The Pretty Reckless - Heaven Knows (Official Music Video) by The Pretty Reckless

Here's an interesting Song Saturday -- I first heard this song courtesy of my parents, who were playing it on one of their computers (I think they were looking up The Pretty Reckless songs in general, but it's been long enough that I don't really remember). The beat rapidly got stuck in my head, so I ended up asking what it was so I could listen to it on my own time. Mom told me the name, and a little while later I looked it up on YouTube, gave it a listen, and quite enjoyed it. And a little while after that --

I decided it was a Valicer In The Dark song. Though not in the traditional "focused on the trio themselves" way -- rather, this one made me think a little more about the people living in Six Towers, and their reactions to some of what the trio pulls off...culminating in them becoming very willing to hurt anyone threatening their heroes. Specifically:

-->The first couple of verses of the song set the scene -- "Jimmy's in the back with a pocket of high" becomes a dude hanging out in some alley by an abandoned house; "Judy's in the front seat picking up trash" is a woman walking the streets looking for any junk that she could possibly trade away for a few slugs -- in fact, I'm picturing her as the woman in the threadbare coat Smiler tips their hat to as the Three Pillars first enter Six Towers. And the first set of choruses -- "Oh Lord, heaven knows/we belong way down below" -- become symbolic of how the residents feel under the thumb of Lord Rowan

-->The bridge -- "I've had better days man/I've seen better days" -- refers to the residents seeing some of the changes the Three Pillars start making to the neighborhood -- specifically, the creation of the greenhouse -- and being like "???" They want to be optimistic, but it's hard given what they deal with on a daily basis from Rowan --

-->And then we come to the THIRD set of verses, which are trio-based -- "the devil's knocking at your door" is Rowan showing up to claim ownership of the greenhouse once it's almost complete, and shocking the three with his deliberately over-the-top rent, while "tell them it's good, tell them okay/don't do a goddamn thing they say" is Smiler getting him to agree to the "if you can steal the deed out of my safe, the place is yours" game -- and a smash cut to the trio escaping with said deed, to Rowan's horror XD

-->And then the second chorus and bridge are the residents of Six Towers being all "!!!!" over the Three Pillars getting one over on Lord Rowan...and then CONTINUING to get shit over on him, as well as helping them out with their lives (I'm specifically thinking Victor helping with ghost problems; Alice threatening the brutish porters Rowan hires to look after his buildings; and Smiler helping out with illnesses and throwing wild parties at Moontide)

-->And then we get to the fourth set of verses -- "Gina's in the back with a pocket of high" becomes someone (maybe the same woman as "Judy" before) spotting one of the assassins Rowan has sent after the Three Pillars...and picking up a rock and BRAINING them as the chorus starts up again. Rest of the chorus is Six Towers uniting to fight back against their oppressor and defend their darlings!

Aaaand that went on longer than expected. XD Still, hopefully that gives you some good insight into the music video that plays in my head whenever I hear this song! And if it does, well, I hope you just enjoy the song. :P
