Rayllum - Moon and Sky
For #rayllum month 2024, last day: "You're the moon in my sky"
I decided to write a poem about Rayllum entitled "Moon and Sky". :3 You can listen to it above and read below.
I decided to post a day early, because I think by tomorrow no one will be in control of their brain any more.xD
⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆Moon and Sky⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆
She is the moon
and he is the sky.
He holds her steadily,
but with all the space that she needs.
She lights him up,
creating a bright path in his darkness.
Although she may hide,
and become a traveler cloaked in shadow -
she is never truly gone from him,
for he will always carry her.
Because she is the wind beneath his wings,
she makes his eyes sparkle
like moon opals on the ocean.
She rides on a silver barque
through a sea of clouds,
learning how to navigate
and staring in awe
at the stars in his soul.
Whether she is new,
or half,
or full -
Her love does not wane.
Whether he is cloudy,
or rainy,
or serene -
his love does not change.
They are bound
In a sacred dance,
ethereal and ancient;
moving together through all uncertainty,
for all eternity.
For their love is a gravity
beyond magic.

What I’d Give to Thank You
I had to post a poem on this day of thanks to express my gratitude for this amazing man who’s changed my life. ❤️ Happy Thanksgiving to everyone; I am so grateful for all the wonderful friends I’ve made here! 😘
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My dearest Elvis, you’ve blessed my life more than I can say
I often wonder what I’d give if I ever had the chance to repay
For all the beautiful ways you gave yourself to your fans
And the delicacy with which you handled all the hearts in your hands
Each time you were presented with a picture, a toy, a gift at any time and place
The most genuine of smiles would light up your face
“It’s beautiful,” you’d say, “thanks hon, I love it so much”
Never would a fan feel like their love for you wasn’t enough
There were maybe times you were tired, frustrated, focused on your own endeavors
But you always gave love to your fans, knowing they’d cherish the moment forever
The loving connection with your fans stays strong even to this day
If I’d had that chance to see you, what would I give you, what would I say?
I know a hug and kiss would make my heart just melt
I could whisper something sexy that would make you blush and adjust your belt
There are just so many things I’d want to do and say while you’re in my view
But the most important thing would be to make known my love for you
Love not just for your talent and looks and the way your voice could take me on a ride
My love is deepest when I think about the person you are inside
To ensure you could feel this love with every fiber of your being
I’d give to you a book of my poems filled with every single feeling
Whenever your insecurities hit and you started feeling low
It would make my heart swell to think what opening this book would help you know
That I see your sweetness, your kindness, your soft tender side
And yes, even all the things that you might have thought you needed to hide
You’d know that you’re talented and funny and sexy and smart
What I’d give to thank you for sharing yourself are these love poems from my heart.
My Poems for Elvis

This one specifically I can never get over just. The atmosphere is so. It's the tenderness of it all. The way Eichi holds him the way Wataru is fully trusting Eichi to not lose him and keep him steady the way Eichi Looks at him the way they are fully in their own little world right now the way they are just having fun before the big show just. The tenderness and strangely intimate warmness of it all gets to me.

Whatever you do, don't think about how, in Alex, Henry has a safe person, an interested person, an amused person and a person he loves and who loves him back to rant about Byron's poetry to 🥺

2, 6,21 and 24 for the ask game 😇
hihi! 2. three last songs you listened to: ik bagal, by piyush mishra, a song ive recently been obsessed with (could only find the eng trans from a vid thats also a cover here), koi by gen hoshino(!!) and cobalt by mob choir
6. three songs you wish you could erase from history (because they’re terrible): im v bad at remembering stuff i like in the first place afsh apologies for the cop out but im pretty sure ive either never disliked a song sm to wish its inexistence, and if i did, certainly dont remember it anymore
21. three songs of your childhood: a little difficult a little fun! ill say aashiyan from barfi, half bcs this album and all its songs r still my favorite years later (movie too!!) and half bcs i have way too nice memories of performing this song as a kid at an event at dad's work and getting complimented a lot (it was aided tho, im sure, by my front teeth missing). second would be ae mere zohra jabeen, a veeery old classic bollywood song, and v much beloved to me both when i was tiny and straining to catch my ma's radio during hw and now when i can add it to all my playlists. third!! raabta by shreya ghoshal, a song that annoys me a lot now simply bcs ive heard it >2000 times bcs it was such a (deserved) rage when it came out for a few yrs
24. three favourite old songs: tere naam! by alka yagnik (listened to a newish cover, fell in love, found its original version, fell sm in love!!) id again mention ae mere zohra jabeen by manna dey bcs i never get over how sweet and cute of an old song it is. third, kaheen dur jab din dhal jaye, movie anand bcs heyy its lyrics, i really love whats it abt!!
im not surprised its just wholly old bollywood bcs thats what majority of kids in india grow up on, either by their parents love for it, or being a kid in the era itself. plus! i could never rec old bollywood enough, its either so catchy that u cheer the love its talking abt, or so poetic that u..cheer the love its talking abt, half of the time managing to be both. not to mention the iconic voices with legions of songs to their names. thank u for asking, i had sm fun!!!

@yummysuika @ospreywhite I really appreciate your translation work; can you explain more about shichen timekeeping to me? Because I know a tiny bit of modern Mandarin Chinese, but I can't recognize the shichens as the zodiac animals:
Zi (I don't know "rat", so I actually can't make any argument here.)
Chou (I don't know "ox", but I reasonably could have expected "niu" for "cow".)
Yin (I know "tiger" as "hu".)
Mao (I don't know "rabbit", but to me "mao" is "cat".)
Chen (I know "dragon" as "long".)
Si (I don't know "snake", but now I find it interesting that it sounds like death, like snakes could be seen as evil in Chinese culture similar to how they are seen in the Christian world.)
Wu (I know "horse" as "ma".)
Wei (I know "sheep/goat" as "yang".)
Shen (I don't know "monkey", but I would have expected "Sun" or "Wu" or "Kong" because of "Monkey King".)
You (I know "rooster/chicken" as " ji".)
Xu (I know "dog" as "gou".)
Hai (I don't know "pig/boar" unless "pork" and "pig" are the same "siu".)
I tried asking my parents, but they just starting talking about how the Chinese zodiac is actually a 60-year cycle with the 12 animals and the 5 elements. So are these shichen names the "Pre-Han dynasty semi-descriptive terms"? Is it kind of like the difference between "midday" and "noon" in English? The former is a "descriptor", the latter is a "name", but they "mean" the same thing?
(I tried checking the etymology for "noon" on dictionary.com, so to be fair "ninth hour" is a descriptor, but in Modern English it's not really recognizable as such and so for the sake of my shichen question, I'm calling "noon" a "name".)
Or is this another language/dialect or due to the evolution of language (changing words and pronunciations)?
I was also looking up the Dragon Boat Festival being on the unluckiest day of the year, and it says, "The Chinese name of the festival is pronounced differently in different Chinese languages. Duanwu (端午) literally means 'starting horse'—i.e., the first "horse day" of the month according to the Chinese zodiac." so I was able to get the exact character for "wu". I think it's interesting that Wikipedia says "literally ... horse" but putting 午 into Google Translate yields "midday, noonday, seventh earthly branch, 11 a.m.-1 p.m." It's unfortunate that Wikipedia only says "different Chinese languages" for "Duanwu" instead of specifying them or time periods, but I appreciate it listing different romanizations by country for Cantonese.
Would you say there's any pattern to Chinese writers or English translators using the above terms vs. using "hour/time/head/body/tail of the (insert zodiac animal here)"? Like if one sounds better for a historical fantasy setting, or choosing to use the pinyin in English instead of translating to not be translating literally? ETA: I should have gotten onto a computer sooner. I asked my parents and then you guys because searching "shichen" in Wikipedia just resulted in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_units_of_measurement. But further digging took me to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Chinese_timekeeping. I'll probably get answers there (Maybe I'll even be able to explain to my dad why he was thinking of ten stems and not matching mathematically with "60 is from 12 times 5, not 10 times 6" when he was trying to lecture on the 60-year cycle for the Chinese zodiac, lol.), so my apologies for bothering you. I'd still appreciate your thoughts on what was formerly the last paragraph about writing and translation choices!
#Chinese#Mandarin#language#writing#translation#timekeeping#shichens#Chinese zodiac#I think language is so cool and I am loving applying my interest to Chinese#Step aside English and Spanish and other Western languages#Also I am sadder for my parents that I haven't learned either of their dialects and I'm wondering about dialects dying out in China like ho#foreign languages die out in diaspora as immigrant generations increase#or like the formal eradication and reintroduction of languages like Hebrew and Welsh#Also me trying to flex my minimal Mandarin skills while reading needs to be taken with a grain of salt#I know just enough to hang myself (if even that much)#It's one thing to infer from context that a cardinal direction or number was untranslated in a name#But I was so wrong trying to figure out “Ballad of Sword and Wine” vs “Qiang Jin Jiu”#I was like I don't know “ballad” but “sing/song” is “chang/chang ge” so maybe the lower vocab word is used for multiple words and/or change#pronunciation slightly or the higher vocab word happens to be similar in pronunciation#maybe “jin” is a different spelling/pronunciation for “sword” as “jian” and of course “jiu” is “wine/alcohol”#But no when I did more digging and found fan translation notes and the Chinese characters even though the fan translation is gone#it turns out the English title is a figurative/interpretive title translation instead of a literal one#When I have the spoons I should retry finding the Chinese Wikipedia page for Li Bai's poem and plugging the poem into Google Translate#and attempting poetry analysis. I'm already having Thoughts about the title and the first book#not even the whole story#isn't available#I just love books so much and it's so cool how someone chooses the title for a story

Before You Were Mine
- Dame Carol Ann Duffy (1955-p.)
I’m ten years away from the corner you laugh on
with your pals, Maggie McGeeney and Jean Duff.
The three of you bend from the waist, holding
each other, or your knees, and shriek at the pavement.
Your polka-dot dress blows round your legs. Marilyn.
~
I’m not here yet. The thought of me doesn’t occur
in the ballroom with the thousand eyes, the fizzy, movie tomorrows
the right walk home could bring. I knew you would dance
like that. Before you were mine, your Ma stands at the close
with a hiding for the late one. You reckon it’s worth it.
~
The decade ahead of my loud, possessive yell was the best one, eh?
I remember my hands in those high-heeled red shoes, relics,
and now your ghost clatters toward me over George Square
til I see you, clear as scent, under the tree,
with its lights, and whose small bites on your neck, sweetheart?
~
Cha cha cha! You’d teach me the steps on the way home from Mass,
stamping stars from the wrong pavement. Even then
I wanted the bold girl winking in Portobello, somewhere
in Scotland, before I was born. That glamorous love lasts
where you sparkle and waltz and laugh before you were mine.

✒️ please!!
Send me a ✒️ and I'll pick a poem I think you'd like
After flipping through my notebooks I decided to go with my first instinct for you, which was "A Toast to the Alchemists" by Laura Gilpin. This poem hasn't been published online officially, so they're aren't a ton of sites that have it that I could find with a quick Google search. However I've attatched photos of a reddit post with it along with my version in my journal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I picked this poem because of its themes of time and the passage of time, as well as magic and giving emotional significance to the most mundane and clinical of things (atoms and elements). In other words, taking magic from the world around us, especially through a lens usually seen as lacking wonder or whimsy. Also vibes, I mainly did it based on vibes.
Some other poems I considered in my search/additional recommendations are listed under the cut:
If you liked the writing of this poem, and haven't read it already (or have) I definitely recommend "The Two-Headed Calf" by Laura Gilpin. It's by the same author and is her most famous poem and is fairly well known and also soooooo good. So good.
Poems with similar themes:
Poems with similar themes to "A Toast to the Alchemists" are
"Dusting" by Marilyn Nelson 💘 (literally cried to this. To be fair it was 10 minutes after I finished the HDM finale so it was mainly because of that but still. Great poem.)
"The Sciences Sing a Lullabye" by Albert Goldbarth
"Ozymandias" by Percy Bysshe Shelley (90% sure you've read this one its the time theme but inverted and it's great if you haven't)
Rejected picks/Poems that gave me Anu vibes (many for no particular reason):
Poems by Ted Kooser for some reason??? NO idea why they're very different from the ones above but some of my faves are "Selecting a Reader", "In a Country Cemetery in Iowa", "The Constellation Orion" and "Flying by Night" (I'm v much questioning this pick now but I'll keep it up here just in case)
Honestly a bunch of random unrelated stuff was popping out at me ("Listen" by Miller Williams, "Cartoon Physics, Part 1" by Nick Flynn, "Snow" by David Berman) and like a million billion more which I all got from the same anthology (Poetry 180, edited by Billy Collins) so if you want to read a bunch more poetry, based on vibes alone, I'd say look for the book, the website, or the sequel. The poems from that book aren't too similar to the one above but it's really one of two books I generally recommend people right off the bat (it was my lit teachers favorite lol) because it's meant to get young adults and teens into poetry and introduce contemporary poetry in general. Idk how much poetry you've read whatever but even if you aren't new to it it's still a good compilation of late 90s/early 00s poetry that makes you think but isn't super long/totally incomprehensible
Anyways that got WAY longer than I anticipated or anyone probably wanted but poetry is an obsession of mine and recommending poetry is much more complicated and harder that it looks, even for the people you know best in the whole world AFTER interviewing their opinions on poetry, not to mention how difficult it would be for internet friends on tumblr. But anyways there's a couple poems, I got the vibes as close as I could with the poems I had on file. (Although i do feel like I'm missing something big 🤔) Anyways thanks for the ask Anu! Hope you thought my pick was alright!
#and please for the love of god dont feel pressured to read ANYTHING on here i spend hours and hours reading poems so when i rattle off names#like that its very much me bouncing along like a frog eating skittles hopping from poem to poem to poem#based on vague vibes and feelings#also also also i already knew this when i made this ask game BUT. recommending poetry is like trying to juggle with your eyes closed because#you just KNOW you just KNOW there is a group of perfect fall in love poems out there but theres a million factors you have to take into#account to find them. like theres theme theres rhyme theres rhythm theres style theres readability/directness#and you have to try and predict someones opinions on all of that while also trying to gauge their level of patience on topics like#age of poem clarity use of standard language and spelling experimental features and line breaks#when a use of any of those they dont like can turn them off a poem entirely#like we were asoue fans together so youd probably like something with ambiguity and could tolerate a more classical look#BUT then comes in the length factor and also a bit clarity plus we have to remember theme and i cant think of any poems that fit that idea#with a theme you would like that i would feel comfortable recommending (because some poems are good but also difficult)#and i LOVE difficult poems theyre my besties but i always hate them during the first 3 reads at least and who has time for that if you dont#have poetry brain disease like i do#anyways. thats a very long way of saying. i tricked you into asking me to ramble abt poetry mwahahahahahahaha#also if anyone out there feels like theyre someone who rambles a lot about their interests to others and can at times feel a little guilty#abt that the poem “To The Sea” by Anis Mojgani talks a bit about that from an outsider pov#blah#poetry tag#answered#jacobsnicket
