1627 - russian tsar encouraged by the russian orthodox church burns and bans books in Ukrainian

1863 - the Valuev Circular bans issuing literature in Ukrainian

1876 - the Decree of Emsk bans even performing plays and folk songs in Ukrainian

1970 - a decree states that PhD thesises must be written in russian only

And those are just some instances. But why some Ukrainians might scream in russian when in fear and pain remains a mystery!
