The Winter Solstice Part 1: The Spirit World
I'll be watching this two part episode as two separate episodes.
Starting strong with some stunning pastoral views.
I like how Appa's shadow undulates over the clouds.
Is Aang passively airbending at all times when they're on Appa? Otherwise how do they hear each other? Unless it's a windless day and they're flying at walking pace there's no way they would be able to have a conversation.
Can you imagine the freedom of being able to throw yourself into the air with no consequences? Imagine how being able to ignore gravity since (presumably) a very young age would shape your worldview. Aang must look at the world in a fundamentally different way.
Blow dried Momo.
Could Katara stop babying Aang for five minutes?
The perspective is so funky in this shot that Appa looks Momo sized.
Did Gyatso say that Roku specifically would help Aang? He said that someone in that special room would guide him, but the only living creature in there was Momo.
Emotional support Momo. Maybe the help Gyatso spoke of actually was Momo.
Every time Iroh appears I become increasingly convinced that the creators of this show are fans of The Big Lebowski.
I love Iroh weaponizing teenage awkwardness to get himself five more minutes in the tub. I think I can also now declare myself officially used to Zuko's voice. I no longer find it muppety.
This is the environmentalism after school special.
The way this guy talks about flying Bison and airbender tattoos, is he actually old enough to have known airbenders?
Katara blindly trusts this guy because... he's old?
Pretty.
"It is the greatest honour of a lifetime to be in your presence." "Nice to meet you too." Yep, those greetings are definitely in proportion to each other.
I love the lighting in this scene. Everything has this golden glow.
The winter solstice sounds a bit like Halloween. The walls between worlds thin to almost nothing and things can cross over which shouldn't.
Aang's eyes are brown in this episode.
I love this attitude. Optimistic, upbeat. "I have to try, don't I?" is so true.
Is it just me, or is Sokka's ponytail weird this episode?
I think this is the Bumi guard voice guy again.
This episode appears to be taking place in a part of the Earth Kingdom that hasn't been taken over by the Fire Nation (unlike last episode). So for Zuko & crew, this is enemy territory. Iroh, who is a general with a fancy title, the brother of the leader of the fire nation (so I guess the next in line to the throne?), and so recognisable to the enemy that they can identify him without a single piece of insignia or even clothing denoting his country of origin, thought it would be a good idea idea to have a solo, unguarded spa day here? I bet the fire nation is happy the other brother is the one in charge.
More pretty.
Sokka racking up some major Big Brother points this episode. Aang may be the Avatar, which makes this kind of stuff his responsibility, but he's also 12 and clueless. He shouldn't have to face this alone.
This village must be close to the Avatar world's equator because that sun set ridiculously quickly.
You know, if I turned around and saw that thing following me, my first impulse would be to scream and run away, not introduce myself. This is why I'm not the Avatar.
If that's their water tower gone, this village is done for with or without the Avatar's help.
This spirit is throwing a proper tantrum. I love the way it moves too fast to see. I did not see Sokka getting kidnapped coming. I actually had to rewind and watch it again because it happened so fast that I did not see it at all the first time through.
I think the fire nation solider here is the Bumi guard voice too.
This is an insane shoulder to waist ratio. Also nice to see Zuko figure it out so quickly. This show has given me the impression so far that he's kind of stupid, but I guess not.
It's a panda! Black and White spirit, plus the environmentalism stuff from earlier, I really should have put that together sooner.
"I Failed." yeah you kind of did. So pick yourself up and try again.
Bird horses? Also those earth soldier helmets are probably really effective, but they look so stupid.
Proof that Katara is used to relying on Sokka to do all of her thinking and planning like I said last episode. If Sokka was the one left behind and Katara the one missing, he would not be so passive.
"All I have to do is figure out what I have to do. But once I do that, no problem." Even the most impossible tasks can be broken down into manageable steps. I love Aang's attitude.
It's so painfully in character that what gets Katara out of her funk is looking after someone else.
Where's Momo in all this?
In the spirit world, the avatar is just some guy? Can't bend. So what makes him uniquely qualified to be the guy who deals with spirits?
Dragons can talk with their whiskers. I'm sure I've seen that somewhere before.
Iroh can see stuff in the spirit world? Maybe it's an old people thing?
How stupid are these earthbender guards? Nice call back to the water heating trick. This show is really good at set up and payoff like that.
This dragon is very fluent at talking in pictures. Also the sky in the accelerated days and nights animation is actual live action footage of sky, right?
Earthbenders can skate on their bare feet. That's beyond cool. Imagine having an inborn ability to sock slide at will. I'd never walk anywhere again. Only slide.
Comforting Appa really did get her out of her funk and inspire action. Neat.
Aang and Zuko's stories do intersect this episode after all. Also I had no idea the two parties were this close to each other. Zuko showing this episode that in addition to deductive reasoning, he also has long-distance tracking skills.
I want to visit this village just to see the sunsets in person.
Iroh was right, they were clearly outmatched. These guys are just the worst. They're on a dirt floor in a dirt cave with the advantage of numbers and actual pants, and they still lose. Did Iroh even firebend?
I take back what I said earlier about Iroh being stupid for going off alone in enemy territory. If this is the calibre of soldiers he knew he would possibly run into, then he was perfectly safe all along. Although the last minute rescue from Zuko was a nice touch. Did anyone really believe that he would choose chasing the Avatar over his uncle? I didn't.
I like the creepy spirit whispering at the gate.
Did Katara yelling to Aang attract the spirit's attention to that main building? Because it seemed to be ignoring it before.
Chekov's acorn!
When Aang went to the spirit world, his body stayed behind on the statue's head. But when Sokka went his whole self was stuck there? Also that bathroom joke is payback for all the denied potty breaks.
Sokka's practicality and bluntness is just so perfect this episode. A nice counter balance to the spirity stuff. Just spent 24 hours in the Spirit world? That's nice. Can we have supplies?
Momo's back in these final scenes, but where was he the rest of the episode?
How does Aang know the island is in the fire nation? From the temple architecture?
Final Thoughts
I really like this episode! There is so much that is good: -beautiful visuals (so many sunsets!) -interesting sound design (that whispering was neat, and the single wind chime in the last spirit attack was so eerie) -so many well-executed set ups and payoffs (acorn, firebending heating stuff, how the spirit does relate to the burnt forest from the beginning) -So much good dialogue, from Zuko especially ("Now would you please put on some clothes?!?" / *sniffs* "Yeah, that's Uncle Iroh.") -relationship stuff (Sokka being big brother, Katara being lost without him until someone else needs her to be strong, Aang's relationship to his responsibilities both internally within himself and externally with how the village sees him and what it expects of him, the exasperated teenager and secretly amused parent dynamic between Zuko and Iroh switching flawlessly into a fighting team, then flawlessly back) -Everyone feels in character (optimistic sweetheart Aang, practical protective Sokka, caring Katara, super chill yet super skilled Iroh, Zuko just so fed up with everything) -The humour was downplayed this episode but the few jokes that were there were genuinely funny. Sokka getting hit with the acorn in particular. I'm thinking that there must have been a rule in the writing room that it's not a proper Avatar episode unless Sokka gets to be the butt of the joke at least once. -Zuko and Iroh finally getting fleshed out a bit. I feel like this is the first episode where Zuko hasn't come off as an asshole. -Worldbuilding (this is the first time the avatar's done his job as per the job description) -How it's supposed to be the first half of a two part episode but it doesn't feel like set up at all. It's a self-contained story with actual stakes, a conclusion that matters, lessons learned all around, and ALSO set up for next episode.
Once I had gotten a good look at firebending in the Southern Air Temple episode I started wondering how the fire nation hadn't completely decimated all their enemies. After I saw Bumi's bending skills I understood how the earth kingdom had resisted the fire nation for a century, but Bumi really was the exception to the rule, wasn't he? If these earth kingdom soldiers are typical of the earth kingdom army, I'm going to have to switch back to my original opinion and wonder why the fire nation didn't win the war 85 years ago. Because these guys are bad. They are surrounded by their element. Their prisoner is standing on their element. Just make the ground grab his feet! He'll be a sitting duck and they'll be able to do whatever they want to him. Better yet, just bury him completely. Or make handcuffs out of rock instead of metal. That being said, the soldiers' stupidity set up a really cool fight scene. How did Zuko not break his foot with that kick?
Everything is woven together so well in this episode. Almost nothing feels contrived - you can't tell me that Zuko didn't wait behind a bush somewhere so he could time his rescue of Iroh to have maximum drama. But otherwise this episode feels organic - like we were actually watching a couple of days in the life of these people.
I really liked this one.

good afternoon i bring with me a (slightly rough) wip of zuko getting to see his daughter for the first time after she's born <3
(featuring some zuko teasing bc the gaang can't help it even at his daughter's birth, and sokka also getting to hold her!!)
—
She’s born in the middle of a scorching summer, under the gaze of a shining moon and on a bed covered in caribou-hare pelts.
Zuko knows when she’s arrived; he’s already crossed the length of the reception room by the time the clamor behind the separating screen abruptly cuts into a breathless silence, and his heart beats in expectation when Suki pokes her head out. She’s exhausted, she’s excited, and she’s dragging him in before he can even fathom any kind of thought.
He comes in just as the midwife finishes in clearing her nose and mouth, to reveal a tiny face and the full sound of his daughter’s fair wail.
Daughter.
Zuko stumbles.
A bubble of absolute glee spills from his mouth as he’s pushed into a chair next to the bed because, from here, he has an even better view. Poking out above her little arm is a head covered in a wet smattering of dark hair and already full eyebrows, with impossibly round cheeks showing off pouting lips and red gums while she cries. She’s loud, she’s announcing her presence, she’s so small.
Zuko chokes on an exhilarated gasp. That’s his daughter.
He reaches out, then falters. As he watches her settle into the soothing warmth of bare skin, all he wants is to fall forward to her, to tuck her into him and rest his hand on her small back to feel how she lifts the entirety of her body as he cries and breathesin her first moments. But he’s not sure who he can touch or even what he can touch on the bed, and he instead throws an absentmindedly desperate hand out to stop himself from grabbing at the furs as he works to remember how to properly take in air.
Someone grabs it—Sokka, he can tell by the calluses on his fingers—and directs it down. Instantly, instinctively, Zuko splays his fingers to cradle her head and strokes his thumb over his daughter’s ear.
His hand curls perfectly around her, and he chokes on another exhilarated sob.
“Katara—”
“She’s beautiful,” Katara immediately returns. Her eyes flit up to Zuko’s, just for a moment, before sliding back down to the baby resting on her stomach. She’s holding a tiny fist in her own hand, running tired fingers up and down a forearm, and she can’t look away either. She’s crying, Zuko realizes, tears just like his own, and she shakes out little relieved sniffles when he and Sokka quickly clasp her heaving shoulders. Katara’s head falls back to the pillows—from the exhaustion, from the relief of their touch, from those strong, healthy cries—and her hand joins Zuko’s on his daughter’s head as she lets out a breathless laugh. “Oh wow, she’s really perfect, Zuko.”
“Thank you,” he gasps out, and then no other words come. His face is a reservoir of open gratitude even when he can’t get anything else out, he knows Katara understands him when she lightly runs a thumb against his hand in response to his spasming grip on her shoulder.
Thank you.
Aang is let in shortly after, buzzing out of his body as he rushes to Katara’s side, with Azula jumping at the chance to barrel inside too. He’s been through this before with Bumi, but his hands still shake slightly as he cups her face and leans down to kiss her forehead with a long, deep inhale. Katara reaches out a free hand to hold onto him, and just smiles at the comfort of his happiness.
Her other hand is still in Zuko’s grasp. He hasn’t been able to bring himself to let go just yet, even after moving to the other side of the bed so that his good ear could better pick up her murmuring, or after her careful transfer of his daughter into his his bare arms, and now together they hold onto an exposed arm left out of the blanket.
Snatches of conversation happen around him, slight jostling occurs as everyone works on the after care, but Zuko is captivated only by the bundle in his arms. Their eyes are locked—she looks up at Zuko, and he stares right back. When Katara has to let go, he takes over to admire his daughter with his thumb, tracing it across her plump jawline, smoothing down the soft hair on her head and over her eyebrows.
Toward the end of the pregnancy, when Aang and Katara came to stay at the palace to prepare, Zuko used to sometimes stare at her. It was hard, trying to imagine what a child between them would look like, and a niggling thought that circled in the back of his mind—quietly, in a determined attempt to not let it fester too much—had him wishing, hoping that his daughter would have more of Katara in her than him. Beyond possibly gold-tinted eyes, what worth did his ancestry have to offer in the face of so much goodness from Katara’s?
(He got scolded for ruminating over this, then given an extremely long hug, and then scolded again for his incessant doting over a Katara who did not need to be doted over, much to Aang’s cackling amusement and Zuko’s embarrassed chagrin.)
But his daughter looks so much like him, and in such a breathtakingly sweet way that leaves him stunned. He can see the small flicks of her eyes moving as they roam over his face; they’re so light in color, tawny almost like how Azula’s were when she was born, and he wonders if they’ll be bright like his or darken into a strong amber like Uncle’s. She also has his nose, a wide little thing that he can’t help but bop a finger against, and her cheeks may be big but Zuko thinks she has his chin.
“It’s crazy how alert she already is,” Aang says, smiling as he peeks down at her across the bed. “I hope her cries get louder though, she needs those firebender lungs so she can shout like you can, Zuko.”
“Don’t do that to me,” Azula instantly scoffs, taking her place next to her brother, then smirks at his lukewarm glare. “I can only handle one loudmouth at a time, and Zuzu is plenty already.”
“Hey—”
Sokka snorts, and responds faster than Zuko can continue. “Well, when she’s right, she’s right.”
Suki overtakes their snickering with a bright burst of laughter, and his daughter’s head rolls toward the noise. “I thought blessings for babies by airbenders were supposed to be good-natured?”
“Oh, sure,” Aang laughs as he takes a cool cloth from her to wipe at Katara’s neck. “She will have a loving heart, an inquisitive mind, and a steadfast head on her shoulders that will push her through anything she sets herself to achieve. But I also hope she gets a set of good strong lungs, just so Zuko can see what we’ve put up with over the years.”
“Can you all be nice to me for five seconds,” Zuko grumps lightly. “I’m literally holding my child right now.”
“I think Aang’s gonna be right too,” Sokka happily jumps back in, dropping a heavy hand on Zuko’s shoulder as he leans over him to coo into her space. “She’s already got his frown.”
“Sokka!” Katara chides, but her laughter is still the loudest above everyone else’s at the falsely disgruntled scowl they receive—which is indeed replicated perfectly on that little face. “You know you can’t say things like that, or she’s going to end up looking like you!”
Sokka just chuckles, and the happy sound thrums through Zuko’s nerves. He’s pulled back already, giving him room to curl around his daughter like she’ll be able to protect him from the teasing—and Zuko forcibly swallows down the heavy desire to pull him back in.
“If that happens, it’ll only be because we look like, Katara.”
“Alright, move over punks!” Toph is as gleefully brash as ever when she steps into room with Lin on her hip and Iroh following close behind her, but Zuko can see the excitement lighting up her face as she beelines over. “Stop hogging the kid!”
Suki makes quick work to take Lin from her while Aang moves to pull Bumi from Iroh’s arms, and the four of them maneuver themselves onto the bed around Katara. She grouses lightly, but still looks incredibly contented to now have her son within arm’s reach. Iroh moves to take up residence on Zuko’s free side next to Sokka, and rests his hand on Zuko’s other shoulder.
“Oh, nephew,” he breathes out in deep admiration, and Zuko can feel his elation all the way down to his bones. “What a remarkable little beauty you have there.”
“Do you want to hold her?” he asks, after Iroh has showered Katara with a slew of his own sincere appreciation. Katara shies a little at the praise, but her smile remains firm even as her eyes droop slightly, and Zuko has a feeling Aang may soon kick them all out into another room to let her sleep.
Iroh’s steady joy though is infectious, and the room alights with an even more blanketing warmth from it. He reaches out eagerly to gingerly take her into his arms, and his eyes shine as he coos down at his granddaughter.
“Welcome to the world, little one,” Iroh hums, “There are great things in store for you here, just you wait and see.”
Azula gets to hold her next. Not for as long as their uncle, too nervous to hold something so tiny yet also noticeably too unwilling to give her up, and Zuko feels his eyes start to prick as sheer happiness crashes over him at the sight.
Sokka is the third one, composure fully cracked and delighted tears flowing as he wetly hiccups between stunned laughter.
“What an awesome little kid,” he says, his watery grin is as wide as his eyes. He then carefully cradles one of her hands into his palm, and welcomes her with a gentle handshake.
“Hello, Izumi,” he murmurs, and Zuko’s heart sings. “It’s so good to finally see you.”
Zuko doesn’t have anything to say in response, burstingly overwhelmed.
Instead, he quietly marvels at how well Izumi fits into his arms as he brushes a finger over one of her eyebrows. He glances up, to commit to memory the full picture of them together—their eyes catch, and his breath hitches at the deep adoration he spies in those blue eyes.
Sokka shakes himself a beat later, and looks back down at Izumi with a blazing grin.
“Man, you really do look just like your dad, don’t you, little princess?”
She does, but she undeniably has pieces of Katara in her too. Her complexion is slightly darker, and there’s already a slight wave to her hair that Zuko idly traces in amazement. He’s somewhat certain she has Katara’s lips too, and she hasn’t smiled yet but the thought that she could also end up with that same spirited smile makes his chest ache in private joy. It’s thrilling, the notion that even when his friend isn’t around, Zuko will still be able to see her signature grin light up the Fire Nation.
Zuko glances back up while Sokka continues to look down at his daughter.
He allows himself a moment to stare.
And carefully, very carefully, he thinks about how Katara and Sokka have the same smile.

What Subjects I Think LOK Characters Would Teach:
Lin: PE, obviously. Dating Kya and all the kids are happy cause there’s a noticeable shift in Lin’s mood once they start dating. She no longer forces kids to run a mile every day and instead does it once a week now, so the kids are hoping her and Kya stay together. She also coaches Golf and Lacrosse.
Kya: Waffled between MILF Math teacher, MILF Science teacher, and hippy/chill Music teacher, but decided on MILF Science Teacher. Getting strong Biology vibes. Very fun labs and not strict at all. Her and Zhu-Li are super passionate about leading the Science Bowl team. Seeing these young people be so passionate about STEM and helping their fellow teammates makes her hopeful for this young generation.
Tenzin: He kinda gives math teacher vibes, but a large part of his character in the show is about him keeping his history alive, and teaching others abut learning and respecting history, so I feel like he’s a History teacher. His class is a lot of notetaking but he plays quiet music and does a five minute meditation in the middle of class to encourage kids to relax, so students really like him and actually listen to him. Also, he’s kind of gullible so they make up fake trends to tell him. He once spent a week addressing people as “brony” cause students told him thats what people say now instead of bro. Kids got a good laugh out of that one. Him and Pema are another favorite teacher couple.
Bumi II: Def gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes. Very interesting and informative conversations in his class, but things get off topic very quickly. Whenever kids ask about Bum-Ju, he gets distracted and will talk the entire rest of the period about what to dress Bum-Ju up as for Halloween. Probably plays a lot of videos. And students don’t worry about if they read the books Bumi II assigns cause they don’t think he’s even read the books he assigns. When having discussions about the books in class, sometimes kids will make up stuff and say it’s in the book and for the most part, Bumi II goes along with it cause he doesn’t know what actually happens in the books.
Varrick: Also gives off eccentric/unhinged English teacher vibes, but because he’s a businessman/war profiteer, I’m gonna have to say he teaches Econ and gives students lots of unsolicited financial advice. Also supervises the Engineering and Robotics Club.
Zhu-Li: Science teacher, probably Chemistry. She’s very good at explaining and getting kids to follow her instructions. Not only is she a co-supervisor for the Science Bowl team, she helps Varrick run Engineering and Robotics Club, cause if it were only Varrick running it, no kids would come. His intensity and eccentricity scares them.
Iroh II: He’s definitely the young Math teacher everyone has a crush on. Very chill and doesn’t give a lot of homework. Kids love when he shows pictures of his dog to the class and eventually he brings in the dog cause admin think the dog is too cute to say no to.
Tonraq: Resident DILF History teacher. Kind of a hardass but also a nice dude so most everyone passes his class. Probably that History teacher that is also a football coach, so during fall he doesn’t give a FUCK about whether anyone actually turns anything in. Him and Senna is the teacher couple that seems like opposites but actually are pretty similar and balance each other out.
Senna: That English teacher that every mentally ill student becomes emotionally attached to. You know what I’m talking about. She’s so sweet, funny, and chill so all the kids love her class. Tries to include memes in her presentations to seem “with it” but they’re like, doge memes from 2014. But the kids appreciate the effort.
Pema: Definitely the sweet English teacher that occasionally has a mental breakdown when the students test her patience. Otherwise very chill. Also teaches the Childhood Education and Development class. Her, Senna, and Bumi II run the school newspaper.
Bataar: Drafting. Pretty chill, very skilled, and def smokes on the weekend. Also, him and Suyin are that teacher couple that everyone likes.
Suyin: Dance. Super nice and always has like to of those smelly plug in things going so her room smells good and has a “good vibe that evokes emotion”. Always plays EDM or weird 80s rock to get the kids moving. She runs the school dance team. When Bataar has prep period, he sometimes drops in to see Su dance, cause she’s mesmerizing to watch. All the kids think that, coupled with the fact that they eat lunch together every day, makes them the cutest couple ever.
Amon: Drama. He loves directing kids on how to totally live a role. If you can imagine, he sometimes gets a little overdramatic about drama, forgetting that these are just highschool kids, not Oscar winners, but his passion makes the class more enjoyable. Runs Drama Club with Tarrlok.
Tarrlok: Probably Physics. A difficult class, but he’s pretty good at explaining so most kids don’t struggle too much. His main focus is running student government, which he takes pretty seriously. Sometimes too seriously.
Unalaq: Teaches Psychology. The most pretentious teacher on campus. It’s literally so bad, that even other teachers avoid him. Amon abandoned his coffee still being brewed in the machine in the staff room cause Unalaq walked in and he didn’t want to be in a room with Unalaq again after he said that Amon’s outfit “looked like something stolen from the lost and found of a funeral home”. Unalaq sees it as “telling it like it is”.
Zaheer: Government and Politics. Tries to teach the class very well but also injects his own opinion into teaching a lot. The students find him scary but some also kinda think he’s hot. Also does Yearbook. Him and Senna run Mock Trial. Replaced the old Government and Politics teacher Hou-Ting after she retired. She was that one old teacher that made it a hobby to harrass students and constantly reminisced about when you could smack students.
P’Li: Math teacher. Much scarier than Zaheer. Plays her trash ass music very loudly while the kids work. Def yells at kids. She’s kind of funny when she’s in a good mood tho, and when she roasts kids it’s really funny cause it’s usually dead on. Her and Zaheer are those teachers that flirt a lot and you know they’re sleeping together.
Ming-Hua: Art. Loves drawing and, you guessed it, watercolor painting. Very chill and plays soft music but lets you listen to your own music. Super sarcastic and all the students eat it up. Literally a universal favorite. She runs Art Club and Fashion Club.
Ghazan: Guitar. Pretty cool teacher that definitely has some weird stories. All the students know he has a crush on Ming-Hua cause they flirt constantly, but he denies it. Runs E-Sports Club. Idk why I think that, it just feels right. Him and Ming-Hua are also the kinds of teachers kids become emotionally attached to.
Kuvira: Government and Politics also. Seems calm and reasonable, but is a total ass. Makes kids give up their phones, allows almost no talking, gives out more detentions a week than most teachers do in one year, and doesn’t allow for much discussion. Everyone wants her class cause she’s hot but most drop within the first week, to the point that counselors have to say no to some kids so they don’t have to get rid of the class altogether.
Bataar Jr.: Computer Lit teacher. None of the students respect him so they’ll play Minecraft the whole time or play inappropriate videos really loud. Doesn’t really put much effort into teaching, which for some kids is a dream, but for others is an annoyance. Him and Kuvira are the teacher couple that makes everyone say “wtf”. Literally no one knows why they’re together.
Izumi: Secretary/Attendance. Pretty much remembers everything and is super organized. She is the glue that holds the school together. Most students don’t know her name though cause she’s super quiet and works mostly behind the scenes. Whenever Zuko sends anyone her way though he reminds them of her name and to say thank you cause he recognizes how hard his daughter works to keep everything running smoothly. Izumi catches on to this and always manages to thank her dad with a nice tea and a hug.
Toph: Vice Principal. Scary as fuck. Doesn’t ever call kids’ parents cause she efficiently scares the shit out of every kid, so they never do whatever bad thing they were doing again. When she has to work dances, Katara always tries to get her to dance with her. She resists every time, but she always gives eventually. She’s happy to though, cause although she’ll never say it out loud, seeing Katara this happy at her old age warms her heart.
Katara: Health Clerk. Very sweet and everybody loves her. Sometimes kids pretend to feel sick just to talk to her. She doesn’t mind though cause a kid that has a tummy ache and a kid that needs to talk are both kids that need help, and she’s happy to offer whatever support she can. She also always offers to supervise dances when the school has them and always manages to bust a move.
Zuko: Counselor. Wants to be to students what his uncle was to him. Aang and Sokka were counselors too, some years ago. And while they could give some good nuggets of advice and offered the kids amazing support, they also would totally fuck up student’s schedules by accident cause those numbskulls were exactly that- numbskulls. So usually Zuko would have to fix that. He misses fixing their messes and, more importantly, he misses them (they aren’t dead, just retired). He hopes to retire soon too, cause he’s getting too old for this, but he secretly doesn’t want to retire just yet cause working at school allows him to see and spend time with Izumi. Since they’re both working, it’s not like they have too much time together, but even just her popping into his office to bring him tea or check in on how he’s doing that day brings a smile to his face that doesn’t leave for the rest of the day.
Raiko: Principal. After Toph stepped down cause she’s “too old for this shit” (her words), Raiko stepped in. The students aren’t a fan of him but he’s not terrible. And since Toph is still Vice Principal, she keeps him in check.

The Moon and the Sun (Zuko x Reader) part 4
Hey guys!! I am beyond thankful for all of the love I have been getting on this series like y'all really are the best!! If you want to be on the taglist just ask, requests are open (and I am going to try to work on some tomorrow so if you have any now is the time to send them in), and other than that hope you enjoy!!
Part 1 Part 3 Part 5
Masterlist
“So, you’ve never had an actual Master?” Katara asked you as the two of you were sitting towards the back of Appa’s saddle.
“Technically no, but I did watch Zuko and Azula’s training so in a way I had a master. And Zuko would go over some of the techniques with me that he had learned, and I applied them to my bending. That’s why my bending style is so different from yours is because I learned from scrolls and fire benders.” You said as you looked over at all of clouds that were passing by. “But once he was banished, Iroh was able to show me some techniques that he learned when he was studying water bending.”
“He studied water bending?” She asked, and you nodded as you looked away from the clouds and back to her to see a confused look on her face.
“Yeah, Iroh studied other bending techniques and was even able to come up with a way to deflect lightening from studying water bending since a lot of water bending is taking what your opponent used against you and turning it back on them.” You said with a small smile as you remembered sitting on the deck of the ship and listening to Iroh talk about all that he had learned after you begged him to tell you everything he knew about the Water tribes and water bending.
“That’s amazing.” Katara said and you just nodded before you looked over at Sokka who was sharpening his blade and reached your foot out to bump his. He looked over at you and raised an eyebrow to show that you had his attention.
“I know some hand to hand stuff too if you want to spar sometime, and I know how to use a sword.” You said and he just let out a laugh as he looked at you. You raised an eyebrow at him after glancing to Katara, who just shrugged. “What?”
“I’m sorry I just can’t imagine you using a sword, especially when you have your bending.” He said as he looked at you amused and almost confused.
“Well there won’t always be water around, and I wanted to be able to protect myself if there wasn’t.” You said before you noticed that the clouds were starting rise, meaning that you were going down. You looked at Sokka and Katara for a moment as they noticed it as well, and before you could ask Sokka was standing up and heading to the front of the saddle.
“Hey, you taking us down for a reason?” Sokka asked Aang as he leaned over the edge of the saddle to look at him. “Aang, why are we going down?”
“What?” Aang asked and you looked over at Katara before you stood up. “I didn’t even notice.”
“Are you noticing now?” Sokka asked as you walked over to him and looked to see that you were flying over a swamp.
“Is something wrong?” Katara asked as she walked over to where you and Sokka were already standing and looking at Aang.
“I know this is gonna sound weird, but I think the swamp is calling to me.” Aang said and as you looked at the swamp a shiver went down your spine.
“Is it telling you where we can get something to eat?” Sokka asked and you hit him in the side with your elbow as you sent him a glare.
“Don’t be mean.” You said before wrapping your arms around your torso and looking back to Aang, the shiver was making you feel uneasy about everything.
“No, I-I think it wants us to land there.” Aang said and you looked over at Katara, confusion was written all over her face as she looked at Aang.
“No offense to the swamp, but I don’t see any land there to land on.” Sokka said as he put his hands up in the air.
“I don’t know. Bumi said to learn earth bending, I would have to wait and listen. And now I’m actually hearing the earth. Do you want me to ignore it?” Aang asked and all of you looked over the edge of the saddle at the swamp that was below.
“Yes.” Sokka said.
“I don’t know. There’s something ominous about that place.” Katara said as she continued to look down at the swamp.
“It just doesn’t seem like it would be very safe, we don’t know who or what is down there.” You said as you glanced up at Aang. Momo and Appa both started to make noises and you all stood up all the way and turned back towards Aang and stepped away from the edge.
“See? Even Appa and Momo don’t like it here.” Sokka said and you just nodded in agreement as you looked back at the Swamp.
“Okay, since everyone feels so strongly about this, bye swamp.” Aang said before he lifted Appa’s reigns. “Yip, yip.” “You better throw in an extra yip. We gotta move.” Sokka said and you turned to look back at him only to see a tornado coming right at you all. You turned back around to look at Aang as he tried to get Appa to go faster but it was no use, the tornado was practically on top of you. You heard Sokka scream and turned as he was being pulled out off of Appa and Katara grabbed his hand.
“Y/N!” Katara yelled as she lost her footing and went out of the saddle along with Sokka. You quickly grabbed her hand and brought water out of your pouch to freeze your feet to the saddle. You grabbed onto Katara’s hand with both of your hands as you tried to keep her and Sokka from being sucked into the tornado.
“Aang I don’t know how much longer I can hold them!” You yelled as you were struggling to get a grip on her hand. Aang started to bend the air around you to keep you all safe from the tornado as it engulfed you. Katara and Sokka fell back onto the saddle and you unfroze your water and brought the water back to your pouch as you looked at Aang. He was struggling to keep the sphere of air around all of you and before long he lost control of it.
“Y/N!” Sokka yelled and tried to grab your hand as you were pulled off of the saddle. You let out a scream as you were sent towards the swamp.
When you came to you were tangled up in vines and hanging above the water. You quickly used the water from your pouch to cut the vines but regretted it once you were sent to the ground and landed in the water.
“Ew.” You said as you sat up in the water and looked around to see nothing but water, vines, and trees. You looked up to see that the sun was starting to come up through the trees, and you didn’t know how long you had been out, but you assumed it was only the next day. You slowly stood up and started to walk around, trying to find the others but after walking around and calling for them for at least an hour you let out a groan and sat on one of the roots. You put your head in your hands as you tried to think of what to do. You were alone in a swamp, miles away from any town, and all you had was a pouch of water. You were so lost in your thoughts of what you were going to do that you almost missed someone calling you.
“Y/N?” A woman said and you sat up, looking around trying to find where the voice was coming from.
“Hello?” You said as you stood up and started to look around but all you seen was trees and water, you were alone. “Great, now I’m hearing things.” “Y/N!” A man yelled, and you frantically looked around trying to find where the voice was coming from. But once again you didn’t see anything, and you were starting to think that maybe you were going crazy or had hit you head on the way down. “My daughter, you were taken from us.” “Where are you?” You yelled as you started to look around again, but like before it was just a voice. “Who are you?”
“My little girl, we couldn’t save you.” A woman’s voice said again, you didn’t recognize the voice, but they were talking as if you were their child, could it be your real parents? No, you were going crazy. “I wish we could have watched you grow up.”
“Where are you?” You asked as you continued to look around but it was just water, and the voice sounded as if it was coming from all around you so you didn’t know where to even look.
“Come home my daughter, come home.” The man said again, but in a quiet almost somber voice.
“Show yourself!” You yelled as you brought water to your hands and got into a fighting stance. You turned around looking in every direction and when you didn’t see or hear anything else you dropped the water to the ground as you lowered your hands. You closed your eyes as you took in a deep breath. “It isn’t real, it’s all in my head.”
“But it is real.” You heard another voice say but you knew this voice, it was Zuko. You immediately opened your eyes to see he was standing in front of you, you slowly took your hands off of your ears as you looked at him in shock.
“How are you here?” You asked as you just looked at him, trying to figure out how he was here. You immediately noticed that he wasn’t in his normal Fire Nation clothes, but he was wearing Earth Kingdom clothes. After you looked at his clothes you looked at his face and your eyes went straight to his hair, his ponytail was gone but the rest of his hair was starting to grow again. You looked away from his hair and back to his face as you knitted your eyebrows together in confusion. “What happened?”
“You betrayed me.” He said in an angry tone and you seen him clinching his fists.
“I had to, if I wouldn’t have then the moon would be lost forever.” You said as you looked at him. “I’m sorry but I did what I had to do.”
“You betrayed me Y/N.” He said as he glared at you, the anger and pain in his eyes was all it took for you to feel your heart break. “You said you’d always be on my side.”
“I wanted to be on your side, I still want to be. But I can’t anymore after what happened at the North, after what Zhao did to you.” You said as you looked down at the ground. “I wanted to come back after I left but when I looked back at the ship, I was too late.”
“You wouldn’t have come back!” He yelled this time and before you could say anything he went up in flames. “You betrayed me!”
“Zuko!” You yelled as you rushed over to him but when you reached him he was gone. All that was there was a tree stump and you immediately fell to your knees as you heard the two voices from earlier start to come back. You put your hands over your ears, trying to block it all out, but it was too much. You started to cry as you heard the voices repeat everything they said earlier, that you were taken from them, they couldn’t save you, to come home, and Zuko saying that you betrayed him.
You felt a hand on your shoulder and you let out a scream as you sent a wave of water behind you before quickly getting to your feet and getting ready to fight whoever it was, but as you turned you seen Sokka, Katara, and Aang. Katara and Aang had stopped the wave with one move of their hand but Sokka was sent back into the water with a yell.
“Are you real?” You asked as you looked at them cautiously.
“Are we real? Is that some kind of joke?” Sokka said in a sarcastic voice as he stood up from the water and let out a groan. “I don’t see why I’m always the one who gets soaked when you guys use water.”
“You are real.” You said and a smile came to your face as you pulled them all into a hug.
“Where were you? We looked all over for you yesterday.” Aang said once you all pulled away from the hug.
“I got stuck in the vines and I got knocked out on the way down, I’ve been around here the whole time though, I didn’t want to get too far away.” You said before you noticed Appa, Momo, and a few guys standing behind them. “You made some friends?” “Actually he attacked us with a vine monster and they tried to eat Appa and Momo but now we’re friends.” Aang said with a smile on his face and you just nodded before looking over at Sokka who just shrugged.
“They’re going to let us stay the night and feed us so who am I to complain.” He said before turning around and walking back towards the group of people.
You learned on the way back to their camp that they were water benders, and they were able to bend plants. You of course were fascinated by this and had asked if they could show you.
“You’re a natural.” Huu said with a smile as you started to move the vine around. A smile came to your face as you looked at the vine, the first thought that came to your mind was how you wished you could show Zuko and Iroh, you knew that Zuko would be impressed and Iroh would be just as fascinated by the idea as you were. You pushed the thought of them from your head as you started to think of what you had seen earlier in the swamp.
“Thank you for teaching me Huu.” You said with a smile as you continued to bend the vine around.
“You’re welcome.” He said before he started walking back over to the group, but you chose to stay where you were. Everyone was around the fire talking and eating but you didn’t really have that much of an appetite, so you chose to work on bending the vines.
“Hey, can we talk?” Katara said as she walked up to you, drawing your attention away from the vines.
“Of course.” You said as you put the vines down and sat down, patting the spot beside you for her to sit. Once she was sat down you could see the worry all over her face as she looked at the ground, so you bumped your shoulder into hers to get her attention. “What’s wrong?” “I seen my mom earlier, it turned out to just me a tree stump, but it did look like her for a moment. Sokka seen Yue and Aang seen a girl laughing and running around too.” She said as she let out a sigh. When she said that you felt relieved in a way because now you knew that you weren’t the only one who had seen things. “But when I seen her I just got so happy, I really thought that it was her. And I ran over to her and when I realized that it wasn’t real, I just realized how much I really miss her.”
“I understand, it’s hard to lose someone you care about and it’s even harder when you want to believe they’re still alive. That little bit of hope can do more damage than anything.” You said as you gave her a small smile before looking at your hands. “I seen Zuko, he said that I betrayed him, and I also heard a man and woman calling for me and telling me how I was taken from them and telling me to come home, I think it was my parents.”
“Did you see them?” She asked, and you shook your head as you kept your eyes on your hands.
“I’ve always wondered if they were still alive, the feeling of not knowing and having that little bit of hope hurts so much. And I want to believe everything my dad told me was true but part of me wonders how he really found me, and if he took me instead of saved me.” You said, and you looked up to see that Katara was already looking at you, and you could tell that she was trying to think of something to say. “And I want to find out the truth, but I don’t know where to start. Sokka said that since my name is the name my real parents gave me that it could help but going off of a name is a long-shot because I’m sure so many people have lost their kids to the fire nation.”
“Well it’s a start at least.” She said as she gave you a reassuring smile before your attention was caught by Sokka who was now screaming over something he had eaten. Katara stood up and offered you a hand. “Come on, you need to eat, and I think we should check on Sokka.”

izumi’s birthday pt 1: bad memories
AN: I had to split Izumi’s birthday up a bit. trying to fit it all in one chapter would have been just stupidly long. I will say this starts sad, and the second chapter is also sad, though more angsty than sad, but part three will be much happier and have a good resolution.
TW: character death in childbirth (in past, but mentioned), noblewomen being sucky to Izumi.
Izumi was never particularly excited to celebrate her birthday. It was a day of mixed emotions knowing that while her family celebrated her coming into this world, they were reminded of the sharp pang of losing her mother on that day as well. Nonetheless, her grandfather Iroh had insisted on throwing a party to celebrate her 17th birthday. Nobles from the outlying islands, diplomats from the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes, and of course her father’s friends and their families who were essentially her extended family. The palace, usually quiet and peaceful (as she and her father preferred) was bustling with guests. Her father had been so busy greeting guests and addressing some Republic City business with Sokka and Aang that she had barely seen him that day. So, she decided to take a walk to his office after she knew he had finished meeting with Sokka and Avatar Aang.
As she walked down the hallway, she overheard two of the noblewomen, a governor’s wife and her daughter, visiting for her birthday festivities talking with each other in the portrait gallery.
“I just hope she won’t be like her forefathers, with the Fire Lady curse,” the mother says.
“Fire Lady curse?” the daughter questions.
“Haven’t you noticed, dear, that all of the Fire Ladies who gave birth to bad Fire Lords have died in childbirth,” the mother answers. “Fire Lord Sozin’s mother died when he was born, as did Azulon’s. Lady Ilah died when she gave birth to Ozai. General Iroh’s wife died when Prince Lu Ten came. Princess Ursa barely made it through Princess Azula’s birth, and of course you know that Lady Mai died when the Crown Princess was born.”
“It seems the spirits had it out for the Fire Ladies that brought bad men into the world,” the daughter replies.
“Indeed,” the mother says “For our sake, let’s pray it’s not an omen about our next Fire Lord.”
Izumi’s breath hitches. The mother turns and sees her. Izumi recognizes her as Lady Niko and her daughter Ichika.
“Your highness, I hope you are well,” Lady Niko says with a bow. Izumi clenches her fists. What an asshole she thinks to herself.
“Good evening,” she says bitterly.
“We were just off to retire,” Lady Niko states. If she has any suspicion that Izumi overheard their conversation, she does not show it. Izumi says nothing. “Well, good evening then.” The women bow again before walking down the hallway.
Izumi is left alone in the portrait gallery. Her father had the portraits of the imperial Fire Lords removed long ago, before she was born. Instead, they were replaced with paintings of more favorable parts of Fire Nation history. There was one of Avatar Roku, one of her grandfather taking back Ba Sing Se, of her father redirecting lightning, and most recently of her Aunt Azula discovering the true nature of fire and being gifted a dragon egg. Even still, there were not enough new paintings to replace the old, and black curtains hung in their place.
Izumi finds herself reaching out to touch the heavy dark fabric and remembers the first time asking about them when she was maybe 8 years old.
"Why are there dark curtains on the walls in the portrait gallery?” Izumi had asked at dinner
“There used to be paintings there, but I had them taken down,” Zuko explained.
“Why were they taken down?” Izumi asked.
“They were of bad men, and I did not want them on display,” Zuko explained. “I didn’t need the reminder of their poor examples. And I did not need them setting an example for you to aspire to,” he answered.
“Well, I will not be bad. Girls are not bad like boys are,” Izumi said cheerfully.
“Girls can be bad, Izumi,” Azula says.
“But I’m a girl and I’m not bad. And so are Aunt Kiyi, and Aunt Katara. They are all very nice,” Izumi states, somewhat defensively. “You are not bad.”
“I used to be bad, very bad,” Azula responds.
Zuko looks at her across the table. “You don’t have to now-”
“She’s going to have to know sooner or later” Azula cuts him off. Azula didn’t talk much about her past, and for Izumi, Azula had always been one to chastise her for being mean. Izumi could not imagine Azula as anything other her stern and wise aunt.
Azula and Zuko are having a conversation with just looks, like only people with secrets can. Izumi looks between the two of them. “Know what?”
“Izumi, I know we have not taught you much about the war yet, but during the war, I was a bad person,” Azula starts. “I hunted down your father and grandfather to try to bring them back to the Fire Nation as prisoners, I chased Bumi and Kya’s mom and dad, Sokka, and Toph across the earth kingdom, I burned Uncle, I put Suki in prison, I tried to drill a whole in the walls of Ba Sing Se, then I actually took over Ba Sing Se, I killed the Avatar, well briefly, I had your mom and Ty Lee locked in the Boiling Rock, and then when my dad tried to take over the world and told me I could be Fire Lord, I tried to kill Zuko and your Aunt Katara when they tried to stop me. Even before the war, I was never nice,” Azula finishes. She sighs “Don’t believe anything is the way it is about you because you’re a girl, Izumi. Anyone is capable of destruction.”
Izumi is quiet. She looks at her aunt, her fire bending teacher, her fiercest protector, the woman who walks her home from school every day, who brushes her hair every morning, who tucks her in at night when her dad has too much paperwork to do, who is the closet thing this motherless child has to a mother. She cannot reconcile Azula’s confession.
“Dad is that true?” Izumi asks.
“Izumi, where else would he have gotten the scar on his chest? That was from when I tried to kill him,” Azula responds before Zuko can.
Izumi does not want to believe these things about Azula. “Well, if you were so bad, then how did the family pass the People’s Approval every year?”
“We did not have People’s Approval before me. That was something I created,” Zuko explains.
“So there used to just be uncontrollably bad Fire Lords and Fire Families?”
“Yes” Azula and Zuko say in unison.
“But we’re different, we learned from their misdeeds,” Zuko finishes. Izumi pulls her hand back from dark velvet. A door opening down the hall pulls her from her thoughts, and she starts towards her father’s office. As she walks down the hallway, she cannot shake the thought that she might be predestined for destruction.
“Is he with anyone?” She asks the guard at the door when she arrives.
“No, your highness. Master Katara, Councilman Sokka, and Avatar Aang just left. Would you like me to announce you?”
“Thank you, but no need. It’s just me,” she tells him.
“Of course, your highness,” he says with a polite nod.
When she walks in her father is staring, with a wistful but melancholic look, at a small ink portrait of himself and Mai that was commissioned shortly after they were married. Her entrance pulls him from whatever thought or memory he was lost in. The thought of him sitting in here alone and thinking of her mother only augments her anger and unease, and it quickly settles in her as sadness.
“Hey, turtleduck,” he says softly and with a smile when he sees her.
“Hi,” she replies, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Sorry, I missed dinner. Sokka, Aang, and I were working on something. And then Katara came in here to tell us off for working too late.”
“That’s ok,” she says, trying to cover the sadness in her tone but Zuko notices.
“What’s wrong, turtleduck?” he says walking over to her.
“I’m almost 17, don’t you think I’m a little old for that?”
“I don’t care how old you are, you’ll always be my little turtleduck.”
Izumi smiles softly. Zuko was sweet father. “You were looking at that painting of mom when I walked in.”
“I was, yes.” He pauses, "I was thinking about what I would tell her about you if I could.”
“What would you tell her?” a few tears well up in Izumi’s eyes, and she tries hard to keep them in.
“Well, I think she’d be happy to know you look just like her,” he starts. “And that you like to read and learn, and there’s nothing that you can’t teach yourself how to do. She’d be amazed that you can make your Aunt Azula laugh. And,” he says tipping her chin up so that she has to look into his eyes, “she’d want me to tell you that you could confide in your father with anything just like she did.”
“I don’t want to celebrate my birthday,” she whispers. A tear rolls down her cheek, and Zuko wipes it away.
“Why not?”
“It makes me feel guilty,” she barely manages to get out. She leans forward, and Zuko pulls her into an embrace.
“Zumi, sweetheart, we’ve talked about this. You have nothing to feel guilty about.”
“What if I just haven’t done the thing I’ll feel guilty about yet?” she strains.
“What’s that supposed to mean, Zumi?”
She doesn’t want to talk about what the noblewomen were discussing in the portrait gallery, and she diverts from her last question.
“I took your wife from you. You’ve been lonely for a long time because I came into the world.”
He holds her tighter against him. “That’s not true, Izumi,” he says firmly.
“Yes, it is.”
“Sit down, Izumi.” He guides her to the red and gold couch in his office and kneels in front of her. He takes one of her hands in her lap between his own, her gaze fixed downwards.
“Look at me,” he says softly.
She swallows and looks up, a tear rolls down her cheek.
“It has been, and still is, the greatest privilege of my life to be your father. The first time I ever saw you, I didn’t think I could ever love anyone more. I would have rather died than see you get hurt.” He pauses and wipes a tear off his cheek with his sleeve, and then does the same for Izumi. “And you’re right, I am lonely sometimes, but it’s not your fault, Izumi. In fact, when I see you smile or do something that brings you joy, I wonder how I could ever have wanted anything else. So don’t you ever think that you took anything away from me because you are the greatest joy of my life.”
She cannot stop the tears at his admission. She wraps her arms around his neck and he hugs her tightly to him. He doesn’t seem to mind that his robes are getting wet from her tears. Let’s pray it’s not an omen about our next Fire Lord plays again in her mind, and now with her father’s words, she only cries harder. He had so much faith in her, and she hadn’t proven anything yet about her ability to lead.
A few minutes later when she had stopped crying, Zuko loosens his embrace.
“I hate when my little girl is upset. You know Azula used to laugh at me because I’d cry when you got hurt or when you were sick. Then one time while I was in a meeting and Azula interrupted it clearly distraught because she found out someone had picked on you at school and she wanted the swiftest punishment imaginable, and I told her, 'now you know how it feels.'”
Izumi lets out a little laugh against his robes.
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Want me to make some tea?”
“You’re turning into grandfather,” she quips, pulling out of the hug.
“I’d consider that a very nice compliment, Zumi,” Zuko jokes.
A short while later they are in the kitchens, each with a cup of tea in hand, but a darkness still sits heavy in Izumi’s heart. She knows she won’t be able to shake it off anytime soon.
AN: I love soft Dadko and protective Aunt Azula. I think it’s cool to explore Izumi’s understanding of her family and their past, especially in a way that it mixes with her own insecurities and fears. Next chapter, we get Bumi (who is actually of my favorite of the Gaang Kids, even though I tend to harp on Izumi.)

My thoughts on LOK characters after watching season 1 (spoilers (obv))
Thoughts on characters before watching | after season 1 | after season 2 | after season 3
Korra: I do not understand how people dont like her. Shes spunky and doesnt take shit and she has her own opinions... definitely a Taurus with ADHD you cannot change my mind. I feel like the reason ppl dont like her is purely based on the fact that shes a poc and a woman with a strong opinion and mindset and we're all taught that that's not acceptable. Ppl just can't stand that shes not like Aang. ANYWAY I LOOOOVVVEEEEE HER AND I RELATE TO HER SO MUCH I know shes not canonically ADHD but I still feel very represented
Jinora: sooo different from what I imagined! I thought she'd be more of an extrovert!! Shes so cute tho and I love how shes clearly a daughter of Tenzin!!
Amon: WHAT. HOLY CRAP. I did not expect him to be like....this.... this man is so OP!! How does he???? What is he???? This just creeped me OUT! What an amazing villain. And yk big thanks to him for getting Korra in touch with her air bending and the spirit world. Helpful man
Tenzin: I dont think I was wrong about him in my first post. I love him so so much i want him to adopt me lowkey???
Mako: still very attractive to the point that I just hate it. Idk I really like him but there's something off... and I know hes not gonna stay with Korra(?) But i dont think they're right for each other. He wasnt being honest with Asami and Korra and idk I like a man who's honest my dudes. Love the fact that he loves his brother so much!! So so cute!!! I love Mako, I just dont think either Asami nor Korra are right with him. But maybe I'll change my mind on that throughout the next seasons???
Bolin: THE AXTUAL LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!???? I LOVE THIS DUDE IF HE WERE REAL I WOULD MARRY HIM SO HARD LIKE HALLO THIS PURE BOY IS A DREAM MAN
Kuvira: I dont think I've met her yet??? So I dont know
Asami: still haunts my dreams this queen is the most beautiful person in any room shes in. In the beginning I felt like there was smth off... like she was so kind so quickly and that was just super sus but maybe shes just very social and just wanted friends!! I love when she stood up for herself when Mako wasnt being honest. You go queen!
Zaheer: I dont think we've been introduced yet so idk
Eska: same as Zaheer
Kya: I have no idea but now that I'm thinking about it maybe shes Katara daughter? Her mom's name was Kya right?
Lin: definitely bisexual. Fierce. I love her oh my god we stan a strong woman
Opal: we've not met her yet?
Wan: also haven't met
Bumi: WEVE HAD A FIRST GLANCE AT HIM AND HIS PERSONALITY IS LIKE AANG AND SOKKA COMBINED???
Suyin: I'm pretty sure now that she is Tophs daughter
Unalaq: I'd like to retract the statement that he has daddy vibes. He does not thank you. Well he does, when we meet him and at the end, in the middle hes lowkey an asshole though. Still hot though cant help it. When it was revealed he was Amons brother my mind was blown and the backstory is so tragic (so it turns out I switched the brothers but I'd figure I'd leave it in bc I was so confused and it was hilarious anyway read Tarrlok for that)
Meelo: HOW DARE THEY WRITE ME INTO THIS SHOW WITHOUT MY PERMISSION HAHAHAHAH MY MAN INVENTED FART BENDING??? ME BITCH I want to adopt this lil dude and mother him and that says something considering I dont want children so, yk, Meelo best boy
Varrick:have we met? Is he the referee at the fight club? I dont know. He looks fab tho
Pabu: AAAAAAHHH I LOVE HIM AND I WOULD STILL VERY MUCH DIE FOR HIM THANK YOU SIR? SIR?I WOULD DI3 FOR YOU SIR.
Pema: best mom. Looks like a cinnamon roll but could very much kill you. This queen gave birth to 4 whole ass kids and still just does her thing strong queen
Hiroshi: he is rich. Great mustache. Absolute douch tho
Tonraq: I honestly dont know OH WAIT IS HE KORRAS DAD?
Desna: still dont know
Saikhan: chief of police...? Still mean grandpa vibes
Shiro: is this the hobo man? I'm so lost in all the characters man
Senna: KORRAS MOM OH MY GOD THE MOST BEAITIFUL LADY ICE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE

Overall thoughts so far:
OKAY SO I've waited with watching this for such a long time bc I just figured it would disappoint me bc I love Atla so so much!! So I never got to watching it always coming up with excuses for myself. Now that it came to NETFLIX though, I had no excuses left and boy am I happy I didn't. This show has already been amazing so far. There are certain things I still dont really understand but I'm sure we'll get clarification on that (why couldn't Korra airbend and spirit thing yk why and how can Amon take away powers? Etc) I'm so excited to watch more! It hold my attention so so well, I love the characters (I LOVE KORRA!!!) Anyway I was not disappointed and that was a great surprise!! I'm gonna start on season 2 and write another on of these when I finish that!

Confessions of a Teenage Sugar Queen: In Other News
This is for @zutaraweek Day Five: Modern Times
Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four
Zuko and I fall into a comfortable pattern of casual conversation in the car, a productive partnership at work, and the occasional night “out” at Mushi’s. He puts on an unconvincing act like his uncle annoys him, but I can tell they are close. Whatever Zuko doesn’t say out loud, I can easily read on his face. Details behind those expressions are lacking, of course.
Certain topics are off limits—like what happened with his father or that night in Iroh’s apartment. I let down my guard in sharing about my mom, but I’m putting it back up until it’s clear what direction we’re headed with all this. It's easy to talk to Zuko, but trusting him is a different matter entirely.
The first warning comes from Yue. She reassigns Hahn to the education position, and I assume it's because she is tired of his constant flirting. But then she starts spending more time in her office, making hushed phone calls behind closed doors. I imagine some intriguing behind-the-scenes action—like they’ve discovered the elusive tiger-seal (a creature from my stories) and finally receive the national attention they deserve for their hard work.
I often use fiction to escape my reality. Why do I feel this sudden urge to write?
I panic when Yue calls me into her office. She’s caught me daydreaming again. Or she’s seen me staring at Zuko’s ass. She’ll reprimand me for being so distracted all the time and probably reassign me, too. I prepare a report about some unusual findings Zuko and I discovered in one of the plankton samples as proof we work well together. I’m ready with my notes and everything.
“Katara, how are things going with Zuko?” she asks.
“F-f-fine, I guess. Er—great.” I didn’t expect that question, exactly.
She eyes the papers in my hands, the ones I'm flipping through nervously. “You… guess?“
“We’re good partners.” Ugh, I hate that I’m blushing right now. “In the lab, I mean. We get a lot done.”
Yue nods slowly in the way that grownups usually do when they have something they don’t want to say. “That’s good. So… you don’t feel… threatened… in any way?”
Blindsided again. What the hell does she mean by that?
I try to pick up my jaw and answer quickly. I don’t want my silence to raise any suspicions. “Threatened by Zuko? No, not at all.”
“Have you received threats from anyone else?”
“I’m sorry, but I don’t understand.”
“I don’t mean to scare you, Katara, but some threats have been made around here recently. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, will you please let me know as soon as possible?”
“Of course.”
“And… be careful. Zuko’s situation is… complicated.”
When I piece this conversation together with what I overheard between Zuko and Yue that one day, my best guess is that Mr. Kasai gives a lot of money to the Marine Center. And when things don’t go his way, he may use his power to pressure them. If Zuko’s face is any indicator, then I have no doubt his father would make threats… and follow through with them.
But what does this have to do with me?
My second clue arrives through a series of messages from Azula. She says I should stop seeing her brother, that their father disapproves, that if Zuko stays with me, then he will pay…
First of all, we are not together!
Wait. Am I the reason he…
I was with him that night.
Oh shit.
I have to know for sure.
Except Zuko is acting… weird. He’s more relaxed and happier than I’ve ever seen him. There may even be a hint at a sense of humor trying to break through his surly outer shell. Iroh has noticed the change, too, and calls it a “metamorphosis.” Zuko says he resents being compared to a butterfly and tells his uncle to “bug off.”
Did I say sense of humor? More like lame attempts at making jokes.
I laugh anyway. He lights up when I do. Like a... firefly?
Damn, he’s gorgeous.
There is no way in hell I’m bringing up that stuff about his father now.
Iroh invites Gran Gran and me to a July Fourth barbecue on the beach. Normally Dad and Sokka would come home for the holiday, but those storms swept northward and disrupted their travel plans. As consolation, I’ve been promised a HUGE party to celebrate my 16th birthday in August. To be honest, I’d be OK with a small family gathering. And Zuko. Maybe Mushi, too.
Speaking of, that man loves parties.
While Ozai practically owns half of the bayside resort property on Ember Island, his brother opted for a vacation home and a strip of private beach along the Pacific coast instead. This area is much better for surfing, but no one brought any gear today. Gran Gran enjoys chatting with Iroh’s friends, Jeong Jeong, Bumi, and Piandao. There are a few people I recognize from the restaurant—an employee or two, and a repeat customer I often see there. A young girl, maybe four or five years old, flits about the adults vying for attention. Coincidentally, she's wearing a pair of costume butterfly wings.
I survey the perfect waves and lament not having a surfboard.
“You just want an excuse to get me in a wet suit,” Zuko says.
“Was that… another joke?”
“You know me, Katara. I don’t joke.”
His face is passive, but golden eyes flash with bridled laughter. There is only one thing I can do to unleash it.
Tickle him.
“Nephew, why don’t you show Katara the tide pools?”
At first I think Iroh makes the suggestion because he disapproves of our touchy-feely ticklefest which involves tackling each other and rolling around in the sand. But after the short hike to the tide pools, I wonder if he was actually encouraging us. We are now enclosed in a small private cove.
Zuko laughs. “Uncle knows that low tide was hours ago.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, you can’t really see anything right now. If he intended for me to show you the marine life and all, then…”
We both know it was a setup, but I’m the first to make a move. I lace my fingers with his and wait to release the breath I’m holding. He does that shuddery sigh thing, like he’s relieved. And then he squeezes my hand.
“Could you tell me about it at least?” I lean into his shoulder and decide to breathe again.
“Uhh—“ He swallows. “Organisms that survive here must be able to withstand harsh conditions. The environment is constantly changing with the tides, but a unique biodiverse ecosystem has adapted to thrive.”
He gets a poke in the ribs for that. “Thank you, Wikipedia.”
He grabs my other hand to ward off the attack—or maybe to pull me closer. “I had the education position at the Marine Center, remember?”
I’m facing him now, and a heat rises between us. I’m feeling bold enough to close the gap and trap it. I’m already enslaved by the intensity of his gaze.
“Yes sir, Professor Kasai.”
He freezes.
He only steps a few feet away, but he’s as distant as the offshore waves. He’s watching them, too, but without really seeing them. There is something with him and the water—while I feel connected to it, he’s haunted by it.
“My mom loved the ocean,” he says suddenly.
The space he left behind is now cold—empty. It takes me a while to recover, to respond. “That’s something we have in common."
At this, Zuko smiles. “She would like you.”
Some warmth returns, but I'm still uncertain. “Oh. I meant… my mom loved the ocean, too.”
“Ocean secret, vast and blue
Ebbs and flows, beneath the moon,
Rise and fall, crashing blue spirit
Whispers on waves, can you hear it?”
“That’s… beautiful,” I say.
“She wrote poetry… about a lot of things, but her favorite was the sea.”
My heart is racing again, but for a different reason this time. “That’s something else we have in common.”
“What’s that?”
“My mom was a writer, too. She was an investigative reporter for The Modern Times. She wrote mostly stuff about the environment, so our work at the Marine Center reminds me a lot of her.”
“That’s so cool, Katara. She would be very proud of you.”
“She got her first big break on the oil spill in Alaska. That was before she met Dad. She dug so deep into the corporate scandal that even years later, they had to move because of safety. Of course, that didn't keep her from doing the same thing here."
"What happened to her?"
"We don't really know. She was on assignment in Death Valley. Her editor suspected foul play... but there was never any proof."
Zuko goes pale. Paler than pale. Paler than I thought possible. "D-d-death Valley?"
If Zuko’s ghosts are whispers in the waves, then mine are mirages in the desert. "Yeah. I know. Sorry, I didn’t mean to—"
"It's getting late. We should start heading back."
It's not late, but I've obviously said too much… again. I never talk about this with anyone, and I promised myself I wouldn’t be so vulnerable with Zuko. But he’d opened up about his mom... a little. Maybe something bad happened to her, too.
Zuko avoids me for the rest of the day. He uses the excuse that he needs to help his uncle with the food... and then the cleaning… and setting up for fireworks...
At dusk, they disappear. I watch Gran Gran play a complicated board game called Pai Sho with Piandao. When we settle on the beach for the show, Iroh’s youngest visitor unexpectedly plops down in my lap. I catch a whiff of something familiar, something comforting...
Moon peaches.
"Hi, I'm Kiyi," she announces, leaning against my chest and looking up at me with curious golden eyes.
“Hi, I’m Katara,” I answer slowly. “Where is your—“
“I love the fire in the sky!” she squeals as the first bottle rocket takes flight. “Uncle does the best fireworks ever!”
I’m not sure which adult the girl came with since I haven’t been introduced to everyone at the party. I can guess by her looks that she’s related to the Kasai family somehow, but it’s the way she says Uncle that sounds…
Just like Zuko.
Per the norm, the next time I’m in Zuko’s car, we act like nothing ever happened—the almost-kiss, the cold shoulder followed by moments of deep connection complete with a poetry performance.
Nevermind all that. I have more pressing questions. "Who is Kiyi?"
"I don't know. Uncle adopts practically everyone and calls them family. He already thinks of you as his niece.” Zuko immediately turns bright red and coughs. “Kiyi is sweet, but hella stubborn."
Just like Zuko. "Are you sure you're not related?"
"Maybe? Like distant cousins or something?"
"Does Iroh have any kids?"
"His son died in the war."
I apparently have a talent for finding the most sombre subjects. Either that, or there is no end to Zuko's family drama. "Oh. Sorry."
"What's this all about anyway?"
"She told me about the blue spirit."
Aaaaaaaand cue the switch from deep red to paler than pale as the color drains from Zuko’s face. "That's... well, anyone could say that. It wouldn't be the first time something supernatural was attributed to the sea. Take... Poseidon for example."
"Or Tui and La." I wait for the furrowed brow to follow.
And... check. “Who, what now?” he asks.
“Your mom’s poem reminded me of the moon and ocean spirits, Tui and La. It’s a belief my ancestors in Alaska held, a harmonious push-and-pull relationship to keep the world in balance.”
“Sounds like the tides.”
“Exactly.”
Here comes the part where he sighs dramatically, but I have no idea what he'll say next.
“It’s just another way to explain what we don’t understand. What we cannot control.”
Hmm, interesting. “Isn’t that what spirituality does?" I muse aloud. "Help us make peace with those things? Like death, for example.”
I am NOT speaking from experience because if I’m honest with myself, I am far from making peace with my mother’s death. If he has any insight, I'm all ears.
“I… don’t know.”
I don’t know, either, but I wish I did... for the both of us.
I spend another day at the Marine Center in a complete state of distraction. After this, Yue will undoubtedly reassign me to the dreaded job of cleaning up seal shit. She alternates between giving me looks of warning and pity, so I’m still not sure what to make of our conversation or anything else that's transpired since then.
I'm going to ask Zuko about it. Point blank. He'll probably turn a ghastly shade I haven't seen, yet. But it's better than black and blue, if his father really is making threats.
But when we head back to his uncle's restaurant after work, we don't slip into our usual booth near the back. I follow Zuko past the kitchen to the stairs that lead up to Iroh’s apartment. We haven't been here alone together since that night, and all of those sensations return to me as if that moment is suspended in time. I’m looking at the face of someone who’s been beaten, and all I want to do is kiss the pain away. I won’t reopen those wounds—not now, not ever.
Zuko is not one for dwelling in the past, though. He doesn’t skip a beat as he leads me down the hallway, and I think maybe we're going to his room. My brain and pulse race with curiosity—of the possibilities—but he stops short of the doorway and points at something on the wall.
My breath catches. It’s a framed newspaper article from The Modern Times, dated May 2009, the same year my mom died.
The headline reads, "No matter how things may seem to change, never forget who you are." I skim down to the byline at the bottom. "Professor Kasai teaches English composition at Atlas University."
Zuko's mom taught at AU? And she wrote for The Modern Times, too?
"When I worked for my dad last summer, I found some of Mom’s files," Zuko explains. "I knew she wrote a few articles, but I didn't know Uncle had this until I started staying here recently.”
"Do you think our moms knew each other? It's a big newspaper, but maybe—"
"Was your mom The Painted Lady?"
I stop breathing altogether. "What?"
He runs a hand through his hair like he does when he's nervous. "Was that her...pen name... or whatever?"
It was a reference to war paint and a tribute to our tribal heritage. "Yes. Why?"
"Then I need to show you something."
