RULES

01. Hello! My name is Crys (she/they) and I am a 25+ year-old adult with over 10 years of experience in Tumblr RPC. I love to write, however, I do work a full-time job with many responsibilities so I can sometimes be slow with activity. My number 1 and most important rule is respect. for myself and others. Absolutely no harassment for replies or any general hatred/bigotry of any kind will be tolerated on this blog.

02. I will not under any circumstances follow or write with someone under 18. My blog is private, meaning I will typically only reply or thread with mutuals. I am selective in whom I follow, but please give me a few days to follow back depending on my activity level. I don't always check every blog every day so it may take me a bit to follow back, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested.

03. Do not feel obligated to match length perfectly with every reply. The length of my writing will vary anywhere from a paragraph to novella, depending on content, muse, or time. I care much more about effort than I care about matching my length exactly.

04. Piggy-backing off the previous rule, I am also not a stickler for formatting either. I have a general aesthetic I like to maintain for my blog, but am very open to writing with partners no matter the type of formatting they use. That being said, if you write in larger text, I will likely edit it to small text when replying to a thread. At this time, I am still up in the air about whether or not I will be using icons (they may come later.)

05. I am open to writing with any other Star Wars characters or OCs. At this time, I have a strong preference for in-universe settings, but I am not opposed to any modern-AUs and can typically be sold on any idea.

06. This is a multi-ship blog and I am always open to shipping in threads. I do ask that shipping develops naturally unless it’s pre-established to be a shipping thread. If you want to ship, just reach out! This blog will sometimes contain NSFW content in shipping threads, but it will always be tagged accordingly for smut. I will also typically reach out to shipping partners before a thread escalates in that direction (not including smutty meme asks.)

07. If we are mutuals, please always feel free to send me meme asks or a request for plotting! I will never get annoyed by these things and I love getting to write with people, even if I can be a bit slow activity. My direct messages are always open.

08. Life gets busy and mental health is important. Please don’t ever get offended if I drop a thread, most of the time it is never personal and entirely on me. It does not mean I won’t want to write to you at a later time.

09. My Discord handle is available to mutuals on request! I love meeting people and making friends. I am open to plotting and writing over Discord as well, please never hesitate to ask!

I would love some more mean advice, I'm taking notes because this is a goldmine

lol honestly, the advice about not starting a fic with Life Story Infodump or Daily Grind Infodump is the most important thing I can think of. Since nearly all of the times I back out of a fic, it’s because of one of those two things.  Just about everything else I can think of is pretty minor and won’t make me quit reading.  But here’s a few things I think might be helpful just for giving a story some extra shine.

1. Minute detail of a process is rarely necessary.  Gloss over how something works unless the details have something to do with plot. For instance, if Dean is making tacos for dinner, just say Dean gets to work preparing tacos. Don’t talk about warming up the shells, or browning the meat, or slicing the veggies.  Unless it’s plot related. If Dean makes checklists and crosses things off to soothe anxiety, then those details are important, but make it clear that he’s self-soothing.  Or if Cas is allergic to onions, bring up that Dean sauteed them and added them to the meat, because Dean LOVES onions, and it didn’t occur to him to check if Cas has allergies before he started cooking, and they can’t be picked out, and oops the date ends with Dean rushing Cas to the ER, etc.  Otherwise, just say Dean had an hour left till Cas showed up for dinner, so he hurried to prepare all the taco fixings, and it took too little time so now he had to figure out how to occupy himself till the doorbell rang.

(btw, I would LOVE more first date ending up in the ER stories, everyone who reads this is free to adopt that idea lol)

2. Please don’t write an entire story in 1-2 sentence paragraphs.  This is rare, but it’s an almost instant nope out for me.  There’s this one story that I reeeeeally want to read, because it’s right up my alley, and other than the short paragraph issue, it’s well written so I keep trying but getting stuck.  I’m gonna have to copy it into a doc and edit the paragraphs and squish some stuff together to make it legible to my brain.  Like there’s a long stretch in the first chapter where every sentence is its own paragraph, and just.... why.  When you’re putting a paragraph break, there’s a mental pause happening in the reader’s mind.  And too many short paragraphs in a row makes it more like a really long poem rather than a typical story you’d read in a book.  A lot of advice says to not attack your readers with a wall of text (WALL OF TEXT CRITS YOU FOR OVER 9000!!!) and to break things up, but the opposite is also true.  Too many super short paragraphs is like Damage Over Time (THROW MORE DOTS, MORE DOTS!) and either one of those will defeat your reader’s interest.  Short paragraphs are a very useful tool, I use them myself for emphasis, but it can’t be your whole story.  Try to limit it to no more than 3 in a row.  If you’re going past that, take a minute to read those sentences and see if they’re related to each other.  Squish them into a single paragraph if they are.  Varying your paragraph length IS an art form.  Like writing music.  Paragraphs build a cadence, and staccato cannot sustain a whole song.  This can be mitigated by creating long compound sentences though, so keep in mind that the length of the sentence, which should vary, can make a paragraph feel longer, even if it is only 1 or 2 sentences.

(haha she gives advice on how to break up paragraphs while critting you with a wall of text!  good job, Carebear.)

3. The art of breaking up dialogue is just as delicate as the art of paragraph construction.  Too much back and forth without breaking it up with an action or an internal thought can make it confusing who is talking.  The rule of 3 comes in handy here too.  After 3 back and forths, put in something non-dialogue.  So it would go Character A says thing, Character B says Thing, Character A says thing, add some action/internal thoughts.  And just a he/she/they said tag isn’t enough.  IT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING, and depending on the cadence of the conversation it’s the right tool.  But adding some physical movement or a stray thought would be better.  That being said, don’t put too much action/thought between sections of dialogue.  If you put too much info in there, it can make your reader forget that there’s even a conversation going on, and they’ll get to the next piece of dialogue and be like wtf is this pertaining to again? and they’ll have to scroll back to the last line of dialogue to remember what was last said.  Remember, thoughts fly at the speed of light, so if you’re pausing the dialogue for some internal character thought, it’s happening in a matter of seconds, but your reader needs minutes to read and parse what’s going on.  Again, rule of 3, try not to do more than 3 paragraphs between dialogues.  And if you’re still not sure, or you feel like you need more so you keep going, read out loud from the last dialogue through the next dialogue and it’ll give you an idea of just how much time is physically passing for your readers, and you’ll start to feel the true size of things.

(WRITE ALL THAT STUFF DOWN THO.  If you need to get it out, then by all means, get it out.  It’s your first draft, and it’s important for YOU, even if a lot of it isn’t important for the reader.  Trim it in the edit. FOR THE LOVE OF THE GODS, TRIM IT IN THE EDIT.)

(And the rule of 3 is a guideline, not a rule.  It’s just a good measuring tool that you can use until you’re comfortable enough to eyeball things on your own.)

Anyway, those are the only things that come to mind while I’m calm and not in a frothing rage over writing errors that are not mine to correct.  I feel like a huge asshole for vague-bitching about other people’s writing, and I profusely apologize for anyone’s hurt feelings if they read this advice and realize this might apply to something they’ve done.  PLEASE KEEP WRITING, DON’T LET MY WHINGING DISCOURAGE YOU, I LOVE YOU.

I have a full-time job (and I’m trying to get into screenwriting in my off-time) so sometimes I’m scrapped for time or exhausted. I’m also an introvert who deals with anxiety and depression, thus that may affect how much / how often I roleplay. If I don’t get chance to respond to anything ic or ooc, it’s nothing personal! Chances are, I’ve probably has seen that bit of interactivity and just haven’t gotten around to responding yet.

My roleplaying style being para/multi-para, I may take a while to respond. I hoard drafts like a dragon - it’s really just the motivation to write and ship those out.

Short responses (such as one-liners) in more serious threads where I’ve written a decent deal can instantly kill my muse for that thread.

If my muse happen to go nuts out of nowhere - like, overboard - don’t stress too much about matching him.

Hello! Welcome to my ad! I apologize ahead of time if it’s very lengthy and boring, I just like to cover any base I can ahead of time to avoid future conflicts or misunderstandings. Let’s go ahead and get introductions out of the way, shall we?

  For starters, I go by Arturia online, but call me whatever. Nicknames are cool and we’re all here to have a good time with writing, so I’m not too picky with much. I’m about to turn 20 years old and I prefer she/her pronouns. I live in the Central Timezone, though am often up at odd hours. The summer is here and so I should have a fair bit of freetime for writing, plus I’ve been craving more partners to rp with, so here I am! Let me detail a bit about my basic requirements/info for rp and then I can tell you about my cravings for rp currently!

  RP Basics:

I will rp any pairing, but prefer to play as a female in either FxF or MxF pairings. Do not come to me to be simply a male in either a MxF or MxM pairing, I will drop it. If I am playing a male, I generally prefer to double.

Smut: I will write it, but occasionally prefer to fade-to-black. Needless to say, you must be 18+ to contact me for an rp. Not only for the potential for smut, but also because of the potential for darker themes to be involved. Also, I do not want a smut-centered rp, sorry. And the characters in the rp have to be of age if we’re writing smut for them. I get there’s trauma and stuff in their backstories, but I will not write that stuff for underage characters whatsoever.

OOC Chat. I love it, but will not force it. If you’re somebody who wants to be all business, that’s totally fine! Just let me know! Same goes if you wanna chitchat 24/7 and send memes back and forth, just let me know how you wanna handle this! New friends or business partners who only discuss the rp, I don’t mind either way!

Triggers/Limits: I don’t have many myself, aside from the general consensus with smut (No to anything illegal or anything with bathroom stuff, sorry but not really sorry y’all.) If you have any triggers or limits, both in regular rp and smut, let me know please!! I do not want to accidentally upset somebody, so let me know ahead of time!!

Replies. I can’t guarantee a set schedule for my replies, just due to life stuff. I will try to get one out daily, if not every other day, and will let you know if something comes up. I expect some sort of notice from you and will message you again after a week to check in unless told ahead of time otherwise. 

Writing Style. I write in Third-Person and expect you to do the same, sorry but 1st really doesn’t work for me and I cannot write 3rd against your 1st. In terms of length, that varies depending on my partner’s preferred length and the contents of the rp, but I generally shoot for at least a few paragraphs. I expect at least a few from you as well, just to give me something to work with. No one-liners or close to that, please.

Rp Method. Email or Discord. Either of those two work and are what I prefer to use. I won’t use anything else. Maybe Google Docs, but don’t rely on that. I’ll leave my contact info at the bottom of this ad!

Post-Apocalyptic: Literally craving this so bad. I want to explore a variety of scenarios that could cause an apocalypse. Maybe it starts out with zombies but turns out to be some mad scientist government figure experimenting on people and trying to take over the world to build his own world??? 

Fantasy: Anything and everything, I’m a sucker for it. Typically go for medieval fantasy, but literally shoot me your ideas. We can work on them together!

Sci-Fi: This goes sort of in hand with fantasy, but I would like to work on some sort of space pirates plot, with our characters going around saving planets and running away from various law officials.

Really, the only original genre that would be a bit difficult for me is slice-of-life. We would have to work on that and really work to keep it interesting, I don’t want to write the daily life of college students, in all honesty, I need something to keep it interesting.

How I Write Class Notes

First of all, I totally forgot that I said I’d do this and I’m really sorry about that.

So my note taking is specifically designed for upper-level math classes since that’s what I do the most but my notes for CS and many other classes still take a similar form, just with less things labeled theorems (also with more bulleted lists. I love bulleted lists but I use them way less in math notes than any other class). This also works for reading textbooks or papers independently. If you want info specifically for lower level math classes (high school up through calc 3), I can see what I can do too.

Here’s a very basic summary of what I think is most important for note taking

Feasible (ie simple and fast enough for you). You want to be able to keep up your system even at points where your class is going absurdly fast or when you’re exhausted/having trouble focusing/etc

Easy to skim. Just writing things down at all is good for retention but if you’re taking notes, you probably want to be able to read them later easily. So it needs to be easy to pick out key definitions/theorems/etc.

In that vein, include necessary assumptions even if it does feel repetitive.

Don’t cram things together. Allow for white space (again, so skimming is possible)

Label things. Major topics, definitions, theorems, key ideas especially. Also make it obvious that a proof or example is a proof/example.

All of it is together one way or another, whether that’s a digital file, paper in a folder/binder/etc, or a notebook. Keeping it together is extremely important to me.

I’m very basic about my notes and am not always fully consistent (I have an indentation problem which occasionally irritates me but I’ve decided it’s not worth it to obsess over), but I try to be and generally have a structure for my notes. If you were to flip through even my recent notebooks you’ll find deviations but that’s just how it goes.

I don’t actually have any of my old class notes with me right now so I wrote the following to give a sense of what my notes tend to actually look like. I wrote it on loose leaf but normally I take notes in a composite notebook. I find I consistently take 30-45 pages (1 page = front and back) per class per semester (I’ve also taken less) so I find the halfway point and do two classes per notebook to decrease number of notebooks I’m carrying around. If you have two semester long classes, account for that so that you don’t end up having alg I and II in different notebooks like I do.

(I typed more or less what I wrote afterwards but there’s really no way I’m recreating the formatting on a tumblr post)

First of all, this is a fair bit neater than my actual notes are. One of my best friends can barely read my normal handwriting at all and this is a bit neater than that. But if you can’t read it still, I don’t blame you at all so,

Date goes in the top right column at the beginning of every single class. It helps when you’re flipping through to find something later and also forces me to be somewhat aware of the date from day to day (further discussion on dates later)

I underline chapter/section titles/topics and include the the relevant textbook section numbers if given. This varies according to how my professors introduce topics generally.

Also I will generally just skip two or three lines between sections but will start at the top of a new page for chapters.

Some of my professors start off topics by giving an overview of what we’re looking at and motivations and the like so I just write “Idea:” and follow it up with whatever the professor is giving me.

Definitions: Typical in most subjects, I shorten it to “def” on the left of the margin line and start writing on the same line

I used to like starting out with the word itself but I often find it awkward in math notes so I just underline it in the statement (and highlight later)

Even though it’s a pain, I make a point of restating assumptions pretty constantly because it’s really useful if you’re studying from notes later.

Some typical things to follow up definitions include notation, warnings, and sometimes an intuitive way of thinking about it that may not completely capture all the details of the statement. I just do “thing:” for everything except the later, which I just write in quotes

Don’t forget, definitions are always if and only if statements. This is something you’re generally vaguely aware of from early on but perhaps don’t actually fully realize until some random point (I did that and heard of several others doing it too)

Theorems: The other mainstay of math. Honestly, I’m pretty sure everything’s ultimately a theorem, definition, axiom, or example

I give theorems a label of “THM” on the left. I can’t really explain why I write it in capital letters here but if I write theorem within a statement or example or something, I’ll use a lowercase “thm”

Like for definitions, make a point of rewriting assumptions.

Just overall, I try to keep my “paragraphs” short, one to three lines, before leaving the rest of the line blank and indenting the next one in order to increase whitespace

Lemmas/Corollaries/Other words which exist: I tend to put their label on the right side of the red margin line and indent their content more. I’m not super consistent with them, though make sure to indicate end of lemmas if your theorem goes “theorem - start proof - lemma - proof of lemma - finish proof of theorem”

If a diagram is useful, I tend to stick them to the right and write around it best I can. I’ll generally wait until after class to add color if it’s useful but occasionally, if class is going relatively slow or the colors REALLY matter then I’ll grab colored pens as quickly as possible

Also, my professors tend to not shy away from longer proofs and are not always the best of keeping track of time so that means we end class in the middle of proofs more often than ideal

I will just continue right along with the proof but shove the date at the right of the first line on the next day.

When we end at more reasonable places, I tend to skip a line, date on the right, resume on the next line

Unless I end within the last 8ish lines, then I’ll often start on the next page

Some things to consider that I didn’t write in the example:

I converted to writing in pen at the beginning of the summer (I’ve had a few lectures at the beginning of my REU but it’s not quite the same as class). Don’t be worried about scribbling out if you’re using pen. If you want prettier notes, rewrite them later. It’s a good way of studying anyways.

Also consider typing them up (tex for math) to have a searchable reference for later (studying/future classes).

I write up definitions and theorems before exams in colorful pen to study. Usually just on copy paper. The color is mostly just for fun since i’m probably stressed at the time.

I feel like a lot of math students do use pen exclusviely? idk. Use whatever you feel most comfortable with. When I used pencil, I did a combo of erasing and scribbling out, depending on the pace of the class.

If you are in the market for pens, G2 pens seem to have a bit of a following and honestly, I get it. They’re really good and within typical prices for disposable pens (you can order refills online and it makes them even cheaper). I also love papermate’s felt tips (they’re what I use for colored pens) but you can see them from the other side of the paper far more so I don’t find them appropriate for note taking.

Don’t be afraid to write notes in the margins (I usually use the left margin at an angle but like, wherever it fits works too). Often these are comments to myself.

Having a way to indicate things you want to look up later or exercises your professor suggested is good. I usually put a star on the red margin line at those points.

I try to keep a def/thm/proof on the same page but it’s really hard to always anticipate the length of things so I try but don’t worry about it too much.

Use shortenings when you can but make sure you remember them and that you’re not actually spending more time recalling the abbreviation than you would just writing it out

I find the most common abbreviations in math are first three letter of the word, first four letters, or first three and last letter

I don’t think flat out trying to use someone else’s note taking system is really the best. You’ll have to take more time than you probably have to remember the formatting. However, getting ideas from others is often useful. I don’t know why I started doing most things I do but I know that some of my habits came from seeing my friends or professors do it.

I think I mostly just use typical organization methods and nothing particularly interesting/novel but I hope it was still useful to some people.

If it’s a crossover, I have to know the fandom and be at least a little bit confident with it. This is so I’m able to work with you, our thread and have muse for it.

In that sense, I’m chill with dash shenanigans with most folk, not just mutuals!

Absolutely no godmodding. It ain’t fun, fam. If you’re not sure what this term means, do look it up. This includes powerplaying, metagaming, and other things of that nature. This applies especially in fights if they happen (I’m chance-based and hope that you are too). 

Given Bill’s canonical powers and presence in Gravity Falls, I know he’s kind of. OP. I am, however, open to discussing this sort of thing with you and how much he might know about your muse.

3. Please don’t rush me for starters or responses.

PLEASE understand that I have blogs galore and my muse tends to fluctuate; this can mean I’m everywhere at once and can end up neglecting a blog or two. It’s nothing personal; you know how muses are!

I have a full-time job (and I’m trying to get into screenwriting in my off-time) so sometimes I’m scrapped for time or exhausted. I’m also an introvert who deals with anxiety and depression, thus that may affect how much / how often I roleplay. If I don’t get chance to respond to anything ic or ooc, it’s nothing personal! Chances are, I’ve probably has seen that bit of interactivity and just haven’t gotten around to responding yet.

My roleplaying style being para/multi-para, I may take a while to respond. I hoard drafts like a dragon - it’s really just the motivation to write and ship those out.

I hoard asks, but sometimes can’t find muse or interest for all of them. If it’s been a month or two, generally assume I’m not interested / can’t find muse for it. You’re free to send another though!

4. Shippings? Not really looking for romantic ships, tbh. Anything else is gucci though.

7. I’m a para / multi-para blog, novella if I’m adventurous and have time. Whilst I may roleplay crack threads with shorter responses, this does not apply to all threads I write. This means:

I write my replies as detailed as I can muster, and length can range from 1 paragraph to 6.

Short responses (such as one-liners) in more serious threads where I’ve written a decent deal can instantly kill my muse for that thread.

Whilst I’d prefer for partners to at least somewhat match my length, it’s entirely up to you - just try your best and make sure you give me enough to work with. ♡

If my muse happen to go nuts out of nowhere - like, overboard - don’t stress too much about matching him.

8. Threads! You can yeet asks, memes, and even starters at me if I’ve liked a call! I’ll obviously have my own you can like.

You’re free to like starter calls even if we’re not mutuals; I can check out your blog that way. I still only write starters for mutuals though.

Starter memes are the BEST way to interact me because they just yeet a prompt at my face and really help me write starters. If you see me reblog one, send one!

I don’t recommend writing starters for me unless we’ve discussed something. I don’t like to leave anyone hanging.

Tag their nsfw.

Don’t have massive icons - ie, have rp icons that take up an entire text post like 500x500 or something. I don’t want to clog the dash and it’s tiring to resize them.

…also, if I follow your hub blog (provided it doesn’t double as a personal), it generally means I’m cool with any blogs that are attached to it.

12. On threads…

If you’re not interested in a thread anymore, and would like to drop it, please let me know! I’d feel terrible if we’re both not having fun with it or if partners feel overwhelmed with the amount of threads we have.

Honestly, unless I let you know, our threads have no expiry date - so no need to worry about me dropping them without telling you. I can just be quite slow sometimes.

11. Mun does not equal muse! Anything my character might say does not reflect on how I think unless I explicitly say so.

So, speaking hypothetically. I'll start with the basic premise. Being competent at something means, to a degree, that it's possible that someone trusts in that competence. Whether that trust is or isn't built on nothing is immaterial — the concept of being trusted in itself leads to pressure. Like peer pressure, or expectations. So I'll say that being competent is a state of being that requires maintenance. (space alien, 2/?)

What if I was trusted to do something, but I was incapable of delivering? Would not one possible solution to prevent, or lower the likelihood of that happening be to never gain competence, and thus, never be put in a position where my expertise would be tested, only for me to fail? 1s may consider the evil of doing others harm: if gaining competence meant becoming good at hurting other people, would it not be good for them to mitigate the issue in some way? Put in a position of power thanks to their competence, they may be at risk of developing an ego. Feeling correct in their views they may act with arrogance and cut down their opposition. In other words, they fear the corruptive influence of power gained through the path of competence. (space alien, 5/?)

2s might seek not to become competent because they want to be helpful; in a situation where they perceive their incompetence as beneficial they might well seek to remain an individual who's helpless. (space alien, 6/?)

4s might well come to the conclusion that skills they aren't born with— those latent, natural talents— are inauthentic because they don't arise naturally. An individual who has the philosophy that what they're born with is all they have, and that working to gain more means that they're acting against their nature. (space alien, 7/?)

7s might want to escape from a situation where they are forced to maintain the status quo — if competence in a field meant they had to become a maintainer of said status quo, and their responsibilities prevented them from experiencing new things, would they not want to avoid it? (space alien, 8/8)

This got really academic-sounding because I tend to slip into that habit when I write an essay addressing an argument so in short: I think the fear you described is a fear of responsibility, but you’ve made an assumption (which I disagree with) that responsibility occurs if and only if the person is first competent. With that in mind the most likely enneatype is 7, though 9 is also possible.

Long answer:

This was extremely helpful in that it revealed the fear is not competence, but rather a collection of possible hypothetical implications thereof. Much of this was dependent on competence leading to extremely specific and not necessarily likely outcomes; additionally a lot of the arguments here don’t logically follow and as a result obscure the core fears, and a few rely on incorrect enneagram descriptions.

In part 2-3 the fear described is not of being competent, but the pressure of having responsibility and therefore having to living up to expectations the possibility failure. We also run into the core fallacy of the initial ask which is that responsibility is a certain consequence of competence, which for better or for worse is not true.

The rest is a specific exploration of certain enneatypes, addressed here:

It is true that a 1 would not want to become good at being evil, but that is a hyper-specific situation, and the fear is still “I don’t want to be corrupt”, not “I don’t want to be good at anything”. By this logic, wouldn’t they want to become highly competent at doing good instead?

It also relies on many, many assumptions - that competence always leads to power, that power always leads to arrogance, that arrogance would lead to cutting down the opposition, and that doing so is bad (what if the opposition is evil?).

A lot of average health 1s really want power because there’s often this undercurrent of belief that only they know how to do things the correct way. Additionally, 1 is highly correlated with high Te which tends to strongly value being capable. I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of 1s if anything fear being incompetent.

For 2s...how would being helpless ever be more helpful? By definition, helpless means you are incapable of providing help to yourself and others, and 2s want to be loved by others typically through being helpful.

For 4s, while I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that on this earth there is a person who is a type 4 and holds this belief, I would not ascribe this belief to be a major characteristic of 4s as a whole. If you’re trying to type a specific person with this fear then it would be a simple matter of confirming if they do have this highly specific philosophy as well, but in general 4s seek to distinguish themselves. Additionally, it is important to remember that 4s seek to be unique, not authentic necessarily. Authenticity is more tied to Fi than 4. 4s often try on multiple personas in an effort to be someone unique.

For 7s, that again is making the assumption that competence leads to something. In fact, the description for 7 is a good way to address the core problem of this argument in general which is that becoming competent in something is seen as, first of all, a binary, when it’s a range (many people can have a skill at varying degrees) and second, that upon achieving competence you are suddenly both saddled with responsibility and deprived of agency. So, I typically write for three different formats, each with its own approach but with some commonalities.

#1: Tumblr posts

Answering Tumblr asks first and foremost always starts with the good intentions to actually delve into the ask backlog. In reality, this almost never happens and I default to the first page in my inbox. It’s not technically writing but choosing asks is key to this whole process. I love ones I can answer in a sentence (or image) or two but many involve taking the time to research or fact-check. I like those too, but if they require too much of an involved effort they are more likely to go unanswered, as I only have so much time. Lately I’ve only been able to do Tumblr stuff after 11PM EST. Though I want to put much of the blame on Tumblr itself because if there was a way to tag or favorite certain asks for later (and save drafts of ask replies), I’d get a lot more done. But hey, it’s a site made mostly for sharing images, so what can you expect?

Ask frequency varies but since this is perceived as a Shin Megami Tensei blog, activity naturally increases around the time of new SMT releases, where I can get 10 or so asks a day, especially if I’m active that particular day. Since we’re in the middle of an SMT drought, activity has really dried up. I still try to answer an average of three per day.

As for my actual writing and style, I personally perceive myself as a slow writer. I believe this is so because in real life I tend towards being a perfectionist with most things I do. I proofread an average length post of 2-3 paragraphs at least three or four times. One of those average length posts will take me about 20-30 minutes to write, more if there are images involved.

Another self-perception is a preference for direct language and communication. That’s why I was surprised you called my writing “eloquent,” as I like to be straightforward and succinct, workmanlike. That said, I also am sometimes frustrated that my English lexicon isn’t grander than it is, so I often use a thesaurus to brush up. But it’s never about interjecting superfluous flair or purple prose but instead the right word that could stand in for three or four others and create better sentence flow.

#2 Long-form articles

Many of the articles I’ve written grew naturally out of Tumblr posts and asks to lengths that would be inappropriate for the Tumblr format, compounded with the problem of Tumblr’s limited (read: single option) image formatting.

When I start work on long articles, I usually go analog and write outlines and other notes in a notebook. Being away from a screen and listening to music helps stimulate my brain. Music is especially important but mostly for #3, below.

After jotting down what I plan to achieve, I often jump right in to Word or Google Docs and start writing the real text for whatever my head wants to spill at that particular moment. However, I burn out quickly here because, more often than not, I like to have properly cited sources to back up my claims and, like the Tumblr asks, researching can take a while! It’s not just about finding sources and pasting in the right quotes but understanding their context and ensuring they are used appropriately in support of an argument. It’s like every college paper I ever did, only I’ve actually cared about these!

Revision is key, as is being willing to trim dead branches. For example, from initial concept to publication, it took me around 10 months to finish all three parts of SMT’s Identity Crisis. Within about three months I had an article that was about 70% "finished,” but it was meandering and amateurish. It had a clear thesis but an inconsistent voice. It was difficult to do but I wrote a new draft that cut out much I previously thought important. It was the right call, the new draft, the current text, was clearer and better delineated. Subsequent articles have logically taken less time to write as I’ve gained experience with the format, all but the Odin one this past summer; it took me almost a year after I kept piling on new ideas, observations, and the silly notion to simultaneously reveal a website and a long-secret project.

All the same vocab and proofreading rules from #1 still apply, though scaled appropriately. I must have read the finalized Identity Crisis a few dozen times before it was published--and I still found typos much later, to my chagrin!

We’re all influenced by the media we consume and I’m no different. For me this most plainly manifests through music, historically mostly video game soundtracks. In the past I would listen separately to soundtracks from games I already knew front and back to absorb the tone and mood of the music, which I’d then turn into various ideas (still mostly in notebooks, though that’s changing). For the longest time I thought listening to instrumental music was the key to promoting pure, imaginative ideas, but since Wisdom Eternal: 1973 is technically a period piece I’ve been listening to classic rock and having just as much luck inspiring the old noggin. It also helps that ‘70s rock influenced most of the game music I like!

The previous point made me realize something: when I criticize modern SMT, for example, I’ve also been unconsciously making the statement “I don’t want this to influence me.” Though, ironically, acknowledging those flaws has been hugely influential on how NOT to approach certain things. “We are what we eat,” and that equally applies to consumed media. Some of my older creative works that I now deem to be bad were the result of a limited pool of influences, mostly JRPGs. Very much akin to light novel-caliber writing and concepts, which are often similarly criticized for their extremely narrow range of influences too often focused on literal conflict and not empathetic, realistic characterization.

This post has been going on for a while, but one last thing I’ll say about my creative writing is just how slow the process can be. It’s slower than writing a research-heavy article, just because the idea or two you need to link certain plot threads can’t always be forced out of your brain. In my case, namely the subject of mythology and religion in a narrative, it’s not just writer’s block, it’s about being well-read enough to know (Y) about a particular culture in order to solve (X) narrative problem. Ya gotta read and you gotta read the right stuff, though what the right stuff is will of course vary depending on your own goals.

This was a fun ask that took me just over 2 hours to write, so I hope it’s helpful for you! Honestly, I could have said more but enough’s enough.
