QUICK COMBO: ON | SET ME FREE | D-DAY
My thoughts on this QC:
I'm generally not one to curse but this is my seize-the-day-you-MF'er combo. Very empowering in a 'screw-you' kinda way. I'm actually really disappointed we don't have more content around the song D-Day given it shares the name with the album. I go back and forth between D-Day and Amygdala as my favorites from that album.

2023 Retrospective: Worst Comeback/Song
A quick disclaimer: just because I dislike these songs, that doesn't mean others can't find enjoyment in them.
Jungkook feat. Jack Harlow – 3D
Without Jack Harlow, this honestly is a decent song. But, oh man, does Jack’s part drag this song down so much. I usually never let one part of a song drag my opinion of it, but here… congratulations. This song turned from a 5-6 to a 2. Jack Harlow just appears like a giant douchebag and his rap part is borderline tasteless and doesn’t fit the rest of the song at all. Like, you have Jungkook singing about how he wants to see your body, if you let him and then it turns to Jack and he just starts “rapping” about how many girls he has and “all his ABGs” (Asian Beauty Girls, for those that don’t know) and it genuinely creates so much whiplash that I’m wondering if anyone checked if it fit the rest of the song. No one heard this and thought: “Maybe we should change this?” Really? Also, why is it my problem if you can’t keep your dick in your pants?
Honourable/Dishonourable Mentions:
SHINee – HARD
Putting a SHINee song into this category physically hurts me, but good lord. This style doesn’t fit them at all. Maybe there is a good song in here, but it has been cut up so much and stitched back together in a really unflattering way. This also might be the one and only time where I actually agree with SM: Juice really should have been the title track. That song at least is fun to listen to. But really, the biggest crime this song commits, is that Onew adds nothing to the song. Like, you could (and can…) take him out and the song wouldn’t change. It wouldn’t sound worse. It might actually sound a tiny bit better (don’t kill me for this, please).
GOT the Beat – Stamp on It
Whenever I think SM has run out of annoying samples to add to a song, they prove me wrong with an even more annoying one. Also, why do the girls continue to get so many weird songs? This group has so much talent and this really is the best you can give them? Are you trying to boycott your own groups?
Jimin – Set Me Free, Pt. 2
I already made a post about this song, when it came out and my opinion hasn’t changed for the better. If anything, it has gotten worse. Sure, he is a great dancer, but you can’t save a song by just being a great dancer. And this song really has nothing to be saved. It doesn’t sound like Jimin at all. It was autotuned so much, that I actually think this was sung by an AI instead of Jimin. And while Like Crazy was better in that regard, it also gave me nothing. I actively forgot that song while I was listening to it. And honestly, writing this, I am so tired of BTS right now. I hope that they get some better perspectives during their military enlistment.
BABYMONSTER – Batter Up
In typical YG fashion, this debut got delayed by so much that most of the hype around the group vanished. The most people probably will remember this group for was the really scummy debut roll out YG did with them. The song itself sounds like a watered down BLACKPINK song. There is nothing of personality to any of it. They also used a nails on chalkboard sound effect in the song and I don’t understand why they would do that.

🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
◇◇◇◇◇
"Y/N, more people are arriving and management wants us to greet them. Something about photo ops." Jackson, your fellow lead, says as he pokes his head into your dressing room. His entrance intruded on your thoughts of the beautiful brunette that effectively stole your heart away within a night, leaving you completely at her mercy despite being worlds away.
"Alright, just give me a second." He nods and goes to stand outside your door -- you're expected to be seen together for a good portion of the night. Thankfully, though, Jackson is a good guy; he cares a lot about you, always doing everything in his power to keep you happy. The feeling is mutual; it's nice to have someone in your corner in an industry as unforgiving as this one.
"Ready?" You ask, opening the door after you've checked yourself in the mirror and smoothed down any unruly hairs or clothing. Looking presentable is a must tonight -- you can't appear as wistful as you've been feeling lately.
"Sure am." His answer is a bit unnecessary, seeing as how you asked a rhetorical question, but you send him a smile nonetheless. He offers you an arm, and soon the two of you are walking back towards the entrance of the building.
--------
Waves of flashing cameras greet you for the second time tonight, now capturing you in your full glammed-out look. The first time had been a few hours ago when your team arrived to begin setting up and get all of you ready.
The entire cast now stands stretched out in front of the large screen that will air the movie later, your arms around each other as you smile for the cameras. Promotional pictures shine behind you on the screen, serving as a perfect backdrop as they cycle through their predetermined slideshow.
Eventually, you all disperse to greet some guests.
"Thank you for coming, Mr. Choi. It's wonderful seeing you again."
"I hope you enjoy our performances, Mrs. Lee. Your support has meant the world to us."
"Ah, Jeong! How've you been?"
Countless faces pass by as you work hard to greet everyone, knowing full well your company will be upset if you slack off now. It's everyone's big night, so they obviously can't have their leading lady stopping for even a minute.
You're almost ready to run to the restroom in order to have a moment to yourself, free of prying eyes and judgemental stares; but what you hear next sends a chill down your spine, an all too familiar ache in your chest.
It's Jennie. She's laughing that wonderful laugh of hers, taking you back in time to when you first heard it. Her members must've said something really hilarious, because all of them are doubled over, clutching their stomachs with laughter.
"Hey again," Jackson greets, and for a second you almost want to tell him to leave you alone. You don't, though, knowing you have no right to pull something like that.
"YG's girl group just got here. Do you want to say hello?" Of course you do. You want to run into Jennie's arms and spin her around, reveling in the way her arms would surely wrap around you in that warm embrace that's so uniquely hers. You want to tell her a stupid joke to make her laugh again, like she had just a few moments ago. You want to talk to her.
But you don't.
"No, not right now. I'm going to visit with my family, if that's alright with you."
"Sure, sure." He says considerately, unwrapping his arm from you. You press a friendly kiss to his cheek as a thank you, letting it serve as a goodbye as well.
"Eomma!" You shout, squeezing through the crowd when you spot her at one of the banquet tables lining the front of the room. The rest of the space is filled with rows of chairs, already set out for when the movie premieres.
"Ah, baby girl. We're so proud of you." She says, holding you in a tight embrace as tears spill from her eyes. Her arms bring you comfort like no other, and you're beyond grateful to have her here tonight. Some of your friends stand behind her, too, waiting for their turn to say hello.
Jennie watches you interact with them from across the room, and she feels a pang of sadness run through her. She's not naive to how these things work: your other cast mates had come over to greet her and girls, snapping pictures and even starting meaningful conversations in some cases -- all of that meaning you had been given the opportunity to do the same, but turned it down. Do you not want to see her? Maybe she had misjudged your night together. You are an actress, after all.
She shakes her head, physically willing the thoughts to go away as she turns her focus to whatever new person was talking to them now. She continues stealing glances in your direction, finding you looking somewhere else every time. She'd give just about anything to have you look at her, if only for a moment. Just a glance, she thinks to herself, praying the universe hears her pleas. They seem to fall on deaf ears, though, because before she knows it the MC is calling all of you onto stage and the guests are directed to their seats.
"Let's welcome the cast of Empress of the Heart!" The MC says cheerily, tucking his notecard underneath his arm in order to clap along with the audience. "They've spent months working hard for this project, travelling to filming locations in different countries, learning new languages, and facing their fears. We hope all of you thoroughly enjoy their performances. Now, I'll hand it over to our leads."
You and Jackson bow towards the audience, waving at them politely as they applaud you again. He looks at you, a silent question of if you want to speak first, and you nod. Taking the mic from him, you say, "Firstly, I'd like to thank our incredible cast and crew. They played just as important a role in this movie as Jackson and I, and we're endlessly grateful for their hard work." More cheers ring out at your kind hearted show of appreciation, and you speak up again once they've died down.
"These past few months have been some of the best of my life, and I owe that to people like you, and my fans. Thank you for taking a chance on me and supporting me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you." You say sincerely, looking into the camera that's recording all of this for exclusive content. When the movie drops for the public in a couple weeks, they'll be able to buy this tape as well and see highlights from the premiere. The thought of your fans watching it from the comfort of their own homes, yelling praises at their screens, makes you smile.
Jackson takes over now, smoothly transitioning into his own mini speech of thanks. You stop your eyes from meeting the one pair that they so desperately want to, always keeping them trained on other parts of the crowd. If you allow your resolve to crumble, you'll get lost in her all over again and potentially screw up one of the biggest nights of your life. You can't take a risk like that.
You laugh at something Jackson says, some joke about how you had to face your fear of heights for a scene in the movie, and Jennie takes a deep breath. She's not exactly jealous, but yet that's precisely the feeling that creeps its way into her chest. She knows that you're avoiding her for some reason, but she has no idea why. Did she do something wrong?
--------
Why, why, did they have to sit Blackpink in the row right behind you? It's karmic, the universe's way of pushing you back to each other, but you don't know how to feel about it all. You can feel her eyes boring into you as each new scene plays, silently begging for you to turn around and talk to her, even if it's impolite to do so in the middle of a movie.
You don't, though, fighting every fiber of your being to keep yourself from giving in.
Despite the emotions that swirl within her that pay little mind to the number they're doing on her heart, she actually finds herself enjoying parts of the movie. It's bittersweet, seeing you up there, but you command the screen in a way that seems to steal all coherent thoughts from her brain. You're truly skilled, and she gets a kick out of watching you hide behind your hands in embarrassment when your co-stars offer whispered praises.
During one scene in particular, though, Jennie's eyes drop to the floor, her teeth clenched together tightly. Your character just saved Jackson's from certain doom, and the two of you are sharing a long-overdue kiss. The rest of the crowd lets out approving noises at this, but Jennie is comforted by her members' soft smiles and reassuring touches. You feel guilty, for some reason, knowing that anything you were a part of made Jennie so upset. It shouldn't matter, though -- I mean, it's not like you and Jackson are actually together -- but still, it hurts Jennie to see him kiss you and hold you in the ways she wants to.
The rest of the night carries on much the same, but later on, once you get enough courage to look for Jennie, she's gone. The other girls are too, and a sinking feeling settles in your chest. Gone -- again -- just like all that time ago. Your reasons for staying away from her were legitimate, but they felt nothing of the sort as you glanced around the crowd again.
The movie ended earlier, already getting good marks and reviews from the critics who came to view it, and now the "afterparty" of sorts was kicking in. You hadn't expected the girls to stay long after the movie, but you'd at least hoped to utter a word to them, if nothing else. A smile would've sufficed.
Realizing she's really gone, you let out a sad sigh and make your way down the hall, towards the large doors that lead to the balcony. If anything can clear your mind right now, surely it's a chilly breeze.
You lay an arm against the sturdy railing, leaning on it as you massage your neck. All of the stress you've been put under is showing in the form of painful knots, far too many to get rid of in one go. You sigh, letting your head lull forward and lay against your arm.
"And here I was thinking I wouldn't see you again."
At the utterance, you turn around to find her leaned up against the stone wall of the building with a playful smirk on her lips. She's back to her old self in an instant, but you can sense the undertones of nervousness in her voice.
The darkness of the night that envelops you two makes her eyes look even more feline -- even more alluring -- and it takes everything in you not to lose your train of thought.
"Jennie." Her name comes out as a pleased declaration more than anything else, a familiar flutter taking over your heart at the sight of her. It's a warm feeling in your chest, and you never want it to go away.
You try not to focus on the sensual swaying of her hips or the teasing look in her eye as she pushes herself away from the wall to approach you.
"I thought you left." You breathe out, remembering how sad you were earlier.
"Without getting you alone first? How could I?" The implication behind her words gives you pause, causing a blush to begin forming on your cheeks. You curse yourself for being so easy.
"I've missed you like crazy," she confesses, allowing herself to be vulnerable again. Now in front of you, she brushes the back of her fingertips against your cheek as you look into her eyes.
"I've missed you, too -- more, probably," you say, the declaration sounding like an embarrassed sigh as it leaves your lips. She smiles at that -- her genuine, gummy smile that you've missed so much -- and your heart flutters again.
She debates on asking the question that sits on the tip of her tongue, waiting to be answered. "Why didn't you greet me before, at the party?" Her voice is small now, insecure, as she avoids your gaze and stills her movements.
"I-..." you start, finding yourself at a loss for words. Should you tell her how you feel?
"I was afraid you'd throw me off my game. You're pretty distracting, you know?" You reply, nudging her shoulder playfully. A hint of a smile tugs at her cheeks, unsure if it should finish the job and turn into a big one.
"I thought I did something wrong." She informs.
"Not at all. In fact, you did things a little too right, if you ask me. I can't stay away from you, Jennie." Her heart trips and stumbles over itself in its pursuit of gaining a steady rhythm again, thrown off course by your words.
Growing brave, she suggests, "Go on a date with me, then. I wanna have more nights like that with you." She whispers that last part, ghosting her fingertips over your skin to awaken the memories.
"I'd like that," you smile, leaning in to kiss her lips. It's soft and gentle, much like your first one, and your heart hammers in your chest. It seems to forget that you've done this before, choosing instead to subject you to the giddiness you felt that first time with her.
She pulls back to rest her forehead against yours, settling her arms around your waist, saying, "I've wanted to do that all night." You smile for the millionth time because of her, happy with how things have turned out.
"Do it again, then."
And she does.

What Do YOU Want? Pt. 1
A Kwon Jiyong series ft. Kim Jiwon
Genre: Angst/Fluff
Word count: 2,500+
Summary: The most important person in the world to you can appear most often when you least expect it. But through everything, you can’t forget about you and your own happiness. Who are you happy with? Who is the best for you?
Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10
Your patience was wearing thin.
It had been nearly 3 weeks since you and Jiyong had spent any time together and it was time to address it. Since you worked during the morning/day at YG and then spent the early evenings in your studio, you made sure that you had all night free and you assumed Jiyong would do the same. But you were mistaken. Again.
It was really starting to break your heart how much less and less he seemed to have you in mind when he made decisions recently. You both would often discuss dinner plans early in the day, or meet up at the YG food court for a quick lunch, or just run your plans for the rest of the day by the other person at least once. Lately he would often decide to spend all day and night in the YG studio or go out to dinner with friends without an invitation or acknowledgment of you and then come home too tired to even enjoy your company. You saw him every night but you knew that things just weren’t the same anymore.
Maybe he was just too comfortable with living together and wasn’t putting in the same effort to your relationship because of it. That would be a simple fix, right? Or maybe it was something more.
What if he met someone?
You wiped the thought out of your head as quickly as it came. Your heart was already breaking, you didn’t have the time to put yourself through more misery over stumbling through the unknown. But what else do you think when the person you love more than anything in the world, hardly treats you like a friend anymore? He used to make you feel like the luckiest person in the world with just one smile after he came home from a long day at work. He used to hold you close and rub your back reassuringly after he woke up to you having a nightmare beside him. He never had to buy you expensive things to make you feel loved, though there was plenty of that. (No matter how much you would insist you definitely didn’t need that diamond choker…) You would lie awake all night just talking about anything and everything. You had been there for each other through every high and low and everyone around would complement the strength of your relationship. He used to tell you all the time how he had never felt this way about anyone before and that he couldn’t imagine life without you.
But above all, the most important part of your relationship, was he never actually had to say any of that for you to know. You felt his love for you and at some of the lowest points in your life, it served as the only thing that you were 100% sure about.
But lately you found yourself lying awake in the middle of the night and gazing at him in his sleeping state. You had always done this since you first started spending nights together and when you eventually moved in; you would observe how he snored ever so lightly and your heart would warm every time he shifted in his sleep to get closer and wrap his arms around you. Now however was different. You now stared at the love of your life and couldn’t fight the tears in your eyes that came when you started to wonder when the space that divided your side from his started feeling like it was 300 miles long. He would wake up at 7am for work, kiss the top of your head and say “I love you so much. Have a good day today, jagi” just like he has done every day since you moved in. But now it just felt like a mere routine and utterly heartless. The smile that used to touch his eyes and warm your heart now made you more uncertain than ever before.
What are you supposed to do when the person you miss so much is actually still sitting right in front of you?
You weren’t a confrontational person in the slightest, so your best tactic for letting him know something was wrong was to shut down. In the past, the second he noticed you doing this he would ask you what was wrong and wouldn’t stop until you told him. “Jagi, something is wrong and I want to do whatever I can to fix it. Please, just tell me.” But as of lately, that didn’t happen. He would ask you what was wrong and once you lied and said “Nothing, jagiya, I’m fine,” he would believe you and that was that. He wouldn’t ask again the rest of the night.
Something needed to be done. You needed to pull yourself together and talk to him about it. No more quietly crying yourself to sleep. No more pausing dance rehearsal to run to the bathroom and break down because you couldn’t handle putting on a show to everyone at YG anymore. You were not ok and the one person that needed to know that, didn’t.
Y/N: Hey. Come home for dinner tonight? I’ll order take out and we can just hang out?
You texted him on your lunch break before you went back to teaching the trainees some new choreography and hoped to God that he didn’t already have plans. Your attempts to spend time together in the past couple of weeks have all failed. Why should this be any different? But you needed to be hopeful. This talk needed to happen. Even if your heart was telling you the outcome wouldn’t be pretty.
**They say love is blind, Oh baby you’re so blind** You silently cursed the ringtone you chose for his text alerts for the improper timing of such a lyric. You snatched your phone out of your pocket with lightning speed, nearly spilling the coffee you had just poured yourself in the YG food court.
J: Of course, jagi. See you at 8?
Y/N: Sounds good to me <3
It was set. You thought you would feel some relief when he actually agreed to spending time with you, but you only felt your anxiety increase. You realized that you had no idea what to even say to him.
For the rest of the day you were a wreck. You tried your best to put on a fake smile and teach all the trainees the new choreography you’d come up with, but there was noticeably less passion and heart in your moves. You hit every angle with laziness, making it clear that your mind was preoccupied. This went on for the next few hours.
What am I supposed to say to him?
You were wrecking your brain all day trying to come up with a fluid script that you could run through in front of him. Just tell him you aren’t happy. Tell him you don’t feel like he’s invested in you or your relationship anymore. You know what, tell him to fuck off!
You were definitely flustered, and the constant physical movements during rehearsals weren’t helping. You dismissed the second group of trainees and checked the time on your phone.
“3:00”
You groaned loudly, thinking no one was left in the studio until you heard a distinctive chuckle towards the door. You jumped, which only made Bobby laugh louder once he realized he startled you. “That’s right, it’s your favorite time of day!” he teased.
He wasn’t wrong though. Lately, iKon’s dance rehearsals had been the only thing that had brought you any kind of stress relief. You had been hired by YG as a top choreographer, given your fame in the US, and your latest project aside from teaching YG’s style to the newest trainees was preparing iKon for their debut. They were already great dancers so working with them was a breeze. You’d grown to love these boys and since they were all close to you in age, you were able to joke around with them effortlessly. You looked forward to 3pm as a fun 2 hour break from the rest of your stress filled day. The only reason you had been less than thrilled to see the time today was because it meant you had 5 more hours to endure before you’d meet with Jiyong for dinner.
“Haha, I’m sorry Bobby, my mind is a bit elsewhere today. I wasn’t…”
“Hey, you don’t have to explain anything to me, Y/N, I’m just messing with you!” You smiled in relief as he ran to his place in the middle of the studio and jumped in the air, while twirling, and landed superhero style. It was the first genuine smile that came across your face all day.
The next two hours with Bobby and the boys flew by. The rehearsal was spent perfecting choreography on a single from their new album and it was coming along amazingly. At 5:00, the boys were all saying goodbye and that meant it was time for you to do your solo work, coming up with new routines and planning out your teaching schedules. You were supposed to do this until 8pm…just 3 more hours Y/N, you can do this…
“Hey, B.I. and I are going to grab some dinner here in a minute, if you’re hungry?”
It would seem Bobby had a knack for startling you when you were deep in thought. You jumped slightly at the sound of his voice interrupting your thought process and he drew a couple steps back from his place by the open door with a bashful grin that touched his eyes.
You wanted to accept Bobby’s invitation, but you had work to do and your plans for later had already included dinner, so you had to politely decline. “Oh thank you so much for offering, but Jiyong and I had already planned to grab take-out once he was done working.”
You thought for a moment that you noticed Bobby’s eyes grow sad at the mention of Jiyong, but if they had he quickly switched back to his cheerful grin.
“Sweet, no worries Y/N, Y’all have a good night!”
You returned the sentiment with a bow and once the door to the studio shut, you came back to your deep thoughts. You decided there would be no bullshitting tonight. Once you were both home, you would bring up that you needed to talk and just go from there based on what felt right.
If Jiyong doesn’t even have anything to say for himself at the mention of your unhappiness, then why bother preparing a speech…
**They say love is blind, oh baby you’re so blind** Hearing your phone go off with Jiyong’s lyrics at that hour caught you off guard as you fumbled through your bag to reach it.
J: Hey baby, I’m done! Shall we start our dinner plans early? I’m starving.
Shit
Well, it was now or never. You returned a confirmation text to Jiyong and proceeded to pack up your bag and exit the studio. You were still unsure how you felt about everything but were more overwhelmed with the fact that you were seeing him before 11pm for the first time in nearly a month.
“I just don’t know what you want from me. I’m busy a lot. You’ve been used to my schedule since we first started dating. It’s been years. Where is this dissatisfaction coming from?”
Dinner had ended and the amount of uncomfortable silences couldn’t go unaddressed any further. You had just gotten as far as telling Jiyong that you were unhappy with how far away he has felt recently, and he was already on the defense. He was defensive and had his famous pokerface on.
“That’s just it, Jiyong. This is nothing new. I have been unhappy for a while now and you just don’t show that you care. We hardly ever talk anymore and when we do, it feels so forced as if you don’t even want to talk to me. You go to bed with me and that’s it. We used to show each other so much love every single day and were convinced that we’d never get out of the ‘honeymoon phase.’ Well here we are. But it’s far worse than that. It feels like we’ve completely gotten out of ‘us’…” Your last words caused Jiyong’s pokerface to fall into obvious confusion and a little bit of something else; hurt. Your words were starting to ring true to him and the truth was cutting deep.
“You may be content with this but I am not at all, and have been trying to show you that all month. You feel a million miles away and I can’t explain to you how much that hurts. It feels like I’ve already lost you and there is absolutely nothing I can do to change it.” Tears had started to drop from your eyes as you let out a groan of frustration and violently ran your fingers through your hair.
Jiyong remained staring at you, speechless, with the same hurt and confused expression.
“And if you have nothing to say to keep me here or keep our relationship together, then there is no reason for me to be here any longer. I cannot do this anymore Jiyong.” He started shaking his head vigorously and reached his hands out to you, desperately, as he removed himself from his position on the couch. There were evident tears in his eyes and yet, he still couldn’t find the words.
“Please…please stay.” He uttered with a shaking voice.
“Why should I? I need you to give me more than that Jiyong. I need to know you still love me and that you still want the same things with me that we have talked about for years. I need to know I’m still your one and only…”
All he did was cry. Jiyong’s face fell into his hands as he burst into tears. “You can’t go, Y/N…I need you here,” he managed in between sobs.
You looked on, tears flowing as you observed the man you love, a bawling mess. Despite the feeling pulling at you to drop to your knees and hold him and tell him everything will be ok, you shook your head and said what needed to be said.
“No. No you don’t. You have made that very clear and I am sick of feeling worthless. Goodbye, Jiyong.”
You turned and grabbed your bag as you walked towards the door, ignoring his desperate pleading for you to stay and sort things out with him. But how could you sort things out anymore after how he reacted to the news of you being unhappy?
Why had it been news to him? Did he truly not pay that much attention to you…?”
Your heart was breaking into smaller and smaller pieces, with every step you took away from his apartment. The place you would no longer call home. You fought off each and every urge to turn around and run back through those doors. But your mother raised you better than that; to put the needs of others before yourself, but to never ever forget about your own happiness at the end of the day. “If someone makes you question your worth to them, then you need to follow your own path and remind yourself just how much better this world is with you in it.” After your first love proved to be a manipulative and abusive asshole, your mother said these words to you as often as she could.
But Jiyong was completely different from him. You loved him with every fiber of your being and couldn’t bear the thought of living a day away from him. But that all was about to change. You didn’t know how, but you were going to be ok without him. You needed it. You needed to find your happiness and worth again.
