Nightmare frontier (Loran) geologic interpretation
Alright, here I am to talk about another detail I noticed while replaying Bloodborne! It has more to do with well the geology of the nightmare frontier and from what it's based on in real life. I like analysis and trying to understand those in video game! But also might bue because I'm a technician geologist too XD Still I will try to stay simple and short.
So The Nightmare frontier in the Nightmare. This optional zone you can unlock thanks to Patches! And where we fight the Amygdala to obtained the Loran's chalice.
Notes : the nightmares are in layers. Mensis nightmare is on top then the frontier, under the fishing hamlet with the boats. And under the hamlet the hunter's nightmare/Yharnam of the dlc. For the one who didn't knew.
Notes 2 : The nightmare frontier is probably a nightmare originating from the region where Loran is (the out place area and the Loran chalice are goos indicator). You know that Pthumerian civilisation far from pthumeru & Yharnam who all become beasts... But if you are into the lore you probably know about Loran and all.
So in the frontiers we can find those strange stone hexagonal columns around :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well it is a real geologic structures! Also named volcanic (basalts) columns, organ pipes etc (orgues volcaniques in French)
Tumblr media
Volcanic columns of Panska skala. Source image : https://planet-terre.ens-lyon.fr/ressource/orgues-volcaniques.xml,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, how it's formed? Well it is a bit complex but I will try to explain simply. You see those are formed from (effusive) volcanism (don't cofound with magmatic plutonism). You see when a volcano create really liquid lava and don't explode it's effusive. The lava cooled fast on the surface (huge thermic difference with the air or water) and don't crystallised, it often formed basalts (this black rock without minerals visible) or similars stone (can be andesite too in that case or even diorite. It's the same "family").
Those columns are not directly made on the surface but meters under the first couch of lava or they can be formed in magmatic veins that came from a magmatic chamber (in the ground) but cooled way faster than the chamber: it can create those or dyke or sills for exemple/ A magmatic chamber who cooled of will be crystallised on the contrary and take a lot of time! (Thousand if not millions of year) Still it's seems those columns take years or century to become rocks. Still it is "fast" on a geological levels.
Apparently with specific conditions temperature it create this hexagonal columns. It is also similar when clay who became dry and cracked on the ground if you prefer.
Tumblr media
Anyway those volcanic columns can be found in many places! Europe, Africa, Asia, America etc There are usually millions of years old and we can see them thanks to erosions of the more tender rocks around it.
The first pic I show are at 80/100km north to Prague in Czech Republic. And You know Bloodborne is a bit more based on easter Europe so 👀
Anyway I think this is very cool the devs inspire themself from those! Very Interesting!
SO what it says about Loran region and Bloodborne world then ?🤔 Well I'm not sure but it's sure is very ancient geologic formation and even in XIX century 2 big theories fought about geology so it sure could be see as specials for old civilisation! Especially in link with old great ones or smt. And maybe Loran could be closer to Yharnam than we think.
ALSO
You see those weird ?ball rocks? in the all the nightmare area? really remind me of pillow lava. You know when lava pierce through the ocean and cold really fast
Tumblr media
Ok and I'm not sure for Yharnam or Cainhurst geology but pretty sure the fishing hamlet is volcanic stone too. Why? Well the huge massifs black stones and the BLACK SAND, like in Hawaii ! Or in Iceland. Volcanic region with huge volcanic activity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black sand always means it came from volcanic rocks or that it's rich in iron minerals for exemple.

You know what, here, have my "Why I love ORAS" essay I wrote for Playwriting class. Presenting:
How Pokemon Rotted my Brain (In a Good Way)
I’ve always been a fan of video games. Ever  since I was really little and watching my dad play games I was too young to play on his Playstation 2 or XBox 360, and then later when I was playing games like Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman on those same systems and later ones like the Playstation 3. But there’s one system, and one game, that have stuck with me to this very day. Not just in a metaphorical sense, in a literal sense.
To call the Nintendo 2DS a toy would be inaccurate. Such a complex device of computational power, all that fun and joy packed into that little tiny system. No, it was much, much more than a toy. It was, and still is, my most prized possession.
I don’t remember when I received it. I remember that before I got it I would play 3DS games on my Dad’s 3DS and that when I got it, I used my own money to pay for it and that I got it instead of the 3DS because it was 30 dollars cheaper and they played the same games (for reference, a 2DS is the same system as the 3DS without the 3D function).
There are many games I played on that 2DS, almost all of them near and dear to me. Kirby Triple Deluxe, Kirby Planet Robobot (a personal favorite of mine), Pokemon Y, Kid Icarus Uprising, and many others. But one particular game has endured with me to this day. A game I’ve replayed time and time again, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, released in 2014.
While my introduction to the Pokemon franchise was Pokemon Y, the game that made me love it was Alpha Sapphire. Along with its counterpart, Pokemon Omega Ruby, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire served as a remake of the Generation 3 games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire (released in 2003 in Japan and 2004 in US). Pokemon Alpha Sapphire took me on an incredible Journey through the Tropical Hoenn Region, collecting Gym Badges and putting a stop to the evil machinations of Team Aqua.
Particularly close to my heart, is the story. I’m sure a lot of you are quietly scoffing at the idea of a Pokemon Game having an engaging story. Especially a remake of Ruby and Sapphire whose main antagonists’ goals are famously “Expand the Land” and “Expand the Ocean” respectively. And if you’re one of those people who’s scoffing all I have to say is, go play Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (or any Pokemon game post Gen 3, really) or, if you’ve already played them, replay them and pay close attention.
If you do, you’ll get to experience the tale of a man whose given up on humanity to the point where he’s determined the only way to fix things is to start over. The story of a man whose dedication to humanity’s progress means he is willing to endanger the world to provide more land to live on and try to fix overpopulation. The woes of a man who had power and riches but is crushed beneath the burden of responsibility which he refuses to share or pass off to another, attempting to carry it all alone, even when he would rather be pursuing his true passion for geology. The tragic tale of a woman who was raised for one purpose, one sole reason to exist, but whose destiny ultimately passed her by. And many more.
When I first played it I didn’t quite absorb all this, being 10 years old, but now, many years later, the story and characters of this game impact me deeply. They influence the stories I tell, and the characters I write. I even write my own stories about them, continuing their character arcs or retelling their stories in my own way. So, yeah, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, the best Pokemon game, I’m not taking criticism.

Dr stone characters as types of TikTokers
Warning: Contains manga spoilers for new characters! You can skip those you don’t know!

Ginro

Kinro
- beautiful scenery shots - only has a few videos, mostly nature and places he went to with his family and friends - “top 5 places you must visit this summer” - secretive about his account, no one except Ginro knows about it - 7.9k followers - after a while he switched to making ASMR?? which gained him fame overnight and now has …. - 45k followers (Ginro’s current worst fear being Kinro surpassing his own follower count)

YOURE RIGHT AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT
INFODUMP/RAMBLE UNDER THE CUT
Listen not to say that ALL video game analysis videos are better that school lectures(because let’s be honest you don’t watch ALL of the analysis videos unless you’ve hit hardcore hyperfix and don’t have anything else to watch, 99% of the time you’re ONLY watching the best videos in terms of quality, writing, etc), however it’s definitely interesting how much i DREAD lectures versus how much i ADORE video game analysis videos
Like programming is fun to me... when it’s relatively easy. But the thing is- I like walking into a classroom and spending a day learning about... idk how machine learning works. But... Spending a whole day learning boring terms and going into- idk discreet math or whatever BORES ME. Whereas this video on machine learning actually is a really great introduction to how machine learning works while doing so in a way that anyone can understand regardless of technical background.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this, both with myself and others. I HATED Physics 1 and 2 at college, but I LOVE watching science videos about colored flames or geology or black hole physics and whatnot. And I always see comments like “This taught me more than my introduction to X class in Y minutes” And the reason I think this is the case for so many people?
Videos are typically short(it’s rare to find ones more than 90 minutes) and most of all: VISUALLY ENGAGING. You often see animations or footage of things going on which ENGAGE the viewer rather than the 300TH SLIDE OF THE 50TH POWERPOINT I’VE SEEN THIS WEEK. They can also be taken at the viewer’s pace! A viewer can hit “watch later”, pause and return later, adjust volume and playback speed, etc. The pace in which the viewer learns is controlled by the VIEWER. Not to mention there’s no homework or anything: the viewer can stop the learning process whenever they choose. Learning when/where the viewer wants to learn versus when the viewer is told when to learn is crucial in separating passion versus academia.
It’s also the case of passion for learning vs obligation to learning. For instance, I was listening to the Halo video while playing Age of Calamity. I was still listening, retaining information, and pausing my game if there was an instance of the video I wanted to pay close attention to, but overall it was my background noise. And if there were parts I missed due to not paying attention... there’s no penalty. I don’t come out of it any worse than I went into it. If I don’t pay attention to... say, a class about algebra, though? Well, I miss information that will be on exams and homework, which will affect my grade, which could make me fail the class, so on and so forth: there’s a negative consequence to not paying attention. Which makes free-time-video-essay-watching more relaxed and carefree, because there’s no penalty for doing it “wrong”.
Not to say that Academia is wrong in all aspects, no. I can watch as many videos as I want about game design, but the interest will ONLY be an interest if that’s all I do. To actually get into game design I’d have to learn writing, programming, level design, character design, art design, just to name a FEW things. So watching an hour-long analysis on Ocarina of Time won’t do nearly as much for me as going to school or taking training courses if I wanted to go into video game design... However, it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t want that as a career, but keeps it as an INTEREST. I still learn key things to improve my writing, character design, etc... but not as rigorous as a typical academic setting.
tl;dr: video essays are wonderful introductions to whatever interests a viewer may have without the stressful and rigorous setting of academia, and are very accessible and easy for viewers to engage in their interests in a way that challenges their critical thinking and gives them access to an introduction into that field if they want to possibly pursue said field further, either through hobbies in their own time or full-time careers

March 2021
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is with great regret and sadness that we announce History Center Board Member, supporter, and dear friend Jackie Cooley passed away On February 9.  She had been a Board member since 2016, but she and her husband Counte had been involved with the History Center for much longer, especially in relation to the White Path Cabin. Along with Counte she had operated Electronic Sales Company for 23 years. She was incredibly active in the community, including as co-founder of For Her Glory, an organization that helps cancer patients in need in medical assistance.  Jackie always had a smile, an encouraging word, and a sharp insight, and she will be truly missed.

CJ Payne: Digital Studio Intern
My name is CJ Payne, I’m a recent graduate of the University of North Georgia. I got my bachelors’ degree in Film & Digital Media with a minor in Graphic Design. I’m passionate about bringing stories to life through editing videos. I love working on documentaries because true stories have much more of a lasting impact with their message, in my opinion. I am interning at the Northeast Georgia History Center because I want to gain more experience working as a video editor. I enjoy learning about the lifestyles of people in past time periods especially those from cultures other than my own like the Cherokee nation. There’s much to learn from people living in a different era than mine.
I love spending time on set with friends, watching movies, and hiking. I dabble with outdoor photography and take way too many pictures of my dog. I also love to read and take my dog for long walks.

Andrews Gless: Digital Studio Intern
Raised in North Georgia, I fell in love with music and movies at a young age. From  action movies to historical biopics and classic hip-hop to opera, music and movies are something that I have always loved. History is very special to me. Apart from being one of my favorite subjects in school, I love learning about different figures and events through time. There is always a lesson about life that can be learned through the study of history.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Film and Digital Media with a Production Concentration from the University of North Georgia, where I was able to work on several different award winning films throughout Georgia and the South, (A Devil in God's Country, Dead Winter,  Halfway). I wanted to continue to hone my editing and production skills. The History Center offers the unique opportunity of being able to help produce different types of content for all ages with a  variety of professionals. I hope that I will be able to assist in bringing more stories of North Georgia and the United States to life. I love good stories, great food and movies of all types. I'm an amateur vinyl collector, avid gamer and I can always be found sharing a laugh with my close friends and family.

Tag thing 2
I was tagged by @judal-is-my-spirit-animal (again thx fam i love doing these things)
What’s something you ever wanted to do?
I’ve always wanted to make some kind of meeting with my internet friends, or something like a roadtrip with some of them... I’d really just like to stay with them irl. I love them dearly and they’re very important people to me.
Do you like that crunchy part of the pizza or do you not eat that?
I don’t like the crunchy part, so I almost never eat it.
Do you have a song you never get sick of? If so, what is it?
I have many of them actually. Maybe sometimes I stop listening to them because I find new ones, but I Always come back to them. Some of them are Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys (which I’m listening to right now), Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz, Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke, composed by ZUN for the game Touhou 8, and some others. It would take to much to list all of them lmao, these are the first that came to mind.
What question do you hate to answer?
“Why don’t you get a boyfriend?”, which my mum Always asks. I’ve told her a thousand times that I am not interested in anybody I know, or in being in a relationship for that matter. She just doesn’t listen though.
What is the most memorable class you have ever taken?
Art class this year was pretty good, because the professor was passionate about it. Also philosopy (which is my favourite subject).
Describe something that happened to you and you still find no explanation for it.
Honestly nothing comes to mind. I always try to find an explanation for everything that happens, so if there was something that, for some reason, I couldn’t find an explanation for, I would definitely remember it.
Have you ever had any surgeries? If so, which ones?
I’ve never had a surgery.
What is you favourite commercial?
I don’t like commercials rip
When was the last time you went to the cinema? What film did you watch?
I think it was last year and I went with my school. We saw The Book Thief. I really liked it
What is the longest you’ve been without sleeping?
These days I stay up until 4:45AM, but then I force myself to go to sleep because staying up until dawn would make me very anxious for some reason
What was the first thing you thought today after waking up?
Probably something like “damn my eyes still feel tired”
 What inspires you?
Space, music, fictional characters.
What song holds the most meaning to you?
I usually am not interested much in the meaning of a song. I usually prefer songs without lyrics.
Anyone you like?
A friend of mine, but I’m not really sure. It kinda depends on the day and even if I told him and he would say he likes me back, I’m not sure how/if our relationship would change.
Favourite thing about the world?
Nature (in pretty much every sense of the word: biology, geology, meteorology etc.)
Favourite thing about yourself?
Uuuh... Creativity? I don’t really like myself that much lmao
Which fictional character do you realte to the most?
Noriaki Kakyoin from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures (obviously lol)
Favourite video game? And if it applies, favourite class?
Spore
Reason to smile?
Funny jokes, my friends, my passions.
Now the questions from @judal-is-my-spirit-animal:
If you could meet any fictional character and spend a day hanging out with them (platonically,) who would you choose and why?
Kakyoin definitely 100%, where do i sign
What’s your favorite season?
Summer
Do you consider yourself an artist and if yes, what art forms do you like to work on?
I guess I can consider myself an artist... But a super-beginner, and I don’t even exercise constantly lmao. Anyway for now I draw on paper but I’d like to learn how to draw digitally.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen someone do in public?
I remember I saw a guy dancing randomly in the middle of the sidewalk lmao
Do you prefer pants, skirts, or dresses?
Pants for life
What’s your natural hair color and if you dye your hair, what colors do you like to dye it?
Natural hair colour is brown, and I’d love to dye them blue. Not completely though, only like some locks
Tell me one random fact about yourself that not a lot of people know about.
I have a birthmark (it’s a little red spot) on the heel of my right foot
Questions from me:
1) Favourite music genre?
2) Favourite colour?
3) Favourite type(s) of characters?
4) What’s your alignment? (Lawful good, chaotic neutral, etc.)
5) Would you accept the gift of immortality? Why?
I tag @scyide, @dance-dance-rebellion, @mamabirdkars and @reizomahboy! (Again, don’t feel obligated to do this if you don’t want! It’s okay <3)
