23.03.2023 Varanasi at Dawn (not exactly) In March 2017, my good friend Pete Western (IG: @theoldcowboy) and I took a sketching and photography tour of India together but out of respect for the dead and bereaved, we didn’t draw or photograph the funeral pyres on the ghats on the banks of the Ganges at Varanasi. These images are an attempt at evoking the atmosphere of the place at dawn, in my own fine art print style. The images are generated entirely in Midjourney v5, with minimal post but without any visual reference whatsoever and (to the AI naysayers out there) without citing any artist’s name, work or style, not even my own. Just one thing, the rising sun is in the wrong place. 18.03.2023 Balham, Northern Line Exploring the possibilities of generating photographic images from sketch drawings in Midjourney AI v5 Using a written prompt that includes a single sketch reference drawing and no other visual reference, MJ sometimes produces photographic images that bear an uncanny resemblance to the original subject. Again, a minimal and quickly drawn (Balham is my stop) profile sketch, slightly caricatured. MJ took a few attempts before getting the nose right and I couldn’t remember if she was wearing a light or dark hoodie, so tried both.

18.03.2023 Embankment, Northern Line Exploring the possibilities of generating photographic images from sketch drawings in Midjourney AI v5 Using a written prompt that includes a single sketch reference drawing and no other visual reference, MJ sometimes produces photographic images that bear an uncanny resemblance to the original subject. Using a less detailed, more minimal sketch than usual here, MJ surprised me with the accuracy of the character, straight off the bat, even with the initial quadrant, even down to the fur collar and neck scarf not detailed in the written prompt.

Try as I might, I could not get MJ to incorporate the produce weigh scales into the main image, only as a separate detail. MJ didn’t quite manage the Hi Vis detail here and the woman is a little younger than the original sketch subject and again, the public transport detail is off but overall it’s pretty close.
