I was at an event today and made convo with a couple of strangers and at different times they asked if I’m a veteran, a teacher or a nurse, different people too.
It’s just kinda a weird. Cause it’s not the first time someone has thought I’m a teacher or a veteran. I must give off a vibe???

Shelton sat on an old oil drum. His teeth gritting against the not yet cigarette between them. Cleaning his sidearm vigorously. And once he finished cleaning, he just kept pulling the clip out and placing it back in. Just trying to do anything the distract himself from the two that were laughing and screwing around while cleaning drums. Snafu never scrubbed drums, and he always made that very clear.
His eyes darted up quickly to see Y/N smearing her oil covered hands all over Sledge's white T-shirt. Her smile widened when Sledge laughed and chased after her. The Cajun looked back at his weapon. His heart ached. Something he couldn't quite explain because he was so used to making girl's hearts ache. Huffing as he wasn't paying attention too much. His jealousy and anger within his mind taking over. And that's when the clip slipped and cut his hand. Dropping the firearm onto the ground and cursing loudly.
"God fucking damn it!" he shouted. Grabbing his now bleeding hand. It wasn't too deep, not enough to need stitched. But it was bleeding quite a lot. Y/N's head popped up and she pulled away from her boyfriend Sledge. She was a Corpsman. She was doing her duty. Helping a Marine who was being a dumb ass and sliced his hand. But to Shelton, it was different. He didn't want it to be different, he just wanted to let her do her job and not feel anything. Though, that wasn't the case. Anytime the young woman spoke to her, fixed him up, accidentally bumped or grazed him, a tingle shot through him that he never had felt before. He just kept falling more and more in love for the woman who was dating his best friend.
Y/N approached him with the same smile she did anybody. And Merriel still got lost in it. A soft, nervous smile came to his lips as he almost forgot about his hand that had been dripping blood all the way down his hand and forearm. "What did you do, Snafu?" she asked. Reaching for his bleeding hand and pulling out some gauze and bandages. Snafu didn't answer for a moment.  Just lost in watching her and the feeling of her hand holding his. He hadn't even realized when he was just silent and staring for about a minute. "Snafu? You okay? Man you must've lost a bit of blood," she said as she began to clean him up. Wrapping his hand up in the bandages and keeping an eye on.
The Marine snapped out of it and chuckled a bit. "Yeah, must've been some blood loss," he agreed. But oh no it wasn't. He was just falling deeper, and deeper in love with just some small town girl, doing her part in the war, and dating his best friend. He knew how screwed over he was. And yet, he didn't regret it.
Y/N pulled away slightly and looked at him. Her hands on her hips and she adjusted her helmet on her head. Merriel looked at her like she was a goddess standing before him. He could see past the smell of not being able to properly shower for weeks, the dirt and blood cakes onto her skin, the dirty uniform. He didn't care about any of it. She was just so beautiful and he couldn't tell her. Because her heart belonged to someone else, and not him.
"In a few hours, come back and find me so I can check that wound out. I got to make sure it doesn't get infected at all," she told him. Her smile still present. Snafu just nodded. Scared in that moment that if he was to open his mouth, something he didn't want coming out would have been said. That's right, Merriel Shelton was scared for once when it came to a girl.
Y/N gave one last nod before turning on the heels of boots to jog back to Eugene. Calling out his name as she did so. Leaving Merriel sitting there, jealous and angry. But not angry at Y/N or Sledge. Angry at himself for doing this to himself. He fell in love with a girl he couldn't have. Staring at his one bandages hand the other that was covered in blood, oil, and dirt. Sighing as he just wished he could go home and forget all about her and Sledge.
///
Watching the two Marines in love walk besides each other. Laugh together. Just do every damn thing together burnt Merriel more and more each time he saw. It wasn't their fault. And Shelton knew it wasn't his fault. Or maybe it was. He didn't mean to fall for her, he was friends with her first! It was clear that the past few days, as the feelings grew stronger, the more angry and jealous the Merriel got. And he felt he was going to snap.
That night was tonight.  The Cajun sat on his little cot. Just listening to Eugene and Y/N. Trying his best to regulate his emotions, but Merriel wasn't that type of man to handle anger and or jealousy well. And any Marine in the company could have told you that. He was picking at the skin around his nails and the large scab that was forming where the clip had given him the nasty cut. Anything to try to distract himself. But the sounds of their laughter and chatter was just too loud.
"Hey, Snafu? Why have you been so quiet? I haven't heard a lick of sarcasm come from you at all," Y/N commented with a soft chuckle. With a small grunt, that did Merriel. He didn't mean to come off so strong, but he did.
"Why do you care, Southern Bell?" he asked cockily. Even when angry or jealous, or whatever the mixture of feelings he was feelings, he just couldn't get himself to truly insult her. Though his tone was more than enough to get the point across. Y/N looked taken aback, he had never used that way of talking towards her.
"Excuse me?" she asked in shock. Her eyes narrowed at him. Merriel just scoffed and looked at her with the cold stare. He couldn't be serious right now. Merriel wanted to be nicer, to just stop his antics but he also thought that maybe he needed to do this. Maybe he just had to get his emotions out and that could help his case.
"You heard me," he responded coldly. Eugene was just as shocked at his best friend's actions as Y/N was.
"Snafu, what's all this about?" asked Sledge as he stood. Placing an arm in front of Y/N. Narrowing his eyes at him. "All she asked was why you were so quiet," he added. His voice angry, yet laced with confusion. Snafu never acted like this towards Y/N. It was way out of character. And the Cajun knew this of himself. And he wished he could just stop acting this way, but he needed a way to get his emotions out. Even if it meant not doing it in the best or healthy way.
Y/N sat there. Deeply hurt. Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. The such change in his emotions. Maybe he was just upset and she was annoying him. Maybe he needed a breather. Y/N was a very caring, and understanding individual. Sighing as she stood. "I see you aren't in the best mood, Shelton. And I don't know if I caused it, but I think I'll let you chat with Sledge. I have to make my rounds anyways," Y/N stated. Placing her helmet onto her head as she walked off.
Sledge turned to Snafu and immediately gave whatever he was giving to Y/N. "What the hell was that all about, Shelton?" he stood up angrily. He might be some skinny kid from Alabama, but when it came to Y/N, he wasn't going to let one of his best friend's treat her like nothing. "She is one of your friends, what is your damn problem?" he asked. Snafu sighed and just ignored Sledge. Standing up and pursing his lips.
"Sledge.. I can't explain it," was all he said. Sledge huffed and blew him off. Sitting back on his cot and pulling out a book. Knowing it wouldn't be worth the fight anymore. Snafu decided to be a man and understand what he did was wrong and.. apologize. Something he didn't do too often. Going out to go in pursuit of the woman.
After about five minutes of looking, he found Y/N sitting by herself on the line. Just peering out into the thick jungle trees that faded into the darkness of night. She looked up at him when she heard his boots hit the dusty ground besides her. Though, turning back to look out into the trees. Merriel stayed silent, and so did Y/N. Yet it wasn't awkward. It was pretty calming, strangely.
Y/N's head had dropped, she sighed, deciding to finally break the silence. "Eugene and I split up, you know," she said softly. Snafu's eyes widened as he couldn't believe it. But they were still hanging out? Y/N noticed his reaction and let out a soft chuckle. "We are still friends. But.. the reason why is because.. because I'm being sent home. All the way back to my home town in Louisiana," she said softly.
"What? Going home? Why?" he asked. Though, he could feel his heart beating out of his chest. Maybe he still stood a chance. His jealousy washing away as stared at the pretty young woman in front of him.
Y/N just shrugged in response. It was clear she didn't want to leave. But, she had been in the Pacific with the Marines even before him. Maybe it was just the Navy thought she could be switched out.
"I was just told earlier today. Sledge and I didn't want to wait or live so far away. So we thought it was best to split. And.. I think I enjoyed someone else's presence more," she said with a soft smile. Snafu quickly found that jealous feeling just crawling through him once again. Though he masked it well with a swift smile and a head tilt.
"Who is the lucky man?" he asked. Hearing Y/N laugh softly and seeing her cheeks redden in the slight moonlight that peaked through the jungle's tree leaves made his heart skip a beat. Y.N looked at him, the same stupid smile that she always had.
"He is Cajun, also from Louisiana, and even a bit of a sarcastic fellow," always one for jokes. Snafu wasn't the brightest, and it took him a minute to render what she was saying. His eyes widening looking at her.
"You talkin' about me, Y/N?" he asked, kind of in shock. Y/N snorted and just nodded. Leaving Snafu in shock. "Does... Does Sledge know?" he asked. His tough guy front washing off quickly. Was she actually being serious.
"Yes, Eugene knows. It was strange how we talked about it. He understood, it was in a strange mutual way. Jeez, feelings are weird," Y/N laughed. Rubbing her face.  Snafu watched as she stood up, he quickly followed her actions. Standing in front of her. This was his chance. Dipping his head down to press his lips onto his, though his lips connected with her hand. He pulled away and looked at her with a confused look. "I'm leaving tomorrow, Shelton. I want you to live for me and come back to me," she stated. Pulling out a piece of paper with an address scribbled down on it. Placing it into Snafu's hand. "Find me after this shit-mess. Then you can get your long awaited kiss," she said with a sly smile. Standing on the toes of her boots to press a kiss to his dirt covered cheek. Turning to walk away, probably to pack her stuff. leaving Merriel standing there, on hand touching the place where she had placed her lips, the other holding the piece of paper she handed to him. Just staring at it. Completely starstruck. It was so strange.
///
Months later after Y/N had returned to her home, the war in the Pacific had ended. Snafu and Y/N did not exchange any letters. Snafu always began to write one, but never finished them. He never knew how to write out his feelings, words and emotions weren't exactly his specialty. Y/N never sent letters either. She wasn't one for letters. Never written one in her life and never received one. The two relied on their trust for each other, and Y/N believed that Snafu would come back to her. And that is what Corporal Shelton did.
Sitting on the train in his dress greens. Anxiously bouncing his knee as he waited for his stop. Sledge had been fast asleep as it was late at night when the train stopped in New Orleans. Grabbing his travel bag and looking at Sledge one last time before heading off of the train. Pulling that old piece of paper that was covered with dirt and little droplets of blood. But the pen marks of Y/N's address still clear as day.
Merriel called a taxi and climbed on in. Handing the piece of paper to the driver, who looked at the paper clearly slightly disgusted, and just nodded. The driver of course asked him questions about his service. Which Snafu didn't exactly answer them in depth. He didn't enjoy talking about it. And he don't think he ever would. And it didn't help that only one thing was on his mind. Y/N L/N.
The ride in the taxi wasn't all too long. Or maybe it just went by fast because almost the entire time Snafu was staring outside the taxi window, watching the lights on all the buildings as he drove by.
When the vehicle came to a stop, he payed the driver and grabbed his bag. Pulling himself out of the taxi and hearing the tire screech as the taxi driver drove off. Leaving Merriel to stare at the house in front of him. Mentally praying that this was the correct address. All of his usual smoothness and confidence seemed to almost to wash away completely as he was just standing there. He could feel his heart beating in his throat.
Gulping as he approached the steps. Walking up them slowly and standing at the door. He was hesitant. But after a minute or so, he brought his fist up to knock on the wooden door. Knocking three times. Lowering his hand and waiting, He could hear his own heartbeat.
He could hear footsteps approaching the door. Gulping as he clutched onto his bag even tighter. Snafu watched as the door opened, but his heart dropped. A woman did open the door. But that woman wasn't Y/N. It was some random girl with long blonde hair. She was pretty, but she wasn't Y/N. Her face was etched with a look of confusion.
"May I help you?" she asked. Raising and eyebrow at him. Snafu just gulped and coughed slightly.
"Uh, is a girl by the name of Y/N L/N live her?" he asked. Clearly nervous. The woman smiled wide and laughed softly. Leaving Merriel a little confused.
"So you must be Merriel Shelton. She is inside, I'll call for her," she grinned. She had spoken about him. He nodded in response. Feeling a little relieved he didn't make any mistake and that Y/N didn't end up giving him some fake kind of address. "Y/N! You have a visitor!" the young woman called into the home. Looking back at Merriel to give him a small wink before moving out of the way of the door.
He heard her feet approach the door. "What do you mean "visitor"? Do you know what time of night it is?" she asked. The same type of annoyance and sarcasm she used with him constantly.  smile coming to his lips as she came into view. Her eyes met his and she paused. Coming to a full stop. The ends of her lips slowly curling up into a smile.
"I guess you kept your word, uh Shelton?" she asked. Merriel dropped his travel bag and smiled at her. He survived the war for her, and her only.
"I guess I did, did you keep yours?" he asked. Letting out a loud laugh, Y/N ran towards him and ran into his arms. Merriel's arms went around her waist as he chuckled. Y/N pulled her head back and quickly pressed her lips against his. His lips tasted of cheap cigarettes. While hers tasted of cheap red wine. A combo the two didn't think they would enjoy as much as they did.
When they pulled away from each other, Y/N smiled up at him. Placing her hands onto his chest.
 "I guess I did too."

WIP Wednesday
Okay, it’s a day late, but here’s an excerpt from The Gundam Called Deathscythe...
By the time Relena  and Pagan arrived at the Alliance Navy Port, the entire base was in chaos.  Here and there, small explosions went off within seconds of each other, resulting in many injured people.  Few soldiers or guards were left on duty, since the main fleet had gone out in order to retrieve the sunken unidentified mobile suit.  Several soldiers, looking for medical personnel to aid the injured, found the abandoned ambulance instead.
"Fall back, load up the wounded, and get them to the hospital, ASAP!" one of the base guards yelled at the empty ambulance, thinking the crew was nearby.  "Hey, Corpsman!  Get off your ass and do your job!  Where is he?"
Elsewhere at the port, two guards waiting in the control room of a docked submarine were startled by a grenade dropping in their midst.  The grenade exploded, and Hiiro began loading their payload of missiles onto the deck of the submarine.
Unnoticed by anyone, Relena sneaked onto the base and began searching for Hiiro.  She cautiously approached the quay where the submarines were anchored.  She didn't understand why, but she had the feeling he might be there.  Then, as suspected, she found the boy she was looking for.
"Hiiro!  It is you!" Relena said, then, seeing the torpedoes, walked over to stand just behind him as he continued to work at arming them.  "Hiiro, what are you doing here?  Tell me!  Who are you, anyway?  Those are torpedoes, aren't they?  I can tell!  I want to know who you are.  Talk to me, Hiiro!
"Relena...?" Hiiro turns slowly and seems to come out of a daze, noticing her for the first time.
"Hiiro..."
"You're in too deep.  Good-bye, Relena."
His expression hardened as he drew a pistol and leveled it at Relena's chest, her eyes widening in shock as she emitted a startled gasp.  Hiiro began to squeeze the trigger, but found himself being fired upon instead.  He was struck in the arm, and the impact tumbled him to the deck of the carrier.  Relena gave a frightened cry, holding her ears and dropping to her knees at the hideous report.  She turned and looked at Hiiro, who was kneeling as he held his bleeding bicep.
"HIIRO!" she cried.
"Who are you?!" Hiiro demanded, voice edged with pain as he stared down the ship at his assailant.  It was another young man, this one dressed all in black with a long, chestnut brown braid trailing over his shoulder.  He was crouched on the deck, aiming a pistol at them both.
"It's pretty obvious which one of us is the bad guy here," the black clad youth replied.  "Are you all right, Miss?  Huh?"
Relena's would-be rescuer watched in disbelief as she ran to Hiiro and knelt down next to him.
"Hiiro?  Are you all right?" she asked, eyes nearly round from shock.  Hiiro ignored her and lunged for his pistol, grunting with pain from the effort of doing so.  The other boy shot him a second time, creasing him across his right thigh, and Hiiro tumbled to the deck again, clutching his leg.
"Don't strain yourself any further, pal.  Remember, you're injured."
As the other boy took aim at Hiiro for a third time, Relena darted between with her arms outstretched, effectively blocking his aim.
"Stop it!" she exclaimed. "Why'd you have to hurt him?"
"Hey, wait a second...!  I was...!" the black-clad youth exclaimed as Relena tore strips from her dress to bandage Hiiro's wounds, leaving Hiiro with a puzzled expression.  "Aw, shit!  That's just great!  How the Hell did I end up being the bad guy here?!"
An alarm on the other boy's watch sounded.  He looked out towards the ocean, where the barely discernible forms of a pair of mobile suits moved along the surface of the water.
"Dammit!  They've already reached the surface!  I must've miscalculated the tide...!"
"What on Earth are those things?!  OH!"
"Sorry, Miss, but I can't allow you look at 'em," the boy in black said in a harsh voice, obstructing Relena's sight with an emergency flare.  "Now, I'm sure you've got a real good reason for being out here so late at night, but you'd better do yourself a favor, walk away, and forget everything you've seen here tonight.  Save yourself a whole lotta grief."
Using the distraction, Hiiro stood, darted across the deck of the ship, and leapt from it to the missile rack, still hanging from the crane in preparation for loading.  The other boy dropped the flare, took aim and fired again.  Hiiro made a graceless landing on the missiles and straddled the topmost one.
"You haven't had enough yet?!  Back off!"
"That's MY mobile suit you're trying to hijack, jackass!" Hiiro shouted back, raising his fist.
"Hey!  What are you doing?!"
Hiiro punched the biggest button on the timer he wired on to the missile.  The lights on the unit turned red and the missiles launched, breaking free of the crane and heading directly for the Gundams, dropping Hiiro ass first into the ocean.
"Finally... it's done.  Mission... accomplished."
A few moments later, as Duo and Relena watched from the deck of the submarine, a huge explosion caused the water to rise in a glowing dome of light, taking the two strange mobile suits back into the bosom of the sea.
"NOOOOOO!" Duo exclaimed as the two mobile suits once again sank below the surface.  "Damn it, he knew Gundanium's impact tolerances!  That means he's the pilot of the other suit!"
Duo looked at Hiiro, now floating face down in the water, clicked his tongue in sympathy, and then heard the distant wailing of sirens speeding towards them.  He raced back to the dock towards the pier's ladder where a waiting dingy was moored, jumped in, and started the outboard motor.
"What the Hell's going on here?  Who are you guys?" Relena finally asked the plait-haired youth.
"For your own sake, Miss, you might be better off if you didn't get mixed up with this guy.  Just sayin'."
Leaving those words of wisdom behind him, Duo sped away over the surface of the sea.
"Hey, wait a damn minute, you!  What about...?"
Amid more explosions and thick, black smoke, the perplexed Relena looked helplessly at the motionless Hiiro floating on the water as the black clad boy made his escape behind her.  Grumbling about boys being pricks, she took off her shoes and stripped down to her underwear, then jumped into the frigid water with a squeak and swam out to the unconscious boy.
"I said it on the beach the day before yesterday, and I'll say it again today... damn, you're heavy for such a scrawny-looking guy," she said, pulling Hiiro up to the dock as the sound of sirens got closer.
Relena quickly redressed herself as the MPs finally showed themselves.  She was going to have a lot of explaining to do, and not just to her parents.
