hey scout!
not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but you moved to another state somewhat recently right? I was wondering what that process was like and how you did it. I'm in a red state and really want to go to a blue one. But I'm just unsure of how to even go about it since I don't have a remote job. Any tips would be appreciated, thank you!!!
You are remembering correctly! I moved in with az (@/haruchiyos) in June of 2023. HOWEVER, I moved from a blue state in New England to a Red state in the midwest.... so the opposite direction. Tho I will say I live in a very blue area, which was kinda blinding this election season since I was like 'wow yeah its so liberal here' I forgot about the rest of the state briefly.
However, I will tell you in the 26 years of my life I have lived in 4 different states, and moved cross country 4 times :') most of these moves were not planned. when I moved to my current state it was like 3 days notice and when I moved I thought I was coming back lol (ill put those details in the tags). ANYWAYS, you'll have the benefit of... planning lmao. I'd start with looking at jobs first, and community is important. if you know someone in a blue state that lives in a city you like, I'd recommend making a visit. it would also be easier if you have a place to stay for a bit, and someone who can look at places to live for you.
the benefit of working at a major company also comes to play here, especially if you can transfer stores/offices/ etc and look for jobs. you might also have the benefit of a degree, which could make finding/switching jobs a bit easier (when I moved, I only had az. no degree, no license. it took a month for me to find a job, but I also hadn't worked in 3 years which added to the struggle. I worked for the last year at a grocery store chain, then briefly as a barista, before moving into a healthcare role which is nice and im finally in a type of job where I feel like im not at a deadend lol). Remote jobs can definitely help, but tbh remote jobs are so hard to get and very oversaturated. everyone wants one, making it harder to get one. (one of my friends WFH, and their rec is to apply directly on job sites for it instead of ziprecruiter/indeed/etc, since a lot of them are scams)
Look into subreddits for your city of choice, find what people like about it. ask questions!! ask about cost of living, safer parts of town, what's hiring. my city's subreddit has so many posts like that. if you have the stomach for it, look into working for the government offices/ city offices/ state offices in that city. the benefits you'll get are great and they tend to start much higher than minimum wage.
for friends, try Bumble friends ! look on Facebook for meet up groups. community is so important, now more than ever (which is why I recommended moving to a city where you know someone).
for states, California and New York are what come to mind for very blue states. Northern California is gorgeous and I loved living in New York. NY is where I'd consider home and I still get very homesick thinking about it sometimes. I think Vermont in particular was one of the most gorgeous states ive ever visited and the people were very friendly!!!! like unnervingly friendly idk maybe it was the proximity to Canada lol. Ive been talking to my partner lightly about moving out of this state once they finish college in a year and a half, and I mentioned moving back to New England area in general.
anyways, this feels all over the place!! I hope this helps and as always, im here if anyone has any questions!!!
#when my ex and I broke up it was 2 months before we got married. he was my high school sweetheart and we were together for 9 years.#I told him I wasn't sure of marriage and wanted a month break. he left the house for 3 days while az was getting ready to get me. it was#only supposed to be a temporary break to figure out what we wanted to do but he broke up with me on the car ride (I do not drive. him and a#were meeting halfway to drop me off) he wanted someone who was sure that wanted to marry him (fair) and broke up with me instead of giving#me the space I asked for... but whatever it worked out for the best anyways. he's happy now and so am I!!! I still follow his sister on IG#and he smiles in photos with his gf now (unlike what he did with me)! I also had been to my current city plenty of times to see az so I was#pretty familiar with where I was going so it wasn't brand new to me :')#and yeah some people don't consider NY to be New England but for my purposes im grouping it sue me#— anon#— asks#side note a lot of people are talking about moving out the country and like yeah America has its problems but I do love being an American#I love being so friendly people from other countries would spot im an American. I love living in a country so big so many other cultures ar#packed into it. I love holding the door open for people and saying please and thank you to strangers

the berkowitz family name has long been one that holds prestige & power . among the 1% for over a century . they are a prominent banking family that has had their hands in the pots of nearly every big banking company across the nation . coming into the united states after word broke of the california gold rush back in 1849 , the berkowitz brother’s were of the lucky few to acquire pounds of gold by the thousands . later founding what would become a leading investment bank known as berkowitz capital . the generations to follow would capitalize on the head start given to them by the two brothers . expanding the family company as well as the knowledge of the family name through heavy involvement in politics alongside the kennedy’s . since as early as 1953 there has always been a berkowitz family member actively appointed to a political role ( governor , senator , representative , us ambassador , etc ) . although the families roots within the states are documented in the capital of california , as generations went on they made their way over to the east coast , with most of the family members now residing in southern florida .
the rachelson family is a prominent political family . synonymous with power & eloquence . with their rise initially taking place in the british parliament . many escaped to england from germany between 1933-1935 . they hadn’t settled into the states until jocelyn rachelson ( jalissa’s maternal grandmother ) was appointed the united kingdoms ambassador to the united states in 1987 . the rachelson’s have since had heavy involvement in the us government , both behind the scenes and at the forefront . much of the rachelson family have stayed within the european union ( germany & poland ) as well as england . although the few that followed jocelyn to the states now reside in washington dc and the tri-state area .
henry & austen had met through their mutual friends . it didn’t take long before the two became a rather public couple , a supercouple if you would ( similar to that of a brangelina of the 1% ) . although they’d met in new york the two decided that when it was time to start a family they wanted to move to hilton grove , an island austen had eyed for years . instead they found themselves moving down to fort lauderdale where henry had grown up . before they knew it , they were three kids deep in settling down in fort lauderdale . austen’s anger from never wanting to build a life in florida started to tumble into the relationship & the daily life of the family & so in an effort to recover the marriage henry agreed to moving the family up to hilton grove , where they have resided ever since .
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐉𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐀 𝐄𝐑𝐀
jalissa was born the second of three children and oh boy does she suffer from middle child syndrome , riddled with a envy and a need to be in the mix . the berkowitz household , although , from the outside looking in looked like a fabulous family life was anything but . jalissa , like her siblings , was born on a pedestal & what came attached with that was even higher expectations from her parents . her parents found a way to be extremely authoritarian & uninvolved all at the same time . they were very dismissive if you disappointed them & everything jalissa did seemingly did just that .
for a long time she was obsessed with getting her parents approval , she’d turned life into a silent competition between herself & her siblings . she befriended only the people her parents approved of , did all the events they asked her to do , did everything she could to excel academically & only dated people who were of benefit to her parents ( people who’s parents where also in high places ) .
during highschool she joined the model un , debate team , and soccer team . if it were up to jalissa & not her parents she’d probably had joined the cheerleading team but her mother would never let that fly . it was too “ self indulgent “ to fit the family brand ( if only she’d known what would be coming years later lol ) .
it wasn’t until she was seventeen that she started to deviate from her parents wishes . of course , the catalyst to this was a boy , one her parents hadn’t really approved of but jalissa was completely head over heels for him . he really helped her boost her confidence to be her own person ? and not allow her parents to treat her like a puppet . with his encouragement she started her youtube channel , something she’d wanted to do for years but her mother had shot down the idea anytime jalissa brought it up . it was once again too “ self indulgent ” . the channel known as callmejalissa was an outlet for her , talking to a camera was the most heard she’d felt in seventeen years of her life . and god she knew that was hella sad . she really grew to view her subscribers as family & by the time her channel was brought to her parents attention ( more like her mothers , her dad had found her channel just four months after she’d made it and promised not to tell her mother so long as she was smart about what she posted ) she was about to turn eighteen and there wasn’t much they could do to stop her from doing it .
at eighteen she’d graduated highschool salutatorian with offers from university of pennsylvania & brown university . in all honesty she didn’t wnat to go to college , she saw it as a complete waste of her time . it wasn’t like she was going to do anything with the degree anyways . it would simply be a point of bragging for her parents at events & at this point she really could care less about them being able to brag to their friends . she knew she had to play along though , because this was the same year she was going to receive her first half of her trust fund ( a whoopin 500m , yes her trust fund in total will be 1b her parents are grossly wealthy guys ) so she bamboozled ? her parents , promising she’d committed to attending penn just so they’d allow for the money to be released to her account . she moved out of the house , literally moving into a house of her own a couple blocks from her parents house & claimed she was living in pennsylvania for college . we stan a sneaky binch .
two months later her parents were at her front door , though , ready to give her an ear full . her mother basically disowned her at this point . telling her how every year jalissa found a new way to be a bigger disappointment . her dad kind of played good cop , like he normally would because her mother often dug into her pretty deeply . to the point where any insecurity ( even though with the way she carries herself you’d never think she has any ) she has stems from something her mother has said / called her in the past . if henry berkowitz had a soft spot , it was certainly jalissa , it that had only grown clearly with the harsher austen became on the girl .
a few months before her nineteenth birthday a sex tape was released of jalissa cheating on her boyfriend at the time . it was a drunken mistake she’d made around the time of her mother basically disowning her , but that explanation did suffice for her boyfriend who inevitably broke things off with her . although this was a horrific time she’d received an abundance of offers to film more tapes . it was enticing to say the least . she was someone who loved intercourse but also had this deeply rooted desire to get back at her mother ? and what better way to do so then to something so far left from what her mother was about . this was next level disappointment in the eyes of austen berkowitz . the only thing that made sense ( in her mind ) was to dive head first into the porn industry .
like you’d expect her parents had a fit when they found out about her new career choice . although her internet fame had soared to new heights and her youtube & instagram followers were loving every second of this move . her mom was currently serving as governor and has since not been able to get elected in the political world since jalissa became one of the top porn stars around . they basically blacklisted her & jalissa feels no remorse , she’s gone so far as telling her mother “ sucks to be shunned , huh? ” .
although it took her dad a while to come around , he cares far too much to shut her out .
not to long after jalissa & her best friend started their podcast tickets to our downfall , it’s a mix of call her daddy & the basement yard , basically two besties talking on a level that most people wouldn’t want to leave the privacy of their own space , giving advice , hoe tricks , and telling funny stories of their past . it a total hit & one of jalissa’s favorite things to do .
she live sin the same house she has since she was eighteen . she lives on her own with three dogs and a cat . she absolutely hates being alone and so maggie ( a tan corgi puppy ) , louis ( a yellow lab puppy ) , humphrey ( a chocolate lab ) , and cedric ( a orange scottish fold ) are her babies that keep her sane in her big ole home .
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
as you can tell jalissa is chaotic , impulsive , reactive , and overall just searching for attention . she doesn’t care if the attention she receives is for the wrong reason or not , as long as she’s getting it . despite this she’s a good person ? i promise . she’s very friendly , loves a good joke & having a good time . very fun loving . she’s the type of person to try and bring up everyone else’s mood even when she isn’t feeling 100% herself . she’s loyal to those she deems are loyal to her . sometimes she’s bad a seeing who is actually loyal to her though & will be disloyal to someone who actually has her back ? oops . she’s definitely not the type to sugar coat anything for you , she tells it like it is & refuses to apologize if that hurts your feelings . if you cross her ? i’ll be praying for you . she’s the type to fuck your s/o , tell your boss some wild story about you & dump alcohol over your head at an event all in the matter of a week . don’t get her going , she’s absolutely relentless . with that said she’d very affectionate ... ? you can catch her hugging up on whoever is next to her at all times . touch is her love language , because lord knows she’s no sweetheart . she hates the stereotype of porn stars / internet personalities being ditzy , although she didn’t attend university she was accepted into two ivy leagues based off her academic abilities alone . the girl is intelligent & enjoys having a clever conversation from time to time .
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
a girl squad or just a squad in general really , give my baby her lil group of people please
her ex boyfriend from when she was seventeen ( he’s mentioned above ) but basically he’s the one who encouraged her to not let her parents make her their puppet , they didn’t approve of him , jalissa fell head over heels for him . they would’ve dated for nearly two years because the sex tape of her cheating on him came out .
the person she cheated on her ex with ? maybe they’re the one who leaked the sex tape ? maybe they never even told jalissa they were recording ?
her best friend that she does the tickets to our downfall podcast with ? these two are literally like twins , just two peas in a pod ( pun intended )
fans of her work ? and im not taking about her youtube channel or podcast
ex hook ups that think she’s crazy ? she probably gave them reason to think so lbr
frenemies give me blair & serena circa season one type of shit
just plain old enemies , they were probably friends at one point or maybe just have always disliked one another ?
smoking buddies were they literally just hot box cars together and munch on taco bell talking about why sound vibrates & shit
someone who isn’t afraid to confess their love for jalissa but her damaged ass refuses to confess her feelings for them ? so it’s just this constant cycle of them having a good time , them being sweet & her just gets weirdly quite & starring at them before she complaining about them going and ruining the vibes
she’s a bad influence on them ? they’re a good influence on her ? ride or dies ? partners in crime ? only friends when there is a substance involved ? sugar baby vibes ? unlikely friends ? flings ? crush ? friends with benefits ? everytime they are around one another its a fight ? someone she lets crash at her place sometimes ? someone she’s backstabbed & maybe they don’t even know she has & they still think she’s a ride or die for them ?

Who are Saint Petersburg brides?
The women in Saint Petersburg are very special and differ from the rest of Russian women. They live in the second largest city in Russia, which hosts the major cultural events, such as theatre performances, movie marathons, concerts, exhibitions etc. There are a lot of sites and historical monuments in St. Petersburg, too. An exquisite taste and elegant manners of its female citizens set them apart from the rest of the brides in Russia. Due to the proximity to Europe, St. Petersburg is believed to have the most flexible, progressive, well-bread, patient and friendly women. Do not hesitate to start chatting with these charming ladies at our online marriage agency!
- Appearance of Saint Petersburg brides
All women from the city on the Neva River have an intrinsic sense of proportion and elegance. Thus, a single girl from St. Petersburg usually looks very elegant and stylish. Thanks to her good taste, she is likely to wear fashionable things that do not look neither vulgar nor boring. Such a bride prefers natural colours in clothes as well as in her makeup, because they gently enhance her inborn beauty. These ladies do not like showing off too much and, instead of blatant colours, they adore black and all shades of gray. Such strict colour patterns are usually diluted with the help of red, orange, pink, blue and yellow spots and accessories, such as shoes, handbags, scarves, gloves and umbrellas, which are an integral part of their wardrobe because of the frequent rains. Indeed, the local climate might have as well influenced the preferences of these women (there are approximately 60 solar days out of 365 in this city.) However, gloomy clouds do not have enough power to shadow a sunny character of St. Petersburg women.

Character of Saint Petersburg women
The ladies from the city on the Neva River make very good wives. They are well-balanced, positive, kind and compassionate. In fact, harmony is the most suitable word that can describe the nature of a bride from St. Petersburg! Many men find this quality very appealing. It does not matter which country your wife comes from, if she is able to surround you with her loving fluids, doesn’t it? Real feelings do not know any limits or borders, even if at first a person seems to be a complete foreigner to you…
Exquisite and dignified, these women make incredible life partners. If you are looking for an intellectual lady who will be able to discuss any topic with you, choose a girl from St. Petersburg. Most of them have higher education and know several foreign languages, so they also make good travelling companions.
Nota bene
There is a peculiarity of the local girls which you should know about. They preserve their comfort zone like the Scandinavians and do not like touching people whom they do not know very well. They usually avoid the places that are overcrowded and keep a distance from the people in a subway car or in a bus. If you come to St. Petersburg one day to visit your beautiful lady, do not appoint a date near a flea market and definitely do not put the pressure on your girlfriend by touching her too often. You should rather give her some time to get used to you. Please take this peculiarity into account and do not think that these women are “touch-me-nots.” They just do not like to have their private space disturbed, nothing more.
Housekeeping skills
Russian girls are considered to be amazing housewives, and the women of St. Petersburg are not an exception. They inherited the best recipes of the local cuisine from their mothers and will be happy to cook delicious meals for their beloved husbands. They can look after the house very well, creating a cosy atmosphere there. As for raising children, the ladies from this city will definitely want to do it themselves, without any help of a nanny. Being good mothers and wives is a must for them, as it is considered to be a sign of family well-being in Russia.

The girls, who create profiles at Saint Petersburg marriage agency, are looking for a mature and a reliable partner. The influence of Europe is rather strong in this multinational city, so it might be a little easier to get along with a local bride than with a woman from other part of Russia. They will hardly ever judge you by your origin or religious beliefs. No wonder that these brides want to see the same qualities in their partner! Unfortunately, they often fall victims of an aggressive behavior and an arrogant attitude, typical of some Russian men. Instead of being worshiped, these women are underestimated. There is also a constant lack of men in this country, so the brides from Saint Petersburg resort to online dating services in order to meet a real man, who has the same goals in life.

Arplis - News: Wearable souvenirs: 10 best places for vintage shopping around the world
The Earth is suffering, and we all know that. Choosing to travel in a sustainable way and supporting eco-friendly hostels is already making a big difference. That being said, the fashion industry alone accounts for 5% of all manmade greenhouse gas emissions, and experts say that percentage is set to grow. Not to mention the ethical implications of underpaid workers and child labour. Being bombarded with all this information can be overwhelming, I know it was for me. I love fashion and creating new outfits, so I started looking into ways to do it in more sustainably. Given that most eco-friendly brands right now are quite expensive, and working with a backpackers budget, I turned to vintage and thrift shopping, something that I thought was limited to pretty ladies wearing red lipstick and a beehive. I started warily, but I still remember the feeling of finding that perfect vintage t-shirt for a bunch of euros, and before you know it, I was hooked. If you want to learn the best places for vintage shopping around the world, youve come to the right place.
The cool thing about buying second-hand is that youre not putting anything new into our ecosystem. All those clothes were already loved and worn, and their only options were to end up in landfillor in your closet! Theres also a hunting aspect to vintage shopping that I took a liking to. Finding the perfect fit is so much harder than selecting the right size on a website, and once you stumble upon a piece of clothing you like and that looks good on you, it feels like the stars have aligned. Truly a magical feeling! Thrifting became a hobby of mine, and as a traveller, I started implementing it in my trips, too. Every time I was in a new place, I would reserve at least half a day to raiding those foreign second-hand stores, on crazy itineraries that took me around the coolest neighbourhoods. I was often coming back home with unique vintage finds as souvenirs, and I started getting the same feeling I got when I travelled as a child pre-internet stores, when I was excited for all the different places I could shop at. I loved showing up at school with some funky pants and answering I got them in Paris when asked where they were from. I know, a bit pretentious, but youd be lying if you said you didnt love it too!

Through vintage shopping while travelling, my closet started turning into a postcard box made of clothes accumulated from around the globe. Memories of that trip would be woven into the fibres of the garments and every piece started meaning so much more than clothing used to. How precious is it to see a world map of the places youve been every time you open your wardrobe? There are cities out there full of the coolest and quirkiest pieces, just waiting for you to ransack through their racks. As a backpacker, Id urge you to take some time to explore the local vintage scene wherever you are. And if you dont know where to start, take a look at our top ten best places for vintage shopping around the world. Go on get thrifty!
1. Milan, Italy
:@alexandru_stravrica
Milan is the fashion capital of the world, with designer stores lining the sidewalks that the most stylish people youll ever see stomp their stiletto heels on. Think faux fur coats and huge sunglasses, plus that one quirky element to show the world youre that high fashion. Youd think second-hand stores wouldnt belong in a city so posh, but youd be wrong. The Solari neighbourhood, south of the city, boasts quirky windows and neon signs showing off a more sustainable and fun side of this high fashion hub. My personal favourite is Humana Vintage, a true vintage store selling fifties dresses to cosy grandma sweaters, with prices that go as low as 5 and deals going on all the time. A few blocks from there youll find yourself in the street of vintage stores, with a bunch of thrift stores all a couple metres from each other. SNAP Milano is a cool concept store selling vintage pieces gathered from all around the world. If Japanese fashion appeals to you, definitely give it a try. Bivio has both a male and female store and specialises in designer pieces. So go rummaging you could snag a pair of snazzy velvet green Versace Jeans pants for as low as 20! Theyre also willing to buy your old clothes: a great way to refresh your backpack without running out of space!
Humana Vintage, Via Cappellari, 3, 20123 Milan MI
SNAP Milano, Via Gian Giacomo Mora, 11, 20123 Milan MI
Bivio Milano, Via Lambro, 12, 20129 Milan MI
Bivio Milano Donna, Via Gian Giacomo Mora, 4, 20100 Milan MI
2. London, UK
:@evantdang
If youve heard anything about London, Im sure youve heard about Brick Lane and its iconic vintage stores. London is one of the best places for vintage shopping and names like Rokit are legendary. The price tag can reflect the fame though, and although I recommend visiting the main stores if youve never been, I thought Id include a couple of backpackers budget tips too.
Beyond Retro is one of my favourite places to shop in London and online, with cool reworked pieces and a perfect sustainable record that includes reusing shipping boxes and shipping by sea instead of air. Some of their stuff can be pricey, but you can also find affordable pieces that still have that cool edge to them.
The best way to spend money while buying second hand in London is by hitting charity shops. On top of helping the Earth, youll also give a hand to the different charities they support. Being donation-based, youll be better off heading to the western part of the city, where posh people live and donate their clothes. Oxfam in Notting Hill will hook you up with a cheetah mini skirt for as cheap as 3, and youll be helping an association thats working to end poverty all around the world at the same time.
Wombats City Hostel London is located in Whitechapel and is only a short walk from the thrifty neighbourhood of Shoreditch and Brick Lane. Check out all the hostels in London to plan your vintage tour of the city!
Rokit, 101 Brick Ln, London E1 6SE, UK
Beyond Retro Soho, 58-59 Great Marlborough St, Soho, London W1F 7JY, UK
Oxfam, 144 Notting Hill Gate, Notting Hill, London W11 3QG, UK
3. Dublin, Ireland
:Getty Images
In many cities, all the best vintage stores are crammed together. In Dublin its no different, as all the best places for vintage shopping are right behind the popular Temple Town, famous for its bright red bar and a couple of other pubs. If you manage to avoid the calling of a fresh pint of Guinness, go up Fawness Street and get ready to immerse yourself in the marvel of Irish vintage shopping.
You cant miss Lucys Lounge because of its bright pink faade its hella chic inside and out!.. Climb down the stairs and find yourself in the wonder of sweaters and vintage jeans. Whats interesting about this one is the impressive collection of vintage lingerie and lacy corsets, handy if youre looking to get lucky in the leprechauns land.
Something I love about shopping in Dublin is their vintage reworked stores, which take pre-loved pieces and turn them into an Urban Outfitters worthy number. Fresh has a super clean feel thanks to its all-white interiors and perfectly organised selection. If youre on the hunt for a pair of white vintage Levis, this is the place to go. Nine Crows, which is right next door, is one of my favourite second-hand stores in the whole world, boasting a cool-girl vibe, vintage berets and cropped flannels to fulfil all your country girl dreams.
Just like Dublins shopping scene, the hostels in Dublin are pretty slick. Generator Dublin has an on-site bar, a games room and plenty of fun events like karaoke and drinking games. Its somewhere to channel your inner hipster!
Lucys Lounge, 11 Fownes Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland
Fresh Limited, 1 Crown Alley, Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland
Nine Crows, 22 Temple Lane South, Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland
4. Stockholm, Sweden
:Getty Images
Stockholm was one of the first places I thrifted in and it should be considered one of the best cities for vintage shopping. The thrifting culture is big in Scandinavia, just like how everythings cool and sustainable (theyre just the best, ugh). Youll just have to venture to the hipster neighbourhood of Sdermalm to find vintage stores aplenty. My beloved British Beyond Retro has a Swedish store too, but if youre visiting you should absolutely check out Humana Second Hand. Although they have a similar name, this company is not affiliated with the Italian franchise, but youll find their stores all over Scandinavia and Germany. Their selection is perfectly curated and ranges from leather jackets to cool sweatshirts. What I love about it is that it feels like a regular store and misses that old clothes vibe that can scare off newbies. Its just like Urban Outfitters, but with a much more fun (and cheap!) selection.
City Backpackers Hostel has a vintage vibe throughout perfect for you old souls! Dont forget to check out our other hostels in Sweden.
Beyond Retro, Brnnkyrkagatan 82, 118 23 Stockholm, Sweden
HUMANA Second Hand, Timmermansgatan 23, 118 55 Stockholm, Sweden
5. Vancouver, Canada
:Getty Images
Being Canada is the capital of everything thats hip and sustainable, it makes sense that Vancouver would be the number one spot to check out for vintage shops when heading North. Right in Yaletown, the coolest part of the city in my opinion, youll find a couple of spots nestled in between a caf and a cool brunch place that are worth a visit. House of Vintage is an aesthetic fanatics dream, with racks and racks of perfectly organised clothes going from flannels (its Canada, duh) to skirts and accessories. They also have a household section if youre looking for a used toaster or something like that.
If youre after the classic North American thrift store experience, head to the Value Villages all across the city. These dont really offer a curated selection of pieces, but more an overwhelming amount of clothes that you have to look through until you find that hidden gem. Who wouldve guessed youd go hunting in Canada?Bargain hunting that is!
Samesun Vancouver is centrally located, so its surrounded by the citys best bars and clubs. If you dont feel like going out, chill by the on-site bar! Explore all of Vancouvers hostels.
House of Vintage, 1008 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1A7, Canada
Value Village,6415 Victoria Dr, Vancouver, BC V5P 3X5, Canada
6. Portland, USA
:@zackspear
Could the hipster capital of the world not be included on this list? Portland, Oregon, is known all over the world for its craft breweries and quirky coffee shops, but its vintage shopping scene is a gamechanger. You cant miss Buffalo Exchange, right in front of the famous Powells City of Books, probably the most popular thrift store in PDX. The store is big, so its likely to feel a bit overwhelming, but if you take your time, youll be able to find a range of interesting pieces, some even with the tag still on! The big downside is its central location, that makes it quite busy on a day-to-day basis.
To live the authentic Portland lifestyle, dedicate a whole day to vintage shopping. Head to House of Vintage, a collective of different dealers selling clothes, accessories and bags in a huge warehouse in the Sunnyside area, so iconic its where some of the Portlandia outfits are from. Top it off with some food from local food trucks and a pretentious handcrafted coffee and youll be living like a local.
With Portlands hostels, its kitchy vibes all around. HI Portland Hawthorne is a charming eco-friendly hostel that offers free light breakfast, bicycle hire and fun activities. Get to know this wonderfully wacky city and book your stay now!
Buffalo Exchange, 1036 W Burnside St, Portland, OR 97209, USA
House of Vintage, 3315 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214, USA
7. New York, USA
:Getty Images
Vintage stores tend to reflect a citys vibe, so the more a place is cool, edgy and fashionable, the more youll find gems hidden between the thrift stores racks. Thats why the Big Apple is one of the best places for vintage shopping, offering a variety of stores as big as its number of different personalities. Depending on where you thrift, youll find different ranges and prices: Ina, Tokio 7 and Micheals on the Upper East Side are full of designer gems and fashion interns trying to look the part on a budget. If you move towards Brooklyn, youre deep in hipster territory, with Quality Meding helping you to rock the mechanic-chic look with dungarees and distressed workwear. Thriftwares is full of silk dresses and woven bags to effortlessly channel that chic Parisian vibe.
New York is known as the city that never sleeps, but youll at least need a rest after all that vintage shopping! You dont have to spend big bucks to live like an Upper East Sider. Freehand New York just seeps style and is calling your name!
INA, 110 E 13th St, New York, NY 10003, USA
Tokio 7, 83 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003, USA
Micheals, 1125 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA
Quality Mending, 705 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211, USA
Thriftwares, 70 N 7th St, Brooklyn, NY 11211, USA
8. Tokyo, Japan
:@magict1911
Tokyo is a crazy city, and so is its vintage shopping scene! The best places for vintage shopping are in Shimokitazawa, a neighbourhood close to Shibuya metro station. If anything, its definitely where most of them are! Im talking hundreds of different shops. Seriously, its overwhelming. If you add to that all the temporary pop-up shops, theres no way youll be able to hit them all but thats ok because it gives you a reason to come back!
Obviously with so many, theres a thrift shop here for every style and every budget. Personally, I prefer the ones that stay under 20, but Im willing to make an exception for places like Grapefruit Moon because its just too cute and deserves a visit if youre ever in Tokyo. To stick to a backpackers budget, head to New York Joes Exchange, where you can bring your old clothes and get new ones in return! Or, I mean, someone elses old clothes. If you dont want to spend your whole time in Tokyo looking for thrift finds (understandably!), check out Shimokita Garage, a vintage market where youll find different sellers all in one place. Score!
While wandering through the neighbourhood of Shibuya, make The Millennials Shibuya your base. This ultra-sleek hostel has reclining pod beds and a futuristic bar.
Grapefruit Moon, 154-0000 Tokyo, Setagaya City, Kitazawa, 2 Chome211 F, Japan
New York Joe Exchange, 1 Chome-20-4 Jinnan, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0041, Japan
Shimokita Garage, 2 Chome-25-8 Kitazawa, Setagaya City, Tokyo 155-0031, Japan
9. Paris, France
:Getty Images
The dreamy capital of France is especially known for true vintage shopping and less thrift finds. So, think beautifully curated boutiques and slightly more expensive prices. At around 30 for a pair of pants though, I dont think its too bad in a city thats home to designer labels like Saint Laurent and Chanel.
Most of the more affordable vintage stores in Paris are located in the Marais district, like Coiffeur Vintage, a cute wooden door that opens to floral prints and organised chaos, or Vintage by Ramin, pretty hard to miss because of its hot pink awning. Youll also spot quite a few Kilo Shops around Paris that, as the name suggests sell clothes by weight, usually 40 per kilo. Some of their locations are themed for example, Kilo Shop Kawaii specialises in Japanese fashion.
The cool thing about vintage shopping in Paris is that the Parisian style is timeless, so second-hand items will look just as good as brand new ones. Fill your baskets with pastel coloured cardigans, midi dresses and perfectly fitting jeans, and get ready to embody the effortless chicness of a French girl!
So why not head to the worlds capital of fashion and stay in one of Pariss hostels? Stay in the artsy district of Belleville at Les Piaules, where youll be welcomed with funky interiors, lush dorms and an on-site bar!
Coiffeur Vintage, 32 Rue des Rosiers, 75004 Paris, France
Vintage by Ramin, 64 Rue de la Verrerie, 75004 Paris, France
Kilo Shop Kawaii, 65 Rue de la Verrerie, 75004 Paris, France
10. Los Angeles, USA
:Getty Images
LA is beaches, Hollywood stars and wannabe influencers, but its a score for vintage shopping too! Maybe its because everything is so spaced out and many thrift stores can thrive, or maybe its because in a city so big it only makes sense that someone would end up getting rid of something nice at one point or another.
Los Angeles second-hand shopping is all about quantity, with the massive Society of St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles Thrift Store being a prime example its the biggest thrift store in LA! You can get lost in this store for hours, finding gems like vintage Ralph Lauren blazers for $8 hidden behind a pile of Forever 21 faded tops.
You dont have to buy into the hype of a popular attraction though: a simple visit to the many Goodwills around the city will do! Given the huge selection they carry, youre bound to find something cute and interesting in any of them. Its science!
Dont forget to walk down Hollywood boulevard after all the shopping is done. LAs hostels give a relaxed and summery vibe making it the ideal chill out space. Walk of Fame Hollywood Hostel is ON Hollywood Blvd. So, I guess Ill see you in the movies
Society of St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles Thrift Store, 210 N Ave 21, Los Angeles, CA 90031, USA
:@astaclivo
Each of these cities has so much more to offer, not to mention all the vintage stores hidden in the other parts of the world! I hope that next time you find yourself in a new place, youll decide to check out the best places for vintage shopping too, and maybe come home with a little wearable souvenir. And if you happen to find something really cool, please let us know in the comments below!

First Hooters girl Lynne Austin looks back at her success, Playboy Playmate title
Lynne Austin had no idea how much her life would change after she agreed to pose for a billboard advertising a new restaurant opening in Clearwater, Florida.
I literally started before the restaurant opened, the 56-year-old told Fox News.
She became the poster girl for Hooters in 1983.
We were delayed in getting the restaurant opened, so by that time I was pretty broke. Being a young girl, I joined this new venture. I actually cleaned the restaurant equipment for five bucks an hour before we opened.
Before Austin accepted the opportunity, she was working at a telephone company and modeling on the side. She was spotted by Hooters co-founder Ed Droste at the Miss Jose Cuervo bikini pageant that year, which she won. She accepted Drostes offer to appear in a new ad for Hooters, not thinking much of it.
The [Hooters] building — [there] had been about four awful businesses there, explained Austin. I think it was a biker bar at one point and a pizza shop.
Austin was craving something new. She quit her job with the telephone company and worked at Hooters as a waitress. While Hooters was the ideal spot to savor hot wings and cold beer after unwinding at the local beach, it was the American blonde wearing a white tank top and tiny orange shorts that enticed patrons.
The first time I ever saw the billboard, it was kind of surreal, Austin recalled. Like, ‘Oh my Lord, there I am, my big ol face is up here’ And quickly, they started marketing from there. They did taxi tops. I was on the front of a boat, I was on the side of a delivery truck I was everywhere. For 15 years I had billboards up The thrill of being the face never got old. Still doesnt.
And the tactic worked. For six years, Austin quickly garnered regulars and fans hoping to be served by the pinup. Word spread that the actual Hooters girl was in the restaurant and it didnt take long for lines of admirers to form and wait up to three hours.
A post shared by Lynne Austin (@lynnea11) on Apr 3, 2014 at 11:34am PDT
People would send me flowers to the restaurant, they would come in and sit at my table for hours, trying to get my attention, she said. A lot of it was very flattering but Ive been married for 20 years now so I dont even remember those kinds of stories! But there were plenty of guys trying to get my attention.
“[But] who doesnt love that? Who doesnt love people wanting to see you, be around you, and love your personality? Of course I loved it. I still do! People still come to me and want a picture with me. And Im always so flattered and grateful that people still care.
Hooters soon transformed from a casual pit stop into an iconic chain. There are currently more than 420 restaurants in 42 states and 29 countries all serving its winning combo: tasty grub, televised sports, ever-flowing beer and plenty of friendly women. However, some critics have slammed Hooters over the years, accusing the restaurant of exploiting scantily clad women on the job.
A post shared by Lynne Austin (@lynnea11) on Sep 19, 2013 at 2:26pm PDT
Austin doesnt hesitate to dismiss the allegations.
I was there from the beginning, she explained. We wore running shorts and a tank top and I get it, thats not the attire of another restaurant. But you saw way more at the beach then you ever saw in our restaurant. We patterned our uniform after one of the owners who was a runner. So we got the runner shorts. And theres certainly nothing wrong with runners wearing shorts. Ive never had a problem with it.
“But Im a beach girl Its honestly hard to convince me that theres anything wrong with our uniform. And wed had nurses, lawyers, and I think even a judge who were former Hooters girls. Our accomplishments are remarkable. Its way more than serving wings and wearing shorts. Im proud of it.
A post shared by Lynne Austin (@lynnea11) on May 9, 2013 at 11:17am PDT
Austin also credited Hooters for granting her the flexibility to pursue modeling career on the side.
There are so many girls pursuing education, modeling, acting, whatever, but they still call Hooters home, she insisted. They did that for me also. They worked around my schedule while I was modeling and traveling. But when I was in town, I would pick up a couple of shifts.
And Austins newfound fame led to another title that of Playboy Playmate in 1986.
A post shared by Lynne Austin (@lynnea11) on May 9, 2013 at 11:15am PDT
[Hugh Hefner] was very nice, she said. A very intelligent man, very well-spoken, very educated — just a nice man. He was always very polite, a gentleman, and a nice host! But I couldnt tell you his favorite color. We werent that friendly!
Austin would also go on to guest-star in two episodes of the hit sitcom Married with Children in 1989. She also appeared on Star Search, and hosted Hooters Movie of the Week every Saturday on television for seven years.
Austin also did radio for 18 years. Back in July, she served as one of the judges for the Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant. Currently, the mother of four hosts a podcast and is writing a memoir about her adventures.
Just about everything I do, Hooters is always my base, my heart, she said. Any success Ive ever had, I always brought them along with me. They were a launching pad for me. And the Hooters girl? Shes an icon. All you need to do is see those orange shorts.
Even her children are proud of their mothers accomplishments.
Oh they love the title of [first Hooters girl], she said. Back in elementary school, they would go, Mom! My teacher knows who you are! My teacher loves Hooters I would totally let my daughter be a Hooters girl if she didnt have to drive back home at night alone. But if I could drive her there and back? Absolutely.
Still, dont expect Austin to slip into her old uniform anytime soon.
No, I can never do that uniform justice, she claimed. That uniform doesnt need me anymore. Theres too many other girls that could wear it way better than I could.

Blog Post #8
29My responses to the appendix interview and my mom’s answers
• If you think of a few recent purchases what were the main factors that influenced your purchase? Usually my purchases are out of necessity or spontaneity. It’s either something I need, or something I want in the spur of the moment. Usually price.
• What was your last music-related purchase? I bought a concert ticket to see one of my favorite singers with my best friend. I bought a Pink Floyd T-shirt that I found in the boys section at JCPenney’s and it was five dollars
• What were the main reasons/motivations behind the purchase? It’s a person I really love and admire and I haven’t been to an actual concert in years, so like why not? It was five dollars and it had Pink Floyd on it
• What kind of music do you like? I like a lot of music, I can even stand country music sometimes. Mostly, I like slow sad sounding music, or music that makes me feel something. Music I like.... I like pretty much everything except hard core rap and country music. Specifically I like rock n roll and hip hop dance music
• How do you consume music—i.e., how do you buy it/ when do you watch/listen to it/where do you watch/ listen to it? I usually listen to spotify whenever i’m using my laptop, or if im listening on my phone I listen to the music ive purchased through google play. In the car I listen to CDs or the radio. I mostly listen to it on the radio at home in the car or on my iPhone via Pandora or iTunes
• What are your opinions on the current music industry as a whole? I feel like there are a lot of people who don’t get the recognition they deserve, and some people who get recognition they don’t deserve. This can really be said for just about any industry though. What does that mean? (evie gives brief explaination) Well, I don’t know any of them personally...
• How much of an influence would your favorite musicians have on you as a person? I think a lot of my favorite artists have shaped who I am, and I draw a lot from the music I listen to in terms of i dont know, personality and the way I deal with things. None. Although when Chester benigton killed himself that really pissed me off because his music had a lot of influence on overcoming obstacles and then he offs himself. That was lame. But really they can take a stand for whatever and unless they are complete bigot assholes I’ll still listen to their music.
• How about on your purchases? I want to support these people, so yeah I’m going to buy their stuff if I can afford it, especially up and coming artists that I really want to see succeed. Also, maybe they influence my purchases on things like clothes and stuff. No.
• Do you consider social responsibility and/or ethical considerations when making purchases of products/ services in the area of music? There are some artists that while I enjoy their music, I don’t agree with actions they take or how they feel about certain topics. I’m less likely to purchase anything related to an artist who’s actions I don’t agree with, and here I think I’m mostly talking about people like Chris Brown who literally is an abuser and takes what he wants whenever he wants it and is literally just an awful person. No.
• Can you think of ways that musicians/bands currently engage in socially responsible behavior? There’s a lot going on in the world, and a lot of issues that need representation and awareness in order to get anything done, and music and artists are a great way to send these messages. Even just being openly supportive of a cause, or donating money to a cause can really bring awareness. When they preach about politics during their concerts instead of singing or when they bring kids up on stage that really enjoy their music during concerts and cater to their fans that’s a good one.
• Do any recent examples of socially responsible behavior within the music industry come to mind? Taylor Swift and her suing the guy who sexually assaulted her for a dollar, not to get any money but to call to action this kind of thing that happens all the time and shouldn’t be normalized. She also donated a large sum to sexual assault survivors and historically has donated a lot to disaster relief funds and fans who need help financially. In 2015 she donated $50,000 to a fan who was diagnosed with Leukemia. It’s because of Swift that GoFundMe had to raise the amount a person is allowed to donate at a time. Hearing about some musicians donating lots of money to a specific causes. My favorite is Jon Bon Jovi and how he has a restaurant that caters to the hungry and the homeless.
• Have you considered aspects of socially responsible behavior when you have attended live music events? Historically, not really. However the only concert i’ve been to in the last five years was to see the Wallflowers. In the past I’ve seen some bands live that now I don’t think I’d really want to see again. Not always, but at least sometimes you can tell a lot about an artist or band by their fans, and some of the music I used to listen to in lets say middle school, definitely have views a lot different from what I know now. No.
• Have you engaged in socially responsible behavior at live music events? No. Yes. (evie: care to elaborate?) Sitting down so people can see behind me saying please when walking through the crowd. Saying excuse me.
• How would you define a socially responsible musician? I think I remember reading an article about an artist who stopped a show after seeing a fan in the audience having a panic attack, and made sure to get this fan help before continuing (after some research, this artist was Harry Styles) and there have been other instances like this (Drake stops concert to call out groping, Linkin Park also stops show to help a fan, etc.). I think this is what it means to be socially responsible. There’s a lot that’s going on in a crowd at a show, and for an artist to call out a bad situation really shows that. A musician that shows social responsibility to me it is defined as a musician that preaches love and community and is involved and good fundraising for programs that help society, like Bon Jovi. I think he is a prime example of what a musician that shows social responsibility.
• Do you think it is important for them to act in a socially responsible way? Yes. It shows that a person cares about their fans, and not just the money they make off of them, and in this age if you’re neutral in situations of injustice, you’re on the side of the oppressor. Yes.
• Would you be more likely to buy an album/attend a concert of an artist that you perceive to be engaged in socially responsible behavior? Yes. Yes.
• Have you attended a live event due to the socially responsible aspect of the event? No. Yes but only because I was working (she’s a stage-hand).
• How would you compare the role that social responsibility plays in everyday consumption decisions to music consumption decisions? People look for brands that are socially responsible in a lot of their purchases. Whether a brand tests on animals, or companies that are tied to a charity. I know I tend to shop at target, one because I love target, and two because I know they have a partnership with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and having that knowledge makes me feel even better when shopping there. There are also stores and other places I refuse to shop at, such as Goodwill because of their inaction to help people, despite their claims otherwise. (Goodwill had a thing going where when purchasing goods you could round up to the nearest dollar, and the extra few cents would be donated to veterans. No money was ever donated and goodwill managers are frequently seen refusing to provide clothing to homeless people (including veterans) despite claiming they would clothe any homless person who came to the store.) For younger people I say that is a big factor but for my age not so much. (evie: I told her what I put for my answer) Yes, those are good examples. I definitely agree with that.
2.) Anyone can say anything to get attention, but it’s action and reaction that determine real intentions. Like I said earlier in my interview answers, Goodwill for example claims to be a place of donation, yet the Goodwill CEO makes $729,000 annually and their employees don’t make a living wage. An they aren’t the only company that makes promises like this and don’t follow through. I think it’s important for artists, while preaching a certain message, uphold the ideals that they are setting. And there are a lot of artists that do a lot of good. Thom Yorke for example, and Bon Jovi like my mom mentioned. Thom Yorke engages in eco-friendly events and lives eco-friendly so you know he’s not just doing these things for publicity. Unlike Thom Yorke and many others, there are many people who will preach the importance of donating to charity but run these multi-million dollar empires without contributing a dime to anything worthwhile that has the potential to change the world. This doesn’t just apply to musicians either, there are a lot of rich people in the spot light that don’t do anything or don’t do enough. The article states: “Music is a powerful vehicle through which tastes and values are understood, and social groups and subcultures are formed.” While I completely agree with. A lot of the music I listen to reflects what I believe and who I am, and where my values align. I find that people who share my same music interests tend to have a lot of the same views as I do, not always but a significant amount of time. A lot of music I listened to when I was younger, I didn’t really understand, and I see that some of the people that listen to that kind of music now are people I tend to not want to associate with, as I don’t want to associate with that music anymore either.
I think the video by Lin Manuel Miranda where he wrote a song and had a bunch of other Latin American artists come together to raise money was a great example of an artist being authentic in promoting something. This project was close to him, as someone who’s parents immigrated from Puerto Rico, and this wasn’t the only action he took in support of the relief fund for Puerto Rico. He promoted this charity on talk shows, visited Puerto Rico, brought Hamilton to Puerto Rico and provided a way to allow impoverished people to see his show, and has donated around 2.5 million towards this cause and other causes through his words and his work. Not only this, but he continues to raise money for other causes, such as March for our Lives (Starting with his collaborative song with Ben Platt). Since LMM’s rise to fame, he has never stopped giving back to the community and working for equality across every issue.
I currently don’t have an example of the opposite, where an artist doesn’t meet up to their claims, but will try to think of one before class.

Awkward Moments While Traveling: Part 5
Traveling isn’t always fun. Sometimes it’s awkward, frustrating, or even makes you fear for your safety.
This post is dedicated to all those unpleasant times.
India is definitely not an easy country to travel to. I’ll hate it one moment, then love it another. It’s incredibly interesting, yet Intense (with a capital I). One thing’s for sure: it’s never boring. It’s officially been a week since I’ve been traveling in India and I have had so many awkward moments. I struggle to find positivity in most of these incidents. Although I have experienced genuine kindness and generosity in India, the awkward moments seem to occur more often. Hopefully these stories will provide entertainment for others, as they were not pleasant to go through.
The Hare Krishna Rosary
The Iskcon Temple in Mumbai, is one of the many religious organization’s temples dedicated to the Hindu deity, Krishna. The temple was located near my Air Bnb so I wanted to check it out…plus, my host informed me that there was excellent pani puri sold there.
After a walk around the temple, my stomach was telling me it was pani puri time. Upon exiting, I was stopped by 3 worshippers. They asked if I wanted to try chanting. I hesitated, but wanted to be open minded. I thought it would just be a quick chant and I would be on my way.
They tell me to take a seat on one of the plastic chairs that lined the wall. I sit and a young, intense Indian dude teaches me how to say the chant, barking at me to repeat after him. He doesn’t provide any explanation to the chant or even the reason for it. After I say the chant he hands me this long, wooden necklace with lots of beads - a sort of rosary.
Intense Indian Dude demonstrates how to use the beads. He stresses that I must only use my right hand to hold the beads and to use my thumb and middle finger to move from bead to bead in order to track the amount of chants I have completed.
The whole time I’m thinking: Dude, I’m fucking Filipino. I was raised praying the Rosary. Who do you think you’re talking to?
The Catholic Rosary consists of 50 beads (53 with the intro prayer). The Hare Krishna version has 108 beads.
My plan: To chant really fast and get the fuck out of there.
So im chanting. While I’m chanting I begin to get really angry. Angry at myself for being such a pushover and angry that they were making me do this.
I chant faster and faster with no idea of what I’m saying. After about 50 chants, a surprisingly calm feeling washes over me.
After completing my 108 chants, Intense Indian Dude asks if I feel stress free after doing the chanting. I look him in the eye and tell him that I was stress free before I chanted.
He kind of just looks at me and I leave for my well deserved pani puri.
Do You Like Bob Marley?
After visiting Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, the hallowed spot where the Buddha attained enlightenment over 2600 years ago, I was feeling really zen, and irritable at the same time. It’s fucking hot in India.
My tour guide leads me to a nearby Nepalese Buddhist Temple. Im not really interested, but I take a quick look inside.
Almost immediately, I am approached by a young Indian man. He asks me where I’m from and goes on to tell me a bit about the temple. From past experiences, I’m already wary of this man and know where this is leading to.
Once he completes his pleasantries, he tells me about his shop that is not too far from where we are.
And there it is.
I lose interest immediately and he notices I am no longer paying attention to him.
He goes from 0 to 100 real quick.
The Indian man starts going off about me not trusting him because he is too friendly (Duh), and that he just wants to show me his shop.
I’m sick of the games and blatantly tell him I’m just not interested.
He calms down then asks if I like Bob Marley. My guide and I begin to walk out the temple. The Indian man follows us and tells me he has some good marijuana that many Americans and Canadians like.
WTH?!
I tell him again that I’m not interested and he finally walks away.
Ummmmm…Is That A Dead Body?
A must do in Varanasi is to take a boat ride at dawn on the Ganges River. It was definitely one of the highlights during my time in the holy city.
There were pilgrims bathing away a lifetime of sins in the water. I saw people washing clothes, meditating, performing puja (acts of worship). We even parked our boat in front of Manikarnika, the major cremation ghat in Varanasi, for a few minutes.
What surprised me the most was as our boat was slowly chugging along the Ganges, our loins vibrating from the pulse of the engine, I saw a dead body float past.
A motherfucking dead body.
I knew the person was dead because the legs and lower torso were sticking out of the water, while the head was submerged underwater for a really long fucking time.
I looked around the boat. Did anybody else see that shit?
No one seemed to have a look of shock on their face. Then I saw a tourist in another boat take a picture of the body as it floated closer to them.
Ok good. I’m not crazy.
On a walking tour of Varanasi I learned from my guide that there are five types of people who can’t be cremated: pregnant women, children, sadhus (or holy persons), lepers, and those that have died from a snake bite. For those people, a rock is tied to their body and they are thrown into the river.
Cremation is costly, so those that cannot afford it will throw their partially cremated loved ones into the Ganges.
I tried to wrap my head around India’s views on death, but...that was some shit.
Slick Motherfuckers
The guide for my Buddhist Pilgrimage tour offered to have one of his friends take me on a walking tour of Varanasi. I tell him I’m not interested but the next day he shows up with his friend, Danesh.
So I go with it. I don’t have any plans anyway. I immediately tell Danesh “No silk shops.” Varanasi is known for its silk products and pashmina scarves. One major scam is that tour guides will take you to shops, where they will pressure you into a sale and get commission from your purchased products.
When I tell him this, he seems offended. He tells me that that is not what he is about. I feel bad for my comment. I just can’t seem to trust anyone. It’s exhausting to decipher who you can trust and who is trying to take advantage of you. I relax and decide to let my guard down a little bit. We proceed with the tour.
Danesh does a good job. He is knowledgeable and even takes me to Manikarnika, the major cremation ghat.
A major piece of advice that I read in my guidebook and online, was to resist brahmins’ (a Hindu priest) offers to “show you a better view” at the burning ghats. This will always end up in the brahmin demanding a ridiculously high “donation.”
As described, a brahmin offers to take me to the cremation floor.
First off, I know what that will lead to, and second, with my western view, I felt that the cremation process was a private affair for the families. I wanted to be respectful, despite the fact that cremations are done publicly here.
I tell the brahmin “No, thank you.” Danesh assures me that he does not have access to the cremation floor and that I would need to go with the brahmin for a more in depth experience. I, again, thank the brahmin for his offer, but firmly refuse.
The last stop on my walking tour was a visit to Vishwanath Temple. This is the most famous of the Hindu temples in Varanasi. It is dedicated to Shiva as lord of the universe. Officially, non Hindus cannot enter the temple, which includes most foreigners. If one declares an interest or curiosity in Hinduism, a foreigner may be allowed inside. From what I’ve read, it depends on how the police are feeling that day.
I follow Danesh and he leads me to a flower shop with a locker area just outside the temple.
He tells me bags and cameras are not allowed inside, so I will need to lock up my stuff here. A man dressed in all white appears. Danesh tells me this brahmin will take me into the temple and explain things to me. I can make a “donation” to him afterwards.
Damn. They got me.
They hand me a basket of flowers and say I need to bring an offering to Shiva. I pay the 150 rupees for the flower offering, although I’m pretty sure I’m being overcharged for that.
When the police at the temple ask why I want to visit, Danesh and the brahmin advise that I tell them I am interested in Hinduism and have come to India to pray.
The brahmin quickly leads me into the temple. I get patted down by a female security guard, who seemed to only focus on my boobs. I register with the police, who write my passport information down, and let me through, no questions asked.
In what was less than 10 minutes, the brahmin makes me cut through the long line of worshippers to make my offering to the Shiva lingam idol. You can’t linger long, or the police will pull you outside to make room for the next worshipper. Next, the brahmin tells me to sit on the carpet outside the idol’s housing and pray to Shiva for all the things I want. Since I don’t believe in Shiva, I just asked that he protect me from Indians trying to take advantage of me.
As I said, we left the temple as soon as we came in. We stop in front of another idol in the flower shop and the brahmin tells me to repeat a chant after him. We then open a bag of these small white candies that came with the flower offering I purchased. He places a few in my hand, and tells me to eat them. I oblige. I’ve seen this done before.
I get my things, take out my wallet and hand the brahmin 500 rupees. He tells me “Ma’am, the minimum donation is 1000 rupees. You are very lucky to go into this temple.”
“1000?!” I say angrily and immediately shoot the most dirty look I can to Danesh, who is observing nearby.
Feeling so defeated, I don’t even put up a fight.
I hand the brahmin another 500 rupees and quickly leave - seething.
Danesh leads me to my hotel, not saying a word to me. We arrive and I hand him 200 rupees for his services. Even though I hate him, he did tour me around.
He puts his hands up towards his chest, palms facing out, and tells me he doesn’t want my money. He says he could see how unhappy I am.
Danesh leaves and I remain in my hotel for the rest of the night until check out the next day.

Arnold Palmer obituary

Arnold Palmer obituary
Among the finest players within the good reputation for golf who won 73 tournaments
In almost any listing of causes of the current recognition and financial standing of golf, the name, and also the game, of Arnold Palmer are irresistibly linked.
Palmer, that has died aged 87, was probably the most charismatic golfers ever to experience the sport, your man who had been admired by ladies and a person to whom no play was ever impossible. She got into, and from, more trouble around the course than any one of his championship winning peers, and thus crazy were his recovery shots he rapidly attracted an enormous following.
The fans, the feet soldiers, who adopted him through good or ill grew to become referred to as Arnies Army plus they never deserted him. Despite the fact that his golf inevitably declined as we grow older, their fervour for him was undimmed, as well as around the US Seniors tour he almost always departed the very first tee having a bigger gallery than other people. Nor was his appeal limited to periodic fans. Jack Statter, golf correspondent for that Sun newspaper, used to be watching his beloved Arnie as he observed the great mans caddie had unsuccessful to exchange an enormous divot. He nipped in rapidly, trousered it, required it home and finally increased an entire front lawn from that certain small bit of turf. He known as it, proudly, Palmers Piece.
Such devotion was inspired through the apparent passion that Palmer had for that game. He’d a slashing, dashing style, frequently supported with a grin. He’d hit the ball hard, the conclusion to his swing resembling an area athlete attempting to break the planet record for that hammer throw. It wasn’t a swing that may be certain to keep your ball from the trees, nor made it happen. Jim Murray, the late and great La sportswriter, along with a fan of Ben Hogan was eventually watching Palmer when certainly one of his drives carried out in deep rough. Based on Murray the ball is at a stack of twigs leaving and i believe there is a defunct squirrel along with a beer can inside too. Anyway, Palmer walked over and looked lower at his ball. He then saw me standing there and requested: OK wise guy, what can your idol Hogan do here? I told him: Hogan wouldnt be around. Palmer chuckled striking the ball to the eco-friendly anyway. Trouble, he once stated, isn’t good to get involved with but fun to get away from. I guess there is a spot to be cautious but so far as Im concerned it is not around the course.
Palmer was among the couple of men to possess given a thing new meaning in golfs lexicon. In 1960 he won the united states Masters at Augusta by finishing birdie, birdie, birdie. The majority of the sportswriters known Palmer charging right through to the win, and that he duly grew to become renowned for his final round finishes, the Palmer Charge.
3 several weeks next Augusta win, also, he won the united states Open and again the charge is at evidence. After three models it looked as if he was lacking an opportunity, and prior to the final round he was discussing his prospects having a sportswriter friend, Bob Drum. What, wondered Palmer aloud, would a 65 provide for me this mid-day? Drum, a large, burly and blunt man, was dismissive. Nothing, he stated. Palmer, stung, recently drove the very first eco-friendly at Cherry Hillsides, Denver, an opening calculating 346 yards. She got towards the submit 30, returned in 35 and won that which was to become his only US Open. He won the Masters four occasions, in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964, and the seven majors were performed by winning outdoors championship two times.
Palmer was appropriately credited with reviving the virtually moribund Open by playing inside it the very first time at St Andrews in 1960. Couple of Americans thought it worth their while in the future and participate in the earliest of golfs major titles, but Palmer made the decision otherwise and encouraged a lot of his compatriots to help make the trip too. He was runner-in 1960 after which won two times in succession, in 1961 and 1962, at Royal Birkdale and Troon correspondingly. The outcome was immediate and immense. Just before Palmer, 3 Americans had won outdoors because the finish of world war ii: Sam Snead in 1946 and Hogan in 1953. Within the years 1961-81 they won 14 occasions, through which time outdoors took over as most cosmopolitan, and perhaps probably the most influential, championship on the planet.
Palmer was created in Latrobe, a little industrial town in western Pennsylvania, to Deacon, a golf professional in the Latrobe Country Club, and the wife, Doris. He started playing at Latrobe at 4 years old, began caddying at 11, and it was winning big local tournaments in the teens. He began their studies at Wake Forest College (now College), but was badly impacted by the dying of his room-mate Bud Worsham inside a vehicle accident, and left college throughout his senior year to start a 3-year stint using the US Coast Guard, mainly in Cleveland, Ohio, where he felt he could re-think his existence. After finishing using the Coast Guard he labored like a salesperson in Cleveland and rekindled his curiosity about golf, winning the united states Amateur championship in 1954 and turning pro exactly the same year.
The following decade was certainly one of heroic achievement, despite the fact that Palmers last win inside a major arrived 1964, his affect on the sport continued to be undiminished. He ongoing winning other big tournaments in america until his last victory there in 1973, and the last win in Europe is at 1975. Also, he ran their own tournament around the US tour, the Bay Hill Classic, which, due to his status, attracted fields just like might be found outdoors the majors. The programme for your event, locked in Orlando, Florida, transported advertisements for products endorsed by Palmer, varying from cans of oil to tractors, from Cadillacs to Rolexes, from private banks to batteries, and that he was making increased sums of cash around the back nine of his career than he did around the front.

Every so often people attempted to obtain him thinking about politics, also it was seriously suggested, in the height of his recognition, he run not only for governor of Florida as well as the US presidency. He never as it were considered such nonsense, for he would be a man much more happy in the living room or his workshop compared to any high office.
In the living room he’d a Moving Rock beer dispenser, well used when buddies known as round, as well as in his workshop he’d all of the tools any-time club professional ever possessed. He never was more happy than when trying out clubs, re-gripping or re-whipping a classic set, altering a golf club loft or adding some lead strip. Some who saw him during these surrounds recommended he could have been more happy in the existence to be the club pro his father was before him. However that point of view overlooked the fierce competitive instinct which, although it consumed him, always continued to be well-hidden.
There wasn’t any better illustration of that instinct once the draw introduced him and Jack Nicklaus together for that final round from the 1980 Masters. At that time Palmer hadn’t won a competitive sport for 5 years, and Nicklaus, uncle and great rival, was the reigning US PGA champion. It ought to happen to be no contest. But Palmers wife, Winnie, understood better. Arnie plays better when hes got something similar to this to light his fire, she stated. Palmer, whose reaction on hearing the draw have been to roar Ill whip his ass, recently shot a 69 to Nicklauss 73, finishing fifth. In the previous 18 attempts at Augusta he’d unsuccessful to interrupt 70. Palmer were built with a lengthy romance with Augusta, so when in The month of january 1997 he found that he’d cancer of the prostate, his first reaction ended up being to ask whether, if he’d the surgery immediately, he’d be fit to experience at Augusta in April. The solution was yes, and that he was.
Altogether Palmer won 73 tournaments worldwide, including greater than 60 around the US tour. Only Snead, Tiger Forest, Nicklaus and Hogan are in front of him for the reason that department. Twenty-nine of his victories were at that time 1960-63, which brought eventually to him being named Connected Press athlete from the decade for that 60s. He made an appearance in six Ryder Cups from 1961 to 1973, playing in 32 matches and winning 22, and it was two times a Ryder Cup captain inside a playing role in 1963 along with a non-playing capacity in 1975, winning both occasions.
He joined his last US Open at Oakmont, in Pennsylvania, in 1994 4 decades after first playing in case and the enthusiasm and durability is shown because the space between his US Amateur championship win in 1954 and the US Senior Open victory almost 30 years ago was 27 years. Possibly no professional ever loved the sport more. Most of the top players cannot bear to experience unless of course there’s an aggressive aspect, along with a round with buddies for pure enjoyment is unthinkable. But Palmer performed for that pleasure from it, as well as in his communication of this fact lay the key of his incredible recognition.
There is an event away Hill as he and also the then emerging Forest found one another around the practice range simultaneously. Palmer requested Forest if he was enjoying existence around the tour and Forest responded he was, because, the thing is, the factor is the fact that I enjoy play golf. Palmer smiled and responded: Well, thats good. I understand something about this. Its an issue Ive had for around the final six decades.
