Nathan reacting to each member being removed Dethklok

Just a huge disclaimer forehand that I know not all the situations had the same gravity, etc. But I still wanted to talk about them because I think they're interesting.

I want to go in a crescendo of sorts so I'm not going through the episodes in chronological order.

Murderface and Toki

I'm starting with Dethsiduals (S3E07) because Toki and Murderface have been called useless by the rest of the band quite a few times, making them a bit of a slacking duo.

So, in this episode, Nathan, Pickles and Skwisgaar get all fed up with these two's behavior and decide to throw them out of the band. Nathan does the honors, of course.

At first, it's great. Their workload gets easier to deal with, managing to record several dozens of songs in mere hours. Pickles even says that kicking them out might have been the best choice.

That is until they realize, they're having TOO much fun. Their songs don't sound good because they're having fun. It's not brutal anymore, because They're so happy that it no longer is brutal, their music sucks instead. And you can't have Dethklok without brutality.

Eventually, they ask Murderface and Toki to come back, on the account that their sound simply isn't the same without them. It's definitely more focused on Murderface, though, as his negativity and aggressive behavior is partly the reason their music is brutal. Because he annoys them and criticizes them...

This theme makes a comeback in Army of Doomstar, of course.

Pickles

In Rehabklok (S3E08), where Pickles experiences is sent to rehab after a technical malfunction at a show.

Because they still need a drummer for the band, so they get a drum machine. Everyone is in awe and don't seem to find a problem with this change. Nathan even thinks it's perfect.

Though, he briefly wonders if this would make Pickles mad, only to be reassured by Skwisgaar that it's fine.

Sometime after, the drum machine has completely adapted to the band. The band can't stop praising the machine.

When Pickles comes back, no one seems too impressed and Nathan casually tells him that he's been replaced by the drum machine.

The drum machine gets too smug, though, and the band quickly grows tired of him. Also, Pickles has finished his last Rehab step which means he can join Dethklok again. And that they can get rid of this drum machine.

We all know how that goes, the drum machine tries to kill them and Pickles saves them. For which Dethklok are evidently grateful for, and also praise his return.

Skwisgaar

Finally, we get to Fatherklok (S3E05) where, in the search for his father, Skwisgaar abandons the band. Mind you this is the one instance where a member isn't kicked out but actually leaves off his own volition.

While Skwisgaar tries to make his new life in Sweden, Dethklok have a rehearsal. It doesn't go well. Toki is acting up because he's the only guitarist now, Murderface is too busy trying to contact Skwisgaar to care and Pickles' daddy issues are resurfacing. Rather than work this through, Nathan immediately decides to get Skwisgaar back from Sweden.

Problem is, when they get to Sweden, Skwisgaar doesn't seem to want to get back to Dethklok, which Nathan respects. Before leaving though, he gives Skwisgaar a few words.

We all know Skwisgaar quickly rejoins the band afterwards.

So what do we have here?

In Dethsiduals, the band is initially very glad to have kicked Murderface and Toki from the band. They feel like they work better without them, however it's a double-edged sword because they work too good, and that is not good for the band, in fact.

In Rehabklok, the whole band seems to be doing great with the drum machine replacing Pickles. With time, though, the machine's attitude puts them off and they're glad to have Pickles back with them.

In Fatherklok, the only sort of positive reaction to Skwisgaar leaving seems to be coming from Toki, who dreams of finally being the lead guitarist. Murderface and Pickles are too wrapped in their own bullshit to notice anything. But Nathan? Nathan doesn't like the band without Skwisgaar. We don't have a single moment of him enjoying Skwisgaar's absence and clearly wants him back.

Now, like I said at the beginning of the post, I know all these episodes had different types of situations. Toki and Murderface were in a month-long suspension, not officially kicked out. Pickles' rehab did imply he was coming back at some point. Skwisgaar was the only one that actually left Mordhaus physically and Dethklok as whole...so it makes sense Nathan had a wildly different reaction to the latter compared to the other two.

However, I think it's still very telling, that not even once did Nathan consider that the band was better without Skwisgaar. In Dethsiduals and Rehabklok, you have Nathan actually satisfied at first with the new state of the band. But in Fatherklok, this never happens. Instead, Nathan very quickly grows annoyed with the remaining three and believes getting Skwisgaar back is the solution to fix Dethklok.

The last part, especifically. By the end of their respective episodes, Nathan did want Murderface (+ Toki) and Pickles to come back, but so did the other side, which made the reunion easier. Nathan didn't really have to do a lot to make them join again. In Fatherklok, however, Nathan and the rest of Dethklok physically go to Sweden to recruit Skwisgaar back, to which Skwisgaar sharply refuses. In his own, emotionally constipated way, Nathan then compliments Skwisgaar before walking away, calling him nothing short of exceptional and special.

Nathan doesn't want Skwisgaar back in the band because Skwisgaar's lack of skill and bad attitude improve their music somehow like Murderface. He doesn't want Skwisgaar back because Skwisgaar's not an arrogant sex machine like the drumming robot (ironically, Skwisgaar is very much this in all probability). He wants Skwisgaar because he just does. Because the band is not the same without him. Because Toki can't replace him as lead guitarist. Because their dynamic is falling apart without him around. Nathan wants Skwisgaar to return to the band because both musically and personally, he values him. Skwisgaar is a hard worker, and easy to get along with for him (Skwisgaar does reserve his arrogance towards Toki and Murderface after all). Skwisgaar doesn't make him mad like Murderface and Toki with their entitlement, Skwisgaar isn't irresponsible like Pickles can be with his habits. In Nathan's eyes, Skwisgaar is essentially a good presence in the band that doesn't pose him problems, and it's exactly why he's the member Nathan can easily recognize as key.

And thus, it is no surprise to anyone that these two stick together in Nathan's next project after the band breaks up. Of course, the project seems more like a tantrum than anything else but it's still worth noting that they agreed to stay together for it.

While Murderface, Toki and Pickles embarked in projects unrelated to music, Nathan and Skwisgaar stuck with music exactly. What's even more interesting is that Nathan's trying to get away from Dethklok's sound, yet wants Skwisgaar, an elemental part of Dethklok, to be part of this new idea.

No, but jokes aside, I think of their relationship a lot. The subtle compatibility. Unlike Pickles and Nathan's friendship where they're close enough to go at each other's neck and make up later, Skwisgaar and Nathan's is much more quiet, but it's latent. Because they're both awkward but hard-working and highly perfectionist people, it's more evident when it comes to music.

In addition, Skwisgaar is essentially the one member Nathan has never truly gotten mad at. We've seen him constantly be irritated by Murderface, have serious issues with Pickles and even have a fight with Toki in Skwisklok (S1E10). With Skwisgaar, however, it seems like their relationship is much easier. They understand each other both on a professional and friendship level.

They might not be each other's most intense or even most important relationship, but it's the kind of relationship where you know the other person will always have your back. The type that's both easy and comforting. I love them.

On Army of the Doomstar Day - And Remembering Jon Schnepp

Hey Goofballs. I didn't really have anything like this planned until the moment hit me, spontaneously. Today's a very special day, as Dethklok the live band gears up to go on tour, we've been blessed with not only a new Dethalbum, but a conclusion to the whole series. This being a momentous finale, over a decade in the making, I again wanted to take a minute to remember someone, just as I did last year..

Jon Schnepp was a guy you could pick out, even if it weren't for the fact that he was usually the tallest dude in any given crowd. He loved comics, music, good vegetarian food that didn't suck, and loved meeting his sweaty nerd fans. As a comic book artist myself, I had the rare privilege of meeting Jon on several occasions through the years at various comic conventions. We also kept in touch on social media, leaving likes and words of praise on each other's projects. Genuine to a fault, Jon was always the biggest fan of anything his friends were doing. He had impeccable comedic timing too. I'll never forget the message he sent me on Facebook when friends and I attended the first ever 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise:

"I want to go... :("

For as big a Metalocalypse fan as I've been through the years, Jon absolutely eclipsed me in all ways. He loved the show, loved talking about the show, loved discussing production and animation and the characters, whose likenesses he himself designed. One of my prized possessions is a comic book Jon signed and drew a Murderface on the inside frontispiece of. We all agreed that triangle-hair was the pinnacle of good character art.

When he died in 2018, I remember he was either going to be at, or had recently attended a convention in my former hometown of Columbus, Ohio. I remember letting him know I wasn't going to be able to make it, but promising to catch him on the next one. I never got the chance.

Jon Schnepp left behind a hole in the cartoon and comic industry that has yet to be filled to this day. But he also leaves a hell of a legacy. I've been in comics since the early 2000's and one thing I can guarantee you readers is that the rarest thing in the entertainment industry is this: Getting the ability to see a story through to its conclusion.

As artists, it's a sad fact that we don't always get to see what we create come full-circle. We're extra-super lucky still, to have that circle continue on after we're gone. Regardless of what you believe, I bet it would do Jon proud to know his work lives on, today. I bet he'd love the movie and it's wild animation and incredible art and music and story. I bet he'd be happy to have that closure. I know he'd love hearing how much we all enjoyed it, knowing the wild ride we all took to get here.

Jon, we miss you, man. Brendon, Tommy, writers, artists, animators, and any and all sweaty nerds reading this -- you did it. We the fans love you and we'll see you on the road. Hold your heads high. You carried the torch across that finish line.

How Brendon came up with Pickles and Nathan - What is the least metal name I can think of?

Toki Wartooth - Tommy or Brendon's name frome Viking name generator. Toki is like a child. Infantilized. (yes Brendon literally said this.) rhythm guitarist, but he's the darkest character.

Skwisgaar's had so much sex he doesn't like sexual things and looks for non-sexual things to get horny from.

Nathan is the guy who can never find the right girl. He's always going for the wrong thing.

Murderface is probably an incel.

Pickles has been around the block. This is his second band. He has a whole history of being in bands.

Part of producing the show is to mind the budget. They charge you by the frame. It would take 4-5 months and done domestically for 15 minute shows. Sometimes they turn it in on Friday, a couple days before the episode airs.

Gene will always be part of this no matter what. Gene is under a lot of pressure. Gene is literally a superhuman. He has to play in time with the animation and looks for the count from his peripheral vision. He takes a month beforehand to bear down on the live show. He will rehearse to the click track.

Gene loves working with Brendon and Ulrich (the producer). He's never seen Brendon stress. He's really reliable.

All the members live in Brendon's head and annoy him in different ways. But he's been close to Nathan a lot this year.

He doesn't know what is his favorite song to play. But he thinks its really fun to play Thunderhorse.

Gene's favorite member is Pickles because of his quote, "Couldn't do it, too damn drunk." and definitely not just because he's the drummer.

Gene's favorite song to play: The Gears, Dethsupport because they're challenging.

Gene and Brendon talk about the fact that Laser Cannon Deth Sentence was so hard to record they decided to never play it live but now Gene says he wants to try.

Brendon wanted to up the ante when making Army of the Doomstar. This is the conclusion of the Metalocalypse story, the one that began in the first episode.

The movie is mainly about the ego. It's a dipshit messiah story. Comedy that turns into an action movie. Go from the corporate world of Dethklok to the religious world of music.

This is the end of that story. It's about the search of the song of salvation.

On why Brendon decided to end Metalocalypse:

It's really important to end a story and not let it linger forever. Finishing a project is really important. A project that goes on forever diminishes the story.

Is there a possibility that Dethklok will do something beyond this? There is. I don't know. I think that Dethklok will live forever. This is the end of the Metalocalypse story.

okay so i officially finished metalocalypse, i finally watched army of the doomstar ! i’m freaking out ! it was so queer like oh my god. the moment charles touched nathan’s face i was like “😧 are they gonna kiss..” and then PICKLES AND NATHAN?? Just finished army of the doomstar and all I have to say is holy shit this movie is fucking amazing and a pretty great ending to Metalocalypse. I couldn't have asked for a better movie.

This is me mostly rambling about the movie far warning.

All the fucking scene with Nathan and pickles had me crying, throwing up and fucking squealing from how gay they are in this movie.

Every time they showed will getting hurt or scared hurt me physically and that seen were they had to drowned him had me fucking crying. This movie finally made me fall in love with William. made me want to protect him at all costs. OH AND THAT ONE SCENE IN THE BATHROOM SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME MAN.

Weirdly enough Skwisgaar didn't have that many scene but whenever hum and Toki where on screen it was perfection.

AND THAT ONE SCENE AT THE END WHERE TOKI IS HOLDING SKWISGAAR IN A BRIDAL HOLD WAS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL SKWISTOK FANS BE FUCKING EATING THIS MOVIE.

And when knubbler died I had to pause and just sit there because I was FUCKING SOBBING.

I love how they handle Abigail in this movie. I has never a really big fan of her in the show but the way the movie handled her made me appreciate her character in the story a bit more and how she wasn't seen as the bad guy for all the stuff did at the beginning of the movie.

If anyone has a screen shot of when Toki is holding Skwisgaar I would love to have it and would be grateful for it.

OH one last thing! this movie is fucking stunning, from the backgrounds to the animation. its perfection and it all I would hope for from this movie.

5: SOS by Dethklok

Listening to this right now and realized that Dethalbum IV is the only album that features a choir and made my self cry because I then realized that the choir in SOS represented the army of the doomstar, and then cried even harder when I thought about how it was made as a thank you gift to all of us who held on to the show and the music after everything that adult swim did to it. I think about everyone I've met in the metalocalypse fandom, truly the kindest fandom I've ever been a part of, and how Brendon Small walked through fire to give us an ending and a cathartically satisfying finish to one of the greatest stories ever told. Water is extremely sacred to his religion and he was entrusted with shepherding the waters that run through creeks, brooks, small rivers and ponds. There's just like extremely specific coincidences in both this song and the next one as well as the over all vibes that just really embodies him. This is another song that I found while making the same playlist. I've been writing short stories about Brother Lonely-Waters and theres one that I named after this song. Everything about this song fits him so perfectly. Its my favorite song of all time, I got to hear it played live at redrocks while it was pouring and the wind was crazy. Honestly a religious experience, thats how the song was meant to be experienced

Kloktober 2023 Day 10

Came Back Different

I wasn't really sure what to do for today so I decided to try something new for it aka no Skwistok today

This entry features Murderface and…someone he would really like to see again, especially after the events of Army of the Doomstar.

“With our cutting-edge technology we actually managed to reconstitute his body, well, what was left of it. We did have to replace several parts with metal because the skin was completely unsalvageable. Some organs have been artificially replicated too to allow him to subsist as…” The surgeon seemed reluctant to say the word. “Human being.”

“How could you hide this from us?!” Nathan looked at Charles in complete disbelief. 

“There was, uh, a lot going.” Charles said, straightening up his clothes. He was no longer wearing that monk robe, instead returning to his old suit and his old job too. “As you can imagine, I didn’t really have the time to inform you guys.”

“Still!” Nathan complained.

“We tha’t he was dead!” Pickles added.

“He explodeds right in our faces!” Toki said, before replicating the explosion noise. “We saws it!”

“I, uh…didn’t sees anythingks because I was unskconstcious.” Skwisgaar scratched the side of his neck. “But they tolds me he was dieds.”

“Dood, it was pretty horrible-”

“I hads you in my arms, Skwisgaar.” 

“You don’ts has to says it like dat.”

“Skwisgaar, you were seriously just out.”

“I fucking knows!”

“It’s nuthin’ ta be embarrassed about!”

“Ams not-”

“Isch it true?” Murderface raised his voice to be heard amongst the ruckus. They all turned to him and then back to the surgeon.

“Well,” The man cleared his throat. “Like I said, we essentially patched him back together so we’re unclear about the side effects so far. But he’s alive, yes.”

“Can we schee him?” Murderface asked, for once not making an inappropriate comment or cracking a rude joke. His left fist was clenched and his eyebrows were furrowed together though not out of anger. 

It was guilt.

The surgeon  and Charles exchanged glances and the surgeon gestured at his assistant, who quickly left through the door.

The guys stared at each other in disbelief, chattering between each other. Toki kept insisting on telling Skwisgaar the heroic details of when he carried him on his back for God knows how long. Pickles threw in random guesses of how their friend would look like now and Nathan listened attentively. Murderface didn’t participate, just stood there, thinking and feeling his palms get sweaty. Fuck. Fuck, was it true? Was it really true?

Less than a minute later, the assistant came back, his hand on the doorknob as if to keep it from opening preemptively. 

“Alright.” The surgeon looked at Dethklok. “Just remember, guys, he might be a little different. So be patient. Also-”

“Just shut up and let us see him!” Nathan demanded.

“Just do as they say.” Charles said, shaking his head with resignation.

The assistant opened the door and in came…

Dick Knubbler, looking pretty much the same as when they last saw him. Well, his legs appeared to be exclusively made of metal now, as well as his neck. His eyes had now been updated with some sort of futuristic-like visor. “Long time no see, babes!” He greeted them, and there was a metallic texture to his voice, too.

They all stared at him astounded for a good 10 seconds until…

“Holy shit!” Nathan went first. “It’s fucking real! You’re alive!”

“It takes more than a bomb to kill me, babe.” Knubbler smirked, striking a pose.

Murderface walked up to him, unable to contain himself. “Knubbler, I…I’m schorry.” He said with heaviness in his voice. “I did thisch to you…I’m schorry.”

Nathan frowned. “Murderface-”

“Oh, Willy!” Knubbler wrapped his arms around Murderface’s neck. “You don’t need to apologize. I’m better than ever, babe!” His face drew close to Murderface’s, smiling.

“Woah…” Nathan stepped back in surprise.

“Dood…”

“Dat’s…” Skwisgaar started.

“...Gays.” Toki finished.

“Oh, yeah!” Knubbler glanced at the others without letting go of Murderface. “I’m feeling totally gay, babes! While they were putting me together, I had a lot of time to think, you know? And I thought, life is pretty short to not be gay!”  His ‘eye’ winked at Murderface. “How about it, babe?”

Murderface’s cheeks turned red. “G-G-G-Get the fuck off me!” He said, trying to shove Knubbler. “I’m not gay!”

“Now, Willy,” Knubbler shook his finger. “We both know that is not true, don’t we?” He said, hugging Murderface by the waist.

“Huh…” Nathan, raised his eyebrows while the other three just watched agape.

“What the fuck are you talking about, man?” Murderface weakly tried to resist the affection, with a nervous chuckle. “He’sch totally out of hisch mind!” He whispered to his bandmates.

“Right.” Charles adjusted his tie, visibly uncomfortable. “Let’s give Murderface and Knubbler some, uh, some privacy.”

There were mumbles of agreement and the boys followed Charles to the door. 

“What?!” Murderface yelled, while the assistant took notes on Knubbler’s behavior. “Are you fucking kidding me?! Don’t leave me alone with thisch fucking lunatic!”

Nathan was in the doorframe when he turned his head. “You’re fucking gay, Murderface. Just get over it.” 

“Yeah.” Three voices said in unison.

“Oh, fuck you, guysch!” Murderface yelled when the door closed. “You’re the gay onesch!”

“Come on, Willy, just give me a kiss.” Knubbler insisted, puckering his lips. 

“God damn it!” Murderface moved his face, flustered. “Schtop being gay, Knubbler!”

“After you kiss me, babe.”

AAAAAAH!!!! I just finished Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar and I haven't felt that high energy watching something in a very long time. I'm not gonna spoil anything that happened because it literally just dropped a couple hours ago but goddamn. Never thought this show would get the finale it deserved but I'm so happy with what we got.

Can't wait to watch Army of the Doomstar. Ordered the blu-ray, so it'll be here tomorrow. Don't know if I'll dive right in or wait until the weekend, since I'm working long shifts the next three days. (Meaning 10-11 hours each. Oof. I'm ready for these hardcore training shifts to be over. *lol*) Mmm... need to finish TFBB fic, though, and there's still lots of work left to do on it. 😬 We'll see how I can work the writing around watching, I suppose.

Looks like there's a Dethklok show in Atlanta on the 3rd, too. HOWEVER, I cannot justify ~$200 just for a single ticket. 😩 It would be an overnight stay, too, considering it's a 2.5-3 hour drive one way. UGH. Oh well. I'll live without the live show, I guess.
