Clinical Trial: A Review

So I just finished a little game called Clinical Trial. It's a free visual novel RPG maker game that you can find on Itch.io. Here's a download link.

Before I get into how I feel about this game however I must warn you that it contains themes and images of violent pixelated gore and sexual assault. If you cannot handle these things I would not play this game and I would not read this review. There will also be many spoilers. Reader discretion is advised.

Now, unto the actual review...

Where the hell do I begin with a game like Clinical Trial? I'll just tell you what happens.

The game begins with a character named Angel, this character's gender is never specified in the story but from what I could gather they seem to be nonbinary. Due to not knowing the exact gender or preferred pronouns of Angel, I will simply be using they/them for them. If this is somehow wrong and I am informed later, I will change it or leave some kind of notice above the cut on this post.

Initially the game is set up like a slow burn love story between Angel and a nurse working at the clinic named Lee. Lee is initially a pretty stoned face, taller man seemingly in his early to mid 20s. He works at the clinic as a nurse, running the trial with a variety of patients to test the effects of a new drug that is meant to aid people with ADHD in their day to day lives.

Angel has signed up for this trial, not out of any desire to cure their suspected ADHD, but for the $1000 compensation that the flier for the trial promised. Lee understands this and for the first hour or so of the game, things are fairly normal. You play as Angel, you go in, go through the steps of getting blood drawn and injected with the drug.

This back and forth goes on for about 8 weeks in game, with Angel visiting the clinic for the trial for a total of 8 weeks. As the weeks progress, Angel and Lee seem to get closer and closer, and Angel opens up more about their personal life. After showing up to the trial particularly haggard and in a dissociative state, Lee decides to take Angel up to the roof to get some fresh air.

I should make note that the entire time, Lee is shown to be a nice and caring guy, he's stonefaced and blunt but is well meaning. He is nice to Angel. On the rooftop, Angel is comfortable enough with Lee to open up to him. Angel tells the story of a time that they were unfortunately sexually assaulted by a coworker, who made two advances on them without their full, given consent. It is a very emotional scene that I personally think is handled extremely well. Angel regrets telling Lee this, but ultimately, things progress.

On the 8th and final week, when the medical trial has concluded, Lee reveals that Angel was a part of a control group for the drug. I.E., they were being given Saline, and no actual drug. It was all a placebo. Lee then offers Angel to stay over at his place for the weekend, and Angel agrees almost instantly. At this point, Angel trusts Lee a lot due to his kindness and thoughtfulness he has shown in the story thus far.

The second half of the game takes place at Lee's place and things escalate further. Before long, Lee and Angel are sleeping in the same bed, and even bathe together. It has all the makings of a cute love story, of two people who meet under strange circumstances, but seem to form a genuine connection.

This illusion however, is shattered when it is revealed that Lee has been stalking Angel for some time now, taking pictures of them without their consent, collecting personal items (such as chewed gum, bloody tissues from the trash, and their jacket) and even has a doll he made in the image of them.

During this reveal, you are presented with two choices. I'll talk about the first choice: Reject.

Immediately, my first instinct upon seeing that Lee was a creep is to reject him. I did so, and Angel does just that. They reject him entirely, and immediately want to leave. Lee chokes up and then runs off with Angel's jacket. Angel decides to take this moment to try and fix the broken wifi router in Lee's place so they can get some service, namely to phone the police should the need arise.

During this time, Angel finds what they think is a router, but it is actually a signal jammer that Lee had installed in his closet to prevent Angel from contacting anyone in the time that they had spent together. Angel turns off the signal jammer, and immediately their cell service returns. In this moment, Angel realizes that nobody contacted them in the 3 days they have been gone, since they ran off with a strange man to his home out in the sticks, with no contact for 3 days.

Angel despairs, asking if they are really that alone, however this breakdown is interrupted by Angel noticing a hole in the wall nearby, which leads down a flight of stairs into a makeshift basement. Angel goes down the basement, namely because Lee is now coming back into the room, and at the bottom of the stairs they find the corpse of the coworker who had sexually assaulted them.

Lee also comes down the stairs and confesses to the murder, even detailing exactly how and why he did it. After confessing to the murder and his methods, the player is given another choice. Since I already chose to reject Lee once, I am only given the choice to reject him again.

Angel calls Lee out on his bullshit, and claims he is no better than Brandon, the coworker who assaulted them, by hiding things and taking things from them against their will. Lee even went as far as to kill for Angel, and Angel asked for none of this. He's just another selfish man out to satisfy his own desires.

After this, Lee kills himself with a power drill in the basement. You can choose to leave before he does, but I chose to stay and watch him die. He drills himself in the head and then slumps over on the ground, dead. The game ends with Angel wondering if the police will believe their story. (And I think they would, combined with Angel's testimony, Lee is the obvious bad guy here. Lee claiming that Angel would somehow be complicit in the murder is yet another manipulation tactic, one that holds no weight. The shrine alone would be reason enough for the police to believe him to be the killer. I digress.)

NOW, if this were the only ending to the game, I would not be writing this review and I would simply have recommended it to people as a nice little piece of bait n' switch psychological horror. I saw the reveal coming a mile away about Lee being a weirdo, the story had all of the makings for it, what with the gum and bloody tissues disappearing from the clinic's trash, and Angel's jacket being nowhere to be seen after they accidentally leave it at the clinic.

It's ending 2 that kills it for me.

In ending 2, you are given the option to accept Lee as he is. Angel agrees to help cover up the murder. There is an extended cutscene where Angel and Lee drive to get supplies and hide the body. There is then a scene where they hold hands and move in together in a brand new house, assumedly to start a new life.

This ending is then given a "THE END" splash screen, with hopeful music to go along side it. For all intents and purposes, it feels like the "true", canon ending to the game. Ending 1 simply ended with a short "ENDING 1" splash screen and then credits. No fanfare, no cutscene, no music. Just a cold stop ending.

In ending 2, a sexual assault victim agrees to move in with a murderer and stalker who had done multiple things against their will just because he was kind of nice and a little charming. It's gross. It feels like the author's stalker fantasy good ending. It's covered in slime.

This game had the makings of being something truly excellent. It could have been such a good, nuanced story. But ending 2 ruins it for me. I'd have written it much differently. In my version of Ending 2, I would have written Angel still caring about Lee, and out of this care for him, convincing him to turn himself in. Lee goes to jail. That would have been my ending.

After completing the game, me and my transgender friend discussed these endings at length. We both agree on the squandered potential. I cannot, in good faith, recommend this game. I want to, because it is well made. The art style is charming and quite good, but it's just ending 2 that sours the entire thing for me. So much potential, just for the "true" end being a stalker fantasy.

Maybe I'm hard misinterpreting the author's intent with this one. This is one of those games I want to be wrong about. These are my honest thoughts, however. If anyone else has played it, let me know what you think. Maybe you can redeem this game in my eyes. But for now, it's left a sour taste in my mouth, and an uncomfortable, slimy feeling in my stomach.

Can't Stop Thinking About Update 5/18

A bit of an update on what's happening with CSTA.

This week, unfortunately, there will not be an update on Sunday. I mentioned in a previous post I have a UTI and the nausea meds literally knock me out so I got very little writing done today which means there won't be anything to edit and put out tomorrow.

Chapter 9 will now be rewritten at the end of the series. I do plan to rewrite it, but for now, I want to continue the series as planned and having to go back and work on it has delayed further writing. Until then, the unrevised version will stay up.

In the next few days, ageless blogs will be blocked. I do not engage with minors, nor should minors be reading anything on my blog

Finally, I appreciate the enthusiasm with wanting updates, I really do. But if the only engagement you're going to have with me is replying "next chapter please" or messaging me on anon when I'm going to post the next chapter, please don't bother... I am not getting compensation for this. I am doing this for fun. But receiving several comments and messages either asking for the next update or requesting how the story ends is starting to legit piss me off...

I've said previously that the 141 and reader reconcile. Reader can work things out with them and still have a backbone. Just because someone finds it within themselves to forgive someone else (after they have proven they are sorry and rectify their behavior) does NOT make them spineless. Not every FMC needs to have a "eat shit and die" mentality when it comes to being wronged. Stop asking me for the ending you want. Stop telling me how to write my own story.

Beyond a blank slate reader

Hello everyone! There's been some wonderful discussions about inclusivity in the PPCU recently and I highly encourage them to keep on! A lot of it how certain phrases can code a reader as white, like "you blushed" etc. It's important to try and make your reader as inclusive as possible!

But I wanted to share some stories that aren't just a blank slate reader, but are my attempt to make people not only not feel excluded, but specifically included.

A lot of this is stuff i wrote because I wanted to see myself, like jewish or transmasc readers, in fics. Others I wrote because I want others to have that same feeling. That not only can you put yourself in the story, but you can actually see it clearly there.

I'll be honest, this came after getting an anon calling me not one but two slurs (three? They repeated one with a shortened version lol) and I wanted to be EVEN MORE LOUD about writing trans characters. i figured why not highlight all sorts of things that readers might like to read that are hard to find!

I've also included anything I think is under represented, like Boston!Joel with no age gap reader, or plus sized readers.

Below will be fics with readers and OC's with different gender identities, race, ethnicity, religion, and disabilties.

Most are Pedro Pascal and Oscar Isaac, but there's some with the other triple frontier boys <3

And to be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with a blank slate. MOST of what I write is blank slate. But you can absolutly be descriptive as long as you are tagging properly! And you can write for more than just no descripters. I am white, but I have no desire to only ever write white characters. We can all branch out and learn.

I've asked this before, what representation specifically do YOU want to see? Drop in my inbox, and I'll consider it, as going forward I think I'm more interested in x oc rather than x reader.

Last year I tried to compile a list of explicitly non-white fics by other writers and only got two people replying so it didnt go anywhere, but I'm going to try again this weekend! That way I can highlight not just myself.

Each series can be read seperately, but are best all together because there are side arches. Each series is a different TF boy and their OC, each OC is wildly varied.

Santi is coded to be autistic and is non-verbal often (more in the begining, she talks more as her anxiety eases.) and she has severe PTSD.

Take Your Time: Francisco Morales x oc, Jana. frankie is struggling to stay sober. Despite his attempts to push people away, Jana won't allow him to lose himself in addiction and depression, for his own and for their daughter's sake. Jana is a bisexual icon, and Afro-latina.

For the Longest Time: William Miller x OC, Lorelei. Lorelei and Will keep accidentally meeting. Suspicious and often judgmental, Lorelei is hesitant to let Will and his friends in. She learns she can trust them, and they learn she has a heart of gold and is the most loyal friend you could have. Lorelei is Vietnamese.

Coming soon... No Surrender: Ben Miller x oc, Cam. Join the tag list! Stuck in an abusive relationship and drinking heavily, Ben is just trying to get through this harvest and sell the family farm. Will calls in the only person he thinks can help his brother. Cam is Scottish and part Vietnamese (1/4), and has a hearing aid.

The high-level overview of that is there's some cool stuff going on with memory wrappers and godot to get stuff shake'n and jamm'n The rest of it is below the cut just so you don't have to scroll tons if you don't care, but take some time and read !! 3 days of work y'know !!

The first sketches were started at 10 pm tuesday the 15th. I tweaked it with some edits until about 1 am

For people working on pngs or long term projects -- make notes !! genuinely !! you can see "ok what was i thinking when i did this" and it made like infinitely easier. You might notice that stage 2 png was not long for this world -- we ended up cutting that one and shifting 3-5 down a stage, and just making a larger final stage. The night ended with: these!

Larger final, we moved where some hands ended up, cleaned some notes, and so on

Wednesday I got to work

on some second pass ones, e.g., cleaner lineart. Mind you, not final! To have proper safespace with the png we had to make actual layered sections to avoid ripped seams on squashing and stretching and rotating and etc.

These also had the first of the talk sprites! I don't do entirely new sprites for the talking ones just because of the pure quantity of images. So, just an arm tilt and head angling. This means we have mute and a talk variants of a few sprites (e.g., the stage 1 is 3 sprites. Body, scarf flappies, and head. We have talk versions of the body and the head). Also, he used to have nips! there was going to be a slightly darker purple but we scrapped it for . well . obvious reasons. We went with classy scarf modesty.

Thursday I started on the finals!

This was the first one sent -- showing off the layers. Tip, I used to layer based on like "back arm" "head" "fore body" etc. It's weirder to get used to when you use numbered layers, but holy shit it made importing easier. You automatically know the layer order to put them in to avoid clipping. Getting these done I got to work on testing 'em too!

this gave us our first working model! Oh, he used to have black robes too! this was to match the custom ingame sprites he got, but the color wasn't quite popping enough. The scarf saturation would later be turned up too, and more color adjusting. But this was workable! A lovely demo. All that was left was design tweaks and the talk sprites!

Friday was dedicated to

figuring out the colors and the talk sprites. For giggles, here's a bunch of variants produced!

We changed the robes, the scarf tone, and his lower gradient. neat Brave fact, his design has a gradient! It's horrible for gif compression! With all that done, then came doing well . all of the sprites!

Note, the talk sprites had some copied mute ones for visual reference. Gotta be consistent! It was at this point the pngtuber was "done", so to speak. Talk sprites worked and everything uh . jiggled right. But I still had a whole weekend! There wasn't as much photo evidence. What WAS changed between then and the final was: 1) the gradient was shifted to be a smooth curve instead of dappling 2) the talk sprite for stage 5's beak was fixed to remove a tangent line 3) the belly for stage 5 was rounded out to be more consistent with the game (less "doughy" to quote) 4) we added another sprite for the arm on stage 5 to layer better. Those changes weren't done until about Saturday, and then the code was tweaked all the way up until adding damage and transition effects on sunday and monday!

P.S., the model still clipped in the end a little! The code did some growth based on the fullness factor and . uh. wow!

Anway woo !! that was some wip photos and stories, I wish there was more of an intense struggle to tell but it was pretty quickly done. My shoulderblade hurts a bit to tell the truth and I think I overdid it on the pace but hooray!

Lindie also agreed to answer some questions for me:

Let's start with the technical: what are the programs you use to create your lovely podfics?

I use GarageBand to record with a ShureMV7 microphone, and I use Audacity for processing and post on SoundCloud.

How did you get into podficcing? Is this the first fandom you've tried it for?

I got into podfic making I knew what a podfic was. The story “No One Would Riot For Less” by sacrificethemtothesquid was a retelling of season one from Ed’s POV. I couldn’t put it down. So I recorded into the Voice Memos on my phone so I could take it with me on walks. When I found out that this was something that people do, I asked the author for permission to post and they said yes, and with the encouragement of some generous kind pirates in the comments I recorded more.

What made you fall in love with narrating stories?

This is the only fandom I’ve recorded although after I did a few stories, I auditioned for some books on audible and have recorded two stories there. It was not as rewarding or enjoyable as recording fanfiction. I love that the audio out there helps people in the ways it does. Folks tell me they listen while they do boring tasks or enjoyable art or their commute. I feel like I get to sit in the corner of a room in so many peoples lives, reading these awesome stories and it makes me very happy.

Any tips for beginners who wants to give podficcing a shot?

Tips for beginners! There are some good resources on AO3, the sapphires project, tree change project… These were designed to try to support new podfic makers as well as get those stories to audio. But I think the most important thing is find a story you want to live in! Something you really, really love, and then record it on your phone or whatever you have. I didn’t have a microphone until I started Hell or High Water.

Sound quality wise the two big things you need to do are to get your voice through a recording device and onto your DAW (digital work station – mine is GarageBand) While at the same time, eliminating other noises as much as possible. Echo is not your friend so a bathroom is your worst option… a place with soft walls blankets carpet on the floor in a quiet corner works great. Or a closet.

What is your favourite podfic that you've narrated?

My favorite podfic is which ever one I’m working on right now! There are some I am particularly proud of the vocal performance. Throat G.O.A.T. stands out… Constellationism, Baddy Zaddy have such sense of place! Captive of the Pirate King was the first one in which I really felt part of a community. I’ve made… 260 so far… each one was my favorite as I worked on it!

What are your personal challenges when it comes to narrating podfics?

I always want to do more than I can reasonably actually record. In choosing one it means I’m unchoosing several others.

I have dyslexia… sometimes I cannot get into the flow of reading which is frustrating.

There are some topics and materials I find difficult to narrate. Often that discomfort is offset by many other things that I love about a story and so I will narrate them anyway.

When I am approaching difficult material, I do a lot of journaling. I take breaks. I record sentences in pieces, then stitch it together and I am pretty sure you can’t tell in the finished recording.

We have a wonderful community of narrators who are there to listen and help each other with things like this.

Why OFMD? 🥹

Why OFMD? I think the underlying story of figuring yourself out later in life really appeals to me. I see myself in many of the characters, Ed, Stede, Jim, Izzy, Lucius… This story and the crew have really helped me understand myself better… feel less broken? (Chapter 25 baby!!!) feel less of an outsider? To recognize that parts of myself that I’ve had to tone down my whole life are worthy of being loud about.

i've seen a lot of speculation surrounding charles being told to lico and ferrari's intentions behind it. historically ferrari's PU doesn't perform as well in mexico, i think the whole point of telling charles to lico was so they could prevent a problem. also, carlos had a misfire in the beginning if i am not mistaken.

a lot though are saying that ferrari told charles to lico so they could create that 8s gap and sainz could make a safe stop, since he complained about charles who was gaining on him, so sainz could have an easy win. but this made charles vulnerable to norris. maybe ferrari misjudged the pace of norris otherwise they wouldn't have built that much of a gap to carlos, but then again charles was also in management mode. i would like to know though why sainz wasn't told to lico as much? was charles' PU just more vulnerable or something? i remember for a couple rounds straight in the first half of the season he was always switching back and forth between PUs bc there was always something wrong. i think it was miami where both ferrari drivers changed PUs, then for like three (or four?) weekends in a row after that charles was switching back and forth between PUs.

Firstly, a definition: "lico" in this anon means "lift and coast", which means taking the accelerator off later and starting braking later. This leads to periods of time when the car is running on inertia, changing speed slower than usual. It saves the engine, fuel and in some cases tyres. However, it is not the fastest way to do a lap and can also cause other problems, some of which were apparent in Mexico for Charles Leclerc.

I think Charles was more vulnerable in general because he'd had such a disrupted practise and had made less of the practise he had obtained than Carlos Sainz. From the post-race interviews, I get the impression Ferrari worked out early in the race that P3 was as good as it was going to get for Charles, so there was no point stressing out the engine for no reward. After all, the same engine will be needed for other races that will hopefully be more rewarding.

Charles also has a driving style that uses brake/throttle overlap in an unusual way. It's not clear why it works for him but it seems to help him manage tyres, and when he's not allowed to do it, he's more affected by that than other drivers would be. However, in a car and engine that's being preserved for another race, the tyres might not be generating enough heat for Charles' usual style to work anyway. So Charles was getting more wear and less speed from his tyres than usual, which made the P3 something of a self-fulfilling situation. Even if Charles didn't want to get the memo if his defence against Lando Norris was any sample!

I can believe Ferrari's power unit being less reliable at high altitude than others', it has had unreliability in Mexico before. I only got highlights and Carlos' misfire wasn't mentioned, probably because it was an unusually short slot and it ultimately didn't tell Carlos' race story efficiently. It would, however, make sense if the misfire had occurred and then cleared.

The unreliability from earlier in the season will definitely have been on Ferrari's mind. Charles probably has less margin than Carlos - and he certainly has more motive than Carlos to look at the 5 remaining races as a unit rather than as 5 separate possibilities of individual good results. (Charles' title chances may be poor but Carlos' are non-existent). [Edit: excised "almost" because as @things-methinks indicated, he lost the ability to win the title at Mexico. There are now 118 points on the table and Carlos is 120 points away].

i kinda knew that this day would hurt. and it does. its finality. its 'daniel. daniel please where are you. come on daniel wear a silly outfit and turn up at the paddock please. model ur new enchante for us please". tomorrow will hurt even more. no RIC on the timing boards, or on the onboard camera selection. but for me, i feel like i've lost a little bit of purpose. this year, i've definitely taken a step back from posting. my job has taken me away from a lot of race weekends. but when i am here, i love providing. i love refreshing the photo websites and seeing my guy, and sharing that with you all. just before i sleep, reading through all the fun (and deranged) tags y'all would leave on my posts. it was such joy. i truly never did it for the accolades or anything like that. i did it for the community. and i love this community so deeply. and i feel like today and evermore, what do i provide? i don't write, i don't make gifs, i don't make beautiful soul-crushing edits. my outpouring and expression of love to daniel was in content update. and that feels stupid to say (type) but god, just the unexplainable joy of a new daniel video that was so funny or pretty or anything else, and knowing that so many of u were also going to enjoy that was delightful. and this would hurt any weekend, but especially on cota weekend. i've sat and gone through my archive today, and sobbed a lot at so many videos and photos of him from over the years at cota. however shit the weekend may have been for him, he always glowed so differently at this race. his confidence was unmatched. my fingers twitch to refresh getty and see a new photo of him today and realise this was a bad nightmare. he's still a f1 driver. but nope. and instead its just a weird gaping hole. i loved race weekends. i loved the structure of them. i loved knowing for 3-4days we'd all be here, delighting together in daniel. that....structure. those set in stone dates are gone. and i just feel so weird about it today. not providing. not having something to provide. in the first week of this all, i said to friends, i really struggled seeing us all so sad, and not being able to do anything at all to bring happiness or light to the situation. and weeks on. that still remains. its funny, that the thing that has brought us so much sadness, could be so easily fixed by the one thing that won't happen. him being in that car tomorrow. him showing up today for media day. one photo. one instagram story. of him walking into the paddock today as a driver. for media day. would delight us all. but it just...won't happen. maybe, probably, never again (don't worry, i'm still a lil delulu). idk sorry, there was a point to this, but i'm finding it hard to properly articulate it. i think it's overarchingly, my fear that the community i have built here, on blamemma, might slowly dissipate. and that's okay. but it's also such a shame. we should have had so much more. he should have had so so so much more. maybe we'll get it again (don't worry, i'm still a lil delulu) but this emptiness feels so strange today.

but this is also to say u don't need to have a "purpose" in fandom. those who simply reblog, are the bricks that built this mansion. i just mean all of this in terms of how i have interacted within fandom for a while now.

For anyone that missed it earlier, Of Home Near chapter 19 went up today! it is finally no longer the same day that it has been for the previous four chapters. (yes, they all take place the same day -- well, the first 2/3 of 15 probably take place before midnight. no wonder Steve's so exhausted.)

About 250 words written today, mostly edits for Home 19. I think 20 will probably be either the last or the next-to-last chapter, though I've said that before. This story will be officially two years old in two weeks (in terms of when I started writing it, it already is), and frankly I do want to move onto a different fic. I expected it to be done a year ago, remember?

I am traveling the next two days(I have a 1 am flight on the third, so I'll be at the airport for most of tomorrow afternoon/evening), so don't expect a post tomorrow. I managed to not do most of the work I expected to do over the holiday, which I almost definitely needed but does mean I have to do a lot of it this weekend, since it's stuff I have to have done a week before the term starts. Some of it is happening during the seven hours I'll be at Sea-Tac tomorrow. (Shuttle schedule means I'm getting there way before my flight.)

Now don’t be mistaken, you didn’t want to learn the Bethmoora clan’s history because of some strategy or something to use against them like you family did for many other visitors or guests; but learning more about other existences than just other similar individuals was enough to imagine exploring the outside world without no care in the world.

(Now to further explain my situation if y’all are curious, if not, you can ignore this message before the keep reading tab but if y’all are curious, then y’all are free to keep reading.)

Now y’all know as a person we all have a lot of responsibilities that we have to focus on before doing anything that we love to enjoy.

For example, I am about to start college in a few days and I also work on the weekends, so I hardly have any time to do anything much less riding stories, playing video games, or hanging out with friends.

But do not worry. I still want to try to finish the story just so that way I can see how far my writing skills can go and because I’ve always wanted to be a fun, loving fanfic writer for characters who hardly get enough Fame or love as they should. But do not fret the chapter is already done. I just need to edit a few stuff to make sense and then I will have enough time to post it before I start college.

Hello!! Here's a little guide on how I browse Insta for F1 moments!! ❤️🏎️✨ there are probably much better/more efficient methods out there, but here is my usual way I tap at my phone during GP weekends:

1. I usually start with the GP's location!! Location tags are the main way I browse for content on insta.

tbh, I'm not sure if insta lets you see other users' tags in stories? like at the moment, I can't see who tags @ danielricciardo for example (but there maybe is a way!! and what I do is overly convoluted hehe) However, you can see location tags!

First, I'll go to the GP's or the circuit's account like the Vegas GP below

2. Location tags can have specific and various wordings, so I find it easiest to go to a post and click on a location tag from there (there are so many location tags!! for example, the tagged photos for the Las Vegas GP also have locations like "Sphere" or "Las Vegas Strip" but these are less F1-focused, so I usually don't go for broader tags or just the city at-large unless the F1-related tags run dry. More on that later!)

so here in the post below, I'll click F1 Las Vegas

3. After clicking on a location, it should take you to a map like this!

I will note too, I'm on an iPhone and someone once said they couldn't see this map on Android T_T but uncertain what the issue was and this was a while ago!

4. If there's a colorful circle, there are stories to see!! 💖✨ Now I click away.

As stories pop up, I take a look at where they're posting from, like if they're in the paddock, sponsor areas, with the media, or a cool spot on track. If they are, that means their other stories may have some cool stuff, too! If something seems promising, I'll click on their account name at the top.

5. Once in the account you can view all their stories. Since we know they're at the GP, they may have other nifty moments!

6. And they do!! This is how I find content that's not in the location tag.

7. If it's one of the blorbs and it feels gucci to share, I'll save it and do a bit of editing real quick if its over-exposed/kinda blurry/etc. and then post it on here!!

8. Now I'll go back to the location tag and repeat! After clicking through all the stories in that batch (since insta loads like 20 max at a time) you can go back off the map, re-tap the location name, and the circle will re-fill with new stories. When there aren't anymore to see, the circle will be grey.

9. You can also x out of the location to main map. This will show more of the location tags in the area. I do this sometimes to see more locations I wouldn't have thought of!! Sometimes there are other tags people use and they can have cool stuff!

once through with the 20 or so stories that insta loads into the batch, you can wiggle around the map to reload it and get a new batch.

😵‍💫 as a quick note, this method (while fun to see the world!) leads to seeing a lot of unrelated-to-F1 content so it can be a bit of a time-suck

10. The last step is being extra, extra nosy and checking stories from GP-related accounts. News outlets, sponsors, musicians performing there, influencers, influencer management agencies, F1 Experiences, etc. Often brands will have country-specific accounts like redbullmexico or redbullhu which follows athletes/celebs who might be at the GP, so I'll look at their following list and click through stories.

Certain reporters often post wonderful photos! There are also of course professional photographers there!! (and it feels extra extra important to always source pro photographers' work!! It's a hard field!! And I am a mere content yoinker.)

Because I love to make life hard, I don't follow anyone on Insta and I usually keep to browsing only GPs/sporting events. I used to keep up with a musician where I kinda learned these insta ropes, and I spent a bit too much time on the web. I need to put some artificial barriers to make it tougher for myself on purpose so I go touch grass every now and then and enjoy other hobbies 🌿✨

and that's it!! ❤️ I finally understand the appeal of fishing. Sometimes you find something small, sometimes something big! You never know! I kinda like the challenge and it's a bit joyfully mindless after work, so it feels fun to teleport around through the magic of the web to see a GP.

☝️😎 Quick notes I feel I should add: folks can see if you view their stories. I use my fan account instead of my irl name account.

Also, I always handle this content thoughtfully. These are often folks' memories from race weekend they're sharing! I feel thankful to see it!! So I try to ask myself if it feels in good-taste and appropriate to re-post before sharing on tumblr dot com of course. And I'm only interested in publicly available content, but I give it a vibe check before posting ✨ and I like to source content (unless its after a GP and the stories are gone and its just a random potato gif I made!!) I usually sit on little gifs through a weekend to make a bigger set after its over.

anyways I felt like mentioning these things since I often get lost in the content sauce and like to be sure I'm sharing stuff responsibly!!

Opening up the backdoor, you sigh a bit as you step into the alleyway, your trash bag full and heavy on your shoulder as you make your way down further inside it.

Dark and musty, it's awful, but if you don't throw your trash out tonight then you'll have to deal with it in the morning, meaning, waking up early... Which you really don't want to do.

Reading the numbers on the sides of the dumpsters, you find the one belonging to your block and toss it inside, huffing just a bit from the effort. You certainly aren't that athletic, and since you graduated, you've never really gone outside much either.

Not to say you never did go out, but oftentimes it was your friends who asked you and you just tagged along. Happy to be with them, but not really engaging in anything too much. It was a bit of a comfort nowadays, but you have noticed that they slowly started asking you less and less...

Maybe they were getting bored of your presence there? Watching but not acting?

Perhaps you should text one of them and ask if they want to go drinking this weekend, relax, and connect a bit... Yeah, that'd be nice.

11. what’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?

like I mentioned in the last post, I LOVE doing research for writing. I love the feeling of putting effort into whatever will make my story feel that much more authentic, plus it's fun to learn some new stuff, even if it doesn't stick around in my brain long term.

to rehash, for my Apex Legends SCP fic for Wraith's kunai, I learned about ductile-to-brittleness transition for metal, basically as metal drops in temperature, it becomes more brittle and prone to shattering/breaking but the temp where that transition happens depends on the metal. the point was that I wanted it to have an ability where the temp drops into dangerously low levels as a sort of "worthiness rating" a la Thor's hammer from Marvel, but still maintain its strength and usability.

39. are you an avid reader?

I wish! I used to read more as a kid but high school, college, and ADHD destroyed me so I spent years after college just not reading much outside of fanfiction. a few years ago, tho, I finally tried audiobooks and it's been a huge game changer for me, so I've been trying to catch up on books I've been wanting to get to for years. I've been reading (or listening, but I'm just gonna say read lmao) fiction and nonfiction from bell hooks to Tamsyn Muir to Jason Stanley to a bunch of other random authors. lots of stuff to catch up on! I just wish I could read more, but I typically only get books in when I'm cleaning my apartment

outside of books, I do enjoy fanfiction a lot but I am also quite picky 😅

44. any writing advice you want to share?

yes. if you think you're bad at something in your writing, FIX IT. I literally mean do some research on how you can improve, read some other fiction, and actively work on making it better. just like any other hobby, if you want to improve you have to work on the thing you're weak at. if you suck at dialogue, WRITE MORE OF IT. do you suck at description? guess what you need to do this weekend? we as writers still have to put the time in practice our flaws.

81. if you could go back in time and give your younger self a piece of writing advice specific to you, what would it be?

stop being so afraid to write shit. you can't edit something that doesn't exist so just FINISH YOUR WORK

90. do you notice your own voice in your writing style?

I wanna say yes, but also.....idk? it's like....what is my natural smell as a person? fuck if I know lmao
