chapter 001

summary: Jake is caught in a scandal, and the group’s manager suggests a fake relationship with a mysterious boy to fix it

The room felt like time was moving in slow motion for Jake.

His eyes stayed locked on the boy in front of him, his mind racing. Who is this? Why him? And why does the company think he’s the solution to this mess?

The manager finally spoke, his voice cutting through the thick tension.

“This is Y/N. From this moment on, he will be Jake’s boyfriend.”

“What?” Jake blurted out. He barely had time to react before Jungwon leaned forward, brows furrowed. “Wait, hold on who is this guy? Why him?”

Y/N remained still, his expression unreadable behind the mask. He didn’t flinch under their stares, standing with quiet confidence as if the situation didn’t faze him at all.

The manager sighed, already expecting their resistance. “We chose him because he’s the best fit for the role. He’s someone the company and I trust.”

Jake scoffed, crossing his arms. “That doesn’t really answer the question.” His voice was sharp, frustration bubbling beneath his skin. “I don’t even know him.”

Y/N finally spoke, his voice calm and collected. “You don’t need to.”

That response only irritated Jake more. “So, what? You just show up and pretend to be my boyfriend like it’s no big deal?”

“Pretty much.” Y/N said, a small smirk tugging at his lips as he watched Jake struggle between confusion and frustration.

Jay sighed and cut in. “Alright, Jake, enough. You don’t get to be picky about this. Everyone here is dealing with this because you got caught in a scandal. So please, let the manager speak and stop being so hardheaded.”

Jake opened his mouth to argue, but the manager spoke before he could.

“Okay! Now, on to the terms of this ‘relationship,’” he said, making air quotes. “Y/N and Jake will be seen together publicly, they’ll interact on social media to sell the relationship, and we will stage moments of romance.”

His gaze swept across the room. “Are these conditions clear?” His voice was firm.

“Yes, sir,” Y/N responded without hesitation.

Jake clenched his jaw. “I hate the idea of lying to Engene, sir.”

Jungwon spoke up. “Jake is correct, sir. I speak for the team when I say this… the idea of lying to Engene doesn’t feel right.”

The rest of the members nodded, their expressions serious.

The manager let out a frustrated sigh, rubbing his temples. “Alright then,” his voice laced with irritation. “Please, enlighten me. What’s your plan to fix this mess?”

Silence.

Jake clenched his jaw, his fingers curling into fists. He wanted to argue, to say this whole thing was ridiculous, but… what other option was there? The scandal wasn’t going to disappear on its own.

The manager scanned the room, waiting. “That’s what I thought. You don’t have one.” He leaned forward slightly. “We don’t have time to sit around debating what’s right or wrong. This is about control. If we don’t take charge of the situation, it will only get worse.”

Jake shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his frustration mixing with a feeling he didn’t want to acknowledge, helplessness.

Y/N, who had been silent this whole time, finally spoke. “It’s just acting.” His voice was calm, almost uninterested. “If you do it right, no one will feel lied to.”

Jake snapped his head toward him, eyes narrowing. “You don’t get it.”

Y/N barely reacted. Instead, he tilted his head slightly. “Don’t I?”

Something about the way he said it so unbothered, almost knowing made Jake’s irritation flare even more. "Who is this guy?" Jake thought.

The manager clapped his hands together, cutting off the moment. “Good. Now that that’s settled, let’s go over the plan.”

Um so I've been sitting on this ask for months cause I didn't want to bother you with how many messages you must get. And because it's difficult for me to be open about my experiences, but I'm working on that part thanks to you! ✧⁠◝⁠(⁠⁰⁠▿⁠⁰⁠)⁠◜⁠✧

For the first time in my 32 years of life I'm starting to open up to my friends and family. When I'm tearing myself down or having a panic attack about how I think I'm failing the people around me, now I say "This is something Siffrin would do, and you'd give them grace, so give yourself grace..." I can't overstate how much your writing has changed my life for the better.

AND I KNOW THIS IS CRINGE but I've been seeking out a last name for myself for many many years, cause I hate having my estranged father's name. And I never found a name that felt right, until now. Thank you for the info on the bouncing animations, seeing my characters do a lil jump is so fun!

And I do mean the sounds themselves, I’ve figured out the coding bit. The sound design in MO is so good! I gotta know your secrets!

Haha I'm happy to have helped! For the sound design it's pretty straightforward, I just assembled the sounds in Premier Pro (it's not an audio software but it was conveniently on my desktop) and layered them out. So one audio file has multiple sounds in sequence.

For a longer explanation:

If you look at the audio files, some of them are baked in like "tail-whip.ogg" having the mug being pushed, falling off the edge, a whoosh of air and the tail catching it in one single audio file. Another example is "kitchen-cabinets.ogg" where you can hear Mychael's boots walk away first and then muffled cabinets opening and closing.

The sequence of different sound cues really make it unique to that scenario instead of just one noise indicating movement like a simple 'thwap' to show the mug being caught or just kitchen cabinets themselves. It's a little extra admittedly (I don't know if a lot of VNs even do this) but I really enjoy doing it especially hearing the final result!

As I implement them in, I always go back and forth looking at what I wrote and what I expect to hear, since I want it to feel natural regardless of reading speed if that makes sense. Timing them is the most important!

There is a 'queue audio' function in Ren'Py where one audio file plays after the first is finished, but I find it much more finicky than just editing the sounds myself where I can control the timing, volume and add in effects if I wanted in one single playback.

there was an additional line i wrote in the first version of the epilogue about niji crawling in through leo's bedroom window one night to cry on him because she was being officially adopted by her snake foster moms. i didnt end up going with that version but niji and suzy and renren all get adopted by families who adore them and they all remain leo's ride-or-dies for life. meanwhile their adoptive parents flock to yoshi for advice because he's kept 5 entire kids alive to reach their teenage years somehow and that makes him THE guy to ask any question you have. yoshi has no idea they hang on his every word, he's still getting used to like. having more than one friend 😭 he also has june AND usagi's auntie in his corner now. auntie is like 'ah yes, my family has suddenly gotten much bigger, and contains turtles, humans, AND a rat now. the more the merrier'

and benny !!! i joked to my friends on discord that hueso's entire family was predisposed to spoil leo rotten before they even met him because benny talked about him so much

So what's the lore with Juniper n their relationship with Vitimir n Hettie?

WELL for both, their relationships go back to their school days! Although the difference being that Juniper and Hettie went to St. Epiderm together, while Vitimir went to a different school (Glandus at the time he met Juniper).

I’ve briefly touched on how Juniper and Vitimir met here, so that explains their first meeting. To reiterate, Vitimir was a shy kid that didn’t really have any friends growing up (aside from bugs/whatever little creatures they spent their time around) and was bullied frequently, so that single positive interaction with Juniper, though small, really stuck with him and he never forgot it. Juniper didn’t forget it either, but being the sociable type meeting and talking to lots of different people, that moment sorta blended in with the rest of their memories. So fast forward to them both working as Coven Heads at the same time, Vitimir immediately recognizes Juniper. Despite Juniper changing a lot since his child self, that one good memory left such a big impact on Vitimir as a kid that he still held that soft spot for them. So of course, when Juniper eventually approached him on their own time, Vitimir already had this layer of vulnerability. Even though they might not have recognized him, from Vitimir’s perspective, there was that sense of familiarity and comfort; Juniper might have changed, but that kind kid was still in him. Now that they have the chance, Vitimir wants to actually get to know this one person who had plagued so many of their thoughts as a kid. And the rest is history!!

As for Hettie! Again, she and Juniper attended St. Epiderm together. Hettie was just as terrifying as a kid as she is now. She was everything- a jock, a princess, a bully, a weird girl, whatever you can think of. Though she’s very open about who she is, everyone around her was always so intimidated by the fact that she was unpredictable (and the fact that she’s both the smartest AND strongest person you’d ever meet is terrifying enough on its own). Most everyone- except for Juniper. To Juniper, Hettie was always such a character. She’s always been so confident and unapologetic, able to command people’s attention without even saying a word. Her unpredictability made everything she did so interesting. Juniper so deeply admired this about Hettie. And the fact that she’s 100% his type only drew them closer to her. Hettie was Juniper’s first ever crush, and that love Juniper had for her never faded. Though as kids, they weren’t in the same social circles, they did cross paths a lot, whether it was through Sonia (Scooter Crane’s daughter and childhood best friend to Juniper, who was also in the Healing Track), or Juniper getting injured for whatever ridiculous reasons. At this age, Hettie didn’t reciprocate her feelings (yet), but she had a fondness for Juniper because he was so different from the other kids for the fact alone that they had a (very obvious) crush on her. And while their crush may have caused them to do embarrassing things, and foolishly being used as her own guinea pig from time to time to practice her magic on, Hettie had cared about Juniper. To her, he always made life more fun and interesting. Fast forward to them as Coven Heads- Hettie has grown a stronger affection for Juniper. He’s changed over the years, but he still makes life so much more fun and interesting. Perhaps now, Hettie admires Juniper for the same exact reasons they always have her. They’re still a bit pathetic around her, but Hettie finds it endearing. Not to mention, Juniper still makes for a good doll to experiment on, and she takes good care of her favorite dolls ;-)
