something i'm really excited to see in future palia is how they handle character development and character growth! i want to see reth get away from the cartel! i want to see eshe become a better person and mom! i want to see kenli grow a spine! i want to see nai'o learn that he doesn't need to take care of everyone at his own expense!
i'm not sure how they'll do it or what direction it'll be in but i'm so excited to see the characters change for the better (or for the worse 👀). just,,, OUGH

I may have a very conflicted and complex relationship with the Black church, general Christianity and other things, but when Tamala Mann hit my ears with that
'🎙🎶Take me to the King🎙🎶'
IT IS OVER FOR ME. I transcend, I cry, my problems are gonna be gone for the whole 4 minutes I listen to that broadsholder woman SNAG

unfortunately saw tamala hate thread #984349 on reddit, so i'm submitting this here to counteract it in my small way. i really love how tamala softens when you get to know her as either a friend or a romance option, even lets her guard down enough to joke around with us being in on the joke. she sounds like she really does miss us when we don't see her often too. 'mean' swamp witch who secretly just wants to love and be loved but needs time to show it is such a cool archetype. i love her sm.

Palia, a casual mmorpg review
A friend of mine was hyping a new game she was playing: Palia. Mostly she was hyping her attempts to romance one of the NPCs, but enough other details leaked through that I decided to give it a try. And I liked it.
I'm generally not a fan of the mmorpg genre, partly because I hate being social, and mostly because I hate fighting and my reflexes absolutely suck. Palia, thankfully, is more casual/cozy, and while there is a hunting aspect, they're all prey animals that run away. There's no fighting. Thank the gods.
The basic premise of Palia is that humans died out/disappeared a long time ago, leaving the world to the majiri, who have pointy ears and purple skin. There's also the grimalkin, a race of alien felinoids who arrived a few centuries ago and set up shop. And there are galdur, robots who have been around since the Age of Humans.
For Mysterious Reasons one of Palia's deities, the Phoenix, has started dropping humans back into the world, particularly around the remote village of Kilima. That's where the PC comes in.
A lot of Palia is your standard fare (I think). You get to know the NPCs and build relationships with them through talking and gift-giving (which is an actual mechanic of the game). There are quests and loot piles, and a number of skills you're meant to level up in: Hunting, Fishing, Mining, Cooking, Furniture Crafting, Foraging, Bug Catching, and Gardening.
The mainline quest, of course, is trying to figure out what happened to the humans and why you're suddenly reappearing. The list of items needed in order to complete the first part of the quest was... unpleasant, IMO, and involved a lot of epic-level rarity items that take a hell of a lot of time and resources to gather. That, again, is pretty much par for the course with games like this: allll the grinding. I've posted about that before, but thanks to some advice I did finally manage to get everything I needed. My main source of stress on that score is that I am a completionist, so leaving a task unfinished was stressful for me. Hells, it took me a while to accept that I didn't need to finish all tasks/requests immediately, and those are mostly plot irrelevant.
Once you accept that you don't need to do all the things right now ASAP, it's a lot more fun. Even the main quest only recently unveiled part 2, and while it includes some new (and easier, IMO) tasks to complete, it's also more waiting for the "big" update coming in '25, when a new area will be made available. Or I assume that's what's going to happen.
You get to build and decorate a house, which has been more fun than I expected. Tish, in particular, will make expanding your house easier, and you will get hecktons of furniture from loot boxes, from Tish's store, from recipes you can build yourself, and from the Grimalkin underground market.
I've been enjoying playing, even when all my current quests are filled. Even when there's "nothing to do" there's still stuff to do, and selling off all your excess supplies gets you more money for buying more things.
The NPCs are, for the most part, a lot of fun to interact with, even if every single one of them seems to have some tragic backstory. The only character I don't like is Tamala, and I think it's partly calculated that way. She's the witchy "vamp" type character and flirts outrageously with anything that has a pulse. I understand the narrative purposes of characters like that and I know the majority of the time the attitude is manufactured to keep folks at a distance, but I still find her unpleasant, manipulative, and mean-spirited.
The only real issue I have is that some of the longer-term players are clique-y assholes who like to tear into newbies for not following the unspoken rules of the game. Which are, y'know, unspoken.
Most people are very understanding of newbies and have no problem politely explaining the community-developed courtesy of "wait to chop down the magic trees til everyone can get here," but there's a handful who choose to bitch at each other about it and shame folks for chopping "too soon" and thus "ruining" it for everyone else.
Here's the thing: the grove of "magic trees" appears every in-game midnight, and time moves a hell of a lot faster in Palia, so you can get multiple groves in a single day. There is absolutely no reason to act like an inflamed, pustulating asshole just because you couldn't chop one grove. There's no reason to make newbies feel bad for not knowing something, especially when no one fucking tells them.
Thankfully that group is in the minority. I think I've only seen newbie-bashing bitch-fests twice, but that's still two times too many, IMO. Especially for, and I really can't stress this enough, something that isn't an actual rule of the game. If it was a rule, folks wouldn't be able to chop early. I appreciate the courtesy of people waiting for everyone to gather, but acting as if it's some grievous crime is fucking bullshit. Ugh.
Anyway, the game itself is fun. I love nerdy girl Jina and her helicopter mom galdur friend Hekla. Widower Ashura has Big Dad energy. Uptight librarian Caleri and her conspiracy-loving twin Elouisa. Zeki the grimalkin scoundrel with a heart of gold. Tau, the best pupper. Lots of fun and friendly characters, and very little need to interact with other players. You can also block/mute people or just mute the whole server, which is nice.
I'd recommend it, especially for people who like the idea of an open-world RPG thing but are more interested in stories than fighting. You'll get a lot of stories with Palia.

palia characters playing minecraft hcs
hopefully i got everyone but if not please do tell me 🙏
jel: spends most of his time dyeing armour and designing banners, has really efficient redstone farms set up to that end that everyone mooches off
tish: builds and decorates the most beautiful elaborate houses in the server. knows every building trick in the book. built the main lobby mostly by herself
reth: thought he was a genius when he first figured out the recipe for cake. never looks up anything and insists on discovering all the food himself
hodari: always deep in a cave somewhere with stacks of shulker boxes (courtesy of najuma). supplies the entire server, trades with tish a lot
najuma: in the nether within an hour, working towards an elytra. spends most of her time there and has an insane base
auni: goes exploring so far the only way he ever gets home is by dying and respawning in the lobby. keep inventory was enabled for him
badruu & delaila: too busy to play rip. their tech goes to auni and nai'o anyway
nai'o: built the farm empire of his dreams, but entirely without redstone so he never has time for anything else lol
kenyatta: plays during her shifts at city hall. helps najuma in the nether. hates that she organises her inventory so well
eshe: doesn't play. kicked everyone from the last server so they restarted without her
kenli: owns the server, logs in sometimes but always manages to ruin someone's project so he doesn't play as much as he'd like
einar: fishes 24/7. what can i say
hassian: lives in a dirt hut and is entirely content with that. spends most of his time taming wolves
sifuu: enchants everyone's armour, weapons and tools. sickass base. hunts for rare spawns
caleri: has a library where she manually documents every book she protects irl as a minecraft book
elouisa: dead-set on finding herobrine. subscribes to every conspiracy theory about the origins of mobs and dimensions
jina: invested in the lore. plays story mode because the usual game is too boring for her
hekla: watches over jina's shoulder and offers suggestions
chayne: doesn't own any tech
ashura: rebuilt the ormuu's horn in the lobby. kinda just enjoys the game and being online with people instead of gunning for anything in particular, but he does fish
zeki: set up a villager farm asap. its the main hub of activity in the lobby. pretty much has every farm possible going actually. charges for use so the others built their own
tamala: essentially lives the life of a minecraft witch. kicked a real one out of a hut and made it her own. set up a dungeon mob farm underneath

fatness in palia
(its gonna sound like i hate palia bc ppl dont understand the concept of nuance, so just to be clear - i decently like the game so far. things can be both good and bad, and some ppl, like me, enjoy analysing and criticising things without hating on the things.)
it rly bugs me that the only properly fat character so far in Palia is someone whos obsessing about his sandwiches and talking about how he always makes sure to eat properly, and *also*, is someone in a position of power who does bad things (the quest where we grew crops for him is the most clear example ive seen so far). basically - the biggest fat man is a bad person who is obsessed with food.
delaila is big, but also falls into a stereotype - shes a countryside mom (often fat in media), and parent characters are generally easier for mainstream fatphobic media to design as fat bc theyre not intended to be attractive in the same way the younger characters are (or older men, see hodari and ashura). i also want to point out that she reads as having a little more of a curvy body type compared to kenli whos more of a big ball, and that none of the female characters read as having the same type of facial fat or double chin that kenli has (which is indeed why im calling him the only properly fat character). its almost as if that kind of facial/chin fat is considered worse on women than on men or something :)) wink wink.
ashura and sifuu are big, but read as "strong and muscular", not "a fat person". which any fat person will know is a significant difference in how you're perceived. (there is also an aspect here ofc of that irl, masculine-presenting "bulky and strong" ppl are often more positively perceived than feminine "bulky and strong" ppl, and that masculinity being seen as desirable in itself affects why "bulky and strong" is seen as desirable where "just fat" isnt, but this is a sidetrack rn.)
elouisa and caleri are... chubby, i guess? i was happy the first time i met caleri bc she had a visible double chin. but, after a bit of playing, seeing that there werent any fatter characters than this who were supposed to be seen as attractive or even good nice people, that enjoyment weighs little. i also again want to point out that both elouisa and caleri have very "smooth" faces, and mostly "conventionally attractive" features, essentially. they are chubby/curvy, but not in ways that would be considered *too* far off from the fatphobic, ageist, sexist beauty standards of society. they also have basically hourglass bodies.
the characters that we are mainly "supposed" to find attractive in this game - the romanceable ones - range from very skinny to "fit". there is even a romanceable skinny robot, notably not a romanceable fat robot (hekla is round, reads as the fat mom stereotype, and is not romanceable - einar is tall and slender and kinda built like a dorito, and, oh, presents more masculine... even robots arent free from misogynist and fatphobic design). there is also a non-romanceable character that apparently both characters in the game and many players find hot, which is a non-fat man, hodari. i note this bc he's presented as an attractive character, and is not fat.
its nice to see an older(?) female character presented as attractive - tamala, however she is very skinny and with an hourglass type build. this is still... nice, i guess, but in the context of the lack of "attractive characters" that arent really skinny, or muscular, or hourglass shaped.....
another related issue is that a very skinny character, jel.... literally says things like "i havent eaten for 3 days". wow! thats lovely! especially together with kenli obsessing over food! and together with an average size character, jina, also mentioning she forgets to eat. that made me feel gross to read, and i dont think its a good choice to put "lol forgetting to eat, relatable content" in the dialogue of characters who are very skinny. this can be a bad reinforcement of society's abuse ("just starve yourself and you'll be skinny and beautiful!") for people with eating disorders and for ppl who struggle with their weight and with their relation to food in general. but *especially* when the biggest character is, in contrast, talking about how hes obsessing over his sandwiches and whatever (and again - is a bad person and also not supposed to be attractive, while jel and jina are supposed to be attractive and romanceable). this is also obviously a reinforcement of prejudice against fat ppl - that fat ppl eat too much, cant control their eating, are always thinking about food, etc etc, while skinny ppl ~forgot to eat lol~.
all in all, if anyone reads this, i just hope ppl can acknowledge and be aware to the fatphobia that has gone into the design of this game, *just like basically every other game*. im not saying palia is worse than other games, bc frankly, most games are like this, and its gross and weird and i hate that. but its still valid to discuss that problem in the context of one game, without implying that its an issue that only affects that game.
i hope that at the very least, they will eventually add in more body types to the character creator that also represent bigger people, and that potentially, we might see some attractive fat characters as npcs in the future. and no, their faces dont need to be slimmed down compared to their bodies to be attractive! they can have unsmooth faces and double chins and wrinkles and still be attractive! and they can have all that and not be men, and be attractive! and they dont need to have hourglass bodies nor to be muscular and strong to be attractive, either!

Here is my least favorite gal. I hate her, but sadly she’s hot. I will not change my opinion. But here, the Tamala stand can enjoy her.

I saw clips of the color purple and Colman wasn’t embodying mister like I was waiting for??? He didn’t make me hate him like I did Danny glover. Maybe cause Ali from euphoria is so engrained in my psyche lol idk. Also I ain’t know Ciara, Whoopi , Tamala Mann or David Alan Greer was in it—I’m not surprised with David, a lot of people didn’t know he was a theater person before he did comedy/movies. But I will be watching this movie!
Yea giiiiirlllll....I said the same thing!!!
Like, I LOVE Colman, but Danny Glover literally made me HATE his character. You know someone's acting is hella good when you literally HATE them, and can't stand to see them onscreen during the film rofl 🤣
Danny Glover WAS Mister.
Plus, I feel like the mere version kinda rushed through a few things tbh. Maybe that's why it didn't have the same intensity.
But overall, awesome film. 👌🏾

Also Tamala gives me Mother Gothel vibes. DDLV Mother Gothel cause I've never properly seen Tangled.
(I actually was drawn in by Ursula. My character will still give Ursula the benefit of the doubt. Gothel? Hell the fuck not. It was actually really interesting storylines. She would do almost anything for Ursula-steal and lie to the villagers even. Gothel got hate and fire in my eyes.
Scar is in the middle. I give him chances but not too much power.)
So my initial hatred for Tamala is not without precedent??? Idk.

i wanted to say thank you for your nice comment on my tamala gifset.. i was legit scared i'd get nothing but negative comments since the majority of fans seem to hate her
oh no problem! your set was beautiful!!
and yeah i get what you mean. i mean,, i guess i kind of understand the hate but some of it seems so,, weird too? like hassian is my favorite character my special little blorbo even, and tamala leading him on and breaking his heart like that sucks no doubt!! but also like,,, i support women's rights and women's wrongs!!! she's hot!!!!!
ajkdhg but seriously even beyond her being really attractive, i think she's also really interesting and i'm hoping that the devs have more planned for her! her using magic is SO interesting and i can't believe some people are ignoring that just because of what happened between her and hassian! i mean don't get me wrong, people are allowed to dislike characters, it's all fiction it's whatever yknow? but i also kind of thought people got past that whole "if a character is evil or morally not the best, that means you can't like them or you're fucked up" like,,, what happened to liking hot lady villains 🤨

I have so many thoughts about this. Also, uh ,spoilers?
yes!! Tish would definitely get down to some 80s disco and pop. Like the work she would crank out if only they had stereo systems. Living her best life. Eshe would probably slap the shop with a fine or something.
palia peeps *DO* have record players tho...and boy bands.
In the boy band corner we have Kenyatta, Nai'o and as much as he hates to admit it Auni.
Badruu is the O.G. before boy bands were a thing. I imagine him not only being into folk, country, and blues but also like barber shop quartet romantic type songs.
there's this really specific alt-indie rock music that i associate Jel with. like he'll hear an exceptionally dark verse and be like "yes, this is me to my core"
and whatever reth listens to is probably not what he really likes. like "kilima nature sound #6 for deep sleep" lol
I also have a very specific opinion about Hassians music choices. but instead let's talk about Sifuu and the absolute training montage music she listens to ("Gonna Fly Now", "Eye of the Tiger" and dare I say "Turn Down for What") and how she tries to share with Ashura who now avoids her whenever he works out.
Nobody cares about Caleri but Yael Naim's cover of Toxic by Britney Spears lol
There's no way Hodari wouldn't be into Dad Rock. He's a Bruce Springsteen Rolling Stones Bob Segar typa guy. Najuma pretends to hate it especially when her dad catches her humming those songs while working on explosives.
Zeki's theme should start with the opening riffs of Barracuda by Heart.
also there's a song called W.I.T.C.H. by Devon Cole that is literally Tamala. I feel like after like 200 yrs you get stuck in your ways tho and she would perpetually be listening to stuff in the Hall & Oates corner maybe some Fleetwood Mac for flavor.
Jina's into classical because she doesn't know anything else.
Elousia absolutely listens to everything looking for secret messages in the songs and figure them out and unfortunately no one would believe her. This is also a great time to tell yall she's listened to the entire Queen discography backwards three times.
Chayne is totally into Earth Wind & Fire. self explanatory.
and lastly, because, unfortunately, I could go on: Einar who has listened to everyone's music 3000 times over is diagnosed with Kraftwerk
okay, it's been fun. byee
Okay so I literally can’t stop listening to disco music recently and also have often been thinking of the people of Kilima whilst doing so because I was nerfed by god with a ✨special✨ brain
Anyway I was wondering what songs do you dear reader think characters would enjoy or that kinda represent them in your mind
Something in me is saying Tish would like Xanadu

Hi! I used to watch castle when I was younger but school got busy and the show got lame. Could you tell me What happened with the cancellation/Twitter thing?
Toward the end of S8 we found out that they fired Stana Katic and Tamala Jones but all of the men were still employed. They claim it was for budget cuts but Stana was the star of the show so I think the real reason came down to her asking for a wage equal to her male costar and the alleged drama on set between the actors. Stana carried that show on her back for eight years and then they just tossed her aside. Twitter found out about it and lost their minds. Everyone attacked the show and ABC so fast that they canceled the show like right away 😂😂😂😂😂
