For the song and pairing ask, empty chairs at empty tables from les mis, and the mechs polycule :)
As with literally everything, this has been sitting in my ask box for a while. You couldn’t have sent this ask without the expectation of angst.
So we’re going post-Out and post-DTTM
Somehow, Nastya survived Out. She survives and she regrets her decision of leaving.
So she returns to the Aurora to find a lifeless ship floating in the void of space. No AI responses when Nastya reaches out to offer an apology. The Aurora does not respond for the simple reason that Aurora is no longer there.
The ship is silent so she searches and she searches but there’s nothing. There’s no one - not even an octokitten. Just empty chairs at empty tables.
Abandoned rooms, discarded possessions. Everything about the ship Nastya recognised as her home. But her family is gone. Her love is gone.
She finds the Toy Soldier, of course. But it does not respond to anything she says. It does not respond at all. It is nothing more than a doll.
Going into Jonny’s room is the hardest for her. Because this is a man who is her brother in all blood who is now lost. But his room is still a mess. Scraps of fabric and odd tidbits scattered around. A photo of him and Nastya still pinned to the wall.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me // That I live and you are gone // There’s a grief that can’t be spoken // There’s a pain goes on and on.
She also finds copies of their albums. Some she recognises, some she doesn’t. One of them she just holds and stares at it for a few moments; as if she can’t comprehend its existence. Death To The Mechanisms.
She listens as Jonny makes jokes about dying from the start. She listens to the Bifrost Incident. She listens as they reminisce on old stories and old songs.
She listens as she reaches the second to last track. Nastya listens as her brother narrates how her family die; as he describes how they ‘follow Nastya’ before describing each and every one. None of them surprise her. Not entirely.
And Nastya curls up on Jonny’s bed and lets the album play on loop again and again until the CD stops working. Then she just lays there until she too is nothing and can do nothing but hope that one day, she will return to where she belongs.
Oh my friends, my friends // Don’t ask me what your sacrifice was for // Empty chairs at empty tables // Where my friends will sing no more.
