New Pinned Post Time

Hey y’all figure it was time I did a brand new pinned post rather then just editing the old one repeatedly lol

Anyway! I’m Captain! Or Cap, or Cappy, or capula, or Cappybara, or whatever other nickname you could possibly extrapolate out of that (Most people default to Cap though). I’m (almost) 20 years old, I use they/them pronouns, and I’m nonbinary + bisexual! Also my favorite color is purple :3

I’ve been in and around fandom spaces for a over a decade at this point but haven’t really participated in any until recently! Currently my main fandom is Ninjago but I’ve been known to partake in like a bajillion other things.

I’ve got four different ninjago AU’s at the moment in various stages in development. My main AU is Wayward Son, which is the entire show rewritten based on the concept of “What if Lloyd was a baby in season 1?” My co-writer, @carmelo-san, and I have roughly planned out all the way to Dragons Rising season 1! I’ve got a few fics for it up on my ao3 and more on the way soon!

Editing Tips for Papers and Essays

When I was working on my English Associates, one of my professors gave us a list of steps to follow when we edited our papers. Some of these are things previous English teachers and professors had never mentioned in my classes. So I'm giving this to everyone because it makes a world of difference.

Take out all "you, we, me, etc." pronouns; if it isn't in third person, eliminate it.

Take out all "there"s that are followed by "to be" verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, became, become. This includes words that interrupt such as "there has been," "there may be," "there should have been," etc. Rewrite the sentence to get rid of the "there + to be" construction.

Take out "begin," "try," "start," and "wanted to" in any tense/form.

Take out "should," "would," and "could" wherever you are able to. Sometimes they are necessary, but they should be used as minimally as possible.

Eliminate empty words and phrases. Questions, exclamations ("well, now, so," etc), cliches ("we as a society, human beings," etc), or generalizations.

Eliminate all contractions.

Non of the above applies to quotes. Leave quotes as they are, or they're not quotes.

Cut down wordiness, don't over-stuff your sentences.

Fix any awkward sentences and ensure there is clarity. Sometimes people attempt to extend sentences to make their essays/papers longer. However, this can make your sentence clunky and/or unclear. Quality over quantity.

When you edit:

Edit multiple times and take breaks between edits.

On your first edit, read through it once and correct obvious errors. Then edit with the above steps.

Step away and edit once more, just reading through and fixing obvious errors.

Editing Methods:

Read it aloud

Read it backwards, aloud.

Put it in a larger font while you edit. Just make sure to return it to the proper font size (usually 12) when you're done.

Take your time to thoroughly edit your paper. Keep in mind that editing does more than keep you from losing points for spelling and grammar errors. It helps you write a stronger, higher quality paper. The more you become aware of these things, the better your academic writing gets.

I don’t mean to overstep and if I am feel free to ignore!! but on your coming out post I saw you said “though you don’t have to, I’d appreciate if you used he/him and not she/her” and it worried me a bit cuz I don’t want transphobic people using it to their advantage.

I’d say don’t give people the opportunity to use the wrong pronouns over the ones you want them to use. The quote “Though you don’t have to” in my eyes is a way for lazy(or transphobic) people to ignore your identity and keep using the thing you rather not be called because they don’t want to put effort in. I understand why you’d use it though cuz when changing your pronouns you don’t want to burden people with it( I didn’t want to burden people from my experience) And I’m definitely not saying it’s your fault for putting that phrase, because when I came out as trans I did the same thing. I’m saying people can take advantage of that particular phrase as an excuse to not try and use correct pronouns.

Everyone should refer to you with the correct pronouns because it’s your identity and you get to choose how people refer to you! If she/her makes you uncomfortable and you want to be called he/him, then you are he/him and everyone should refer to you as such, no questions asked! “I only use he/him and would appreciate you all refer to me as such :)” Same with if you want to be they/them, he/they, or even neopronouns. And if someone’s too lazy to call you by the correct pronoun they aren’t worth your time.

I don’t know if you are comfortable with people using she/her nowadays, but I guess I wanted to let you know it’s ok to hold people to a standard of calling you the correct pronouns without a fallback for those who don’t want to try, and you are allowed to get upset if people call you the wrong pronouns and call them out for it.

Again, sorry if this comes off as overstepping and feel free to ignore! I just don’t want you to feel afraid of setting pronoun boundaries, because you have the right to set them because it’s your identity and you get to choose how people refer to you. (And it’s not a burden on others to use the correct pronouns if you decide to set boundaries and only are comfortable with certain pronouns, because people who respect you will honor your identity, pronouns, and name etc.) /nm /gen /lh

BACKGROUND.

kinam got lucky. at least that’s what it felt like while he was growing up. he wasn’t necessarily rich nor excelling when it came to academics but he had a great set of features and that seemed to be enough for the rich and powerful to accept him as one of their own. and kinam, being as young and desperate for affirmation as he was, didn’t question it once. instead he soared under their protection, smiles growing a little more confident with words dripping in charm and deceit as he speaks.

turns out kinam was the biggest trickster of them all. he was a carefully edited version of himself when he was around his friends, one he knew would appeal to them more than the one that was hidden beneath the layers and layers of pretend. see, kinam positioned himself as a mysterious individual. he tried to play hard to get to mask his complete lack of interest in girls. it was boys that he was drawn to, that excited him, but that was not what was expected of him. it was not the role they wanted him to play.

he plays the part a little too well. his cold and distant behavior makes him even more desirable and girls flock to him like children at the zoo. they fight for his attention and kinam gives them just enough to keep the fantasy alive. still there is one person that sees through it all, someone who knows all the tells because he spent years perfecting them himself.

while kinam knows he should fear him and the power he now holds over him, he finds love instead. what had started as a quick adventure in the locker room after gym class bloomed into something more. it was a relationship that needed to stay hidden under all circumstances but kinam can’t say he minded. at least he got to experience his first times just like every other teenager his age.

it was s at age eighteen that kinam’s views on society were questioned in a rather unfortunate play of events. the senior class had rented a house out of the city to celebrate the nearing end of the school year. it had been planned with the purest intention, an opportunity for the seniors to make a few more memories together before they all had to part their ways, little did they know it would turn into a huge nightmare for some.

up until this day, kinam still doesn’t know who was responsible for the overdose. all he knew is that his name, as well as those of his friends, had conveniently disappeared off the list of those who had been present on that particular night. just like all of the other rich parents, kinam’s boyfriend’s parents had paid the police to erase their attendance by claiming they had taken off to another part of town. it was his first time experiencing how easily corrupted the officials are but kinam doesn’t dare complaining, knowing it would get both himself and the man he loved in huge trouble. so, he shuts his mouth instead but the guilt eats away at him on the inside. The newly found piece of truth does not sit with him well and it’s only a matter of time until the secrecy and the suffocating feeling of being indebted drives the pair apart.

be the change you want to see in the world, is the mindset kinam adopts himself as he applies to the police academy. he’s seen injustice and kinam has taken it upon himself to correct it.

it’s been a couple of years since kinam graduated the academy but the more he sees and learns the more he questions his own abilities to be a positive influence on the force. it is corrupted and bent, the temptation of just taking the money over doing hours of pointless administrative work growing with every passing day. guess the question is how long it will take until kinam gives in?

INTERVIEW.

1. what do you do for a living?? e.g. student, full time work, part time, etc.

“i am an officer of the law.”

2. how and where do you see yourself being in 5 years?? e.g. career wise, financially, relationship and connections wise.

“in five years, i’m hoping to finally be promoted to a detective. don’t get me wrong, being out on the streets is just as rewarding but it’s not why I joined the force. I like to believe I have something more to offer.” kinam hesitates whether or not he should answer the second part of the question as well, grown accustomed to keeping that part of his life private at all times. “a relationship would be nice as well but experience has taught me that police officers aren’t exactly favorable on the market.”

3. where do you fall on daegu’s societal hierarchy spectrum?? e.g. are you one of the upper class wealthy types or the lower class ‘underground’ type and how has this affected your attitude towards the hierarchy of the town??

“i have always fallen somewhere on the middle of the spectrum. i’m in no position to complain since i never had to struggle. my family has always been able to live comfortably but it was only after starting my job that i realized the kind of effects it had on the less fortunate.”

4. how do you feel about where you personally fit in the social hierarchy of the town and what are your intentions because of this?? e.g. do you aim to create a more equal, modern system for all citizens or are you quite happy with how the situation stands between the wealthy and the lesser off??

“something obviously needs to change but there is only so much I can do as an officer of the law. it’s my job to abide to the law and make sure the public does as well. Iitry to be as fair as i can be while on the job but my first priority will always be the public’s safety so when it comes to actual conflict there is little i can do but diffuse the situation.”

Notes for Lotus Lying

Spoilers for Esme’s background and the relevant portions of the fic.

The working title for this fic was “Drifter,” for her drifting through life and also to match Sleepwalker. I did want the final title to match, but I couldn’t come up with any that worked.

There’s one bit in this that I think I might’ve accidentally stolen from someone else, but the closest I can find is something from a movie called Chalet Girl that I definitely never watched and has a completely different context than the one I used (equestrian jumping, I think). But someone else might’ve quoted it in something that I read. So I don’t really know whether I came up with it on my own. What the hell is with the spelling in these names? I’ve misspelled Evansen at least two different ways. In fact, I bet I’ve misspelled it just now.

. . . I did misspell it just now. Twice. I originally typed “Evensen” and then corrected it to “Evansen,” but it’s actually “Evenson.” Argh.

As far as I know, there are no actual cliffs in Ashland (in fact, if I’m not mistaken, it’s actually rather coastal). But if Stephenie Meyer doesn’t have to explain how Esme found a cliff in Ashland, then neither do I. You can assume she traveled as far as necessary to get there. Maybe she did some form of hitchhiking.

I couldn’t figure out what the scent of morgues in the 20th century was like, so I made some assumptions and prayed they were accurate. Namely, that the morgue she was in was either connected to a hospital or used similar sanitation practices and that whatever science people use to avoid decay while conducting autopsies was not particularly good in the 1920s.

If you’re getting rapey overtones from the biting scene, then I’ve done it right. I originally meant it to reflect that Carlisle is eying her romantically while she’s dying instead of thinking about how to f*cking treat her, which is already all kinds of creepy, but I decided to ramp it up a little after remembering vampires can be a metaphor for sex, so it’s almost literally that kind of consent problems. It’s very much a violation of her trust and her faith both physically and mentally.

Notice how Carlisle doesn’t actually look at her when he talks, post-transformation? Yeah. The dick.

I, um, actually forgot about Edward until I was complaining about the name spellings again while proofreading. I mean, I’d already had ideas, I’d just forgotten to write it at all. That’s a reason why his section is so short.

The repetitive nature of some of the sections is meant to reflect how her thoughts keep straying back to certain topics to reflect her depression. I also thought it might work nicely structurally.

Her depression, in some ways, has totally trashed her empathy, I think. It’s made it difficult for her to think about anyone other than a select few topics and given her severe tunnel vision. So her few gestures towards other people are all coming from a very self-centered point of view, and she genuinely doesn’t understand that Rosalie’s case is different than hers. Honestly, I’m fairly certain that Esme is no longer entirely sane. Would you be completely sane after spending decades living with postpartum depression and a man who essentially kidnapped you?

I’m the least satisfied with the beginning of the college section.

According to my (really quick) research, college attendance rates went up after World War II due to college-educated people having made a huge difference in the war effort and US becoming afraid they were losing an international competitive edge, leading to provisions like the GI Bill and a general change in the attitude. I’m assuming that’s when college started getting hyped up. I don’t think she’d have thought of going to school on her own, so that’s why Esme waits so long to attend college.

I haven’t been able to find any information at all about how people used to look for courses. I believe they went to an office to actually register, but I don’t know how they found out about the courses. I’m assuming a literal catalogue.

For the record, I do not think photography majors and people with similar kinds of majors are stupid. That’s all Carlisle. I’m also aware that architecture involves a lot of fancy stuff and special licensing exams. Again, that’s aaaaaalll Carlisle. He thinks because it involves pictures, it’s stupid.

I’m also aware she probably did the degrees consecutively, not all at once. In this fic, Esme tried them all first in her first semester and then did them one at a time.

If you’re wondering if I meant what you think I meant when I said “leads her to bed”? Well. Um. Yes. I figured Carlisle would do that. Is there a fan nickname for how creepy he is? There should be.

The way I’m trying to write Esme is quintessentially a slightly batty lady who’s kind of pathetic. She’s so earnest about it in some ways, but she’s completely off because she’s so lost in her head.

I figured out while writing this that I think Carlisle’s ability is to make people ignore the creepy crap he does. It works differently based on the person. For Rosalie, it removes memories and blanks her out. For Esme, it increases the feeling of nostalgia. It is exactly as horrifying and filled with evil potential as you think it is.

This is shorter and less polished than I’d like it to be, but I’m having such a struggle with this fic that I need to just be able to say it’s done and not let it balloon any further. I might revisit it later.

There’s also an alternate ending, but it’s so similar to a chapter end of something else I read that I felt very uneasy using it. I think one line would’ve been word for word the same (except for a pronoun change), and one potentially plagiaristic bit is enough for me, thanks.

This fic had alternate titles like you wouldn’t believe. The current one has a double meaning and is also an allusion. I rather like it, but it’s still wrong in some ways. I encourage you to guess at it, if you like.

BACKGROUND.

dongmin’s from a family of famous writers, his parents owning one of the most famous publishing houses in seoul. dongmin never felt the pressure of growing up under such big figures as his parents, they were warm and welcoming – teaching his son to be the same.

they always told him to follow his own path and do things he wanted to do, not follow in his and live up to the family name. but that didn’t stop dongmin from pursuing something in the same field.

he went through school easy, becoming one of the top students in his class and eventually got into yonsei university for korean literature.

during his time in college, he filled notebook after notebook, ending up digitalizing them all and deciding to send his most recent one – a psychological thriller – into his parents’ publishing company. a week later, he got the call that they’d be publishing his work. he was only 21 at the time.

eventually, he graduated and his book ended up becoming a steady best seller, the readers demanding more and more. and he had already become an established young adult writer fresh out of college.

he was approached by many publishing houses and eventually picked gimm-young publishing and was hired on as a new editor. dongmin eventually stayed there for three years before deciding that the office life wasn’t for him and leaving the company.

he traveled to london to live and study literature more for a year before deciding to move back to korea – specifically daegu.

INTERVIEW.

1. what do you do for a living??

dongmin sipped at the cup of coffee that sat in front of him, offering a warm smile. “full time writer and editor, unofficially employed by my parents. i edit their manuscripts from time to time.” he leans back, arms crossed haphazardly across his chest. “it’s fun work, i guess. long and tiring, but i enjoy it.”

2. how and where do you see yourself being in 5 years??

“maybe opening a publishing company of my own, the rights to my books under my own name.” fingers card through locks of dark hair before landing back on the table and tapping a slow rhythm. “i’m pretty stable financially, so that’s nothing to worry about. not married, almost did that once,” dongmin’s expression turns blame for a split second. “found out that it’s not for me.”

3. where do you fall on daegu’s societal hierarchy spectrum??

“i guess you could class me as wealthy. i have a nice life, live comfortably, have enough to fall back on.” the writer thinks for a moment, lips sipping back at the cup of coffee. “i don’t like the idea of someone looking down on others just because they don’t have enough money or barely any at all. i donate a lot of my earnings to various charities when i can, not because it makes me feel good about myself but because why have all this money if i can’t do something good with it?”

4. how do you feel about where you personally fit in the social hierarchy of the town and what are your intentions because of this?? e.g. do you aim to create a more equal, modern system for all citizens or are you quite happy with how the situation stands between the wealthy and the lesser off??

eye twitches slightly at this question, urge to guard for some reason hits him like a truck – but he ignores it. “i don’t pay attention to it, or i try not to. if people only want to approach me or befriend me because of my name or my money, they should look elsewhere. i want to try to equalize the place as best i can in all the ways i’m able to, at least.”

5. what are your goals and aspirations for the future??

he laughs, finally finishing up the coffee and closing the notebook he’d forgotten he had open in front of him. “become a household name in terms of literature since people don’t read as much these days. i also aim to change that with either opening my own company or even just becoming a professor. literature can’t die because of technology – it’s something we need in our lives and i intend to make sure of that.”
