We’re already almost half-way through 2019..how crazy?! I haven’t updated on here for a while so I think I’m due for another post. Career-wise, I’ve reached another milestone after recently securing a job in another company in the construction industry. The company is well-known and respected for its paint and coating products and is a brand that I never imagined I’d work for. It’s crazy knowing that my first day there as an ‘Estimator & Admin Support’ will be in exactly three weeks’ time (!!!). Actually long story short, I applied for the ‘Junior Contracts Administrator’ role there initially but was rejected (the Talent Acquisition girl told me that she and the hiring managers were impressed with me and my thank you email, which they forwarded to her, and that she’d give me a call should another role fitting for me comes up). A few weeks later, I get a call from the same girl asking if I’d be interested in applying for the ‘Estimator & Admin Support’ role (which is apparently in the same department/team but will be helping out the Junior Contracts Administrator - which is odd ‘cause apparently after a few months, the role will transition into a Junior Contracts Administrator role??). Anyway I told them that I was interested and then they gave me an Estimating sample task to complete. I got the task wrong in the first go ‘cause I misunderstood the requirements, but then the second time around I assume I got it right ‘cause they said they wanted to proceed to the next stage. I didn’t have to come in for another interview anymore ‘cause apparently they knew me well enough from the three times they had already interviewed me in the previous role I applied for. Eventually, after the medical test and some reference checks (thanks Michael, Jay and Robin T-T), I got offered the job! I’ve submitted all the required pre-start documents already and now I’m just waiting to start. But boy, has it been a rollercoaster ride. At first when I didn’t get the first role I initially applied for, I cried - but told myself that if this was God’s plan for me, then that was fine. I kept reminding myself simply; if it wasn’t meant for me, it wasn’t meant for me. Next thing I know, I get re-directed to a different role in the same department. It’s weird ‘cause that’s sort of how I got the role in the current company I work for now. The HR lady said they wanted me to work for them, but wanted to find a role that fitted me better. A year and a half later, I admit I’ve enjoyed my role as a ‘Project/Installation Coordinator’. It’s pretty cool how I can now say that I no longer have the same, if any, phone anxiety I had just around 2-3 years ago. I find it easier to join in and respond to office banter and are more familiar with the “office politics” they speak of, and the difference between good and bad management. I've also learnt that just because something has been getting done a certain way for a long time, doesn’t mean it needs to continue on that way. If you see a better way or process, go for it. Don’t be afraid of change or making mistakes. Thinking about the fact that I’ve never worked for a company for this long before and how I’m leaving not only colleagues, but now friends, behind is a bittersweet feeling. I couldn’t say the same in my previous job in my first full-time role as a Detailer as I didn’t really get along with my workmates there. But it’s different this time around. The people I’ve been working with for the past 1.5 years are good people - people that I’ve created many fond memories, inside jokes and experiences with. This time around was also the first time I resigned properly and with four weeks’ notice. It was awkward for the company to announce my resignation on a day I was away on leave for Levy’s graduation and my first Access Connections Mentoring meeting for this year (more on that later). Although there’s no way of really knowing if it would’ve been better had I not been away. My manager was very understanding and open to my resignation and told me that he completely supported my decision to further develop my career. He wasn’t in the office when I informed him so it was all over the phone. I had been dreading the thought of resigning but I think it wasn’t as bad as I initially pictured. I’m not sure how people feel about me leaving. I’m sure most of them are unaffected or unbothered. I will miss them though. Especially my team and all the people that have been there and helped through the ups and downs. Aww and my installers too (the subcontractors I scheduled for installation bookings). I feel like we’ve all become close and now it’s time for me to go. I came into the company at a time when a lot of people had already been there for a long time. Now, I’m leaving at a time when I’m one of the pioneering people in the company. Due to the high staff turnover I’d say around 85% of people in the company haven’t been there for longer than a year. This meant that I always had a group to fall back into and I was fortunate enough to never really be alone and left out. Robin, the one who trained me in my current role, resigned around 2 months ago. He was one of my references. Jay was another and his wife works in the same company as my Dad. Michael was my third reference and he knows someone who is currently applying for a role, and for his referral, for the same company that I got my recent job offer from. What a funny and small word we live in. I mentioned earlier that I had a meeting (for the Access Connections Mentoring Program that I’m a part of) with my mentee which was just last Thursday where we met up at a cafe called ‘Stovetop’. It was nice meeting her. I couldn’t help but think that it seemed like she had her life together already though. Her Dad owned a construction company and she works once a week as a Design Assistant at a pretty big company. To be honest I felt a bit intimidated and inferior when I read about her background and what she had accomplished in her life. I kept wondering why she needed a mentor. Then the day of the meeting came and it turned out alright. I opted for the casual and raw mentoring vibe where I didn’t worry too much about formalities and just voiced out my truth and how I really thought of the construction industry and how it was like working in there as a female. We chatted for just over an hour and then she had to attend a lecture/class and I had to go to Levy’s nursing graduation. Our next meeting will be on the second week of July, where she hopes to get some tips on resume writing. Sometimes when I think about it enough, I wonder to myself how anyone can see me as an adult or take advice from me. I’m literally still trying to figure my life out as well and now I’m giving advice to people only a few years younger than me. I feel a bit crazy sometimes but hey when am I really going to feel like an actual adult though? Probably never.

As I draw closer to the next chapter of my life which I like to think is when I start my new job in three weeks’ time, I feel like I’m due for a bit of a life makeover. I need to get my life together again in terms of health/fitness, fashion, how I present myself to people, helping out around the house. I haven’t been to the gym in months, I’m breaking out pretty bad and I feel like I’m starting to look and feel old. Which I shouldn’t!? I’m only 24 - this is supposed to be my peak. Or the beginning thereof. I really need to get this going. I’ve already gone grocery shopping for fruits last week and I’ve started to incorporate more healthy eating. Now on to the other things on that list..

I've been wanting to get a civic for a first car so I thought maybe a 2000 civic si and then realized I liked the 7th gen civic coupes alot more so when I went to get an insurance quote every company is telling me its about $400 a month even on my dads insurance. p> Again Kaiser’s fingers touched against him, and this time he held an elegantly crafted dark blue leather collar in his hands. Daisuke noticed two things right away: there was a leash already attached to it and it didn’t have a buckle, just two ends.

p> “Stay still,” Kaiser ordered, and Daisuke did just that. Which was getting more and more frustrating with every passing moment. Kaiser wrapped the collar around his neck, spent a few moments adjusting it, the two ends brushing together on the back of Daisuke’s neck. He could hear a tiny sort of hiss, then Kaiser tugged the leash and nodded in pleasure. “No one else but me can take that off of you.” He rested his hand against Daisuke’s cheek, staring into his eyes, a mix of passion and command that melted Daisuke’s knees. “You look fantastic like this.”

p> Daisuke’s head spun at his tone, let alone his words. He tried hard to catch his breath, working even harder to convey that he wanted to ask a question. If Kaiser recognized the fact, he ignored it. Instead, he tugged on the leash again.

<

p> “Come along. We don’t want to be late for dinner.”

<

p> Daisuke followed Kaiser through the confusing corridors of the fortress, every ounce of his annoyance focused on finding a way to break through the commands and get his freedom back. His body acted in all ways as if it didn’t care about freedom, but just the bliss that washed over him whenever he did what Kaiser wanted.

<

p> He’s wrong. He’s just wrong. Wrong about all of it. He couldn’t be a Digimon. It wasn’t even close to being possible. And the others would have said something to him if they were too. This was all just some kind of weird, screwed up trick of the Kaiser’s. It couldn’t be anything else.

<

p> They entered a wide room with a table set with a delicious meal on it. Daisuke thought Kaiser would do something ridiculous like make him beg to get fed by hand or something. Instead, two places had been set up and Kaiser gestured him to one of them.

<

p> “Eat,” Kaiser ordered. “We’ll talk more after we’re done.”

<

p> Nothing about this was making Daisuke feel any better. But his legs and arms obeyed the Kaiser – something he found himself getting used to even as he hated it – and he settled down into the indicated chair. The food sent up tempting aromas and he let himself be tempted. At least Kaiser knew enough to feed him. He wasn’t going to complain about that.

p> And yet the Kaiser also didn’t take his eyes off of him, even as they ate. Daisuke couldn’t shake the feeling of those intimidating, intense eyes on him, before he stopped and gave Kaiser a look of his own, trying to ask without words why he kept doing that.

<

p> His look must’ve said more than he’d thought since Kaiser smiled at him, brushing his fingers across Daisuke’s cheek.

<

p> “I’ll allow you one question for now. But then we finish eating.”

<

p> Daisuke’s thoughts crashed into one another as he tried to grasp enough of what was going on to form a proper question. He’d wanted to know ever since waking up what Kaiser had in mind and now he could ask… and now he had no idea of what question he wanted to say!

<

p> Something finally forced its way out of his lips. “Why are you treating me like this, master?” He hated that last word. But Kaiser’s orders remained unchanged: he couldn’t try to get around his orders and he had to treat Kaiser with – unearned – respect.

<

p> That got another of those smiles that said he knew far more than Daisuke did about the situation. The answer didn’t tell Daisuke what he wanted to know, either.

<

p> “Because you are mine now, Daisuke. You just need convincing.” Kaiser tilted his head in thought. “But you don’t need to be afraid of me. I’m not going to hurt you. I have no reason to hurt you. I don’t ruin what’s mine.” Again his hand caressed Daisuke’s cheek. “You’ll give me what I want eventually, and give it to me because you want me to have it. I can assure you of that.”

p> Funny, I don’t feel very assured.

<

p> And Daisuke found he could say something else, something that felt so much better than anything he’d said since Kaiser’s voice called him to wake up.

<

p> “I’m not afraid of you, master.” He wasn’t. He wanted to beat the Kaiser’s stupid head into the wall, remind him that a Chosen Child didn’t try to take over the world, and that he wasn’t better than everyone or anyone no matter how good he was at anything.

<

p> Kaiser still just smiled. “I think that’s enough chitchat for now. Finish your dinner, Daisuke.”

<

p> And again his throat closed to words and Daisuke started to eat, even though his appetite wavered just a fraction.

<

p> The Kaiser’s enslaved Digimon didn’t make another appearance until after they’d both finished eating, clearing off the table when they did show up, and all of them stayed as quiet as Daisuke himself was. He wanted to ask where V-mon was and if he’d been caught to. He still cursed himself for not having asked that when he’d had the chance. But there was so much that he really wanted to know and he couldn’t sort through it all to ask what he needed to know.

p> Once more led around by the leash, Daisuke followed Kaiser to a well-appointed bedroom, the bed itself large enough for three, and covered in satin sheets and velvet bedspread. He swallowed at the sight of it, eyes flicking over to Kaiser, who looked back at him, hints of amusement glittering in those barely visible violet eyes.

<

p> “I told you I wouldn’t hurt you,” Kaiser said, voice low and rich and so very amused. “You won’t share my bed until you enter it because you want to.”

<

p> So where am I supposed to sleep? Daisuke asked that with his eyes, if nothing else. Plus, he didn’t fully trust Kaiser not to order him to want to.

<

p> But the Kaiser instead opened a door on the far side from the one they’d entered by and gestured inside. Daisuke saw another small room in there, a bed not as large as Kaiser’s, but suitable for one person, with an extra pillow that had something on it that lit Daisuke’s eyes.

<

p> V-mon!

<

p> Before he could take a step, Kaiser’s hand rested on his shoulder and Daisuke turned toward him at once.

<

p> “Tomorrow begins your actual training in what I want from you. You’ll learn about yourself and why you find such pleasure in obeying me.” The side of his mouth turned up. “Yes, I know that you do. You’re probably hating that you do, but you feel it anyway.” He leaned forward. “That is why you’ll come to me, sooner or later. I hold the keys to your happiness, Motomiya Daisuke, and I’ll never give them anyway to anyone else. Get used to the idea of belonging to me. Nothing can change that now that the process has begun.”

p> He rested a kiss on Daisuke’s forehead. “When you sleep, dream about me and what pleasure you find in being mine.” To Be Continued Notes: Daisuke has a rough road ahead, no matter how truthful those promises are.

Ask a Husband #2: The No Spouse Rule

“A few months ago, when planning a group event with about 6-7 people one member of the group laid down the “no spouses allowed” rule meaning it was a night for just us friends to get together.  We all agreed although we noted that, at the time, he was one of the only single people in the group. Recently, however, at a similar group event where the rest of us had again followed the “no spouse” rule the same person who had been adamant about this rule for all get togethers brought his significant other along.  How can we speak to our friend about being hypocritical and rude to our significant others without attacking him? Sincerely, Spouseless”

Inviting or excluding significant others is always a touchy subject. It starts when we are teenagers, waiting all day to hang out with our best friend after school, only to be devastated when he brings his new girlfriend along and you spend the whole day uncomfortably trying to play Halo as they dry hump each other two feet from you in your parents basement. It's like f&k you Steve, I wanted to beat The Maw on legendary today, not spend four hours avoiding eye contact with the boner lump in your sweatpants.

Even into adulthood you run into it from time to time. My wife gets invited to weddings without a plus one every once in a while even though we're married presumably because the couple to be is trying to keep head count under control. If we're being honest in this situation, this is fine with me as I have no interest in attending Janet the HR person's wedding so that I can spend three hours at the weird leftovers table with someones socially awkward work friend Peg, the bride's asthmatic cousin Barry with the lazy eye and sweating condition, and a suit jacket that sits by itself on an empty seat all night because whoever was assigned to that spot did the smart thing and got the hell out of there.

I guess what I'm saying is that in all stages of life, sometimes there is going to be friction over when you do or don't bring along significant others.

That being said, this seems like it is much more commonly going to be a dating conundrum than a married person one. Married couples tend to have integrated into each others respective groups of friends, so it becomes less of an issue as opposed to when you are just dating someone, especially if it is a new relationship. Even so, I get the appeal of the no spouse rule on occasion for everyday social situations. Sometimes you just need a night with your friends minus significant others, it's healthy.

Now, it seems in your particular situation we're looking more at boyfriends and girlfriends as opposed to spouses. When you throw significant others into the mix with a group of friends, especially a 'new' significant other where they don't know anyone besides the person they came with it changes the whole dynamic of the group. Sometimes that's fine. In the sage words given to us by the Spice Girls "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends". If a significant other is going to be around for a while, they've got to become familiar with the group at some point, otherwise you end up with that friend nobody sees anymore because his new girlfriend or boyfriend is dominating all their time. Still, sometimes you just want to go bowling or something with the old gang.

I don't know any of the people involved in this situation, so I can only speak in the most general of terms and operate on some basic assumptions. 

The first basic assumption that I am making is that your friend is pretty much a good guy and not a raging self-centered douche scooter. With that assumption in mind, I don't see the request for the no spouse rule at the first gathering as totally out of the blue. As I mentioned, sometimes it's nice to just hang out with the old gang, and really nobody wants to be the only one at Applebee's who can't order the 2 for $20 because he's by himself. Is it maybe a little selfish to institute the no spouse rule if the rest of the group isn't really down for it? Sure, but I can sympathize with being socially uncomfortable as the odd man out. I feel for the guy, so I can't get too bent out of shape over it.

Now the second get-together is maybe a little harder to justify. To play devil's advocate, I guess I can understand after having been the only single guy in the group and now finally having a boyfriend or girlfriend to bring along he was excited to show them off to his group of friends. It's mildly annoying but really I guess it depends on the fit of this new significant other in to the group. If they turn out to be awesome and get along with everyone, no harm no foul for the most part. If they are an insufferable mule that makes everyone want to slam their hands in a car door so they have an excuse to leave early not so great.

As for how you proceed with this friend, I'd like to introduce you to a philosophy by which I try to live my life. A philosophy that I believe keeps me from being an insufferable piece of garbage in many situations where folks tend to take the aforementioned human garbage route. I always ask myself "Is the aggravation of pressing this issue worth the potential reward, versus just letting it go?" 

Let me give you a few examples from my own life of the application of this mantra:

I used one of those photo printing kiosks you see in drug stores or Walmart to print up a few pictures that my wife wanted to frame. On one of the pictures, the printer screwed something up and left a black ink smudge across the center of the photo. I could have gone back to the store, shown the incorrectly printed photo to them, asked for a refund and had the pictures redone. Or, I could eat the $2.14, not have to fight with anybody, and just reprint that picture. I did not consider the reward of maybe $2.14 and some sort of pointless moral justice for my screwed up picture worth the inevitably awful interaction I would have had to have with an employee. I just reprinted the picture.

An additional example: Once something malfunctioned with our cable and took out our TV and internet service. I spent an hour on the phone with customer service troubleshooting before it was determined that a technician was going to need to come out and replace hardware. When it was all said and done, by the time they were able to get someone out to us, we were without TV or internet for three days.

I love my wife dearly, but there is no reward too small for her not to go through any amount of headache in the pursuit of justice. She insisted that I call our service provider and demand a refund for the time we were without cable.

To break that scenario down, I would have started this process by spending a minimum of an hour on the phone, most of it likely listening to hold music as I resisted the urge not to bite through my tongue and bleed to death rather than listen to another second of a synthesizer rendition of "I'm sailing away". Once I finally reached someone I would then have to petulantly demand that I be reimbursed for my inconvenience. I would be making this demand to someone who has likely already had this conversation approximately eighty-seven times today and gives exactly zero fucks. After all of that, presuming that I don't walk away empty handed and get I my reimbursement what have I actually won? If I pay $140 bucks a month for cable, I'm paying roughly $4.60 a day which would come out to a whopping $14 reimbursement for the days we were without service. Thanks, but I'll take not ruining my evening for maybe getting fourteen dollars or maybe getting politely told to go fuck myself by Verizon's customer service associate and have the recording of it immortalized for quality assurance purposes.

Now, apply this principle to this trouble with your friend. You may have a different barometer for your hassle/reward ratio than I do, but were I faced with this situation, at least where it came to the two get-togethers already passed, I would just let it go.

At best it goes well and you have a decent conversation with them about it, but still ends up being a whole thing. You can't get away with just texting them "Hey Ur GF can't hang with us anymore LOL!" and be done with it.

At worst they get offended and defensive and everyone gets dragged into a fight about it. A poorly handled no spouses rule violation helped break up The Beatles, don't let it happen to you and your friends too.

In all reality probably the best thing you can do is let what is done be done and take a proactive approach for future outings. Knowing that this friend has a history not quite getting the memo just realize you've got to be extra clear with them on expectations going forward.

If you do find yourself in a situation where this person is the dissenting voice in the group on if significant others should or should not invited along, avoid terms like "hypocritical" or "rude" even if they may be fitting. If you put someone on the defensive, they often shut down and you get nowhere with them.

Demonstrate that you understand their point of view and offer them your alternative. Try to make your points focused around the group as a whole rather than singling this person out as a problem. If you can win them over to the rest of the group's way of thinking without making him feel like you lectured him or hate his partner's stupid face it'll make life a lot easier for everyone.

If the group is looking for a "no spouse night" let him know that you all still like his significant other and would love to plan something soon for everyone, but that tonight other folks have already worked it out with their own significant others and you'd like to keep to the plan this time.

If its the other way around and he's pouting about significant others tagging along, make it clear that there will be plenty of opportunity to have a "just the gang" night, but it's important to welcome the partners of members of the group into the fold as well. 

As I said before, this all operates under the assumption that your friend is not a rabid uppity twit and is capable of being reasonable like an actual person. I don't know him, so maybe he is in fact a giant bag of assholes. If that's the case my advice is the group just tells him to jog on.
