very prominent compared to the side and top bezels of the phone.

At the end of the day, comparing the A52 and S21 seems unnecessary. The two devices have marginal differences in display quality, and if you end up going with the A52, you won't be disappointed; the Galaxy A52's display is very responsive, vibrant, and has the same Samsung expertise most people have come to love. If you watch movies, play games, and use your device to edit photos, the display on the A52 is one of the best you could ask for at this price range. The only competition here is with Samsung's own devices.

When it comes to the cameras, I think Samsung did a great job balancing the feature set for this price range. The Galaxy A52 comes with a standard 64MP wide, a 12MP ultrawide, a niche 5MP macro camera, and a wasteful 5MP depth sensor. There is also a 32MP selfie camera.

The standard 64MP camera captures 16MP photos in the regular shooting mode, and it delivers useable images that maintain detail, even when there is less than desirable lighting. The 32MP selfie camera is another excellent aspect of this camera experience; you're getting usable photos that retain a good amount of detail; the main issue is Samsung's software. The front camera has face-smoothing, and it can give off some unnatural-looking photos at times.

Today, we'll be testing Samsung's new Galaxy A31, which, on paper, should succeed the Galaxy A30s. Compared to the latter, the new model offers a fourth rear camera, a bigger battery, a higher-resolution display, full support for Samsung Pay, and of course a higher price tag. Available in just a single configuration with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for Rs. 21,999, does the Galaxy A31 deserve a spot in our coveted list of top phones under Rs. 25,000?. Samsung Galaxy A31 Design: Been there, seen that

Even though the design of the Galaxy A31 isn't exactly fresh for a budget Samsung device, I do like the fact that it's slim and light. The all-polycarbonate body feels quite sturdy but it does pick up fingerprints easily. The phone has a noticeably thick chin below the screen, and an Infinity-U cutout at the top for the selfie camera.

There's a huge SIM tray on the left, for two SIM cards and a microSD card. The headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and a speaker are at the bottom. The back features Samsung's Prism Crush pattern, of which we have the blue variant. This phone is also available in back and white trims. The quad-camera cluster at the back is a rectangular module and doesn't bulge outward much.

Overall, the Galaxy A31 was comfortable to use on a daily basis during this review. It's a little wide, and reaching the top of the display isn't the easiest, but One UI has gestures to help with this. After seeing many phones in the series with the same pattern on the back, the design has started to feel a little boring at this point. The box contents are pretty standard too: there's a silicone case, a charger, a USB cable, and a headset.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Display: AMOLED never disappoints

The Galaxy A31 has a sharp 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080x2400 pixels) Super AMOLED display. I found it to be more than adequate in terms of brightness, even in the daytime. Colours were a bit too rich for my taste in the default ‘Vivid' mode, but this can be toned down in the settings. The display is flat, without any curves on the sides, but there are no sharp edges either so performing gestures isn't a problem.

There's an in-display fingerprint sensor, which isn't very quick but works well as long as you give it a firm press. The time taken to wake the screen, along with the fingerprint animations, make this whole process feel a bit laggy. I usually relied on face recognition, which I found to be quicker. The always-on display has basic customisations such as the ability to show what song is playing, and a choice of different clock styles.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Performance: Quite disappointing

Despite its decent build quality and good display, its performance is a big issue. Samsung has used the MediaTek Helio P65 octa-core SoC, and I would have no problem with it on a phone that costs Rs. 10,000, but I certainly don't expect it on something that costs above Rs. 20,000. Compared to even the Galaxy M21, which uses the Exynos 9611 and costs a lot less, the Galaxy A31 is slower in most of the popular benchmarks.

Samsung's One UI v2.1, based on Android 10, also feels a bit sluggish overall. There's a persistent hint of stutter in the animations, and lag when I was switching between apps. It didn't hamper usage too much but having to wait that extra second or two for things to happen is not an experience I expect at this price point. One UI itself is fairly feature-rich with lots of shortcuts, themes, and gestures to play around with. There's also Dolby Atmos, but only for wired and wireless headphones.

The Galaxy A31 supports Google's Widevine L1 certification, which means video streaming apps can play content at the display's native resolution. The single speaker gets fairly loud but the audio quality is strictly average. Simple games run well, but heavier titles such as Asphalt 9: Legends or even PUBG Mobile ran at reduced graphics settings. Gameplay was tolerable but they didn't look as good as they should have. I also noticed a bit of heating when playing games for longer durations.

Okay, so far the Galaxy A31 isn't looking too appealing, but perhaps it can redeem itself with its camera performance. The four cameras on the back include a primary 48-megapixel sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens, a 5-megapixel depth camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera. The apertures of all the cameras aren't particularly impressive, with even the one on the main camera being just f/2.0. The front camera uses a 20-megapixel sensor.

The camera app should be familiar to most Samsung users, though I did find a few missing features which ought to have been there. Keeping in mind the price of the phone and its positioning in the series, it's a little odd to not have 4K video recording as an option, and even a Night mode for low-light stills. Pro mode is crippled, with no option to adjust the shutter speed. Autofocus speed is decent, but this phone tends to hunt for focus in low light.

You do get Samsung's ‘Scene optimiser' AI engine, and the ability to save stills and video in the HEIF and HEVC formats. Under good light, the main sensor captures decent-looking photos. Images are captured as 12-megapixel shots by default but you can shoot at the full 48-megapixel resolution if needed. In low light, noise is suppressed well but details are lacking, which is noticeable when you zoom in to photos a bit. Close-ups shot under good light fare better, with good details and colours, but due to shutter lag, even slight movements can cause blurring.

The wide-angle camera captures comparatively weaker details, and HDR isn't as effective as on the main camera. In low light, details are much worse and there's no Night mode to help salvage shots.

Live Focus works decently well, and the amount of background blur can be adjusted for portrait shots. The macro camera does a fair job with extreme close-ups but I didn't find image quality to be much better than what I've seen from phones with 2-megapixel sensors.

Videos are limited to 1080p resolution, but quality is decent given ample light when shooting with the primary camera. The Galaxy A31 doesn't offer even electronic stabilisation, so movements with the camera look jerky. You can't switch to the wide-angle camera while recording but you can switch to it before you begin. As expected, video quality is just about acceptable under good light but very poor in low light. There's no stabilisation here either.

The selfie camera captures 12-megapixel stills by default (8 megapixels if you choose a tighter crop). However, you can shoot at the native resolution too. Selfies are generally usable when shooting outdoors, in daylight. Skin tones tend to look a little too warm and HDR can be a hit or miss, but it's not too bad. The camera struggles to reproduce good details in low light, often leaving you with soft textures and weak details.

Overall, the cameras on the Galaxy A31 are very underwhelming and lack many features that you'd find in many phones that cost a lot less.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Battery: Pretty good

If there is one redeeming quality about the Galaxy A31, then it would be battery life. The 5,000mAh battery lasted for 18 hours and 11 minutes in our HD video loop test, which is very good. Even with regular usage, I was easily able to go well beyond a day on a single charge. There is 15W fast charging, so you can charge the battery up to 50 percent in an hour, but filling it completely takes well over two hours

Verdict: Who is the Samsung Galaxy A31 for?

I'm struggling to find a good reason for the Galaxy A31 to exist, and I honestly cannot think of one. But in exchange you get a much more expansive and immersive display, which not only fits more content on the display at once but gives you a bigger keyboard for typing and a mini movie theater in your pocket. 

The iPhone 12 Pro Max looks more premium than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. And that’s because of the new phone’s sleeker-looking flat edges. The polished gleaming gold stainless steel on the unit was particularly eye-catching. It’s the smartphone equivalent of jewelry. However, the finish picks up fingerprints in a hurry.

The notch on the iPhone 12 Pro remains pretty large, but the TrueDepth camera still comes in very handy for Face ID. I just wish Apple found a way to integrate Touch ID in the display or the power button like it did for the new iPad Air. 

At 6.33 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches at 8.03 ounces, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a bit heavier than its predecessor. But you get a bigger display in roughly the same size, as Apple trimmed the borders around the screen. 

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also tougher this time around. You get a Ceramic Shield display up front that’s rated for four times the drop performance as well as a better IP68 water resistance rating that goes down to 6 meters instead of 4 meters.

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Display

With its 6.7-inch OLED display, the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s OLED panel is smaller but brighter than the 6.9-inch Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. When watching K-drama, I enjoyed an explosion of colors that almost made me forget I was holding a phone. 

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also happens to offer the most color-accurate display we’ve ever seen. The panel registered 0.07 on the Delta-E test, where 0 is perfect. The Note 20 Ultra notched 0.24.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s display averaged 654 nits in our lab tests, compared to a slightly higher 662 nits for the Galaxy. But outdoors we found the iPhone’s screen easier to read in direct sunlight. 

The only thing missing from the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a smooth 120Hz rate, which would have made for smoother scrolling and even better gameplay like it does on the latest Samsung flagships. Here’s hoping for the iPhone 13.

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Cameras

The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers the best cameras on any phone, and that’s saying something considering how good the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Huawei Nova 7i are.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a larger main sensor than the iPhone 12 Pro, which is designed to deliver an 87 percent improvement in low light conditions vs the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The main lens on the iPhone 12 Pro Max also features a fast f/1.6 aperture and a LiDAR sensor for faster auto focus.

You also get a 2.5x optical zoom from the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 12MP telephoto lens, which is behind the Note 20 Ultra’s 5x zoom but is better than the 2x on the iPhone 12 Pro.

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Performance

When it comes to sheer performance, the A14 Bionic processor in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, paired with 6GB of RAM, has no equal.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also outperformed the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on the 3D Mark Wild Life graphics benchmark. Apple’s handset notched 41 frames per second, compared to just 24 fps for the Galaxy.

As expected, the iPhone 12 Pro Max also blew away the Android competition on Geekbench 5. Apple’s phone hit 4,111 on the multi-core test and 1,603 on single core. Compare that to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, whose Snapdragon 865 Plus chip scored just 3,294 and 985.

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: 5G

The iPhone 12 Pro Max supports every flavor of 5G, including sub-6GHz and mmWave. The iPhone 12 Pro Max maxed out at 211 Mbps for downloads and 77.5 Mbps for uploads. 

Like other iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max can automatically switch to 4G via its Smart Data Mode. This comes in handy mostly when the screen is off, such as when you’re streaming music. 

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Battery life

One of the biggest reasons to splurge on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the extra endurance you get from its larger battery. The iPhone 12 Pro Max lasted 10 hours and 53 minutes. That’s nearly two hours longer than the regular iPhone 12 Pro, which endured for 9:06. 

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was slightly behind the 12 Pro Max with a runtime of 10:26 over 5G, which dropped to 7:59 with the 120Hz display mode on.

 iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Charging

Like the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple doesn’t include a charger in the box with the 12 Pro Max. That might be the green thing to do, as Apple has argued, but it’s also annoying, especially if you want to fast charge your phone.

A 950 pesos 20W fast charger will get a drained iPhone 12 Pro Max to just under 50% in 30 minutes. But MagSafe is getting more attention, because it works with the magnets in the back of the iPhone 12 Pro Max to easily attach a charger. This 1,950 pesos charger is 15W, which is slower, but it’s twice as fast as previous iPhone wireless chargers.

Just keep in mind that you’ll need a power brick and MagSafe adapter, as they’re sold separately. 

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also works with a growing array of MagSafe accessories, including cases and wallets you can attach, as well as Apple’s 6,450 pesos MagSafe Duo charger that juices your iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously. Again, though, you'll need to spring for a 20W charger for this accessory to work.

LG K92 5G Review

Over the past few years, midrange phones have come into their own. Gone are the mediocre build quality and disappointing displays; instead, you can easily find something with a gorgeous screen and top-notch construction for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the LG K92 5G ($400) is the wrong kind of blast from the past. This 5G smartphone can't match its obvious competitors, the Google Pixel 4a 5G ($499) and TCL 10 5G UW ($400). It's a carrier-locked phone, like the TCL 10 5G, but only works on AT&T's painfully slow low-band 5G network. It also suffers from poky performance, short battery life, and lackluster build quality that make it hard to recommend.

Big Display, Flimsy Build

At 6.6 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 7.1 ounces, the K92 5G is a big phone that will fight for room in your pocket. The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.7-inch LCD with pronounced bezels all the way around.

Display resolution clocks in at 2,400 by 1,080 with a 393ppi pixel density. The display is bright and crisp; colors skew slightly warm. Viewing angles are decent, but you'll definitely lose some clarity if you're not looking at the display head on. The biggest issue, however, is the very noticeable shadow beneath the camera cutout. Head on, you'll only notice a slight shadow, but if you look at the phone at any other angle, it becomes very pronounced.

The back of the K92 5G is constructed of a glossy purple plastic. It looks sharp at first but picks up fingerprints and scratches very easily. Though other midrange phones like the Pixel 4a use plastic backplates, they still feel substantial. The K92 5G, on the other, hand, feels a little flimsy. If you tap its back, you'll be greeted with a hollow thud.

There's a thick horizontal stripe for the camera module and flash on the back of the phone. Everything, with the exception of the primary lens, sits flush against the phone and looks very sleek.

The speaker grille, USB-C charging port, and headphone jack sit on the bottom of the bottom of the phone. The top is home to a SIM/microSD slot. On the left you'll find the Google Assistant and volume buttons. The buttons are thin and fairly flush with the phone, and if you have small hands they can be difficult to reach.

There's a power button on the right side of the phone that also houses the fingerprint sensor. It's accurate but a little slow. When you tap your finger to unlock, the screen goes dark for about a second, leaving you to wonder whether your fingerprint registered at all.

Though plastic backplates tend to withstand drops and dings better than their glass counterparts, it feels like there's very little additional support behind the K92 5G's backplate. When we've noticed this in the past, most often on entry-level phones, we've found them to be much more prone to cracks.

There's also no IP rating on the phone, meaning any accidental immersion in water is likely going to mean its demise. And then there's the issue of the display. LG doesn't state that the K92 5G uses any sort of strengthened glass for its display, and we reached out to the company and did not receive a reply. After some digging, it appears the display is made of traditional sodium glass, which will not weather drops well at all. If you're planning to make the K92 5G your next daily-use phone, you'll definitely want to pick up a sturdy case.

Half the 5G Goodness

When it comes to connectivity, the K92 5G is a bit of a strange bird. It's a carrier exclusive for AT&T and Cricket Wireless that is optimized for that network, and it is a 5G phone, but it will never work on AT&T's ultra-fast mmWave network because it only has a sub-6GHz modem. That said, AT&T has played down the importance of its mmWave network, to the point of never releasing a map of the areas it covers.

Overall connectivity is poor, but that's due more to AT&T's network and software requirements than to the K92 5G's hardware. We tested the phone on AT&T's 5G network in Memphis and recorded average speeds of 28.4Mbps down and 3.81Mbps up. On a less congested network in Arkansas, average speeds increased to 45.2Mbps down and 4.67Mbps up. I suspect LTE network speeds would be much better, but AT&T disables the option to turn off 5G connectivity on its phones, so there's no way for us to verify it or for a user to take advantage of it.

We found call quality to be adequate during our test calls. Maximum earpiece volume clocks in at 88dB, which is loud enough to use in just about any scenario. We noticed some static at higher volumes during half of our test calls. Noise cancellation, however, worked perfectly on every call.

Audio quality is disappointing. Though the K92 5G boasts stereo speakers, the top and bottom speakers are unbalanced; in our tests, the bottom speaker maxed out at 101dB compared with just 81dB for the top speaker. In general, audio is forward and harsh, creating significant congestion. Fortunately, there's a headphone jack on board for wired audio.

The K92 5G supports dual-band Wi-Fi, as well as Bluetooth 5.1. NFC is also onboard for mobile payments and boarding passes.

Sluggish Performer

With the exception of the recently released OnePlus Nord N10 5G, the LG K92 is the only 5G smartphone in the US that uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 690 processor. It's a step down from the 700-series processors that have become common on midrange 5G phones such as the Google Pixel 4a, the Revvl 5G UW, and the TCL 10 5G UW. There's 6GB of RAM as well as 128GB of storage, of which just 95GB is available when you open the box. You can add storage with a microSD card.

In theory, the K92's Snapdragon 690 chipset should be powerful enough to hold its own for the average user, but we found it limped along in our tests. Apps took a little longer than expected to open, screen transitions lagged, and, on more than one occasion, the phone briefly froze up when we opened apps.

Gaming is a miss as well. We tested the K92 5G with Alto's Odyssey and Asphalt 8: Airborne for nearly two hours and noticed long load times and intermittent skipped frames. The phone froze entirely at one point while playing Asphalt 8, forcing us to reboot it.

Benchmark tests yielded interesting results. On Geekbench 5, a suite of tests that measures raw computing power, the K92 5G earned 602 single-core (SC) and 1,734 multi-core (MC) scores. That's on par with the OnePlus Nord N10 (578 SC/1,846MC) and even the more powerful TCL 10 5G UW (618 SC/1,911MC).

Of course, Geekbench results only tells part of the story. On PCMark 2.0 and Basemark Web, benchmark suites that use real-world applications, the K92 5G lagged behind on tasks like video editing and web browsing. Add in a GFXBench Car Chase Offscreen score of 14fps versus the average score of 21fps we've seen on Snapdragon 765 chipsets, it starts to look like the phone's underwhelming GPU may be at least partially to blame for some of the lag we experienced.

A 4,000mAh battery powers the K92 5G. Despite the phone's energy-efficient processor, its battery is anemic for a phone with a 6.7-inch display. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the K92 5G eked out just 8 hours and 7 minutes before shutting down. What's more, we found that the battery depleted quickly even when it wasn't being used; during our week of testing, the battery drained an average of 17 percent overnight.

If you do find yourself veering into the red by the end of the day, the K92 5G supports fast charging with Quick Charge 4.0. That means you can easily gain a few hours of battery life in about five minutes, or add 80% charge to your depleted battery in about an hour. Wireless charging, however, is not an option.

Cameras That (Mostly) Shine in Good Light

On the back of the K92 5G, you'll find a quad camera stack with a 64MP primary lens with an f/1.8 aperture, a 5MP ultra-wide sense with an f/2.2 aperture, and 2MP depth and macro sensors. A 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture sits on the front of the phone.

Let's start with the 64MP primary lens. In good light, it does a surprisingly solid job. Our test shots were crisp with excellent background detail and depth of field. In low light, there was some loss of fine detail, and we noticed overly aggressive noise cancellation in a few test shots, but overall, the K92 5G does well for a midrange phone.

The 5MP ultra-wide lens did a pretty decent job in good light. There was no complex distortion like we often see on midrange wide-angle lenses. However, there was a noticeable loss of fine detail in most of our shots. Low-light photos, on the other hand, featured noticeable edge noise. There were some unexplained halos in a few shots that may have been caused by natural phenomena.

The K92 5G's macro lens, like most we've tested, fails to stand out. Nearly all our test shots appeared flat and had significant detail loss in the foreground.

The 16MP front-facing camera does an excellent job in good light. All of our test photos were crisp with excellent depth of field. In low light, however, the selfie cam struggles. Our test shots looked flat and noise started to creep in around the edges.

LG offers several different Portrait mode options on the K92 5G. Thanks to the 5MP depth sensor, all work well on the rear camera. For our test shots, we used the Blur setting. All of our test shots had a natural-looking bokeh with accurate subject mapping.

Portraits with the selfie cam are a bit more hit or miss. We found issues with subject mapping around shoulders and hats in nearly every shot. In photos where the subject and background were the same color, we noticed areas where the bokeh effect simply didn't work.

Android 10 With Dozens of Unwelcome Extras

The K92 5G ships features Android 10 with LG's custom UI. Over the past few years, LG's skin has become more user-friendly, but it's still a pretty heavy-handed take on Android. Icons have a unique look, the Settings menu is organized a little differently, and even the Search bar is not the same as you'll find on stock Android. It's not a bad thing, necessarily, but if you're not used to LG devices, it takes a while to get your bearings.

Unfortunately, the K92 is filled with nearly two dozen bloatware applications, including shopping apps, games, and AT&T and LG's branded apps. It's excessive and completely inexcusable for an unsubsidized phone to ship with nearly 15GB of apps you didn't request.

It's not clear whether the K92 5G will get an upgrade to Android 11. If it does, expect to see it in the distant future, since it will need to be pushed through the carrier. We've reached out to LG inquire about future software upgrades but have yet to hear back.

Simply Not a Contender

The LG K92 5G sounds like a solid smartphone on paper, but we found it to be a weak competitor when compared to the Google Pixel 4a and TCL 10 5G UW. Given the quality concerns, poor battery life, and underwhelming performance—not to mention its mediocre display—it's hard for us to find any outstanding features that makes the K92 5G worth consideration. AT&T customers looking for a 5G phone will find the Pixel 4a 5G a far superior option.
