Geology and the Economy/Trade in Your Fictional World: Explained
Hi, I'm Bird. I am a geology Ph.D. student and I love reading fiction and playing videogames, however something that can really pull me out of a fictional universe is a lack of understanding of basic geology, and how that would influence your fictional world. Today I will cover geology that can effect trade, some landscape features, and construction!
Things that are typically necessary/desired in a fictional world are building materials, gemstones/precious metals, and fossil fuels/ sources of energy. However, a lot of these things are not found together, and they typically have some features to make them more distinct in terms of landscape, so lets talk about it!
Gemstones/ Precious metals and landscape features
Typically, gemstones can be found in two different rock types. The first is intrusive igneous rocks (magma that slowly cooled underground to form course-grained rocks like granite) and high grade metamorphic rocks (rocks that got put under intense heat and pressure under the earth's surface). Some minerals are more likely to form in particular conditions than others, but for the most part these minerals can be found interchangeably within both of these places. *Note: this is a gross oversimplification but we are starting small
(Yes it is a shitty chart better pictures will come further in the post)
If you are writing these minerals based off and igneous deposit, good descriptions for the rocks would be speckled, with mineral grains of about the same size and varying in color. They should NOT be striated, and they will often form bald (unforested) cliffs that are typically rounded and not jagged.
If you are writing with metamorphic rocks, you would expect these rocks to be layered, typically having light and dark layers with some minerals possibly being much larger than the others surrounding it. These textures can definitely (sometimes) be observed from a distance.
*Final notes about minerals* Quartz varieties are difficult, quartz can be found in volcanic, metamorphic, sedimentary, and intrusive igneous settings. If you are writing about agate specifically it is almost always volcanic in nature.
Diamonds are found in volcanic ash deposits called kimberlites, these deposits can occur in any rock type, so while they are igneous, they can be found anywhere. They have zero connection to the surrounding rocks.
2. Fossil Fuels
If a region is producing oil or coal, it is going to be from a sedimentary environment that is very rich in ancient plant material (like millions of years old). A unique feature of these locations would be finding lots of plant fossils, and rocks that can be found in association with these would be sandstone, shale, conglomerates/breccias, and limestones. Sedimentary rocks form in layers, so if exposed the layers will be very visible from a distance. You can also get unique features due to preferential weathering (fancy way of saying some rocks are harder than others, so when exposed to the same weather some rocks will break down faster than others). Also, natural oil seeps are a thing in places where natural oil is prevalent, but I couldn't find a good picture sorry.
3. Building Resources
based on the rocks found in each region, the buildings will be made out of different materials, so lets breakdown what building materials would be used based off what rocks are present in the location.
Sedimentary rocks- lots of options here, so I will just info dump. If the region is drier, limestone is a good choice, historically may desert areas use limestone, it is soft and easy to carve, but it will dissolve slowly with rain. Sandstone is a durable rock that can be used, but it is very hard as it is made of quartz. Clay! shale breaks down in humid environments and will often make clay, this is a great, amazing building resource that could drive economy.
Metamorphic rocks- Marble.... if you want to make luxurious marble temples, metamorphic rocks are a must! Other comments, metamorphic rocks will often have layers of weaker minerals and stronger minerals, that means they will break along a defined surface. A lot of older houses in the Italian Alps (Aosta Valley) use these rocks for roofing. Slate roofing is also common in a lot of places, slate is formed from really low grade metamorphism, so this resource can be available in both sedimentary and metamorphic locations within reason.
Igneous- Granite (light) and Gabbro (dark) is very hard and therefore it is used frequently in countertops today. This is also important because these rocks will take a high shine from polishing. Igneous rocks are also perfect for making cement! Volcanic ash mixed with quicklime and salt water is the recipe for roman concrete which is arguable much better than current day concrete but otherwise doesn't offer much more benefit.
Thank you if you made it this far, I want to make more guides in the future to hopefully cover more geology topics that can influence a story (possibly natural disasters and associated landscape features for subtle foreshadowinggggg)
This guide is very simplified! It is supposed to cover a lot of information for people who may not know a lot about geology, but are interesting in creating fictional universes! If you know a lot about geology already, please avert your eyes, or comment something additional!

Hello~ I just wanted to let you know that this is what my doodling-while-i-work sketches look like these days... 👀 I am obsessed with my beautiful blue lady 💙🥺
(ignore the colours, this was done with blue and pink highlighters lmao. they just were in hand at the time)
Not showing you my pinterest board for because it's embarrassingly full lmao. I'll make a nice moodboard for her and post it here though! Also I have been looking at couture dresses and pearls and gems to figure out her dress (because i am OBSESSED with all the layers and details you put, there's so much leeway for beautiful fabrics and ruffles and ways to connect the hood!!!), so thank you for rekindling my fashion designer side 😌✌️
I have been toying with the idea of making the moon into actual horns since we talked about it (like Maleficent?) - you mentioned opals and shell linings, and I think it would look sick if the moon-antlers/horns had that opalescence sheen to them? Maybe it could mirror the mask?
Idk, I haven't quite fleshed her out yet so that may change. She still doesn't have a name; Miss Missy is being very secretive about her life (no surprise there 🙄).
I do wanna show you this! There's this gemstone called Azurite, that has this beautiful shade of deep blue, with purples, and some greens and gold speckles and spots (seriously - look it up, it's fantastic). I like the idea of her being connected to gems and stuff, and I think this one in particular fits her vibe SO well?? So yeah.
Sorry if this is kind of a long, weird ramble, but I just wanted to let you know that our Blue Lady (that's her temporary name) is being well taken care of and cherished 🌙💙✨ Hope you're doing well!!!! 🫂💙🥺
AAAAA sorry for the late(r) response I was about to go to bed and saw this. I just- OMGOMGOMGOMG my face is heating up. Jinefvijneifjvneijfcn 💜🩵💙🩵💙🩷🩷💙🩵💜🩵💖💕💓❣️💘💞💗💕💗💖💕💞💗🐟🔥💕💖🩵💞🩵💞🩵🔥💓💗💙💗❣️💗❣️🐟❣️🐟💙💓💓🔥😱❣️🔥😱💗💓💕💕❣️💕💜🔥❣️🔥🦑🔥
Me staring at my phone rn.
And why she urple?? There’s so many thoughts going on in my head rn.
1. YOU DID THAT WITH HIGHLIGHTERS WHAT??? excuse me??? what In the Bob Ross???? I love the way you blended the pink and blue and the sketchiness of the lines AUGH. It’s so crunchy… good food…….. you captured her whimsical aura perfectly. The fabric for her sleeves is so nice. You drew her so pretty omg omg
2. I love malificent so much :(((( I love sleeping beauty, I love the live action malificent… OPAL MASK AND HORNS HELLO. Blue Lady is killing it over here, my god. She’s got the bling. She’s got the swag. What more could she have.
3. My grandparents are jewelers and they used to keep random geodes and gems around their house and azurite was one of them! I remember because they would try to teach me about rocks and gems and different gem cuts and I just sat there “no thoughts, head empty, I only want to look at pictures of agate and peridot”. their azurite was very very small and I’m not sure where it is anymore. My favorite gem has to be zircon though, love that stuff. I will for sure be reading more on azurite though!
4. (Psst I have a character who’s like a pomegranate goddess and I think her and Blue Lady would get along wonderfully. Her name is Punicae and you can find her og design here.)
them with not accurate coloring cause i be speed drawing. They slay. Together.
I’m going to go to bed. Stay safe, take care of yourself, LOVE yourself. Tysm for this I’m crying. Love you very much and giving you all the azurite your heart could desire 💙🩵💖

Hi hi! Since were talking about rocks, do you have any tips on storing/cleaning them, esp in regard to moisture and sunlight? Im a beginner collector and id love to hear if you have some insight, because im kind of lost. Thank u love your blog <3
Welcome to the hobby!! Rockhounding is the most fun thing in the world; I hope you're having a blast.
So there’s no easy answer for this question, because it’s going to be different for every single rock. Halite should be stored somewhere dry, and never get wet. Laumontite should be stored in water, and never get dry. You see how this can quickly become complicated. Here’s some general advice.
Direct sunlight is bad for rocks. Don’t display them in a windowsill unless you’re okay with their colors fading. Not every rock will fade, but fluorite is especially notorious for this. Artificial light should be okay, but some rocks are SUPER reactive to any kind of light. Proustite will permanently darken and discolor when exposed to light, and realgar will disintegrate into a super toxic dust. Keep rocks like that stored in complete darkness. Fused/reconstituted quartz (the stuff crystal balls are made of) will focus sunlight like a magnifying glass and burn your house down. Keep that one covered with a cloth or something.
Humidity is also generally bad for rocks, but especially hematite, meteorites… basically anything with iron. They’ll rust. Halite (rock salt) will actually absorb moisture in the air, weep it out later, and make a mess wherever you’re displaying it. Store them somewhere dry! If you just have them on a shelf or something they’re probably fine, as long as they’re not in your steamy bathroom. But if you live somewhere super humid, or if you’ve got a meteorite in your collection, your rocks might benefit from a dehumidifier. (I currently do not have a dehumidifier, but the two meteorites in my collection are doing okay. So it’s really up to you if you want to sink money into that extra bit of protection. Your rocks might be fine without it.)
On the flip side, some rocks do need to stay wet, or they’ll become brittle, spontaneously crack, or slowly disintegrate into dust. The best solution is to store these rocks in water, but I have an excellent specimen of laumontite which I’ve given a coating of diluted clear craft glue, which has made it fairly watertight and able to be displayed on a shelf. Hanksite is another mineral that can change its moisture level and fall apart, but simply rubbing some mineral oil on it about once a year is all it needs. Don’t try that with opals. If an opal was sold to you in water, keep it in water. If it was sold to you dry, it’s probably fine to let it stay dry.
Never never never get pyrite wet. Pretty much all specimens of pyrite will get Pyrite Disease and disintegrate eventually just due to small amounts of moisture in the air, but a stable specimen could last for decades. Get it wet, and you guarantee it an early death. If you have a pyrite specimen with Pyrite Disease (it will be turning powdery, brittle, and blue-grey), store it away from your other rocks. It’s giving off fumes that could potentially damage them.
Cleaning! Most moisture-safe rocks can be cleaned with some warm, soapy water and a toothbrush. Be gentle when scrubbing softer rocks, like anything below 3 on the mohs scale. Quartz is basically indestructible, you can totally run quartz through a dishwasher.
To remove rust stains and dirty-looking discoloration, soak your rocks in Iron Out for a few hours. Rinse and repeat with a fresh bath as needed. Most rocks will be fine with this. Not hematite. For obvious reasons, don't use Iron Out on hematite.
To remove crusty white coatings on quartz or agate (probably a layer of Ugly Calcite), soak them in dilute acid. You can buy a jug of muriatic acid at Walmart. Add a little bit of acid to some water in a pyrex bowl, and soak the rocks overnight. Some rocks will NOT be fine with this, so look up whether your $800 specimen is acid soluble BEFORE you put it in the acid bath. (This is a mistake you will only ever make once.) Quartz is fine, quartz is immortal.
If your rock is comprised of hair-thin crystals like rutile or aurichalchite, looks “fuzzy” like okenite, or has a velvety texture like rosasite or velvet malachite, don’t clean it! Try to touch it as little as possible! Handling the rock can easily break those delicate crystals.
In that vein, some rocks give off nasty fumes or dangerous dust. Native mercury, or anything radioactive or asbestiform, should be kept in sealed glass or plastic jars/boxes. Don’t try to clean or handle them! (You may have heard the myth that tiger eye is asbestiform. This is a common misconception! Tiger eye is a form of quartz, which is safe to handle and does not require special storage.)
If you’ve used a dish for cleaning or storing rocks, don’t use it for cooking or eating! Some rocks contain arsenic, lead, mercury, or about a billion other toxic substances that you don’t want making their way into your body. Get in the habit of washing your hands after handling your rocks, even “safe” rocks like quartz, which can contain traces and inclusions of other, more dangerous stuff. (Although, as someone who has touched WAY too many incredibly toxic minerals with my bare hands - it’s not gonna instantly kill you. Seriously, just wash your hands, you’re fine.)
Anyway, all that being said, your best friend is google. “How to store (rock),” “how to clean (rock),” “is (rock) toxic,” “is (rock) water soluble” are all things you should look up whenever you get a new specimen! You might go down a rabbit hole and end up learning something really cool!

Often discovered in fields or along coastal beaches, lakes or streams. These holes occur from the elements beating down upon them over many years. These stones were believed to be able to protect cattle, their milk, and people from witches. These stones are found in different parts of the world. Hag stones represent a magical time when these rocks were used for protection, fertility, good luck, and safety.
Of course there is a plethora of other stones and crystals that have protection properties or specific roles in spiritual work, I am merely highlighting nine of the most widely used throughout time and their historical background. Let me know if you want me to delve further into protection patterns and other uses for shielding in Light Work.
And as always, Blessings to you all.

Gemstone Beads Season: Which Gemstone Beads Should You Wear in summer
Beads are very popular in jewelry making, and there are a lot of beads on the market, such as glass beads, acrylic beads, clay beads, metal beads, and so on. Gemstone beads are more precious than other beads. So how to choose the best gemstone beads? In this article, we will talk about the characteristics of different gemstone beads, and then you can choose which one you like according to your own needs.
How to choose the right natural stone jewelry?
If you are not a jewelry professional, it is easy to get caught up in some of these jewelry and gemstone marketing terms, so here’s what I can tell you about choosing the right natural stone jewelry. The three C’s are probably the most important. Carat is size, but also a measure of weight.
Lapis Lazuli, True Love Jewelry
Named after a precious stone, lapis lazuli is often said to symbolize true love, bringing protection and providing strength. The stone itself has a long history with mankind. It was used by Egyptians more than 4,000 years ago and also holds significant religious meaning to Christians and Muslims as well. These days, Lapis Lazuli is most commonly found in jewelry designs.
How do you know when Aquamarine is authentic?
Aquamarine is a transparent variety of beryl, with a pale blue color most commonly occurring in Brazil. Aquamarine is quite common to find as gemstones and jewelry. When buying Aquamarine gemstones and jewelry, you will want to ensure they are authentic. An easy way to tell if an Aquamarine is authentic is by seeing how light bounces off it when you look at it face-up and up-close.
How can I distinguish agate from quartz and jasper?
Agate is distinguished from quartz and jasper by its greater hardness, specific gravity, and refractive index. While quartz can be scratched with a steel file, agate may only be scratched by corundum, which has a hardness of 6 to 7. However, it can easily be distinguished from jasper by coloring: while jasper features dull red patterns and appears opaque even when cut correctly (which indicates high levels of ferric iron), agate is translucent.
Selecting a ruby bracelet?
When selecting a ruby bracelet, we should pay attention to its color and clarity. The most valuable ones are deep red or bright red with a relatively small amount of visible impurities. Brightness is a measurement of dispersion, expressed as a percentage of light returned from cut gemstones.
How can I get well-shaped Topaz?
Before you can find out how to get well-shaped Topaz, it’s important to have a good idea of what exactly well-shaped means. To many people, a well-shaped stone looks like it’s perfectly round. Others feel that a well-shaped Topaz resembles an octagon with rounded edges.
Rhodolite Garnet – gorgeous colors are better than other red garnets
Garnets are known for having an abundance of colors, but Rhodolite Garnet – gorgeous colors are better than other red garnets stands out as one of those rare and spectacular jewels that, against all odds, prove to be all colors at once. In fact, it can range from a vivid and iridescent ruby red to deep burgundy with traces of purple.
Conclusion
When summer arrives, you'll find that your favorite pieces of jewelry are not going to be comfortable when worn on their own. Instead, it's best to make sure that you have some gemstone beads handy so that you can layer them with other items or even just wear a few at a time. The colors and materials used for these pieces are designed for people who live in tropical climates, meaning that it doesn't matter if they get wet.

Agate
Note - Click on the word(or question) before the description to head to the source directly or to the book used! (If it is involving a God or Goddess I will add links about said God or Goddess for more information about them so try clicking on their names!) Also please do not use any of this as medical treatment over treatment from a professional!
Pronounced - ah . git
Name - The name is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.
What is agate? - Agate is a cryptocrystalline variety of silica, chiefly chalcedony, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color.
What is cryptocrystalline? - Cryptocrystalline means that the mineral crystals are so fine that they are only vaguely seen in patterns and fine variations.
How is Agate formed? - Agate forms in cavities of volcanic rocks, water and carbon dioxide bubble out of the volcanic rock and rise to the surface, over time the minerals crystalize in layers.
Agate in Ancient times - In ancient times, roughly 20,000 B.C., the stone age people found comfort in agates as a form of protection.
Agate in History - In all of recorded history, agate is the first stone ever mentioned in an ancient document. Agate was highly prized as a talisman or amulet by primitive people. Mithridates, king of Pontus, had an enormous collection of thousands of agate bowls. This was one way of displaying one’s wealth and at the same time, protecting one’s kingdom from enemies. Agate bowls were also prized in the Byzantine Empire. Seeking out the finest, artistically crafted agate bowls became almost competitive among European royalty during the Renaissance.
Agate Myths & Lore - Agate was said to quench the thirst if placed in the mouth of a parched sufferer. It was believed to protect against fever. In many cultures agate is believed to cure the sting of a scorpion and the bite of a snake, calm the mind, prevent infection and silence thunder and lightning. When placed at the head of a bed, agate was thought to provide happy dreams.
Agate Associations - Agate is associated with the Zodiac signs Gemini and Virgo, the moon, and the element earth.
Agate’s Vibration Number - Seven
What’s a vibration number? - When speaking of the vibration of a crystal we are speaking of two types of vibrations. One is numerology vibrational which is a form of numerology or the study of the influence of numeral vibrations. Crystal vibration is the natural vibrational energy that is present in each crystal and stone. Many people can feel this vibrational frequency while holding it and using it in healing work. Each stone has its own frequency and can be matched to the frequency of different body parts of the human body.
Typical Appearance of Agate - There are multiple different types of agate and their colors can vary in what they help work with on top of the other healing attributes of agate, though these are the typical colors in agate you can find. A clear or milky-white, white to grey, light blue, orange to red, and black.
Agate Physical Healing Energy - Agate is said to enhance mental function by improving concentration, perception, and analytical abilities. When placed on the abdomen or used as an elixir, Agate stimulates the digestive system and relieves gastritis. It is also said to be beneficial for the eyes, hollow organs such as the stomach, uterus, intestines, etc., and is said to heal skin disorders and itching due to insect bites. Agate is also supposed to be helpful to the heart and blood vessels, wearing Agate in the middle of the chest is supposed to strengthen the cardiac muscles, and heals emotional disharmony that prevents acceptance of love. A cold Agate can generically soothe a fever.
Agate Emotional Healing Energy - Agate is said to encourage a sense of reality and pragmatic thinking. Agates with regular designs soothe those who desire peace and harmony, while those with irregular designs can stimulate actions and important decision making. Agate is beneficial in self-analysis and uncovering hidden circumstances that might interfere with well-being. It promote self-acceptance and confidence, encouraging the speaking one’s own truth. Agate overcomes negativity and bitterness of the heart, by healing anger, fostering love, and lending courage to start over.
Agate Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy - Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels.
Agate Spiritual Energy - Agate raises awareness and links into the collective consciousness of the oneness of life. It encourages quiet contemplation of one’s life experiences that lead to spiritual growth and inner stability.
Agate Goddess Crystals - Agate honors Aurora, Roman Goddess of the Dawn. She brings beauty of dawn each day, the vivid color streaked and swirled across the clouds. Agate honors Bona Dea, the Roman Earth Goddess of Fertility and the Greek Goddess of Women. She protects women through all of their changes, and is a skilled healer, particularly with herbs. Agate honors Gaia, the Greek Earth Mother Goddess. Born directly out of Chaos, the primal emptiness, she was the first (or one of the first) beings to appear during the process of creation, and is honored as being the Earth itself. Agate honors Cerridwen, the Welsh Goddess of Inspiration and Knowledge. She rules the gifts of prophecy and magic, and powers death and rebirth. She is the spiritual guardian of spiritual transformation. Agate honors Nyx, the Greek Goddess of the Night. She is usually seen riding in a chariot, trailing the stars and painting the night sky. Agate is strongly associated with Nyx because of its properties to protect against stress and for keeping bad dreams away. Agate can also be used in devotions for Clota, the Goddess of the River Clyde; Callisto, the Greek Moon Goddess; Chirakan-Ixmucane, the Mayan Creator Goddess; Dione, Phoenician Earth Goddess; Itzpapalotl, the Aztec Butterfly Goddess; and Jana, the Roman Goddess of Secret and Hidden Things.
Agate Magical Uses - Agates exhibit both the strength of a stone and the fluidity of air and water, making them useful as balancing and grounding stones. They are excellent for stabilizing energy and combating negativity and bitterness. Agates are often used in ceremonies concerning love, healing, properties, and courage, and many believe that a person can only tell the truth when looking at an agate.
Agate Feng Shui Uses - Because agates have a soothing quality, it’s helpful to place them in any area of your home that would be benefit from a gentle, calming influence. Different varieties of agate can be used for different purposes around the home.
Agate Personal/Spiritual Growth - Agate raises consciousness and awareness of the self, encouraging contemplation that can lead to deep spiritual understanding and growth. They also enhance mental function and improve concentration and analytical abilities, which can be helpful for problem solving. Working with Common Crystals- a few tips
If you’re new to collecting crystals, the many different varieties out there can seem pretty overwhelming. It can be even harder to determine what’s worth spending your money on, and if you’re getting what you were looking for! I’ve listed some of the more common crystals witches tend to use in the craft below (at least from my experience), and some general information about them.
Amethyst
Amethyst points can often be heat-treated. These are the little white points with purple tips that many occult stores carry. By heating the stone, it produces a very vibrant purple (more vibrant than naturally-occurring amethysts, oftentimes). Nothing is physically wrong with these points, but be aware that the spiritual energy may not be as potent.
Amethyst is very light-sensitive. If you leave them out in direct sunlight, they can fade to a dark bluish color. This is something to be cognizant of when you start buying crystals so you can store them properly.
Amethyst can grow in several different varieties. This can include ametrine, chevron amethyst, Brandenburg amethyst, amethyst spirit quartz, and so on. Pick the one that feels right for you!
Amethyst is a very high-vibration stone. It’s great for working with in the spiritual plane, but it can be difficult if you’re trying to stay grounded. If you’ve never worked with amethyst before, it can take some getting used to, and you may feel dizzy or light-headed initially.
Amethyst, despite being a relatively common mineral, is often quite pricey. When buying it, ensure that you are getting exactly what you’re looking for- whether that be its variety, the deepness of its color, if it formed naturally, etc.
Rose Quartz
Rose quartz can be found in a variety of lovely pink hues. I’ve heard from some collectors that the darker pink rose quartz specimens are more rare (this does not change the natural spiritual energy, however).
Rose quartz, like amethyst, can fade when in direct sunlight.
Rose quartz can also run on the more expensive side (most quartz varieties tend to be a little pricey, a medium sized stone can range from $15-$30 in my experience), so make sure you’re getting exactly what you want!
Rose quartz is the love stone. If you don’t have the means to get other crystals that fit a specific role in a love spell or are short on supplies in general, rose quartz is great! It can be used for self-love spells, attraction glamours, friendship spells, healing spells, etc.
Smokey Quartz
Smokey quartz, like amethyst and rose quartz, can fade in direct sunlight.
This also tends to be the most expensive variety out of the quartz stones.
Smokey quartz can range from a deep black, varying shades of brown, or a lightly pigmented grey. It can often occur as inclusions in clear quartz, citrine, and amethyst.
Smokey quartz is an excellent mood stabilizer. If you tend to get depressed, I would recommend carrying a piece of it around with you, or meditating with it frequently.
While amethyst helps you access the third eye and spiritual plane, smokey quartz is one of the best crystals for grounding and removing negative energy. For this reason, it is recommended that you clear it often.
Clear Quartz
If you don’t have the means to buy crystals up like crazy but still want to use them in your craft, get your hands on some clear quartz. It is the best all-purpose crystal around, and it can be programmed to do basically anything. If you’re ever lacking a specific crystal in a spell, substitute it with clear quartz.
Clear quartz has high-vibration energy because it so easily connects with higher planes. Despite this, I think it is very user-friendly and is willing to help you along with your craft (I often think clear quartz considers itself the main witch crystal)!
Clear quartz is excellent for scrying (they are almost always the standard crystal ball for mediums besides selenite). Their high vibrations can make it easier to channel visions.
Citrine
This is perhaps one of the most important crystals to include on this list because it is so easy to buy low-quality citrine. Natural citrine is hard to obtain because of the way it grows in the Earth, and for this reason, many of the standard-fair citrine you find in stores will be heat-treated.
Being heat-treated is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can change the energy of a crystal. If you’re looking for the real deal, look for more pale varieties of citrine that range from light brown to a translucent brown color. Bright orange or brown citrine that occurs naturally is very hard to find.
An indicator that you’ve gotten heat-treated citrine is having all the pigment concentrated at the tip of the crystal while the bottom is a stark white color (much like heat-treated amethyst). Natural citrine will have a more consistent, pale color throughout the structure of the crystal.
Citrine can cleanse other crystals, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still absorb negative energy! Cleanse and charge it as you would normally for other crystal varieties.
Citrine is also light-sensitive, and can fade very easily if its in direct sunlight. Be sure to store it properly because it doesn’t tend to run cheap!
Malachite
This has been said many times, and it cannot be overstated enough- malachite is toxic in water. Because of its relatively low hardness (4), it can dissolve easily in liquid. Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, meaning that the copper components of it will dissolve in liquid easily.
For this reason, malachite should never be used directly for potions or crystal elixirs. Indirect charging is fine, but you should never place it directly in water- it’s bad for the crystal and for you!
Malachite is a good crystal for beginners. It is very honest about what you need to do in order to fulfill something, but it is more than willing to guide you on that journey.
I find malachite is very helpful for meditation because it helps facilitate self-reflection and honesty.
Fluorite
Fluorite is the crystal for students. It enhances memory and focus, which is especially helpful for studying and test-taking.
Fluorite is very fragile, however- it has a hardness level of 4, meaning it will get scratched easily and it can dissolve in liquids. Fluorite is also light-sensitive.
It is important to be especially careful about fluorite’s light sensitivity, because not only will it fade, but the crystal structure within it will start to break down (you will notice a collection of sparkly-looking white streaks and dots in the crystal when this happens).
Fluorite can be found in many different varieties, such as rainbow (usually green and purple), purple (Mexican purple fluorite tends to be of very good quality in my experience), green, etc.
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis is such a unique stone because it is compromised of 3 different minerals: lazurite (the blue), calcite (the white), and pyrite (the gold flecks). This formation makes it particularly rare, and for this reason it tends to be one of the most expensive crystal varieties.
Because of its rarity, it is easy to be sold imitations of lapis, with sodalite being the most common. Sodalite is also white and blue, but it doesn’t have the same flecks of gold as lapis or the deep royal blue color.
You’ll know you’re getting a good piece of lapis if the blue is very deep and vibrant, there are many gold flecks, and that there is more blue color in the crystal than white.
Lapis has an intricate history with the ancient world, as it was often used in jewelry pieces for royalty in the Mediterranean and Near East (especially Egypt). Lapis was also referred to many times in the Bible (originally as sapphire, but it hadn’t yet been discovered).
Lapis is a great stone for connecting with your higher intuition, as well as helping you focus on important tasks at hand. It is thought to enhance intelligence as well.
Agate
Agate is an extremely versatile crystal, and very affordable for those who are just starting out with crystal magick.
Agate occurs in all shapes and sizes, vibrant colors, and varieties. The more commonly used types in witchcraft tend to be Crazy Lace Agate, Moss Agate, Fire Agate, etc.
Agate helps keep you energized, and it is a very stabilizing stone. It is useful for when you need to summon strength, or surround yourself with physical protection.
Agate can inspire creativity -how could it not with all those beautiful patterns and colors?
Calcite
The two most common types of calcite are Clear Calcite and Orange Calcite. Optical calcite has a very unique outer appearance stemming from its nearly perfect cleavage. This means that the layers of the crystal can be peeled off in uniform sheets (although you probably shouldn’t attempt it unless you’re a geologist)!
Because calcite occurs frequently in nature, it tends to be relatively cheap and is a good option for beginners.
Calcite is a cleansing crystal at its core, as it dispels negative energies. It is useful for learning because it helps you retain information, and it can also help you come up with creative ideas.
If you’re feeling lazy and need some motivation, calcite can help give you that extra push by releasing energy blockages.
Labradorite
Labradorite, or Spectrolite, often appears as an unassuming brown or grey stone. When it hits the light at the right angle, however, it reveals a beautiful rainbow of colors!
Labradorite prices can vary depending on the seller. Higher end crystal stores have a tendency to over mark the price on them (I’ve seen small/medium pieces being sold for as much as $40), but good pieces can still be found for relatively cheap at antique or thrift stores.
Labradorite is a very functional crystal. It is good for increasing psychic awareness and intuition, and strengthening your focus.
In my personal experience, labrodorite is a very playful stone. It enjoys working with people, and has several different uses in the craft that make it an essential companion to your collection.
Aventurine
For spells involving luck or prosperity, aventurine is the go-to crystal. The most commonly used varieties are usually yellow or green.
For all the wealth aventurine helps promote, it doesn’t break the bank! This is another good crystal for those just starting their collection, as well as for people who need a little extra boost either when seeking new employment or money.
Aventurine is also known for absorbing negative geopathic energies and electromagnetic waves, making it a particularly good companion for people living in cities or sitting by a computer all day.
The most valuable pieces of aventurine (according to other collectors) are ones that have more “glitter” flecks in them. This glittery effect comes from when an extremely reflective mineral is contained within a less reflective matrix.
Selenite
If it wasn’t already obvious, selenite is one of my favorite crystals and the inspiration behind my username. I highly recommend it for any crystal collection because it is versatile and has high energy vibrations.
Selenite cleanses the stones that you put around it because of the natural healing energy it possesses. Unlike citrine, selenite is capable of clearing itself (although you should still clear and charge it when using it for spellwork anyways).
Selenite is a 1 on the Moh’s hardness scale. This makes it so fragile that your fingernail can make a decent scratch in the surface. Raw selenite is also more fragile than polished pieces.
Because of how soft it is, selenite shouldn’t be immersed in water or salt, and it should be wrapped in a soft, protective cover when being stored with other objects. I’ve noticed many stores tend to wrap it in cling film.
If you don’t have the money to get a clear quartz crystal ball for scrying, selenite crystal balls are a great (and cheaper) alternative. Some varieties can appear extremely translucent as well, which may make seeing images easier.
Selenite is a very wise stone. It possesses the same calming and loving energy as rose quartz, but packs the spiritual punch of amethyst. It is useful for aiding in meditation, accessing the higher spiritual plane, divination, and cleansing negative energies.
*Final Thoughts*
Don’t feel like you are obligated to buy crystals in order to be a successful practitioner of magick. You may discover that you don’t want to work with crystals at all in your craft, and that is perfectly fine.
When you’re out looking for crystals, get the ones that call to you. It could be as simple as feeling a connection with one when you touch it, or you consistently keep finding aspects of that crystal appearing in your life.
After you get a new crystal, always make sure to cleanse and charge it. This will make them much more effective in your craft, and ensure that negative outside energies aren’t being introduced into your environment.
Try to bond with the crystals that you own. They all have their own unique energies and personalities to offer, and they will function as better companions in your craft when you have a good relationship.
I don’t tend to buy my crystals online just because I like to walk around and touch all of them (like the annoying person that I am). However, @bekkathyst has a really great selection and fair prices if you’re looking to buy online or don’t have a mineral store near you.

“Holly Blue Agate cosplay at SaikouCon 2017”
Amazing job , can anyone give advice for a newb cosplayer I plan on cosplaying either bismuth , or sugalite ( my two fav) or Jasper for my gf . I’m 6'5 and I’m more on the muscular side ( I’m a junior on my schools varsity football team)
Thank you! I’m a newer cosplayer too, but here are a few tips that I have acquired from my own experience purchasing and creating parts for my Steven Universe cosplays. **If anyone else wants to add their own advice and experiences, feel free to do so!
First thing first is to plan/map out your cosplay, budget, and dissect the parts of the character’s design that you will need to purchase and create. By creating a plan, you will prevent buying material that you don’t need or forgetting crucial parts for your cosplay. Set a budget for yourself and stick to it as best as you can. Sometimes spending more on cosplays that you plan to wear frequently is a good idea, but for the occasional con, photoshoot, or even Halloween party, don’t push yourself to spend a fortune on your costume. In my opinion, as long as your cosplay has the silhouette and key/defining elements of the character that you are portraying, you shouldn’t have to worry if your cosplay is 100% like the character’s. Don’t be shy to interpret the character in your own way and get creative! For those on a budget, pick characters that have simpler designs and outfits. Also, choose a character that you can picture yourself dressing up as more than once so that you get the most bang for your buck. Choose cosplays that are easy to move, eat, use the restroom, and feel comfortable in. No con is fun when you’re uncomfortable. Research how other people interpreted the character and find tutorials on how they built their cosplay to help create a battle plan on how you will tackle your own cosplay project. Before going to stores or looking at online products, look around your home for clothes and supplies that can be used to create your costume (for example, I already owned blue leggings and a black turtleneck top that I then used for my Holly Blue Agate cosplay). To get the best results for finding clothes and materials online, do extensive, and I mean EXTENSIVE research on different products. I have spent many hours searching for the right color and sized clothes, finding good deals, and making sure that they will ship in time for the con that I am attending. Don’t be afraid to purchase cheaper products online. Just make sure that they aren’t see-through when they shouldn’t be. Always handle cheaper products carefully as the material(s) that they are made of may not be the most durable. When purchasing products online, look at the reviews on the item. See where people enjoyed the product and felt that it lacked in quality, especially if the comments are about the color and sizing of the product. NEVER EVER order clothes labelled “one size fits all.” For cosplaying, the most skill that you need should be knowing how to use a glue gun, being able to paint simple shapes, and have beginner knowledge of sewing where applicable. Fabric paint and glue guns can be your best friends! Don’t be shy to use clay, cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, old fabric, etc. to create a costume from scratch. I know it’s tempting to just purchase everything for your costume and wear them together, but part of the fun is creating parts for it too! In my opinion, spend the most money on the wig. A good wig can really define who your character is. Don’t worry about painting your body to look like the blue, green, purple, etc. characters we see in the show. A little make-up on your eyes, lips, and cheeks that are the same color as the gem’s skin tone should be enough (I did this for my Holly Blue cosplay). However, NEVER do black, brown, yellow, or red face! For making gemstones, I use Crayola air dry white clay. I shape the clay, give it a day to dry, then use acrylic paint to color it. You don’t even need to spend time shaping the gem’s facets. Painting the different layers and facets of a gem on a flat surface gives the illusion enough. NEVER make your cosplay last minute. Make sure everything fits and stays comfortable before the convention. No need to have an added stress the night before a con. And finally, don’t worry about what other people say about your cosplay. You crafted it! Be proud of your work! Trust me, even when your costume isn’t exactly like the character’s, people will love seeing that you are that character in the first place.

As I entered the bright white building, I heard the quiet whirring of small machines. I weaved through the museum doing my best to interpret and experience the art but couldn’t shake a feeling of familiarity. Then it hit me, I’ve seen this same artist before in NYC! Who would have guessed we would find a slice of the big apple in the small town of Marfa.

25 Coolest Things to Do in Marfa TX
We ended our West Texas Road Trip in Marfa. Before visiting, we knew very little of the area other than hearing about the artsy community and seeing Prada Marfa and El Cosmico on instagram.
Marfa truly surprised us and felt like an anomoly. It’s quaint and charming and has small town vibes, but it’s also is completely different from any small town we’ve previously seen.
We found it hard to describe, and it almost felt like the twilight zone. We expected to find eclectic desert art and instead found an art scene as sophisticated as NYC. Sometimes it felt like a small town in West Texas, and other times it felt like a neighborhood in Brooklyn.
If you’re planning a trip out to Marfa, we’ve put together a guide to help you plan your trip.

What You Need to Know Before You Visit Marfa
Like a lot of the small towns in West Texas, hours are limited. Visit between Thursday to Sunday for the best experience, but even then there’s no guarantee that all businesses will be open.
Be flexible with your schedule. Even with posted hours, some stores and restaurants may close. Some even run out of food and close once the food is out. They’ve adopted a siesta mentality and close whenever they feel like it.
The closest major airport is in El Paso (about 3 hours away). Take advantage of your location and see other surrounding sites in West Texas. Here is our road trip guide.
Renting a car is the best way to get around town. When we talked to locals and asked about Uber, they said there are only 1-2 drivers locally.
Talk to locals to find out what else is going on around town. We heard about a free concert from a bartender which was the perfect way to end the night.
Cell phone coverage can be spotty. We have T-mobile and it worked in most cases but as soon as we were out of the main area, we lost signal.
If you plan on visiting during a holiday weekend, book early. This has become a popular destination.
Marfa is in a desert climate. it gets hot during the day but chilly at night. Have layers ready. During the winter, it can snow and gets dangerous to drive.

Colonial-Style Summer Celebration
Guest Contributer: Becca Jones
Becca is the head photographer for B. Jones Photography. Check out her site here.
Vibrant Firs is a new wedding venue in Auburn, WA. It has a charming Colonial structure right by the lake, dock access, barn, gazebo, and 50 acres of land. Its exterior paint and front door design left a great impression on our first visit. As soon as we pull in the roundabout driveway, at the end of the brick path is the tiffany blue and white painted, column entrance. Along with the lake view, we immediately decide that we will be setting up a reception style table on the dock and some lounge pieces outdoor.
Along with its exterior paint and the romantic storybook setting vibe, we put together the color palette in the range of cream, periwinkle, French blue, Tiffany blue, and moss, agate green. Our design concept focus heavily on vintage, antique items, layers of fabrics, and accessorize with gold. Thus, we name our theme Colonial Fairytale. The advantage of choosing Vibrant Firs as a wedding venue is that it is very versatile. Couples can design their weddings more rustic, boho, or elegant and Vibrant Firs would be perfect in any of these settings. It also provides plenty of indoor space inside the barn in case the weather changes.
The gorgeous Vibrant Firs venue and the “Colonial Fairytale” theme both played an equal part in my design process for the calligraphy and paper pieces of this shoot. Soft blues, long calligraphy strokes, and an illustration of the venue’s iconic front door brought the suite pieces to life.
While putting together the reception table, we made the floral centerpieces smaller to showcase and blend into the gorgeous nature surrounding. We also fan out the flatwares a bit to make the place setting less formal and more homey. We layered two different type of lighter fabrics on top of the deep blue velvet table cloth and to make them jump out visually, the reception chairs are also clothed in Parchment Linette. At this point, we simple add more textures with taper candles and votives.
We like to incorporate floral design when composing for the overall concept since they are so intimately tied together. For this design, we used lots of feathery, soft texture. Our centerpieces are composed of field grown roses, Queen Anne lace, nigella, delphinium, yarrow cottage, eryngium, astilbe, and purple feather acacia. We also create two different style of bouquets, one more tender and aerial with cotton and another more exquisite with more blue floral pieces. The floral installation are set up indoor to feature the venue’s gorgeous fireplace and stairway. With our theme, we add Jasmine vines and Virginia creeper vines to build the installation structure.
Our favorite part of the table is definitely the spools of ribbons that double as place cards and add a really personalized, special finishing touches. The delicate Robin Egg Blue silk ribbons are from Stella Wolfe, the width is 0.5”, skinny enough to leave lots of blank space on the plates. Our stationery designer worked wonders on the ribbons and wrote beautiful names in calligraphy.
Olive is inspired by the nature and utilizes her home grown herbs such as rosemary to dazzle the gourmet hors d'oeuvres. Its lemony tang counterbalances a mild ricotta cheese on a floral olive oil polenta coins.
For the other much crunchier bites she creates a roast beef rainbow carrots tartlet to pair with ceremonial champagne toast. Blue and pale purple hues are her personal favorite. It creates a sense of elegance and turns the romantic elements more sensual. Blackberry and purple carrots were used as accent pieces to complements meat dishes.
Jan creates a two-tier wedding cake featuring a smooth color block design with a blue watercolor top-tier and a center cascade of pure, hand-piped buttercream flowers inspired by the lake setting. Every aspect of the cake focuses on the simplicity of a traditional wedding cake while also capturing the unique detail and placements present in the buttercream flowers.
For the menu design, I drew inspiration from reading by candlelight in the colonial era; the wax remnants of a romantic, soft white wax seal are suspended in time alongside delicate calligraphy paired with a classic typeface. Finally, a love note and dusty blue vow book: perfect heirloom pieces for the romantic bride.

What I Wish Everyone Knew About Geode Canvas Art | geode canvas art
The activity and spirit of artisan Chris Lundy consistently reflect the adulation he has for his home in the mountains. The paintings he creates in his Breckenridge flat reflect article abundant larger: his adulation for the conception as a whole. As a adept and innovator of the Modern Illuminist technique, Lundy’s assignment is all about reflection.

The cogitating affection in Lundy’s assignment comes from the actuality that his pieces are anywhere from a distinct band to a dozen layers deep. According to adolescent artisan Leszek Forczek Modern Illuminist painters are, “… bent to actualize paintings in which there is a faculty of amplitude developed through the sequencing of color. Secondly, they able luminosity, or at times an beaming opalescence, which glowed from aural the color.” This altogether describes Lundy’s work, as band aloft band of blush glistens and refracts from the canvases he works on. Every Lundy allotment changes badly with the bulk of lighting apparent on the painting, giving his assignment a chameleon like aftereffect as it interacts with the ablaze in the allowance in which it hangs.
Much of Lundy’s afflatus comes from the universe. He was fatigued to the conception from an aboriginal age, anytime aback he begin himself absent amidst the images he apparent in a book of photographs taken by the Hubble Telescope. As such, his assignment frequently resembles scenes from alien amplitude and reveals the allure he finds in the sky. The mountains of Breckenridge are a connected brood for Lundy as well, with abounding of his works astute abstractions of the adorableness that Summit County has to offer. Lundy confused from the Gulf Coast and acclimatized in Breckenridge a little added than a year ago. Watching the afflatus begin in his assignment alteration from the ocean to the mountains has been fascinating. The cement that holds Lundy’s accumulating calm

Afer making these agate slice cookies not too long ago, I became a bit obsessed with geodes and agates. I watched countless videos of people making beautiful geode cakes. I even watched people paint agate slices on all sorts of things. Since geode cakes have sort of been perfected (I mean, come on, this is just ridiculously amazing), I set out on trying to make agate cupcake toppers. These are the things I think about, guys. Not about world peace or solving the debt crisis…how to make a candy agate to put on top of a cupcake.
These are the things I think about, guys. Not about world peace or solving the debt crisis (I’m just assuming there is one). I think about how to make a candy agate to put on top of a cupcake…
It took several attempts and quite a few burned fingers, but I finally found a method that worked the best.
In my first attempt, I tried crushing candies like I have seen other people do online. That worked out okay, but they didn’t seem all that realistic. For my second attempt, I used isomalt, which is a fancy form of sugar that a lot of bakers use. Again, it worked okay, but it still wasn’t the effect I was looking for. I also ran out of isomalt, so it may have eventually worked for me, but I couldn’t keep experimenting.
In the end, it was plain old sugar that worked best for me! I boiled water and sugar until it reached that “hard crack” temperature, then I dyed it a bunch of different colors and layered the colors together.
Here, I’ll just show you!
The very first thing I did was to make molds for my agates out of tin foil. I made them all different shapes with rough, uneven edges. I sprayed each mold down with a bit of baking spray so that the sugar wouldn’t stick to the foil.
Next, I worked on the sugar. I boiled together the sugar, corn syrup, and water until it reached 300 degrees. Then I poured it into individual silicon muffin cups (which came in super handy!) and tinted each one a different color. Some I made a dark shade, others I made a very light shade. I also left a couple plain.
Keep in mind, if you decide to make these yourself, that the sugar does start to cool and harden relatively quickly. Each time I made an agate, I reheated the colors I was working with in the microwave until they were easily pourable. If they are too hard, not only will they not pour very easily but they won’t create those concentric rings of color.
To make the agate slice, I poured one of the colors into the center of the foil mold. The candy should be hot enough that it starts to fill the surface. Then I poured a darker shade of the color into the center. I followed that with either the clear or light shade of the same color and alternated a couple of times until candy filled the mold.
While the candy was still hot, I sprinkled some very coarse clear sanding sugar right into the middle and used a toothpick to press them into the candy.
The candy itself cools in just a matter of minutes. Once they were completely hardened and cool to the touch, I peeled the foil away from the candy to reveal one beautiful agate cupcake topper!
For the cupcake itself, I kept it pretty simple. I didn’t want to take anything away from the candy agate. I spread on a bit of buttercream frosting, then dunked it into a bowl of the coarse sanding sugar and stuck the agate right on top.
Maybe I had lowered my expectations after my previous two failed attempts, but I was actually a bit blown away by how cool they turned out. I love how the colors flow together and the light can shine right through them.
While they don’t look exactly like agate slices, they definitely look like some sort of really awesome gem or geode. I could definitely see these topping cupcakes for lots of different occasions. I made my favorite vanilla cupcakes with my favorite buttercream frosting for these to keep it simple. But you could make any flavor you like. I think people will be so impressed with the cupcake toppers, they won’t even care what kind of cake is underneath! [show_shopthepost_widget id=”2835175″]
