Happy Birthday Bloodborne
Seeing as it’s the 5th year Bloodborne has graced this mess of a planet with it’s omnipotent light I figured write a little thing about how much the game means to me. I’m going to get fairly personal so if you don’t like that kinda thing feel free to skip.
The first time I beat BB I didn’t think much of it, honestly. I’d had a rather basic playthrough where I didn’t see pretty much any of the optional bosses or do any of the story. I did as Gehrman suggested and just hunted some beasts. I took a break from it for a while and didn’t return to it until my life started getting... Difficult.
My parents a year prior had gone through a rather turbulent divorce. In the wake of this, my sister and her boyfriend moved in so we could all help my dad pay for his house if only just barely. At the time we all knew even with four of us we didn’t make the type of money to help make payments and the inevitability of him loosing the house was a constant and looming stress. Worse still, my sister only agreed to move in if she was added to the mortgage, meaning she could threaten to sell on a whim, a privilege which she started using to strong arm me and my dad in to behaving a certain way. Her boyfriend was verbally abusive towards everyone, but especially condescending to her. Tension grew between all four of us, but especially between me and the boyfriend. I could ask my sister if she wanted to go out to lunch and catch up and she’d respond, “Let me ask my BF”. His control over her became apparent and the wedges he was intentionally drawing between her and our family was impossible to ignore.
All the while I was working a 4AM shift at a Zoo in the winter and barely getting any daylight or human contact since I had to be in bed so early to wake up for the drive. I cleaned a mile of glass in the dark every day non stop, only to have it be dirtied the moment the park opened. No matter how hard I worked to keep the park as clean as I could, even to the point of putting on dust masks to knock down spider, the higher ups weren’t happy with our companies work. As our contract was rapidly coming to an end, rumors began to circulate that we might not have it renewed if things didn’t improve. Worse still, someone had been stealing from the supply closet. Supposedly only the managers knew the code, and this sparked massive distrust in the Zoo staff towards our department to the point keys were taken away and our lives were made harder by no longer having access to vital shortcuts around the park which made getting from place to place take even longer in the miles long local.
This futility and rage sparked the most obsessive play through of a game I’ve had to date. Undeniably, these situations were hopeless and lonely, and Bloodborne is a game that understood exactly how I was feeling. The Hunt is, after all, an eternal nightmare. No matter how many beasts, kin, or humans you kill, it’s an unending loop of uncertainty and oppressive danger. The tenuous state of things in Yharnam was uncomfortably familiar. Only in the game, it was far easier to focus on the things I could control.
The weapon I wielded. The stats I chose to upgrade. Which path I wanted to explore. The fluid combat enabled more split second choices every second, helped in large part by a generous stamina bar. More so than Dark Souls, Bloodborne expects you, the player, to take charge. You either commit to an aggressive plan and kill the beasts, or you die.
When I first started, I played extremely cautiously and likewise did not have a lot of success. On new game +1, however, I began to realize that vital element. Hesitate and you die. Commit entirely and live. The more I played, the more I meditated on the very nature of what this game was communicating to me.
In my actual life, I hadn’t come out as trans yet and it was something I was viciously debating internally. Earlier that year I tried to commit suicide. I half came out in the hospital, telling the ICU nurses my name was Mike. But even in the psych ward I was terrified to speak to social workers and groups about those feelings... Being that I had 6 hours completely alone and in the dark, it gave me time to listen to a lot of media by trans people. I distinctly remember one video where a trans woman was describing what dysphoria feels like and openly sobbing. I was starting to understand the core of why I hated myself, my body, and my current situation so much.
But I was afraid. Even after the epiphany that I wanted to come out, I had a lot of doubt on if I could afford HRT, if I could commit to it, and what people would think. I worried starting T and in turn second puberty would bring back my horrible temper that I had going through it the first time. When I say I had rage problem, that’s putting it mildly. I’ve punched people before just for touching me when I was younger, and with the situation between me and my sister’s boyfriend getting more tense by the day I was rightfully concerned it might erupt in to actual physical violence.
And so... I continued to come home from being alone all to spend most of my time alone playing Bloodborne. It was a great game to keep my mind off of things because of how much focus it demands to play. Funny enough, once you get good at it, the beasts are also a great punching bag.
A lot can be said about how Blood Vials aren’t the best method of healing. Having to stop boss attempts because you need to go farm some red Estus isn’t great design. However, running around that first part of Yharnam with the beast claws just shredding through citizens like a wild animal is possibly the most cathartic thing in my life at the time. It made me feel powerful, unstoppable, and like I was in complete control. I knew exactly how to handle the big pats one by one, and eventually I got skilled enough to just run into that big mob by the tree and stop people anyway because of how good the audio queues are at letting you know when you gotta dodge. I spent hours in both this location AND Chalice Dungeons farming for Echoes and consumables to the point that controlling my character in Bloodborne feels as natural as walking.
I started beating the game faster and faster. I was on +5 difficulty and working on the DLC by myself when things escalated...
At this point, I knew staying at my dad’s house wouldn’t be possible. The verbal fights between me and my sister were getting more and more prevalent. More than that, I knew it was time to come out and I didn’t feel secure doing that in an environment that was actively hostile. The plan was to save up, move out with two friends... But moving out came far faster than I had anticipated.
A few days after my birthday, we had a family meeting. I don’t remember what sparked it, but we all sat around and voiced our complaints with each other. When it was my turn to speak, I brought up the fact my sister’s boyfriend had been intentionally isolating her on top of in general just being a jackass to her. He’d make her get things for him, call her stupid when they played games... The works. I don’t remember what he said that sparked it, but I remember the feeling... A really familiar feeling I hadn’t had in years. My pulse thundered in my neck so hard I couldn’t hear anyone over it. I started yelling incoherent shit. My sister stood in front of him because I was aggressively stepping forward. It was that temper I thought I’d knocked coming back. If she hadn’t gotten in the way, I’m absolutely sure I would have pummeled that man. I hadn’t felt that way since I strangled a kid in school to the point he nearly passed out.
It was then I knew I had to leave. By nature, I’m violent. I hate it. But the decisiveness which I’d slowly been building helped me find the courage to admit this.
I took off in my car and just hauled ass to the highway. I had a bloodborne CD I’d been playing on my way to and from work. It sounds silly, but larping I was just a hunter during those crushing morning shifts was helping me keep going. Sure it was hopeless, but I felt bad ass to keep trying. I needed to have an unbreaking will to deal with this dilemma. Having so recently made a second attempt to kill myself, I had this powerful urge that no matter what I couldn’t end up there again. So, I decided not to beat myself up about it and just accept that I had to move on and away from what little family I had left.   I remember not really thinking words. I listened to Gehrman’s music on repeat with the windows rolled down going 78 miles an hour and just... Screaming. Literally screaming as loud as I could in to the night. Over and over again until it hurt just to breathe.
Even though I felt betrayed by the people I thought were closest to me there wasn’t anything I could do but endure.
Eventually I arrived my current roommate’s parent’s place where they were living at the time. I told her and her husband what happened. We went to the store for something. I got a call from my dad saying my sister was threatening to move out and apparently had yelled at him for not keeping me in line despite the fact at one point he’d physically gotten up and started yelling in my face to calm down. That was it. I asked my friend’s parents if I could move in temporarily and... That was that.
The next day we gathered up all my things. I had to leave my dogs which was possibly the most agonizing part.
But that night? I beat the orphan of Kos by myself on +5 on my computer monitor plugged in the wall and set on a box. Doing that was this weird extreme elation. It’s like I’d defeated two massively difficult, seemingly impossible tasks in one day. I’m glad I had help with the moving, though. Unlike Kos, that would have been impossible alone haha.
That weekend passed and I went back to work at the Zoo as normal. After I finished my shift, however, every employee in my company was called to a meeting. This was it. We all knew what was coming. We were to be laid off in December, giving us 3 months to find new work or apply to the company that was taking over the contract.
In the wake of this news, moral plummeted. No one really tried that hard. I was coming in high to work every day and drinking with a coworker during our shift while we tired our best to continue work. That last month I worked there was a weird drug addled haze of extreme emotions mixed with ignoring them in favor of listening to VaatiVidya lore breakdowns of Bloodborne.
I was going home and spending hours on art inspired by the general vibe of the game and my impossible to digest feelings. I’d lost my job, home, and family. I don’t know if I would have survived without both Bloodborne and my art as an outlet.

In the following months, I had gotten to New Game +7 and started recording myself trying to kill bosses without healing. Even though to this day no one watches these attempts but me, making them was frankly vital to keeping me distracted and focused on something I could control.
There was a time where I didn’t think Ludwig +1 was beatable but... Here I am two years later happily having 100% Bloodborne and beaten every boss on +7, most of them without even needing to heal.
The biggest lesson I took away from this game was persistence and decisiveness. The Souls series in general made me realize something huge that to this day has helped me fight my depression back. I’m a stubborn fuck who will grind and grind and grind until I finally achieve victory.
Fight for the progress you want to make. Things seem hopeless a lot, but you have to keep going. With effort, you can change anything you want to in your life.
Two years later, I’ve been doing HRT for 1 year and 3 months. I just had top surgery done. I’m working a job I like that’s got normal daytime hours and pays more than any work I’ve ever had with benefits. I don’t think I would have had the tenacity to stick to these things without realizing a fundamental aspect about my personality thanks to the help of Bloodborne specifically.
I can endure, learn, grow, adapt.
Thank you, Fromsoft. I hope this conveys a shred of what this dumb little game means to me. I needed Bloodborne so much when I moved out. I’m so glad it exists.

Reidentified woman
Frequently asked question that I will leave the very long response to here, “How did you go from being deeply entrenched in gender ideology and mainstream transactivism to being what many would call a terf?’
Here’s my first draft, not super coherent but I’ll probably edit it down at some point: You may notice it getting less coherent as it goes on lol
Basically a lot of stuff just didn’t add up and I couldn’t maintain that level of cognitive dissonance.
Sexuality: –If sexuality is about an inner sense of “gender” and not what sex people are, how and why have homosexual relationships have been and are still persecuted? –Doesn’t it make everyone bisexual? If everybody can be attracted to anyone who looks like anything as long as they “identify” as the “gender” they are attracted to, what even defines sexuality? How can you be attracted to a gender? As in, what’s the difference between a male who calls himself a man and a male who calls himself a woman who both look the same that would supposedly cause a lesbian to be attracted to the later but not the former? –Is it possible for a woman to be only attracted to vulva? To be not attracted to any dick ever? Surely it has to be possible, claiming it’s not possible sounds exactly like forcing women to like dick, denying their own attractions and how they know themselves. Claiming everyone must like dick. That’s fucked up! And that’s what happens when sexuality is about “gender” instead of sex. Sexuality being about sex just makes sense, it makes the categories of heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual have actual meanings –What rights do a male and female in a relationship lose if the female identifies as a man? They are still legally allowed to have sex, get married, and be together in public, all the privileges that come with a heterosexual relationship. Is it not wrong to claim that that relationship is homosexual? Doesn’t it make a cruel joke out of the actual gay experience? –It just kept sounding like sick conversation therapy to hear gay people called horrible names and bigots for saying that they are only attracted to the same sex. Especially those posts about how gay people can “learn” how to love/enjoy sex with a trans partner Sexism –No one could provide a solid explanation for why it’s alright for a male to claim to be female but bad for a white person to claim to be black –No one could provide a solid definition of woman. If anyone who “feels” like a woman is a woman, what does it feel like to be a woman? Do little girls forced into marriage and fgm all “feel” like girls? Do the women who experience acid attacks and sex trafficking “feel” like women? How is it not sexist for men to say “I always liked playing with barbie and I want to have long hair and wear makeup, therefore I must be a woman” or worse “I’m quiet and prefer doing my nails to sports so I must be a woman” They are taking stereotypes and making them the definition of woman. –I realized, there are as many different ways to be, look like, have interests, act, feel, dress like, a woman as there are adult human females on this earth. The only thing you can say all women have in common, is being born female, otherwise it’s just sexist. –Socialization is a thoroughly studied subject. Trans identified males still commit crimes at the same rate as other males, not at the same rate as women. If there is one way to “act like a man” science says so far the way to do that is to be violent, and transwomen fit the bill. Basically no scientific reason that having dysphoria actually makes someone the opposite “gender” or sex. –Following the last point, I kept seeing information on women’s spaces being taken away. If transwomen were “women” theres still plenty of evidence that being female-bodied is an axis of oppression. And yet, any female only spaces are continuing to be taken away, they don’t care about female oppression and deny it even exists. Transwomen wanting access to female-only spaces just displays their male entitlement even more, goes to show they aren’t women. –For example, bathrooms, prisons, sports. Women fought for these spaces and now men are invading them, and we can objectively see it’s causing harm and danger to women and girls. Even if transwomen were women, they would still have male socialization, and be literally physically male, and that would still make them dangerous to women. –The way transwomen sexual predators are treated. They are treated like victims as well, people defend using women pronouns for them and criticize you for not doing the same before they criticize the transwoman. They are still famous. Or, people claim that those weren’t “real” trasnwomen. Which makes me think, how do you tell the difference? How do you tell who to let into the bathroom then? And really, no true scotsman fallacy. –The way they claim an inverted penis is the same as a vagina. It shows a deep carelessness for the true nature of female biology, what it’s meant for. It shows they think of vaginas as just sockets to have sex with and nothing more.
The way Dysphoria is treated –The checklists to take to see if someone is trans are the exact criteria you could use to tell if someone is gay or will grow up to be gay –Statistics show that children who are very nonconforming and uncomfortable in puberty will most likely grow up to be gay. Transing these kids seems like a way to make them straight, like how gay people are forced to transition in Iran. –In the community any questioning of one’s “gender” is met with You’re Trans. This doesn’t account for the fact that gender roles is what’s used to oppress women, to make them weak, small, submissive, restricted. Of course women are uncomfortable with their gender! Also consider that all sex characteristics of women are plastered all over the place in ads, movies, music videos, extremely sexualized, degraded, objectified, ogled by everyone. So of course women develop in puberty and then feel like they Don’t Want that, they don’t want to be a walking object! Breasts for many women are a cage, a sign that you are for male consumption, it’s hard to be reminded of being a woman in this society. But transactivism doesn’t care about that. If you question the norm, you’re actually a man. –The community is full of ways to get transition materials Fast without questioning the other reasons for dysphoria and without trying other methods of  recovering from dysphoria. They say, if you have dysphoria you must be trans. No one says, talk therapy can help you recover from dysphoria the same way it could help you recover from anorexia. Just change yourself! –By getting materials Fast I mean, access to binders, hrt, and surgeries. They tell 14 year olds how to buy binders and encourage them to do it without encouraging them to talk to older butch women, older dysphoric women, detransitioned women, anybody. They don’t talk about how even binding “safely” can still cause permanent damage, about how optimally a person should be able to love their body just the way it is. They talk about how to get hrt without even having to see a therapist, about how young it’s possible to get hrt. How young it’s possible to get a mastectomy. While you’re young do it now as soon as you can never talk to a therapist go for it! –How detransitioned people are treated as never having been trans, as never having been truly dysphoric, as people who are trying to trick you and deceive you into denying your true trans nature, as people who are denying their true trans identity in the same way that christian homosexuals are denying their homosexuality. They act like saying therapy should be the first option is the same as trying to “pray the gay away”. –Hrt and surgery is treated as glamorous and the details are hidden. Just take “top surgery” and “bottom surgery” for example. Never “mastectomy” or “colo-vaginoplasty”. Experiences in my life that added to what I saw in the news –I was identifying as a “gay trans man” for a while. I have/had dysphoria and have been dating a man. What basically never made sense to me was that we could go out in public, get married, etc and never face any discrimination. So what makes our relationship gay? Furthermore,  homophobes I met were perfectly fine with us dating. Even after they found out I identified as a man, they didn’t care that we were dating or see it as a sin, they just hoped I’d learn to accept myself one day. What they care about though? That my boyfriend is bisexual. Because Same Sex Attraction is what makes someone gay or bi, it’s what homophobic people hate. They were against my boyfriend’s same sex attraction, not his supposed same “gender” attraction. –A transman in a support group I went to would complain that people don’t see her (heterosexual) relationship as gay! imagine that, complaining that people view you as a straight couple, a safe, socially accepted, straight couple. –I saw a gender therapist and basically said I hate my breasts and enjoy being referred to and seen as a man, and she was like “that’s valid” and told me where I could get hrt. I could have even gotten hrt without having to see a gender therapist, as an 18 yer old! That was 11 months ago, and look how much as changed. If I had decided to take hrt, I would have regretted it so soon, simply because I have since been given actual information on the topic. 18 is really not old enough to make that decision, especially when the trans community has so much thought control and discourages questioning. I needed a therapist who could talk to me about the pain of being a woman in this society, about Why I want to be a man and not just accept “I feel like it” as an answer. In summation, so many questions I had but nobody could answer or would just call me a terf for even asking, so much blatant sexism and homophobia. It just didn’t add up.

I'm the anon who wrote to you about airport security. I just wanted to tell you that for body scanners I didn't mean metal detectors. Just check on google 'full body scanners'. I believe these are in airports all around the US. When you pass through the scanner you or the officer have to push a male or female icon button based on your sex. These scanners can found anomalies on one's body. If so, then they opt for a pat down. I want you to know how many trans people are humiliated by this.
OH WOW Okay so they’ve changed since I’ve flown. Apparently the things I used to go through were metal detectors of sorts or maybe just... straight up metal detectors. I haven’t flown in a while. In fact, I don’t remember when the last time I flew was. Every time I’ve gotten anywhere, it’s been via driving all these years. Jfc. The last time I had to go through an airport, it was via... I’m actually p sure it WAS a straight up metal detector. Because it was just... one little walk-through box that you didn’t even have to pause in. It would just beep if you had anything. Like. . .jfc. The things I’m seeing online are things that actually take maybe even full CT images of you?
I saw that you can opt out of using them, but ...I mean... if you opt out of using them, then they have to search you another way and what other way are they gonna do it than with a more invasive way than what everyone else is doing? Which. . .would be via the metal detector wand or a pat down? I mean, I guess. . .since they’re going to have security that strict anyways, they have to make everyone go through the same thing.
But I don’t know enough about them to really say anything other than that. I didn’t do enough looking other than to view images and see what the difference between a backscatter scanner and a full-body scanner was. I’m sure I can do more looking into that later because I’m sure it’ll cause issues for me later. . .especially after HRT causes changes in the look of my body and voice maybe years down the road (if I’m lucky) and I get my name changed as soon as I become a legal resident of this state and county. I probably won’t pass anytime soon, though. The dysphoria will still be extremely strong, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t have any anxiety issues like a lot of people do so I don’t have any issues with getting pulled out of lines for a pat-down or anything like that. And if I don’t physically see them pressing the button as to female or male, that wouldn’t bother me. Do you know if you see them do it? Coz I know in the short introductory video I watched (that honestly didn’t show much, so I’m just guessing, feel free to correct me if you want), the officer is not allowed to see who is in the scanner for privacy issues. So they’re like. . .in this booth behind the scanner. And then there’s an officer on the outside with you. Or some sort of set-up like that. There’s a lot of privacy issues going on with this thing, according to wikipedia (but we all know how “reliable” wikipedia is. It’s a good place to start collecting information, but not a good place for research). Even one regarding child pornography? Jesus fucking christ. Like what the FUCK.
But yeah, I can see how that would be an issue for a lot of us. I can see how it would affect me in the future, most definitely, when I begin to pass. I feel like people with anxiety have their dysphoria affected way more in social scenarios like that. With me. . .with zero anxiety at all. . .I’m perfectly comfortable in social settings and I even enjoy having the spotlight put on me like that. I enjoy the attention. I don’t like the touching, so that wouldn’t be pleasant, but it wouldn’t bother me. It would only be if I were to be brought off on some charge that I would have any sort of, er. . .negative effect because then that would threaten my. . .Idk, it would just make me have catastrophic thoughts in general, I guess? Whenever any sort of scenario like that happens where someone in power CAN gain the upper hand, my mind goes to catastrophic scenarios because there has always been someone else in the mix who already HAS the upper hand who WANTS THEM to have the upper hand on me (aka, my parents, past lovers, ex people-who-I-thought-were-”friends”-at-the-time, etc. . .). So I automatically forget that I’m either a) on my own or b) with someone/people who actually, genuinely care(s). So I just go into panic mode and usually what gets me in trouble isn’t even whatever they brought me in on. . .it’s what they caused by bringing me in. Aka, whatever they made me think by doing that. And the reaction to the catastrophic thoughts.
So I guess since I don’t really have anything to hide. . .there’s nothing that bothers me about this? And since I don’t have anxiety that ties into my dysphoria and I haven’t experienced any sort of consistent passing yet and my passing is not close to 50% yet,. . .it also doesn’t bother me? I also am assuming that when I DO start passing, it WILL start bothering me. And that when my gender gets changed legally and when things get all switched over legally. . .things WILL become a touchy subject with me and I WILL start being snippy with everyone except medical staff over correcting them when they use pronouns incorrectly.
I CAN see how this would really fuck up trans people who wear prosthetic stuff, though. Like a penis or a breast plate or any sort of padding. Like. . .to be FORCED to explain those things must be EXTREMELY uncomfortable for some people. Whereas I, myself, am very open about those things if I were to wear them. . .I know a lot of other people wouldn’t be. And it would probably even OUT some people without them thinking about it until it happened. Jfc. Especially people meeting up with their LD friends or something. “Oh btw guys I wear a fake penis/boobs/something. Ya all cool with that?” What if you didn’t WANT to come out just yet? What if you’re underage and with your PARENTS. Yikes. Yikes. YIKES. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. NO NO NO. I can’t even imagine. Like... ahhhh. All I wear is a binder. Like. I don’t and never will wear anything below the belt because all genitals freak me out and I wish I could get a certain surgery before HRT kicks up, but that deff won’t happen because money. So. I just have to be extremely uncomfortable and hate myself. Lol. But it’s okay. Ugh.
But wow. I didn’t even think about all of that until it just hit me right then as I was typing that all of the ways it could really fuck up a trans person’s day/week/year/LIFE. Fucking TRAUMATIZE a trans person. I mean, hell, I was traumatized when I was outted by my best friend (who is still my best friend) accidentally to someone close to me before I was ready and they fucking abandoned me over it while I was abroad once. Like. It was absolutely insane. I’m STILL not over that and I don’t think I ever WILL be. Imagine if it had happened because of a stupid fucking TSA scanner. Jfc. . . I can’t even. Imagine being outted while underage by a scanner to your parents and having to sit on an extremely long flight with your parents and then a long drive home or, worse, to a fucking vacation with family...... oh god.... I can’t even imagine.... And I can imagine that’s happened. Only to come home and be disowned. I can literally imagine that happening. If I had come out or been outted while underage, that’s something my parents would have done. I didn’t figure out I was trans until I was in my fucking 20′s. So. . . I mean. . .I somehow avoided that. But. . .I can imagine that happening to TODAY’S youth since they all have access to the web and all these resources and WOW. And that’s fucking terrifying.
I just...can’t even. There’s a lot of other catastrophic scenarios I can imagine, but if I write down more, I’ll give myself a panic attack and my valium script is out. Lol. Like I said, a lot of PTSD issues lately. I may not have any anxiety issues, but I do have panic disorder, which is a totally different thing. I may have the better of the two imo, but it still fucking sucks. Ahhhh.
I’m so sorry. I miss flying. I miss it a lot. But. . .I don’t miss all the TSA bullshit. Especially THAT part. And these scanners are bullshit. Wow.
