I'm gonna be honest: I'm glad Harold Ramis decided that Egon and Janine didn't become a couple. Although I love Janine, I don't like the way he sees Egon in the novelization. As far as I understand, the novelization is like the original ideas, more details and deleted scenes and dialogues and there were some paragraphs that made me go like these: 😐🤨???
She literally considered he was cute in an intellectual sort of way and brainy guys like him were absent-minded and needed guidance (and she liked to guide):
The Janegon moments in the novelization that didn't appear in the movie showed that Egon hardly understood Janine's needs and the way he interacts with her seems way too forced, including the "nice shoulder blades" thing (according to a part, hugging was something unfamiliar for him). I am not a fan of the way they portrayed him as someone who hardly interacted with women in his life and Peter Venkman had to give him tips.
Come on, Egon's 40 years old; in a part of the novelization they said Egon spent his teenage and young adulthood studying people's behavior 💀??? That must have included how to interact with any gender...
Also, maybe this is my interpretation but I don't see Janine and Egon having many things in common. Like, they obviously care about each other deeply but is that enough to make a relationship work? At least for me, I NEED to have interests in common with my boyfriend because neurodivergent people connect way better with others through our special interests.
I personally prefer them as close friends, there is no need to force a relationship when just one of them have romantic feelings. Their first interaction made more than clear that Egon noticed that Janine was trying to to go further so he just gave short answers like "Print is dead" and "I collect spores, mold and fungus" to let her know that he's not interested on her in that way.
Harold Ramis particularly requested that Egon didn't date Janine in 'Ghostbusters II', so I am praying that they continued to accept his wishes in 'Afterlife'.
One of my favourite things about Egon's character is that, despite being portrayed as an autistic person, he picks up on Janine's attraction to him and gently tries to hint that he isn't interested in her like that. I know Egon and Janine are together in Real Ghostbusters, but in film canon I hope Egon and Janine stay as good friends.
I hope that Janine ended up marrying Louis Tully. Please.

What makes you ship Egon and Janine? (Hope you're not annoyed by this)
Not annoyed, anon! :D ship questions that aren’t anti are always welcome.
Welp, it’s kinda funny for me to get into this considering when I first started rewatching RGB I was like ‘OK, it’s kinda cute but definitely not shipping material for me’. And then it changed and I fell head-first into shipping hell.
The bargain killer for me and Janegon used to be that Egon didn’t seem very interested. Although Janine was clearly crazy about him, I didn’t think Egon even liked her back and it just didn’t seem fair to put mah gurl in a situation where she was just constantly gonna be trailing behind a guy who wasn’t ever going to reciprocate her feelings (I know from experience that it really SUCKS) and put Egon in a situation where he’d constantly have these feelings he didn’t reciprocate pushed onto him just for laughs. It just really didn’t seem right.
(That said, I wasn’t OK with her being kinda pushed into Louis’s arms for film 2?? It looked a lot like ‘Welp, she’s GOT to end up with SOMEBODY, right? Let’s just put her with Rick Moranis because her new hairdo kinda looks like Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors’. I really don’t see what the problem with having her just be single was, but I doubt it was a way to effectively and completely kill the ship, considering she does dress Louis in Egon’s uniform at one point, which makes it look even more like she’s just trying to replace him and is most deffinitely not over him)
BUT, then episodes progressed and the RGB team started being really heavy with the shipping content and magic started happening as I started to understand characters better, or, at the very least, became able to make a proper interpretation of them.
Egon (At least as far as animated Egon goes) is affectionate to his team, Janine included, in very specific ways that are constantly overlooked by people, probably because they aren’t typical. His ways of being affectionate include doing things out of his comfort zone with them (Such as visiting the family or going on vacation trips to farms) talking with them about their interests even if he knows little to nothing about them or doesn’t particularly share them, share his OWN interests with them and rant about stuff kept in the wikipedia-like knowledge library in his brain simply because he finds them interesting. All of these, he has done with the rest of the team at some point, which I guess stands for the common belief that while he does care about her it’s not necessarily a romantic feeling. What sold me was how, in this one episode where they’re about to blow themselves up to save the world (Again) and while the others are saying goodbye to each other, Egon says one word only: Her name. And he has this expression and this tone, like he’s just realizing something and it already might be too late to do anything about it. It’s one among the multitude of hints at romance between these two that the animated series gave us, but it’s probably one of the most powerful ones…not counting the one where he actually goes and tells her he loves her, which is in the latter part of the series where things were goin’ to heck with continuity and consistency so I gotta wonder if it counts.
So you have this dude and you have Janine. No-nonsense, tough-as-nails, possitively SAVAGE Janine Melnitz who, against all odds, still has a huge heart that gets the best of her at times. Along with Winston, she plays the part of the ‘Normal’ part of the team…and that’s saying, considering she seems to take most of the weird stuff she’s exposed to in stride rather quickly with an ease that has me wondering just what other crazy shit she’s been through. She’s very clear and obviously into Egon, so there’s not much to say for that. One might think it’s a very superficial kind of infatuation, but she’s aware of his faults, comfortable with him as he is, even if it means he’s going to be distant (Without it meaning she quietly accepts to be ignored), and interested in him as a person rather than just physically. Plus, when he really is being a butt (As opposed to just not being in the same page as her or the other guys) she doesn’t hesitate to tear him a new one. It’s delightful.
She and Spengz are so different it’s a bit funny. Egon is an incredibly smart man that still somehow manages to miss out on common sense cues. Janine is all-common sense, except when she allows her sentiment to muddle it. Egon gives off a feeling that he’s gone through life with quiet dignity and grace. Janine seems like the kind of girl who’s gone through life cussing and kicking and is still standing, threatening to slap a bitch. Egon has a mind for numbers that often end up giving less than hopeful results. Janine, despite her somewhat dry outlook on life, is very optimistic. I could go on, but my point is their differences are designed so that they ground each other. It’s not necessarily a ‘Heal each other’ kinda love story, but balance is there and I’m a sucker for balance.
That pretty much sums it up, I think?
#i hope this makes sense for anyone that's not me? I feel like it doesn't really but I am not spending more time on this#janegon#ghostbusters#the real ghostbusters
