I have two skeins of fuzzy black yarn that I’ve tried making clothing with multiple times over the last year with no luck because of how thick it is but last night I started following a crochet balloon sleeve shrug tutorial on YouTube and it’s coming along soooooo nicely already omg I’m gonna put lil cat ears on the hood when I’m done eEeeEEEEEE it’s gonna be so warm n cozy n cute /ᐠ •ヮ• マ Ⳋ

My maternal grandmother could crochet.

Nothing complicated. Basic granny squares and double crochet, but she was the one in the family who made blankets for her kids and grandchildren. Dementia hit in her nineties but she still remembered how to make granny squares and made dozens. I asked her for one last blanket but by that point the dementia had taken how to join the squares. They were stacked in piles around the dining room table and when she went into care, into a plastic box for storage.

When she died, I asked for them. By that point I could crochet but didn't know how to join, and figured, someday, I'd learn.

It's at least a decade later. I'm the one who makes blankets for my nephews, for my cousin's children, for pregnant coworkers. Last year I made seven blankets, three for Project Linus, the rest for family and a friend. I can follow crochet charts, filet crochet, do clusters, fans, basic lace, amigurumi.

The world, as is its wont, is on fire. Tonight, I have opened the plastic container for the first time in a decade. I'm sorting them into piles by color. I know now how to look at them and see where her memory slipped or areas I'll need to repair. There's no printed pattern but if I need more I have the skills to copy the pattern.

Each square is 5 inches. Blanket size for Project Linus is 40x60. I'll see how many people I can give her last crochet legacy to.

manta ray i crocheted for my girlfriend's birthday :) he's a very comfy pillow with a nice weight and squishiness. made from cotton yarn and stuffed with down + cotton fabric.

i made the pattern myself with inspiration from this pattern for the overall structure :)

Quilter's Dilemma

A phenomenon I made up where you have a talent that takes so much time to produce something, that you can't sell it anymore. There's a market for handmade quilts, obviously, they're beautiful and warm and wonderful, but no one would be willing to pay the amount of money that is required to properly compensate the artist.

I don't quilt, but the raw materials to make a couple of pairs of mittens is $70 for some nice wool. But the hours required to make them is roughly two seasons of Criminal Minds, and some Doctor Who episodes with my family. Those are 45 minute episodes. Minimum wage in my state is around $11.

No one is willing to pay several hundred dollars for a couple of pairs of mittens, no matter how warm and detailed they are. Especially if I'm not a master knitter, which I'm not, and they're bound to have mistakes in them.

So we loop back around to giving them as gifts, and instead ask nothing in return.

If someone gives you something they handmade this Christmas, cherish it.

Today, after going to uni and end up 🤡 after no fucking professor went (🖕) I said that I was going to start doing something that I've been putting off for a few days

You see, I crochet, but at the moment I don't have thread and I haven't had the opportunity to start knitting with cotton and/or wool threads like that that are used for clothes and amigurumis because here where I live they don't sell (in the city not the country) 😭

I'm planning to buy through MercadoLibre (Basically and literally the Venezuelan Amazon LMAO) but the money is still not there 😅 because I'm not an only child and obviously there are more expenses

I came across a video, first on Pinterest (as I love it 🫶) and then on YouTube of a girl who uses old shirts cut into strips as thread to crochet bags And after watching half of the video and thinking about it a little I said hmm, let's try it.

So that's what I'm doing, with old pants stretched tighter than the word, trying to solve becausee laquerresolves 💅

So, for no specific reason, I'll be posting how I'm doing lol 😃 because why not, so stay tuned.

So far

I already cut one of the pant legs into the strips and made the ball (picture time later)

And now I'm going to go for the next leg while I figure out how to study for a preventive medicine quiz for tomorrow, while I do it
