Channel 1 Trophy

I watched Channel 1 Trophy (not the jumping tournament though), I mean just and only the performances, to spare myself seeing any possible drama or  Yagudin’s embarassing behaviour. And of course downloaded all the cute friendship gifs afterwards ;) 

PAIRS

It’s unbelievable how amazing Russian pair skating is. Also the added tension thinking that this competition will play a role in determining who’ll go to Worlds... Stressful, stressful, worrying about kittens (B/K) so much but also amazing to watch.  

Boikova/Kozlovski - Star of captivating happiness / Writing on the wall The throw in the short has been giving them trouble lately. But I love the kittens so much! And woooow, trying 3S - 3S in the free. And all the throws were great. 

Mishina/Galliamov - Esmeralda / Bohemian Rhapsody Showmens in the making. The throws, amazing spins to the music, and woow they are doing 3S - 3S. 

Pavliuchenko/Khodykin - Sing, sing, sing / SOS d’un terrien un detresse These programs are such a great choice for them. They are getting better at interpretation and at being more open. I love their lifts, and how Denis literally throws Daria down and between his legs on the ground. 

Tarasova/Morozov - Bolero / Adagio Maybe it’s because Sergei Voronov joined their coaching team ;)  but I’m beginning to like them. Undoubtedly their elements are world class but I’ve never been convinced by their programs. But now I’m beginning to see the performance, the interpretation.

LADIES

I usually don’t watch ladies, and Russian ladies even less so (unless it’s Zhenya or Sasha T.) Because all the quads, coaching drama, early retirements are not fun. And with “usually don’t watch ladies” I mean I-can-count-on-one-hand-how-many-times-I’ve-seen-eg. Anna S-level of not watching. So I’ll talk about ladies more generally than about other categories. 

Kamila Valieva - Storm / Bolero Daria Usacheva - Moulin Rouge / Romeo & Juliet Maia Khromykh - I’ll take care of you / Agony suite Anna Shcherbakova - O deux printemps / Morning passages

I’ve seen Kamila, Daria and Maia for the first time ever. And I have to say I liked their SPs quite a lot. Though the FPs seemed all a bit similar, even though the music was different... I really loved Kamila’s SP and her spins. (The FP could be renamed High kicks everywhere, though...) I really liked the way Daria moved on the ice and also appreciated that Maia’s SP music was a bit more modern. Anna is really nice to watch, so musical.

Alexandra Trusova - Love story, Appassionata / Romeo & Juliet I love her SP and now I think her FP has also improved a lot during the season. Her spins are also good. 

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva - Lovely / Chronicles of a mischievous child Liza truly is the empress. Really I admire how herself she is. When it comes to even just costumes, program changes adventures ;) continuing her career...

ICE DANCE

I loooooove everyone. 

Zagorski/Guerreiro - The greatest showman / Survivor Their skating is a great, engaging show without being theatrical though. Twizzels so good. 

Morozov/Bagin - Too darn hot / Terra rossa I don’t know... one of the few teams I feel no connection with. (No idea if it’s because I’m negatively biased because of their coach or for some other reason). But I have to admit that the FD really suits them. 

Skoptsova/Aleshin - Bonnie & Clyde / Never tear us apart They spark! They changed from one season to the other so much. I remember watching Fournier-Boundry/Sorensen’s amazing Bonnie & Clyde RD last season thkinking they were so much better. And now? Skoptsova/Aleshin are much more mature than last season, every movement is done precisely. Yes, I love them more and more. And so powerful in the FD. 

Shevchenko/Eremenko - Burlesque / The Illusionist Also yess yess yess! Their power. And the hydroblades in the FD

Stepanova/Bukin - Moulin Rouge / Cry me a river I have to admit I’m a bit confused? Did they change the music a bit? And no dramatic pause in the middle of the RD? I feel robbed (mainly of smiling at the confusion when half of the spectators thinks it’s the ending pose and begins to clap). But anyway, this program is 100 % drama and I like it. The FD idk... I don’t like it that much. But what I do like are all the lifts in the FD. 

Khudaiberdieva/Bazin - The Artist, Sing, sing, sing / Experience I like this team so much. Liza is a star. I really hope they’ll have much success in the future. I think that paradoxically this season was a blessing in disguise for them. It was Liza’s first season in seniors, their first season together and I think it was beneficial for them that they could participate in a lot of domestic competitions without too much pressure. I especially like their RD. The rotational lift at the end is awesome. 

MEN 

Mikhail Kolyada - Let’s get loud / The White Crow There’s nothing to say. I love the SP and I cry whenever I watch the FP. It’s a masterpiece. And Misha is getting comfortable again with the quads and added 4S! Yesss King.

Dima Aliev - Masquerade Waltz / L’immensitá This time not only return to the SP but also to the costume. And it was great (ignore the fall in stsq). Funny thing, Dima changed costume for the FP and suddenly I think it suits him more. Good job!

Makar Ignatov - I can’t go on without you / Je suis malade His 4Lo  [insert hearty eyes here] 

Mark Kondratiuk - Summertime / A Swan in born So cool and free in the short, it’s like a party on the ice. And an amazing FP. (We are all Zhenya, crying)

Andrei Mozalev - Sadeness Part 2 / The man with a harmonica He was so upset at nationals (and the camera man was filming him all the time) and that means that now he’s my baby. And he fought!

Sasha Samarin - Polushko polye / Keeping me alive My Sasha T_T I really hope he keeps his SP for next season because it’s a program he’s comfortable with. The step sequence is great. And he’s also improving in the FP... But he’s been injured, the jumps are not as secure as they were... To be honest, it’s quite clear that Sasha won’t be going to Worlds so he deserve some rest (and it’s been confirmed that he’s not going to Russian Cup finale).

38. CROATIA Roko - “The Dream” SemiFinal 2, second half

Roko is seventeen years old. 

I can sort of see it I guess? Roko has a weird thing going on with his face where he can simultaneously look like both a teenager and a 30 year old man. You have to give props where it’s due though: doubling your age by simplying picking up a microphone is an impressive talent. Fitting too, because I age by at least three decades each time I listen to  Roko’s song >:-). About that, btw

ENTRY ANALYSIS:

Ugh, *FINE*, I’ll elaborate, I guess. 🙄😒 The closest analogy to this toxic cloud of smarm is “Our Choice”, right down to the pandering Love&Peace type of message (NO CHARITY SONGS!!! EVER!!!) it is trying to force down our throats. It’s annoying and self-serving, and that’s just the gentle way of putting it, tbh!! 

However, there are moments where I wonder whether “The Dream” is in fact worse than “Our choice” because By Lazarev, is it loud. Really, fucking LOUD. To the point I’m almost hesitant to call it a ‘song’? Roko YELLS this song’s inane libretto at the top of his lungs and like... Yes, dude you’ve got pipes. A pity this is not the “Eurovision Singing Contest”. Be fun or stay home!!!

Now, I have heard that the “final version” will be just in Croatian though and that’s... actually a positive for me. 🤗 The fewer people that are exposed to war crimes such as “IIIIII DREAM OF LOOOOOOVE / YOOOOOOOOOU DREAM OF LOOOOOOOOOOOVE/ AAAAAAAAANGEEEEEEELS OF GOOOOOOOOOD”, the better.🤗

Who even wrote this tripe you ask? Why, our good fat old deluded ‘friend’ Jacques Houdek. Choquant, I know. I have no freaking clue what that walking ball of suet was thinking when he wrote this. Did he really believe people genuinely liked “My Friend” for the music??? (as opposed to laughing their ass off at how corny and stupid and gimmicky and shit it was). That’s why we can’t have nice things, friends. Offer Jacques a finger an altar boy and he’ll take the arm the whole choir. Such is the tragic fate of those that liked “My Friend” unironically 😭

NF CORNER:

It is generous to assume Croatia had options that could do well in Eurovision, but there were a handful of songs in Dora that could’ve proven entertaining. 

There is THIS hilarious, overstaged, messy, UGLY-AS-FUCK (yet somehow weirdly compelling) SPANISH-LANGUAGE superhero reggaeton anthem:

And for those desparately longing a return to 2002, there’s also this textbook example of early nillies’ Euroschlager ownage. 

Fun x2!! Would either qualify for the final? Probably not? I mean, they would advance for Romania or Moldova, but Croatia + Lowbrow Fun results more often in Daria’s than in Severina’s. Then again, would Roko qualify? Well...

QUALIFICATION ODDS: Not qualifying. 

Nope, he is absolutely not qualifying. Russia are in the same half of Croatia’s SemiFinal with another LOUD, but significantly better schlagerballad. “Scream” completely CANCELS “The Dream” (I secretly enjoy “Scream” lmfao, but we’ll get to that in a few weeks’ time) Of course, there are instances where Roko appears to be doing well in online polls, but bear in mind that Jacques is (OPENLY!!) recruiting Croatians on social media to vote for “The Dream” in those polls, so it means jack fucking squat.

Jacques does imply that Roko isn’t dead in the water, but... how is he not? “My Friend” at least had clear meme potential. What does ‘The Dream’ even have? Angel Wings? Good thing it does, I guess. Roko will need them once he flies out of the competition on Thursday...x

Projected placement: 12th-18th in the semifinal.

-top 3 bands/artists: For K-pop, it’s currently Red Velvet, NCT 127, and NU’EST W (lol always SM trash I’d mention them all if I could). For non K-pop, it’s probably Beyoncé, Maroon 5, and Lady Antebellum.

-books i’m reading: Right now I’m reading Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas (the latest book in the EXCELLENT Throne of Glass series). I’m also reading a lot of books on Korea and Seoul because I’ll be taking a trip there this spring!

Well yeah, actually I agree with you. My studies gave me a lot. I know it’s kind of popular to say that Uni gives you nothing, well at least in Russia it’s quite popular, but I think Uni gives you as much as you want to take. As for the wisdom, yeah. Being 30 I’m totally different person from being 25. A went through a lot of changes during that period of my life, and I grew a lot. I actually love being 30. I didn’t love being 14 or 20, although I enjoyed those years. But now I know I love my age.

You know what? I thought about it and realized that maybe it wasn’t that bad?? OMG, thank you so much for saying this! I never knew what to say to people who didn’t know me from when I was like five. I mean what do you say to people that are nice to you, and you care for them but there are no years and years of common memories and togetherness between you? And then one day I realized that for some reason people are okay with me just expressing myself, you know? Margaret/Forte: Established Relationship

When Forte had been asked by Margaret to a “meet the family” trip she hadn’t expected a trip to Sharance. She met Margaret’s sister, staying with her in her studio, the bright colors making Forte’s head spin, but Daria was kind and she really couldn’t complain. Of course when Meg suggested a one-on-one excursion, well, it was nice to get out of the house.

They traveled through town, greeting the townspeople as they went, marveling at the Sharance tree as they passed. Meg told her that there was a person who lived there, but they didn’t get a chance to meet him before heading up the path to Vale River. The sudden cold made Forte shiver, and the sounds of monsters made her wish he had brought her armor and weapon, but they turned off, making their way to a more serene part of the terrain. 

“This is my favorite place,” Meg said as they approached a rather large rosebush, covered entirely in ice. Forte was struck by the beauty of it, reaching out a hand to touch one of the delicate leaves. Meg smiled beside her.

“You like it?” she asked, Forte nodded.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. The unsaid words hung in the air: much like you. Forte took Meg’s hand, kissing it lightly.

“Thank you for bringing me here,” she said. Meg blushed.

“You’re welcome,” she replied. “I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.��

“I always enjoy myself when I’m with you,” Forte said. Meg giggled. 

“I think you’re getting a little mushy,” Meg joked, pulling Forte to her. Forte pressed her forehead to Meg’s.

“Only for you.”
