my thoughts: this is a one-shot book (no cohesive storyline unless chosen) but its so good. so good. i thought shigaraki, dabi and all might in one book was interesting but never the less, super good! i never was interested in the mute concept but its written good? (but thinking about it all the other mute!reader fics are good but they wont nsfw so it didnt interest me-) furthermore, its so good. so pure. so hot. 11/10 would recommend.

Well I spent far too long on this, but it was fun. 

A - Ships that you currently like a lot I mostly read Stucky. They got me into this mess and I’ll love them forever :) I like Geraskier a lot, which is definitely @witcherling‘s fault. I love Carol/Maria, although I haven’t read a ton (hint hint we need moooooore). I love good, interesting friendships with Steve & Nat and Bucky & Nat. I love stories that explore Steve’s relationship with Wanda post CACW. I love reading Sam when he’s developed beyond a caretaker or helpful friend with no actual personality of his own and Tony when he’s developed beyond an asshole literally only present to antagonize Steve. 

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind. I loved Geralt and Jaskier’s dynamic in the show and that mountain scene made me cry, but I don’t think I’d have sought out fanfiction or really shipped them without @witcherling​ ‘s intervention. When I love a writer, I’ll read damn near anything they write, and now I’m fully immersed and reblogging witcher shit and I’m not really sure what happened but here we are.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. I haven’t watched The Magicians, but tumblr posts make me want to ship Queliot a little. Not sure if I should watch the show or just look at two lovely boys kissing and/or pining when they show up on my dash. Honestly most MCU pairings didn’t cross my mind until I saw them here. Stucky jumped out of the movies and slapped me in the face with WE ARE CLEARLY IN LOVE so lots of other ships are just...odd...to me. But ship and let ship, y’all. If it makes you happy, write it!

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc? Bucky? His actual arc gets pretty fucked by the MCU, but I do really love the idea that love transcends violence and pain and time and ultimately helps him find his way back to himself. I love fic that explores that, but lets him do the heavy lifting of his own recovery (vs. Steve fixing him with his super soldier dick). 

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend. SHURI PLEASE BE MY FRIEND! I will awkwardly stand in the corner of your lab and be amazed and try not to ask obnoxious questions every two seconds. She is the coolest and I want to hang out with her. She could be jaded or spoiled or pampered but instead she OWNS that she is always the smartest in the room and uses that to help people and help her country. She doesn’t take shit and she owns her intelligence and I love her. 

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice). Realistic depictions of mental health issues and recovery and therapy, bi and pan representation that goes beyond off-handedly mentioning a random person is attractive, non-binary and trans representation period (but especially stories where gender identity isn’t THE THING, but merely one part of who the character is). 

Shout out to @chicklette for their gorgeous fic Songbird which is almost complete and features a lovely bi Bucky who deals with bi erasure and wrangles with how people perceive his sexuality, him, and his partners. I LOVE THIS FIC! https://archiveofourown.org/works/23990152

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of? I’m recently obsessed with Hozier which is also @witcherling’s fault (really throwing you under the proverbial bus today, I suppose) and NFWMB definitely gives me stucky vibes. 

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas). uhhhh... something with Steve having a big brother-ish relationship with Wanda and maybe him and Bucky bond over that… Bucky feels similarly protective of his sister and they meet because maybe Wanda and Rebecca are friends and these two giant beefcakes bond over their extreme softness and incredible love for these two young women? I love fics with Geralt and Ciri and Jaskier… maybe Jaskier teaches guitar lessons (lute lessons? I don’t know there’s a reason I don’t really write) and he has a major crush on his fave student’s super hot dad but doesn’t want to make it weird? I’m tired I did my best *shrug*

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? I have lots of headcanons but none are really so rigid that I can’t consider other viewpoints or read fic where things are different. I think Bucky knew he loved Steve before Steve understood what his love for Bucky meant. After watching CATFA far too many times, I’m not sure that Steve knew what all his BIG BUCKY FEELINGS meant until he lost him. But I still love love love reading pre-war stucky where they’re all sweet and and in love and having glorious sex in their shared apartment. 

V - Which character do you relate to most?

hmmm this one is tough. Bucky is my favorite character in the history of everything, but it’s not like I have lots in common with him. Bucky is wildly competent; the things he is/wants/need to be good at, he steadfastly devotes himself to and his loyalty and love for the few things he really, truly cares about is unshakable. I’m passionate but that passion gets strewn about across too many things; I really admire Bucky’s quiet devotion to what he loves and his ability to become fucking great at what he needs to be good at. Steve being ready to fight the entire world to protect Bucky is hella relatable.

1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan-fiction?

I think I was around 12 or 13, definitely middle school age

2) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.

I can't say for certain that I have a preference.  I never wrote reader insert until Tumblr and I realized that's mostly what people want to read here.  Before that, it was all OCs

3) What is your favorite genre to write for?

Dude, I am a sucker for romance!

4) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?

I actually did this with one fic and it was an SPN fic set in St. Louis around Six Flags... it was called Spellbound, after an AC/DC song lol  It was just AWFUL and I got as far as Sam being afraid of clowns and Dean wanting to eat ALL the funnel cakes before I realized that's all I really had of the fic

5) When is your preferred time to write?

Usually at night, but that rarely happens anymore

6) Where do you take your inspiration from?

Often times it's random thoughts that occur to me, occasionally a song or something. I get a lot of inspiration from trying to murder my friends with soul-crushing ideas haha

7) In your All That’s Best of Dark and Bright fic, what’s your favorite scene that you wrote?

That's a tough one because I vacillate between hating everything and kinda enjoying a lot of it.  I suppose any of the smut scenes are good, and I enjoy the "Winter Soldier" scene in the dance hall from Bucky's perspective.  It was interesting to write.

8) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?

Not that I can think of.  Thankfully I haven't gotten a lot of criticism in my fics, save for spelling and grammar issues.  I may have edited for something like that before.

9) Who is your favorite character to write for? Why?

I love writing for lots of characters! Just my mood sometimes determines who I feel is the best "fit" for writing.  Bucky is obviously a prominent one because there's been lots of feedback for that muse.

10) Who is your least favorite character to write for? Why?

That's... hard to say?  Maybe Natasha Romanoff and I think it's because the movies don't give a lot of good, consistent characterization and I've never gotten into her comic stuffs?

11) How did you come up with the title for the All That’s Best of Dark and Bright?

- It took me months and already 10 chapters written before I came up with the name.. and honestly it's from a poem I've always enjoyed.

12) How did you come up with the idea for All That’s Best of Dark and Bright?

I think it was mostly wanting to see Bucky recovering in a believable way. There's a lot of Bucky recovery fics out there... A LOT, but while many are lovely work, a lot just seem so quick.  Like, suddenly he's fallen for someone and he's all better.  Nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to write something that felt more natural to me.

13) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

I have several, actually.  An SPN fic that I have posted on AO3 and very nearly finished.  A Star Trek: Into Darkness fic and a Vampire Diaries fic.  The first I just lost the muse for and it's been several seasons since I started it, so I felt it was just done.  The other two I lost when an older laptop crashed.  I think there's even an Outsiders fic in the depths of this blog that I never finished haha

14) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?

I sometimes think about doing a sequel to Pretty, Shiny Things, but the original was so self-contained and I worry I would ruin it by adding more.

15) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?

There are so few stories that I've actually finished that it's difficult to say haha

16) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

I admire a TON of writers on this site, just the act of putting your work out there is an admirable thing in my book.  Some that especially stick out to me are @interestedbystanderwrites @redgillan @plumfondler @after-avenging-hours @captainpoopweinersoldier @angryschnauzer @abovethesmokestacks @the-squid-one ... I think maybe the whole goodbye chapter.  There was a lot of emotion in that chapter and it took a long time

I do generally make an outline of scenes I'd like to happen and try to put them in the right order... I agonize over them throughout the process, but sometimes while I'm writing, other things happen and I have to adjust accordingly.  Writing's hard, man.

22) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fan-fiction?

That few people would read it and I'd be nervous about every single one of them haha

23) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?

Maybe my Stucky fic?  Or my Clint Valentine's Day fic, featuring Deadpool haha Maybe my Chris Beck fic... that was some smutty goodness

24) In contrast to 23 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?

Hmmm, I don't know that I roll my eyes at any praise I receive in that extent lol

25) Are any of your characters based on real people?

If I'm being honest, any reader insert or OC is gonna have a lot of me and/or my closest friends in it

26) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?

Probably every time @creideamhgradochas takes the time to write such a long comment on a fic/chapter haha  So many of the compliments I get are amazing, though one that always sticks out is a commenter for the dancing chapter of ATBoDaB saying that Bucky's words in Russian and the way he got so protective reminded her of her boyfriend, who always called her "my sunshine"

27) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?

I mean, there's been a person or two who've told me I just shouldn't bother writing because it wasn't any good, so... that was pretty harsh, but not really criticism

28) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?

I tend to share ideas with friends to see if they sound believable or not OR to help hype me up to actually writing it

Some people do, like my husband and one of my friends.

Actually, I can.  It was a Darth Maul fic that my best friend found and printed out for me to read.  In it, he's in his early 20s and he and Darth Sidious capture a lion-headed Jedi and his female apprentice (I think she was blind?) that Darth Maul started to catch feelings for, but he ended up killing her.

34) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

It's so difficult to choose between fluff and smut!  Smut can allow for some fluffy bits or angsty bits, but there's only so many way you can write genitals moving together haha

i explain this so often man its a trip. ‘jam’ came from simlish in the sims 3 because of that one voice line that’s like ‘jambabedo?’. i had changed my name to that on skype but when i was VCing with @namerine she could only see ‘jam’ and it kinda just stuck. speaking of: the ‘dingus’ part also came from her so literally this name is all because of her and i love her *fingerguns*

by FAR my most popular fic is my collection of sickfics: In Sickness and Health

the only thing that it got beat in was comments from Close to the Heart, but that’s mostly just because it had so many mfin chapters

there are like three fics like that and ofc im gonna list them all

hands down the fic i’ve reread the MOST in the shortest period of time is Sunset in Reverse by @demenior (who i cannot tag for some reason but i hope they know that i love their fic dearly)

there’s this i n c r e d i b l e sickfic by @bosstoaster that i just adore called Drown Out Your Mind that just breaks my heart all types of ways

and there’s this OTHER fic that also fucks me up called strength of the small by @nowweareunstoppable in which pidge is bad ass and also gets fucked up and i literally rec it to all my friends i love it so much

well i just looked up my ao3 and it says i have the most in ‘Alternate Universe - Video Game World’ asjdhsaldhsja aka my mmo au. but technically i think the au i write the most is Modern bc i’m but a simple farmer with a limited mindscape

probably something with a more serious tone (compared to the fluffy wuffy fics i write) like, for example, fatphobia, suicide, and literally just conflict in general. i always feel like im trivializing all of it no matter how hard i try so i just... Give Up because i dont want the backlash ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

i really want to get better at writing conflicts, as stated above lajhdlsadhls. but also i want to be better at planning out stories because i usually give up near the 3/4ths point of literally every multi-chaptered thing i’ve written

definitely rarepairs. voltron is like the biggest fandom i’ve ever been in and my biggest ships are all hunk ships, and all of those are rarepairs OTL

i try to write them down but if i write down the thingy i really want to focus on in the fic then i won’t want to write it anymore because it’s out of my head. OTL its a complicated process.

literally never in my life.

definitely tumblr. i was in the dragon age fandom and there was this fic called The Little Kadan which had fem!inquisitor/iron bull + a baby so like i was all over that asap. i’m too shy to tag the author but u can find them on tumblr at sickly-writes ,,,,,,

17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3?

nah not at all. i’m pretty Niche

(i.e. if you love shunk and/or heith + cuddling, i’m your gal. but anything else is pretty rare OTL)

not in the SLIGHTEST. i call them all babes in my head bc i love them tho

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

i don’t know this @fenri personally but i love their writing so much. i admire their style a WHOLE TON and i think i may have sort of modeled my own after theirs? 

like i’m just thinking about it now but it’s definitely after i reread their fic (*ahem ahem* Like Crystal Guts) for about the fifth time that i started my whole ‘prose-y’ writing, which is very very recent aldjhsal

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

be confident in ur writing! if someone says they don’t like it, your work just isnt for them. just because one single person doesn’t like it doesn’t mean its bad!

r e r e a d what you wrote! i use fromtexttospeech.com to catch like... sentence structure/grammatical errors when my eyes are too tired and i find it helps a lot!

if you find a story you like, try figuring out w h y you like it so much. characterization? the way they describe things? because they use sentence structure you haven’t seen before? and then use that new knowledge to try to make your own writing style your favorite *fingerguns* 

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

i only started plotting fics since last november, which was when i participated in my first nanowrimo. i don’t plot for every single story, but if i’m lost or i want to expand a little, i slap down a bunch of ideas in an empty google doc and go from there! 

generally by then i’ve already written atleast a little bit, though.

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

i can’t even remember what it says exactly now since i deleted the fic after, but someone said my characterization was bad in a super old inuyasha fic. little like... 12 year old me was so sad ;w; 

i don’t think i’ve ever gotten a bad comment after that, though? which is NICE

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

DEFINITELY any action scene. i can’t make them long or drawn out or else i’ll just be struggling and sweating and generally craving death. i think i just need practice but o o o o f

24. What story(s) are you working on now?

i have a few hot n spicy prompts i need to finish that i probably won’t get to until next year salhdjsa

plus a few christmas presents! 

and also my pirate au, Wander, which only has maybe 2 chapters left before its complete!

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?

not in the slightest. generally, if i’m in a writing sprint or something, i’ll try to get over a 1000 for whatever it is, but that’s for the total and not for the session. 

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?

definitely! even though i’m still shy, im a lot more open to constructive criticism (if it doesn’t come after my soul ;w;). I’m also getting better at being more descriptive, which is something i’ve always wanted! 

28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written?

i have two. don’t make me choose

the first is technically cheating because it’s part of a series, and the series is my favorite BUT I DIGRESS. The Witch and the Mage (which is... one of my less imaginative names) is an MMO AU in which shiro and hunk are in love and also i have a vague plot outlined somewhere in my drive that’s pretty wild if i do say so myself. i may never write it but its there and its my favorite and i love the imagery i used in it.

the SECOND is a heith cuddle fic, because that’s basically my brand as a writer. it’s called home and i wrote it when i was very tired and couldn’t get to sleep. i may have been craving human contact? who knows in this economy. even though i see a number of things i wish i could fix about it, it’s just very self-indulgent in more than one way and its very dear to my heart. 

29. What is your least favorite story that you’ve written?

most of the fics i wrote earlier on are pretty bad imo, but i think the ones i hate the most are part of my You Are Beautiful series. it’s grossly out of character (mostly in keith’s case) but it was the first thing i’d written in about four years and i was so proud of it. so it has to stay up for posterity, tbh.

30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?

i really hope to still be writing by then. maybe with my own personal book in its planning stages atleast???  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) gotta be optimistic!!

31. What is the easiest thing about writing?

dialogue? also describing rooms. i love just... randomly popping out something that describes the placement of a couch in relation to a door. 

32. What is the hardest thing about writing?

i always always always get distracted when i’m trying to write. if i’m in the zone, someone in my family is definitely gonna try to get my attention. it’s sort of become habit for me to just interrupt myself first so that i won’t lose whatever train of thought i had LMAO

33. Why do you write?

i like the way my words sound when i string them together in the right (write... *badum ts*) way. it makes me Feel Good (tm). 

also i love giving characters (that mean something to me) attention, because it’s like i’m giving MYSELF attention. a two-for-one!

(I love me some good goddamn unresolved sexual tension and beautifully written smut! I would read anything they threw at me, I’m not going to lie- everything is just so well crafted and feels so realistic. I especially love in Only Losers the whole psychology paper and getting those little glimpses into the other characters and their sexual personalities- so so clever!!!!)

Almaty’s Fire- They were like the lost boys, and of course Otabek was Peter. Yuri was fine with being Wendy if it meant he got to keep the thimble at the end of everything, when the sirens would be drowned out by the sounds of drums and the blue and red lights would flash something gorgeous against his skin.

Or; The lead singer is supposed to have a ton of groupies. Otabek only has the one.

Start of Everything-  He didn't realize someone could fall in love with their best friend, but watching Yuri light a sparkler and chase the other Yuuri around his own garden made something click. The way he threw his head back in laughter, his hair and his face equally lit in the golden twilight. It was just a little ache in his heart, something he hadn't felt before. It confused him, made him furrow his brows together.

Or; Otabek has tried really hard to be good enough for everyone in his life, but Yuri is easy to please.

(I’m so happy I stumbled back upon these works- I remember reading the first chapters of both way back before I even had an ao3 account (which isn’t even that long ago lol) and being absolutely blown away with how well they are written. Especially in Start of Everything- the way Beka’s feelings and anxieties are presented- gosh it felt so so real)

(I love this so so much! I’m not sure what you’d classify this au under, neighbours? Friends to lovers? But again it focuses on Beka’s struggles with being an ignored only child, and how he deals with it. It’s definitely bittersweet and although it hasn’t been updated in a while, I highly recommend the read!)

Not a random one-  He found that those fluffy and sweet fan fictions were starting not to be enough anymore. His feelings for Otabek weren’t of the innocent type, and while he was already used to fantasize about them, he’d gotten so used to actually reading that one day he just slipped. He found a pretty vanilla one, and promised himself that it would be enough. It was a one time thing, it had to be. It wasn’t.

Author Spotlight: AnnieMar

Hello again! This week our nomination comes from previous spotlightee (it’s a word, go with it) @leftylain​. She nominated @anniemar​ who’s well known for cooking up a batch of hot stuff for us to devour.

Here’s what she had to say:

01. What about Wintershock as a pairing appeals to you?  

The muse is strong with them. Many of us identify with Darcy for a whole host of reasons. I certainly do. For me, it’s because she’s snarky. She’s got a quick wit. She makes fun of people to their faces in both covert and overt ways. She’s sarcastic as hell, and I identify with that. If sarcasm flies over your head, you probably won’t like me very much in real life. Either that, or I will just confuse the hell out of you. I just can’t help it. I didn’t start writing Darcy until I’d seen Thor: The Dark World and that was the movie where I really fell in love with her, because they gave her a bit more story to work with. I’d always loved Kat Dennings, since she was in 40 Year Old Virgin and that scene where she’s screaming at her mom about wanting to have sex with her boyfriend. Not many young actresses could have pulled that off. She’s very memorable and interesting. Doesn’t look like every other actress out there, and she’s hilarious. She made Darcy totally outshine Jane, for me anyway, and that fascinated me. Here was this brilliant and gorgeous main character, Jane Foster, and all I wanted was to know more about her best friend.

And then you have Bucky. You could say that I definitely have a type. The misunderstood bad boy. Some of my dudes are more misunderstood and more bad than others, but there’s just something compelling about them, especially (and perhaps only) when they are played by brilliant actors. There’s Bucky of course, there’s Loki, Daryl from the Walking Dead, Eric from True Blood, Rollo and Ivar from Vikings, etc … and for me it goes back all the way to Han Solo. The Rogue. The guy who shoots first but underneath it all, he just needs a hug.

I don’t know what that says about me. Probably nothing good ;-)

And so you have these two characters, Darcy and Bucky, who’s differences can be explored in a meaningful way and how those differences can make them grow. There’s the potential for so much. For serious feels, for growth and discovery, for humor, for AMAZING sex. You know, the whole enchilada.

02. How did you first encounter the pairing?

It was a few years ago and I was an exclusive Tasertricks girl, but I felt like I had read every single Loki/Darcy fic out there, and some of them several times, so I was thinking that I needed some new blood. I asked my Tumblr fam if they had any good Wintershock or Shieldshock recs, and so then I spent the next few weeks mesmerized with all these new stories. I realized that I’d put myself into this hole, limited myself, by only reading Loki. It opened up so many more possibilities. I still didn’t write my own Wintershock for quite awhile, mainly because I felt guilty for cheating on my OG Marvel ship, but I got over it pretty quickly once I actually started writing Bucky Barnes. And now I feel like if you want to write more than one ship, that’s totally cool, it just opens up new and interesting challenges and makes you a better writer.

03. Do you have any specific Wintershock headcanons?

For me, Darcy gives Bucky the room he needs to deal, but on the other hand, she doesn’t let him mope around. She’s not afraid of him. She calls him out. She makes fun of him, doesn’t pity him, treats him normally, like she would anyone else, and he loves her for that. He never thought a girl like her would be in the cards for him at this point.

And then Bucky is one of the only people that can match Darcy’s wit, and so they battle. They love to battle. They also both love and enjoy the little things. I feel like Darcy is someone that’s usually up for anything, I mean, she followed Jane around in the desert and then hung out with her in London, she’s cool. She’s smart and resourceful. She can hang anywhere. Adapt anywhere. She’s definitely a cynic but she also loves experiencing the world. She has passion. And then Bucky has learned to find passion in the tiny details of life. I keep thinking about his room in Bucharest and how he loved his plums at the market. He was so excited about those damn things. And he doesn’t have much, but he’s got it all perfectly placed around him in a little haven, and you can tell he cherishes it all. And so because of those traits, they really enjoy spending time together and discovering the world through each other’s eyes. They balance each other. Bucky has a way of breaking through Darcy’s cynicism and then she has a way of inspiring Bucky to be present. They have the ability to open the world up for each other.

I also feel like Bucky’s old-fashioned sensibilities secretly make Darcy melt. He opens doors, insists on paying the bill, etc., and on the outside Darcy is all “It’s 2017, man, women’s lib happened and you must have been asleep”, but on the inside it makes her feel cherished. She probably wouldn’t admit to that though. And when he does stuff like wins her the biggest stuffed animal she’s ever seen at a carnival they happen upon, she can’t stop smiling, even though it’s a totally cheesy scenario. Bucky just does that to her. Makes her reevaluate romance, as she was pretty sure it was actually a myth before meeting him.

04. Do you associate any particular songs with Wintershock? If so, which one? 

Oh man, I have whole Spotify playlists dedicated to Wintershock. Let’s see … it’s hard to choose. More melancholy ones are “Lucky” by Radiohead and “Coney Island Baby” by Lou Reed. A more upbeat song, and one that’s inspired by Sebastian Stan’s love of 80’s music is “The Promise” by When in Rome … and then I can’t not mention “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)” by Stevie Wonder, it’s the one I’ve been listening to while trying to finish my next Classic Combo chapter. For reasons.

There’s also music from soundtracks I listen to while writing, because sometimes people singing can distract me, but music definitely helps me focus. The soundtrack to Inception, Oblivion (M83) and then the tv show The Leftovers have this sort of beautiful continuous theme that’s very meditative and sort of repetitive and helps me focus. I will put a few songs in a loop, zone out, and then somehow I have several thousand words in a doc.

This is a really long answer to a simple question, sorry. Get me talking about music and I won’t stop.

05. What Wintershock fic by someone else would you recommend to others to read? What about this fic appeals to you?

When I first started reading Wintershock there wasn’t a huge amount of it, so I read ALL OF IT. You know how it is, in the beginning of a ship, or when people are starting to fall down the rabbit hole of love for a certain character. Like … even the fic that some might normally skip over because they involve things you’re not that into, could be a/b/o, AU, or soul-fic or high school fic or some specific kink (these are just examples), but I didn’t care. I devoured it all. And the one that really stood out for me was The Importance of Pop Culture Awareness by Bionically Ironic. She is amazing and very witty in her writing and I love her. The fic was just so different from anything else at the time. For me, it was innovative. I was laughing out loud, which is rare for me. Darcy was hilarious. Bucky was funny. He laughed. He smiled. He was already a part of the Avengers fam. He’d been deprogrammed and was in recovery, and while I seriously enjoyed reading author’s interpretations of his journey through HYDRA’s mind control and coming back to “Bucky Barnes”, it was amazing to read about him being happy again. It warmed my cold black heart, and was definitely an inspiration for how I interpreted Bucky’s character in my own fic. Her work gets the highest of recommendations from me.

06. What kind of Wintershock story would you love to read that hasn’t been written yet by you or others?  

I’d like to read some future “fix-it” fic inspired by the comics. I’d like to read about “Bucky Cap” and Darcy together, perhaps trying to figure out a way to save Steve (who could be “dead” or in a coma, or lost his serum somehow, or trapped in an alternate dimension, etc.), because in my mind, Steve Rogers will always be Captain America. And so then on their journey to discovery THEY FALL IN LURVE. There’s just so many interesting possibilities to explore. What does Bucky’s new Cap suit look like? His new arm? Does Darcy have input on the design? Is there sex happening with the new suit on? Does she cry for a million years because he cut his hair? Is Sam Wilson around? Can we have a Bucky/Sam snarkfest and Darcy just loves to watch them together while eating popcorn because they’re so damn entertaining?

Hmmm. Giving me ideas. NOT GOOD. I have too many WIPs to finish.

07. Out of the Wintershock stories you’ve written, which is your favourite, and why?  

All of my fics feel like my children in some way and it’s hard to pick a fave kid. I also don’t have a ton of Wintershock fics, or really a ton of fic, period, compared to a lot of authors. I can be a pretty slow writer at times, or write things over a million times, or just get stuck on something and let it sit for weeks at a time while my brain mellows out.

Classic Combination is dear to me because it was my first exploration of Bucky. I already had lots of time with Darcy with Tasertricks, but getting inside Bucky’s head was a lot of fun and also frustrating at times just because of how complex he really is. There’s a point when you write a character and they just somehow come to life for you, and he did that pretty quickly for me while writing Classic Combo. And I love writing Darcy as a Sydney Bristow-type. I have the whole thing mapped out and I’m pretty excited about where it’s going and how it will end. And the sex. All that’s mapped out too. I practically have diagrams for it ;-) I still can’t believe I haven’t had them totally do it yet. I really need to rectify that. And soon.

And then there’s Easy Chair, which was meant to be a one-shot, but turned into a longer thing, as shit tends to do with me. It was just fun. Totally fun. No pressure. And in that respect it’s my favorite.

08. Quote a favourite extract from one of your stories. What is it that you like about it?

From Classic Combination:

"We should be best friends, James Buchanan ... because that's what we are. In the story of Captain America, greatest hero of our times, and Jane Foster, famous Nobel Prize-winning scientist, and a god's one true love … that's what we are. We're the classic best friends. We're the sidekicks. We should be the main characters in our own story."

That pretty much sums Wintershock up for me. Two sidekicks who deserve better, deserve so much more tender loving care, getting their very own story. And we, the Wintershock fam, tell that story over and over again in so many amazing ways. And I feel so lucky and blessed to be a part of it.

Ashley Parker Angel Recalls Making a Band in Real-Time

Diehard pop fans want nothing more than to feel close to their favorite artists. Twenty years ago this month, ABC and MTV fulfilled that dream with the creation of Making the Band. The reality show is probably best known for its second iteration when Diddy modernized the program with R&B groups like Danity Kane, but in 2000, it was all about boy bands. Lou Pearlman, a manager and con man fresh off successfully creating Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and LFO, decided the next step in the lucrative teen pop business was to give fans what they always wanted: day one access, so that they, too, could feel like they participated in the creation of their beloved groups. And it began with O-Town.

After hand-selecting members in a countrywide search, Pearlman assembled O-Town with Ashley Parker Angel, Erik-Michael Estrada, Trevor Penick, Jacob Underwood, and Dan Miller, who replaced Ikaika Kahoano. The success of the show’s debut season inspired the network to continue the series, documenting the entirety of the band’s existence, including their discovery of Pearlman’s financial crimes and rumors of his alleged sexual abuse. O-Town broke up after only three years (a short run, even for the most flash-in-the-pan boy bands) but left the world with two memorable singles—“Liquid Dreams,” and the ballad “All or Nothing”—and a shockingly prophetic show that would influence future reality TV programming.

To mark the 20th anniversary of Making the Band’s premiere, I called up O-Town’s frontman Ashley Parker Angel to talk about the show. Our conversation below is condensed and edited for clarity.

JEZEBEL: On Making the Band, O-Town became television stars before you were music stars, and becoming a music star was the entire point. That feels like a really modern way to pursue a pop career. I guess in 2020, it’s social media instead of TV.

ASHLEY PARKER ANGEL: Me and my acting manager, when the audition came through, we thought [Making the Band] was a scripted TV show. We thought it was going to be scripted the same way the Monkees was a scripted show about a band, and then the Monkees obviously used that TV show to launch a legitimate recording career. Having talked to Lou Pearlman once I actually made the band, I’d come to find out that the Monkees were his inspiration. He wanted to make the next iteration of that, and who better to do that than the guy who just created the two biggest superstar boy bands of the day? *NSYNC and Backstreet were just dominating.

At the time, we didn’t have tons of reality TV. The ones that did exist were like Real World or Road Rules. It wasn’t the most popular format. O-Town was essentially two worlds crossing: the world of reality TV shows and the world of boy bands. Those two worlds emerged into Making the Band as an experiment. Nobody knew if it would work. They would even refer to us as lab rats throughout the whole process. The first season was a full 22 episodes, and by the time 20 episodes had aired and it was a hit TV show, we still did not have a record deal.

Because of the success of the TV show, we were able to get the interest of Clive Davis. Cameras flew with us to New York. We signed the deal the week before the finale was going to air. They very quickly edited in the footage of us signing. If you look at what’s happened now with American Idol and The Voice, I think Making the Band really proved that that format could not only be a successful television series, but it can actually launch a legitimate recording group that could have legitimate hit songs on the radio.

And then other people caught wind. Simon Cowell ended up being in one of the early meetings we had with Clive Davis. Very quickly after that, he goes and does Pop Idol. We’d always heard on the record label side that Simon Cowell had been really inspired by what happened with Making the Band and O-Town—so he started Pop Idol, that becomes a huge success, and then, of course, Pop Idolbecomes American Idol.

Pop music has a storied history with reality TV—like everything you were saying about American Idol and The Voice, but also One Direction 10 years later. They were made on The X-Factor UK, and they lost. The experiment with boy bands and reality TV has continued.

Right. And it doesn’t always work. Just because you have a TV show doesn’t mean it’s going to translate to actual radio play. ABC tried to launch a show based on Making the Band called Boy Band. Nick Carter was a judge on it. Timbaland was a judge on it. There was a big primetime push. And then nothing. Those guys are not around. I don’t think they were able to mount a successful single.

I actually really liked that show, but I also love boy bands.

I did, too. As I watched it, I was like, “Oh, they’re doing Making the Band but with a new spin, those superstar judges, which is going to add that American Idolelement.” But it just didn’t pop.

I was listening to a podcast recently with Paris Hilton and she was talking about The Simple Life, which debuted in 2003. She argued that unlike reality television today, reality TV of the early 2000s wasn’t as manufactured or fabricated. Do you agree with that?

I tend to agree with her comment. Yes, there are things being manipulated behind the curtain when you’re in that world. Yes, good reality TV producers see where the conflict is happening, and they massage your life from behind the scenes to make sure those conflicts occur, but those conflicts are real. They’re capturing real life. Obviously, you can do a lot in editing, but primarily [Making the Band] was a very real situation we were all going through.

We had cameras living with us in the house we were living in as O-Town. We had hidden microphones in the house. In Making the Band, if you had a conversation in the middle of the night, these huge production lights would pop on and some guy, another guy with a boom microphone, and a cameraman would rush in. It didn’t matter what time it was. They would film everything. You couldn’t leave the house without telling them because they wanted a camera crew on you. As it went on, however, even by the third season of Making the Band, there was a lot more soft scripting going on. A lot more of producers saying, “Hey, we need you to have a conversation on camera about this.” They’re really kind of directing it more.

How did O-Town try to differentiate itself from the other boy bands at the time?

Making the Band came about at a time where you had a pretty dense field of pop bands. You had LFO, BBMAK—outside of Backstreet and *NSYNC, you had so many offshoots of bands in that style—of course, 98 Degrees. Without the show, there was a lot of noise in an already crowded room. I think the TV show set us apart because now it’s a window into this life that you would never get from just listening to an album. You’re now living in this world. You get the chance to be a fly on the wall and watch that process in a TV show. It set us apart in a way that would’ve been very difficult had we not had the show. I’m not saying we weren’t talented guys, but we had the benefit of being a part of something manufactured, which allowed there to be a higher degree of talent pulled from all these different cities.

I agree. But also, I think of the pop songs of the era—“Liquid Dreams,” come on, you were the boy band unafraid to get sexual. That separates you.

[Laughs] Thank you! I will add to that, too, we were set to do a fourth season of Making the Band. The TV show was always a hit, even though music changed and started to go more R&B and alternative rock again. The second album didn’t sell what the first album did, but the show was still getting really awesome ratings. So we moved into production for Season 4. At that point, a lot of guys in the band were not as excited to keep living on camera. We had a lot of internal debates about whether or not we should be a TV band or if we should move away from that and try to convince people of the longevity of our career. I, personally, always felt the two were connected. Then things started to change. When we got dropped by our record label, MTV also dropped the show. In the end, [the band] did mutually decide to call it quits for a while and all go our own ways with the idea that maybe we would come back in the future.

For the first two albums, we had this unbelievable hitmaker, Clive Davis, and we had ABC and MTV supporting our careers. Once we kind of lost those things, I could see the writing on the wall.

Not only does that sound like a clean break, but you also have a documentary of the entirety of O-Town in Making the Band. That’s unique to your group—even considering later seasons of Diddy’s revamped Making the Band. I think the only thing that’s comparable might be K-pop boy bands whose social media streaming is archived.

You’re so right; it’s so rare. It’s this little window into your life for three or four years. Who has that? And what a crazy time to have captured: a life-changing moment, and here it is in these well-produced, well-edited snapshots of your life.

At the time, were you cautious about working with Lou Pearlman? The show premiered a year or two after both Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC cut ties with him, so litigation must’ve been going on while you were filming.

There was a really specific 20/20 special that aired that was all about *NSYNC and Backstreet’s legal troubles with Lou. Up until that point, Lou was the most charming businessman you’d ever meet. He was obviously making the careers of young pop stars. He was a fun character to be around. Once it started hitting the mainstream media, and you’re hearing all these legal terms and trouble, that definitely started to throw some salt on the situation. And Lou started getting really pushy about us signing contracts. I’ll never forget the first lawyer we hired to look at our initial contract with Lou and said, verbatim, “In my 30 years of entertainment law, this is the worst contract I’ve ever seen.” That added fuel to the fires of what was already happening with Backstreet and *NSYNC.

Some of that actually ends up spilling out onto Making the Band; some of the storyline gets shared. Things start getting sort of intense because he wants certain things we are not signing. So he cuts off our money supply. There were weird scenarios like that that started to occur. But once Clive Davis came into the picture and we had two managers, we side-stepped a lot of trouble with Lou, whereas Backstreet and *NSYNC were right in it with him. We had a lot of other people around us, caretakers to say, “Hey, by the way, there are some other rumors about Lou. Don’t be alone with him.” Those kinds of things.

I remember at one point we were with Lou in his office, and literally, he said, “Guys, I would love to keep this meeting going, but the FBI are here, so we’re going to have to wrap this meeting up now. Because the FBI are here.” And, no joke, the FBI came in and they investigated the offices while we were there.

What? Where’s that footage?

I know! It’s all come out now. Lou was sharing with me, in private, some of his con man-style tricks. Like, he had pictures of himself in his offices where it looked like there were these 747 airplanes in the back, supposedly he had this airplane company, and he goes, “Look at this picture of me with this airplane on the tarmac. Do you see anything weird about that photo?” And I go, “No, it’s you with your 747 airplane.” And he goes, “That’s a model airplane, hanging from fishing string, held from the right perspective so it looks like a full 747 airplane.” He was using little miniature models, and using little tricks of the eye, to make it look like these little miniature airplanes were real airplanes. He would use pictures like that to convince investors that he had all these companies and airplanes. As an 18-year-old kid, I’m thinking, Wow, this guy’s really smart, but also, Wow, this is so illegal, but he’s bragging to me about it.

I’m surprised he revealed his tricks to you.

It was total Catch Me If You Can, that movie. You’re kind of impressed because it’s this evil genius type of thing, but it’s still lying and fraudulent. Now it’s all coming out after years of being investigated by the FBI. That was when things really started to go South for Lou.

Some of your issues with Lou are documented on Making the Band, but he was also an executive producer and creative consultant. Did he have to approve the storyline? The show doesn’t paint him in the best light, but now it’s well-documented that he was guilty of so much more than what was presented on the show.

I wasn’t there, so this is speculation, but I imagine Lou regretted involving himself on camera and not having complete control of it. Lou didn’t think he did anything wrong. Lou’s giving hope to these young, talented kids that would never have a shot. He’s Mr. Money Bags. He’s coming up with millions of dollars behind the scenes—for rehearsals, styling sessions, and putting demos together to actually get you to the place where you can sign a deal—so he never looked at himself as having done anything wrong. The guy could sell anything to you. He was a master salesman. If you sat in a room with him, he’d have you convinced that he was Mother Theresa. He was very good and very shrewd at business. He was just taking advantage in so many different ways. And yet, he was the Berry Gordy of the Motown era, but it was all in O-Town, this whole new pop phase of music that he ushered in with *NSYNC, Backstreet, Britney, Aaron Carter, O-Town, and LFO. His fingerprint was on all of that, and that was a huge movement in music. It’s too bad that he was as crooked as he was.

How do you view the legacy of Making the Band, 20 years later?

There are always going to be gatekeepers, but I think the barriers of entry started coming down with shows like Making the Band. Now you have an opportunity, on a national level, to hear about an audition and show up for it. Making the Band was a shot for someone who would’ve never had a shot. Shows like American Idol and The Voice have continued to take that concept even further.

Making The Band really was the first of its kind. We proved the platform could work because we actually transformed it into a legitimate music career. For young, hopeful, talented people out there, I’m glad that Making the Band could pave the way, and I’m glad there are even more formats like this for young, talented, hopeful people who’d like a shot at success.
