man, I would love to say something nice and heartfelt about the Rebels ten year anniversary, but the ending of the show screwed me up so badly that it permanently destroyed my relationship with Star Wars and fucked up my entire interaction with fandom as a whole, so like, I love the show, but I simply cannot. may I recommend having a normal relationship with your fandom because this sucks. it's been years and I frankly would love to not be dealing with this anymore but as you know. alas. brains.
#that's not even counting my emotionally abusive ex-bff whom I met through rebels#and whom I still have panic attacks about seven years later#I bitch about wake/gambit a lot and that DID fuck me up but that was from the fandom#rebels was from the canon#it's not healthy! I know it's not healthy!#so so so much of my marvel experience revolves around NOT accidentally replicating my sw experience#however badly you think I reacted I assure you I reacted worse#no. worse than that#I know I have a number of friends who got back into sw recently and I'm very happy for you#but I still black out with rage on certain things (including literally anything related to That Show) so like. can't relate.#do not forgive and do not forget etc#I would LOVE to forget if not to forgive#can't#your girl#bedlam watches rebels

Hello firstly I’d just like to say off of your recent fic angry loops is sexy loops and also if you feel up to it would you be willing to write a fic of loops loosing his temper on the ice like fully dropping his gloves and fighting I know you’ve done a couple before where he’s been defending James and the one with greyback but I think it’d be cool to see him loose his head because of what’s been done directly to him and not his team mates? Also I hope you’re taking care of yourself!
Yes, I love this prompt! It’s not a knock-down-drag-out fight, but I hope you enjoy it anyway ❤️ SW credit goes to @lumosinlove!
TW for homophobia, mentioned slur (not explicit), mild violence
They were still muttering behind him, laughing about some inside joke that was almost certainly at his expense. Just keep swimming, he thought as the refs reviewed a call.
“—not about to pussy out,” one of the guys snorted. “What, you think I can’t beat him?”
Remus ground his teeth.
Not two seconds later, something prodded the back of his shoulder. He ignored it. Not worth the penalty. A second poke nearly made him veer off course.
“Can I help you?” Remus asked as he finally turned. His annoyance bled into every word, but the two idiots only grinned. They were enforcers; big guys like Kuny, except without the kindness or intelligence in their eyes.
“How much did you have to pay to get your spot on this team?” one of them taunted, cocking an eyebrow. “Oh, sorry. How much did your boyfriend have to pay?”
“Less than your dad paid me last night,” he deadpanned. The refs would be done soon, and then he could find an excuse to drop the gloves. Deep breaths, his dad would say.
His mother would tell him to knock ‘em dead.
“Hey.” The next push was even harder; the bigger man’s voice was angry, now. Remus smiled to himself. “Look at me when I’m talking to you.”
“Who are you, my mother?” he snorted, though he turned again. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Finn nudge Talker with his elbow.
“I bet she’s real proud of you for sleeping your way to the top.”
“She is, actually.”
A gleam lit in his watery blue eyes, as if he had won something. “So you admit it?”
“What, that my mom’s proud of me and you’re an asshole? It’s not like it’s a secret.”
The shorter man—who had a good three inches on Remus but wasn’t nearly as fast—sneered. “My friend here bet me ten bucks you’d fight.”
“Ten bucks?” Remus widened his eyes. “Wow! You could buy yourself an ice cream with that! Good for you, buddy!”
Mauve colored his cheeks and tree-trunk neck as he skated right into Remus’ personal space. “I’m willing to lose that bet if it means knocking that smug look off your face,” he snarled.
Remus rolled his eyes and started heading back to his team. The review was clearly almost done. It was time to get his head off the schoolyard and into the game. “In your dreams, asshole.”
“Run along back home, you—“
The slur hung in the air like a swarm of bees. Remus stopped cold. Everyone within earshot went still.
Remus sighed, and slowly turned to face them again. “I really wish you didn’t just say that.”
A vicious glimmer crossed the shorter man’s beady eyes. “And what—“
The sickening snap of his nose beneath Remus’ knuckles and the ensuing shriek harmonized beautifully with the pulse pounding in his ears. Blood dripped through thick fingers. “Call me that again,” Remus said calmly, skating toward him despite the anger snarling inside his chest. “Do it.”
The taller man stepped in front of him. “Look, dude—“
“You wanted a fight, didn’t you?” Remus shoved him in the chest. “Ten bucks to get a rise out of the rookie? Your friend called me a slur and got exactly what he deserved for it, so either fight me like you wanted or stay the fuck out of my way.”
Talker’s hand was solid on his shoulder. “Loops—“
“What’s it gonna be?” Remus asked, making unblinking eye contact with the enforcer.
There was a pause, then a shake of the head. “You’re fuckin’ crazy, Lupin. Should’ve stayed on the bench where you belong.”
“Call me another slur and I’ll show you exactly where I belong, you second-rate coward. Now pull your head out of your ass and play the game with some dignity. Enjoy your ten bucks.”
Finn whistled lowly as he rejoined the group; Talker was still holding his shoulder, like he was afraid Remus was going to do something stupid. That was probably for the best. One of the refs raised a brow and blew his whistle. “Number six, two minutes for fighting. Number 14, five minutes for discrimination.”
“What?” The shorter enforcer spluttered around the fresh gauze in his hand. “He broke my fuckin’ nose!”
“Welcome to hockey,” the ref said drily. “Next time, read the rules about offensive language.”
“He played the gay card!”
Remus rounded on him, blood boiling. “I played the ‘get the fuck out of my face and don’t call me a slur’, you—“
“Okay,” James interrupted, skating between them with a palm on Remus’ chest. He lowered his voice, eyes softening in concern. “Two minutes is more than enough, yeah? We need you out here. You can kick his ass once you’re both out of the box.”
Remus clenched his jaw so hard his mouthguard squeaked, but he nodded and headed toward the box after a short pause. He already achieved his goal; those two minutes would be a goddamn victory lap.
Sirius’ proud smile and light shoulder check as he passed wasn’t half-bad, either.

Meeting for the First Time
Bio!Dad Bruce
So here is my first contribution to the Bio!Dad Bruce Wayne Month 2020,
Day 1: Meeting for the First Time
@biodad-bruce-month
Next
~~~~~~~~~~
Okay granted noting seemed to ever go Marinette’s way. But this was the ultimate punch in the gut the universe could send her.
It started off as a normal Friday, 8 months since the liar came back to school. 8 months since she threatened to pull everyone, she cared about from her and leave her alone. Well 6 month ago Lila’s threat came true. Today she simply walked into class and ignore the cruel stares and watched as feet would pop out to trip her. Well she made it to her desk in one piece and that was a plus.
She was pulling out her tablet and then she heard and felt something slam onto her desk. It was a binder nearly exploding with paper’s and behind it was none other than Alya. “Hey Girl” she started trying to keep her voice friendly, but the repulsion was evident in her voice. “We were wondering if you could do us a favor” she gave Marinette a strained smile and when she didn’t answer continued “Can you help me plan Lila’s sweet 16 as a way to make up for bullying her.”
Marinette was beginning to become livid, her best friend, scratch that her EX- best friend, is asking her to plan a bully’s and a Liar’s party. No, oh Kwamii No she will not be doing that. She was about to say so when Miss Bustier walked in holding several envelopes.
“Please take a seat” Miss Bustier said and that was when Mari moved the binder as far from her as possible. “Today I have the results of the genetic testing we sent a while ago.” Everyone was beginning to murmur excitedly. Mari could only shrink into her seat. She was dreading this for multiple reasons. “Marinette would you please?”
Mari stood up and walked to her teacher took the envelopes and passed them out to the designated person. She kept hers and slipped it into her bag as soon as she got back to her seat.
She knew what it would say. She knew that it would not have what her ‘friends’ would think. It would only prove as Lila would claim that she was not actually wanted and that she was bullying her because she was loved, and Mari wasn’t. Luckily, no one noticed her as they were too excited with their own results. It wasn’t until the lunch bell rang that the dreaded moment came.
“So, Mari what were your results.” Adrien asked, once upon a time she would have gushed at him talking to her but now her crush was nothing but a pile of ashes in the wind.
“I don’t know” She replied as she picked up her bag and began to head out of the class.
“Wait you didn’t look at it” Adrien practically yelled and that got the class’s attention. He was giving her a frown and couldn’t believe that she wouldn’t even look.
“Why would you not look at your result Marinette?” Lila spoke in a sickly-sweet voice. “Are you ashamed that you have someone you want to hide from the class?” everyone began to murmur and was beginning to give her skeptical glares. As if she would attack them, almost no one noticed how Kim and Nino came around to block the door.
Mari was beginning to grow frustrated that they would not let her leave and that they continued to glare at her like a criminal. She had enough. “I WAS ADOPTED!!!” that made everyone go quiet and stared at her. “I was adopted when I was a couple of moths old and I have NO intention on knowing my biological family” she turned, and Nino and Kim were shocked that she simply slipped passed them and went home.
However, she knew who her biological father was. Well that isn’t the entire truth, she found out she was adopted when she was 10 years old. Her Biological father reached out stating he didn’t know until recently that he had a child. He wanted to get to know her and be a part of her life. However, Mari was stubborn, Tom and Sabine were her parents, so she told him she didn’t want to meet. Surprise though he was stubborn as well, he gave Mari his number and to call or message him even if it were to complain about him or anything at all. This had surprised her, and she did. She texted her father with things she didn’t feel she could tell her parents.
For the past 5 years she had told him about school, or mistakes she had made, and about her passion in fashion. He always seemed to listen and just let her rant. It was good for her. When she became ladybug, she was excited to tell him about the heroes of Paris. He sometimes never answered but she saw that he read them and that was comforting.
He became someone outside of Paris who helped anchor her. He would send her gifts for her birthday and messaged her when he could, and he really did help her though most of what was going on at school. She only knew him as Father, no name attached and that was fine. That was why she didn’t want to open the letter. She didn’t want a name to the person who cares for her as Marinette.
She went to the bakery and climbed the stairs knowing that it would be quiet. Her parents were taking a trip abroad for their anniversary along with her Nonna and that left her alone. “Tikki?” the little goddess floated up to her. “Should… should I… should I look at the names?” Mari wasn’t sure if she ever wanted to know but she also knew that she possibly would like to know.
“Mari the choice is yours but know that no one not even your father will think less of you if you never want to know.” Tikki really is always sure and can always make her feel better. Mari simply nodded went to get something to eat and stared at the letter she pulled out. As she finished her lunch and washed her plate, she turned to the letter with determination she opened it and read. Her Mother was blank, meaning that she probably hasn’t put her information on any site, but does say that she is of European decent. Then she looked at her father, he had a photo, black hair, and the same bluebell eyes. He was dressed in a suit and she looked at the name, Bruce Wayne. Next to her own photo was the photo of boy with tanned skin, black hair, and emerald green eyes, the name next to it was Damian Wayne. So, she had a brother, he looked close to her age, maybe he was the reason why her father contacted her years ago. Her father was also from European decent but that was about it. She’ll look into it more after school she dropped the envelope off in her room and left to go back.
She went back to class and sat in her seat before the bell rang so she was the first person back into the classroom. She kept her head down and didn’t look up from the sketch she was working on, she heard the whispers and caught a few glances at her, but she ignored them.
“Mari?” oh Kwamii why does he have to talk now again. She looked up and his expression softened into a small smile or more like a frown. “Do you…” he rubbed his neck. At this point everyone was staring between the two completely silent. “Do you want to talk about it?”
At this she scoffed “Why?” she was confused at this they wouldn’t talk to her unless it was to yell at her so why should she be vulnerable for them.
Alix spoke up “Why do you bother asking her anyways Adrien?” she snarked throwing Mari a glare. Adrien looked sheepish, and that was when Lila struck.
“Well if she puts it out in the open, she wouldn’t bully me, since we can help her. Make her feel loved since her parents didn’t want her” she spoke calmly and sweetly, and everyone nodded and agreed.
“Tell us Mari, you can trust us girl” Alya spoke from the class.
“Now why...” Mari was cut off as Miss Bustier entered to start the class. However, not even 10 minutes into the class the door opened. A man in a suit holding a folder came into the room.
“Miss Bustier” he asked, and the teacher nodded, so he continued. “I am sorry to disturb the class, but I need to speak with Miss Dupain-Cheng”
The teacher nodded and called “Marinette” gesturing towards the door. But of course, nothing was ever simple in this class.
“Sir if you need Marinette then you should also take Lila” Alya spoke up.
The man simply looked confused, “Why would I do that?”
“Marinette is bullying Lila so if you need Mari you need Lila as well” she huffed proud of her logic.
“I am sorry, but I really only need Miss Dupain-Cheng”
“Well whatever you need to say to her you can tell all of us”
Now the man looked exasperated and he turned towards the teacher. She nodded “It is for the best whatever you need to tell Marinette you can tell the class.” She stated.
He huffed and walked up the stairs to Marinette. “I am so very sorry for your loss Miss Dupain-Cheng. If you would please come with me, you are needed to verify the bodies.” This left the class in a quiet shock. They couldn’t believe what they just heard. Mari was wide eyed filled with tears ready to fall and was numb. She didn’t hear when everyone began to speak at once demanding answers of the man. And now Mari could tell he was mad. “Really I do not need to answer your questions as this matter only pertains to Miss Dupain-Cheng, this should have been done in private, so you” he pointed at Miss Bustier “will most likely be getting a call as soon as I will report this.” This shut up the class and he helped her up and walked her out.
Identifying the bodies was a blur in her mind, she was told they died as a riot stormed the airport on their way home. She was asked if she had anywhere to go “can you please give me a moment?” she spoke weakly and the woman who was in charge of her smiled and left her in the room. Thank the Kwamii that Hawkmoth had been inactive lately, so she was able to cry and mourn. She needed to tell someone anyone, but those she loved were gone and now what was she going to do. Tikki popped her head out of the bag and patted her leg. That was when she saw her phone, she picked it up and scrolled through her contacts. She got to the name Bio! Dad and pressed the call.
It rang a few times before he picked up. “Marinette is everything okay you don’t usually call?” she started to cry, and this put worry into his voice. “Mari sweetie what’s wrong. Deep breaths with me 1 in, hold 2, out 3. Again.” He repeated this until she was no longer gasping for breath.
“Maman, Papa, and Nonna died” she couldn’t keep strong anymore “please, please don’t leave me too.”
“I won’t Mari” his voice was the softest she had ever heard from him “I’ll be on the first plane over. I won’t leave you I promise” he hung up and she was finally starting to feel lighter. The woman from before came back.
“Are you okay sweetie?” she gave her a smile.
“I think I will be?” she gave a small smile.
“That call must have helped” Mari nodded in acceptance to the statement. “Who was it?”
“My Father, he is coming for me” the woman looked at her as if she grew another head. “My biological father. My maman, papa, and nonna that died were my adoptive family.” At that the woman gave her a sympathetic smile and a hug. “they were my family but…”
“Sweetie you don’t have to always be strong its okay to be sad.” She began to cry again. She was dropped off at the bakery by Officer Raincomprix, who gave her a sad smile and then left. Mari fell asleep in her parents’ room, Tikki curled up next to her.
She woke up the next morning and opened the Bakery, allowed in the staff, and went back to the apartment. Afterwards she went back up and curled up in her parents’ bed, but a notification on her phone made her stir again.
Bio!Dad: I’m in Paris where do you want me to meet you Mari?
Mari: The Tom & Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie
Bio!Dad: I’ll be there soon I promise.
Not long after a staff member knocked on the door, she recognized the voice. “Someone is here to see you”
“Mari can I come in?” she heard Bruce and that prompted her to open the door. She didn’t care that she looked like a mess, as soon as the door opened, she hugged him and started to cry for what felt like the hundredth time in the past 24 hrs. He murmured reassurances to her and led her to the couch.
---
If anyone had told him that he was going to rush onto a plane because of the daughter he has never met in person called him crying, he would not have given you any kind of reaction. But here he is on a jet headed to Paris to meet and comfort his daughter, after her parent’s death. Yikes that is a lot to handle.
The only positive to all this is that he left discreetly enough that he wasn’t tailed by the boys. And that was a relief, if Mari had to meet him for the first time that alone was one thing but meeting Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian would probably send the child over the edge. That is considering the fact that she actually deals with and processes emotions like a human and not like a bat.
He hadn’t even finished checking into his hotel and he was restless he knew that Mari needed him and if Bruce was anything, he was overprotective of his family. And right now, one of his family was hurt and he had to do something. He texted her and she told him to go to a bakery.
Well if she said to go to a Bakery then he went to a Bakery. He stepped in and looked around before going up to the counter.
“Excuse me Miss?” he stated towards a Girl no older than Twenty behind the counter placing pastries into the case.
“Hello, how can I assist you today?” she smiled.
“I am here to speak with Marinette.”
“Ah. Your first time here right.” He nodded his head. “That girl always forgets. Follow me” he was confused but followed the young woman through the kitchen and to a small hallway and up a flight of stairs. Where she knocked on a door. There was shuffling on the other side “Someone is here to see you” she plainly stated, and footsteps were heard near the door but just shy of opening it.
“Mari can I come in?” his question was tentative but even he was surprised by the softness of his voice.
The door swung open and there she stood. Oh, she was adorable. Her black hair was in a messy bun and had blue highlights that emphasized her bluebell eyes, which were red and puffy from her crying. She fell into him into a hug and she was so small, he had to protect her from everything. The worker left and he moved the two of them to the couch.
After a couple of hours, he got the full story and to say he was pissed was an understatement. First there was the teacher and how they had handled the situation was awful, but besides that he wanted Mari safe, but he had to know what she wanted instead of making the decisions for her. He learned the hard way with his boys.
Tarot Journal Anon just sent me this! Enjoy reading it:
“Hi All! First of all, I know tarot is not for everyone and that’s fine. I would like to ask if you’re not interested, just scroll down, do not be hateful. The second thing I love to do readings for myself, for my friends and family, and sometimes on celebrities, but I definitely don’t want to be some tumblr tarot celebrity. On celebrities I usually do 5 to 10 cards reading. So let’s dive in. :)
My very recent reading was on the relationship between S and his friends. “How is S and his friends relationships nowadays?”
Possibly he considers leaving situations or relationships but the time has not come yet. He may feel trapped by those people who are in a relationship with. (8 of Cups Rx) This card also represents someone who quite never fits in, who has difficulty making and keeping commitments, who finds hard to let go and move on, even if a relationship is irretrievably broken. It also means vacations or travel can be postponed or cancelled.
Prince of Swords (Rx) This card represents someone who is not reacting inappropriately to a situation, charging into or at something when he need to step back and slow down. A person signified by the reversed PofS can be destructive or deluded, tilting at windmills. This person also blaming mistakes on others, using cruel logic. The swords cards represent people with high intelligence, logical, excellent communicators, but the sword is double edged. Includes anger, harsh judgement. I feel this means he is often blaming others and often not the right person. And this card also represents disruption of travel plans.
Even if he may feel deep inside he has to move forward and leaving some people behind, he is still generous financially or other assistance. (6 of Cups). He is involved with filantropic projects which bring sense and fairness to his life. The card refers not only to money but also to work. Suggesting good or lot of job prospects. Because six is the number of harmony and the card also represents charity projects, I think these kind of projects brings happiness to his life at the moment.
Because he has this duality in his life between struggling to leave situations but the need to help others, giving back, he losing energy, money, goodwill and has a problem finding balance in his life, setting goals, being self-disciplined (Two of Pentacles Rx).
If he wants a quality change, he needs to slow down, be patient. Just waiting and experiencing emotional life in a deeper, more transparent level (The Hanged Man) and I feel with his charity work he is on a good path which can lead to peace and understanding. This card also means he needs to let go expectations,surrender his ego, so he can discover more about a particular situations. And if this is happening he can experience radical reversals of values. What once seemed important no longer seems so and vice versa. The Hanged Man numerological counterpart is The Lady which means open to love, trust, even motherhood. ( and this card appears ones when I did a different reading on him)
In this reading I got one cups card, which generally represents relationships One court card ( Prince of SW) which I believe represents S himself and his characteristics. Two pentacles which is a materialistic symbol and a Major Arcana card ( The Hanged Man) which often considered the most important card it the deck.
So for me this 5 cards reading shows sooner or later he has to let go some of his “friends”, he has to cut out negative energy according to gain his balance again, because his life is imbalanced now. He also has to work his temper and his ego. The Hanged Man kind of a sign what he should do to become a calmer, happier person and the first step to rethink his relationship with some of his friends. After (or if) he can succeeded at in this change, he has a chance to become a fuller person in a way he wants ( relationship, family). I hope you enjoyed this reading I also have a few on him, his current ( when I did the reading) relationship with E and one on his more distant relationship with his potential gf/wife.”
so i came up with a backstory for the sw sequel trilogy that would actually make sense. its pretty long so strap in
By all accounts, Ben Solo was a normal child. Other people would give him odd looks sometimes, like they were expecting him to do something extraordinary, and though he enjoyed the attention, he didn’t understand why, not until his parents sat him down one day and told him about the Skywalker legacy. Ben was awestruck upon hearing that he was a descendant of the Chosen One, and he began to worship him, reveling in the center of attention that the Skywalker legacy afforded. It apparently didn’t matter that his grandfather had been a homicidal maniac; he was powerful, and that was what mattered. This worried Leia and Han, and when he was nine years old, they sent him to train with his Uncle Luke, who had recently opened his new Jedi Academy. He trained alongside students spanning many different ages. The youngest was Luke’s son and Ben’s cousin, a little three-year-old boy.
During Ben’s first year of training, Leia became pregnant a second time, and she gave birth to a daughter named Rey. Ben saw his new sister over holo-projections, but didn’t actually meet her until she was a year old already. He felt her strong presence in the Force as soon as he stepped into the house. When she reached out a chubby little hand and wrapped it around his finger, a wave of energy washed over him, and he realized just how much potential Rey could have as a Force-user. He probably should have felt awe, but he was flooded with jealousy, and pulled away from her. When he arrived back at the Academy, something in him had shifted. The dark fascination with his grandfather’s legacy was forming into something even more sinister.
Ben had never paid much attention to his cousin; most nine- to ten-year-olds deem themselves too cool to hang out with their three-year-old cousins. But something had changed in Luke’s son, too. He was Force-sensitive, but not in quite the same way his peers were. While they were able to feel and manipulate the Force, the Light flowed in and out of him like a fountain. He was a conduit of the Light side, more like the Force wielders on Mortis than a traditional Jedi. This caused his powers to slowly increase over time, with no known limit. Ben began to notice his cousin’s presence in the Force, growing stronger all the time. This disturbed him as Rey had. He knew that, in terms of raw power, Rey and his cousin were stronger than he could ever dream to be, and one of them would become the heir to the Skywalker legend instead of him. He could not accept this, and became jaded, developing an inferiority complex. This weakness in character allowed Snoke a way into his mind.
Snoke, an ancient, nigh immortal Sith lord, had been quietly monitoring the galaxy, waiting for his time to seize power. He kept track of potentially powerful Force users in the galaxy, which included the three Skywalker legacy children. Rey and Luke’s son were too young to corrupt, but Ben was a perfect candidate: selfish, powerful, and dissatisfied with his current circumstances. Snoke began to whisper in Ben’s ear, telling him of limitless power, of the empire they would create together. Ben was delighted by these tales, and easily fell to Snoke’s influence. He began to ignore Luke, and found a group of other students who were similarly unhappy with their Force powers. He fed his new friends what Snoke told him, and they fell to the Dark side of the Force.
Luke, sensing their switch to evil, verbally confronted them. The group attacked him. This prompted him to instinctively defend himself, and the conflict escalated, destroying the Academy. The group killed their former classmates who attempted to defend the Academy. Ben eventually found himself face-to-face with his uncle. He accused Luke of holding him back in the Force and favoring his son. Luke pleaded with him to come back to the Light. Ben angrily attacked him, knocking him out and nearly fatally injuring him. Luke’s son was the last remaining student. He tried to attack the group with his practice lightsaber. They easily held him back and almost killed him, but Ben stopped them. Knowing the boy’s potential in the Force, Ben insisted on bringing him back to Snoke as a captive.
It was then that Ben Solo was no more; he was Kylo Ren now, leader of the Knights of Ren and loyal student of Snoke. They departed the planet with their captive in tow, confident in the fact that they’d destroyed any chance of the Jedi returning.
And they almost did. Luke, after waking up, was unable to find his son among the rubble that had once been his Academy. The destruction of the Academy, the slaughter of his students, and the loss of his son drove him to despondency. He disappeared, on a search for ancient Jedi relics and any information he could find on Snoke.
When word of the massacre got back to Leia and Han, they were devastated and shaken. They became worried for Rey’s safety. Leia, who had felt Rey’s strength in the Force since she was in the womb, worried that Snoke would be able to corrupt Rey as he had Ben. They decided to hide her away on an Outer Rim planet called Jakku. With the loss of both their children, Han and Leia’s relationship fell apart.
When Luke’s son was brought before him, Snoke was struck by his presence in the Force. He recognized him as a rare conduit. In Snoke’s thousands of years of life, he’d only encountered three conduits before. Knowing that the boy would never cave to the Dark side, Snoke decided to ensure that he would never know his true nature. He put him into the stormtrooper program, subjecting him to heavy brainwashing. He was given the designation number FN-2187, and would later come to call himself Finn.
On the second day of Ficmas, hoffkk gave to me...
Two Silver Bells (A Garvez Fanfic)
*******
Penelope's fingers flew across her keyboard as she frantically dialed JJ's number for what felt like the umpteenth time.
"Come on... come on... pick up." She mumbled to herself as she fretted with worry. She had called everyone on the team at least twice already, but no one was answering. She had just been talking to Jennifer and listening in on Luke's conversation with the unknown subject a few seconds ago. He had been trying his best to talk down the psychopath, but, like most psychopaths, he wasn't being very cooperative. Luke pressed on anyway, trying to get the location of the third bomb the unsub had planted. The rest of the team had tracked down the first two and disabled them just in time. However, judging by the loud noise that blasted through her speakers only a moment ago, they weren't so lucky with bomb number three, which the unsub must have had close by, but how close? Were they okay? Were they hurt? Were they... No. She told herself tersely. Don't think like that. They're fine, perfectly fine. But the truth was, she really didn't know if they were. She didn't know anything, and the not knowing was killing her. Penelope's job was to know things. All things. But all she knew right now was that there was an explosion, and that the communications were no longer working.
After a few minutes, the ringing completely stopped, and she couldn't get through period. Completely frustrated, she gave her keyboard a loud whack. Immediately regretting her actions, she stroked her keyboard lovingly and said, "I'm so sorry, my precious. Mama loves you. It's just been a bad day. Then, to herself, she scolded, "Get it together, Garcia. Breathe and believe."
Penelope turned in her rolling chair to face away from her desk and took a few deep breaths. She was somewhat calm when her phone pinged with a text message. Whirling around at the speed of light, she grabbed her phone. She couldn't help but smile as she saw the name flash across her screen: chocolate thunder.
Opening the message from Derek, there was a picture of one year old Hank in an elf outfit, sitting on Santa's lap. The sight of her godson made her own grin widen even more as did the accompanying message: Merry Christmas, baby girl! Oh, how she loved her big black twelve pack and his little mocha mcnugget. This was just what she needed. Derek always did have a way of reading her mind and making her feel better during times of woe.
As she stared at the Christmas photo, Penelope got an idea. She may not be able to talk to the team, but that didn't mean she couldn't help them. Setting down her phone, Penelope headed down the hall to the storage closet and dug out the boxes of holiday decorations. Some Christmas cheer perked her right up, and she bet it would do the same for the team too. So, Penelope got to work decorating. She started with her office then did the team's desks and offices as well.
A half hour later, it was officially Christmas in Quantico and Penelope was back on her computer. She was in the middle of researching some eggnog recipes when her phone rang. Hitting the speaker button on her phone, she immediately stopped and said, "Come, all ye faithful and please save me from this silent night with some good news."
"Hey, Penelope." Jennifer replied in an amused tone.
"Oh, my god, JJ. What happened? Are you okay?" She questioned rapidly.
"Yeah, I--" JJ began but was abruptly cut off by her frazzled friend.
"How's Luke? Is he all right? Tell me he's all right." Penelope rambled.
"Well, actually--" Jennifer tried again to no avail.
"Because I swear if that fruit loop harmed even one hair on my luscious Latino Adonis, I'll--"
"Penelope!" JJ yelled, cutting her off this time.
"What?" She retorted sharply, startled by her friend's outburst.
Jennifer cleared her throat and calmly replied, "You're on speaker phone."
"Oh." Penelope answered as a wave of embarrassment washed over her. At least no one was around to see her wide eyes and flushed cheeks, and, with any luck, Luke wasn't anywhere near JJ right now.
"No worries, Garcia." Interjected a familiar masculine voice. "You're Adonis is a-doing just fine."
"Well, good." Penelope responded truthfully as she mentally kicked herself for having such a big mouth and no filter to go with it. It appeared luck was not on her side after all because Luke Alvez was clearly present and no doubt so was the rest of the team if the quiet snickering through her speaker was anything to go by. "Anyway, would someone like to catch me up on what the heck has been going on? I've been sitting in the dark here for half an hour."
"Sorry about that." JJ replied. "Things have been pretty crazy in Philly."
The whole team then launched into a retelling of the events before, during, and after the explosion, including how the bomb took out a cell tower and some power lines, making it impossible to get in touch until now.
"But everyone is okay, right? No concussions or missing limbs?" Penelope queried only half joking.
"We're fine, promise." Jennifer swore. "We're just boarding the jet and should be home within the hour."
"Good." She nodded to the empty room. "Oh, and BT-dubs none of you are allowed to make any plans for tonight."
"Why?" Luke question curiously.
"Well, JJ, my dearest gal pal," Penelope began, purposely ignoring Alvez. "I may have covered the bull pen thoroughly in the holiday spirit, and, when you all get back, we shall drink some holiday spirits. I figure we could all use some holiday cheer after this case."
There was a round of 'count me ins' then Emily spoke up, "Sounds good, Garcia, but I hope covering the office in holiday cheer doesn't require mistletoe."
"But of course it requires mistletoe." Penelope answered matter-of-factly. "Mistletoe is, like, the holiday decoration. You can't have Christmas without it."
"Well, I'm sorry to inform you but mistletoe is against department policy."' Emily told her as she tried to hide the amusement in her voice.
"Seriously?" Penelope whined. "Can't I just have one little thing of mistletoe?"
"Sorry," Emily said. "If I let you hang mistletoe, HR will have my head... then yours."
"She's right, Pen." Jennifer chimed in. "Do you really want to end up the focus another sexual harassment seminar?"
"Hey," She defended, thinking back to the humiliating day when her nicknames for Derek Morgan were plastered all over the 'what not to do' slideshow presentation in the sexual harassment meeting. "It's not my fault someone blabbed about my personal conversations with Morgan."
"Penelope..." Emily trailed off in warning.
Penelope sighed dejectedly and finally relented, "Fine, I'll take it down."
"Thank you." Emily replied.
"Well, you're not welcome." Penelope told her in disappointment.
Luke spoke up then and said, "We better wrap this up. It's almost time for takeoff."
"We'll see you soon, P." Prentiss told her.
"Fly safe, my lovelies." She retorted sweetly, all of her disappointment temporarily pushed aside.
"Bye, baby girl." Luke tossed back in a tone that told her he was wearing the biggest grin on his face.
Penelope, who was sitting back her rolling chair, suddenly sat ram-rod straight and stuttered, "Did he just-- Did you just -- oh no, you didn't!"
There was no immediate response, so Penelope called out, "Hello? Luke? Anybody but Luke?"
When the dial tone rang out, signaling the call had been disconnected, she spat, "Oh no, you did not just hang up on me!
Hitting the hang up button with a huff, she went back to her recipe search, all the while thinking about how to get back at Luke for the horrible infraction he had just committed.
*******
About an hour and a half later, everyone was gathered in the bullpen, laughing and drinking the best eggnog they had ever had. Well, everyone but Luke. Apparently, he had a mysterious errand to run. At least, that's the message Emily delivered to her. Upon hearing this, Penelope felt irritated. First, he steals Morgan's nickname for her, then he ditches her party like it's nothing. How rude! The most annoying part, though, was that she was actually kind of missing his presence. How she could miss a jerk like him was beyond her. Okay, maybe it wasn't totally beyond her. After all, as much as Luke teased her, he was still a good guy. He was sweet and smart, and funny (not as funny as he thought he was but still...) and not to mention total eye candy.
Suddenly realizing the path her mind was traveling down, Penelope quickly shook the thoughts away and returned her focus to the group. Rossi, Matt, and Tara were talking about restoring old cars, while Reid and Emily were checking out some recent photos of JJ's boys.
"Ooh! Let me see!" Penelope called out excitedly.
She was scrolling through her friend's phone and checking out all the adorable selfies her godson had taken, when Luke finally rolled in. Penelope tried her best to ignore him as he walked over all suave, looking like a hunk of burning love with his hair perfectly quaffed, chin perfectly scruffy, and wearing a leather jacket, fitted jeans, and satchel draped over his torso.
She was semi-successful until Luke began speaking.
"What's up, guys?"
When Penelope didn't reply, JJ said, "I was just telling them about my son, the photographer. He has apparently discovered the art of the selfie."
Luke moved closer to check out her phone as well, stepping between Penelope and JJ.
Penelope scoffed and rolled her eyes as she immediately took a step away from him.
"Everything all right?" He asked in response, knowing she was still peeved at him from before.
She had planned on ignoring him but couldn't help but respond, "You think you're so funny, don't you? Well, you're not. And for the record, you're also not Derek Morgan. You may be similar with the beefcake build, darker complexion, and the sexy smile, but you are so far from his level of swagger and agentry."
"Agentry?" JJ laughed as she looked to Reid and Emily.
"Swagger?" Reid said just as confused.
"Shhh!" Emily retorted. "I wanna see where this goes."
Reid and JJ shrugged as Penelope ranted on.
"So, I don't ever want to hear you using the phrase 'baby girl' again. Got it?" She questioned sharply.
"You like my smile, huh?" He teased, tossing a wide grin her way.
"That would be all you heard. Ugh! You're so infuriating!" She all but yelled as she turned around and began walking away exasperatedly.
"What are you doing?" Luke called out to her.
Penelope looked back at him over her shoulder and responded, "Consider this me hanging up on you." then stormed off in the direction of her office.
*******
Minutes later, Penelope was checking her email when she heard a knock on her office door. Spinning in her chair, she found Luke standing in the doorway who still wearing that enticing leather jacket as well as his satchel.
"Come to torment me some more?" She inquired.
"I actually wanted to apologize." He said, surprising her. "I didn't mean to upset you with 'baby girl' thing. I mean, I wanted to annoy you, sure, but not make you mad."
Penelope stifled a smile and explained, "I appreciate your apology, but to be perfectly honest I'm not really all that mad. It's just... that was just our special thing for when Morgan and I saw each other... and now I rarely see him, so it's kind of a sensitive thing for me." She paused a moment, then added, "I also just like yelling at you."
"Noted." Luke tossed back with small smile. "I'm kind of fond of it myself."
"You are?" She asked in confusion.
"Yeah, you're cute when you're angry." He clarified. "Your cheeks get all flushed and your nose scrunches and you start making up your own words."
"I always make up words." She argued.
"No, you use words creatively, stringing them together in a unique way, but you don't actually make them up until you get all fired up."
"Oh," Penelope's lips quirked upward at that, at how he noticed something so small about her. It made her wonder what else about herself he had noticed.
Neither one said anything, and it got quiet for a long moment as they continued to stare at each other. His soft gaze and cheeky smile sent a chill through her body, something that seemed to occur a lot these days but only when Luke was around.
Feeling a little awkward about her reaction to him, she broke the silence and asked, "So, was there something else you wanted... other than my forgiveness?"
"Uh..." He sputtered for a moment as he came back to reality. "Yeah, actually, there is. But you do know that you never technically gave me your forgiveness?"
"Didn't I? Oh, well." She said teasingly, not making any effort to do so now either. "As you were saying, kind sir?"
Chuckling under his breath, he began to walk toward her as he dug into his satchel. She made note move to get up from her chair or say anything else so he began to explain his real motivation for coming to see her.
"Well, I know you were upset about the mistletoe thing, so I got you a little something to make you feel better." Luke told her as he pulled her prize from his bag.
Penelope 's look of bewilderment turned into one of shock as she took in the item in his hands. In his grip was a candy cane striped head band with a long curved wire sticking out of the top, resembling that of a real candy cane, except for the end. At the end of the curved wire were some green leaves tied together with a single red bow and two shiny silver bells. Penelope stared in disbelief. This was why he was late? Because he got her a present?
"It's a mistletoe headband." He stated the obvious as he stopped in front of her. "I figured this way you could take mistletoe with you everywhere you go... and not get in too much trouble for it."
"That is incredibly thoughtful, Luke. I just don't really know what to say except that this little do-hickey is the coolest thing ever." Penelope said as she beamed and poked the bells on the end, imagine the cuteness of the jingling as she shared a magical holiday kiss with a special someone.
"Allow me." Luke offered then squatted down to her eye level and placed the head band on over her bleached blonde hair that cascaded slightly over her shoulders in light waves, contrasting heavily with the red ugly Christmas sweater dress she wore. He let his hands linger for a moment as he stared into her warm brown eyes.
Penelope's heart began to race as she processed what was happening and wondered what he was going to do next. She sat still and watched as he leaned forward and began to close his eyes. She let her eyes flutter closed in response and waited. A moment later, Penelope felt him press a tender kiss on her right cheek. It was sweet and simple yet still made her toes curl in delight.
Pulling back, he looked her in the eyes once more and said, "Merry Christmas, Sweet thing."
She touched the spot on her cheek with her fingertips and smirked as she watched him walk away. By the time he made it to the door, his words finally registered and she called after him, "Wait..." She stood up as he turn around with a cheeky grin. "What was that? What the heck was sweet thing?"
"I was trying out a new nickname for you, you know, since 'baby girl' is officially off the table." He teased.
"Well, officially so is sweet thing." She informed him. "Off the table and into the trash. Keep trying though." She added jokingly.
"Challenge accepted." He said with a wink, then headed out the door and back down to the party before anyone on the team got too concerned about their absence.
Penelope bit her lip and cocked her head slightly as she watched Luke walk down the hall and out of sight. He may not be the Mocha Chocolate Chip Frappuccino she's used to, but he sure is one hell of a Caramel Macchiato. Smirking devilishly, she flicked one of the bells on her head band and thought to herself, "Oh yeah, Luke Alvez can jingle my bells any day."
Fandom Related Question I’m Going to Answer Although Nobody Asked Me Just Because I Want To
A: Your current OTP.
My all time OTP is by a landslide Zutara, but lately I’ve been on a Miraculous Ladybug kick and I’ve been especially passionate about the lovesquare (have you seen that dance seen? eek!). I know a lot of people prefer specific pairing within the square, but they’re all the same people so I don’t really care. I like all the interactions.
B: A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind.
Well the first one that comes to mind is Talisto (Talia and Mephisto) from LoliRock. It’s by far the most popular ship in the fandom and I certainly understand the appeal, but it wasn’t something that stood out to me. Personally my biggest ship in that fandom was Irisana (Iris and Auriana)
C: A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can't.
I can think of a few sitcoms where the main pairing was something I never really liked, such as Ross and Rachel on Friends or JD and Elliot on Scrubs.
D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?
I wrote a Zutara fic and posted it on my Deviant Art long before I really knew what fandoms and shipping even were. Man was I naive.
E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
Have I added anything stupid to my fandom? Some of the stuff I’ve written is pretty stupid. And I sometimes make some really ridiculous headcannons. But nothing specific comes to mind.
F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it?
Probably the ATLA fandom. I didn’t get into HP until later on otherwise it’d probably be that. ATLA was sort of the first thing I became kinda obsessed about. I was livid about Zutara and Suki and Sokka are also so important to me. I was actually just reminded of how amazing Suki is on a post and it made me want to rewatch the series.
G: What was your first fandom?
Again, ATLA. My first fandom, which I am still a part of.
H: Do you prefer real-life TV shows or animated TV shows?
Normally real-life. Then I don’t feel like I have to hide it or make excuses for watching it. Because when I watch animated shows my brothers are always making fun of me for being a giant kid which doesn’t actually stop me from watching it, but I still prefer the option without the ridicule.
I: Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
I don’t think that’s ever happened to me. If I stop liking a fandom it’s normally because of me getting bored with it or upset about the writing.
J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.
Supernatural. All the way. I don’t even really watch it. I’ve seen the first few seasons and a few random episodes but I haven’t watched the whole thing. Yet I have Destiel stuff on my dash all the time and I’m always reading Destiel fanfic that pops up.
K: How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom(s).
Well with my latest obsession, Miraculous Ladybug, I feel like there’s a lot of homophobia and a lot of unnecessary idealization of Chloe. I mean, Chloe is going to get a Miraculous and right now I hate that. I don’t think she deserves it and she would need to be written a Zuko-level redemption arc for me to be happy about it, but only a small number of people seem to care. It’s like they’re just excusing her behavior. I hate that.
L: Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for?
If I could have only one request I’d probably ask for something Zutara. Probably something to fix that horrible ending. Although, who knows, I might ask for something in my current obsession. I’d love to see some Broppy or Lovesquare work.
M: A person who got you into a fandom and what fandom they pulled you in to.
Actually, I didn’t get in to Miraculous Ladybug until after I got into LoliRock and one of the blogs I followed posted about how much of a great show it was. I respected and admired them enough for the LoliRock stuff that they posted, that I decided to check out Miraculous Ladybug. Now I’m obsessed.
N: Your favorite fandom (for the people; not the thing you fangirl over).
For the people? Probably HP fandom. It’s like the mothership of fandoms. Everybody knows HP and talks about HP. There are a few bad bugs but mostly everybody is just so awesome. They all just realize how special HP is to our generation.
O: Choose a song at random, what ship does it remind you of?
The only song I can think of under such pressure is Chore by Mark Forster and that’s because I just saw an amazing fan made animation for Broppy that had that song and it literally made me cry. It was beautiful.
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Au for Miraculous Ladybug: Uhm Girl Genius Au. Instead of having Miraculous, Marinette and Adrien have sparks and have to face off against another spark, the evil father of Adren who is most definitely not like Gil’s father.
Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why.
Uhm let’s see. I shipped Eretria and Amberle in the first season of Shannara Chronicles. But seeing as how Amberle is now a tree I guess when I finally see season two that ship will be out the window.
R: A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships.
Uhm, I’m pretty passionate about Luna and Ginny in the HP fandom but I don’t really ever see anybody else ever shipping them. Which sucks.
S: What's a headcanon you have?
Well I have a lot of headcanons but since I’m assuming this question is about my current fandom, which is Miraculous Ladybug, I’d say that I headcanon Rose and Juleka as precious lesbians.
T: What are your favorite male/male ships or female/female ships?
I have plenty of gay/les ships but some of my favorites: Wolfstar, Supercorp, Destiel, Johnlock.
U: What are your favorite male/female ships?
Some all time favorite ships: Zutara, DoctorSong, Zenmasters, .
* V: Do you have any 3-way ships? If so, what?
I am not opposed to the 3-way ship of the three main girls in LoliRock but otherwise I can’t really think of any others.
W: 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.
from my five most recent obsessions
Harry Potter fandom: Luna is definitely my favorite character. I adore her.
ATLA fandom: Suki by far. I sometimes go through the series and just watch the episodes with her in it.
Miraculous Ladybug fandom: Alya. That scene where she flawlessly dances Adrien and Marinette closer to together and then goes back to her boyfriend who has an adorable little smirk. I just can’t handle it.
Trolls fandom: Aside from Branch who is sarcasm king, my favorite background character is Guy Diamond. He would make for an amazing best friend.
Brooklyn 99 fandom: Holt is my favorite character. When he pretends to be straight or when he acts especially gay are the best parts.
X: 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms.
From 3 random fandoms
OUAT fandom: Captainswan although I haven’t really been into OUAT lately.
MCU fandom: ScienceBros!
SW fandom: Stormpilot for TFA and Rebelcaptain for Rogue One
Y: A fandom you’re in but have no ships from.
Lord of the Rings. I support some of the ships (Frodo and Sam, Barduil, Gimli and Legolas) but mostly when I read/watch LOTR I don’t really ship anybody.
Z: What's a ship that you want to ship publicly, but everyone on tumblr hates it so you keep your mouth shut about it?
I don’t think I have any of those. Even when I ship unpopular pairings, I don’t really keep it to myself.
So, the results are in for the Christmas and New Year period.
It was a maintain.
Last week I lost 1.5lbs, and this week I gained it back again – so if nothing else in terms of the holiday season I’m no heavier than I was when I started which is a plus.
In contrast my other half managed her second week in a row losing weight at probably the most difficult time of the year, meaning she dropped at total of 4lbs over the holiday season and because of this also took home the group’s Slimmer of the Week basket!!!
Now it’s my turn to try and emulate her good behaviour because its officially 2020.
Now the hard work starts.
Currently there are a significant number of shirts in my wardrobe that look like they’ve been sprayed onto me – and for anyone that’s been following my blog for any length of time they’ll know that this is a serious issue – because I possess more of this this particular item of clothing than any other.
My last tally came to well over a hundred and then I just stopped counting because I didnt want to stop buying nice ones when I found them. Thankfully my partner seems quite happy to encourage this particular element of my behaviour and she rather likes me in a more flamboyant shirt.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m still not short of shirts and trousers that fit – but some of my absolute favourites are annoyingly out of reach at the moment, and I know that the ones I’m wearing represent (to me at least) someone that I’d rather not be at the moment.
However – there are still wonderful things to find – and (despite their tendency to appear in rather fuddy duddy shops for the middle aged and wealthier denziens of the world) for some time I’ve wanted a pair of Meyer trousers.
Prior to my dumpster diving approach to clothes buying I had no idea about these – but they’re ridiculously well made, comfortable and hard wearing trousers.
They also have lovely stitching and detailing – such as the lining which looks and feels totally awesome!
I picked these up for £5 in a Coventry charity shop – but if I’d bought them new the price would have been VERY different (link).
I have some absolutely prized possessions like these (such as my Paul Smith and Levis 501’s) all of which were found in charity shops – which will last me a very long time indeed if I look after them.
Annoyingly I gave an entire suitcase full of absolutely superb makes of shirts, trousers and denims back to charity about six months ago because they were slightly too big for me.
Consequently I’ve had to re-buy these items over the last month or two just to maintain an operational wardrobe, but it’s been a valuable lesson.
I’ve come to realise that what’s happened to my weight is not failure.
It’s just life.
Well. It is for me and many others anyway.
I have a friend who remarked casually on a walk several months ago that she has dresses and other items of clothing that are well over 20 and sometimes 30 years old that she still wears regularly.
At the time I think she expected me to be horrified when she admitted this to me – but to my mind it represented an absolute dream come true and is practically a perfect description of the guy I’d love to (but don’t think I ever will) be.
For a start it’s environmentally friendly to use clothes for this length of time and because of that I definitely approve. It just goes to show that if you are careful and buy really well made items then they last longer than supermarket fashion brands.
However that wasn’t the only thing that stood out when she said it because most of all her frikkin weight hasn’t changed at all for thirty plus years!!!
The truth is that a huge part of me wanted to just lose all of my fat and then live in a dream world where I never craved anything ever again and where I was to all intents and purposes completely over all of my battles with eating.
I guess it’s why I found the end of my tenure as MOTY such a relief – because I wanted my existence from that point on to be about more than constantly checking and monitoring weight and tinkering with aspects of my diet.
In all honesty I wanted this blog and my everyday world to become a story where I was well adjusted, happily employed, busy doing things I loved and finally – secure in a relationship that makes me feel valued.
Maybe by now I’d have a dog…
Maybe some of that is just wishful thinking though (possibly not the dog though) because I’ve realised that to leave oneself no breathing room or ‘space to fail’ with deeply entrenched eating habits is a bad thing.
At least for me.
I think I may have to accept that there will be periods in life where I’m the slimmest that I can be and there are others when I’m definitely going to be a bit more cuddly.
Thankfully I recently aquired a great barometer – and she’s proven that she’ll support me when I want to be lighter and also me when I’m a little heavier.
It’s nice to have a voice of sanity (attached to a finger invariably poking me in the ribs) when I’m busy trying to tear myself to shreds with negative inner monologues.
Truthfully though it’s actually helped to have my very first Christmas both off and on plan – and you can trust me when I say that I’ve enjoyed more than my fair share of Christmas cake and other treats!
This Christmas has been very very different to any other year that I’ve experienced though and I don’t just mean in terms of my willingness to consume seasonal nom nom’s.
Since 2016 it’s been relatively easy to have an austere holiday period. I could sit alone at home, not having to acknowledge the time of year and treat each meal time the same way that I would on every other day of the year.
If I wanted to have a salad on Christmas day then who would care? It would after all be only me sitting in front of the TV with a Pyrex mixing bowl full of lettuce so it wouldn’t matter one little bit.
However – after reaching my target weight Christmas suddenly (and a little unexpectedly) became more poignant.
Whereas the 25th of December used to be just a another day on the calendar to me, over time it’s become something that carries a lot more weight than it used to. I’d even go so far as to say that events relating to it have (bit by bit) changed every aspect of my life.
Amazingly it’s only the third year running that I’ve put a tree up.
The first year (link) was something of a triumph for me to do it at all because doing so was wrapped up in lots of long held and very negative associations with my childhood.
When I finally decided it was time to make a change in 2017 the act represented hope and a sense that things were finally changing for the better in my life. I was on my way to target and the tree I bought ultimately ended up covered with decorations that were donated to me by the women at my Slimming World group.
It also had a SW cardboard wish bauble on it with my goal.
Furthermore (although I didn’t buy it) I also had begun to try on some seasonally themed clothing – which was a major leap towards a festive attitude that I’d never felt before.
The following year was quite different though – and instead of me looking at my delicately dressed tree as a symbol of all the positive changes that I’d made in my life (and a reminder of the generosity of others) I instead sat back and viewed it with an overwhelming sense of sadness because all of a sudden it made me feel crushingly lonely (link).
Things happen for a reason though – and as everyone now knows it was that post which prompted my current partner to reach out to me.
The rest (as they say) is history.
This year therefore is (what I consider to be) my first real Christmas since I was a child – because the entirety of it has been spent with someone that’s not only very important to me but makes me very very happy.
Consequently we’ve done Xmas properly – from unwrapping our gifts on Christmas morning (I used to open them as I got them more often than not), having a special dinner, travelling to see family, hosting family, eating cheese and biscuits, indulging a glass or two of Prosecco (I had fizzy pop instead) tucking into in some festive chocolates, playing board games, watching movies and also diving (with great gusto) into some more chocolate.
None of this was really on plan – and I couldnt really even claim it was ‘flexible synning’.
It was really just synning – and therefore my overall maintain is something that is totally deserved. If I (well more accurately WE) hadn’t been so focused on exercise it could just easily have been a massive gain.
Instead my other half and I managed for the entire two week holiday period from the 20th December to today (my partner is a teacher so was off work) to go swimming every single day that wasn’t a bank holiday as well as walking an average of around 9 miles.
For me that meant about 14+ kilometres in the pool and almost 130+ miles on foot.
It’s going to be difficult to get out of the relaxed ‘treat myself’ mentality now though – but do so I must, because now Christmas is over, the decorations have to come down, and my exercise needs to continue without cake.
Balls.
That’s going to be a challenge.
However – I’ve done it before and I can do it again.
Today (Sunday) we got up at 6.30am, got ready, walked two and a half miles to Leamington’s Newbold Comyn leisure centre, swum a kilometre (and I managed a record time for me of 26.50) had a sauna, sat in the plunge pool, walked two and a half miles back again, went straight out to do the shopping (Aldi is CARNAGE unless you’re there waiting for it to open at 9.55am on a Sunday) and then finally returned home to have breakfast and a cup of tea at 11am.
Now all I have to do is not eat everything in sight for the rest of the day and week ahead.
It’s going to be a tall order – but I’m willing to give it a go.
From this point on though (just in case) I’m not going to get rid of the jeans and shirts with a waist that allows for a little bit of wriggle room, but instead put them at the back of a shelf in my wardrobe and save them for a ‘rainy day’.
I’ve currently got nine weeks left on my SW 12 week countdown (I purchased it a while back) and by the end of it I’m calling target – wherever that may be because I have absolutely sod all left to prove and I’m still as fit as a butcher’s dog.
My current goal weight in SW’s system is 15st, and I need to drop a stone and a half in order to get back into that range (15st 3lbs is the top end), which I think is probably do-able in two months.
If I can get any lower then that’s a bonus – but this time around I’ve not got to worry about photoshoots or press calls at the Ritz – I’ve just got to get to a maintainable and comfortable number that suits me and doesn’t mean I have to buy another 100 shirts.
(At least another 100 in a larger size…)
Here goes nothing!
Davey
Destiel #33
You're now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi! You both like destiel. Stranger: I know we aren't together anymore but do you and Lisa really have to make out in the hallways like that? CN (Highschool au) You: Think you're forgetting who was the one to call it off, Cassie. DW Stranger: But is it necessary to make out with your new girlfriend in front of my locker? CN You: Not sure why you should really give a shit. DW Stranger: Because I couldn't even get my textbooks, Dean. CN You: Then I'll make sure to move down a few lockers so you can get to your precious books. DW You: (Did you get that? My wifi clocked out for a second.) Stranger: ... Thanks. CN (yes I did) You: No problemo. DW Stranger: You guys seem to have hit it off pretty well.. CN You: Meh. It's more of just a hook up thing. Charlie thinks it's a rebound, but whatever. DW Stranger: Lisa probably wouldn't want to hear you say that. CN You: Probably not. Don't think girls are too fond of being referred to as a rebound. DW Stranger: No. And she seems really into you. CN You: Oh, well. DW Stranger: You seem happy though... So I guess that's good. CN You: M'on top of the world. DW Stranger: I am sorry, you know. CN You: Nah, don't be. DW You: I was suffocating, I know that. Was apparently 'too' into you, like that's a thing. DW Stranger: No, you were great. CN
I know it sounds stereotypical but it really was my issue, not yours. CN You: Sure, Cas. DW Stranger: I'm being serious. You were amazing. You are amazing. CN You: Then how come you called it off? DW Stranger: Because I'm a coward and you deserve better. CN You: Shitty excuse. DW Stranger: I know. CN You: Whatever. You got what you wanted, right? DW Stranger: Not exactly, but that's not your problem. CN You: No, it's not. Later, Cas. DW Stranger: Bye, Dean. CN You: [2:33 am. drunk!dean] You know what, fuck you. DW Stranger: What? CN You: You think you're so fucking entitled. Like, you can just make me fall in love with you, and then break up with me out of nowhere. And the only excuse you have is 'I'm a coward.' What kinda bullshit is that? DW Stranger: I didn't mean to hurt you, Dean. I know I'm a terrible person. CN
I'm sorry. CN You: That's so fucked. DW Stranger: I know. You deserve so much better. CN You: I just make out with Lisa because I want you to hurt. DW Stranger: It worked. CN You: Good. DW You: You deserve to be hurt. DW Stranger: Yeah... I do. CN
I just wish you were happy. CN You: Shitty drunk for a dad, dead mom, spending all my free time caring for Sammy? Oh, I'm on top of the world, Cas. DW Stranger: I'm sorry. CN You: [no reply] Stranger: Have you been drinking? CN You: Of course. DW Stranger: Where are you? CN You: A bar. DW Stranger: Okay... be safe, alright? CN You: Benny hooked me up with a fake ID. DW You: I always am. DW Stranger: We both know that's not true. CN You: I was careful never to cry infront of you. DW You: Or let my dad find out about us. DW Stranger: I know. CN
... it was too much, Dean. CN You: What was? DW Stranger: The amount of pressure that us being together put on you. CN You: What are you talking about? DW Stranger: You work yourself to the bone, Dean. With school and Sam and dealing with your dad, and trying to keep us a secret, and looking after me. CN You: That's my job. DW You: All of it. DW Stranger: It shouldn't be. CN You: You never thought that maybe I thought all that was worth it? DW Stranger: I'm not. CN You: That wasn't your decision to make. DW Stranger: I couldn't handle being another stress in your life Dean. You weren't sleeping or eating... It was too much. CN You: Yeah, because I'm so much better now, right? God, you're a saint, Castiel. DW Stranger: My problems were becoming your problems. CN You: That's what a fucking relationship is. DW Stranger: We're both just kids... you don't need that kind of stress. CN You: Whatever, man. DW Stranger: How are you getting home? CN You: Fuck knows. DW Stranger: I can come drive you. If you need a ride. CN You: Nah. I'll call Benny. DW Stranger: Okay. CN You: Later, Angel. CN Stranger: Bye, Dean. CN You: [no reply] Stranger: (The nest morning)
Did you make it home? CN You: Yes. DW Stranger: Okay, good... I worry when you drink. CN You: I know. Sorry. DW Stranger: I know it was probably my fault you were out drinking too. CN You: Don't flatter yourself. There's plenty of things in my life worth drinking about. DW Stranger: ... Do you want to talk? CN You: What is there to talk about? DW Stranger: About anything... about what else is making you drink. CN You: I'm failing. DW Stranger: Which class? CN You: All of them. DW Stranger: How? CN Stranger: You're too smart to be failing. CN You: No idea. But you know my dad's policy on school comes before sports. And I can't get my scholarship if I fail. DW Stranger: Do you need help? CN You: Yes, but not from you. DW Stranger: ... I guess I deserved that. CN You: That wasn't meant in a harsh way. Just.. Like I'd be able to concentrate on studying with you there. D You: DW Stranger: Maybe Lisa could help. CN You: Yeah, right. DW Stranger: She's smart, isn't she? CN You: Yeah, but. I don't know. Guess I could ask her. DW Stranger: Let me know if you need anything... I do care, Dean. CN You: I know you do. DW Stranger: And I'm sorry, for everything. CN
You'll get your grades up. CN You: Let's hope so. DW Stranger: You will, Dean. You're smart. CN You: You always thought too highly of me. DW Stranger: I'm being serious, Dean. When you're able to manage your time for school work you always do great.. you just have a lot on your plate. CN You: Feels like I always have a lot on my plate. DW Stranger: You do. CN You: Others have it worse, though. DW Stranger: Some. Don't be little how amazing you are though, and how much you've had to deal with. You're stronger than most people. CN You: Cas, I can't keep doing this. The texting thing. DW Stranger: I'm sorry. CN
I just miss you, I was hoping we could at least be friends. CN Stranger: You're right though, this isn't fair. I'll stop. CN You: Thank you. DW Stranger: (no response) You: [later that night] Hi, Cas. Have you spoken to Dean? :) SW Stranger: A little bit this morning. CN You: No, like recently? In the last hour, or so. SW Stranger: No, I haven't. CN You: Oh. Okay. Thanks, anyway. SW Stranger: Is everything okay? CN You: He usually always comes home to make me dinner. SW Stranger: And you didn't hear from him at all? Did you check with Lisa?CN You: I don't have her number. SW Stranger: I'll see if I can get a hold of him. CN You: Thank you. SW Stranger: Dean, I know I said I wouldn't text you but Sam is looking for you. Are you alright? CN You: [delayed] Shit, yeah. I'm at the library. I lost track of time. DW You: Jesus. DW Stranger: You've been studying, that's good. Look if you're really into it I can drop by your place and get Sam something to eat. CN You: Really? DW Stranger: Yeah. CN You: I just have one more paper to finish. I can be home in an hour, tops. DW Stranger: Take your time and work on your paper. I'll get Sam fed. CN You: I love you. DW Stranger: ... Is Lisa helping you? CN You: No. She's having a party. DW Stranger: Oh... well I'll have some food for you too whenever you get home. CN You: You don't have to. DW Stranger: It's not problem. I know you'll probably forget to eat if I don't. CN You: Alright, thanks, Cas. DW Stranger: Good luck on the paper. CN You: You do realise that us not being together is the equal amount, if not more, stress than having to keep us a secret? DW Stranger: You don't have to hide anything from John. Or be worried about him finding out. CN You: But I still have to worry about you. DW Stranger: No you don't. CN You: Of course I do. DW Stranger: What do you worry about? CN You: Just you. DW Stranger: But what about me, Dean? CN You: I don't know. Why do you still worry about me? DW Stranger: Because I'm still in love with you. CN You: Likewise. DW Stranger: You have Lisa. CN Stranger: Your Dad won't care about you dating her. CN You: Oh, come on. She's nothing. Not compared to you. And she knows it. DW Stranger: Please tell me you don't tell her that. CN You: I don't mean it in that way. I just mean that I don't love her. And she knows I still love you. DW Stranger: It's not worth all the times that you tense up if your dad comes home while I'm there. The anxiety I know you feel when we're in your bed and he's supposed to be gone for the night. I know in part of your mind you're always worrying about if he gets home early. CN You: It's not worth it? DW Stranger: I didn't mean it like that... CN You: No. It's fine. DW You: I have to finish my paper. DW Stranger: I just meant that... relationships aren't supposed to cause you so much anxiety. CN You: Okay. DW You: But for the record, it's not the relationship that gives me anxiety. It's my dad. And he's still going to be here, even if you're not. But it doesn't matter, because it's not worth it, right? DW Stranger: Dean you're worth everything... I was just trying to make things better for you. CN You: Make sure Sammy says thank you for the food. He's been slipping with his manners recently. DW Stranger: Yeah, alright. CN You: [no reply] Stranger: Sam's fed and working on homework. There's lasagne in the fridge for you. CN You: Okay, thanks. DW Stranger: Hows the paper? CN You: Terrible, probably. DW Stranger: Email it to me and I'll edit for you. CN You: Cas, you don't have to. DW Stranger: I'd like to. CN Stranger: I don't want you to miss out on your scholarship. CN You: You're making it so difficult for me to not love you, you know? DW Stranger: ... I'm a terrible person for being happy about that. CN You: Please come back to me. DW You: You and Sammy are the only good things I have. DW Stranger: We can be friends. CN You: No, we can't. DW Stranger: That's the best of both worlds isn't it? We can be around each other and you don't have to worry about your dad. CN You: I can't just be friends with you, Cas. Fuck sake. Why can't you understand that? DW You: It has to be together or nothing at all. DW Stranger: Why does it have to be like that? CN You: Because I love you. And it's too fucking hard. DW Stranger: We can be friends, Dean... we can be around each other and spend time together and you won't be worried about John. CN You: Forget I said anything. DW Stranger: Dean, I'm just trying to do what's best. CN
I do want to be with you. CN You: Well, I can't. DW Stranger: Can't we just try? CN You: My dad knows. DW Stranger: Knows what? CN You: About us. DW Stranger: There's isn't an us... not like that. CN You: There was. DW Stranger: What does he know? Did he say anything to you? Do anything? CN You: That doesn't matter. That's why we can't just be friends, and hang out. He says you're not allowed near me. So it'd have to be a secret. DW Stranger: ... It hurts me too, Dean. When we have to hide. CN You: It's only from him. DW Stranger: We can be friends, and then once you get your scholarship and leave we can be together. And we won't have to hide or pretend. CN You: How can we be friends? DW Stranger: I can help you study. We can have lunch together. CN You: We'd still have to hide. It'd just be friendship, instead of a relationship. DW Stranger: It's harder to hide a relationship... CN You: Cas. Just forget it, okay? It's too much hard work. It's not worth it. DW You: I can't be your friend, because I love you. And I'm willing to risk my dad beating me for us being together, but just for us to occasionally have dinner and study? I can't. DW Stranger: I do love you, Dean. CN You: But we can't be together. DW Stranger: We graduate in a year. CN You: Sure. DW Stranger: We can be together then. CN You: Sure. DW Stranger: Dean come on.. CN You: I have to drive home. DW Stranger: Do you want me to be gone? CN You: Yeah. DW Stranger: ... Okay. Sorry. CN You: It's fine. DW You: Thanks for looking after Sam. DW Stranger: Anytime. CN You: Until I get there, don't worry about dad coming home. He's been gone for about a month. DW Stranger: ... Sam didn't tell me that. CN You: I told him he's away working. DW Stranger: Is he? CN You: No idea. DW You: The day we broke up, I told him about us, he kicked off, did some shit, and then left. Not came back since. DW Stranger: Dean I'm so sorry. CN You: Not your fault. DW Stranger: I'll be here. CN You: Don't be. DW Stranger: We'll be together. We'll figure all this out. CN You: What? DW Stranger: We'll be together... if you want me. CN You: I do. DW You: What changed your mind? DW Stranger: Without John maybe it's better if we're together. CN You: He'll come back eventually, though. Then what? DW Stranger: We'll figure it out. CN Stranger: We'll go to college. CN You: Until then? DW Stranger: If it's whats going to be best for you, I can hide it. CN You: Only from him. Nobody else, I promise. DW You: I know he knows, but he can't see you at the house, or know that we're back together. He'll be so mad. DW Stranger has disconnected.
“Our culture tells you that watching Netflix or eating ice cream will make you feel great, and those things are great, but many of us in our society are very disconnected from nature,” Williams says. “Go outside, go often, go with friends, or not.” A 2008 study found that the percent of Americans who participate in outside activities like camping, fishing, or hunting has been decreasing by about 1 percent a year since the late 1980s. A survey done in the U.K. found that 70 percent of adults remembered doing most of their “adventurous play” outside, while only 29 percent of kids said the same. And, at least in 2001, when the Environmental Protection Agency did its National Human Activity Pattern Survey, adults spent 87 percent of their time indoors in buildings, and another 6 percent of their time in vehicles. “That goes to this issue of who has access to nature, and who can gain access,” says Michael Dorsey, the senior program officer for sustainability at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. “The decline is differential, FishingTails based on socioeconomic differences, on race, and on class.” As more people move to urban areas, nature gets farther away. And it’s easier to get to the nature if you have the money to pay for the gas to drive there, for the park entrance fee, for camping gear. When coming up with prescriptions for nature, Dorsey says, “we also have to do that in a political economic context.” That means making nature available for people who can’t trek to the mountains—making it part of people’s day to day lives. Williams brings up Frederick Olmsted, the designer of Central Park. game fishing apparel “His greatest lasting legacy,” she says, “is what he understood about how human communities really need nature, not just to make us feel better. Link Strategies that Stand the Test of Time: A Tribute to Eric Ward (Link Moses) - Whiteboard Friday
Posted by randfish
This week, we pay a special tribute to the late SEO pioneer Eric Ward. His link strategies formed the foundation of many of today's smartest approaches to links, and in this Whiteboard Friday, Rand covers several that are as relevant today as they were when Eric first started talking about them.
Howdy, Moz fans, and welcome to a special edition of Whiteboard Friday. This week we are paying an honorary tribute to our friend, lost but not forgotten, Eric Ward.
Eric was one of the pioneers of the SEO industry. In fact, he was a link strategist and a creator of links for websites before search engines even valued links on the internet. He was the very first link marketer that Amazon.com hired. He had a testimonial from Jeff Bezos on his website, from Google's Matt Cutts from many years ago, and worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations to improve their link strategies.
Beyond that, Eric was a remarkable contributor to the field of SEO through conferences and events, through webinars, through his blog and his Twitter account, and through countless conversations with SEOs like me. In fact, Eric was one of the first people who helped me to understand how link strategy worked, and I have many, many fond memories of him.
I'd also like to say that Eric and I had a number of phone calls and emails over the years about mental and emotional health. I know that's something that both of us have struggled with. I know that it's something that many of us in the entrepreneurial and technology worlds struggle with, and it's an issue that deserves more openness and more attention. I hope that we can do that and that I can do that here at Moz.
But, of course, this is Whiteboard Friday, and since we're honoring Eric, what I want to help today with is talking about some of his link strategies that stand the test of time. These are high level concepts, which we often dig into the very weeds and the details here on Whiteboard Friday, but I think it pays to pull back a little and think about links from a big-picture perspective.
For those of you who are active link builders and link strategists, much of this might be familiar. But I bet for your clients, for your teams, for your bosses, for the people that you work with, this sort of strategic level thinking sometimes goes ignored, and it means that you don't always get the credit that you should. So let's take some of the lessons. These are just a tiny handful of the plethora of value that Eric has provided over the decades that he had been in our field.
1. People and organizations link because:
First off, Eric liked to talk about why people and organizations link, and I think there's actually some excellent tactical and strategic thinking in here.
A. Content is deserving of their recognition
First off, he talked about how the content that they would link to is actually deserving of their recognition, which I think makes intuitive sense, but is something that is often not considered in a link building list. When we create our lists, we sometimes ignore that.
B. They have a non-financial incentive to link
Which makes sense. If you're trying to get someone to link, they need to have a reason, an emotional reason, a business-driven reason, a partnership-driven reason. If it's financial, of course, the search engines will penalize it or eventually penalize it.
C. The right person made them aware that the citation should exist
This was the form of work that Eric concentrated on particularly early in his career, when he was a very tactical link strategist, and I think it makes great sense, but is so often ignored, that we don't find the right people in our organizations to make that connection, that we don't actually make the organizations that should link to us aware of why a link should happen and where it should exist, and that this work, while very manual, is also very powerful. It can drive direct traffic, and of course it drive rankings in search engines.
D.The content actually matters to their audience
That whoever you're reaching out to, this reason, this incentive needs to connect with their audience. Otherwise, Google is unlikely to count that link, and visitors are unlikely to click on that link. I actually think personally that the two might be related, that there's some form of browser level data, user and usage level data that Google is using here.
E. That content is new (or recently updated)
I found this fascinating that Eric pointed out that it is vastly easier, vastly easier to get content to earn links from its audience, from a target if it is new or recently updated. It's much more challenging to do that with older content, which is one of the reasons why a lot of the strategies or a lot of the tactical elements that he proposed, when working with his clients, centered around: How are we going update, redo, or make something new that is going to cause all of these things to be true? I think if you can check off these five, you have got a great set to be able to go out and pitch people on why those links should exist.
A quote from Eric: "Identify and contact venues that would be inclined to care about the new content enough to write about it and/or to link to it." I think that really is PR. That's public relations, just in a digital marketing capacity and really a huge part of what successful outreach looks like.
2. Great execution is a result of strategy and planning
Next up, great execution is a result of strategy and planning. I know. Who knew? What's true in every other part of the business world and every other part of the world of things that get accomplished is also true in link building? Yes, it is.
A. Strategy flows from understanding your topic and online space
Eric liked to say that strategy flows from a deep understanding of the topic and the space, which is why a lot of these services that you might find online, that are very inexpensive or very scalable, don't work very well in links, because they don't have that deep topic and deep space understanding. When you have a deep understanding of the topic and the space, you can better target your link earning abilities.
B. A blueprint of how to earn links from various types of targets dramatically increases the odds of success.
So two interesting things in here. If you have a blueprint, that means you have a structure for how you're going to target and how you're going to outreach. If you consider various types of targets, and Eric mentions a number of these on his website. I'm planning to link to link to a bunch of resources in this Whiteboard Friday from Eric around this. If you choose those various types of targets, you will over time discover which ones are consistently high performing for you and have the best opportunity to earn you the links that will make a difference in your campaigns.
Eric would say what we do, and he's using "we" here to refer to link strategists rather than just link builders, "What we do is to help content find the audience it was intended for and the audience find the content." I love that. It has a beautiful simplicity to it, but also a deep strategy that unfortunately a lot of link building campaigns don't pay attention to.
3. Short-term thinking leads to devaluation, penalties, and poor results
Eric was extremely passionate, if you ever spent time with him or listened to one of his webinars or interviews, he was very passionate about this idea that...
A. Links that would exist, even if Google and Bing did not, are almost always the ones that provide the most value. That's both in traffic and in rankings.
Eric had this wonderful nomenclature. He was known as Link Moses, and Link Moses had these commandments about link building. He said, "The link schemer may eat today, but the link earner eateth from a bountiful table for a lifetime." I think that's a beautiful sentiment.
Folks, if Eric has provided you with value, and I can assure you that if you are in the link world, almost all of us, who have anything worthwhile to share, have earned our ideas from people who have learned from Eric or from Eric himself. His family is grieving, and it would be wonderful if we could help show them support. Geraldine and I, my wife and I have done so, and I'd encourage you to do so as well.
Danny Sullivan, who's now with Google, but of course who was behind Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies and then Third Door Media, has set up a donation page that will go directly to his family at bit.ly/ericward2017. I think it would be wonderful if the Moz community and all of us who have benefitted so much from Eric's help over the years paid him that respect. Thanks very much.
Take care.
The goose revolution...
The Flyway
For nearly a decade NW Texas and SW Oklahoma suffered from extreme drought and the water was simply gone. In this region playa lakes, large cattle ponds, and flood control watersheds hold millions of birds on a normal year. If you look at a map it ranges roughly from Big Spring, Tx up to Lubbock, and north to Amarillo. Then east towards Altus, Ok and Lawton, Ok and on up to Salt Plains at the northern end of the winter range. This is the “little goose wintering area”. This area is made up of mostly lesser canadas, specks, and snows. They feed in the peanut fields, milo fields, and winter wheat fields that keep them fat and happy all winter.
The Drought
The drought affected nearly everything imaginable. While some areas still had birds, the % of the norm was not even close. The birds that were used to going there had little to eat and little to no place to rest on water. The birds simply pushed elsewhere to find water and food, thus starting a change in the migration and the flyway. Over time and over a few seasons, Kansas and Northern Oklahoma began to explode with little geese. Thus sparked a change in the normal patterns of larger more territorial bigger Canada geese. Although they have the same markings and go by the same name, they are subspecies and far from the same bird. For more on understanding the subspecies of Canada goose from a hunters perspective, check out my other blog Same Name Different Bird.
Urban Wintering Geese
I will put my money on the table and comfortably say that Wichita, Ks holds more geese in a 30 mile circle of the metro area than any other city in the central flyway. Wichita has a ton of land inside city limits that is still farmed and this provides a safe food source for thousands of geese all winter. Wichita also has a landscape development trend that includes 2-3 ponds or lakes in neighborhoods and industrial areas. Wichita also is home to over fifty 10-40 acre sand pits with more being mined every year. These are in fact the ultimate goose refuges as they are often very deep and rarely freeze. Venture into the surrounding metro suburbs and these trends stay the same, more sandpits and neighborhood ponds, more urban farming. The geese can often go all winter in the city without ever being close to a decoy spread. You can begin to paint the picture of how many birds winter here! Say there are 50 sandpits and roughly 25 of them hold 5-10k geese, thats over 150k geese on a low estimation. Factor in 500-1000 on the neighborhood ponds, then add in 2-5k on the city lakes all within 30 miles of downtown and the numbers get INSANE.
Lessers vs. Honkers
Leading up to this year, lesser canada goose numbers in Kansas were absolutely incredible. The past two years have seen a slight decline and some have begun to return back to their native winter grounds in SW Oklahoma and NW Texas, but they haven’t completely disappeared. A whole new generation of lessers ages 2-5 years old doesn’t even know about Texas having water, that has led them to wintering farther and farther north as they are able to stay on open water across the region. This had led to a decline in honker numbers in traditional areas as the lessers have pushed in. The big honkers do not like to mix with the lessers as they travel in much larger groups behaving a lot like snow geese. I have witnessed a change in habits as the big honkers are more likely to feed by themselves in different areas not far from the roost area. They will often follow the lessers in the general direction and peel off somewhere quiet and less populated. While scouting this is a bit of a challenge as sometimes the lessers will pile in with them in the same field and you don’t know who got there first.
Summary
Goose hunting has changed tremendously in the last 5 years. The price of corn rising and falling has effected feeding areas and bird densities in wintering areas. The introduction to double crop farming in a lot of areas has led to the explosion of speck’s throughout new wintering grounds. The drought and lack of water in Texas for nearly a decade changed the migration of little geese tremendously, and the last two years has seen a change back to more normal wintering patterns for the lesser canada’s. The birds are smarter now that ever. Roughly 4 years ago when we first started using homemade A Frame blinds, they would decoy near them almost anywhere and were willing to come to the edge of almost any field. In that short of time everyone started using the A frame and hunting the edges, now birds are super skittish near any sort of large structures and are becoming more difficult to pull to an edge. An incredible goose killing friend of mine recently said “a goose decoy now only has the power to move them 100 yards in your direction” and it’s been so true. We have already made moves to switch tactics next year and go back to methods that were widely successful in the late 90′s and early 2000′s.
