One handsome boy with a glass of wine from one video about Australia forced me.
Yes, yes, Mr. Ricciardo, I can't go to bed because of you.
✨️Imagine✨️
This story is in the style of "The Taming of the Scoundrel", that's just it...
Max hates every second of this trip. They've been on the road for two hours now. The dust of the dirt road does not allow the windows to be opened, so the driver turned on the air conditioner, which dries Max's mouth and nasal mucosa. The young man's mind is spinning with the idea of how to get rid of this place.
The fact is that Max Emilian Verstappen is rich and can afford anything he wants. He can buy anything for himself or for his beloved. His ex wanted this vineyard, she wanted to have her own business, she wanted to sell wine, spend her holidays in this mansion and fuck outdoors.
In the video, one of Max's employees (a handsome guy with a big nose, curls peeking out from under a hat and tanned skin) he danced in a barrel, in a barrel in which there were grapes, grapes that go to the production of wine. And all this is for the amusement of the rest of the staff.
But then she liked fucking the barkeeper at the club more. And Max kept the vineyard for himself. He wasn't fond of winemaking. He didn't even like wine, but the thought that his ex's dream was in his hands warmed his heart. Although sometimes Max realized that it was stupid. For example, he understands this right now after watching an Instagram video of his own winery.
What the hell?! Are they making fun of Max in this way? People will never buy this wine in their lives, Max will suffer losses, the winery will not pay off. In the end, the sale of this post may fail!
🍇🍇🍇
"You can't sell us!"
"Of course I'm not going to sell people, just the vineyard."
Daniel chuckled, but his expression didn't change. Actually, this Daniel turns out to be not such a jerk. He treats the workers well, and the winery is thriving under his leadership. But Max is still outraged by his dancing on grapes. Daniel's argument was that it was faster and more fun, and he supposedly washed his feet before that. But from Max's side, it turns out that Max wasted a lot of money on equipment for crushing grapes, which is not used.
"Everyone will receive the compensation promised under the contract, perhaps the new owner will even leave someone."
Daniel went to the railing of the terrace. He was leaning on the railing, looking at the vineyards and looked so damn good that Max periodically stopped thinking coherently.
"Come on, buddy. All these people don't just work here. They live here, they live this business, you can't just kick them out."
He was so damn attractive. Max found him in this terrace when this curly-haired charm dipped his nose into a glass of wine and then made some notes in a notebook next to it.
Daniel is attractive but not so attractive that Max decided to keep the winery for himself.
Buddy. Did he call him buddy?
"Did you call me a buddy?"
"Come on, you'll like this place as soon as you really appreciate it, and you won't treat it like a reminder of your ex."
"You're taking too much on yourself, mister Ricciardo."
"And you," Daniel poked a finger at Max's chest. "You've been clinging to your past, for old grudges, for too long. Stay here for a week and you will completely change your mind... Or you can continue to be a petty rich boy."
Max was going to break that finger and that pretty face, but first he's going to get this guy...
🍇🍇🍇
"Hurry up, we'll be late for the presentation."
"How overbearing."
"You like it."
"But I liked you right away."
"You didn't like this place a year ago."

the Browns skating James Brown was my favorite performance of the day - really good, really fun ❤️🔥 they do the splits on the ice together - the deep curves they’re drawing on the ice the whole time too🔥 they always had skating skills, but they’re skating bigger and with a bit more power. they might have scored higher if they skated later. Pate/Bye got higher PCS then them 👀
there are a lot of Saturday Night Fevers, Car Wash, James Brown. two teams doing Rich Man’s Frug from Sweet Charity - it’s so in Lauriault/LeGac’s wheelhouse that it feels perfect for them
Flores/Desyatov: the Twist, Jungle Boogie, and Great Balls of Fire - one from each decade, i guess? they feel so chaotic lol sometimes it works, like the way they go into the lift - and other times it feels disorganized?
Browns: James Brown Get Up Offa That Thing. awesome- they wore older costumes, as did other teams
Pate/Bye: Le Freak, Car Wash, Shake Your Groove Thing
Neset/Markelov: ABBA - Waterloo, Fernando, Gimme Gimme Gimme
Fabbri/Ayer: Elvis - Jailhouse Rock, Suspicious Minds, Blue Suede Shoes - looking good - they always feel like a broader strokes team to me, primary colors - it’s not what i gravitate to personally, but they skated well
Annabelle Morozov/Jeffrey Chen: also James Brown Get Up Offa That Thing, I Feel Good - they’ve gelled much faster than he did with his previous partners. they had the tough luck of skating just after the Browns, and this program isn’t good by comparison. idk about MIDA choreo 😬
Bashynska/Beaumont: after seeing more of the RDs for this season, it feels like this isn’t doing them any favors
Tkachenko/Kiliakov: Adriano Celentano - Svalutation, Amore no - nobody can say they’re not unique. i’d never heard of this artist, but i guess he was a huge deal and sold 150 million records. it has a different sound from everyone else, and she’s wearing a dress that looks like Mondrian
Larson/Kapran: the other Rich Man’s Frug - this program was fun and had a lot of character, but i’m surprised it scored as high as it did
Lily/Nathan: both songs by The Commodores - Brick House and oof i’m blanking on the other one. i feel like they were underscored a bit - they’re performing bigger, looking good- maybe the song choices aren’t distinctive enough? Pham/Spiridonov: Dirty Dancing - Do You Love Me, Crying, Wipe Out - tailor made to show what they can do while disguising what they don’t do well yet. probably ranked higher than they really skated
Dozzi/Papetti: Tequila and Jump in Line - i loveeee this - what could be a novelty program is an adorable dance program- they calibrated this so well - the choreo, the costumes, and these two 😘
Nosovitskys: Saturday Night Fever - their coach is an ISU tech specialist and they often look kind of frantic because they seem to propel themselves with short choppy strokes. idgi
Fournier/Zhu: Back Street City Lights, Kung Fu Fighting
Alyssa Robinson/Jacob Portz: Saturday Night Fever - they were a tiny bit late for their warmup - came hurrying in with Madi and Adrian - don’t know what happened- they really get into character with this dance style- they, especially him have a sense of cheekiness about it- she had a fall in the MiSt today unfortunately
Roberts/Alis: Rolling Stones - Miss You, Satisfaction - they’ve grown a lot since moving to IAMO
Shilling/Baeten: James Brown - I Feel Good, Super Bad - hello new IAMO team, I wasn’t familiar with them from before- looking forward to more
Ritter/Brykalov: Boney M - Daddy Cool. Fever- good to have them back♥️

The Ford Anglia reached Porto Azzurro at Tartosa unseen.
Saiwa parked and they went to the 'Moda Capoliveri' first to buy new outfits to avoid to attract too much attention. (Saiwa is the only one of the boys with a driver's license.)
The way Jebs looks at his Giigs <3
Then they went over to 'Hotel Elvis'. (the (a bit) sad but true (and short) story behind this Hotel and it's name -> here)
The Council is setting up a public viewing event for the execution of Ji Ho... Saiwa is nervous/anxious/trying to not freak out because they don't have a plan but Jeb seems confident and Saiwa loves him for this.
Arturo is Hector's brother. He is often found near the swimming restaurant because the guests feed him the best bites (because they think he's adorable ^^')
'Azzurro, Il pomeriggio è troppo azzurro e lungo per me Mi accorgo di non avere più risorse senza di te E allora Io quasi quasi prendo il treno e vengo, vengo da te Il treno dei desideri nei miei pensieri all'incontrario va'
'Blue, the afternoon is too blue and to long for me. I realize my resources fade away, without you, and so I nearly took the train and rode, rode to you, but the course of my desires goes backwards'
Azzurro - Adriano Celentano (I was unable to find a proper translation out there -.-)

Finally!
Today is the day my mood has finally shifted! I finally realized what I need to do to be contented and happy.
Yes, I heard it a million time before. I actually need to care about myself first. But yesterday was the first day I put it into action.
I just decided to say what I actually want to my man. Not pretending to be okay if I’m not. I had a pretty shitty mood yesterday, so he offered to eat out somewhere. We ended up getting delicious burgers at Grott Spot. They were soo good!
The funny thing is, the last time we had our ‘serious talk’ that was exactly what he asked me to do - to tell him what I want. I think it has always been a problem within our relationship. For some reason I felt not eligible to ask him to give me what I really want. I always thought it’s better for me to adjust to anyone else’s desires, including his. Or it could start after the USA, because I felt guilty for leaving him for a year..
But in a romantic relationship it doesn’t work in the long run, it turns out. I became so emerged in his desires and needs, I forgot what mine are.
And we both felt so good after dinner. We watched the movie I chose - with Adriano Celentano. Such optimistic vibes. Real good comedy. It was hard to believe it’s 43 years old… Then I turned on my predator mode and attacked him. He was already sleeping. He didn’t resist, though. On the contrary, as it should be. That felt much better than many times before.
I even woke up with a much better mood than I did for the last couple of weeks. I even almost stopped thinking about her. For some reason, these thoughts didn’t (and don’t) hurt so much anymore. I just don’t feel like focusing on them anymore. I don’t feel like it’s needed. That’s such a relief, to be honest.
I still was kinda nervous today, because of the load of tasks I gotta do, so I slept a lot again. Took my brain pills (could they be the reason of my mood change? I don’t think so, though, cause today’s only the second day I take them). Olga called, we talked for an hour or so - it felt so good and warm. I’m so grateful to her for being by my side all this time.
I couldn’t start learning, so I played the piano for about an hour too. My cat kept meowing all day long, so I became pretty irritated. The louder I played, the louder she meowed. I ended up playing badly, because I couldn’t concentrate.
The apartment was a mess. I didn’t have energy to unload the dishwasher, to load it again (the sink was full), to clean the stove, to turn on the vacuum cleaner in the bathroom, to put the dried clothes away, to take out the trash, to wash some more clothes and to wash the cat’s carrier. Wow, some many things to do around the house… And all these things kept bothering me. So I remembered Salma Hayek’s advice to turn on the music and dance until you feel good if you don’t. I plugged in my headphones and turned on Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love the way you lie’. I just sang along, not caring about if I do it right. If my neighbors hear me (I still thought they could come and complain, but they didn’t, so it’s a success!). I think I listened to it and sang for about 10 times or more. It gave me energy to start doing all these things around the house. Then I turned on other songs, and almost all of them sounded great. It’s a sign of me having good mood, I noticed.
I managed doing all of the chores in just about 1.5 hours. Like a university lecture. I felt soooo much better! That should be my therapy. Listening to the songs I like and singing along. That’s what sparks joy in me!
That’s why it was easy for me to understand that I want an onigiri, so I went and bought it. It was delicious.
When my man came home, he told me about his day. He had a pretty rough time at work today. I tried to support him without immersing into his mood, and I think I managed to do it. He spilled his anger out, threw some socks in the air and kicked his backpack, but after that he seemed much calmer. That’s good.
I continued my studies and did that for a couple of hours. Then I got too tired and laid down on the couch with him. His warmth feels so good. Touching, hugging and cuddling with my man is another thing that brings me joy.
I don’t feel sleepy now, unfortunately, that’s why I’m writing this post. Just felt like I want to remember today in the future - remember the day, when I felt good.
Oh, and today was my mom’s birthday! Maybe In getting older or something, but it’s so nice not to feel rebellious towards her anymore. I just feel love and want to call her, share with her and make her happy. It’s such a nice feeling.
Well, that should wrap it up. I like today, I want more of such days.

10 italian songs that are terribly horny
Kind of a sequel of this post I wrote about the three Italian songs every Italian knows without fail, here comes another in the same vein and, as you might guess from the title of the post, they all are horny.
Because there’s absolutely no need to title your fic about Nicky losing his virginity after a Hozier song, when the Italian music scene of the 1970s has already blessed us with Cristiano Malgioglio!
Beware that this list features: threesomes, implied choking, implied masturbation, lengthy descriptions of dicks, and a whole lot of “dying”.
So, if you’re new to the Italian music scene, I bet you now have two questions: who is Malgioglio, and why is that “dying” in between quotes?
Cristiano Malgioglio is an Italian songwriter who has been working in the music industry since the early Seventies. Now known mostly for his flamboyant style and white strand of hair in his otherwise completely black head, he was a close friend of Fabrizio de Andrè, who was actually the one who introduced him to the music world. He has written a lot of songs that are LGBT+ themed and has always been very open about his sexuality, to the point that he has never even felt the need of coming-out. Out of the ten songs here presented, he has written three of them, and one of them is about one of his boyfriends.
As the censorship didn’t allow for song lyrics to be too explicit, songwriters and singers had found a way around it: rather than saying “coming” or “orgasming”, they would go with “dying”, which was a lot more elegant and could be inserted in literally every song without the censors being able to complain. And, trust me, there’s a lot of dying.
Here is the list, from the least horny to the most horny.
Chi Non Lavora (1970), by Adriano Celentano
Link to lyrics and translation here.
Commonly called Autunno Caldo (Hot Autumn), the workers strike that begun in 1969 and dragged itself into the August 1970 greatly influenced this piece (but for all the wrong reasons). Workers were demanding safer working conditions, which had been completely ignored up until that point. As the days went on and the more people joined the protests, the police got more and more violent, to the point that they had begun shooting people on sight. This caused a huge uproar from the protestors, and when the voice that people had been shot and harmed by the law enforcement, even more workers and even students joined the fight. Through a year of strikes, they forced the Italian government to create a new set of laws that would protect both workers and students.
The song mocks this movement: the singer complains about the fact that, since he is on a strike two days out of three, he cannot give his wife enough money and therefore she’s going on a strike too and won’t have sex with him. Basically this song is nothing but the woes of a privileged, extremely wealthy man who thinks that people protesting for the rights of a safe work environment is inopportune and stupid.
The only reason why I included this song is because “Chi non lavora non fa l’amore” (Those who don’t work don’t make love) is still very much used to this day. If you want a piece of media that actually explores the protests and the work environment of the time, I suggest watching La Classe Operaia va in Paradiso (The Working Class goes to Heaven), a movie from 1971.
10 Ragazze per Me (1969), by Lucio Battisti
Link to lyrics and translation here.
Lucio Battisti is a national treasure and if I’ll ever do more of these, he’s surely going to end up in more of them. Whereas De Andrè would write more traditional music and focus on the lyrics, Battisti’s music was a lot more danceable and his lyrics a lot lighter, usually focusing on loneliness and heartbreaks rather than social issues.
In this song, the protagonist is bragging about how he wants ten girls for himself, all for different reasons (one because she knows how to dance, the other because she’s a virgin, that other one because she has been with everybody but him). It is soon revealed, however, that the only reason why he’s doing it is because he’s still thinking about a very specific girl who broke his heart.
Remembering the note above, peep that “And red lips to die upon”.
Gelato al Cioccolato (1979), by Pupo
Link to lyrics and translation here.
First song written by Cristiano Malgioglio and also the one about his ex! And yes, it was sung by another man, but... oh, well. The lyrics are the same.
I feel like the only thing I need to say, about this song, is to quote it directly: “Chocolate ice cream, sweet and a little salty”. And that’s it, because the subtext is right there and it’s impossible to miss what it implies.
What I think should be added is the fact that the singer had absolutely no idea of what the song was about. Like none. It was only in 2007 that Malgioglio told him that he had been inspired to write it after spending a torrid summer in Tunisia, where he had gotten a boyfriend with whom he’d often get ice cream.
Carlo Martello Ritorna dalla Battaglia di Poitiers (1967), by Fabrizio de Andrè
Link to lyrics and translation here.
Translating this song absolutely murdered me: Paolo Villaggio, one of De Andrè’s best friends and an extremely important figure in Italian entertainment history, wrote it to play over Middle Ages sounding music, so the words chosen and the way sentences are structured are reminiscing of that time, and it was incredibly hard to find English words that matched.
This said, it’s possibly one of De Andrè’s most light-hearted songs (probably because he and Villaggio wrote it while their wives were giving birth to their sons), even if it does mention social issues.
King Charles Martel comes home from Poitiers but has lost the key to his wife’s chastity cage, so he doesn’t even go home before looking for another girl that can quench his thirst. He sees a beautiful maiden taking a bath and, seduced, convinces her to have sex with him. It is only when he has finished that she reveals that she’s actually a prostitute and now he has to pay her, but he runs away before doing so (but still after having complained about the rising prices).
The lyrics of this song were censored and fought against by the censorship so much that, even to this day, records with the uncensored version are extremely difficult to find.
Una Carezza in un Pugno (1968), by Adriano Celentano
Lyrics and translation here.
Yes, another Celentano song. I don’t like him either, it’s just that we cannot get rid of him for some reason.
Anyways, here we begin to get into hotter waters, as this song is about a man asking his girlfriend to think of him while she masturbates. Of course, since he cannot be left out of the question, he will think of her while he jerks off too.
Basically, unlike what a first read might make you think, the “fist” he makes while thinking of her is not because he wants to beat her up.
Il Triangolo (1978), by Renato Zero
Lyrics and translation here.
Renato Zero is another extremely flamboyant personality of the Italian music scene, and “Il Triangolo” is one of the songs of his that are best known.
As the title may suggest, this song is about a threesome. The protagonist goes on a date with their boyfriend and finds out that he has brought a second man, with the intention of convincing said protagonist to have a threesome. Although at first they need a little convincing, the protagonist then agrees to it and finds out they enjoy it a lot, to the point of coming to the conclusion that “Geometry is not a crime”!
Kobra (1980), by Donatella Rettore
Lyrics and translation here.
This song is about dicks, there’s no way around it and there’s nothing else to say. The singer sees a certain man and thinks about his dick, getting wet and fantasizing about the many things she could do with said dick. That’s it.
Pensiero Stupendo (1978), by Patty Pravo
Lyrics and translations here.
Second threesome song!
Unlike “Il Triangolo”, this song is a lot more subtle. It’s clear what the singer is talking about, but the lyrics are not as on the nose and leave more to the audience to feel it, rather than hearing it through words.
The song begins with the three people part of the threesome that are already doing it, and are still doing it by the time the song ends. It’s not about the act in and on itself, but more about the sensations it brings.
Ancora ancora ancora (1978), by Mina
Lyrics and translation here.
Second song written by Malgioglio!
Mina is probably one of the best known Italian singers, as her voice is said to be one of the best in recorded history and has an impressive rage of three octaves, so it really says something, the fact that this piece is so difficult that even her voice broke while holding a note (in an incredible way that only gives it character, but still).
The lyrics play with the fact that in Italian the word “ancora” can be translated and understood as “still”, “again”, and “more”. I couldn’t really give it justice in the translation, but it’s as if she was saying “Your hands still”, “Your hands again”, and “More of your hands” at the same time, and this kind of logic is repeated for every “ancora” she sings.
Even if the lyrics are suggestive, what was censored in this case was the video (the one linked with the song), as the close shots of the singer’s face, and especially of her mouth, were considered to be too sensual to be freely aired.
L’importante è Finire (1975), by Mina
Lyrics and translation here.
Third and last piece written by Malgioglio!
The story behind this song is a little nebulous, but I have read that apparently Malgioglio wrote it for Dori Ghezzi, De Andrè’s wife, but that that project never came to life and, in the meantime, he had managed to meet Mina, and had tried to get her to sing it. But... not sure if this story is directly related to the song in question or not.
Anyways, even for this piece it’s impossible to escape it’s meaning, to the point that, even if it didn’t contain any forbidden words, it was censored anyways for weeks, forbidding radios to air it and Mina to sing it on TV. However, people were so eager to listen to it that it still managed to climb the charts and was, eventually, allowed on air.

Sanremo Italian Song Festival: love at first sight
It all started with Inna, my Russian teacher. I thought that she had had enough of my tardiness, lack of concentration, yawning, incomplete homework; while I prepared myself for a severe chastisement, I still tried a “You are right, from tomorrow I will put more effort”. Much to my surprise, Inna, instead looked at me with resignation and started singing “Parole, parole, parole…” (words, words, words..). I said, “Pardon?” And she answered, in Russian, “Slova.”
“How do you know the Italian singer Mina?” I asked her. Inna soon abandoned our language class in favour of a nostalgic monologue about her memories of watching Sanremo Italian Song Festival on channel 1 of Soviet State TV when she was a young girl. I started reviewing the images that I had registered recently, but not put into the “correct” context: posters advertising Al Bano’s concert (October 2013), Celentano’s songs on the radio, and being apostrophized with the gag from the song of singer Toto Cutugno “Un Italiano? Un Italiano vero?” (“An Italian? A real Italian?”), all in Moscow. I surfaced from my thoughts and in her dulcet, calming tone Inna continued. “The streets were empty, people no matter their age, were glued to the television set, from grandparents their grandchildren. We girls would make sketches from the clothes and would sew identical ones for ourselves. We found it most unusual that Romina was taller than Al Bano, so we would gaze at her feet but there were no high heels, she was wearing flats! Was she a giant? He a midget? We ignored the height issue and concentrated on the fashion and decided we liked them too, the “balekti”, ballet flats. We would sing along, although we didn’t understand what the lyrics meant, except for ‘Felicità’ (happiness). My love for the Italian language was born with Sanremo, and consequently the reason for studying it at University. Italian is a sweet, mellow language, which makes it remarkably close to the essence of the Russian soul. For us Russians, Sanremo was a breath of fresh air, a window on Europe, the only one on the Western world. The Festival of the canzonets, all about love, passion and happiness, was the only western TV show the Soviet government would allow to be aired”.
The reason why Soviet TV broadcasted the Festival is a mystery that maybe finds its roots in the Russian love for classical music, for the “Bel Canto”, in the first cultural agreement between Italy and the USSR in 1960. Already in 1965, Gianni Morandi and Rita Pavone were with the Cantagiro (Italian summer Festival) at Gorky Park in Moscow. Anyway, no matter the reasoning behind it, what is hard fact is that the Festival of Sanremo is a piece of musical
heritage enjoyed as much by Russians as it is enjoyed by Italians. In 1973 the radio transmitted a programme about former Festival winners like Mudugno, Bobby Solo and Peppino di Capri. Inna’s father recorded this production with a reel-to-reel tape recorder and then made pirated prints. That’s how “Non ho l’età “ (“I’m not old enough”) by Gigliola Cinquetti conquered the whole apartment block. The first time songs from the Festival were aired on television was in 1982, during a show about “foreign melodies”. Ten songs were shown in 1983 and in 1984 programmes were made exclusively about the Festival, which were then aired in the whole Soviet Union giving the performers universal glory! From 1987 onwards, San Remo has become an important part of the Russian Kultura, keeping pace with Perestrojka, and two evenings each year have been dedicated to the Festival. In 1989 clips of all the winners were broadcasted. In 1990 all of the competitors were examined. In 1991 and 1992 both of the two Finals were shown from start to finish. From 1994 to 1998, when Russia was hit by a crisis, Sanremo Festival adapted itself and was transmitted in a limited version. Silence for 15 years and then…Sanremo returned on the crest of a wave in 2013, shown live and for the full five nights of its entire length! This exciting event saw Toto Kutunio performing together with the Red Army Choir singing “L’Italiano”. Furthermore Andrei Malakhov, (a popular Russian TV presenter), dedicated his show “Tonight” to the Festival. On that occasion he reminded of: “In 1987 Sanremo Festival was shown purposefully on Holy Easter night, on 19th of April (to prevent people from going to Mass). My parents were absolutely against me watching that show “on that very holy night”, so I had to record the concert and watch it later”.
After Malakhov’s show was aired, the demand for holidays to Italy and Sanremo went through the roof in travel agencies. Italian songs from that era onwards were all the rage into every single radio and TV show, and the records signed by the State label, Melodia, were everywhere. Al Bano and Romina Power, Ricchi e Poveri, Pupo, Mattia Bazar, Riccardo Fogli and much more were invited for music tours in Moscow, Leningrad and in many, many Soviet Republics until they were finally given the privilege of being awarded a show in the Kremlin in 2005 – the ultra-special “Sanremo Gathers Its Friends.” This also involved singers that were less well known in Russia, like Amedeo Minghi and Anna Oxa, to perform together with famous Russian singers, like Valeria, Nikolay Baskov amongst others. The decision of showing San Remo in the 80s was an absolute goldmine of opportunities for a handful of artists that, maybe inadvertently, wrote the soundtrack of Russian history and inspired the love for Made in Italy in the ex Soviet Union.
The moral is: Sanremo was born during the Cold War. It grew throughout the Soviet era, survived its decline and blossomed in the global age.
A “Real Italian” miracle: long life to Sanremo – truly Russian too!

(*) the title literally means: “They Killed Spider-Man” and the lyrics are just about... trying to understand who actually did it. also i’m pretty sure if you’re over 18 and you don’t know the entire song by heart, they revoke your citizenship (**) this is half in Italian and half in English, so it might be more accessible if you don’t speak Italian and want to understand (at least partially) what the lyrics are about (***) Daniele Silvestri said FUCK American imperialism back in ‘02, we stan a visionary king (****) when this song first came out i was far too young to pay attention to the lyrics, but listening to it now i’m honestly surprised ppl didn’t talk abt it more at the time, bc they’re essentially abt being a closeted gay man and Tiziano Ferro came out years later but i mean... come on. it’s not like the clues weren’t there from the beginning (the title literally means “The Things You Don’t Say”) (*****) Subsonica are actually in the top 3 of my fave bands ever. i don’t talk much abt them on here bc their fandom is minuscule but they really do mean a lot to me, i’ve seen them live like 6 times and it was hard not to put their entire discography on here, bc i basically like all of their songs and i genuinely think they’re one of the best bands we have (and, from what i’ve heard, they seem like lovely ppl as well) (******) as much as i loved Mahmood’s Soldi and i’m glad it won, this would’ve actually been my winner for Sanremo 2019. i think it’s one of the best italian songs of the last 5 years and Ghemon deserves FAR more credit for it (it’s about domestic violence but the lyrics are so delicate and compassionate, and the video is visually stunning) (*******) Ghali grew up in Milan but his family is Tunisian, so the lyrics are a mixture of Italian, Arabic and French (********) Yane is a local artist from my area and i’m honestly gutted he’s not more well-known bc i think he’s really talented. even though this song is from a few years ago i still think it should’ve been a hit and i can’t accept the fact that nobody knows abt it lmao (*********) this is another band nobody seems to know abt and it was actually my parents who introduced it to me. i’m not even sure they’re still active anymore, but i still think they’re criminally underrated (**********) my winner for Sanremo 2020. i still can’t get over the fact that she ended up 7th!! also, she kicks ass in general and her new album is great from start to finish, so maybe give her a chance and stream This Is Elodie, pls and ty.

English/Gibberish
By Evan Stewart on May 24, 2018
One major part of introducing students to sociology is getting to the “this is water” lesson: the idea that our default experiences of social life are often strange and worthy of examining. This can be challenging, because the default is often boring or difficult to grasp, but asking the right questions is a good start (with some potentially hilarious results).
Take this one: what does English sound like to a non-native speaker? For students who grew up speaking it, this is almost like one of those Zen koans that you can’t quite wrap your head around. If you intuitively know what the language means, it is difficult to separate that meaning from the raw sounds.
That’s why I love this video from Italian pop singer Adriano Celentano. The whole thing is gibberish written to imitate how English slang sounds to people who don’t speak it.
youtube
Another example to get class going with a laugh is the 1990s video game Fighting Baseball for the SNES. Released in Japan, the game didn’t have the licensing to use real players’ names, so they used names that sounded close enough. A list of some of the names still bounces around the internet:
The popular idea of the Uncanny Valley in horror and science fiction works really well for languages, too. The funny (and sometimes unsettling) feelings we get when we watch imitations of our default assumptions fall short is a great way to get students thinking about how much work goes into our social world in the first place.

Compulsive listening tag game
I was tagged by @universe-on-her-shoulders
List 10 songs that you currently cannot stop listening to and then tag (10) people
(These are in no particular order; most links go to YouTube so you can check them out. Links work in North America but may not elsewhere.)
1. The Hockey Song - George Canyon (cover of the Stompin’ Tom Connors classic, which is Canada’s unofficial second national anthem)
2. Tutto a mia madre - Adriano Celentano (Italian-language cover of the Bill Haley song “Burn That Candle”)
3. Anarchy in Bedrock - Green Jelly (I didn’t mean for this one to get stuck in my head but this week’s episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was set in 1970s London at the height of punk rock culture and Anarchy in the UK was featured. And the way my brain works I ended up having Green Jelly’s Flintstones tribute stuck in there instead...)
4. People Like Us - John Goodman with Talking Heads (from one of my favourite musicals of all time, the David Byrne-directed True Stories from 1986. John Goodman, pre-Roseanne, pre-Blue Brothers, and in one of his first starring roles, sang this great song which, sadly, wasn’t released at the time because a version with Byrne on vocals was released instead. It eventually got a release about 10 years ago. I really hope True Stories gets a blu-ray someday.)
5. Tomorrow is a Long Time - Elvis Presley (the best recording Elvis ever made was this obscure 1966 cover of Odetta Holmes’ adaptation of the Bob Dylan song. The record company had no idea what to do with a 5-minute-long folk song by the guy who was currently recording stuff like Yoga is as Yoga Does, so it was buried in the back of the soundtrack album for Spinout. His fabled comeback would have happened two years earlier if this tune had been released properly.)
6. kapētipisk ka-nah-nīmihitonaw - Dolores Sand (I discovered this wonderful track a couple years ago. Recorded in Saskatchewan, this is a translation of my all-time favourite song into Plains Cree as part of a project to promote the preservation of the Cree language. The song: Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock! Website link is to the Cree Literacy Project where you can listen to the track online and follow along with the lyrics.)
7. The Last Saskatchewan Pirate - Arrogant Worms (Forget Pirates of the Caribbean. Here in Canada we have Pirates of the Saskatchewan! There are a zillion covers on YouTube, but the Arrogrant Worms originated it. )
8. Dig That Rock ‘n’ Roll - The Stargazers (One of my favourite original tracks from this British rockabilly group established in the 1980s that was very much cast in the Comets mould. I’ve known the piano player on this for close to 30 years.)
9. Monster Mash - Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers. (It was Halloween not long ago and I found this TV performance by Bobby from American Bandstand. Trivia: about 25 years later a movie was made based upon this song, and Pickett - who was also an actor - starred as the mad scientist. Of course he got to perform his song in that, too. The audio on the video link is the original record but he was just lip-syncing on the TV show anyway.)
10. The Age of Elegance - Ron Grainer. This is the demo version of Grainer’s famous theme to The Prisoner. It was later redone with added orchestra to make it more bombastic for the TV show, but I’ve always loved this version which was first released in the late 1980s.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this. (You don’t need to go into detail like I did. I just felt verbose today).

I totally love this!
1. My favourite places are the country side and the mountains, in Italy and in Russia.
2. I like both, but it's a bit pricey to travel.
3. It does, Sicily has some of the best beaches.
4. Cassata Siciliana, I can never get enough of it!
5. I don't really listen to Italian music or Russian, but I really like "Il Ragazzo della Via Gluck" by Adriano Celentano.
6. Anything sung by Sfera Ebbasta.
7. Falò (It's a word that indicates when friends meet around a pitch fire, but stands only for pitch fire), and I only have this one in mind (might be the quarantine).
8. I don't really, but I easily confuse the people that live in northern Italy by their accents.
9. I'd like to visit Switzerland, and maybe France, also China and India (once all this mess has gone by)
10. Cazzo, everyone knows this one Italian word, but I often use the Sicilian version, which is minchia. I don't use Russian swear words.
11. Andrea Camilleri, who created one of the most loved Sicilian characters, Commissario Montalbano and all his adventures, which inspired and actual TV series, that Camilleri watched with interest himself, sadly he passed away last year.
12. I think they're fine, but translation always loses it's touch and magic once translated, so I always try to read books or watch movies in their original language, if I can.
13. I'm half Russian and half Italian, so there are pretty much a bunch of superstitions going on, but the one I'm always lectured upon is by my mother (Russian), the superstition says that if you whistle inside a house, it means you have money, you are careless, so you don't whistle indoors if you don't want to end up poor.
14. I like some Italian movies, but it's mostly comedy. I like historical Russian movies.
15. Italian memes about the quarantine (atm), specifically about the president of the minister counsel, Giuseppe Conte. I don't follow the Russian memes tho.
16. "Ahhh Italiaaa, pasta and meatballs, mafiaa" please stop, I hate all of them, especially the Sicilian ones where it's only about mafia and the Godfather, there are normal people too. And the Russian "vodka, comrade, communists, suka blyat!"
I get it, they say those last words a lot, but stop.
17. I am, who would not be? Everywhere you go has it's history!
18. Yep I do speak Sicilian, even though I have a weird accent.
19. I like them, and I absolutely love the history behind their becoming a part of the nation.
20. Soccer for both Italy and Russia, but Italy is more hardcore, and there are very few people who don't like it (I am one of them), it's like football or baseball for Americans!
21. Pizza, everyone loves it, and bomboloni, everyone deserves to have one! (Try the cherry ones)
22. The art and the history of Italy makes me proud (if you haven't got it already lol), but the actual people make me ashamed. While Russians confuse me, I sometimes love them, and sometimes I am ashamed by them, but I love the nature.
23. Wine and beer, in particular the pale ales, wine goes along with food, while beer is good while in company are the main rules in Italy. In Russia you mainly drink beer, and vodka is for family parties and celebrations (and not everyone drinks it, I personally hate it).
24. France for Italy, nothing added, it's like with England and Scotland, it's an eternal war. Russians... well, ya 'now, it's Americans *shoulders up*.
25. I was born in Russia and grew up in Italy, while still going up and visit the country, I like my placement!
26. It does, and I hate it, because Italians are stereotyped like crazy, mobster or high class designer or artist of some sort for my Italian part, while the Russian part gets the mobster part only, or are part of some sketchy organisation, they only drink vodka, and speak with an horrible accent (hey Holly, just get an actor that can actually speak Russian!), and are these cold blooded killers you can always rely on on taking out a target.
27. Idrk
28. Sicily has plenty of beaches and mountains, and some lakes, while Russia is full of lakes and rivers, but very little mountains, it has mainly forests. I like the Sicilian countryside.
29. Sicily (and most of the southern part of Italy) has beef with the Northern part of Italy, the same old North Vs South thingy.
30. Yep, my mother is Russian and my father is Italian, I have some cousins from Spain from my father's family side.
“hi, I’m not from the US” ask set
given how Americanized this site is, it’s important to celebrate all our countries and nationalities - with all their quirks and vices and ridiculousness, and all that might seem strange to outsiders.
1. favourite place in your country?
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
3. does your country have access to sea?

Ji Ho doesn't feel well. The concert had drained him. And so Jack accompanies him back to the campsite.
While Travis pays Jeb for the gig. Jeb: "Thanks Travis!" Travis: "I have to thank you! You two are amazing. We should do this again soon!" Jeb: "Sure!"
Jeb leaves without Saiwa and Lola, the groupie, follows him!
Saiwa: "Hey! If I can't have Jeb's hugeness, no one will!"
Jeb: "It's not how it looks like! She's just our groupie and takes care of all of our needs ... ok that sounds weird... but I only love you! I thought you left with Jack and Ji Ho! I wanted to run after you. I have no idea why she follows me!"
Saiwa: "I'm sorry Jeb. Leander stirred me up and said you have to leave with Ji Ho and we are still 1k § short to save Adriano and Signore Srini will pick him up tomorrow! And I don't want to lose you again!"
Vlad: "Ji Ho leaves?" Saiwa: "Vlad?"
Vlad: "Did you really think I'd stay at the campsite while Ji Ho performs?"
Omg Lola, the groupie, is Vlad! They better never tell Ji Ho! And it gives this post a completely new meaning! 😅
And this one where they compared Jeb's hugeness to Vlads! 'Lola' wasn't hitting on Jeb, it was sarcasm lol. Poor Vlad.
Jeb: "Don't worry. We will overcome this too." *kiss* Vlad: "Get a room!"
I hope Morgan didn't hear them and just watched the drama ö.Ö'
'E ora sono sulle spese in balia degli usurai sovvenziono quattro streghe per poi sapere dove stai e tuo marito sta qui da me che mangia e dorme come un re Susanna, Susanna, Susanna, Susanna dove sei?'
'And now I'm out of pocket. At the mercy of loan sharks Endowing four witches to find out where you are And your husband is here by me eating and sleeping like a king Susanna, Susanna, Susanna, Susanna Where are you?'
Susanna - Adriano Celentano MV is with scenes from the movie 'Madly in Love' with Adriano Celentano and Ornella Muti and it shows within 5 minutes why I love him so much <3 Ornella Muti is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen and the two even had an affair ö.ö'

Fluctuations
When he opened his eyes, Malden remained as straight as a board. He stared at the bedroom ceiling for a few seconds before turning his head to the window. The shutters were wide open. Yet he remembered that Kieran had closed them the night before. It didn't matter. He stood up slowly and felt the icy cold of the systemic dawn make him shiver. It was around nine o'clock, the sun was rising. Even slower than he was, he thought. Malden knew that it was not easy to be more phlegmatic than he was.
- Except you, Mr. Sun," he murmured, still leaning out the window.
He lost himself in his thoughts for a few minutes. Now that he'd had a good time with his friend, he'd have to think about going home and face his mother's wrath for allowing himself to leave the day before. What an idea to get up so early! He remembered very well that sleep had come late, and fatigue would quickly overcome him during the day. Malden turned and saw Kieran lying on his back, his blanket over part of his body diagonally. He was sleeping with his mouth open and snoring so loudly he could have woken a dragon. The sight made him chuckle.
Discreetly, he collected his things, put on his shoes, and left the apartment without waking anyone. He put on his headphones and played "How Long Can I Go" by "Sam Celentano". Once outside, several options came to mind. There was a park north of Lausya, where he often went to play sports. He also had a painting he had started and wanted to finish. However, the longer he stayed outside, the more problems he would have to deal with when he returned.
- It's up to me. I can go to the park and do push-ups. Take up my painting, knowing that I might run into mom. Maybe I can give Sylva a call and see if I can't come over early. I could have stayed at Kieran's, but now that I'm out, I'm not going to wake him up to come back... And seeing as he's asleep, he won't wake up, that's for sure, he concluded by putting his hand on his face.
Malden suddenly noticed that he had a few unread messages. Naturally, these were from his mother. The most important one was this:
"I don't appreciate your attitude lately. We'll have a discussion as soon as you get home. You know there are rules to follow in this house, and they apply to everyone, even you! »
The first response that came to mind was "You never liked my attitude, and you never understood me. "But he found it too tiring to get into a conflict with her. It was better not to escalate the situation. Akane, his mother, had been an adventurer during her youth. During certain periods, it happened that she went on adventures for a few weeks with her old group of friends. She is a Gial (Earth) atmologist, focused on the Veltôs (Control) path, and her atmology is an ochre red. At a very young age, Akane received a strict and hard education, and also underwent many hazing which forged her character for sure. She has never been an example of softness. This hard and uncompromising character made communication with Malden particularly complicated over the years.
It didn't matter in the end. Malden decided to get on his way and go home. He might as well face Mother Dragon as quickly as possible to put out the flames. Unfortunately, it didn't take much for his mood to be affected. These expressions from his mother reminded him how lonely he felt in his family, despite the good relationship he had with his sister Sawako, and his brother Hayate. He always ended up being seen as too intense, too whiny or touchy and moody. When he thought about it, however, Malden knew that factually he lacked nothing. He was a healthy, rather good-looking young man, good at a few subjects, athletic, with a group of sympathetic and understanding friends, a certain amount of freedom in his personal life, and so on. However, it seemed that something was missing.
It was as if there was a void somewhere. A fear of not living up to his own image, or of failing at what he could do. He was so special that he could be admired for the strangeness of his thoughts and artistic productions, but also stigmatized, and found "weird", or "unapproachable", to use terms he had heard about himself. Yet he longed to be accepted for who he was, without becoming like everyone else.
When he opened the door to the apartment, he expected to find his mother getting ready for work. Instead, he found Sawako sitting in the kitchen. She was having breakfast: a glass of hot delicatessen milk with a little pethmergale sugar. The whole thing made the milk look dark and creamy. She was reading a manga while smoking a cigarette.
- Hi! he said. I didn't think you'd be here at this hour. I thought I'd find Mom instead.
- Nah, she left pretty early this morning to buy some stuff. I don't think she's gonna be back for a while. Where did you go anyway? Kieran's?
- Yeah. We wanted to watch "Alvist Wars" quietly, but Isaac had come into my room yesterday to snoop on something. I yelled at her, she got involved and... well, you know mom.
- Yeah, I know what you mean. Well, she wasn't too happy about it. In fact, she was angry that you broke like that. I understand, but you could have avoided it, or told me about it. I would have tempered the situation a bit, you know how I usually do.
- I know, but Kieran kind of rushed me, I didn't have much time to make my decision. I've done this plenty of times before, but it seems like yesterday was worse than usual. Why is that?
- Didn't Mom tell you what we have to do tonight?
- No?
- Okay, too weird. Well, actually we're supposed to go to Welliyo with Dad, Mom and Helen to see Melva. Maybe there's some news about her memory, but nothing transcendent you know.
Malden hiccupped in surprise and recoiled slightly. He felt stupid, but also excluded for not having been kept in the loop.
- Is she serious? Why didn't she tell me?
- I think she was going to propose to you yesterday.
- Suggesting me the day before for the day after? What if I had something to do? Yes, I would have canceled. I would cancel anything to go see Melva, but still.
- Anyway, chances are that's why she's so upset about your escapade yesterday. You should just apologize and tell her you'll be there tonight, if you want to be safe. I'll cover for you, but do what I say. I mean, I'll figure out how to fix it, I'll improvise.
- And you think you can get Isaac to stop making my life miserable?
- Don't worry, I'll work it out by ruining his. There are a few things he and I need to discuss. He's still asleep, but I'm setting him up for a real wake-up call.
- You're handling it, thanks. I have to go see Sylvania this afternoon. Do you think you can handle that too?
- Consider it done," Sawako replied, winking at him.
Malden knew he could always count on her in many circumstances. At 27 years old, she was the oldest of her siblings, and therefore the one with the authority right after her parents. And fortunately, Sawako had a lot in common with Malden. Both of them were very sensitive and attached to their deepest values, but Sawako tended to be more withdrawn and passive than her brother. She was a specialist in the art of running away and saying nothing, letting go, sleeping and lazing around. Beyond her studies in water atmology, she loved to write poetry, fiction, and play video games with horror, romance, and role-playing themes. At least that's what her mother told her. Malden, on the other hand, was much more active and enjoyed going out, shopping and discovering more about the world around him. With his pocket money, he bought a lot of things like incense, posters and an infinite amount of clothes that he could wear according to his moods. Besides,
since he would have to go back to Sylvania in the afternoon, he started looking for different clothes to change into after his shower. Leaving his hair down, Malden put a diamond-shaped earring in his left ear, as well as a golden pendant with a small sphere. He put on a gray sweater with "N.O.T.H.I.N.G." in bright green letters. Further down, in small print, it read "Nobody On This Healthiest Irrelevant Narrow-minded Globality. ». Malden liked to wear this sweater when he wasn't sure how he felt. He often hoped that those closest to him would be able to decode this information and understand how he was feeling by carefully observing how he dressed. But it never worked. He went to his room to finish getting ready. After putting on his black shorts and sneakers, the same green as his sweater's typography, he heard his mother coming back to the apartment. Sawako immediately struck up a conversation with her. Malden reached out to listen.
- Malden is back to the point.
- Is he in his room?
- Yeah, but I think it's best to leave it alone for a bit today.
- Oh no! Have you seen how he's acting right now? I have to talk to him, this is too much. And he doesn't answer the messages I leave! That's not an attitude!
- I know, I know mom. But he's a teenager, so you have to imagine that he's going to do a few more silly things like that.
- Sawako, do you defend your brother when he takes the wrong path? Do you think you're helping him to act that way?
Akane spoke loudly and raised her voice with every sentence. She was panting, exhausted from bringing all the groceries alone from the store. Despite her intensive training as a fighter, she was much less active since she had built her family life, and was therefore much more quickly tired for actions that, in her youth, were just a walk in the park for her.
- Plus no one helped me with the groceries today! I have to do everything alone in this house, it's not possible! Call your father for me, so he can come and help me clean up instead of sleeping again!
- Mom, I'm not defending Malden, but I think you're overreacting a bit. He just went to Kieran's. He wanted to watch "Alvist Wars" and he came home early. He's doing well in school and he doesn't have bad company. Don't you think you should leave him alone for a while and deal with Suzanne and Hayate, who are always provoking him?
- Yes, yes it's good. Okay, I'll leave it. Let him do. Call your father now. Is Malden coming tonight so we can go visit Melva, yes or no?
- It will be there.
Malden smiled broadly and clenched his fist in victory. What could he do without Sawako? He felt himself growing wings. The weekend would probably be much more enjoyable than he had imagined. Grabbing his cell phone, he decided to send a message to Sylvania.
"Hi Sylva 😊! Do you think we could eat together this lunch? Like, at a snack bar not too far from your place, and then we spend the afternoon together like we said? »
Every time he took the time to send her a message, Malden's hands were shaking and sweaty. Would he choose the right words? Was he being pushy? Or too weird? Did she realize how he felt about her? And even worse: did he really feel something for her? And this something, was it love? It was so complex for him to understand, so difficult to be totally sure, considering the particular situation. Didn't she just remind him of his sister, who is now in the hospital and he misses her so much? Malden didn't know. He always came to the conclusion that it was probably best to let it go and see where it would take him.
His phone vibrated. It was her. She had just answered! He hurried to open the message.
"Hi Malden! That's a really cool proposal. Where do you want to eat? And what do you want to eat? Something usual and not too far away, just to do it quietly? »
"Noon, at the pizza place across the street from you? »
"Perfect! See you later! »
Since everything was already planned, all he had to do was spend the time he had left doing something he liked. So he threw himself into the painting he had started a few days ago. Malden was fond of searching for photographs of various places in the Mysticiën, and recently his attention had been drawn to pictures of the Omaltäb Forests in Almarosa territory to the south. He was busy redrawing the trees with pink, dark blue, green or even black foliage that could be found there. The simple fact of smelling the paint in the room made him feel a certain fullness that nothing else could give him. After taking care to lock the door of his room so as not to be disturbed, he painted for a long time and moved forward on his canvas. If for some reason he couldn't become an alvist or a martial artist, Malden knew he would become a painter and would do everything he could to fulfill that dream. And even if he did become an alvist and a martial artist, he would be a painter too! With his savings, he vowed to buy a high performance camera and take photographs from original angles and then redesign and paint unusual places in the country, giving them a special interpretation with special color schemes. This was how he would communicate to the world the way he perceived and felt the universe. This idea excited him.
Shortly before the appointment time, Malden rushed to the front door to get going. When he opened it, he passed the kitchen, where he saw his parents preparing dinner. While he was already on the landing, he heard his mother's authoritative voice.
- Be back by five o'clock, we'll go see Melva. We won't wait for you forever.
- Uh, yes, Mom. See you tonight!
- That's it," she said dismissively.
The sun was shining on Lausya, accompanied by a rather strong wind. A gust of wind blew straight towards Malden, removing his hood and messing up his hair. He who wanted to be elegant for Sylvania, it was from now on lost pain. He sighed discreetly while putting back his hood. That was not going to dry his good mood found. He was now listening to "Apricot" by "Sam Celentano". Malden could already imagine himself with Sylvania teaching him some scales and making him listen to her melodies. Her calmness, her kindness and her rigor were for him like nectar and ambrosia. He admired her terribly, and these sentimental questions about her were very recent. But he had known her for a few years already.
After a few minutes, Malden reached the main square where Sylvania and her mother lived. There was a fountain in the center, and some stone slabs decorated with flowers tended by the city's gardeners. A few people were there, including groups of children who had come to buy pancakes or ice cream, despite the cold season. Sitting under a white umbrella at one of the many tables of the local pizzeria, Sylvania was waiting patiently, her phone in hand. She had let her long red hair down, was wearing a white dress with blue polka dots and a small silver necklace and a pair of simple earrings of the same complexion. When she saw Malden, she waved at him.
- Hi! How are you? I'm so hungry! I've already reserved a table for the two of us, so what should we order? Asked she, cheerful.
- I'll probably have a salad with a slice of pizza. I'm not very hungry, but it'll do for me!
- Are you sure you'll have enough energy to listen to my news and convince me to join your group if you don't eat enough? She joked.
- Don't worry about it. I want you to join us enough, I don't need a pizza to help me!
After they had actually placed their order, the two young people ate together and talked about the rain and the weather. Malden admired the way Sylvania spoke about her extracurricular activities, but also her involvement in various social struggles. She was already very active on Signold - a well-known social network on Elzetarân - and shared many videos about animal causes and ecology. Sylvania already seemed to be a big shot and followed very closely the actions of the Renovators' Guild. It was a group of atmologists and adventurers of all kinds, formed several decades ago. They were in charge of monitoring the development of the ecosystems and biomes of Elzetari after certain confrontations, whose damage could have seriously damaged various places and destroyed the fauna, as well as the flora.
Time passed without them noticing. Soon enough, they finished their meal and went to Sylvania. Coming from a well-to-do family, they lived in a large residence where the richest inhabitants of Lausanne were to be found. The mayor, Oscar Fanghël, lived nearby with his wife and son. Malden was always impressed when he set foot in Sylvania's house: everything was always so clean! The living room seemed huge and everything he saw seemed to be priceless. The marble walls of a very light and sober
grey were decorated with paintings showing fantastic scenes. One could see atmological warriors fighting carniocs and wild creatures in the skies, unleashing various elemental forces.
- Every time you come over, you can't help but leave your eyes glued to the picture in the living room. You know I'm going to end up asking my mom if I can give it to you, right?
Malden flinched and blushed. He had never realized how much these paintings could absorb him. The idea that he might be seen to be lusting after them embarrassed him.
- Oh no, not at all! It's just... I really wish I had a talent like that. You know, I see how well the color scheme is mastered, it drives me crazy! There is the light, so well reflected, and the contrast between the atmos used by the fighters on the painting, the expression of pain on the creatures, and even the effects of the wind that blows even though we don't see it. It's beautiful. Every time I see it, I feel like it's the first one.
- I think it was Cleora Stolteïska who made this painting. I would have to see it again with my mother. And it seems to me that she is still alive. Maybe one day, if you meet her, you can ask her how she did it?
Malden's eyes seemed to light up. He began to do some research on his cell phone and found more of the painter's work.
- Wow, she's so good... If I met her, I wouldn't even know how to ask her questions. Well, anyway, I'll deal with that when I get home. For now, I have someone else talented to admire on her compositions, right?
- Don't overdo it! I'm just getting by on my mom's classes when it comes to reproducing classics. For my creations, it remains to be seen... I'm not very comfortable with the idea of doing new things, that go out of the box, I'm afraid it won't be very pleasant to the ear, also because...
- Hey, Sylva! he interrupted her. It's not serious, you have to try in life. Let me listen!
- But if you think it's ugly, you probably won't want me in your group.
- Does this mean that you want to join our group so badly that I don't actually need to convince you?
She hiccupped with surprise and put her hands in front of her mouth. Sylvania had tricked herself. She was more interested in the idea of being part of this music group that was forming than anything else, but she didn't want it to be so obvious. She would still be seen as the girl with no friends, who craved acceptance from others.
- It's true," she sighed. Well, enough wasted time. Sit down on the couch. I'll play you this little piece. I was inspired by "rocking horse" by "Etolica. ».
Without adding a word, Malden settled comfortably on the black velvet sofa. Sylvania took her turn on the small purple seat where she sat to play the piano. She had her back to him, slowly positioning her fingers on the keys. The girl took a deep breath before starting to play the first notes of her composition. The start was awkward but soon she gained confidence and began to play with more assurance. The notes flowed together with a certain smoothness.
To Malden, it was as if a beautiful story was being told. He was so impressed by her dexterity that he wanted to get closer to her to better admire her performance. However, for fear of distracting her, he preferred to stay behind and come without making any noise. She was in front of the large window, giving on a great part of the city. He admired the view as he listened to the soft melody played by his friend, while he imagined how these notes would blend with Teano's expertise on the guitar, Kieran's voice and his drumming.
The listening went on for almost three minutes, during which time Malden was totally transported. He found himself re-admiring the painting by Cleora Stolteïska that hung on the living room wall. This creation and Sylvania's composition went so well together that he imagined one day he would be a painter of masterpieces and she a professional pianist, creating melodies around his world-renowned paintings. An exciting future, from which he exited as soon as Sylvania gave the last note of her essay. A few seconds were necessary for her to come back to reality. She took again a big inspiration, then she got up and turned slowly towards her friend. The window was left open, and a cold breeze crossed the room and shook her long dress as well as her hair. An image that stuck in Malden's mind and he swore to himself that he would paint this scene.
- There, now you know my little music. I know it's probably too soft for what you're doing, but it's the best I have in stock right now.
- Sylvania, it's really beautiful. It's probably silly and simple as an opinion, but I don't know what else to add... Then, I don't play the piano, so I imagine that there are things to be revised, it's possible. But anyway, I really liked it. You know Kieran, he likes it when it moves a little bit more, but then Teano will be over the moon, you can believe me!
- Do you think so? She asked hesitantly, as she nervously played with her fingers.
- I don't think so: I know so! Will you show me some other things? Songs you learned with your mother for example, maybe we could rework some of them and see how to create other songs together from that!
- It's a good idea. So, let's see...
All afternoon long, Sylvania and Malden discussed and studied in detail different compositions, some of which they took care to select to present to Malden and Teano. Gradually, more than his ambiguous attraction to Sylvania, it was his passion for art and music that took over. He was very curious and concentrated in these tasks, as she was too.
Since the time for him to be reunited with his family was fast approaching, Malden prepared to leave to avoid being late. But just before he left, Sylvania received a phone call that seemed to puzzle her.
- An unexpected call? he asked.
- Well... It's Annabelle. You know, the girl in Sara's class.
He looked at her with a puzzled look.
- Maybe it's her mother calling? I think she works with yours, right?
- Not anymore. They kept in touch but... Well, wait. "Hello?" She says.
"Yes, Sylvania? It's Annabelle. Sorry, we haven't talked in a while, but I've been trying to reach Sara and even her brother but no one answers! »
"No worries Anna. But do you need anything? »
"This will probably sound weird to you, but my grandfather came back from a long trip a few days ago. And you'll never guess: he brought back with him a Phelidus Tenebris! »
As Sylvania turned on the speaker phone, Malden also heard the news. He struggled to keep his astonishment from being heard. The Pelidus, whatever their nature, were extremely powerful creatures and known to be dangerous.
"A Phelidus? " Sylvania repeated, worried. "It's still very dangerous! Do the authorities know that this creature is here, in Lausya? What do you want us to do for you? »
"She's dying and has little ones... six to be exact. That's a bit long, and I don't have much time. Listen, I wish you could come to my house together as soon as possible, you and Sara and the others. Grandpa will be there, he'll be able to explain. »
"I... well, okay Annabelle. I hope it's nothing serious anyway. I'll see what I can do to keep them updated and get back to you! »
"Thank you Sylva! »
She hung up her phone and looked at Malden, stunned.
- A Pelidus with babies... How often do you hear such stories?
- Even the participants of "War of the Alvists" don't have Pelidus! Malden added. The thing I remember is that his grandfather must be really good. Renyu says you can only find them at Failghost Manor. And do you know what they say about that manor?
- Yeah, that it's haunted or something... We'll talk about it again, I should let you go before your mom gives you a hard time for being late. It's already a miracle my mom wasn't there today and we got to see each other, might as well not ruin the end of the day!
- You're right, I'm leaving. I forgot one thing! I think you're meeting Teano later on, right?
- Yes, and he has to spend the night at Renyu's house right after.
- You can tell him that I did some research the other day, and I found a luthier that might be of interest to him, since he wanted to try his hand at the electric guitar.
With that, Malden and Sylvania parted ways. He walked through the spacious corridors of the building before finding himself outside, taken by the temperature which seemed to have dropped a few degrees compared to the early afternoon. Happy with this exciting afternoon, he then thought about what he would learn when he arrived at the hospital with his family. If Melva remembered him, at least for a few seconds during the visit, nothing could make him happier. But Malden refused to deny it. With his headphones in, he shuffled along, his imagination conjuring up the worst scenarios about his sister's shattered memory. His mood wavered again.
When he arrived home, his parents were getting ready to leave. Sawako was already ready, a long dark blue leather coat on her back and her black hair done up in a neat bun. Aware of her brother's difficulty in dealing with this situation, she simply patted him on the shoulder and gave him a hug.
- Don't worry Maldou, she'll remember us one day. The more we go to see her, the more it will help her.

SECRET RADIO | Sept.5.20
“Crosscountry Rabbithole” curated in the van on a drive between Brooklyn and the countryside of Illinois on Labor Day Weekend 2020 (Hear it here.)
As there’s still very much a pandemic going on, we really didn't want to stop overnight if we didn’t have to on our drive from New York to Illinois, so after we exhausted the fantastic Saturday NPR lineup we figured a great way to stay awake was compiling the second issue of WBFF. You’ll hear a lot of the African and tropical vibe from last week, plus more French yé-yé and Europe in general. Here’s the track list, and of course, detailed notes below:
WBFF, édition 2, 5.SEP.20
1. Michel Polnareff - La lezione del capellone
Le Beatnik is one of Paige’s all-time favorite songs — the guitar is just such a rad riff, and it was a real debate on which version to put on, the French version of the Italian, and we figured we didn’t have much Italian yet… plus check out how he rolls his Rs! That’s one thing about the major hitters of French pop in the ‘60s — they all sing in different languages. (Keep an ear out for France Gall later!)
2. Antoine Dougbé - Honton Soukpo Gnos
Dougbé just hit us like a ton of bricks — these arrangements are completely perfect to our ears. So detailed, and with super funk and super Velvet Underground tones at the same time (check out the freakin guitar solo, and guitar outro), plus of course a Beninese pulse that is just unstoppable. This one was produced, uncredited, by Melomé Clement, and Dougbé isn’t the singer, he’s the composer.
3. The Velvet Underground - Cool It Down
The guitar tones here come so naturally out of the T.P. Orchestre sound. There’s plenty of stuff he’s saying that I don’t understand, and he’s saying it in English.
4. Ranil - Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical - Licenciado
This is another Analog Africa release, with a fantastic album cover. Paige dove into it and soon found that she was checking every day to see if the vinyl was out, cos it was under 300 copies and falling. It’s got a parrot on the cover that looks like the Greenwood parakeets. This song is how she learned that she loves cumbia music.
5. T.P. Orchestre Poly Rythmo - Trop Parler C’est Maladie
The guitar launches into these endless patterns that wind around an unknown number of percussionists. Everyone feels so fluid together. “Trop parler c’est maladie”: “Too much talking is bad,” literally, which Paige imagines as essentially meaning, “Let’s stop talking and make out.” But we don’t really know.
The way the voices layer together when they’re singing, and then the guitar rises into the spaces between them, twisting and winding and droning and melodizing, is just completely mesmerizing. This incredible guitarist is Papillon, and he died in 1982. What a huge loss — he plays so eloquently and so conversationally.
6. Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang - Somebody
I learned about Janka Nabay by hearing that he had just died. Listening to KDHX, the DJ (Caron House?) said she was sorry to hear about his passing and put on this song and I had to stop driving so I could just listen to all of the patterns crossing. I sure would have loved to see this band perform live — I feel like this is a specific reason we want to be in NYC, to meet people with capabilities I hadn’t previously known existed and work together.
7. Anna Karina - Roller Girl
Our friends Phil and Archie are an intercontinental love affair. When Phil tries to express an American accent, it’s always dripping with RRRRRs. This song feels like that, a French singer dramatically unrolling her Rs like she’s messing with her English teacher.
8. Wells Fargo - Watch Out
We believe we first heard about Wells Fargo from a Snap Judgment episode. It’s really great, starting with how they picked the name from the side of a stagecoach in a Western movie as a completely random phrase.
9. Patrick Coutin - J’aime regarder les filles
This song — this pretty freakin radical recording — became a huge hit in France in 1981 and apparently served as the soundtrack of that period. It was his big hit.
That main phrase he keeps repeating translates to “I like to watch girls on the beach,” which gets weirder and sometimes creepier with each pass.
10. Jacques Dutronc - Les cactus
Credit to Pandora for bringing us Jacques Dutronc! He sounds like Bob Dylan on a lot of songs, but he doesn’t seem to be the Dylan of France — that would be more like Serge Gainsbourg. But we could be wrong about that too. He’s also longtime partners with Francoise Hardy, which made them two of the hottest and hippest and most talented musicians of the ’60s.
Clip from Diablo Menthe
This is the clip of the schoolkids that we told you about, singing the Sylvie Vartan song from last week.
11. El Rego - Zon Dede
One of our main appreciations now is how deeply and broadly and internationally James Brown hit the ’60s and ’70s. People seemed to be struck by him and his approach planetwide, and it shows up like a shockwave through the whole era. This is Benin’s El Rego (thanks to Analog Africa once more for pointing him out), and his whole character seems to be in conversation with James Brown, shouting at each other from opposite sides of the world.
12. T.P. Poly-Rythmo, Bentho Gustave - Iya Me Dji Ki Bi Ni
The level of simultaneous groove and drone happening here is just unstoppable. This song has a sound I feel like I’ve always been looking for, not to play but just to dance and freak out to. Bentho Gustave is T.P. Poly-Rythmo’s bassist. We just got his headlining album on vinyl, so amazing!
13. Cambodian Rocks 1 - Yol Aularong - Jeas Cyclo (Ride Cyclo)
It’s amazing to think about how many sudden collisions of American and Cambodian experiences there were in the ’60s — so many disastrous ones, but also whatever combination of factors lead to the existence of this music. It’s so incredibly skilled and smooth, and I want to know more about who made this and how.
14. Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol
Don’t miss the videotape version of the live TV version via YouTube. Celentano is an Italian singer, but this is him tweaking Americans with a songful of non-English English.
15. France Gall - Der Computer Nr. 3
Another example of French pop multilingualism. One of Paige’s favorite voices, just throwing herself into the melodies all casual and easy breezy. We found out about this song because Paige was listening to a bunch of Quebecois radio, and they were talking about her, and they were playing a bunch of clips of her performing, including this one. It turned out that she had just passed on. We had to find it find this track.
16. Saigon Rock and Soul - Thành Mái - Tóc Mai Sợi Vắn Sợi Dài (Long, Uneven Hair)
What a vocal performance! Everything about the tones and melody of this recording — voice, organ, guitar — make it feel like a dream of hardcore hippie rock, minus even one shred of San Francisco. Every time I hear this song hit its crescendo I am completely in its thrall.
17. Ofege - It’s Not Easy
So these guys are from Lagos, Nigeria, and were in high school when they recorded this. Which is just freakin perfect. It sounds like enthusiasm and bad gear and good voices and that singular feeling of being sixteen and having a stone blast.
18. Avolonto Honore et l’Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Sètché Wêda
It took some time for us to find this song. This version is from an album we found online, but it also exists on an Analog Africa album. The hand drums locked in with the guitar lick for the verse get so deep when the other voices come in. And the cascading guitar riff creates a sudden electric waterfall, while the horns point straight over to jazz and western rock and soul.
19. Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical - Marlenita
Paige became completely smitten with this album, which we found after getting caught up in an album promising Peruvian chichidelica.
20. National Wake - Everybody Loves Freedom
When I started looking for African punk, I found this set of videos of National Wake and pretty much all of them are this good. They’re a Black and white band (the first?) from South Africa in apartheid ’70s and the rock and punk that they make overflows with feeling. There’s a documentary called Punk in Africa that clearly needs watching.
21. English Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom
The live version of this song really amps up the energy from the studio version I’m used to. This song always makes me think of my friend Audrey, who made me a mixtape when I was just a wee twig, and this was one of the songs that broke through and made a lasting impression. I think of her every time.
22. Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight
“Translation from the original English hrm hrm hrm”
This song structure is so very cool, where he’s kind of playing around, setting the stage, warming up his story, and then the horns crash in with a shocker part, which gives away to this cartoonish, endlessly repeating horn phrase, like a piece of early Disney footage on repeat. Also like loop-based recordings that were still more than a decade in the future. This is one of my favorite versions of Fela, where he’s exploding with a new self and a new mode of music.
23. Fela Ransome Kuti and His Koola Lobitos - Ololufe
Now some time travel - this is from a collection of earliest Fela Kuti, when he’s in a completely different mode, more in the high life and samba form. He and his band are playing in a crowd-pleasing style, and it’s really very beautiful, with gorgeous vocals and horn passages. But this is also all prelude to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a character we haven’t even glimpsed yet when this song was recorded.
24. William Onyeabor - Atomic Bomb
We really don’t know much about this song except that it seems to always show up at just the right time — or maybe its presence just makes the time right.
25. Assa Cica - Tinma Sa Le
We were down a different rabbithole when we saw this video appear that we couldn’t pass up. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rpI09vbq_Q) It’s a long and winding song that was one of Assa Cica’s most notable hits in Benin.
I love the three slapped notes in the middle of the song that never come back — that’s the way to slap. The bass throughout this song, but especially in the choruses, is exceptional, telling its own separate story but staying in relation with the vocals. And Paige’s favorite part of the melody is the bridge.
We just learned that Assa Cica died on May 22 of this year. It feels so strange to fall hard for a person’s music just as they leave the stage for good. (See also Janka Nabay.) It also feels good to realize you’ve already become part of a musician’s music living and giving beyond their own lives.
——
…And now we are safely arrived in the woods of Illinois. Time for a whole bunch of screenprinting and music listening!
