Grian walked with Scar down the hallway, though their rooms were close by it still was a bit of a walk due to how big these apartments were. Especially the more luxury ones. Grian was still processing how large the place was, having sat in a bathroom taking in the sheer amount of space he had. Going from a tiny college dorm to basically 3x the size was a bit jarring. Oddly Bdubs did let her take her time, if only to avoid a sensory meltdown of a watcher.
Grian had slowly gotten used to the large space, and got familiar with it. At Cub's suggestions he took too personalizing the place to make it feel like home. Cub said that making a new space homey would help him with the overwhelmed feeling of it. By filling it with stuff it would make it feel less big. And oddly enough that worked. Grian was also thinking about getting a cat, something he always wanted. Once the NHO finally gave him the stuff from his college dorm back, it was nice to put the funny red sheets on the bed with the mismatched Minecraft pillow case and the plaid blanket he got a thrift store. One day while personalizing the place Scar came over and said Grian was going to see his and Cub's apartment.
"Are you sure about this Scar?" Grian asked as they walked, the only sound was their shoes on the carpet.
"Absolutely! Cub is super excited to show off our treasures to you!" Scar said very eager as he had a bounce in his step. "We got all sorts of things to show off from our days as Convex."
Grian gave a look as she felt nervous. "Scar are some of these objects going to cause anything to burn, melt, cause a rash, or break me in any way, shape, or form?" she asked, learning to cover all her bases with Scar or Cub. They liked to play mind games and riddles, or round about questions.
Gapping looking mock offended, Scar placed a hand on his chest. "Why Grian! Why would you ever think we'd intentionally put you in dan-" he cut off by the hard look. "Well, we always make sure your safe, have we ever put you in a stupidly dangerous situation before?"
"Do you want that alphabetically or chronologically? Because I can think of three just from last week." Grian deadpanned as Scar made small pouting sounds.
"Look we won't let anything hurt you, promise on my wings!" Scar said cheerful as ever, as Grian sighed heavily. By now they were in front of the door as Scar punched in the code number and the door opened. NHO believed that keys were impractical and easy to lose.. So hence remembering a code to get into your home. He's more shocked he hasn't broken it yet.
The smell in the apartment was the first thing she noticed. Sweet, like sugar cookies or cake. Not over powering, but noticeable. The next was the sheer amount of shelves with trinkets, and pictures of Cub and Scar in different places.
Grian looked around noticing they were fond of the colors blue and some whites with a few blacks or dark browns to compliment it. It oddly wasn't harsh on the eyes, sure it was bright but not like the stark white walls of the NHO labs. This felt functional and warm.
Taking off her shoes, she sat down on the soft couch as Scar called to Cub that she was here. Through the smell of the sweetness, Grian could making out food from the kitchen. She didn't think either of them could cook, but it oddly smelled good.
As Scar went to get his partner, hanging up his coat on the rack, Grian took in the place. There was these pictures of Scar and Cub doing funny poses at historical places, most of them Scar or Cub was breaking something in them. He also saw a few objects next to them, this large crystal near a picture of them holding a man by his shirt collar over a pool of water that had the crystals in it. A picture of them near the pyramids, with Scar having tripped in the background into sand, next to it was some gold mask.
She also saw some black rocks near with many holes in it, which she could say were meteorites of sorts. "I like to collect anything space related." she turned to see Cub grinning at her from the doorway. "Anyway, welcome to our home currently." he shrugged, as if to say this was a temporary place.
"It's rather full of things." Grian said passivley, not in a bad way, but an observation.
"Ofcourse! Cub and I love to show all our things. Oh! Cub we should show her the skull room!" Scar looked excited. "We like to collect skulls of people we killed and decorate them, i love that one we did by dipping it in gold!"
Grian stared at Scar then looked at Cub, he just laughed, "Later Scar, lunch is almost done." he teased his partner. "Hope you like meat, mostly steak cubes in a thick soup."
"I didn't know you cooked." Grian commented, Cub just shrugged and said nothing. She didn't expect him to, he liked to let gestures speak louder than words, and didn't think cooking was a big deal to explain it.
A meow broke the silence as a cat jumped onto Grian's lap purring. She was white and grey marking, nuzzling up to him. "Awe!" Grian cooed petting the soft fur, "Arent' you an adorable fur ball?" she smiled when the cat licked her nose.
"That's Jellie!" Scar said, "My cat, and she's a purr-fect kitty!" he said as Grian was petting Jellie with a bright smile on his face. Scar was also smiling at how Jellie loved their new partner instantly.
After that was Cub letting the food simmer and telling Grian about the objects in the room and where they got them. Jellie making herself comfortable on his lap. And Scar telling the shenanigans the got into to get these objects and the missions. How Doc, Beef, Etho, and Bdubs all get annoyed they take 'souvenirs'.
'I mean really, you give a man a chance to see something he's never seen before, and tell him NOT to take anything?" Scar waved his hand dismissively.
Grian was laughing by now, "Scar these might be historical objects worth thousands!" he managed between laughs. "Governments don't like when you just take them."
"Then they should put up a sign!" Scar defended to her.
"They do!" Grian laughed out as Scar pouted next to Cub mumbling something about they shouldn't tempt a vex with a shiny object.
Showing her the amazing view they had, and trying not to laugh at how her legs shook. And she shakily said it was pretty. Who knew Grian was afraid of heights? Gently leading him away from the window.
The beef cube stew was amazing when she got to try it, savory and tender. Near melting in her mouth, and Cu assured her it was beef. "We'd never make you eat a person Grian, that's cruel and your our friend!" he said firmly, it was the first time Grian had heard him sound so serious.
The way he said it though... Grian felt a strange sense of warmth by how firmly he said she was their friend. Truth be told she didn't have many friends in college too focused on passing classes. Yet sitting here with Scar saying they needed to bring Grian on a mission to see some landmark, and Cub readily agreeing some exposure to breaking the law in minor ways would be a good way to get her into being a hitman.... Grian found herself smiling softly to herself.
It was late as Scar had fallen asleep watching movies with them, Disney movies and getting Grian to sing some songs off key with him. Cub was getting Scar to bed when Grian was getting her shoes. "Thanks for having me over Cub." he said softly. "I enjoyed it."
"You're welcome any time here Grian, I'll text you the pass code." Cub said with a shrug on his shoulders. The smile on his face didn't seem as sinister as the ones he gives to Doc or Bdubs, no teeth. Must be a vex thing.
Cub walked with Grian back to her apartment, "Today felt oddly normal, if you don't count the weird objects you two have." she joked as Cub looked at her. "Huh... guess i never knew I was misisng some sense of normalcy in this mess."
Oddly he thinks she didn't mean to say that last part outloud. Yet as she bids him goodnight, and heads inside her home, Cub narrowed his eyes down the hall. Well, if Grian hanging with them made her feel better, he'd be sure she knew she was always welcome...
Holding back a scowl, Cub left to go bother the NHO by creating some digital problems. Maybe he could trick them into letting them take Grian out of the HQ for a few days? Yeah, he was sure she'd love that! With a smile and a nod, Cub went off to do what he did best, cause problems.

hi everyone! this is your admin team here to give you an update on what’s going on and some future plans.
to start off, tibby is no longer an admin, but instead a member. the admin team will continue as three admins.
the character and mun masterlist and abilities and faceclaim directory is up to date (if you spot a mistake, please let us know).
continuing on that point, there is a new way to reach out to your admins. we’ve added a ticketbot to the server that will allow a member to directly talk to an admin, and will quicken response times from admins to members. this is under the category the ooc floor and the channel is q-and-admin. that said, hiatus forms still need to be sent to the main via asks.
we’ve added two more new channels as well, which can both be found under the category the ic floor. the first channel is muse-blogs and is a space for members to put their character names in a single message and their respective blog url side by side. all members should have this done asap.
the next channel is called worldbuilding and is a chance for members to share their ideas and headcanons about c23verse. this is not a channel for muse headcanons. we hope you all make use of it and enjoy thinking of various ways the existence of mutants shapes the world!
finally, we are heading toward the end of arc one. watch out for posts asking for volunteers for plot drops and upcoming events! to start off this final stretch, admin tin is creating a new task that will be posted february 1st. it’s going to be amazing, and i can’t wait for everyone to see it!
the admin team thanks you for your patience, and hopes you had a good holiday! we love being here and writing here and having you all as members ♡

Wraithlike Stirrings
Commander Tiberius:
**(Memory)**
I fly the transport ship through the gate to the prearranged location. Our diplomatic party consists of myself, Claudius and Lastlight, as well as a handful of drones. It is safer for our Mother not to attend such unpredictable events in-person, and Father trusts me well enough to be comfortable remaining at her side.
As we near the meeting place, I gain a sense of my brother’s minds, and perceive a stark contrast. It is why I chose them to accompany me in the first place, the one balances the other. Yet in this case, neither temperament is ideal. Claudius is on edge, whilst Lastlight is perhaps too confident. I chide them both.
((It is in both parties’ interests to form an alliance. I do not expect trouble. Nevertheless, the wraith who is unprepared for trouble is the wraith that ends up captured or killed.))
I look to Lastlight at that last comment. He is brilliant, undoubtedly, but not unstoppable. He rolls his eyes at me, of course, but Claudius takes my words to heart. I sense his nerves turn to brave resolve, and I send him rare praise, before further addressing Lastlight.
((Queen Agrippina is unlikely to attend herself, but her daughter may be present. From all accounts, she is a noble Princess with a strong mind, so you might wish to be careful around her.))
I privately remind him of the time he was allowed to meet Princess Rubyrose; he acted like a babbling idiot for most of that meeting. Of course, Mother is already considering arranging a betrothal between the two, anything for darling Lastlight. She is much the same with our youngest brother, the newly-named Caelus. Though what she sees in him, I am less sure of. So far he seems… vapid… I sense that Father hardly approves either, not that he would ever outwardly question Mother’s decisions.
In any case, no matter Mother’s approval, Lastlight will have to wait. Even if Princess Rubyrose is agreeable to the match, my betrothal must come first as the eldest. I sense Lastlight is hopeful that I will be taken with this Princess today, if she does indeed attend the discussions. Hm, we shall see. I am not so easily impressed as him…
I land the ship and step outside onto the world of Aequus. This planet and worlds like it have long been used for negotiations, and are viewed as neutral ground. Wraith worshippers have also been allowed to settle here, so that they have a safe place to live and reproduce when not in service… and we have access to quick and easy meals during long discussions. Some of the humans approach us without fear, but I wave them away. I do not care for their pomp or adulation, they are as irrelevant to me as the trees, except for when I am hungry.
No sooner have we landed than I hear the sound of the stargate activating in the distance. It seems this hive also values punctuality, a good start. Moments later, their transport ship arrives. As soon as it comes into close proximity, I can sense her. I called her noble before, but the word does not do her justice. She is… perfection! Everything a true wraith Queen should aspire to be and more! Courageous, but not foolhardy; intelligent, but not to the point of detachment; caring of her men, but not at the cost of weakness. I had said earlier that I was not easily impressed, but how could any being not be overcome with devotion to such a mind? To such a Queen. To Princess Vipsania.
She emerges from the ship, and her appearance is just as breath-taking as her mind. Silvery blonde hair cascades down past her shoulders in ringlets. Its colour is only exemplified by outfit she wears; all black, with an air of both elegance and practicality. If her hair is silver, her eyes are gold, and as I look at them she holds my gaze. I sense her own fascination with my mind, and she boldly approaches ahead of her brothers. I can hardly breathe as she stops only a few feet away from me, never breaking eye-contact, and gives me a curious smile.
(Vipsania): “And who might you be?”
**
(Vipsania): “Tiberius… Please… help me.”
(Michael): “Set her free, Tiberius. Free her wretched head from her miserable shoulders.”
“AHHHHH!”
****
The first sensation that returns as I awaken is pain. All of those memories, times spent with Vipsania, with Lastlight… and then remembering how everything went to hell. Even now, cured as I am, I cannot bring to mind all that took place during her last few hours. However, there are certain parts that (memory drugs aside) will never leave me. Her screaming, her blood- so much blood- and sensing her mind weaken and fade throughout it all. I was so close to her, mere inches away, and yet there was nothing that I could do to stop it. All I could do was watch, and feel her pain alongside her. Until she gave me her final request. And I had to…
I block that memory, refusing to let it overwhelm me once more. I remind myself that, even in death, I did for her what I could. I sent her head (released from that awful box) into her favourite star, so that she would forever be a part of it. Not only that, but with her brain destroyed, Michael could never hurt her again. And now… now I can truly say that she has been avenged! She is no longer merely a distant memory in Michael’s mind- one of many countless Queens he caused the death of- and he surely rues the day that he ripped our lives asunder! For now he KNOWS my pain, both for my child and for Vipsania!
My thoughts turn from them, to the one who allowed me to gain my vengeance. Nala… in the end, I pity my unfortunate sister. Despite my best attempts, the actions the Lanteans had taken could not be undone. She was as much of a freak as Michael, though in a different way, one which was arguably more sympathetic. The desire to care for her brothers remained, yet her nature was too weakened and corrupted to be in any fit state to rule. Needless to say, the corruption was only made worse in the presence of Michael! I saw it in these past two weeks (the memories of which seem much like a waking nightmare in my head), and I saw it when I first brought her back to the hive, all those years ago. I knew then that I could not repeat Mother’s mistake. If the worst were to happen- if my attempts at teaching her civility were to fail, or worse, Michael were to reclaim her- countermeasures must be prepared. I would not allow her to fall back into the depths of depravity, and release another abomination back out into the galaxy. For our sake, but also for hers. If I could give my sister nothing else, then I would give her peace. Of course, if she had to die, and her death were to occur in front of Michael, I would not waste the opportunity to teach him such a lesson in grief…
My thoughts are interrupted as I hear Hypnos’ voice in my head, asking about my current condition. I send him my utmost praise and gratitude! I dread to think of what may have befallen us had he not made preparations. Or even more alarmingly, if he had informed Michael of what was to occur. He may be a scientist, but I owe him my freedom and my life. I will not forget such a debt.
His own mind pulses with a heavy sorrow. I… share his regret at the fate of Marcellus and Caelus. Telling them about the poison would have been too great a risk, it was wise of Hypnos to withhold that knowledge from us all. However, it meant that they were ill-prepared for the escape, and circumstances being what they were at that debauched ‘celebration’, we had no choice but to leave them behind. My instincts were right in what I said to Hypnos afterwards, that we should not attempt a rescue for them, but only now do I have full insight into my reasonings. Any signs that we care for their predicament will only encourage Michael to use them against us. It was my mistake, my terrible mistake, to go back for Vipsania. I will not allow that to happen twice! If he sees no use for them on my behalf, if he believes that I do not care… they are nothing to him, he bears them no ill will, he will surely gift them the mercy of a quick death for their ‘loyalty’ in staying behind. Such is my hope, that they do not have to remain with him and suffer in his atrocious ‘kingdom’ for long.
My own time spent there… how do I even begin to process all that happened… and yet process it I must, if I wish to be in a position to address the men. I must face the humiliation and share all of my memories with them, first and foremost so that they understand the dangers of being captured by Michael. The recollections will also provide my brothers with all of the intelligence I was able to glean whilst I was… worse than a prisoner… a shell of a man…
The first attempt, ‘Tibby’, was undoubtedly the worst. Not for the many human acts I was compelled to perform- degrading as they were- but for the sickening emotions imprinted into my mind. The ‘happiness’ at being with the abomination, the ‘love’ I felt for the thing that hurt not one, but two of my Queens, my Father and so many of my brothers. I had thought that I could experience no more shame, after failing my siblings, Queen and child, but truly they all would have loathed me, to see me in such a state.
The second attempt was perhaps not as humiliating as the first, but I was still just as pathetic a creature in many ways. All of those weaklings whose foolish behaviour I was ordered to endure; the human children, the warped wraith scientist, the hordes of Michael’s hybrid freaks. Should any ever cross me again, my blade hand is ready. Then again, most of them will likely die long before they could ever track me down, either from their own stupidity, or from Michael’s disgusting new infection. As for Michael himself… being subjected to those ridiculous verbal battles with him... that is, when Nala was not present and he indulged her delusional, human-like family ‘games’… Well, such weakness on his own behalf is what allowed me to destroy that horrific planet. As for what strategy is to be employed against him next… well, that is a conversation to have with my remaining brothers. I have dwelt long enough on the past.
I make my way to the hibernation pods, blocking anything that is not useful or needed out of my head. As Father always taught me, I must be strong for them. The hybridisation alone will be a heavy blow for my brothers to take in when they awaken. How they will handle the news of all that has transpired, I cannot say. Nevertheless, I owe them every detail of the truth. Unlike Michael, I will not lie or make excuses for my actions. I will not beg for their forgiveness, and if they consider my actions to be regicide, I will do my duty and undergo exile.
I inform Hypnos of my plans, and send the few drones we have left to the bridge to relieve him. I give him the option of rest, but he chooses to join the others. I meet him at the entrance to the hibernation chamber and, when we are both ready, I deactivate all of the pods.

Begin Again (Mortician!Steve and Baker!Bucky Modern “Moving On” AU)
Twenty-Seven:
It didn't take long for a routine to form. One that Steve was significantly more eager to go through with. Sure, it wasn't an everyday or even an every other day type of routine like Steve would've liked. But it was an every Monday, Thursday, and sometimes Sunday routine. And Steve would take anything he could get from the stunning brunet.
Monday didn't even seem so bad as Steve woke with a smile in relief on his face, remembering that he'd get to see Bucky after a long, depressing weekend. It had been a difficult funeral to prepare for. Steve always found kid funerals to be sadder than the other funerals. And the most recent one even topped that cake with three siblings dying in a car crash along with their mother. Seeing the grief on the father's face as he stood as the sole survivor from the crash, brought tears to Steve's eyes. But what was even harder for Steve was finding Joe in the office, sobbing into Sarah's chest as he tightly held her petite frame close to him.
As Steve brushed his teeth, he looked over a still sleeping Vinnie. Wondering if he should wake the exhausted support dog. It had been a long weekend for him, too, after all.
Finishing up his morning business, Steve entered his bedroom and crossed the room to his bed. Petting the sleeping Weimaraner, Steve asked, "Ready to go running?"
Groggily, the dog lifted his head and looked over at Steve. Steve kept petting the pooch and questioned, "Wanna see Bucky?"
Cocking his head to the side as he looked over Steve, Vinnie looked more awake than he had a moment ago. Not that Steve could blame him, since he felt the same.
It worried Steve sometimes. Almost like he was depending too much on the charming brunet. What was he going to do once Bucky thought he was fit enough for his wedding tux? What was he going to do if Bucky decided it was no longer okay for him to be spending so much time with a man that he wasn't engaged to?
We haven't spent that much time together, Steve tried to reason with himself as he tied his running shoes. Even as his mind ran over the past month and a half, and of all the times the pair had ran in the mornings, or the few times in the evening when either had work in the morning. Or the visits to What's the Batter With You in an attempt to remain the Best Uncle Ever TM.
Scrubbing his hand over his face, Steve decided he'd cross that bridge if and, or when, he got to it. For now though, he had plans.
Since Vinnie was just as attached to Bucky as Steve was, he allowed Steve to clip his leash and lead him out of their apartment. Forgoing his car the way he had every other time, Steve walked towards the little cake shop.
Once he got there, however, the door to the cake shop was still locked. Assuming that Bucky was getting things ready for opening, Steve knocked on the door.
At the sound of Steve's knuckles against the glass, Bucky popped his head out from the back. Brows furrowed, Bucky quickly made his way towards the entrance. Instead of the typical athletic gear that Steve was accustomed to, Bucky was wearing jeans, What's the Batter With You t-shirt, and a purple apron that he was wiping his hands on.
Unlocking the door, Bucky asked, "What are you doing here?"
Steve's brows furrowed as he tried not to let Bucky's brush-off sting too much while he lamely stated, "It's Monday."
"I texted you," Bucky clarified, patting the apron for his phone. Turning to look at his shop, he found the phone on the counter beside the register and opened it. Sighing, Bucky commented, "I meant to text you."
"Oh," Steve worried his lower lip with his teeth.
"Oh," Bucky confirmed, tightening the scrunchie holding his hair in a messy bun. Rounding the counter to wash his hands, he explained, "It's completely hectic right now. Shuri has the flu, Tibby's at school, Darcy is out of the country, Becca's in labor, and over half of the twelve dozens of cupcakes for the Pride Senior Prom are ruined."
Earnestly, Steve suggested, "I know that I don't know much about baking, but is there any way that I can help?"
Bucky's head snapped over to him instantly, causing Steve to freeze like prey. With glassy eyes fighting to contain tears, Bucky asked, "You'd do that?"
"Of course," Steve nonchalantly agreed. Then, hoping that his absolute infatuation and fondness for the brunet wasn't written all over his face, Steve shrugged a shoulder and teased, "What else am I going to do? Everyone else is sleeping."
"Thank you," Bucky accepted. Already the tension began to leave his broad shoulders as he instructed, "Lock the door." Drying his hands, he spotted Vinnie and said, "It's against health code for him to be in the kitchen with us, but he can hang out upstairs."
Vinnie's tail wagged at that and Steve followed Bucky over to back door of the shop. Bucky made a sharp turn just outside of the door and unlocked another door before climbing up the staircase. Steve wasn't sure why it never dawned on him that Bucky's apartment might've been right above the cake shop. He just always assumed that the cake shop was a neutral place to meet up at before their run.
Bucky didn't stop at the landing of the open apartment. Instead, crossing the black and white checkered kitchen floor, past the retro purple fridge, to the sink. Pulling down a bowl from the cabinet, Bucky started filling it with water.
All the while, Steve's eyes roamed around the apartment. Trying to drink as much of it in as he could. Piecing together who Bucky really was with every old photo framed on the wall and the white lace curtains on the windows facing the street. Sci-fi books crowded the bookcases while horror films and Disney Princess classics lined the entertainment center. On the back of the gray corner sofa was a yellow crocheted blanket, and Steve was certain that the plants dotting the open floor plan were fake.
"You have a really nice place," Steve complimented, bringing his attention back to Bucky as the muscular brunet set the bowl of water on the kitchen floor.
"Thank you," Bucky grinned so largely that it crinkled his eyes. Looking around his apartment as well, he admitted, "I keep trying to convince Tony to move in here. But he owns a house, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense."
"That's a shame," Steve said, ignoring the way his stomach dropped at the mention of the luckiest man alive, aka Anthony Stark.
"It really is," Bucky agreed. Redirecting his attention back towards the bowl of water, he asked, "Will that be enough for right now?"
"Should be," Steve confirmed, unclipping Vinnie's leash.
Bucky's eyes were evaluating Steve when Steve righted himself, causing a blush to color his cheeks. Wondering if his possibly too-tight athletic top and shorts were too revealing. And although he wanted nothing more than to fidget, he refrained. After all, if Bucky knew that Steve caught him, would Bucky still look?
"Do you wanna change into something more comfortable?" Bucky asked, bringing his gaze to Steve's eyes.
Mind avoiding all the porn he'd seen with a premise just like this, Steve nervously chuckled and questioned, "What?"
Thinking over what he said, a beautiful red shaded Bucky's cheeks and he clarified, "To bake in. It can get pretty messy."
When Steve didn't say anything as he thought, Bucky headed down the short hallway to his right and entered the bedroom. Not sure if he was supposed to follow or not, Steve hesitantly crossed the apartment.
Holding up a spring green What's the Batter With You shirt, Bucky studied the garment and offered, "I'm not sure if it'll fit like your other shirts, but at least if you have a mishap with the food coloring, it won't stain your clothes."
Catching the tossed tee, Steve said, "Thanks."
"No problem," Bucky smiled and left his bedroom. Heading back for the stairs, he called over his shoulder, "I'll meet you in the kitchen!"

Roman was kneeling down to him as he said, a smile on his lips: "Tibby, I know that it is hard for you and I absolutely respect that, but Master sounds so much like you being a slave and that is the last thing that I want. It's Roman. Do you think you can do that?" Tibby was staring at him with big eyes but as soon as he realized that Roman was serious, he returned his smile, nodding his head, saying: "Yes I think I can do that. What can Tibby do for you?" Roman told the little house elf that you needed some of your clothes and asked him whether he could go to your dorm in order to get some and bring them to you. Tibby nodded in agreement and the next moment he was gone while you were staring at the spot, where he had stood just seconds before and that was empty now.
"Sorry about that.", Roman chuckled as he sat down next to you on the bed while you were shaking your head in disbelief. "You have a house elf?", you wanted to know with Roman responding: "Every teacher has one. Those are the same house elves, that prepare the food for everyone around here on a daily basis and that clean the castle, but there are certain house elves that respond to us on top. I really hate asking them for favors. I know that they love fulfilling them but ordering them around... I don't know, I just can't stand it."
"Of course not, you rather save that for your students, don't you?"
"Just for one in particular.", he winked at you as he could tell that you were clearly joking. You laughed out loud, before you wanted to know more seriously: "Do you think that Tibby will tell anyone about me being here? I mean not that I would mind if people knew, but I don't want that you get into trouble because of that." Roman shook his head as he pulled you closer, mumbling: "Don't worry. House elves certainly don't go around, spreading information like that. They are beyond loyal. And I really couldn't care less whether I'm in trouble or not. I love you and no-one can change that.“
As you opened your mouth for an answer, there was another loud noise and Tibby appeared again, holding a bunch of your clothes in his tiny hands. You got off the bed and moved over to him, kneeling down in front of him as he was holding the pile of clothes out to you. "Here Miss.", he squeaked as you took your clothes, smiling at the little creature in front of you, replying: "Thank you so much Tibby. You are a lifesaver." You were sure that he blushed slightly before he nodded his head and disappeared again.
"Looks like you abashed him.", Roman laughed as he watched you getting up while you shrugged your shoulders, giggling: "Yeah I have that effect on others." You looked at the pile in your hands, uncertain whether you should get dressed in front of him. Roman seemed to have noticed your hesitance, as he moved over to you, pulling you closer and giving you a soft kiss before he said: "I absolutely wouldn't mind seeing you naked once again that morning but if you prefer getting dressed in privacy, the bathroom is at the end of the floor."
"Getting dressed in front of you would probably mean missing all lectures for today indeed as we would certainly end up in bed again. So I'm not taking any risks, professor.", you said amused as you tiptoed to place a kiss on his cheek, whispering in his ear: "I'm right back." With that you headed for the bathroom, leaving Roman behind, only to return approximately 10 minutes later, announcing: "Okay I'm ready to go and prepared to let the day begin. Well kind of…“ You were absent minded playing with the necklace around your neck as you noticed Roman's amused expression. "What is it?", you wanted to know as he pointed to the pendant, that was falling between your breasts, stating: "You should keep that thing save forever and ever. If it wasn't for that..." You walked over to him, wrapping your hands around his neck as you smiled up to him, finishing his sentence: "There would be no us now. Sounds strange, huh?"
"I don't care how it sounds. I'm just glad that you are not grossed out by me and that you want to try it."
"I could never be grossed out by you, Ro. I'm grossed out and disgusted by all the things you had to experience, by everything you had to go through. But I certainly could never feel that for you. I love you and I have done so for quite a long time." He leaned down to you, capturing your lips in a sweet kiss, before he whispered as soon as you had broken the kiss: "I love you too, baby. More than my own life." You didn't want that moment to end, didn't want to let go of him, but it was as if the ticking of the clock got louder by any second, telling you that it was time to start into your days.
As if he had read your mind, Roman said: "We should probably get going baby girl." You nodded your head and with one last kiss, you made sure to slip through the door of his home as quietly as you could as soon as you were sure that the floor was empty, knowing that Roman would wait for a few minutes until he would head for the Great Hall in order to prevent gossip spreading like wildfire.
As you were heading for the Great Hall you were sure that you had the stupidest grin on your face, that others have ever spotted on you, but you couldn't help it. You were beyond happy and you were sure that no-one could bring you down, not after what had happened, not after you and Roman having become an item after those last three years you thought he hated you and vice versa. Once you entered the Great Hall you searched the other students there until you found your circle of friends, heading over to them. Much to your relief you figured that your ex-boyfriend was not part of them. As you sat down next to your best friend, you already prepared a lie why you hadn't returned to your dorm but apparently you didn't need it as she already said: "Morning Y/N. I hope you weren't too concerned since I wasn't home last night but I decided to sleep over in my boyfriend's dorm." You tried to hide a huge grin as you answered: "No no don't worry. It's all good. I hope you had a great time."
"A fantastic one.", she winked at you and you smiled politely, thinking to yourself that it probably wasn't as fantastic as the one you had.  You started filling the plate in front of you with some breakfast as one of your friends leaned over, saying: "How the hell have you survived yesterday? We felt so terrible for you when he asked you to dance with him." Your friend was nodding over to the teacher's table and you could see that Roman had just sat down on his usual seat, studying the breakfast in front of him. You stared at him for a moment and apparently he had noticed you doing so as he was lifting his head, holding your gaze, winking at you as soon as he was sure that no-one else was paying attention. You gave him a short smile before you turned back to your friend, that put some sausages on his plate, almost forgetting that he was waiting for your answer. You shrugged your shoulders as you said: "No need to feel sorry. He's a good dancer and he has been polite."
"Yeah but it's Reigns we are talking about. You-know-who's right hand. This dude probably kills people like you for fun if he feels like doing so."
"How about you start forming your own opinions instead of believing the stuff people like to spread just for the fun of it?", you hissed, not caring what your friend might think as you realized that the whole group got silent, giving you some strange looks. "Are you okay?", Y/BFF/N wanted to know as you just shrugged your shoulders, mumbling: "I'm as alright as I can be. I just can't stand stupid gossip and rumors and you all should know this by now. It simply isn't fair no matter who is concerned." Before you could talk yourself into rage, you were reminded that you were running late for your lecture in potions. You excused yourself and rushed to the lecture hall, knowing that Snape would be anything but happy if you arrived there too late.
The whole day went by rather unspectacular but as soon as it was time for you to head to the Great Hall for dinner, you realized that something seemed to be off. Although people still greeted you and were friendly all in all, you couldn't help but notice that they were sticking their heads together as soon as you had passed, obviously talking about you although you had no idea what they were saying and you actually weren't in the mood to figure it out either.
As you reached the Great Hall and moved over to your usual seat, you could already see your best friend's concerned face. You crooked an eyebrow as you fell down next to her, wanting to know: "What's wrong? You look as if you had seen a ghost."
"Are you alright?", she wanted to know almost quietly as you answered rather perplex: "Sure, why shouldn't I be?"
"Because of the rumors circling around about you." You noticed that she didn't feel comfortable in her own skin, as you questioned her: "What rumors? I have noticed that people were talking behind my back but I have no idea what they were talking about." You could tell that she wanted to tell you on the one hand and on the other she just wanted to be far away. "Come on Y/BFF/N, what rumors are you talking about?"
"The ones about you and Reigns."
"What the...?", you started, but before you could continue, you saw a shadow in front of you. As you peeked up all of your questions were basically answered as you looked into the furious face of your ex-boyfriend. Even if he couldn't know for sure what had happened, he obviously counted two and two together, and even if it wouldn't have been the truth, it would have nevertheless be enough for those rumors to spread like wildfire, so that probably everyone in Hogwarts had heard about it by now. You wanted to kill that asshole. It wasn't that you were ashamed or that you cared that people knew about it, but you felt absolutely sorry for Roman, fearing that he would face a huge backlash, that he would lose his position and that he would have to leave the castle and head into an uncertain future. And for that you wanted to punch that fucker, that used to be your boyfriend, in the face again and again.
You were holding his gaze as he leaned down to you, hissing: "How does it feel not being the teacher's pet anymore but having become the teacher's slut, Y/N?" You shot him a deathly glare as you gritted through your teeth: "Probably a lot better than having to kiss daddy's ass at the ministry so your lazy ass can make it through university with a lot of money financing certain things around here." You knew that you were right and you didn't care one bit whether you made things worse or not. Your table had become quiet by now, listening carefully to your exchange of words and as soon as the people in the rest of the hall were aware what was going on, you could have heard a needle being dropped.
You had no doubts that your ex had told everyone about last night, probably hitting the nail on the head more than he would have expected and you had no doubts either that whole Hogwarts was aware that it was the son of a rather important wizard at the Ministry of Magic spreading those rumors, making them more interesting than they probably would have been if someone without any reputation would have spread them. Although he had held his volume down in the beginning, so only your table could hear your exchange of words, your ex seemed to be of the opinion that whatever he had to say was to quite some interest for everyone in the Great Hall, students and teachers quite alike.
You had never seen an expression that hateful as he snapped at you, his voice increasing with every word he was saying: "So Y/N, I have to admit I'm rather curious. Curious and disgusted all at the same time.  After you had left me during the ball yesterday, rushing after Reigns until you were alone with him in his lecture hall... Have you been fucking him because you felt sorry for him or because you wanted to prove something to yourself? Oh no, wait... let me rephrase that. Has it been the first time you stepped so low or have you been fucking him for quite some time, probably to get all of those good grades, that you were after ever since? Whatever it was ,you’re just as disgusting as that asshole is and I can’t even believe that I’ve wasted time dating you. Tell me how does it feel if you have to step so low that you let you-know-who’s right hand bone you? Did it give you a good feeling, knowing that a pure blood was willing to screw a mud blood like you? No really, I can’t wait to hear the answer only a slut like you could give me.”
You were quite aware that all eyes were set on you although they were shifting between you and Roman constantly. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed that he had gotten up, his face murderous while Dumbledore reached out for his arm, probably telling him something that Roman was not willing to listen to as he immediately freed himself from the old wizard’s grip. You honestly didn’t care about the whole school respectively university knowing about you and Roman and you didn’t even care about their thoughts either. But you did care about the fact that this asshole in front of you dared to put the man you loved down the way he just did, you cared about him accusing Roman of being someone or rather something he was not, and no matter how much you were shaking with anger, you were not willing to just accept what you had heard. You were getting up slowly from your seat, coming face to face with your ex, locking eyes with him as you shot him one deathly glare after another. You didn't know whether you could trust your voice or whether it would betray you, so you took a deep breath before you icy replied: "Oh I'm sorry asshole, I seem to have missed your problem throughout the shit you were just vomiting. I just want to make one thing clear in advance. I take your accusation of me stepping so low as a personal offense and insult. If that was the case you would certainly know it as that would have meant that I would have been willing to sleep with you and we both know that this is not the case. So stepping so low definitely is off the table."
You could hear some of your friends chuckle while your ex boyfriend looked as if he wanted to murder you right then and there. You enjoyed the sight in front of you for a few moments as it gave you a sadistic satisfaction before you added: "And since it is obviously so much of your and anyone's concern around here, I'm gladly answering your question, dickhead. That is if someone, that means a lot to me, is content with it." You stopped as you looked at Roman, ignoring everyone around you while focussing on him only, asking silently for his permission, not caring what this could mean for you in the end. He was giving you a weak smile although you could tell that anger was radiating from every part of him, as he nodded his head in agreement.
You smiled back at him, before you turned your attention back to your ex boyfriend, every expression of politeness gone again as you said loud and clearly: "I'm certainly not dropping to your standard as you clearly are missing a whole bunch of manners, fuckface. I was sleeping with him for one reason and one reason only and that will probably disgust you even more now than you could imagine, given how limited your horizon is. I was sleeping with him because I love him. Because I'm - contrary to you and a lot of other people here - are willing to see beyond the surface, am willing to ignore rumors and learn things for myself. And if anyone of you had the decency to make up your own minds instead of relying on gossip, that's being spread, you would be able to figure out on your own that things are not always the way they seem and that persons aren't always what you want them to be. So I have to disappoint you, it was neither for grades, nor anything else. But how should you understand something like that? Someone that is desperate enough to pay women to sleep with him? And I'm pretty sure a few people around here can confirm that since it had become an inside joke by now. And for the rest of you, that was eagerly listening now, probably already thinking how you can tell your parents and friends at home how scandalous it is that a student had been sleeping with her professor, I can assure you that you can run away right now sending your owls home because there is nothing more to hear than what you had just heard. Although I would really appreciate if you would all grow a beautiful set of balls and have the guts to actually say it to my face if you feel the urge to hear about the truth behind a rumor than just continuing discussing it behind my back. I can assure you it's certainly more satisfying for you if you hear the truth directly from me. So is there anything else you need to know, asshole, or do you mind if I continue with my day as staring at your stupid face bores me to the bone?"
You had no idea whether he wanted to insult you more, had no idea what he had in mind, but somehow he suddenly felt the urge to leave sooner than later. He shot a murderous look at you as he hissed for everyone to hear: "You are going to pay for that, you little slut. You can be sure about that." You crooked an eyebrow as you wanted to know: "Is that a threat or a promise? Should it be the latter one, don't make any promises that you can't keep in the end." With that the conversation was over for you as you sat down back to your seat, ignoring him as you took a sip from your water. He slammed his hands on the table as he snapped: "It's a promise and I'm going to keep it." before he turned around, leaving the Great Hall as fast as he could, leaving everyone stunned while doing so.
You took a deep breath, trying somehow to keep your composure after what had just happened. You realized that the silence in the Great Hall vanished bit by bit and that there were a few noises here and there, probably discussing what you had just stated for everyone to hear, but you didn't care. Although it felt good having gotten it off your chest, there was nevertheless that tiny feeling of fear inside of you. You were scared, scared that you had made things worse for Roman, scared that he had to face the consequences now after your ex- boyfriend made sure that everyone knew that he was sleeping with one of his students. You didn't care much for your own consequences ,however. You were an adult, you could make your own decisions and you didn't regret them one bit. And even if you were expelled now, since that behavior would not be accepted by the headmaster, you couldn't care less.
Of course, you needed your degrees to pursue the profession you were following for such a long time, but you were quite sure that there were other ways to achieve it and Hogwarts was not the only option you had. The only thing, that would have hurt with you being expelled, would be the fact, that you wouldn't be around anymore, wouldn't be able to see Roman on a daily basis although you were aware that this wouldn't be the case either once your last year was wrapped.
You didn't even care to pay attention to your friends, didn't care to see their reactions. It wouldn't surprise you if they turned their backs on you as they would probably see you as a disgrace now since a few of them didn't bother making their decisions based on their own opinion but would rather adapt to those of others. You just hoped that your best friend wouldn't be like that as she meant a lot to you and losing her would certainly hurt.
You were staring down at the food in front of you, trying to blend out all of the noises, the whispered words surrounding you, until you realized that they were suddenly gone, that everyone had turned silent from one moment to the next. You were bracing yourself as you expected your ex-boyfriend to have returned in order to continue where he had stopped before, but much to your surprise you felt a gentle touch at your back before a hand was resting on your shoulder. You didn't even have to look to know who it was as you were reaching for the hand, cupping it with your own as you heard Roman's deep voice say: "Thank you so much." You could tell that it was coming from the bottom of his heart as you turned around, smiling up at him, answering: "Anytime."
You wished that you and him were alone, that the Great Hall was magically empty because you could see how much your ex's words must have pained him and you wanted to make sure that he was alright, but you knew that this wasn't possible. You were aware, that everyone was staring at the both of you, as you slowly got up, leaving your seat, standing before him, mumbling: "I'm feeling like an animal in a zoo. I guess leaving doesn't sound like a bad option. What do you say?" He was giving you a sad smile and much to your surprise he obviously didn't care much about his surroundings as he leaned down, placing a soft kiss on your lips, not caring about all of the gasping around him as he answered: "I say that it sounds like a perfect plan to me."
You were smiling up at him, your heart dropping just seconds later as you heard the unique voice of the headmaster behind you. "Roman. Y/N. Please follow me to my office, will you?", Dumbledore said and in the first moment panic threatened to take you over as you thought that everything would be destroyed now. Roman squeezed your hand in reassurance as he whispered: "It's going to be alright, baby. I promise." With that he turned around, facing the old wizard, saying: "Of course Albus." Dumbledore took the lead as Roman was following him, holding your hand while doing so.
When you were about to pass your friends, you felt a gentle touch on your arm. As you looked down it was your best friend smiling up at you, whispering: "Don't worry, everything will be alright. Although we might have our prejudices against him, you can count on us. You are our friend and we are having your back no matter what and no matter who you decide to love." You couldn't even tell how much this meant to you as you looked into the faces of your friends, that were nodding in unison, even the ones, where you thought that they would abandon you right away. You felt how you were tearing up as you whispered: "Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me." She squeezed your arm one more time before you were passing her completely.

Lockdown, the prequel
It’s been a while… too long, if you want to know. And oh how things have changed in that time, for the good or bad, I’ll leave you to answer for yourself. For me, the lockdown, now pretty much over here in London, gave me some time, probably a little too much, to reflect on things.
I’ve spent the last 12 or so weeks holed up with friends I made towards the end of last summer. Seemed like a brilliant idea at the start, and while it had its tumultuous moments and occasional bouts of violence, it’s come to an end and I’m a little sad about it.
It began in December with the winning of a contract for some new work. My big mouth got me involved in a project for Mel, my friend Zac’s partner. A conversation in the pub about her work and the project she was hoping to start, an AI type thing which sounded interesting. I questioned her about it, the purpose and goals, posed a few arguments and then spent some time picking holes into the details of her agency’s proposal. She was pissed at me, it was justified, but her position of supposed superiority in our conversation needed some balancing. I must’ve hit a chord because I was invited to deliver my proposal to her superiors, which I performed with slightly less drunken energy and rant, but a little more professionalism, and that saw me sign a contract a week later to begin in the new year. With 4-6 months of work lined up for the new year, I felt relaxed but didn’t take my foot off. I bought a flight back to New York to pick up possessions and make my London stay less transient. Three days was enough to catch up with those that could free up time in their schedules, what with the run into Christmas. It was fruitful but felt somewhat alien to be back, the relief and tension washed through me when I left. I also timed the visit so I could complete my RTW ticket, that untaken last leg to LA and my friend Araya. I thanked her again, this time in person with a bear hug, for helping me out of that hole last year. She is in a hole herself now, recently separated, with a divorce, probably a messy one, on the way. Love turned sour. It’s a long story for a time when lawyers have finished picking over carcasses. Our time was also brief but enough to reaffirm each other we’re OK and we’re both there to support the other. 5 days all in and I was jet-streaming back across the Atlantic saying adieu to the US, for how long I didn’t know. The immediate winter holidays were spent back in Austria, my crew regrouped to collect and scatter ashes in the only place befitting of our good friend Tibby, the mountains. We had 10 days of sun and powder on the slopes, coupled with some sentimentality, lots of drinking and other goodies. It was a grand farewell, and my good friend can rest in peace across the slopes of the white ring. Anna and I returned to Vienna and everyone else went everywhere else. I had a date to go on, and serious conversation to have with my host, nothing bad, all good.
My date (Emily) and I had spoken occasionally in the time between now, and our shared flight the last time I was here. She was someone I was keen to see again in the flesh. The more I’ve spoken to her, the more attracted I’ve become to her. When we actually met it felt a little like we were the protagonists of a blind date. I felt awkwardly nervous, reciprocating a vibe I was receiving from her. We settled into it eventually, the distraction presented itself in the form of a pretty awesome Vietnamese spread, followed by a long walk in the cold, crisp night to a cosy bar on the edge of the city centre. I have no idea where because I was lost in her stories and her. We stayed until closing, which came about all too quickly. I didn’t want to go but she'd called it, citing work reasons. I was pretty sure nothing intimate was going to happen between us, not on that night anyway. I was in no position to invite her back to Anna’s, and she gave no invitational signals to go to hers. I was fine with it, there would be another opportunity. We said goodbye at her taxi, with an unexpected lustful kiss which had belied her earlier demeanour. I had a momentary feeling of loss as the door closed and the car pulled away, and I watched it for the short distance before it turned a corner and was gone, waiting for my boner to flake. We are still in touch and will see each other again when the circumstances permit. The more I thought about the evening on my journey home I had the impression she had been hiding something. The erratic movement in her eyes, never resting for a moment, always scanning, like looking for danger. I told Anna about the date over dinner the next night, her appraisal was to tell me with almost certainty that Emily has a partner. This had me thinking, but I parked it, as it was time to talk to Anna. She still needed to unwind a bit so she cracked another bottle of red. She's adjusted to her widow's life with a degree of resignation, but she’s moving on, with some worries. Time away has made her see new horizons and she’s up for those, but she has a baby and that’s her foremost responsibility, so everything else has to take a back seat, for a while at least. I’ve told her not to give up and that she will find someone else, or someone will more likely find her first, and love will start again. Anna smiled at this and it was then I told her about the plans I’d made to help her out financially. I told her a little white lie, namely the company Tibby and I had been partners in still held all my share of the profits we’d made, and invested it had grown enough to provide a salary/pension, and I was giving it to her. She was gobsmacked, and then she cried a lot, hugging me furiously, thanking me profusely. Don’t get me wrong I haven’t given her a fortune, but it’s enough that she can get by on if she needs to stop work or something. There was money still tied to that company but it was only a couple hundred bucks, i topped it up.
I thought about Emily on my journey to London and my course of action is to ask her the partner question and put me straight. If she is then I know it and can deal with it, it won't be like before. I've yet to ask, something in me doesn't want to know. Maybe I'm scared that by asking she won't want to talk any more. No one wants to be caught in deception, it's embarrassing for all concerned. When travel restrictions have reached some level of normality she is coming to London, primarily for work with the promise to stay for an extra day, so I've decided I will ask her in person and face the outcome head-on. In the meantime, I’ll work out whether another long-distance relationship is worth it.

Rae of Sunshine- Chapter 1 Challenge Accepted
Pairing: Eric/ OC
Fandom: Divergent
Rating: M
Summary: Rae thought Amity was where she belonged. Even with her dark past fuming inside of her, she had always done her best to suppress it. With Choosing Day approaching she was confident in her decision to stay in Amity. That is until a certain Dauntless Leader came roaring into Amity's gates. Once Eric has Rae in his sights he is willing to do anything to have her, even if that means breaking her and destroying the world she lives in.
A/N: Here’s the first chapter! Warning its a little long:) Hope you enjoy!
word count: 9,362
There were so many things going through Rae’s mind as she picked peaches and lightly tossed them in her bucket, never missing. With the Jovial Festival, her birthday, and choosing day approaching she could hardly focus on what Tibby was saying.
“Rae?.... Rae. Hello? Are you in there” Tibby buzzed as she knocked on Rae’s head trying to get clarification that she was listening. “Sorry,” Rae uttered fluttering Tibby’s hand away from her forehead. “There’s just so much coming up, I’ve kind of been out of my zone lately.” She admitted while taking in a deep breath hoping it would help clear her mind.
“I’ll say! Look at your bucket. It’s been over flooded with peaches for the past ten minutes.” She giggles as she points to the mountain of peaches tumbling down from Rae’s bucket. “Man!” She groaned in frustration. “Hey at least you met your ‘quota’ for today,” Tibby declared winking at Rae. “Look being that I am a good friend I’ll take half of your peaches off your hands,” she says giving Rae a mischievous smile. Rae could only laugh and shake her head. “Thanks. I do most of the work and you take half of the credit, yeah good friend you are.” She playfully sneered.
Tibby proceeded to pluck a peach from Rae’s bucket and examined it for a second. She then continued to take a bite out of the perfectly, juicy peach, letting the juice drizzle down the sides of her mouth while smiling. “Yep, that’s how this friendship works. You work and I grace you with my company!” She dramatically proclaimed. “Okay lazy. Let's get these peaches to the warehouse before Daniel thinks we ate them all like we did the strawberries.” Rae nudged. Tibby stood up defiantly putting a finger in the air, “I regret nothing from that day! I felt so ‘Dauntless!’” She proudly proclaimed. The girls then evenly distributed the peaches into each of their buckets. Soon after Tibby swung her arm around Rae’s shoulder as they made their way back to the warehouse where Daniel would surely be waiting.
Daniel was eight years older than Rae and Tibby. Being an Erudite transfer it was only natural to give him a job having to do with analyzing and recording data in Amity. He was one of the members in charge of overseeing the amount of crops that came into the warehouse and how to evenly distribute it to all of the factions. He was a very scrawny fellow with short black hair and glasses. He didn’t look as intimidating as most Erudites did Rae thought, but he sure did act like one even being in Amity. But Amity was all about peace and acceptance, overlooking anyone’s past and looked to make a better future in harmony.
Rae often wondered if Daniel’s aptitude test said Amity and that was why he transferred. A lot of Erudites trusted the aptitude test and would follow the test even though they had the choice to choose whichever faction they wanted. When a person transfers to another faction they’re suppose to drop their old faction’s way and accept their new faction’s way of life.
Daniel, however, was still connected to his erudite roots. He would become very displeased when someone, specifically Rae and Tibby didn’t reach their “quota.” He would then insist adding extra hours to their shift as punishment. This new rule made everyone displeased because Amity usually tried to reframe from harsh punishment. More were shocked however when Johanna agreed to this new rule. No one understood why Johanna agreed to this new rule, no one but, Rae. She could see the Johanna was under a lot of stress because of the harvest not being fruitful as it has been in the past. Being the head of the faction that was to feed not only them, but also the rest of the factions. It was her face that would either be rewarded or blamed.
As the girls approached Daniel and his clipboard, they were greeted in a very “Erudite” way. “Hello Ladies. Did we actually meet our quota today?” he asked not taking his eyes of his precious clipboard. “Yep! Tibby only ate one peach this time.” Rae answered smirking at Tibby who was giving her an irritated look. This was payback for the peaches. Daniel shot his head up from his clipboard glaring at Tibby. Push the rim of his glasses up his nose he started at Tibby, “Do I need to reiterate to you how vital it is to gather the correct amount of supplies to nourish all five of the factions. One of the most important essentials for human life is to have a proper amount of subsistence’s. Now let me put that on a large-scale problem. That peach could quite possibly be the reason one faction has a shortage of food putting Amity in a crisis….” Tibby stopped him before he could go any further explaining how one peach could cause the ending of the world, “It was one peach, Danny! Plus I reached your ‘quota’ so go suck on some peace serum why don’t ya!” She said walking off fatigued from listening to him. Rae shrugged her shoulders giggling as she followed after Tibby.
“I just don’t understand. How can that be a member of Amity?” Tibby fumed. “I heard it was on his aptitude test and so that’s what he solemnly went by,” Rae answered while trying to keep up with Tibby’s pace. Tibby then slowed down her pace seeing how urgent she was moving, she then calmed herself before speaking “A true Erudite then. I wonder what our test will say? What do you think yours will say?” Rae could feel her worry flow back to her “I don’t know. Amity probably.”
Tibby could see Rae didn’t want to talk any further of the future, so she quickly changed the subject, “So are you nervous about singing at the festival?” Rae shot a look at Tibby and gasped. “Please don’t remind me.” She begged. Tibby patted her on the back and tried to reassure her “Oh come on. You have such a beautiful voice even if you don’t let anyone hear it. You’ll do great!” Rae just stared at the ground kicking a rock, “I know it's just the song I plan on singing is different from the Amity vibe.” She confessed. Tibby just nudged at Rae, “I’m sure it’ll be great! Besides Amity needs to experience other emotions once in a while.” Rae smiled and felt reassured thanks to her friend, “Well get ready then. I have to go meet Joshua to practice. Ill see you later.” Tibby eyebrows raised and containing a huge grin on her face, “Hmmm Joshua I hope you’re getting a lot of practice time in if you know what I mean.” She said in a menacing way. Rae just rolled her eyes and began to walk in the opposite direction, “Shut up” she murmured.
Rae had known Joshua since they were babies learning to walk. They used to make mud pies together while their parents worked in the fields. They played tag, stole cookies, and shared childish secrets as all little ones did. They were sweethearts, as most people would point out when watching the two stroll through the fields hand in hand with Rae carrying an array of wild flowers. The two shared a deep-seated bond as children. But all of that changed when Rae’s parents perished in the warehouse fire. After that night, Rae was never the same. She became closed off to almost everyone around her. It wasn’t until she was twelve that she started letting people back in her life, but by that point, she had built a barrier between her and Joshua. As they got older, they ran in different crowds only glancing a smile at each other from afar. Rae wanted things to be back the way they were before the fire, she wanted Joshua by her side, her true side.
As the festival approached, it was Poppy who had volunteered Rae, against her will, to sing one of her songs. She didn’t want to sing in front of all Amity by herself, luckily for her, Joshua was skilled when it came to the guitar. She knew this would be her only opportunity to get closer to Joshua before Choosing Day. So she bucked up her courage and walked straight up to Joshua and asked if he would be willing to help her with the music for her song. Reluctantly, Joshua gave her an enthusiastic yes.
Rae saw Joshua as the perfect man for her. Hell, he was the perfect man any Amity woman. He was tall, built with lean muscles giving him a masculine figure. His dark wavy hair, along with his well-groomed beard only complimented his features. It was Joshua’s eyes that made Rae go weak in the knees. Having golden brown allowed anyone to get lost in them. They were full of hope and kindness, which is what Rae needed. He was truly a divine specimen. Never showing an ounce of bitterness towards anyone in all his life. He was full of compassion and was gentle with everyone and everything.
He worked in the fields usually doing more heavy lifting than most. Rae usually kept her distance, watching him in awe. She would watch as his muscles flexed while plowing the fields or as his sweat would soak the back of his shirt, allowing an outline of his back muscle to shine through.
She would be lying if she said she wasn’t nervous about their first practice they had. She’d have to sing in front of him, the only people she’d let hear her sing were Poppy, Johann, and Tibby. Occasionally someone would catch her singing while walking past her, without her knowledge. Now she had to sing in front of the man who had the capability to take her breath away. This was harder than she initially thought.
The very first time Rae tried to sing in front of Joshua, she opened her with no words circulating out. Embarrassed and disappointed, tears began to form. How was she supposed to sing in front of the whole faction and when she couldn’t even sing in front of Joshua? She was about to make a hasty getaway towards the exit when she felt Joshua's arms wrap around her waist. Her eyes soon met his as she felt the wind get knocked out of her. “Hey, it’s okay. Take a deep breath and let it out. I’m right here Rae. You can do it. I believe in you.” And that was all he had to say to her. From then on practices became easier for Rae. With Joshua’s guitar skills and Rae’s talented voice, the song was coming together quite nicely.
She couldn’t help but smile when she thought of Joshua. They were rebuilding their friendship that she hoped to become something more. She began to fear with the festival approaching that would mean no more practices with Joshua. Rae wouldn’t have an excuse to spend time with Joshua. She began to wonder if he felt the same way about her as she did for him. Rae couldn’t tell with Joshua because he was very much Amity. He was always friendly and not afraid to give a caring touch to anyone. But there had to be deeper feelings with her she thought. To find out the truth Rae had put it on herself to make the first move at the festival. It couldn’t be a more perfect plan the festival would have a tranquil, romantic atmosphere for Rae to make her move. There would also be music, dancing and most importantly a shit ton of wine, along with a hefty supply of peace serum if need be.
Rae smiled to herself before entering the assembly hall. She could already hear Joshua tuning his guitar, but instantly stop when she came into his view. Joshua’s smile was so warm and inviting Rae couldn’t help but blush. There was no real reason for Rae to be so nervous she was an absolutely beautiful girl.
Many have said Rae strongly resembled her mother having warm ivory skin that was touched by the sun. Her soft golden brown waves framed her face well with her strong bone structure reaching all the way down to her waist. Rae’s eyes were probably the only physical trait she inherited from her father. They were piercing green, giving her the advantage when facing anyone if she would only realize it. She had always shied away because her figure. Much of Amity's women were small and petite not having much of a curve to their bodies. Thanks to her genetics and help from working in the fields, she acquired a strong hourglass figure. She had always been self-conscious about her hips, feel all eyes go to her lower region. Anything she wore only extenuated them, making her feel like a thing of meat around men. Except Joshua, he would always look straight into her emerald globes making her feel comfortable in her own skin.
Walking up to the platform, the lighting from the windows hit Rae perfectly enhancing her features. “Rae, I thought you quit the band for a second.” He joked while lifting his arms. “You would have a sorry band,” she answered examining the empty stage with a grin. “Besides I would never leave you to fend for yourself with only your guitar. Plus we both know I’m the only real talent here.” She teased. “No argument there,” he winked.
They soon finished practicing, establishing harmony with his guitar and her vocals. The day had turned to dusk and Joshua offered to walk Rae home to which she graciously accepted. The walk to Rae’s house was quiet, which made Rae anxious. She wanted to say something so she could stop the awkward silence, but when she looked to Joshua to speak he looked content with the silence so she kept forward in silence.
Once the house was in view Rae couldn’t take it anymore. “Joshua, do you think people will like the song?” she asked nervously looking to him for consolation. “Of course! They’re going to love it, Rae.” He said.
“You don’t think the songs too…I don’t know gloomy? It’s just not the Amity way. I don’t want to ruin the festival or anything. Maybe we should change the song and do something happier. Oh God, I don’t know ” She fretted covering her face with her hands in exhaustion.
“Rae,” he spoke softly taking her hands into his, “Your song is beautiful, and everyone’s going to love it. I love it and I’ve been wanting to tell you how glad I am that you asked me to play with you, Rae.”
Rae tried to control her breathing the best she could. “Thank you. I’m glad you wanted to play with me. I was nervous you’d say no, honestly.” She admitted. “I’d never say no to you Rae. I kind of wish we could have done this sooner.” He said. Rae felt her eyes swell with tears, but held them in. “I know. I was just nervous because I stopped talking to you or really everyone after my parents accident.” She said.
Joshua took a step closer towards Rae closing any space between them and cupped Rae’s cheek. “Rae, I never stopped thinking about you after that day.” She felt her heart skip a beat, trying to find the words to say back and all she could say was “Goodnight.” Joshua smiled and leaned in kissing her cheek. “Goodnight Rae.” He said as he started walking backwards still looking at Rae. Rae turned to open the door when Joshua called out to her again. ”Hey Rae! Save me a dance?” Rae just bit her lip smiling and gave him a nod. He then winked at her and turned to walk away.
Once Rae shut the door she could help but squeal with excitement. She kept rubbing her cheek trying to remember the sensation of Joshua’s lips. She wondered what it would’ve felt like if he had kissed her on the lips. She had never been kissed before and she now was planning on Joshua to be her first kiss and hopefully her first everything. The festival was her chance and she was going to take it.
It took her a moment to snap back to reality when she heard voices coming from the kitchen. As she inched more and more towards the kitchen she recognized the voices as Poppy and Johanna. Of course, she thought to herself, as she was about to make her appearance known she stopped as she began to listen.
“I just don’t know what to do Poppy. Everything feels like its all happening at once. I don’t know how much more we can take it.” She vented. “Don’t worry Jo. It’ll all work out in the end, it always does. We’ve faced hardships before and we’ll do it again.” Poppy tried to be encouraging as he always was, a true Amity. “It’s different this time. Poppy Daun…” Rae couldn’t take it anymore; she came bursting through the door stunning Poppy and Johanna.
“Rae! Where have you been? We didn’t hear you come in.” Poppy said. “I just got back from rehearsing with Joshua. What’s going on?” she questioned with worry all over her face. “Oh rehearsing with Joshua. You two are getting pretty close.” Johanna was trying to defer Rae’s question, but before Rae could protest Poppy jumped in. “Joshua? Don’t tell me I need to start watching the fields more closely now.” Johanna laughed “It's not a bad idea with the two making googlie eyes at each other”
“We don’t make ‘googlie’ eyes at each other.” She mumbled. “Is everything okay seriously.”
Johanna stood up from her seat quickly, giving Rae a smile “Oh everything’s fine. We were just discussing the festival. Oh! my I should go it’s getting late.” She walked over to the doorway to where Rae was standing. She gently took Rae’s head bending it down to plant a kiss on her forehead. “Goodnight Rae. Don’t worry everything’s fine. You should get some sleep as well. I can’t have you slacking in the orchard tomorrow.” Rae gave her a smile and nodded her head. Johanna laughed to herself taking Rae in a hug. “Oh my child, I love you. Goodnight and goodnight Poppy, you old mule.” She laughed turning to walk out the house. “Goodnight,” Rae called out watching as Johanna walked out the door. She then turned her attention to Poppy, who was leaning against the counter.
Rae gave Poppy a concerning look to which he shrugged “What?” he said trying to push pass the subject. “You must be starving! Here! How about some fire roasted veggie soup.” He didn’t wait for her to answer moving swiftly through the kitchen pouring the steaming hot soup into a bowl gesturing her to sit. Rae moved into the chair with her eyebrow still raised knowing Poppy was avoiding her curiosity. He finally sat down with his own serving looking very pleased with himself. Without any hesitation, he took a spoonful of the scalding hot soup. After attempting to swallow the searing liquid, he quickly went looking for any type of beverage to take the heat away from his already burnt tongue. Rae burst out with laughter at the scene that was unfolding in front of her.
“Poppy, why don’t you let the soup cool before you go and dive into it? You’ll burn your tongue then who else is Johanna going to gossip with!” Rae giggled. Poppy grinned at Rae as he swallowed the hot soup. “Sweet Pea you forget. I’m a great listener!” he said in a matter-of-fact tone. Rae watched the old man continue to burn his mouth while still smiling at her. For a wise man he sure did act like a child Rae thought.
With a mouthful of the roasted veggie soup, Poppy attempted to have a conversation with Rae. “So how are rehearsals going with…what is it James?” he muddled. “His name is Joshua and they're going quite well as a matter of fact.” She stated stirring her soup.
“Well that’s good. I don’t have to worry about ole Joshie do I? I maybe an old Amity, but I could bring out my Dauntless side if need be.” He babbled. “Maybe you should take a double dose of peace serum. I have no doubt in your capabilities.” She cracked.
“Hey my dauntless side comes in handy. Especially when breaking a stallion. That’s what all men are like and you remember that too. When you find Mr. Right, break him it’ll be better in the long run. All men think they’re better off running a muck being assholes…”
“Poppy!” Rae gasped. “I’m serious Rae. Men are horrible only a good woman can straighten them out.” Poppy said sternly. “I’ll keep that in mind Poppy, but I don’t think I’m going to have to break him.” Rea gushed.
“Well then where’s the fun, where’s the challenge? Let me tell you, your grandma got a hold on this stud and I thought I put up a good fight, though. But she broke me, broke me good too.” He reminisced while smiling. “Okay Poppy can we please talk about something else. Please. Anything.” She begged, feeling embarrassed. “I’m just telling you, Sweet Pea, the best love is the fighting kind.” Rae just looked off hoping to move on from the subject.
“Oh alright! I’ve heard a lot of people are excited about you singing. Some people said they didn’t even know you could sing. Why don’t you sing more often, you have such a beautiful voice.” Not the subject Rae wanting to discuss, she stood up taking the empty bowls to the sink keep her back to Poppy. “Wow! I’m exhausted, aren’t you? I better get to bed.”
“Before she could even try to wash the dishes, Poppy came up right beside her looking down at her. “Your parents would be extremely proud of the young lady you’ve become.” He spoke softly. Trying to keep the tears from forming she through her arms around him, placing her head gently on his broad chest. “I wish they were here,” she whispered. “Me too Sweet Pea. Me too.”
“You go on. I’ll tidy up around here. Goodnight sweet heart, I love you.” He kissed her head before releasing her. Rae made her way through the kitchen before turning to Poppy. “Night Pop Pop.” Rae smiled.
“Goodnight Sweet Pea.”
Rae made her way through the house to her room. Once the door was closed she took down the rest of her hair, running her fingers through her soft waves. She walked to her bed stripping her clothes off, replacing them with her nightgown. As she crawled into her bed Rae snuggled herself between the soft cotton sheets.
She looked out the window behind her bed to gaze at the stars. Rae usually stared at the stars to help her go to sleep. It's what her parents would do before tucking her in at night. Her father would point out all the different kinds of constellations and tell her stories. While her mother would point out falling stars so they could make wishes together. Her mother had a ritual for making wishes with Rae. You had to keep your eyes shut tight while holding your breath for five seconds. You had to think long and hard to focus on your wish or else it wouldn’t come true. After that five seconds, you had to take a deep breath in and then slowly let it out. Rae and her mother would do this every night. Shortly after her parents died, Rae stopped this ritual.
As a child, being told a wish would come true by this ritual, only to have her hope crushed when she realized she couldn’t wish her parent’s backs. Rae wished every night for a month after the accident for her parents to walk through the door. Rae thought maybe if she were to hold her breath longer and think hard that would be the solution but all it did was turn her face blue and causes more migraines. She finally gave up feeling anger and resentment towards her parents for lying to her. They told her if she wished hard enough it would come true. When they died it killed Rae inside but when her hope was crushed it completely changed her.
And so that anger inside of Rae grew uncontrollably. She began shutting everyone out. Most people thought that Rae was just grieving over her loss, but underneath her rage boiled. She hated everyone around her, she hated how happy and content everyone else was. She had felt that at one time and had it ripped away from her. She would wonder how everyone could go about their lives with what had happened. She wanted them to feel what she felt but knew that would be impossible as she was in Amity where everything was peaceful and loving. Their world kept turning as Rae’s stood still.
A couple of months after her parents passing, Rae wondered off to the edge of Amity towards the fence. She stumbled upon an area that looked like a war zone; covered in broken bottles, scrap metal, and other dispensable junk. It was here where Rae would let herself go.
She would break, kick, and punch anything that was in her way. And it would be dangerous for anyone to try and interrupt her. This was her hazardous zone. It was here where Rae saw the destruction she was capable of. After her outburst of rage was over she would walk back to Amity as if nothing had occurred.
One day Rae decided to go purge herself, not knowing a pair of eyes were watching her. Once she had made it to her destruction site, she let the real Rae out. She found what look to be an old, rusted crow bar. She then came to an old broke down car covered in moss and roots. It looked like the car had tried to escape the destruction of the war that happened so long ago. It didn’t take her long to cause her own destruction to the old abandoned car. She wailed as she began pounding the car. Smashing the windows, diminishing the body of the old Junker. But using the crow bar wasn’t enough for Rae; she soon started using her fist to pummel rest of the car. She cried out with every punch she threw. Rae crouched down to the pounding her fist into broken glass bottles. Her hands became numb to the pain, which is the opposite of what she wanted. She wanted to feel the pain flow out of her. She picked up the shards of the shattered bottles and began clenching them in already damaged hands. This furthered the bottle fragments into her palms, being coated with her own blood and dirt. She finally felt the pain flow through her causing her bellow out her rage and cry clutching her broken palms to her chest.
All the sudden, she felt arms loop around her small fragile body. Rae looked up with her tear burning eyes only to find Johanna’s caring face. Rae wept in Johanna's arms at what seemed to be hours before Johanna cradled her and took her back to the Amity compound. When they made it back to the Amity Johanna took her straight to her own cottage. She didn’t say a word to Rae; she just smiled softly and began cleaning and repairing Rae’s crippled hands. She gently wiped the blood from Rae’s little palms. Johanna then carefully wrapped her injuries in pure white gauze. She hoped Rae’s hands would heal over time, but she knew Rae would carry the scars on her hand for the rest of her life.
Little Rae kept her head down, knowing that what she did wasn’t the Amity way. Johanna took Rae’s chin making her meet eye to eye. She only gave her a reassuring smile and held up a special cup of tea. Rae was hesitant but reluctantly took the cup sipping it little by little. She could feel the drowsiness come over her and soon drifted off. When she woke up she found herself in her bed.
She crept out of her room to see if Johanna was there and sure enough she was with Poppy in the kitchen in deep discussion, no doubt about her. Rae kept herself quiet concentrate on what they were saying.
“I don’t know what to do Johanna. I mean what can I do? I can’t stop her from feeling.”
“If you only saw her today, Poppy. I’ve never witnessed anything like it from a child. It was petrifying. Poppy, I’m scared she’s going to hurt herself or… someone else.” Poppy looked up at Johanna with tears streaming down his face.
“My poor little Rae.” He sobbed burying his face in his hands. Rae felt sick to her stomach. She didn’t know how much she could hurt someone, but after seeing Poppy she realized she didn’t want to hurt anyone. But along with that Rae didn’t know how to control it; she couldn’t help what she was feeling.
“Poppy, I think there’s a way to help her. Make her drink this it’ll help control her rage.” She said slipping a bag to Poppy. Poppy inspected the bag unsure of its contents. “What is it?”
“It’s a special type of peace serum.”
“Peace serum? Johanna, she’s only a child,” he said hold the bag.
“Trust me Poppy you don’t want to see the child I saw today, you don’t want it and I don’t want it. And you know Rae’s parents wouldn’t want it either.” She pleaded. Poppy took a deep breath, “You're right. It's what’s best for Rae.”
Rae made a decision that she wouldn’t fight Poppy when he placed the peace tea in front of her. Johanna was right it was to keep her and most importantly other safe. Rae would drink it and experience a calming peace. She would mellow out and would be back to her bubbly self. Poppy would decrease her dosage, as she got older and only give her more when she felt that bubbling inside her.
Rae never likes to think about her childhood, it was a dark part of her life. She’s tries to block it out and when she feels it creeping back in she’ll suppress it with some strong peace tea. Rae was dependent on her peace tea. Anytime she felt her rage boil inside of her she would run to her saving grace. Being in Amity, there was hardly a reason to become angry. Right? Rae didn’t think much of it and drifted to sleep.
The next morning was like any other morning for Rae. Poppy was usually gone before Rae was up. She would take her time and shower. She would be working in the apple orchard today so she wanted to wear something light and loose. So she went with a cream colored tank top, with a long red skirt with a slit that ended at her thigh. She let her hair air dry into her signature loose curls.
Poppy usually left Rae breakfast before he left along with her peace tea. Today he left her favorite, French toast with powdered sugar, drizzled with warm syrup. Unfortunately, Rae was running late, which wasn’t unusual, so she crammed a piece of French toast in her mouth and downed it with her peace tea. Then she was out the door.
Tibby was waiting for her as usually, patiently leaning against a tree staring at her cuticles. As Rae approached Tibby looked up unsurprised.
“I here by nominate you Amity’s new Miss Punctuality.” She smirked. “I know. I’m sorry it was a slow morning.” Rae apologized. “Hey! I’m not mad. Now I can’t say the same for our friend Mr. Daniel.” Tibby joked.
The girls made there toward the warehouse dreading their encounter with Daniel.
“So is there a reason for your lateness this time? Not getting enough sleep? Dreaming about a certain someone?” Tibby nudged. “No! I just have a lot on my mind.” Rae smiled.
“Oh you’re a horrible liar, you know that.” Rae really was a horrible liar; she always wore the truth on her face.
“Okay maybe I dreamt last night about a certain kiss I shared with a certain someone yesterday,” Rae said in a coy voice.
“Holy fuck! Spill right now! What was it like? Did he use tongue? Did he grab your butt? Oh my God did you have sex with him last night?” Tibby yelled. “Shhh. Oh my God Tibby! No! We didn't have sex! It was just a peck on the cheek!”
“Sorry I just like juicy details. I mean nothing interesting ever happens here. Excepted for that time someone put all the goats in Daniels house.”
“Oh yeah! I forgot ab….” Rae wasn’t looking when she slammed into the back of a familiar form. She gasped a sorry as she stumbled back embarrassed to see that it was Joshua.
“Careful there.” He said catching her by the arms. “I’m sorry it’s been a rough morning. I didn’t get much sleep last night.” She said.
“Me either.” He said smiling at Rae. She could feel herself blushing as she tried to avert from his eyes, which were stuck on hers like glue.
“Hey I promised Cara I’d help her and a few others make decorations for the festival. I thought since we were doing so well we could take a break today. I still want to practice tomorrow, but Cara said they really needed a lot of help.”
Rae tried to force a smile and hide her disappointment at the sound of Cara’s name. If there was any person far from being Amity it was Cara. She was obnoxious and egotistical. Her fiery red hair could symbolize her attitude. Cara was very manipulated and forceful always taking what she wanted. She always took the opportunity to point out someone’s flaws especially Rae’s. Cara tormented Rae when she re-entered the social scene letting her know who the alpha dog was. Rae usually tried to steer clear of Cara’s path avoiding her attention. But it would seem Joshua had her attention, probably because Rae was interested in him. This was just Cara showing her dominance over Rae. Rae could only hope come choosing day Cara would pick a different faction.
“Oh yeah its fine. We can just practice tomorrow.” Rae forced out her mouth with a genuinely fake smile.
“Thanks. I really can’t wait for the festival. You’re still saving me a dance right? I’m sure after your song there will be a line full of dancing partners.”
“Oh I don’t think I’ll have a long line of dancing partners.” Rae gushed. “I wouldn’t doubt it, Rae.” He smiled. Rae hardly even noticed she was still holding his hands. She bit her bottom lip looking down feeling Joshua gaze down at her. She looked up to open her mouth but was stopped by the sound of nagging in her ear from Daniel.
“Excuse me! We have five factions to feed, not to mention a festival! Let's move it, people. We have a quota to meet!”
“I’ll see you later?” Joshua asked before taking her hand to kiss. Rae could only mutter out an “okay” while watching him leave.
“Leave it to Daniel to kill a moment. Am I right? Come on Mrs. Joshua. Ole Dan-Dan’s right. Got to feed the five factions.” Tibby said while grabbing Rae who was still in a dreamy state.
For most of the apple picking Rae was still imagining Joshua and drooling over his words to her. She couldn’t tell if it was the peace serum or the fact that she was love-struck. She could imagine a life with Joshua at Amity. A house, two dogs maybe a cat, and three kids, two boys, and a girl. They would raise them together and be one big happy Amity family. She thought of their future while trying to pick at a branch that clearly had no more apples left on it. Tibby of course, sat herself against the tree staring up at Rae in amusement.
“God your twitter pated Rae.”
“No, I’m not I’m just happy. I am Amity remember.”
“Yeah, whatever you do please don’t choose Candor. Okay?” She laughed throwing her hands behind her head. “Oh god no I think I’d be a better Erudite honestly.” Rae gasped.
“Nope couldn’t be Erudite. If they’re all like Daniel count me out. I’d rather be Abnegation.” Tibby stated. “You wouldn’t last a day in Abnegation. I mean look at you.” Rae yelled pointing towards Tibby’s barely full bucket. “I’m a firm believer in breaks! They mentally prepare you” Tibby said in a matter of fact tone. “Oh really?” Rae questioned.
“Yes and hey maybe I’m on guard duty.”
“Guard duty? What are you Dauntless?”
“Maybe I am. You never know. Amity could have danger lurking around every corner.” Tibby said sticking her nose in the air. “Well if you’re Dauntless then you’re probably the danger lurking around every corner.” Rae sneered. “Oh come on. What’s wrong with Dauntless?” Tibby asked.
“They think they can just walk all over Amity just because they’re the Warrior faction and we’re the peaceful faction. And nine times out of ten its Dauntless that causes trouble for all the factions especially Amity.” Rae shot back.
“I don’t know I think they’re kind of hot. Just imagine you’re walking home and all the sudden you’re surrounded by the factionless. You try to run but they corner you and just when you think all hope is lost. Bam! A big, muscular, tattooed Dauntless warrior swings into action, kicking ass! To which afterwards, the sexy dauntless man scoops you up to take you to a clearing in the fields. You're scared, but at the same time turned on. Wondering what he’ll do next. And then he rips both of your clothes off and goes full blown Dauntless on you if you know what I mean.” Tibby said breathlessly.
Rae took a second to eye Tibby. She could tell Tibby was fanaticizing about her Dauntless sex hero. “Wow you’ve really thought long and hard about this haven’t you?”
“Only when I’m alone in my bed.” She nonchalantly says with a wink. Rae could feel her cheeks turn a faint pink color from Tibby’s comment.
“Well, I don’t see what’s so attractive about Dauntless men. I mean they’re barbaric beast with no sense of humanity. And all the tattoos and weird haircuts, oh and the piercings eww! No thank you. That’s just not attractive to me. And why the hell do they only wear black? It's like they’re going to a funeral everyday, which knowing them they probably are. They’re all muscle no brains. Just a bunch of meat heads.” Rae huffed.
“Remind to never tell you if I got Dauntless on my aptitude test,” Tibby said stunned. “Sorry. I know I shouldn’t be so judgmental it’s not very Amity.” Rae apologized. “Hey don’t let me stop you. Plus, it’s nice to see you get fired up about something. But I wouldn’t worry much about Dauntless, Amity is the last place they’d want be.” Tibby laughed. Rae attempted to laugh it off and clear her thoughts, but she could feel that little fire build inside her. She would definitely be having a cup of peace tea when she got home.
It was almost noon when Rae looked off into the distance and noticed something strange. It almost looked like a mini sand storm heading towards Amity’s gate. Looking closer she could see that it was a cluster of black armored trucks. As the truck neared closer she could hear the rumbling engines become louder and louder. It was obviously Dauntless approaching the gate. They liked to make an intimidating entrance when they came to Amity. This was strange though, Amity usually knew when Dauntless or any faction for that matter were coming. It gave Amity time to prepare and get organized. Chatter began to go through the orchard about the surprise visit. “What the hell is going on? Why Dauntless at our Gates?” Tibby asked. Rae shrugged her shoulders wondering the same thing. “I don’t know, but I have a bad feeling.”
As they both pondered the situation, their attention was soon directed towards Nilly skipping through the orchard telling people to head to the Amity Tree. Nilly was a few years younger than Rae and was usually carrying around water for anyone in need of hydration. Rae reached out to stop Nilly, “Do you know what it's about? Why is Dauntless here?” Nilly just shrugged and looked just as confused as everyone else. Rae let go and watched as Nilly skip off alerting others of the emergency meeting. Soon a herd of Amity made their way to the towards the Amity tree. Rae wondered if Poppy was there, she wouldn’t be surprised if he was. Poppy never was ashamed of his age and made a point to be there and be seen by other visiting factions.
In the back of Rae’s mind, she thought about Johanna and Poppy’s conversation last night. Was this what they were talking about? Why didn’t they tell anyone about the Dauntless visit? Soon all of Amity gathered in front of the Tree. Rae and Tibby were at the front of the gathering. Johanna was a few feet in front of the crowd waiting with a patient smile.
The Dauntless trucks roared into faction causing a stir of dirt and dust into the air as they came to a complete halt. Over a dozen of Dauntless soldiers poured out of each truck. All dressed in their signature black attire along with their ammunition accessories. Tibby and Rae tried to examine each face as they filtered around them. It looked like Amity was being swallowed up by a dark, menacing shadow. Each Dauntless soldier was mesmerizing to the Amity girls. They were far more muscular than most of the Amity men. With all the variations of hairstyles, piercings, and tattoos. Tibby gawked at every soldier nudging at Rae. Rae felt an uneasy feeling come over her as the hair on the back of her neck stood straight up. It was like there was a warning in the air for her not to look in the direction of the head truck but her curiosity got the better of her. And boy does she wish she wouldn’t have looked.
She watched as the door flung open with a wondrous Dauntless specimen descend with grace and agility. As he began strolling towards Johanna and the crowd it was apparent that this was no ordinary Dauntless soldiers. He gave off the presence of having power and complete control of the bodies in front of him. His arrogance radiated off of him as he made his way over, analyzing the Amity herd of helpless sheep not overlooking a single one of them. Many looked in every other direction to avoid his overpowering eye contact.
Rae watched every step he took as he inched closer towards her. With every step, she began to lower her head until she was staring at the dirt under her feet. Her breath hitched when two rather large black combat boots came into her view. If that wasn’t enough indication that he was directly in front of her the feeling of his hot breath roaming over her was. She tried shutting her eyes hoping he would move along, but when she peeked the same jet-black boots were still in front of her. Rae began to get annoyed, ‘what’s with this guy,’ she thought, ‘why can’t he just go move on away from me.’ Rae couldn’t help it if he wanted to intimidate her fine, but she would look her challenger in the eye. She took what little bravery and confidence she had left and lifted her head but was only met with a broad black chest. There went her confidence she thought. Not wanting to crane her neck to look anymore pathetic, she lifted her eyes instead. She was met with the deadly steel gray orbs that had the capability in that moment to destroy her.
He was frightening, but spectacular all at once. He was a mountain towering over her, completely made of muscle. As she continued to bravely scan the God in front of her, she found what appeared to be a tattoo peeking out from under his nicely fitted long sleeve black shirt, which covered his thick, muscular neck. She resumed back to her examination, which led her to his perfect chiseled jawline and appetizingly plump lips. His dark blond hair was neatly shaved on the sides leaving the top of his hair longer in a perfectly gelled wave. He was no stranger to piercings, having both ears decorated and one above his perfectly shaped brow.
Mesmerized by the living statue in front of her she had forgotten about the intense stare he was giving her. His steel gray eyes beamed her down, declaring dominance over her. It was too much for Rae, she felt something inside of her tingle and started to feel the heat hit her all at once. He gave her a menacing, victorious grin as she dropped her head looking to the ground for some type of comfort.
“Eric, Amity welcomes you.” Johanna greeted all while forcing a smile. Eric lazily glanced over his shoulder to acknowledge Johanna then drifted back to Rae who was still looking to the ground. And with that, he turned kicking a bit of dirt behind him sprinkling Rae while making his way to Johanna. Rae could finally catch her breath she had lost during her encounter with Eric.
“Johanna.” He nods giving her a sarcastic grin. “This is a surprise we weren’t expecting our Dauntless checkup for another two weeks.” She laughed trying to ease the tension. A few of Amity and even some Dauntless joined in on the laughter, but that only added to the intensity in the air.
Eric stood there unamused with his hands behind his back giving his posture an even more dominating look. He stared at Johanna with a composed, articulate look before speaking. “I think it's important to have these ‘Surprise Checkups’ it keeps everyone in line. Making sure no ones getting more than what they need and because as you probably already know there are some people who aren’t qualified to run things properly. So it’s our job to make sure the opposite of that happens, to weed out the weak that disrupt the system. But I’m sure Amity doesn’t have that problem. Right.”
Eric took a jab at Johanna hoping she would show some sort of grimace towards his words, but she was Amity and only smiled at his cruel words.
“Right you are and that is why we are grateful for Dauntless and their ‘checkups.’ Should we discuss some of these checkups in my office?” She pronounced.
“That’d be great.” He answered sharply.
“Alright everyone make sure our Dauntless friends feel welcomed. Now please get back to your duties and peace be with you.” She announced. The crowd then replied in unison “Peace be with you.” Eric only rolled his eyes at the hippy greeting.
He also addressed his company of Dauntless soldiers “Dauntless stay put until I say otherwise. Anyone who decides to disobey my orders will face the consequences you’ve been warned.”
His command was directed towards only dauntless but many felt like his command was to be taken in by everyone as a warning. And with that Amity dispersed leaving the Dauntless patrol, giving Tibby and Rae (mainly Tibby) the perfect opportunity to give them a good ole “Amity Welcome.”
“It seems the harvest came early this year, huh? God just look at them, Rae! All those muscles!”
“Calm down its not like you can take a basket and pick your favorites.” Rae nudged her to move towards the orchard, but Tibby was slick rolling her body back towards the Dauntless group. Before Rae protest Tibby’s decision, her curious friend picked up a basket of freshly picked apples. Looking satisfied with the basket of apples she through Rae a one last chance glance urging her to go with her. Rae didn’t want Tibby to be alone with them; worried they would take advantage of her curious Amity friend. Rae huffed and made her way to Tibby to continue with her towards the Dauntless brutes. Tibby spotted a good manly patch and walked right up to them smiling while batting her eyelashes.
“Hi ya. Welcome to Amity.” Tibby greeted while offering the four colossal men in front of her a freshly picked apple.
“Move the fuck along Amity.” One of the soldiers snapped but was quickly met with a loud smack to the back of the head by the rather larger Dauntless man beside him.
“Damn it Jake! Don’t be so fucking rude. Sorry ladies he not yet professional when it comes to faction relations. However, I am.” the large Dauntless man said. “Names Zeke. That fucker’s name is Jake. Blane and that Lady killer’s name is Luke.”
The best way to describe Zeke would be a grizzly bear. He was an immensely large man but seemed gentle with his curly dark hair. His lip ring almost went unnoticed due to the scruffiness of his thick beard.
Jake looked much younger than the group of men he was around. Rae came to the conclusion that he must have just gone through initiation that year. Unlike the others, Jake had clean skin no trace of any tattoos or piercing. His hair was slicked back, almost as if he was trying to copy the look of his leader.
Blane was terrifying to look at. He probably had more tattoos and piercings than all of Dauntless combined. He was a walking canvas. His scalp contained two symmetrical gun tattoos that appeared to be firing bullets that ended up on both of his temples. The bullets point to the word “Fatal” that was stretched across his forehead. Rae could tell he had many more; she examined every tattoo, piercing, and scar that was visible to her. After scanning Blane her eyes fell upon Luke whose eyes were staring at her with devious intentions.
Luke’s eyes were ivy green and full of mischievous. His head was shaved giving all the focus to the nasty scar that ran over the top of his eyebrow to his cheek. Just as Rae examined Blane’s art, Luke had examined Rae. She could feel his eyes piercing her body as she tried to look anywhere to avoid his gaze.
She finally met his eyes and as he smirked at her she moved closer towards Tibby invading her space. Tibby hardly noticed as her focus was on Zeke. “I’m Tibby and this is Rae. We’re so happy Dauntless is here. It's nice knowing Dauntless sends their best. I feel safer already.” She smirked. “You guys must be hungry. Apple?”
Zeke, Jake, and Blane through their hands quickly in the basket grabbing at the apples. Rae turned her head to Luke who was standing there still staring with a content grin on his face. “Would you like an apple?” Rae asked in a quiet undertone. “No thanks sugar. I want a more juicier fruit,” he said licking his lips. Rae could feel her cheeks turning pink with embarrassment.
“Haha! You smug bastard! Honestly ladies, you’re probably in more danger with us here.” Zeke laughed.
“ I like danger,” Tibby directed towards Zeke, inching closer to him. Zeke knew the game Tibby was playing to which he was happy to oblige her. “Oh you do don’t you. I’d be careful sweetheart, I’m a very dangerous man.” He leaned into Tibby begin inches from her face. Tibby’s breaths shorten as she bit her bottom lip. All the while Rae hesitated as she noticed Luke himself moving closer and closer to her.
“Tibby I think we need to be getting back to the orchard.” She said tugging on Tibby’s arm. “Rae its fine.” Tibby snapped.
“We should be getting back before…”
The sound of Johanna’s office door swinging open caught everyone’s attention. Dauntless knew this was a warning and scrambled to get in line. Rae and Tibby watched the frenzy in confusion. Tibby began stepping backwards grabbing Rae in the process. When they felt safe, the girls decided to watch what was about to unfold.
The fearless leader made long strides towards his troops with Johanna calmly following. As he made his way getting closer, Tibby and Rae continued to walk backwards in unison gazing at the fearless leader.
Eric stood in front of his Dauntless soldiers inspecting them intently. Everything seemed to be in tiptop shape before an apple core rolled in front of the rookie Dauntless Jake. Eric eyed the apple and smirked. He wondered over to the apple core and bent down to pick it up. Jake tried to stay calm and kept his eyes straight forward but was still sweating profusely. Eric towered over Jake with a playful smirk on his face, but his eyes reveal something different.
“Did you enjoy your apple?” Eric asked in a sarcastic tone.
“N…no sir” Jake answered unsure of what he should say. He tried to not make direct eye contact with Eric, which was challenging considering the fact that Eric was glaring at him.
“You didn’t? It sure looks like you did. Why didn’t you grab me one?”
Jake wasn’t sure he heard him correctly and stared at Erin in confusion. “I’m sorry, sir?”
“I said,” he violently grabbed Jakes jaw in a swift motion shoving the apple core mercilessly down his throat, “Why didn’t you grab me one? Don’t you fucking dare spit it out.” He commanded while holding Jake’s neck.
Eric’s eyes narrowed at Jake with a slight smirk on his face, as Jake was turning blue with Eric’s hands still wrapped around his neck. Rae felt the color drain from her face as she became nauseous. She had never seen such cruelty inflicted on a person before.
After Eric was satisfied with the shade of blue on Jake’s face he effortlessly shoved Jake to the ground, where he began to regurgitate chunks of apple. Eric walked around Jake, paying no mind to his heaving sounds, he was making to breathe. He stood in front of his Dauntless soldiers, emotionless, to address them.
“Let me be clear, this is not a vacation. You are not here to relax. You are Dauntless. You follow my orders and I’ll say it again if anyone chooses to disobey my orders will face the fucking consequences.”
He looked over his Dauntless troops and caught eyes with an Amity girl holding a basket full of apples, the same Amity girl that had tried to challenge him earlier that day. Eric then smirked at the horrified Amity girl and uttered “Ah the forbidden fruit… but not for long,” to himself. Rae could feel her heart beating in her chest. Her first instinct was to run, but something deep inside her told her not too. She slowly lowered herself to place the basket on the ground all while not breaking eye contact with the Dauntless leader. Eric furthered his stare at Rae letting her know that he was the one with the power and not her, but he was still intrigued. Rae stood up and gave him one last challenging look before turning to go back to the orchard.
Eric watched the young Amity walk away, back to the orchard. He watched her round hips sway from side to side as she walked wondering what it would be like the grab them and have them bend to his every whim. He smiled to himself and uttered, “Challenge accepted.”

Summer In Your Eyes (Lifeguard!Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes Modern Summer AU)
Epilogue:
Setting down the last box, Bucky placed his hands on his hips and looked around the dorm room. There wasn't much, a few boxes and a duffle bag on his side. So far, it was the only items in the room bar the beds and desks that came with the dorm itself.  But Bucky was sure that Sam had more than enough stuff for both of them.  After all, why else would he be running late.  It couldn't possibly be because he was spending some much needed time with Nat.
"Well," George started. Bucky turned to look back at his dad and noticed the glassy look to his eyes. George was chewing on the inside of his cheek to keep his tears from spilling over as he said, "This is it."
"Dad," Bucky smirked, walking back to George. Bucky brought his dad into a comforting embrace and reminded him, "I'll be home for Thanksgiving. And Christmas. And whenever I need my laundry done."
At that, George playfully poked Bucky's side, causing Bucky to chuckle. George tightened his grasp and Bucky nestled his face into his dad's neck. Even though Bucky had just reminded George that he'd still be around, Bucky couldn't help but miss him already. This was a new experience for both of them, and it hit Bucky all at once that things weren't going to be the same.
It probably should've hit Bucky sooner.
And despite his best efforts, a sniffle ripped through him. To console his son, George rubbed Bucky's back while softly reminding him, "I'll see you when you need your laundry done."
Bucky chuckled and nodded, his chin digging into George's shoulder. Bucky could remember when he was shorter. When he could nestle his head against George's chest while he was lulled to sleep by the steady beating of his dad's heart. Remembering the way that George would softly hum a nonsensical tune while raking his fingers through Bucky's brown locks.
Longing for those days now, Bucky closed his eyes and tried to remember the soft tune. Before he could get it right though, he heard Mandy and Becca arguing. Instantly Bucky sighed and let go of George. Watching as his sisters joined them in his dorm.
"That just doesn't make any --"
"It makes perfect sense!" Mandy interrupted Becca.
"No," Becca insisted, "It doesn't!"
"What's going on?" Bucky asked, his brows furrowing.
"Who gets your room," Becca answered, briefly looking over at Bucky.
Bucky's jaw dropped in feign offense as he stated, "No one gets my room."
Becca and Mandy paused then. Both studying their older brother before exchanging a look with each other and bursting out into loud laughter. Bucky rolled his eyes at that. Although he normally would've ignored them entirely, he knew that he'd miss them too.
So, instead, Bucky crossed the room and wrapped them both in his arms. At that their laughter died down and the three formed a misshapen group hug which grew once Winifred walked into the room. Immediately, she wrapped her arms around her three oldest children. Always treasuring these moments considering how rare they were since they had each hit puberty.
Winifred, took a step back, and wiped at her makeup free face of any escaped tears. Sniffling, Winifred tightened the scrunchie holding her hair back and looked over her oldest. Her bub.
With tears rimming his eyes, Bucky approached his mom and wrapped her in for a tight hug. Resting his chin on the top of her head, Bucky remembered how Winifred used to do this to him. How he'd crawl into her lap and she'd wrap him up in her arms and give him a big bear hug. Always placing her chin on the top of his head. Their way of loving each other. All the while, Winifred would read to him fantastical novels that might've been too mature for him, but expanded his imagination and love for reading.
"Hey, what about me?!" Tibby exclaimed.
Bucky turned his attention to the doorway where Steve was setting Tibby down. Pulling away from Winifred, Bucky held his arms open for the six year old to jump into his embrace. Which she did. Even with Blue grasped tightly in her arm.
Tibby held Bucky close while she buried her face in his neck. She had been crying all day, and Bucky had been doing his best to comfort her, but hadn't been doing much. Steve had helped more, but Bucky knew that she'd be back at the start once she found out that he wasn't staying with her tonight, and was going home instead.
"Hey," Bucky soothed, rubbing her back with his hand. "Why are you crying?"
"I'm gonna miss you," Tibby hiccupped into his neck, grasping him even tighter.
"It's going to be okay," Bucky reassured. Practically the same as he reminded everyone else in the family, Bucky told Tibby, "I'll be home so much that you'll get sick of me. Trust me."
"Yeah?" Tibby asked, pulling back to look at Bucky's face.
Smiling, Bucky nodded and confirmed, "Yeah."
Tibby sniffled and agreed, "Okay."
"Okay," Bucky repeated, leaning forward to press his forehead to Tibby's. Then, to get Tibby to giggle in hopes of cheering her up, Bucky started tickling her. And just as he hoped, Tibby couldn't help the giggles that escaped her.
Once Bucky had finally gotten enough giggles, he gave Tibby another hug. Holding tight as she relaxed in his arms. Bucky could admit to himself that he'd miss Tibby the most. And while he was admitting things, he knew that he wasn't ready for them to leave just yet.
Especially when Winifred clapped her hands to gain everyone's attention as she declared, "We better get going."
Tibby leaned back to frown at Bucky and Bucky could tell that she was going to cry again. Bucky held her just a little bit tighter as he tried to refrain from crying, himself. Of course, the sniffle gave him away.
Passing Tibby to George, Bucky placed a comforting grin on his face, trying to keep the tears at bay. Even though the pair was already crying.
George reached out and grasped Bucky's shoulder in a soothing gesture and smiled at Bucky. Reminding Tibby, Bucky, and himself, "See you when your laundry needs to be done."
"Oh, so this weekend," Mandy teased while Becca sniffled.
"Oh, c'mon," Steve playfully nudged Mandy, earning a fond grin from Bucky, before he teased, "You'll most definitely see him by Wednesday."
Feigning annoyance, Bucky rolled his eyes and scoffed, "You are literally the worst boyfriend ever."
"Debatable," Becca teased, siding with Steve, as always.
Bucky shook his head and mocked, "Is it time for you to leave yet?"
"James," Winifred warned, even though a small smile was tugging at her lips.
Knowing that it was time to go, Bucky hugged each member of his family once more. Once he made his way back to Tibby, he kneeled in front of her and she held out her favorite teddy bear, Blue. Pausing, Bucky furrowed his brows and smirked as he went to give the cherished bear a hug.
As he went to hand the bear back though, Tibby held her hand up, stopping him. Bucky's brows furrowed even more before Tibby explained, "I want you to keep him."
"Tib --"
"Blue is good at keeping the monsters away," Tibby interrupted Bucky's protest.
Smiling, Bucky glanced down at the bear and pulled Tibby in for another hug. Tibby held him close and Bucky whispered, "Thank you. I'll make sure to bring him back so you two can visit."
"Good," Tibby sniffled. Pulling back, Tibby smiled as she reminded, "He likes having the night light on."
"Okay," Bucky nodded, playing along.
"C'mon, Tib," Winifred stated, touching Tibby's shoulder.
"Be good," Bucky reminded, kissing Tibby's forehead. Standing up, he held Blue close and watched as his family left his dorm.
Leaving Bucky and Steve by themselves, Bucky hugged the bear just a bit closer. Tears were rimming Bucky's eyes as he watched Steve shove his hands into his pockets. Bucky couldn't help but mourn the time that they had wasted, and wasn't prepared to say goodbye just yet.
"So," Steve started, crossing the room. Worrying his lower lip with his teeth, Steve glanced down and Bucky knew that he was only doing so because he didn't want Bucky to see the tears that were building in his eyes.
Setting Blue on his plain bed, Bucky took a step forward. Meeting Steve halfway, Bucky stood close. As if it was second nature, Bucky slid his hands up Steve's chest, and didn't stop until he securely had them around to the back of Steve's neck.
Tenderly tangling his fingers in Steve's blond locks, Steve snaked his arms around Bucky's waist and rested his forehead against Bucky's. Softly, Bucky caressed the back of Steve's head and Steve reminded, "I'll see you the weekend after next."
"The weekend after next," Bucky repeated, agreeing. Steve somberly sighed and tightened his grasp on Bucky's torso, bringing him closer. Bucky reassured, "It'll fly by. You'll see."
"Right," Steve agreed, even though his voice was far too shaky for Bucky's liking. Weakly, Steve teased, "We made it through four years, we can make it through two weeks."
"Absolutely," Bucky reassured, leaning in to sweetly kiss Steve. Steve eagerly returned the kiss and Bucky teased around his lips, "I'm surprised you're not sick of me yet."
"You know what? Actually..." Steve teased, starting to pull away.
But Bucky held him that much closer as he claimed, "You know you love me."
Steve wistfully sighed, "Yeah."
"This is where you say you love me," Bucky whispered, as though he was feeding Steve a line.
"You love me," Steve repeated with a shit-eating grin on his perfectly handsome face. Earning a look from Bucky, just like he expected, Steve ran his hands down. Lovingly holding Bucky's taut bum, Steve leaned forward and said, "You know that I love you."
"Yeah, I do," Bucky confirmed, kissing Steve again.
Around Bucky's lips, Steve repeated his earlier sentiment and said, "You're supposed to say that you love me too."
Playfully, Bucky nipped at Steve's lower lip before fondly gazing at Steve and saying, "I love you, too."

Summer In Your Eyes (Lifeguard!Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes Modern Summer AU)
Three:
Bucky's eyes hadn't been closed for longer than an hour before he felt someone poking an indent into his cheek. Bucky groaned for the person to leave him alone. In hopes to deter the person, Bucky turned his head so he was resting on his sore cheek. Of course, that didn't stop them. Instead, they just moved onto abusing his other cheek.
"This is why you always get a full face of shaving cream at sleep overs," a raspy voice stated in mock disappointment.
It didn't take long for Bucky's eyelids to fly open and for him to roll onto his back to get a better look of the girl sitting on the bed next to him: Natasha Romanoff. Of course, due to Bucky's abrupt action and the small bed, she nearly toppled off the side. With a giggle and a snort, she regained her balance and teased, "You excited to see me? Or am I better in your dreams?" Even wiggling her eyebrows playfully, causing Bucky to laugh.
Sitting up, Bucky accepted Natasha's invitation of a hug and wrapped his arms firmly around her torso. Although Natasha's frame was naturally tiny, she gave Bucky's body a squeeze that felt strong enough to break his ribs. If she wanted to. Luckily, Natasha didn't. Instead, she pulled back and held Bucky's shoulders as she studied him at arms-length.
Bucky wondered what Natasha saw. His hair was longer. Not too long though. Just longer than the last time she saw him last. Which was two spring break vacations ago. Bucky was taller. More gangly. More awkward. But for the most part, Bucky thought he looked exactly the same.
As Bucky's brows furrowed under Natasha's scrutiny, Natasha flashed an endearing grin and exhaled a sigh of relief, "There's James."
Playfully, Bucky rolled his eyes at Natasha using his real name and he pushed her hands off his shoulders. Natasha feigned hurt -- even pouting her lower lip for added affect -- as she asked, "Didn't you miss me in the slightest?"
"Nah," Bucky teased as he looked her over.
Natasha had changed more than Bucky had in the wake of each other's absences. Her hair was shorter, in a blunt cut that reached towards her shoulders, and had been dyed red. Not just any red. Firetruck red. Like The Little Mermaid. It suited her well.
Scratching his chin in a pensive manner, Bucky mocked, "Something's different about you, hmm? What is it?"
Natasha matched Bucky's mockery and her face scrunched the way that it typically did when she was thinking. Whether real or imaginary. "Maybe," she drawled, "It's because I've grown three inches."
Bucky pretended to think before finally shaking his head, "No, it isn't that…"
"Maybe," Natasha perked, sitting up a little straighter and glanced down at her body, "It's that I've... filled out."
With a smirk and a quirked brow, Bucky briefly broke character to glance at Natasha's chest. Indeed, her body had naturally developed predictably. Pretending to be impressed, Bucky nodded congratulatory at Natasha's natural achievement the same way that she had done when Bucky's voice started to crack all those years ago.
Natasha stood from Bucky's bed then and bowed while Bucky applauded. Even standing to give her a theatrical standing ovation. To keep up the charade, Natasha started exaggeratedly posing like a pinup model.
Giggling because of their antics, Bucky pulled Natasha in for another hug. Ruffling the red strands, Bucky told her, "It looks good. It suits you."
"Ya think?" Natasha asked, cocking her head to the side and narrowing her eyes, studying Bucky to see if he was lying to her in any way possible. Bucky nodded his confirmation and she questioned, "Why?"
With a dramatic, wistful sigh, Bucky held his hand up to his heart and set his gaze into the ceiling in far off wonderment, "Because you are the heart and soul of my existence."
Natasha cackled at that and tugged Bucky towards the door while suggesting, "C'mon, let's go to the pit."
Although Bucky would rather do anything other than hang out at the lake channel twenty minutes away, he still followed Natasha downstairs. Bucky's family was still getting situated in the house, but Natasha hopping off the second to last step caused Tibby to momentarily stop dressing Loki up as a princess.
Tibby turned, fairy godmother wand in hand, to watch the two older teens. Looking entirely surprised by Natasha not following the Barnes' rules of no jumping and no running in the house. Tibby lowered her voice, "Mommy wouldn't like that."
"It's okay," Natasha winked at Tibby and lied, "I'm a spy, so I can do whatever I want."
Good-humoredly scoffing, Bucky grabbed Natasha's arm and pulled her out of the house. Once outside, Bucky joked, "If Tibby starts climbing bookcases and back flipping off them, I’m not even going to hesitate to put all the blame on you."
"Please," Natasha playfully rolled her eyes and scoffed, "I'll be the one showing her the proper form and give her a score of straight tens."
"You're ridiculous," Bucky chuckled, dropping Natasha's arm.
Opening the driver side of her magenta 1998 Nissan Sentra, Natasha claimed, "I think you're just jealous."
"Is that so?" Bucky asked, climbing into the passenger seat.
Wiggling her eyebrows and flashing a devilish grin, Natasha confirmed, "Yup."
"Well, let's not open that can of worms," Bucky teased as Natasha started the pre-owned car and gracefully pulled out of the driveway.
"Fine," Natasha feigned exasperation and Bucky couldn't help but look at her with the utmost of adoration. Even when she purposely played the one genre of music that Bucky couldn't stand, just to mess with him while turning and taking the long way.

Goodbye Tibby... Hello Tiberius
A tirade of memories flows into my head. None of them belong to me, yet they all involve me, one way or another. They’re everything this woman, my sister, Nala, knows me to be. I watch snippets of my life play before me, mostly from a child’s perspective, and yet they strike a chord with something deep inside. I begin to remember parts of who I was; strong, loyal, a keeper of traditions. All the traits of an esteemed wraith commander. I also regain some of the facts about my life: who my mother and brothers were, which wraith faction we belonged to, which planets of the Pegasus galaxy belonged to our territory. And I remember Michael- the little brother who I always thought had the most potential, the one I adored but was also a little envious of.
Nala then shows me our story. How the humans in Atlantis came up with an experiment that not only ripped apart our family, but also destroyed almost the entire wraith and human species combined. Though the Lanteans weren’t strictly to blame for the latter consequence, that was due to him. I see through Nala’s eyes and feel in my own core the desperation I had to save my species and to stop my rogue, insane brother. But he backed us into a corner, and desperately weakened with only a poisoned food supply, I’d been forced to land the hive and hibernate in the hope that time would deliver the victory that battle had not. How mistaken I was; as it turns out, time had made him more powerful than I ever could have imagined. Nala shows me what she knows of his reign, including his numerous powerful allies and territory that has advanced far beyond the territory of all the wraith combined. Nevertheless, fate had still found a way to bring us together again, almost a hundred years after our last encounter. Despite his mastery, I’d had him at my mercy. Even without all of my own memories, I can feel the pain that comes from having wasted such a rare and precious opportunity, all in the hopes that my sister would be the one to take his life. However, she had forsaken us to go back to him, and now here I am at her mercy, in my own ship’s cells, no less.
“How do you feel?” She asks me.
“Incomplete.” I reply bluntly. I only have the memories she has of me, and that leaves hundred of years of my life unaccounted for. Still, I have a feeling it could have been worse… “Why am I here?” I ask her in return. I’m surprised I’m not already dead, but then perhaps Michael is planning to have me publicly executed. Or worse, turned into some sort of biological freak for his amusement.
Nala must sense my thoughts, since she responds, “Your fate is in my hands, not his. I don’t hold any ill will against you, Tiberius. In fact, I want to help you, if I can.”
I sneer. “What can you do? What can any of us do? You just showed me that I have no hope of winning this war, or saving the wraith. No, the only thing I can ask for now is to die without becoming one of his abominations.”
Nala suddenly looks nervous, and I notice her glance down at my right hand…no…I lift up my palm, only to find my feeding organ gone. The effect is like picturing a face with no features, just a covering of skin, it’s grotesque! “What have you done to me..?!”
“I did what I needed to do to keep you alive. The humans are practically all gone, and besides, there’s no way Michael would have let you live without undergoing the process.”
“I thought my fate was in your hands, not his.” I hiss at her, “Is this what your life is now, little sister? Being subservient to a male in order to survive? You’re a disgrace to wraith-kind!” I try to insult her, to hurt her like she hurt me, but she doesn’t even flinch.
“I haven’t been a wraith in a long time, not really… This is hardly the life I was promised when I was a child, but I try to make the best of it. Michael’s the only person who’s always cared about me, and even you think that he’s a genius, so no, I’m not ashamed to support him. I try my best for the people I feel deserve it, and despite everything that’s happened, Tiberius, I still consider you one of those people. Now you’re in the same position that I was all those years ago: you’re no longer a wraith, and there’s no way back to that. If you really can’t live with that idea, then I won’t force you to. But I ask that you think on this: how many of our brothers, of our kind, had their lives taken from them with no choice? You have a chance to carry on living.”
Lives taken… No choice… I feel like there’s something I should remember, something really important to me, but it’s not here… Perhaps it’s something Nala doesn’t know? I felt that she didn’t show me everything from her mind, but I don’t think she held back something she thought was this essential.
“To do what? Serve our brother?” I spit resentfully, but she nods in earnest.
“Yes, living does require absolute loyalty to him. But that wouldn’t have to be your entire life. I know how devoted you were to saving the wraith, but you could come up with new dreams. Perhaps one of them could be taking care of our other brothers. If you choose to accept this life, I’m sure they will find it easier to follow your example.”
She pauses and looks troubled, but not because of our conversation. I sense her getting a telepathic message from Michael, though the contents are hidden from me.
“I need to go.” She informs me. “Take some time to think about what I said. I’ll try to return in a few hours to hear what your answer is.” Her tone changes, becoming instructional as she gives me direct orders. “Whilst I am gone you will not try to escape, and you will not do anything that could harm either Michael, yourself, the drones or me.”
She puts pressure on my mind until I relent. “Yes, my queen.” The words slip out as my mind gives in, and I try not to let her sense my embarrassment.
She leaves the two drones guarding my cell with me, and turns to walk away with her own drone. “Nala!” I call out to her before she’s out of sight. She turns her head to look back at me, and I get my last words in. “I know there’s something you’re keeping from me.”
I glare, trying to be intimidating, but I’m shocked when an amused grin forms on her face. “All I’ll say is this is attempt number two, not one. Oh, and I know you can cartwheel.”
I try not to look too humiliated that she knows that piece of private information as she leaves my sight. But I have more important things to think about now. I sit on the cell bench, and wonder how I even begin to contemplate what I should do next.
