Welcome Back to Trench
When our kids introduced us to the world of the twenty one pilots fandom a couple of years ago, we were initially full of corny parent jokes:
Why are they called twenty one pilots when there are only two of them?
That's way too many pilots.
They're gonna need a bigger cockpit.
Why, for the love of God, don't they capitalize their name!?
That's not to say we don't still say those things sometimes (thank goodness our teens generally find us amusing), but it's also wild to see how big a part of our family dynamic this duo has become over these couple of years...so much so that I've even suggested that when we finally get a dog, he should be named Clancy. [T.O.P. fans will understand.] They are in regular rotation in our home and in our cars. Last year, they were one of my top 5 most listened to artists on Spotify! And last night, at last, we all went to see them perform live on the aptly-named Clancy Tour. It was the first time seeing them for all 5 of us - our family of 4, along with my 16yo's...um, favorite boy, we'll call him. I don't think she's been quite this happy since maybe when we first surprised her with AJR tickets. But as much as she loves AJR (we all do now!), twenty one pilots is HER band as Living Colour is mine, and Genesis is her dad's. Now we are all along for the ride.
And last night, much of Orlando was also along for that ride, having sold out the Kia Center pretty much immediately when the tickets went on sale months ago. I had a feeling their show would be high energy and that the crowd would be super hyped, and I was not wrong about that. But after being as impressed as I was by AJR (twice!) this year, I wasn't 100% sure what to expect. Tyler and Josh did not disappoint, though, and I have to say I am also quite impressed with THEM...not that I didn't think I would be. We've watched enough of their music videos and live performance clips (full concerts, even) on YouTube for me to know this, too, wasn't going to be just an ordinary concert.
To the point, Tyler and Josh have a way of immersing themselves into the crowd (literally) that makes them feel like they are right there with you - because they are - spending quite a bit of time out amongst their fans instead of on the stage. They are seemingly everywhere at once, making it feel like an intimate performance even with thousands of people in the audience. And the fire. There was a lot of fire, which I rather appreciated because, being prone to being cold, I was chilly in the arena, and it was nice to sometimes be able to feel a bit of warmth from the flames, all the way up our cushy club level seats!
We heard so many favorite songs of theirs last night, including my newest favorite from them, the super catchy "Lavish," but I have not stopped playfully pouting yet that they didn't do my O.G. favorite of theirs - the one that really stuck out to me when I first heard them, and that is "Lane Boy." I love that one so much that I have a bit of a reputation for it at this point. With a catalog as extensive as theirs is, they can't be expected to play everything, but man, hearing that one live would've made the night absolutely, undeniably perfect for me. Here's hoping they'll add it back in on a future tour.
Also on the subject of their music, I couldn't help but giggle thinking that Tyler doesn't really even need to know his own lyrics because that arena full of fans was more than happy to sing every line for him. From the first notes of every song, they were READY. If anyone knows the assignment, it's T.O.P. fans. Apparently, my kids aren't the only ones who can recite their songs like the Pledge of Allegiance. This is a thing I know now.
And finally, a huge thank you to Tyler for actually telling those of us in reserved seats to sit and rest for a few songs. Not to be the old lady in the room, but I'm long past the age of wanting to stand for an entire show, in most cases preferring to sit and truly hear the music and watch what is happening on the stage - or in this case (also) in the middle of the crowd somewhere. It was a bit of a reprieve when he said that.
Eh, so maybe I'll let that "Lane Boy" thing slide after all.

hello my good friend mx surge! what kind of music do you like/prefer, genre-wise? got any favorite songs? and then can i get some favorite lyrics? smile! and. tell me what characters/stuff the lyrics make you think of if you'd like to go that far! doesn't have to be any characters I'd know about or even any at all. i am Curious <- all /nf! do as much as you like. i love asking questions and hearing your thoughts 🫡🫡 —marley
hello my wonderful friend marley! eeee I love talking about music. this is gonna be a long one
(disclaimer: I am admittedly Very Bad at genres, so I'm gonna give you artists and maybe you can decide for yourself what genres they are)
AJR is a big one, I could talk for days about AJR. they're one of the only bands I've been to a concert for (very very good concert, very fun, very dramatic, highly recommend, they are clearly showmen, not just musicians, and that makes for entertaining shows). I'm unironically following someone on tumblr who posts ONLY AJR stuff because every time I see the name "AJR" it's like a visceral reaction that makes me grin. ooh, also Twenty One Pilots. I love then. looking forward to their new album
I listen to a lot of broadway. some of my favorites are Be More Chill, Mean Girls, Six, and Titanic the Musical, just to name a few. I love seeing live shows especially- I saw Something Rotten not too long ago, and the Nick was BRILLIANT it. was, admittedly, a high school production, but nonetheless. he danced a lot, even unchoreographed dancing in the background, just like, vibing, and it was so obvious that he was just having a good time and enjoyed being there (the actor, that is, not the character) and I just liked watching him
oh, and Sleeping at Last! I first discovered them by their Atlas: Enneagram album, because I'm a nerd and adore personality tests (I'm an INTP and a 5 in case anyone was wondering), but I've been slowly absorbing the rest of their music, and it's all so beautiful
favorite songs... hm. I can't not say "2085," the closer to AJR's most recent album, and perhaps the most emotionally devastating song they have released as of yet (which is really saying something). best lyrics from that song are undoubtedly the last bit, where they say "you gotta get better, you've all that I got," then it gets softer and the lyrics change to "I gotta get better, I'm all that I've got." HEARTBREAKING /pos. I mean, I like that part enough that I wrote a whole fic inspired by it. one of my very few angst fics. "All That I've Got," a Minnesconsin fic (link here if you're curious). by the way, the first song of that album, "Maybe Man," is also a banger, highly recommend
I love "96000" from "In the Heights" (I think it's only in the movie version, not the musical version? not 100% sure though). ooh this song makes me crazy. this song... ok. I can't talk about this song without being a bit weird about it, but stick with me. this song always makes me think of the people on the Titanic. I read a book once with fictionalized versions of a few of the Titanic's officers and crew members, and once I was listening to this song and when it got to Sonny's verse, all I could think about was how exactly it matched fifth officer Harold Lowe's vibes. it's not really the lyrics, but several of the verses just remind me of various crew members' vibes. and it's. it's just a great song
"Air Catcher" by TOP. that's another wonderful song. always makes me think of Iowa to Wisconsin, for no particular reason. best lyric is "I don't believe in talking just to breathe," which is an idea that always appealed to me
Tyler Joseph is a BRILLIANT lyricist, actually. other great lyrics by him:
"our words are loud but now I'm talking action" (Neon Gravestones)
"for us to think is to be alive / and I will try with every rhyme / to come across like I am dying / to let you know you need to try to think" (Car Radio)
"death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit" (Heavydirtysoul)
"haunted by a couple big mistakes / she covers all the dents with the way she decorates" (Redecorate)
"like an "I love you" / that isn't words / like a song he wrote that's never heard" (Shy Away)
I love "despair" by leo. always makes me think of florida talking to loui (in a queerplatonic way, of course). another great floui song is "Tightrope" from The Greatest Showman, but I picture this one as loui to florida
holy moly this is even longer than expected. I'll leave you with this for now. you've probably gotten a good grasp of my taste by now haha. thank you sm for the ask, I had a delightful time answering :D

Now it's a song that shows me I knew. I knew before I knew.

1, 7, 17!
1 - catchiest song
I found this in the summer and it SKYROCKETED up my list to end up at 23! so I think it's the catchiest in my book! its a banger
7 - most streamed month of your top artist (explain if you think/know why)
I know exactly why and it's because of a blorbo song. like 100% the reason they skyrocketed in January was because we were getting new eps of his show in February and I got excited LOL
17 - saddest song
I was between two songs for this one but this one reeeeeeally connected with me personally for this one particular line because it was almost word-for-word (just different gender of parent) the same reaction I had upon getting some news this year
but my personal connection to it aside, the ending of this song is absolutely heartbreaking with the context of what it was written about

ok ur turn. top 5 ajr songs (do not feel the need to give big long explanations like i did lol im just insane. unless u’d like to be equally insane about it)
I cannot do this. I now see the error of my ways of asking you to do this ranking, cause it is just pure torture😆
Started to relisten to their first album cause it's the one that's least clear in my mind and... I already want all of them in my ranking and I know I like the Click, Neotheater and OK Orchestra even more... take pity on me😭
Let’s start with Pitchfork Kids! Absolute classic, absolute banger, delightfully weird in the way that reminds me why I love AJR. The song of their first album that stayed the longest on my playlist and the one that I always get back to being obsessed with whenever I listen to it. I don’t know what it is about this song. I don’t even think it’s one of their most relatable songs, probably not even one of their weirdest songs, it’s just... soooooo good tho. Legit one of THE AJR songs of all time. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. They’ll never be able to produce a song that hits the same buttons Pitchfork Kids does. No one will be able to, it just holds such a special place in my heart and my brain.
Role Models. This always hits even harder listening to it after Woody Allen like I’m doing today (no one can tell me it’s not a direct sequel to that song, this is 100% partly about Woody Allen). The disillusionment of realising your (childhood) heroes are not who you thought you were. Your heroes letting you down is suuuch an experience of growing up. They’re not just heroes, but they are actual people and honestly, some of these people suck. The struggle of taking what your heroes gave you while leaving the people behind that gave it to you. To what extent can you separate the art from the artist? How do you go on, knowing the influence this person’s art had on your life, on the person you are today and the decisions you’ve made? How do you become okay with you having been shaped by something made by a person you so fundamentally disagree with? How do you keep that part alive while killing the part that is attached to that person? (I’m trying really hard not to write an essay but it’s not turning out so well)
3 O’Clock Things. Look. This song is ace. I don’t make the rules.
Way Less Sad. I haven’t seen a single person yet who didn’t think this song was super optimistic, but also kind of thought that was weird of themselves to think. It’s an “This is not happy, so it can’t be the ending” optimism. I don’t know if we’re just all not okay, or if it’s not actually all that weird to think it’s an optimistic song, but this song came out in February 2021. That’s what we were in. Stuff sucked. It still does. But we are, in fact, not dead yet, and I personally think it’s very sexy of us to hold on to hope. We’re not done yet. Things will get better. They just will. It feels a little like spite, and I’m okay with that. This song makes me want to go out and change my life for the better
Birthday Party. There’s always been some social commentary in their music, and while this isn’t even the most obvious one (looking at you 3 O’Clock Things), it’s just so delightfully ironic about it. Look, Role Models doesn’t hit for no reason. This song always felt like a promise to me. We won’t be them. I remember seeing a post on Instagram around the time about how people were apparently complaining that they shouldn’t get political in their songs and I always thought “who the hell did you think you were listening to?” AJR’s songs have always been about growing up, and while there is the things about how to navigate relationships with other people, looking at the state of the world and building opinions on it has always been part of growing up too. This song is about the innocence of a child who will find out about all the horrible things going on in the world at some point, and I, for one, find that incredibly relatable.
Okay, this got away from me XD
I think I could write an essay about each of their songs, and my top 5 ranking could change at any point. I also wanted to put Weak, Netflix Trip, Call my Dad and Burn the House Down on the list, but I can’t do 9 instead of 5😂 at some point it’s just too much😂
Was this insane enough for you?😂
Drop sth in my ask box if you also want me to do a top 5 ranking for sth
#ajr#music#ask games#seyla interacts#magic-number-3#this is getting out of hand 😂#we're becoming ajr fan blogs😂#thank you so much for this💕#and sorry it took me so long haha#seyla talks

still thinking about that tiktok that was saying a lot of artist's top songs are like the hits on the radio that aren't indicative of their discography as a whole. which is true, a lot of the top songs do tend to be the pop hits, you know? but this makes me think of AJR. I think Bang! might be one of if not their top song (I don't think I Won't or The DJ Is Crying For Help have overshadowed it yet) but I think it's pretty indicative of their discography. I mean even just in OK Orchestra they've got a considerable number of like upbeat pop-esque songs like Bang!, Way Less Sad, World's Smallest Violin, Bummerland, I think OK Overture counts? and then in Neotheater and The Click they have other songs that I think have similar vibes to Bang!. also I just like really upbeat sounding songs like Bang! and Way Less Sad etc., they're some of my favourite AJR songs. notable shoutout is All My Favourite Songs by Weezer ft. AJR, that collab SLAPS. I know there's at least one Weezer fan that won't kill me for this take <3 I l-word you <3

#2, 7, 9, 16, and 17 for the Spotify wrapped ask game!
A song you didn't expect to see in your top 10
Wings by Halfy & Winks! I listened to this a ton last year, but I really didn’t think I’d listened that much this year? Like. I’m genuinely really confused lol.
Most streamed month of your top artist (explain if you think/know why)
Lovejoy with the month of June! :D
It was probably because of a road trip I went on! I listened to music for the entire car ride XD
Favourite lyrics of your #1 song
Call Me What You Like by Lovejoyyyyy (contains swearing)
How about these ones:
Though a big reason I like them is because of the way they’re sung; I think it’s really pretty :)
A song everyone should know
A LOT, BUT IF I HAD TO NAME ONE
Stationary Cycle by Theodore Shapiro!!! It’s sooooooo beautiful and from an amazingly good movie :D
Saddest song
AGAIN, A LOT LOL
But probably My Play by AJR (contains swearing). It’s just… an awful song, in terms of emotions. Especially when you know the story behind it :( AND THE EMOTION IN THE SINGER’S VOICE AAAAAAAA
The music video in particular made my heart drop, especially at the very end :((

Comfort foods: I love a good udon or age tofu at any time of day, but I always aaalllwaaayyys go for some form of chocolate when I'm feeling down. I'm a big foodie, though, so also on the roulette of Make Yuu Comfy is a good, and I mean good. Burger.
Do you collect anything: Okay, so when I was a kid, I collected porcelain dolls and Tinkerbell snowglobes (A thing I weirdly had a good number of), but had to pack both away when I moved in with my fiansband. Nowadays, MTG or YGO cards are kiiiind of the closest thing I got. I'd like to have a cool collection of like, rocks or fan-merch, but money is money and I've got about 35 years until retirement, sooooo....
Favourite drink: Tea. I drink so much tea. You don't even know how much- my mother. Got me a 1700 miligram loose leaf electric tea kettle for Christmas last year, and I have been brewing anywhere between one to three pots a daaayyy. I will have a kidney problem. I don't care. I've got a nice stash of loose leaf tea - I'm not even saying this just cuz Pal replied, I just - honest to god have so much tea. Yet I keep losing tea cuz I keep brewing large pots of it. I have a SipsBy susbscription.
Currently, I gotta give it up for the Buckland Tea Blend in particular, it's such a stunning Earl Grey, the bergamot flavor balances pretty perfectly with the raspberries and lemon peel and lavender, it's just. Honest to God, top-tier tea.
I would also be remiss to not plug Pleasures of Tea, of which I know and am pretty chummy with the owner of. I have her house blends, I learned all my looseleaf tea stuff from her, and every time I'm in the area, I stockpile whatever I can get my hands on, like my Golden Monkey black or Yunan golden curls, she has a stellar peach oolong, tung ting - I love all her teas, honest to god. Just.
Oh, and this Dark Pearl oolong from Cleveland tea lab? To die for.
Favourite music artists: MCR defined my life as a child - I wrote a whole Vampire fic titled after one of their songs, and wrote a terrible songfic with another - both of which could be released should I screw up a Frenzy - but I'm one of those people that listens to a few songs and says I like the artist. I like a handful of DemonDice/AJR/Saint Motel/Calliope Mori songs, for example, but I don't listen to everything or seek new ones out. New ones just kinda happen to me, y'know?
Current favourite songs: I have literally named my hanahaki fic after the last full line of Ijimekko (Bully) by Calliope Mori, so that's been on repeat. And, like I said, I haaaaave been listening to Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier by Corb Lund because my Zorc-writing brain is weird and I made a post about my Zorc song choices. The other two songs circling my brain like a whirlpool are Hell's Coming With Me thanks to that tkb vine being so kickass and World's Smallest Violin because AJR can do a catchy tune, goddamnit, but kids can ya lighten up a little???
But also also? Both the Brittle Bones Nicky songs because big TKb feels, bruv.
Favourite fics: I'm gunna assume you don't mean of my own creation, which means Different Form Different Time and Body Life are out of the running.
I've said, I've said, I will contionue to say forever, love makes monsters of us all, heed the tags, it's such a perfect perfect show of Yami Bakura's care for his host, even if we never get it from his POV, it's absolutely fascinating and tasty and pulpy.
This... is an Owl House fanfic, but I found it doing a Review exchange on the fanfic subreddit, Live To Serve and, honest to God, every fic this person writes is fluff gold I was such a sucker for how cute this is! It's so simple but so good!
Oh! Oh! Help yourself to seconds (and thirds), there is not enough Chat/shipping (slashed so this isn't in the tag, but it's Yusaku and Shima) and it's just - so sweet. So cute. "I'm a bi king", you fuckin are, Naoki, you funky dude, i love ya. Pain Shared, same thing, love that Chat, love those boys, they're perfect together and they're gunna live in a modest home in Den City suburbs and raise some robots together.
Yada yada Last Puzzle yada yada Sugar, yada yada something written by firetrap, I got all those tender classics under my belt.
Ah, but to make this wrapped up, also gunna push Ateb' Men Alezl, Keep The Light Shining, and my husbands very very cute Murderbot fanfic a moment of respite. it's adorable. It's perfect. I couldn't ask for cuter Murderbot and ART togetherness.
Tagging: ....isn't working right now. For some reason.

many thanks to my friend @vetulicolia for having the consideration to tag me in this. i intuit that this game has the basal concept of something akin to, ah… "list 6 songs that are important to you" - or perhaps 6 songs that you have just been listening to, recently, regardless of importance. i figure that i will do a mishmash of both, and see what comes of it.
pilotredsun - vitamin kid (pilotredsun, pilotredsun, pilotredsun… pilotredsun is immensely important to me as an artist and a musician, but i would hardly call them a favorite - in the sense that one often wouldn't call fine wine their favorite drink. perhaps i see pilotredsun's work as something adjacent to music, but different enough to warrant distinction in its own right. Vitamin Kid, in specific, is…hm. i have listened to a lot of pilotredsun's discography, and while vitamin kid is perhaps not my strict favorite, it is quite important to me, as it was one of the first pilotredsun songs i ever heard, and is still immensely endearing to me in a nostalgic sort of way. relatively early pilotredsun is always a treat to look back on, the collected soundcloud works.)
They Might Be Giants - Stand On Your Own Head (i recently discovered a love for this this due to the recommendation of someone i know, and i am immensely grateful. i had listened to it in the past, passingly, but had never really sat down to give it a thorough review before, and i've found a love for it. it's definitely not my favorite off of Lincoln, but it is nonetheless a track i have recently been obsessed with - "i love the world, and if i have to sue for custody, i will sue for custody!")
casio dad - i'm ok with you (im unsure how to properly describe my feelings on casio dad - and, believe me, i have tried before. but my loquaciousness turns to mush under the benevolent gaze of classic j - the artist behind casio dad and the current…co-owner, i believe? of the band 'glass beach'. i like casio dad very much. it is possibly my favorite 'band' of all time. i think it sounds very good. if you listened to casio dad, that would make me happy.)
Seth Boyer - The Cremation of Sam McGee (this track is one that i…initially viewed my interest in as ephemeral, passing, a temporary obsession i would - despite my very sincere appreciation for it - eventually chew up and discard. however, as time passes, it has become gradually obvious, with increasing clarity, that it is turning into a personal favorite of mine. The Cremation of Sam McGee is, as a poem, among my favorites already - and this work translates it into a song with beautiful, beautiful execution, the vocals and backing banjo always stuck in the back of my head in some capacity. a nebulous dream i have is to, one day, do my own cover of this song with sufficient quality.)
Feed Me Jack - Jelly the Queen (feed me jack is a band i view with a degree of heavy nostalgia and melancholy. it was…mmm. i would be willing to say that my discovery of it served as an entry point, a gateway, to my modern taste in music - it got me hooked on math rock, for awhile! and i still do like math rock, but, wew….you shoulda seen me in 2017/2018. despite very probably being in my top favorite bands out there, it met an unceremonious end when they broke up…i believe in 2017? a deep sigh. that occasion is something i view as an immense tragedy, a lost opportunity. )
AJR - World's Smallest Violin (i am, quite (un)fortunately so, of an indie pop penchant. they have crucified me for this in the past, and i suspect they will do so again. i discovered this song a fair bit ago due to a friend of mine occasionally sending it, and it has endeared itself to me heavily - if only for the sound, the idiom of the song, rather than its messaging, which i find myself somewhat apathetic to. it is very overtly meant for those who have some level of disconnect between the acts of them and their ancestors, who ogle and gaze up at the illustrious portraits of patriarchs long-gone on their fireplace and think to themselves, "their deeds were strong, and mine are weak". well, i don't really feel that compulsion, both in the sense of feeling a detachment, and finding their actions to be immensely brave in comparison - i knew them personally, if only for a short while, and they were unhappy and deeply lonely people up until their death, even if their titles of judge or lawyer or business owner could make one think differently for a moment. i, to some extent, inherited their struggles. the song has the lyric "someone somewhere has it worse" - and, though i do not say this with self-deprecation or out of the urge of masturbatory sadness, within the purview of this songs' goal, i am that someone, somewhere, that has it worse. one could perhaps tie this to my previous post. anyway i'm using this as a space for my garrulous personal rumination again & just end it off with my saying that i think it's a good song.)
and i suppose that's that. who to tag…let me think. er…. @mdq, @icetrancer, and i figure that you might get a kick out of this, @liziveth. on top of that, i invite anyone who sees this and wants to do it, regardless of them necessarily being tagged. it's good fun. bows and exits the stage.

We Gon' Burn The Whole House Down
words: 1.4k
[Notes: ahhhh it's finally completed! this was actually a prompt I started first, forgot about it, lost motivation, and eventually came back too heh. I am proud of this one though]
Also: I would recommend listening to this song while reading this since it's what the story, as well as the title, is based on. For mobile users, or if the link isn't working, listen to Burn the House Down by AJR thanks!
*This Story Contains Spoilers For Unlocked*
“Keefe was right, you really haven’t decorated your room much.” Sophie glanced up from where she was rubbing Iggy's belly, the small (now blue and green) fluffball letting out a whine of dissatisfaction at her retreating fingers. “I guess I’ve just never had much time to decorate,” she sighed. Tam shrugged,” I guess I can’t complain, my room at Teirgans isn’t that decorated either.” He stared at the papers framed around the room, Keefe had gotten into the habit of giving his friends old pages from his sketchbooks, insisting that they were useless to him in his quest to find memories about his mom. His gaze lingered on a drawing of Luna and Silveny, curled up in the grass together. The mama alicorns head rested on top of her baby’s, both of their eyes closed as they dozed. Currently, the two alicorns were playing in the pastures with his sister. He was sure Wynn and Greyfell were there too.
Faint chatter echoed downstairs. The collective had gathered in Havenfield for another meeting. They've been having a lot of them lately.
Ever since Keefe left.
Sophie cleared her throat, looking away from the pictures. Her body felt heavy.
Tam seemed to notice her discomfort, and he turned to her, his eyes softening, “I’m sure he's alright.” He murmured.
Sophie resumed her scratching, Iggy's grumbling purrs filling the room, “I hope so.” she whispered.
The silence stretched on for a moment before Tam cleared his throat,“ This is a bit awkward isn't it?” he asked.
Sophie looked up, “What do you mean?”
Tam huffed slightly, and Sophie noticed how he shifted in the same spot, so she patted the bed. He hesitated for a moment before sitting down.
“I mean, I know we’re friends, but….” He trailed off.
Sophie understood, “I guess I haven’t been the best at including you and Linh huh?” she said.
It felt weird, she knew Tam, and she knew they both considered each other friends but, they barely talked to each other outside of Blackswan stuff, or when all of them were hanging out together.
Tam was only up here because he asked to see Keefe's artwork.
Tam nodded, “It’s partially my fault,” he grimaced, “If I hadn't joined with the Neverse-”
“Don’t say that.” Sophie said firmly, her eyes meeting his, “We all know it wasn’t your fault.”
Sophie knew he didn’t believe her. His eyes betrayed him. Unfortunately, she knew that guilt all too well.
The silence was back, and thicker than it was before.
“Have you ever listened to music?” Sophie found herself blurting. Her face ran hot, wishing she could take the words back. Of course, he could you idiot, her mind reprimanded, his family literally does that for a living.
Tam opened his mouth.
“Human music,” Sophie added quickly.
Tams mouth closed, “No, I haven't.”
“Do you want to?” Sophie offered.
Tam cocked his head, his eyes skittered around the room, “How?” he asked dumbly.
Sophie sat up, walking over to her dresser. She crouched down, reaching into the bottom drawer. It's not like it was illegal to have human items, In fact, the collective and Councilor Terik knew she had kept some human things with her when she came to the Lost Cities, but you could never be too sure.
She withdrew, holding her iPod and some earphones, “With these.”
Tam blinked as she walked back over, sitting down and plugging the earphones into the jack. He stared at the iPod curiously as Sophie turned it on.
“It’s human obviously,” Sophie explained, tapping the screen and opening her music. She smiled softly, it had been so long since she had listened to any of her songs.
“Are they human artists?” Tam asked, peering over her shoulder to look at the screen.
Sophie nodded, “A lot of human music is stored in this app so that people can listen to it from anywhere.”
Tam's eyes flashed with understanding, and Sophie handed him an earbud. He stared at it.
Sophie giggled slightly, pointing to her ear, “In here.”
The tips of his ears turned slightly red, and he looked down, “Right.” he mumbled sheepishly, placing the earbud in his ear slowly.
Sophie scrolled to her most recent playlist (recent meaning a couple of years Ago) and clicked on her most recent play.
She had only found this band when she was bored and homesick, scrolling through her recommended.
The song started almost immediately, and Tam’s brow furrowed, trying to understand the language.
Used to keep it cool
Used to be a fool
All about the bounce in my step
“It's in a human language,” Sophie explained.
Watch it on the news
Whatcha gonna do?
I could hit refresh and forget
Trumpets started in the background, following the beat of the song, and Tam relaxed slightly, “That kinda sounds like one of the instruments my mother uses.”
Granted, Sophie could understand the lyrics just fine, but she knew Tam couldn't. Even so, he seemed to like the beat as the song progressed, and she smiled lightly when she saw his head bobbing along with the music.
She noticed the song fading slightly, and her mood lightened, she had always been a fan of beat drops in songs, especially these ones.
…..Is that right?
The trumpets sang faster as the tempo picked up, and Tam's eyebrows raised slightly.
Lose
My
Mind
The beat dropped, and Tam's mouth gaped slightly. Sophie laughed softly at his expression. She had to admit when she had first listened to it, she had a pretty similar reaction. There was something about the distant drums and the background bass that really tied the whole song together.
We gon' burn the whole house down
Tam smiled, glancing up at Sophie, “What are they saying?” He asked, and Sophie noticed his foot tapping her carpet to the rhythm as well.
Sophie quoted the lyrics as they faded out, “We gon' burn the whole house down.”
Tam snickered, “Are humans a bunch of arsonists or something?”
Sophie laughed, “Some maybe, but these lyrics have a different meaning I think.”
Tam glanced down at the iPod, which was flashing lyrics, but not in a language he could understand.
Sophie was no singer, but she did want Tam to understand the song, so without meaning too, she began to quote the song as it continued.
“…Gawking at the tricks up your sleeve,” She said it quietly, and Tam looked up
“Are those the lyrics?” He asked.
Sophie nodded, continuing, “Too good to be true, But I'm in a room, Full of entertainers and thieves, Used to let it go.”
The trumpets picked up again, and Tam must have realized that the beat was about to drop again because he followed Sophie’s words slowly.
“Woah no,” Sophie smiled, moving her head in time with the lyrics as Tam copied her.
The two had turned to face each other, with Tam slowly mouthing the lyrics (A little bit off time-wise, but Sophie didn't blame him) And Sophie nodding along.
“Way up way up we go, been up and down that road, way up way up oh no,-” Sophie started.
“We gon' burn the whole house down.” A large grin broke out on Tam’s face, and Sophie found herself smiling with him. She had never heard him sing before, and it sounded nice. His voice was smooth and drifted slowly, almost like he was whispering the words instead of singing them.
They finished the song like that, with Tam slowly learning the repeating lyrics and timing and Sophie helping him out occasionally.
The song finished loudly, with the beat dropping one last time as the riff slowly faded out.
The grin stayed on Tam's face as he glanced back at the iPod.
“That was…nice.” He murmured, and Sophie gazed at him.
“I listen to human music sometimes, when I want to remember my old home.” Sophie said, looking down at the iPod, “Dex fixed it up so it's powered by sunlight too,”
Tam nodded, and he glanced back up, looking sheepish, “Are there maybe..more songs by them?”
“AJR?” Sophie questioned.
“Is that what they're called?” Tam asked, then nodded quickly, “Yeah, them.”
Sophie smiled, clicking right below the song and opening up the band's full list, her eyes widened slightly, “There are more since I last listened to them.” She said.
“How many?” Tam asked, leaning over.
“About 60.” She murmured.
Tam shrugged, and then he smirked, “Can we listen to all of them?”
Sophie smiled back, laughing slightly, “Sure.”
