4: Rambling about research!

do you wanna see a screen shot of my bookmarks under my "band au" folder?

man, and that's only what could fit on the screen.

there is... SO MUCH i chose to ignore for this fic. ideas that i had to drop, lines or extra details about the other band members equipment. more logistics, what Lucienne actually does, what Mervyn has to put up with as the new touring stage manager... i realized very early on that i couldn't possibly cram all this (super cool and eye opening) information into the fic and still keep reader's interest and, most importantly, to not stray away from the fact that this is a dreamling fic. whenever i felt myself getting carried away with a side character or job or even social media numbers, gossip, outside POVs, i had to reign myself in and get back on track. there will be time for exploring everything i missed in side stories after BitB is finished. i just hope i still have the energy to write it all.

once, i was so deep into research that after publishing chapter 2, i went into work and when my chef asked what "GA" meant on my prep list, i answered with full confidence, "general admission."

(it means "get ahead.")

the worst part of this entire writing process is im still learning new shit. i havent rewatched or read a lot of what i've saved because, to be very honest, i was feeling a little burnt out. it's why we're kinda full steam dreamling now. it's why ive been glossing over a lot of technical stuff and being vague about conversations amongst the crew/not including it at all. i don't prefer ignoring my research, but at the end of the day i want to still enjoy writing this fic and finish it. even if i can't be as descriptive and detailed and nuanced as i used to be.

5: Did you outline the fic?

i wouldn't call what i have a proper "outline," it's more like a 20k word document filled to the brim with notes that i skim at least a dozen times while i'm writing a new chapter (being in my brain is literally hell). i live multichapter life very dangerously. i copy and paste lines or sections (always scattered, never together! augh!) that are meant to go together and plop them in a new document titled "band au ch.#" and then i structure the chapter around what i want to happen.

but to answer this question in the plainest of terms: yeah. i know exactly what's going to happen up until the very end. even if its all in my head and the only concrete shit that's written down are beats/plot points. i'll figure out the rest later!

7: How'd you decide it would be Hob's POV?

i actually never even considered writing it from Dream's POV. this was my first fic in the fandom (which is so nuts to think about lol) and writing in Dream's POV sounded so scary lol. i also just thought Hob's would be easier because i have worked a few backstage shows, back in my college years. i figured eh, i can make this work. and i loved exploring how weird and mysterious musicians can be, from a normie's POV. making Hob a fan first and having him worry about developing a parasocial relationship... it was fun to explore.

“It’s–” Dream laughs quietly, bitterly. “I don’t like change.” He says each word with emphasis, eyes trailing down to fixate somewhere past Hob. “And I still hold onto the things I can control, like my instruments–” his eyes swing up to regard Hob apologetically. “Or my clothes or my–” he brings a hand up and wiggles his fingers around his head. “My hair.” ch.4

"His majesty is pleased." ch.5

“You are obsessive,” he states, slow and cool and with a quiet smile cracking through his composure. “Just like me.” ch.7

“You look good.” Hob has to lean in to say so, unwilling to raise his voice amongst the roar of the fans. ch.11

26: Share your favorite detail

how intentionally coy Dream behaves. i love keeping him a mystery and deciding when and how much to allow his intentions to peek through has been so fun lol.

Despair is in fact covered in tattoos and piercings! i say this because i feel like sometimes i forget lmao. (but also her and Hob don't interact much so. my bad haha).

Delirium's constant explosion of color in the way she dresses <3

Hob's dedication to his job, Dream, and the people he cares about the most. i don't care if people think i'm making him too soft and good, im gonna project on that man and make him a sweet, sweet simp lmao

and ah, this doesn't matter anymore, and i kinda regret doing it but. i originally had Dream's favorite bass all black but the pickguard was white. so it actually looked like Jessamy. not gonna lie when @designtheendless drew it all black i decided i liked it better that way. and truly i do. that's when i went back to ch.1 and changed it haha. to actually see the guitar with Dream, all done up sparkling black and purple flecks... gosh it's just so him. but then i got up to the reveal that the guitar's name was Jessamy and i was like, "oh, right." lmao. no one seems to care so i'll leave it be.

27: Share a piece of lore you made up for the story

i have a lot lmao. and this post is already so long... im hoping i can get to some if not all of it in side fics in the future. but for now, here's some that's more like headcanons but:

Dream hates flying. he can full on go into panic attacks on the plane if he allows himself to get into his own head.

this was mentioned briefly in ch.4, while Dream was discussing the formation of the band, but Despair was in another band before joining Endless. she is the only character in the fic who gets to keep her English roots (lol sorry) and is the oldest in the band (30).

all of the band members ages: Dream, Desire, and Death are all 28 and Delirium is 22.

Dream can experience subdrop after going too hard during a performance.

Dream paints his own nails, it's very therapeutic.

as an exercise, i explored my own headcanons for Dream in this verse in a word doc, and one thing i will share from it that you might find interesting: If I were to ever give Dream a theological values, I would describe him as a satanist. He is a physical and pragmatic person, nonconforming, and although he is introverted, he enjoys being a part of a community (he loves his band).

also found this in my notes: How Desire and Dream got along was Death making them fight it out. Hob raises an eyebrow “like in a brawl?” He couldn't imagine Desire throwing hands. “No, in a pillow fight that escalated in hair pulling and verbal taunts.”

I'm curious to know how you manage your documents for fics, so I've come to you with a few (possibly fun?) questions regarding your process !

1 - How do you name your documents? 2- If you have a multichapter fic, do you keep it all on one document, have a separate document for every chapter, or something else? 3 - If a situation arises where you want to make a drastic change that can essentially end up deleting thousands of words, do you commit to deleting those chunks and start fixing them right in the original document, or do you resort to making copies first so that you still have the original? Something else, maybe? 4 - Optional freebie slot ! Tell me something about your process that you might want to mention, but I didn't have a question specific enough for you to mention it !

hellou whoooo, thank you so much for the ask, here`s how my mess of a brain organizes everything?

1- most of the time the titles are just the theme of the fic, so for the Handsome Cop universe ie the title of the google docs was police AU for a long time, Ive had names like roommate AU, ame trio AU, flower AU etc very straight foward. I only change the title of the google docs once I settle on a title I really like, and that usually happens when Im about to publish and have to come up with something hehe

2- I keep all chapters in one doc, and also, if Im writing a series, theyre also in the doc because I often need to reference it to check some infos or really just the tone of the writing up until then. The worst part is correcting some info that you`ve been using for some time, like the age of a character changes, or something that happened in their past and they reference it a lot, then I have to go over the whole text and look for the specific mentions of that info and it just sucks

3- I have a google docs called kill your darlings where I put the scenes and ideas that were edited off my final drafts, I often go through the drabbles to check if there`s any cool idea in there I can re use under a new light

oh man 4 it`s gonna be a wild one

while reviewing and editing I often use text to speech tools to make sure that the writing sounds natural, its really useful for non native english speakers like myself

I have a spreadsheet of all my wips, with their % completion status, whats still on the pipeline to be written, and just silly ideas that I want to explore in the future (I had to do this because I had more wips than I could manage and was drowning in plot bunnies hehe)

when Im stuck I like writing on my phone because its hard to care about formatting, so I just shoot hundreds of words into a doc that when I open up in the computer looks like a enormous wall of text, and its easier for me to correct, edit and fill in the gaps once I have the main content on a page (blank pages scare me)

I often write all the dialogue of the scene first, and then fill in the gaps with descriptions and inner monologues, this way I make sure the conversations in my fics have some rhythm to them

most of my stories never had an outline, I just get this scene in my had and then I have to do the work around to get there and after it the consequences of it, right now Im working on my cowboy bebop AU and its the first time I really planned a plot, but I dont know whether is better or not

sometimes I go back to read my fics already posted but I often get an itch to correct things like wording and typos, but I dont because thats a rabbit hole I don`t wanna fall into

haha i’m tempted but alas i shall hold out until it’s fully complete :’) and no it’s a multichaptered fic. im drafting up chapter 6 and im aiming for it to be about 16 chapters long? so ive made some progress at least :)

it’s actually a kind of sequel, follow up fic to this one i wrote not long ago. i have like. an entire whole lore to this fic that’s been brainworming in my head for the last year haha so being able to just punch out most of it so quickly has been pretty fun :D

so whilst i can’t post what ive already written so far for you, i can give you a little sneak peek :)

“I could kill you, Mikey.” His brother yells, fists curling tight around the wheel, making his knuckles glow red. “I could actually kill you.”

Mikey gulps. He finds the frayed edge of the cuff again and tugs on it, like if he yanks hard enough it might unravel his whole being, and he could just turn to nothing on Raph’s passenger seat for the rest of time. “I was just the driver,” is what he offers up.

That apparently was the wrong thing to say, evident in the way Raph’s eyes go comically wide, and his jaw twitches at the strength of which he clamps it shut.

“Alopex had to bail you out,” he tells him, so angry and raw his voice cracks. “She used her money she’s worked really fucking hard on because you can’t fucking help yourself.”

The cop station parking lot gets a bit of foot traffic around where they’re parked. A young mother strolls on by with a child skipping at her side whilst a group of teenagers bounce past them, laughing as they swap phones to no doubt share videos.

“I’m sorry,” Mikey says, voice impossibly small. “But. But you knew what Hun was about, don’t– don’t act like you didn’t work for him too once upon a time.”

Raph’s hands slam against the wheel as a frustrated growl crawls up past his lips. “Jesus, Mike, is that going to be your excuse every single time?”

Mikey can’t look at him, so he stares at the dashboard. There’s the remains of a torn away sticker, something he vaguely remembers putting there himself years and years ago when this car was Leo’s and he was small enough to still have sticker books.

When he doesn’t answer, Raph keeps going.

“I made my mistakes, Mikey,” he says, voice suddenly calm and level. It makes the temperature in the car drop about ten degrees cooler. “I made my mistakes with Hun and the Dragons but I owned up to them. I fixed them. I turned my life around.”

Childishly, Mikey feels tears spring behind his eyes. He fails to blink them away in time, so he resorts to scrubbing his face with his sleeve – Raph’s sleeve technically.

“I can help you,” Raph says, he says it so tiredly yet it holds so much weight still. “Leo can help you, Mike. All we wanna do is help you.”

i’m very much an outliner for long fics! for one shots i often free write or just name like a handful of things i wanna hit in the process. but for multichapters my outlines have gotten more detailed as i’ve gone along, and i typically have at least broad outline before i start writing at all.

4 - Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?

they come to me as hallucinations. gifts from the heavens perhaps. idk man they just show up in my brain. sometimes i get ideas from songs, other times i get ideas from just. day to day life. for example, my hockey au idea came from attending a hockey game irl and being like what if….itafushi

24 - Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?

remember that one anon? i dont think thats bad advice per se but i think they could have been kinder with how they phrased it. sure i was already a bit burnt out with writing but like. idk man that really stuck in my head and made me doubt everything ever.

i mean it wasn’t even advice it was a criticism, but in terms of creative writing i’ve only gotten advice from jinx and sam and it was good, so yeah. closest thing to bad advice i’ve gotten

29 - What’s your revision or editing process like?

hmmm right now i’m in a weird spot bc koi no yokan was written entirely in july, so my edits have mostly looked like rewriting what i wrote back then to sound better. bc i can write better now

other than that i dont typically have a beta it’s just me so. i definitely proofread and look for grammar or phrasing that can be fixed also typos bc i write late at night. generally i try to leave the basics of what i have and enhance it. i tend to neglect physical aspects of stories in favor of emotions so i have to go in and edit that part fs

71 - When it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

i’m still trying to find a method that works for me. right now i still just stick it all in one outline but i find myself losing track of small details or subplots. currently working on improving my system for my Big AU that only ao3 glazers know about

77 - Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from koi no yokan? 

hmmm i’d say megumi and yuuji’s first kiss. i wish i’d dragged it out a bit more to really show how much that moment shattered megumi’s world (in a good way). like that’s kinda the start of his “awakening” and the catalyst for the rest of the story it’s just a very meaningful moment i think.

One idea I have is a Songxiao no eye transfer AU because BSSR doesn't open the mountain back up to XXC and how they have to deal with that. Also I have yet to write any Witcher fic but I've been playing Witcher 3 and I really wanna write a Vesemir POV fic that's 5+1 "5 times Geralt sent some random-ass stranger to Kaer Morhen and 1 time he came home" inspired by all the times in Witcher 3 when you can help someone and then be like "Oh yeah you'd be welcome at Kaer Morhen"

How long ago did you start reading or writing fanfiction? Damn, I had to been when I was around about twelve or maybe thirteen. I don't know if anyone remembers the-ndotcom message boards, various Degrassi message boards (mainly Degrassi boards aka DB, anyone around, I honestly doubt it?), and of course, fanfictiondotnet my online life in the mid-2000s.💗

When I was third grade, I remember writing things that resembled fanfiction. Typically based off of some shows I saw (such as Sabrina the teenage Witch, TGIF line up was awesome) or books I read like The Boxcar Children or Junie B, for these writing journal prompts for school the teacher would assign us. When I say it's all cringe and embarrassing as hell, Let's just say I'm glad no evidence of that writing existed. That wasn't even the tip of the iceberg there, I also wanted to *be* a friggin' author. I'd even include these cheesy bios for each 'book' I would make for myself bc I'd always see them in books I read in childhood.

Fast forward to 2003, my first fanfiction (when I knew I was writing fanfiction) was a doozy for Degrassi written about Sean, Craig, and Emma in some weird season 2 timeline with a love triangle, an ill-fated camping trip, Sean's newly sober mother made an appearance in the form of a camp organizer desperate to reconnect with her son and bring him home much to his chagrin, and other things I forgot about and wouldn't wanna think much on. I was basically winging it. I'm afraid it's gone. I had notebooks and notebooks filled with stories around this time.

10. Worst writing habits? Abandoning and giving up without a doubt. A horrid habit that becomes tempting when I get writer's block, and then I just start the hell over and make something totally new and forget about it drop it like a bad habit, and the cycle comes back around like a shitty boomerang. I then will read the old one months or even years later and be filled with regret or have five million new ideas for said abandoned story. Maybe then I rework it in the future someday or in a whole dif story which has been done before. I am already my own worst critic, but I hate super flaming, negative criticism that shit doesn't help anyone except be tempted to give up.

Some fic I abandoned needed to be, such as the Zoemund vehicle in a weird alternate season thirteen titled The Starlet and Dealer. Not that I need to explain myself, but I didn't feel right writing something portraying a couple with literally no chance on any planet, not even interested in men on the whole didn't make much sense. Also who would read that considering all that? It's available on fanfictiondotnet who cares? I moved on it's never gonna have an ending.

Backtrack has more of a chance of getting an ending, and yes, it's an *almost* ten-year-old fic, just saying.😄😄😄

Another habit is simply beating myself up, comparing myself and just simply hating on myself which I gotta stop doing. Honorable mention, stuff like not being in the mood to write, or getting too much on my plate and then not writing.

15. One-shots or multi-chapters? Multichapters Angst? Yes. Fluff? Yes. Smut? I'm not that brave ha, not for a lack of trying. I usually do the ol' Disney-style cut away. I'm so lame. Hurt/comfort? Yes. Fantasy? Nah. Romance? My bread and butter🥰. Which one is your favorite? Hmm I'd say romance with multiple chapters all the way! Which one is your least favorite? My least favorite is when the protag gets pregnant and the whole story is just fucked after that because it just doesn't interest me. It's just so unoriginal and a little predictable. Unpopular or popular opinion who cares, not every love story or romance ends with a baby or a pregnancy 🤷‍♀️. I'm down for a wedding that would be something fun to tackle in writing. No, really though, out of the listed, I'd say I don't care for fantasy.

16. What’s your favorite headcanon or trope? For semma related fic's stories, I like incorporating things such as emphasis on photographs, flashbacks to past events, and some other memories from their past relationships with one another or things we didn't get to see. For example, Emma had this little box with moments like movie ticket stubs, Sean's old denim jacket (before he started wearing hoodies), Emma's retired dolphin pants, obviously photographs, a few burned mix CDs, letters, and or notes passed from class, and more miscellaneous items.

As for Emma and Jay another Degrassi pairing I write often, for example, I like including a treehouse motif. It's a long story, but in my invented backstory for Jay, Connie (Fancy) is his mother, She left his father for Mr. Edwards (Darcy and Clare's father) she met at the strip club. They had an affair resulting in pregnancy so there's a drama with that. Obviously, Jay and Darcy clash (naturally) and act like they're not related at school is an arrangement beneficial to both for Darcy's popularity and Jay had a reputation to uphold and also there's Jay's young maybe five year old half-sister from Randall and Connie named Christina affectionately nicknamed Chrissy. Jay resents his mother for leaving their father and making this new family with these stuck-up people he seems to detest and what it did to his father who had fallen in a reclusive depression since their divorce.

Chrissy idolizes Jay and serves as an honorary shipper for Emma and Jay, and sometimes provides comic relief. At Jay's dad's house is where the treehouse comes in, and Jay's super attached to it and his father too who he is still close with. The treehouse is a special spot for Jay. He eventually brings Emma into his world and treehouse, and the setting symbolizes a lot in their relationship. All this lore was created long before Jay or Darcy had a canon backstory or last names purely based on speculation. There's also related Jay/Alex lore about their past relationship, invented things from their dysfunctional childhoods. I also have a host of headcanons for Emma, Manny, and JT's childhood memories growing up together.

For tropes, I dig the first love/true love, mutual pining, enemies to lovers, slow burns, and secret relationships/forbidden love is always fun to write. I recently attempted a fake dating story Faking It/(a03)

Oh jeez, the actual number is not one I'm willing to count... But WIP's with the intention to finish and post... I think I'm sitting at around 4 right now?

angsty one-shot (the premise of this is actually really cool- an AU where Glinda goes with Elphaba after DG, becomes a healer on the front lines of the fight)

smutfic sequel, currently at nearly 6k words and still more to go 😔😔😔😔😔 (not actually *sad* about this necessarily, just like... all these words, going to smut...)

WIP that I may finish, it's more just a few sentences of ideas than anything, based off of this song

23. How do you choose where to end a chapter in multichapter works?

Ok so in my years writing, I've gotten a lot better at 1. writing outlines and 2. actually sticking to the outlines. Take Per Aspera for example, I have the overarching plot written down in a 13 page bare bones outline, and then I flesh each chapter out with its own outline more.

The only times I break in unplanned places is if the word count is getting to be Too Much. Chapters 13 and 14 of Per Aspera were supposed to be 1 chapter, but I decided to break it into two for readability's sake. Might wind up doing the same with the second part of the smutfic. We'll see.

29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic.

I've decided to share the unfinished doc that was the very root of the inspiration for Per Aspera Ad Astra. It's the beginnings of a short scene about the summer heat that I wrote in the dead of the coldest winter I've ever experienced. A lot of it is just scenario and context, but this unfinished doc is literally what started it all

It was a particularly hot summer afternoon, and Glinda was absolutely overcome with boredom.  Her parents were out of town yet again, and all her popular friends were on vacation- without her. They had all practically abandoned her the second she even mentioned the possibility that she might not be straight.  Small town life as a mostly-closeted lesbian wasn’t easy. Nearly everyone in the tiny Kansas town of Shiz had made their stance on ‘them strange city folk’ very clear.  And by ‘strange city folk’, they meant anyone who wasn’t straight, white, or Christian.  Her phone buzzed twice.  2 new messages from Elphaba Speaking of not straight, white, or Christian…. -hey.  -bored as hell, wanna hang out? Glinda sighed. Elphaba was her best friend and, to put it nicely, the town freak. She was the atheist daughter of the pastor of the only church in town, she was inexplicably green and unashamedly queer.  And Glinda was stupid enough to catch feelings for her.  She was bored out of her mind and needed something to do, but the very thought of spending time with Elphaba made her stomach flip in the best possible way.  She decided to type an ambiguous response. -idk. it’s sooo hot out and there’s nothing to do here anyway The response was almost instantaneous.  -we could drive to Wichita, do some shopping. I know how much you love shopping Wichita was almost two and a half hours away. There was no way she’d survive that long in such close quarters with the girl of her dreams. She needed an excuse. -ugh that’s so far away, besides, my parents just got me a bunch of new clothes for my birthday, I don’t really need anything -besides, you hate shopping -yes, I do. but it makes you happy and that makes me happy  Glinda blushed. Why did Elphaba have to be so infuriatingly nice? Before she could recollect her thoughts, her phone buzzed again. -we could go to Nanny’s. then figure out if we want to do anything else from there? -ooh, I’m starving. Nanny’s it is then.  -great, I’ll be right over Glinda’s heart was racing. She knew that she had no right to be crushing on her best friend this hard.  But her mind would always wander to Elphaba’s emerald green skin, her dark, captivating eyes, her gentle smile that she usually kept hidden from the rest of the world, that sweet, sweet smile that she wanted nothing more than to kiss- no, she banished the thought.  Needing to refocus her mind, Glinda rolled out of bed and decided she’d better get ready. She checked the weather on her phone: 90 degrees with 55% humidity, basically ridiculously hot.  She switched out of her t-shirt to a pink tank top and shorts. She heard Elphaba’s truck pulling into the driveway, so she kicked on her sandals, grabbed her purse, and hurried out the door.  The heat outside was oppressive. Glinda didn’t realize how much she relied on air conditioning until the few seconds she was forced to go without it. 

And that was all I had written in the doc. This is from February of 2019 so the style and characterization is a little outdated by my current standards. But, there it is. What would have happened, had this played out more:

they get lunch at Nanny's

they drive around in Elphie's truck, stop somewhere for ice cream

hello friend, thanks for the ask!! realized i reblogged this without access to a laptop and had to wait til i had mine again to answer 😂 but here we go! (Also don't apologize, these are fun! Mostly I'm sorry because I can't answer briefly like a normal person, and this response is probably going to take up a lot of space, lol.)

2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?

I don't have too many multichapter fics, and I think they've all been done differently, haha. "love don't roam, but occasionally it wanders off" was mostly outlined in advance. "the rose-pond swap" was me messing around at the beginning, but then people read it (lol, how dare people read this) and I frantically tried to plan the rest of it (and we can all see how that went 😂). "the weight of words" has the barest skeleton of an outline just to keep track of the canon timeline, but otherwise is just being made up. "my mind turns your life into folklore" was written on a complete whim, no thoughts head empty just eightrose. (I think we can infer here that planning worked best, but alas, it also appears that I'm bad at that.)

gravity like a lunar landing - Twelve is a major challenge to me, and I'm really proud of this because I think I managed to properly explain the way I see him in this one

Barcelona: Where No Doctor Has Gone Before! - Is the plot good? no. However, there are five Doctors, and it was fun, and even if I wish I'd planned it better, I'm fairly pleased with the result.

a more literal method of compartmentalization - I suspect this will always be one of the ones I'm most proud of, in that I knew what story I wanted to tell and somehow I got there? Wrote this in a sleep-deprived haze so no clue how that happened, but I'm glad it did!

16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?

Technically speaking, a lot. Things I'm actually thinking about writing? Maybe like... 5? 2 are Spotify asks from the frickin 2021 Wrapped game and YES I've started I swear 😂😅 I just got stuck. Various other people/conversations have had me revisiting like 4-5 things I'd jotted down in the past (Eight chameleon arch, a tenrose Bridgerton thing, a sequel to something, an out-of-order thing). Uhh, in non-DW news, I've got a Hellcheer thing I really want to write that's mostly about "right person, wrong timing" angst (with a happy ending because it's me, lol).

28. On average, how much writing do you get done in a day?

Most days, I don't write. When inspiration strikes, anywhere from 500 - 2000 words, probably. On a few rare occasions, I've just cranked out the whole story in one sitting, but I don't generally have time for that nowadays.

40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

This is such an interesting question... I've never really even considered this. I think one of the scenes I most consciously decided to try to make pretty is the Woman Wept scene in LDRBOIWO (that is a bad acronym lol), so that could be nice? I'll have to think about this more!

65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

Honestly, at the moment the thing I'm most hopeful about writing is the Hellcheer thing mentioned in 16. DW-wise, though, I really want to go update all of my WIPs sometime soon, and I want to get at least one of the songfics done--I feel like I'll feel way less guilty about starting new projects if I wrap up some of the outstanding ones.

Hello, everyone! This is the first Marvel fanfic I've written in nearly 8 years, and the first I've put on Tumblr Thanks NWH for bringing me back into the fandom, and Spider-Man PS4 and Miles Morales for making Earth-1048 Norman Osborn my absolute favorite. Feels good to be back in the fandom!

A few things to mention:

1. This first chapter is pretty dark. While other chapters are likely to be a bit lighter, I wanted to start it off dark as a warning for what’s going to come ahead. If this isn’t your type of story, please feel free to drop or leave it at any time.

2. This is a slow burn multichapter story, so you won't get to see some Harry action until a little later.

3. My science is likely MCU level accurate and not SM PS4 accurate. So don’t learn too much science from this fic.

4. This story will also be cross-posted to Ao3 with a slightly different chapter layout, since it’s easier for Ao3 to handle a longer chapter than Tumblr.

Shivers crawled up the little mouse's spine, the tiny nose quivering at the crisp air. One pink foot glided forward ever so slowly, followed by the next, and the next, until the little mouse began to crawl. Yet still, despite how methodical or desperate its moves became, it couldn't outrun the looming shadow above. Darkness seized the mouse's sides, squeezing it until every fibre in its body caved in upon itself. What wasn’t crushed soon burned inside its belly as flames tore away at the remains. The mouse wheezed. It collapsed upon the table, one more gasp accenting a cry for help from the human. Only then did its eyes still, unblinking.

Mouse no. 48. The last one of the pack tested with chemical formula GR-27. Unlike its predecessors, the substance entered its system through oral ingestion rather than skin diffusion, nasal intake, or injection. And unlike its predecessors, it had died the fastest. Even if its human handler did have the means to save the mouse, it wouldn't have been quick enough. The gruesome death unfolded within seconds after the first symptoms. And all Norman Osborn could do was watch with paralyzed horror.

A gentle hand rested upon his shoulder, but its intended comfort meant little to his shattered mind. At most, it took his attention away from the gruesome scene. "I'm sorry, Mr. Osborn."

"Sorry?” Norman turned to the scientist, watching the other squirm under his cold gaze. “You said you fixed it.”

“The formula didn’t have time to properly settle, it wasn’t ready—”

“Excuses won’t get you anywhere, Connors." Curt Connors quieted immediately, and Norman returned to studying the mouse. He'd have the creature undergo an autopsy later, but he doubted he'd learn anything new from it. The previous 47 mice all revealed decayed insides, some of their insides still shrivelling up during their operation. Had this been ideal circumstances, the chemical would eliminate any genetic imperfections alluding to onset disorders within each specimen. Or at least reduce the disorder's symptoms to a tolerable and manageable level. Instead, GR-27 slashed at the insides of every subject before it could heal them. It didn't matter how many modifications the drug underwent. The result remained the same since its invention in the 1980s.

Any sane person would have given up long ago.

Once upon a time, he was sane.

But that was before he watched the love of his life decay in irreversible slow motion before his eyes. Emily told him not to worry, but he never listened. He knew loneliness. He had experienced it when his parents died, and he didn't want to go through it again. For the second time, GR-27 promised an answer to the otherwise incurable Oshtoran Syndrome. Yet it was hardly more than a scrapbook of research thrown together desperately on the day she died. And it was barely more than a single page of known information the day Harry was diagnosed with the same disease eight years later.

Which was why Curt's pessimism aggravated him so much. "If you did your job right, we could have had a breakthrough already, Connors."

“Mr. Osborn, I know he's your son, but we’ve tried everything. Chemotherapy, gene therapy, aggressive medication, nanotechnology. You've reached out to research groups across the world, and none of them can refine a treatment in time for Harry."

"So we keep testing GR-27."

"I understand you want to try a unique method of utilizing CRISPR, but why are we reinventing the wheel? Why can't we modify CRISPR/Cas12a?"

"We tried that, too. The current system doesn't fix DNA, it deactivates or destroys it."

"Why can't we bring him to a hospital? They can give him proper care, with legal equipment—"

"The hospital didn't save Emily!" A mild headache settled along his brow, reigning back his frustration until only helplessness laced his words. "It won't save Harry."

No more words passed between the two as they sterilized the lab, Norman scanning their way out of the lab with his ID keycard. Exhaustion must have shown through his features, for the doctor's eyes trailed Norman's face as they walked up the stairs. Norman didn't have to guess too long, for a few seconds later, Curt confirmed his suspicions.

"You should get more rest."

"Sleep can wait. Finding a cure for Harry is my first priority." Norman reminded. "You of all people should know what that feels like when your only son's haunted by death."

"But I also know the other side of the story," Curt said. "If you don't take care of yourself, Harry might not have a father to wake up to. You can't do this all on your own. We need more than two people to know about this.”

“You and I are enough to care for him.”

"You're delusional, Norman."

"And you're fired, Connors."

Curt stopped in the middle of the stairs. "Norman, wait—"

"I won't have this type of incompetence anywhere in my organization. Especially when handling my son."

Curt opened his mouth to rebuttal, then decided against it. "Yes, Mr. Osborn." Bitterness laced his tone.

A bitterness Norman chose to match in his own words. "You have until tonight to take whatever copies of research you wish to."

The words hardly left his lips before a tiny beeping upon both men's watches interrupted them. A sound that changed Norman's anger into fear and exhaustion into fuel.

He skipped his way up the last of the stairs, only realizing Curt wasn't beside him when he reached the top. The man remained in the middle of the stairs where they last stood. "Connors, what are you doing?"

"You fired me."

"God fucking—you can sign the reemployment papers later." And that was all Curt needed to join Norman as they headed to the main floor of the penthouse. By no means was the penthouse complicated in navigation, but the few winding halls encouraged Curt to stay close to Norman until they reached the Osborn boys family portrait. A panel to the side activated the entrance to a hidden lab room behind. A room so dark each step risked tripping over a misplaced item.

Yet neither needed to turn on a light. Mechanically hinged panels retracted down the length of a giant chamber at the back of the room, giving way to a green, luminescent liquid inside. The light splayed across the room with such vigor no object could hide in the shadows. The only obstruction to the light was from inside the chamber. A single figure hung from the support that kept him buoyant. Seizing and crying for help along with the watches.

No work of fiction could ever scare Norman as much as the twitching frayed body of his son within the liquid. The nanotechnology coils meant to work in symbiosis with maintaining Harry’s body now flopped about, struggling to hold his limbs in place. Occasionally, its grip slipped, the younger Osborn sending it wiggling through the water or banging against the side of the chamber. Harry’s seizures already horrified Norman when he wasn't under experimental treatment. But in the aqueous setting, a new layer of helplessness stung at Norman's eyes until it blurred his vision.

"Norman, check his vitals,” Curt called as he scribbled in a notebook documenting Harry's hearth.

The doctor's voice grounded Norman back to reality. His fingers flicked upon the tablet connected to the tank, revealing the many variables the symbiote kept track of. He expected to see the vitals at varying levels, so when every single one appeared within normal range, Norman's anxiety worsened.

"Alkalosis," A soft, feminine voice in his head told him. He had no idea where it came from—nor did he appreciate the cold shudder running up his spine—but he couldn't question it now. Not when the blood pH did, in fact, read 7.46.

"Alkalosis by a hundredth," Norman repeated aloud to Curt.

"What's your call?"

Short answer, fix Harry. The longer answer required Norman to waste precious seconds to watch chemical simulations in his head. Each simulation revealed the various reactions to different chemical balances Harry may undergo, Norman scrapping any ideas that turned for the worst. Those that did work competed with one another until his mind settled on one concrete answer.

"200mg of symbiote with 500µL hydrochloric acid. Injection just distal of the lister tubercle. Connors, get the symbiote to raise him. I'll make it."

Curt wrote the formula in the notebook then climbed the ladder along the chamber to open the top. He drop a small Remote Operated Vehicle into the acid. The ROV's electric prongs chased the symbiote around, forcing it to raise Harry towards the surface. Meanwhile, Norman fetched the case of symbiote nanotechnology and put the allotted amount in a vial. He poured hydrochloric acid droplets atop the symbiote, then vortexed the vial before drawing the solution into a syringe.

The two switched spots, Norman removing his watch and donning an electrical-insulating gloves. Curt adjusted Harry’s position one last time with the ROV and shocking the symbiote to make it stiffen, Harry pinned in place by one hand. The doctor hovering his hand over a button that would electrocute the entire chamber should the symbiote get out of control. "Ready?"

"Ready."

It didn’t take much to realize Harry was too far down for Norman to easily reach. Curt made a move to reach for the ROV’s controls, but Norman had other ideas. Besides, a few chemical burns were survivable. Or so Norman figured as he thrust one hand through the acid to grab Harry, twisting the younger Osborn's arm until the wrist was in sight. He injected the formula before letting Harry go. Norman shut the chamber top and Curt lowered his hand from the button.

Almost instantly, Harry's twitching slowed as the new symbiote thread through his body, distributing the hydrochloric acid. Relief drew a sigh to Norman's lips as he returned to the ground.

Curt, however, didn't share the same joy. Disapproval has taken over his face once more as he yanked the syringe from Norman's hand once the older was on the ground. "It's a wonder how you're still alive sometimes."

"Says the man who turned himself into a lizard," Norman retorted as he put his arm under a drizzle of cool water. The water only aggravated the pain, hinting the chemical burn could be worse than he predicted.

"And if you lose your arm to the acid, I'll be turning you into a lizard too." Curt took off his gloves and tossed them out before checking the tablet. "Blood pH is 7.43. His fingers are still twitching but it's not life threatening."

"Good."

Now that things were back to calm, Norman willingly eased his mind until fear had him in its grasp. His eyes scanned over the tank with careful scrutiny. Afraid to tear his gaze away from it. As though this could be the last time he would see Harry alive. Optimism only carried him so far, yet it could never deny the truth: at most, Harry had a month left to live. Maybe less.

Norman scoffed at the thought and took his arm out from under the water against Curt's precautions to continue to irrigate it. In the green light, the damage didn't look bad, and he used the dimness to hide the severity as he fetched the first aid kit and dressed the burn. He tucked the bandage under the sleeve of his dress shirt so Curt couldn’t see it.

Harry's fingers stopped moving, but the silence wasn't comforting. The sight still churned Norman's stomach as his headache continued to flare. Though from his own insufficient efforts or remnants from his yelling, Norman couldn't name.

"Clean up here," he instructed. "I'm going to get some air." With a final glance towards Harry, Norman exited the lab.

Now standing in the living room of the penthouse, Norman’s eyes fell upon one of the many bookshelves tucked along the penthouse walls. This particular one held books from Harry's youth, the most prominent collection being books about Morse Code and American Sign Language leftover from Harry’s fascination with the two as a kid.

But the books weren't what caught his attention. Rather, it was the single picture in the middle shelf. Drab color and slight sun bleach tainted the picture in an older light, the photo’s date reading 1994 in the corner. And yet it never took away Emily’s beauty as she held her newborn son. Norman still lost himself staring into her eyes. Sometimes he’d still feel her resting her head upon his shoulder. If he voided his mind of any thought, he could hear her voice.

But today he only saw the photo. No ghostly feeling nor voice to accompany it. Emily may be smiling, yet a single tear threatened to fall down her cheek, her gaze wordless and begging. Begging for him to save their only child, even if it meant reaching across the multiverse to do so. How, she wouldn't say. How could she say, when the world she knew was already outdated?

The distant feminine voice that drew shudders along his spine presented itself again.

"You're failing him."

A stalker, Norman reasoned, and one he planned to confront when alone. Probably another creepy paparazzi that somehow snuck their way into the penthouse. He’d have his assistant Lucille chase them out in a few minutes.

"You okay?"

Curt's footsteps didn't reach his ears, but his presence was enough for Norman to know who stopped next to him before the scientist spoke. The same presence that once assured him of Harry's survival suddenly irked the older. So much so, he instructed the scientist, “Go home for the day."

Curt frowned. "Go home? There's still a few hours before the sunset—"

"You heard me the first time." For once his tone remained collected. "Pick Billy up from school. Take Martha out to eat. Just get out."

"Do you want me to sign those re-employment papers—"

"You were never fired."

"Right. That makes sense." Curt still didn't leave immediately, opting to throw one more option for a solution. "Tomorrow I'll contact Dr. Michaels. Maybe his research of the antiserum found something."

"Fine. But only in person. I don't trust the phone."

“Okay.” Curt gave a tight smile, suddenly forgetting the dozens of times he doubted Norman's words throughout the day as he said, "It's just a minor setback. We'll find another way."

Norman scoffed and chased Curt off. The scientist spoke as though he understood everything. As though their shared experience of their families under extreme circumstances could bridge the gap between them. It was an effort, Norman gave him that. It was genuine. It was an effort to lighten the conversation.

The only problem was that Curt's little family of three survived.

Norman’s didn’t. And likely wouldn’t.

if theres one thing that im horrendously frustrated with myself about, it's that im bad at Having Goals For The Future. not in the sense that i'll set goals and then fail them, though that does also happen. but the more Often thing that happens is that i just Dont Set Goals Or Dreams For Myself At All. JHVKSDJVFJKDSFVSDFD

which, in itself, lies a general goal i wanna start working on: get some little dreams and ambitions! nothing too big, because haha aiming high, in THIS economy? //sobs. buuuut i do wanna give myself achievement homework so that theres always something i can be working on when im not working on jobwork

writing wise, ive set up the following more specific goals :D

i want to create a Volume 2 to the "The Journal of NXX Investigation Team Behavioral Studies"!!! because ive written a bunch more analyses since then, and ive also been planning the finer details (like how to improve my layouting HAHA) of this behind the scenes already :D

i wanna write more totfic, deffo!! but specifically, i want to only stick to oneshots and chapters for fics i Already have posted and only ever do a new multichapter work once ive had EVERYTHING written for it already. i dont like that i have a lot incomplete multichapter fics on my ao3, so this is me trying to fix that bad habit ive got.

aaaaand ive got a tiny goal for my original writing, actually!! ive been in the process of revamping my original writing website, but i dont wanna publish the site until i have a new recent work i can add onto my archive of works already stored there
