Sometimes a Family Is a Human, a Naga, Two Dragons, a Fairy, and a Drider
Based on @goodieghosty's Drider!Virgil art.
-
Virgil hissed at the human, putting up his front two legs in a threat pose and baring his fangs. The little drider was afraid, so terribly afraid. The humans were usually afraid of him, too, and when humans were afraid of things, they tried to hurt them.
This human, though, he didn't run or get a weapon. He lowered himself slowly to the floor until he was sitting and at Virgil's level.
Virgil blinked his many eyes, confused. "You're... not afraid of me...?" he asked. He was terribly articulate for a child who looked so young.
"No," the human responded before laughing nervously. "Well, maybe a little, Kiddo..." He rubbed the back of his neck, jostling the gray shawl that lay around his shoulders. "Are you... alone?"
Virgil hesitated, watching the human with clear distrust. "Why?"
The human looked surprised. "Well, because you're a child. Children shouldn't be alone."
"Driders do not care for their young. My brothers and sisters scattered or were slain... by humans..." Virgil answered, frowning.
"Oh, Kiddo," the human said sadly. "I'm so sorry."
Virgil shrugged, averting his gaze.
"Would you like to come home with me?"
"Huh?" Virgil looked back at the human, confused. Why would a human want him around?
"I don't know what you eat, but I can get you food. And you'd have brothers, three of them. All... non-human," the man explained.
Virgil frowned again. "Do you live in the village?"
The human laughed. "No, in the forest. The village would not accept my partner or my children. So I do not accept them."
Virgil nodded. That answer was good enough. He skittered a little closer.
The man looked surprised for a second. Then he stood and offered his hand to Virgil. Virgil took it, careful not to harm the human's soft hand with his sharp fingers.
"What's your name?" the human asked.
"Virgil..."
The human smiled. "What a wonderful name. I'm Patton. You may call me that, or Papa, if you like. That's what my sons call me."
Virgil nodded and let Patton lead him out of the dim thicket and into the lighter parts of the woods. It was quickly growing dark. Virgil hated the dark, though he knew that was when he ought to hunt.
Patton gave his hand a squeeze, seeming to sense his fear.
Virgil gave him an appreciative smile.
It wasn't long before Patton pulled back some greenery covering a sheer rock face to reveal a door. Patton opened it, and behind it was a grotto that was more like a home. The floors were even wooden. There was a big table with chairs, a corner with several beds, a furnace, a large bed in another corner, cabinets, bookshelves, toys scattered across the floor.
Several humanoids looked towards the door as it opened. Three were obviously young, and one about Patton's age.
The older one was a naga, with a long yellow tail and a scar across one side of his face. He wore a black shirt and a hat, with a yellow kerchief in his pocket.
Two had leathery wings, scaly tails, and horns. They were dragons, Virgil realized, dangerous shapeshifters. One wore red and had green eyes. The other wore green and had red eyes.
The last was the smallest, and looked human, but... sharper. Virgil was very wary of this one in his dark blue dress.
He hid halfway behind Patton.
"Found another stray, Love?" the naga asked. At least, Virgil assumed it was a question. It didn't sound like one.
"Papa!" The dragons cried in unison, rushing the door.
The fairy, for that was what the smallest was, just watched.
Patton hugged the dragon twins with one arm, his other hand squeezing Virgil's. "Hello, my little lizards!" he teased, receiving giggles in response. He guided Virgil gently inside, but didn't shut the door just yet, not wanting Virgil to feel trapped. "Everyone, this is Virgil."
The twins turned their curious gazes on Virgil, and they looked like they were about to step closer when Patton said, "Don't crowd him, please. Remember how you felt when I first brought you here."
The twins nodded. Then the green-eyed one stuck out his hand toward Virgil. Virgil noticed he had claws, similar to Virgil's own hands. "I'm Roman!" the green-eyed dragon said.
Virgil hesitantly put his free hand out as well, uncertain. Roman took his hand, then moved their hands up and down. Virgil gave him a confused look.
"This is called 'shaking hands'. It's what humans do when they introduce themselves," Patton explained.
Roman nodded.
Then Roman's twin shoved him aside, bouncing excitedly. "Hi! I'm Remus! You're cool! You look like a spider! Do you spin webs? Do you eat bugs?"
Virgil shrank back, overwhelmed.
"Remus," the naga said gently. "Remember, he's scared. That's too much at once for him right now."
Remus nodded thoughtfully. "Okay! We can talk later. After he gets settled in."
The naga nodded approvingly.
Suddenly, the fairy was in front of Virgil, scrutinizing him with piercing blue eyes. "Greetings. I am Logan," the small child said.
Virgil gave a little nod.
"You are frightened. You do not need to be. Daddy and Papa are good. They take care of us."
Patton patted Logan's head. "He just needs some time, LoLo. Let him get used to everything."
Logan frowned, not seeming to understand.
"Remember how we talked about most people not being able to sense things like you can?" Patton began explaining. "He doesn't trust us because he doesn't know us yet and can't sense that he's safe here."
That seemed to be adequate for Logan, who wandered away to return to his book.
Finally, Virgil turned his attention to the naga, who smiled gently at him.
"Hello, Little One," the naga greeted him. "I am Janus. You may call me Daddy, but only if you wish. Otherwise, Janus is fine."
"Okay," Virgil said softly, holding Patton's hand a little tighter.
"What sorts of things do you eat, Spiderling?" Janus asked.
"Um, anything I can catch..." Virgil answered. "I like birds best, but they're hard to catch. I can't eat any plants, they make me sick."
Janus nodded. "Meat, then. Are you hungry?"
As if on cue, Virgil's stomach gurgled. He looked away, embarrassed.
"I'll make you something to eat, Virgil," Janus said.
"Thank you," Virgil answered gratefully.
Patton closed the door, leading Virgil further inside.
Virgil let Patton sit him down at the table, somewhat awkwardly folding his legs up under himself. Soon, he was eating happily, digging into the food set before him. He'd never had cooked meat before. It was delicious. He ate all of what Janus made for him, then more when Patton made more for him.
Virgil yawned, and Patton chuckled softly. "Ready for bed, Kiddo?"
Virgil nodded, not protesting when Patton moved to pick him up. He leaned against Patton, yawning again. He was set on a bed, the most comfortable surface he'd ever felt. He was out in moments. His last thought before he drifted off was that this place wasn't so bad.
