23. "You're so squirmy!"

“C’mere!” Korra gathers Mako up in her arms. 

“Korra!” Mako twists side to side, wrists pressed firmly to his chest. He gets his knee between them and starts sliding off the bed, nearly free—

Korra wrestles him back down like it’s not even a thought. Mako’s breath leaves him a bit. He tries to console his wounded pride with the sight of Korra’s biceps.  

“You’re so squirmy!” She beams down at him as if she isn’t about to destroy him. Mako swallows nervously.

“What? Are you scared of the big, bad Avatar?” She holds her hands in menacing claws. Mako starts struggling harder. 

It’s not—he’s not scared of his girlfriend. He’s not. He is just very aware of her mischievous tendencies and how they tend to lean in a…sensitive direction. He’s pretty sure there’s a council of Korra’s in her brain egging her on to mess with him whenever her hands are free. She’s a cunning mastermind. Five steps and three elements ahead. 

The soft, squishy Mako locked behind eight vault doors loves it. The chase, the wrestling, the laughter, the trust, all of it. Mako Prime has to at least try and put up a fight. 

“Why?” Korra laughs. She leans down to kiss him, smiling into his mouth. God, she’s beautiful.

Focus, Mako. This is how she gets you.

“You know why!” He points an accusing finger. She laughs louder and laces their fingers together. 

“Do I?” Korra tilts her head. 

The war strategist in Mako’s head starts shuffling through battle plans. He’s got exactly two seconds until she starts giving his bluster any real thought…

He leans up and kisses her hard enough that she follows him down to the mattress. He threads his free hand into her hair—the other is still pinned to the mattress by Korra’s.

“That’s not—“ Korra pulls away for a moment— “This isn’t an answer, Makommph—“

Mako pats himself on the back for the distraction as he pulls her closer by the waist. Korra slips her hand beneath his shirt. Her calloused fingers drag just above his waistband—

Mako yelps. Korra blinks. 

Then she grins. 

Mako starts twisting again but she’s already got him pinned like this. She raises an eyebrow and starts tickling up his waist, beelining for his ribs. He falls into giggles as easily as he fell in love. Korra’s fingers trip higher, ignoring giggly protests and the weak slapping of his free hand.  

He tries to roll his hips and reverse their positions, but Korra clenches her thighs and doesn’t move. The best he can do is roll on his stomach and hide his face. 

“Well this isn’t going to help you.” Korra clambers atop his back and neatly shoves her hands under his arms. He shrieks and kicks his legs against that mattress.

“This is s-so much worse!” He laughs deep and tosses his head. 

“I know. Shouldn’t’ve turned over, huh?” She grins. She pulls out one of her hands from Mako’s death grip with some difficulty and worms it under him, reaching for his hips—

Mako finally, blissfully gives in.
