I love seeing wide open spaces that stretch on seemingly infinitely with no end in sight and I love learning about animals which are so giant that I would be as insignificant as a bug to them and I love thinking about stretches of space and time that exist on a scale larger than my mind could ever possibly comprehend. oh yeah i’ve got a bunch of loz aus that i haven’t really talked about. a few of them are listed and slightly explained in this poll and explanation reblog but i haven’t gone out of my way to actually list the aus i have and really explain them. so that’s what this post is for. here are some... decently simple explanations of my major aus and what they're generally about

i have two kinds of aus: original aus (loz aus that are set in their own kinds of worlds with their own stories and twists on character roles) and then crossover aus (we all know how this works i just mash loz and a thing i like together)

original aus: (many currently dont have actual titles, so the titles will often just be concept shorthand)

in the court of the crimson king/crimson king au: probably the most developed and closest to being written out. it's got one of the longer premises; set in a industrial-esque hyrule city, following linebeck as the main character, as the adoptive older brother of link and aryll, living with them and their grandmother as the only one able to reliably make money to pay for rent and food, leaving every other week to do jobs, but he moonlights as the 'demon of the gray moon', a masked persona he'd created as a child that had long since become a city-wide urban legend, anonymously taking unsavory jobs from whomever can contact him and offer pay, often working directly for bellum, a childhood friend, the one who enabled and trained him to become the demon, and one of five anonymous leaders of the city. linebeck effectively lives a double life, and tries to stay out of too much trouble to avoid drawing attention to himself or making his adoptive family worry, but he gets dragged into more and more danger as bellum becomes curious about the identities of the city's other leaders, and linebeck falls in love with a man named ganondorf, suspected to be one of those other city leaders. ive got a few posts related to it already: this one being another vague concept descriptor, this one being an actual scene i have written out.

'gimmick' au: i cannot explain the gimmick without spoiling the au. put simply, in this au, hyrule as a whole has been at war for ten years, every race and kingdom taking sides in a conflict that seems to be going nowhere. link joined the hylian army young, and has made his way up the ranks to become trusted by queen zelda herself, and things in the war take an interesting turn as he and zelda discover a new faction, unaligned with any particular kingdom and with unknown motives, and zelda decides to set out to the different parts of hyrule, link and a chosen group of trusted allies in tow, intending to try negotiation one more time before things take a turn for the worse.

sci-fi/space au: the fun one that probably would need to be done in a visual medium. it takes place in a solar system of a few planets, link growing up on the planet hyrule and occasionally traveling to the others as a knight specializing in investigating and taking down dangerous bounty hunters, working for zelda as a friend. he and zelda uncover a plot by the yiga clan to accumulate a number of highly dangerous research and weapons held by each species as they aim to resurrect a demon to wreck havoc on the solar system- the b plot being about the top bounty hunters in the solar system screwing around, eventually colliding with link and zelda's a plot as it begins to involve them.

murder mystery(?) au: one of the older ones, maybe one of the oldest that i still stick with. this might actually be one of the first ones i tried writing. the plot begins when zelda returns to hyrule city years after her father- the former mayor- was murdered, finding that he has been replaced by ganondorf and that while things seem fine enough on the surface, random and organized crime run the show, and she begins a private detective agency as 'sheik', a masked young man, and with the help of impa, and old friend and confidant, she moonlights as sheik and uses her daytime identity as zelda to help chip away at some of the city's biggest problems and finds herself drawn into a long string of murders that appear to be anything but random violence.

ruined hyrule 1: i have two au’s with the premise of hyrule being ruined. neither of them have more specific names yet. this one begins with the majority of greater hyrule's population having long since locked themselves in hyrule castle town in order to escape the increasingly dangerous wildlife. zelda, a young girl at the beginning, becomes curious about what lies beyond the city walls, and makes friends with many other children within this sheltered hyrule, and as they grow up together, aim to eventually venture out into the wilderness to see what may have caused the outside world to become so incredibly hostile.

ruined hyrule 2: the other ruined hyrule. set in a devastated hyrule, roughly ten years after the royal family was killed, link failing to save them or hyrule in the time since. he now resolves to set out and indiscriminately destroy every demon that plagues the ruined hyrule, meeting and bringing along various allies, each of which has been uniquely affected by and have different lived in this altered, dangerous shell of hyrule.

modern (school): i also have two modern aus. this one isn’t plot driven, just a concept i have, would work best as little vignettes or something. essentially just the idea of a group of loz characters hanging out together in a modern high school (or college?) setting.

modern: this is the one with an actual plot. follows the general idea of zelda characters living in a modern world only for the typical legends to begin resurfacing and heralding dark events. plot specifics are murky, but that's the general idea.

dark mage: this is the au that where the seas meet the sands takes place in. basically just ganondorf x linebeck shenanigans in this alternate hyrule while actual plot sneaks up on them. named 'dark mage' mostly because the initial idea behind this au was that linebeck would learn magic.

horror au: doesn't have the best name, and it's ended up just being a personal sandbox for me. constantly changing, with the cast and setting often altering if i find that something isn't working or sticking. it's an au i've considered (and even briefly tried) writing in the past, but it's still too fluid, and writing horror effectively is difficult. it's a fun au, though.

mecha au: spawned because i watched neon genesis evangelion. a lot of this au's basic concepts can be found here: x but the short version is that hyrule is being besiged by massive monsters, but each race has created their own mechs to combat them. link is just a farmer who happens to have a strange knack for being a mech user, so is brought in by zelda as a gamble to bolster their chances, and he is tasked with working with a new and less-than-trustworthy crew to help fight those monsters.

'amnesia link' au: an au that sprang up in about a day and hasn't gotten too far since. basic premise being that three years prior to the story, link and a group of allies has faced off against ganondorf and, despite their best efforts, lost, with link being presumed dead by their enemies. now, link has woken up from his coma, his memories gone and hyrule taken over, and, with guidance, must once again travel across hyrule, aiming to rediscover his allies and try to face ganondorf once more.

A quick list of crossovers: I won't explain these in length, since they can range from having their own plot to just being a fun mental concept. So, the things I have made crossover aus with are:

So new deltarune chapters came out.

And they change fucking everything

If you havent noticed by the tags, spoilers for deltarune chapter 3 and 4 are ahead, especially spoilers for the final boss and secret boss of chapter 3

I've been thinking about deltarune chapter 3's secret boss more than anything, there is so much to the roaring knight's inclusion and just what they are doing that we really dont know anything.

Like, I've seen there's some dialogue that *could* imply that the knight is working with Kris, and it really would make a lot of sense, but in a game like deltarune, you really have no clue. My initial theory, when first playing chapters 3 and 4, was that maybe the reason Kris made the dark world in their house was to lure the roaring knight over to get the shadow crystal... but the idea that Kris is working with the knight makes it much less likely. Another theory is that maybe Kris wanted to work with the knight to kidnap undyne and take her to the bunker, maybe the reason they slashed the car tires was to get undyne to come? And maybe they might also be taking other characters that have disappeared for a while to the bunker too, like maybe papyrus or onionsan? (Actually, how would they even get onionsan in there?)

Now more than just why the knight is there, just who even is the knight?

The easy answer is probably dess, I've seen a bunch of pieces of evidence, and most of them are small, but I think the use of leitmotifs definitely makes the theory make a lot of sense. I've seen quite a few people say Carol, and it also would make some sense, but feels like it could be just too obvious. Ive also seen people say its gaster and like. I guess its possible. I just think it would be less interesting to not be a character that we really know. Ive also seen people say that the knight kinda has a skeleton like structure, which leads me to also think it could be sans or papyrus. The issue with that is that I just really dont think it would be in character for them. So far the most likely option I'd say is dess, although I do hope we dont already know who it is, I'd like it being a suprise.

Now, despite the fact I dont really think Sans is the knight, I absolutely believe that they have a big connection. And im not even just talking about deltarune sans, but actually specifically sans in undertale. At this point, it's decently likely that they are one in the same. How they are is a mystery, but I think that there is too much evidence, off the top of my head, I remember the tracks "its raining somewhere else" from undertale, when talking to sans in the restaurant, likely being connected to one of the tracks from the new chapters, "the place where it rained." Oddly, this seems like it maybe implies that the games are actually taking place at the same time, I mean , "ITS" raining? That is present tense, although I really have no idea if it's supposed to be anything more than just confirmation that the games universe's are connected. There's a good that it is just not saying that they take place at the same time.

Knowing that the games are connected is what really leads me to believe Sans is connected to the knight. And that belief mostly actually comes from sans and the knight's fights themselves. If you look at the fights, there are a lot of similarities between them, especially in the attacks that have you go up and down through the waves of obstacles, or the gaster blasters working just like how the knight's swords do. I wouldn't say the connection is entirely likely, solely because I feel like maybe there would be some sort of connection in the music of the boss like there was with gerson and undyne's fight music, but that also could be because toby doesn't want people to think that sans IS the knight. It could be purely coincidental, though.

I'm so excited to see where the game goes next. Also, I haven't done chapter 4's snowgrave yet, so I am absolutely missing some information

7. eye. ooh this one is a toughie. obviously everybody else will see u as a prick forever (beholding is obnoxious by nature) but at the same time..... knowledge ???? yummy ?? however you will be absolutely insatiable and lose all your friends and become a monster addicted to sucking people's stories out of their souls and invading their dreams. so. there's that. the series has explored a lot of what it's like to be an eye avatar and i think in general it's not worth it. sure, you can win the occasional pub trivia, but in the long run knowing everything sort of removes the joy and meaning from life. jon was so depressed by the end and i feel like we don't talk about that enough.

6. slaughter. prepare to win a million dollars by becoming a boxing champion.

5. hunt. k i have lots of thoughts on this one. most prey cant run as long as you can like dont you get bored???? but u get to be hot and deadly so thats a plus. also i bet youd be really good at first-person shooters and laser tag or hide and seek. and finding lost objects. all in all a solid pastime, although you do have to hunt on a consistent basis to sustain yourself and thats probably a pain to do without getting noticed. 70/30 pros and cons

4. dark. hear me out on this one ok i feel like it would come with a huuuuge advantage in combat like u can probably literally blind your opponent and summon made-up child's monsters (fnaf?) to attack for you. also black goes well with anything. nat 20s every time youre a rogue. think about it

my hot take is people who fall too black and white on the discourse of ethics in fan fiction or queer media actually just aren't active readers

or like have no honest sense of what's read, how often, the politics of editing (watch American Fiction (2023)!!!!!!!), or like what the general discourse is between writers, distributors, or types of readers. like they dont read, they just parrot talking points in discourse they want to be associated with.

imo "proshipper" , "antishipper", "problematic ship" kinda sucks for effective communication. It sounds like you dislike people who engage in the act of shipping (an already established discourse) and it just makes the thing you're mad about harder to address. im begging you to say racism. say pedophilia. say abuse is romantized because like no "ship" exists with one unified interpretation. like that is just not how that word works. you can like just say fuck a ship but like using the characters of a ship as shorthand for the bad thing just is ineffective communication. I feel like shit that is dark porn should be labeled as such kept in dead dove spaces because everyone should be able to utilize common sense about mainstream spaces. instead people dont even know if the thing they are writing off in the ship is implied, canon, just common in the space because to learn that you'd need to go to the ship tag.

You see my point like I dont think anyone who does this is silly, I think it was worth a try and ppl can curate their spaces however they want I just think its okay to say hmm this doesnt work. The obstacle is the way, that's never gonna let you down. I think people dont give themselves enough power to change the things they need to change in their creative space. Like people used to invent new types of ship names and styles to implicate all sorts of things. Make up a smart one that always implies siblings or whatever, so you can never be misunderstood. "sibship" or a way of blending names you think communicates an idea. I think the citrus scale is still useful for telling people tone, not just rating.

I think there is a smarter way for all the good and reasonable people who just want to feel safe online to establish their boundaries than by using show and character names as labels. I dont see any downsides to always naming the evil thing by its name because calling something racist should demand its response is more serious than just the right to a positive fandom experience. racism, and other serious social ills should not be hidden behind fandom words they should speak over them. imo.

anyway I could pick up a book from any romance section, mystery section, thriller section, or so on and find two characters that end up together despite the stalking and the eye fucking and that time he gas lite her mom for years and turned out to be her dad. idk I have eaten through so many writers who have like 18 books of just balls to the walls motifs over and over again. some of us commute on the bus ya know.

hey did you know that in the real novels, there are four, for the Hannibal Lecture series that Clarice Starling and Hannibal end up together. That's the real ending the movies always change. Everything else is the same, he kills and munches his way right into her heart. He fucks her by the fireplace while a memory of her dad says its totally cool and then they get plastic surgery and move to Europe. have a good day.

Heart by fawn_writes || rated T || 1/1 || 663 words - man its so good. short and sweet. jake comes by to witness the construction of hals new body while also reminiscing about the times he fought brobot and his untimely demise. a good sparkling of body worship. "Everything will be normal. They’ll manage to keep it normal. After all, Jake has enough of his own heart to share." - fuck, that lines so effervescent.

What he needs by fawn_writes || rated M || 1/1 || 1259 words - another banger from the same author. they be doing the horizontal tango, but nothings too graphic. healthy serving of body worship from jakes perspective, as well as his internal struggle with his apparent robotic attraction.

Dead Weight by squirtgunplay || rated M || 5/9 || 27337 words - oh that fic. oh my god. love me some zombie apocalypse au with existential horror sprinkled on top. hal and dirk are twins but with a twist in this one. theres mystery. theres injuries that make you incapable of moving around. theres ship of theseus discussion. its nourishing. its beautiful. jake and hals banter in this one is fucking amazing, and the author captures their characters so well. the relationship between hal and dirk is also very fucking good and heartwrenching and just ugh. stellar writing, the forth wall break made me laugh out loud, hal gets called a security camera (derogatory). theres graphic depictions of violence, so beware of the tags.

Tennessee Whiskey & You by MistLaFey || rated T || 5/? || 12217 words - major character death and graphic depictions of violence tagged, so beware and read the tags. no-sburb au. dirk fucking dies (its in the fic description so i dont feel like its a spoiler). beautiful exploration of grief, unhealthy coping mechanisms and trying to get back into the normal life when theres a big part of it suddenly missing. hal and dirk are twins. jake is not doing well. hal is also not doing well, but pretending he is. its heartbreaking and some scenes made my chest hurt. very good fic and i dont understand why it doesnt get more love. it deserves it. go read it, even just for the funeral scene, i got teary-eyed over it.

seconds by squirtgunplay || rated E || 2/2 || 18698 words - graphic depictions of violence and its no joke, presidential alert the girls are fightinnn!! but its also so funny and the authors so funny and its also really hot! no sburb au, hals a human and dirks twin. he gets kidnapped by a craigslist hitman jake who mistakes him for dirk. the banter is top game in this one. hal cant keep his mouth shut even in life or death situation. jakes a dork, but hes a deadly dork, and also cant keep his mouth shut about his personal problems. theres fistfighting and knifethrowing and hal gets a weapon put to his head at least twice and he thinks its pretty damn hot. theres banging in second chapter. what more can i say to sell you on this one. the characters are on point, the action is tense but its also written in a cheeky, fun way, smut is good, a npc gets unsubscribed from life. amazing fic, 10/10, will read it again.

I Think Therefore I AR by Taxi_Boy || rated T || 25/? || 30417 words - im saving the best for last. major character death. hal has to start the game and get his friends into the medium while dirk is missing, while also pretending to be dirk as to not raise their suspicions. im not going to say anymore about the plot, you just have to go and read the fic. genuinely my favourite jakehal - and homestuck in general - fic of all time. i love caliborn in this one. i cant wait to see what the author has cooked up for us in the future. its plainly genious.

hi my friend recommended me the incandescence of a dying light and i hope you know its absolutely one of my number one reads of all time, over many novels.

the pure desperation that grian has throughout all of the chapters, never ending since mumbo went missing and in spite of all logic— its contagious. i knew from the beginning the type of story this was, i could tell it wouldnt have a happy ending (i skimmed the tags and missed the one about it not ending happy). but even still. i hoped. it couldnt all be for nothing, it couldnt have been a simple slip up, maybe he really is alive, it could happen.

and it still ended exactly how i knew it would and it still hit so so hard. literally cried.

i think the fact its fanfiction and not an work with entirely original characters actually serves it better. the reader knows mumbo, knows his quirks his voice and has a clear image of him. i find that whenever ive seen stories where a character haunts the narrative and its got original characters, im not as sad over it because i dont know them.

having a clear image of mumbo and then reading the description of his corpse was so grim in the best way. its familiarity. “i know him, he cant be dead. he was supposed to be alive, we got this far, why is he still dead?” it really put me in grians shoes more than i think a story with original characters could.

you’re writing style is incredible and your dedication to research was inspiring and the descriptions you gave for the forest was absolutely stunning. i genuinely cannot put into words how much i loved it. i felt actual grief with grian and the skill you need to invoke those emotions in your readers is immense and you went beyond.

sorry this is so long. i also write and i could only dream of writing something that incredible. incandescence left me aching with grief in a way that i have not really felt over media in a long long time. thank you and i will be checking out your other fics, just as soon as i recover from this one 😭💚

What you said about knowing how it was probably going to end, but hoping anyway since Grian's feelings were contagious--that's one of the most common things I hear in reviews. And I love that! Because that is exactly what I hoped to do with the story, but at the beginning I had no idea if I could pull it off. I was really afraid for so many months that the story wasn't going to land, and so every time I hear people tell me this it tells me that it worked. The story is a mystery that's not much of a mystery at all, and it's a plot that has an obvious conclusion from the beginning. So I was really worried about making sure that an obvious ending wouldn't mean it was anti-climatic, while engaging readers deeply enough that they'd ignore the obvious :)

I also really like your analysis of why this works as a fanfiction instead of an original work. I think you're completely right. If I were to write something similar as an original work, I would have to use a lot more narrative time in the front end making Mumbo into a character people cared about. As it is, he's only in the story for the first 900 ish words out of a 97,000 word fic. From every point past then, he's "off-screen." I don't have to make you care for Mumbo, since you already do by virtue of seeking out fanfiction with him in it. I don't have to convince you of Grian and Mumbo's friendship and how important they are to each other; you'll already know that as a reader. It also helps underscore other parts of Grian's character, since you might notice that he kind of puts Mumbo on a pedestal in his absence. He believes in Mumbo so hard that he'll refuse to accept any suggestion that Mumbo might have made a mistake. But we all know Mumbo and we know he's just as human as anyone else. This being a fanfic means I have time to dig into everything else in the story and not have to worry about making you care about the missing character, and not having to convince you of his relationship to Grian.

update on the squish and kadents thing again

what was suggested to me (by A-xesey on the spore discord) for importing crt files is literally making a .package file that has a copy of the default creature editor that replaces the default editor bodies with whatever crt files i wanna see. so.

so behold the first ever mod ive made for the game, AND the first ever mod ive applied onto the game. which consists entirely of this

this randomizes the colors, but theyre easy to recreate going off of the crt files alone and i HAVE done that so its easy to get around

OK SO FIRST OF ALL KADENTS

its actually nothing much like its cousin Trosqi, which was also named Kadents in AssembledContent. trurns out it was a weird lanky humanoid guy!

now the other one is Squish. which is. as i expected. basically just battered feesh. but for some reason the game wont let me save it

i did anyway with cheat engine and it didnt show in the sporepedia at all, but it DID save its png for what its worth, so you can put it into adventures like harvest vehicles (and then itll reset if you ctrl+z even once)

i cant drag and drop it into test drive though, or even the creature editor

heres the actual battered feesh

the only apparent difference i can see on Squish is the addition of a Porcupain on the back, and different graspers, and the limb tips are slightly different sizes

im really not sure what is so wrong with Squish that it wont even show in the sporepedia. but thankfully i added a gaprop tag just in case, its not going to pollinate and screw up in the entire game

heres the beautiful collection. finallly... the mystery of squish and kadents finally solved, from finding them mentioned in locale files 8 months ago and knowing nothing else (remember i assumed they were plants!!!) to finally seeing them in the flesh

and here are the pngs, assuming tumblr doesnt compress them. i dont know how well the squish png is going to work though, but drag and drop works into adventures specifically

also curiously the earlier Battlefish matches the final battered feesh in both graspers and the lack of a porcupain

suggesting squish was edited FROM battered feesh late in development, with very minor changes, and then they just saved it for some reason and nearly included it in the final game

Stanislav or Stas, our Heavy. I havent spoke with 'im much. He aint much of a talker. Though I've heard of a certain someone here who might like him.

Archie, the Sniper. Not much to say about him.

John, the Scout. Hes like a rat sometimes, and has a superiority complex worse than our doc to boot, but hes a good kid.

Terry, our Soldier. Likes planes, surprisingly. He also likes gambling. We've banned 'im from poker night though because hes a sore loser.

Demobot, more of a mystery than Firebug. Though I usually keep him in fightin' form. Hes a robot afterall. Though I swear we were meant to be gettin' a human. Ah well, Demo is a good'n, even though he scares me sometimes.

Rafel, our Medic. Hes crazy, obsessed with some Francis guy, and is the one guy you should avoid talking casually about birds to unless you want an hour long mininum infodump about whatever bird you point out to him. Same goes for him talking about said Francis guy. Or do, it might mean he doesnt kidnap one of us so he can ramble as much as he wants again.

Remus sometimes goes to house parties where he doesn't know anybody just to get drunk with somebody else’s money. He makes polite conversations, bc he likes to be liked, and it boosts his self esteem. Plus, its easier to talk to random people he doesnt know - no strings attached and all that. 

At the entrance he sees a table with different colored cups. He doesnt know which to pick - he doesn't want people to judge him based on his sexual preferences and to be perceived a certain way - especially since he didn't come here to get laid. A man (he later learns his name is Sirius) appears at his side and they strike a conversation - Remus tells him about his house party thing and that he doesn't even know the host. After they finish talking Remus picks the most neutral option and off he goes. 

Throughout the night Remus sees Sirius going around the party and striking conversations here and there. At some point Sirius finds Remus in the kitchen. Remus suggests ditching a party but Sirius looks back at the guests and says he isn't keen on the idea - Remus assumes he is involved with the guy (James) he saw him talking to earlier. 

In the early morning people start clearing out - Remus walks in on Sirius politely kicking out Fabian and Gideon and starts to realise that Sirius might be the host, so he panics bc of all the things he told him earlier. (He needn’t to, Sirius ask him out on a date ⬇️)

DULL SPORT-one

—there is now a tag called #Dull sport — A muffled Melody reaches into my sleep, dragging me out like a fishing pole beckoning me to the surface of the water. As i return to the surface, the music becomes clearer and light penetrates my eyelids.

Where have i heard this song before? I become irritated as i struggle to place the melody. Suddenly i realize i can open my eyes, and when i do it seems too easy.

I dont bother to adjust to the morning light before i launch towards my “nightstand,” grasping my banged up phone out of the pail of rice only to push snooze instead of dismiss. 

Sigh. Not off to a good start this morning. But, hey! My phone actually dried out! Its holding on by a thread, and im waiting until i fully breaks until asking Donatello to fix it. Until then, i will squint to see the display since it is permanently dimmed.

Its 10am. The last day of school was yesterday, and i should be happy except that im royally cooked when my mom sees my report card. In the last term my grades have dropped diabolically since i was begrudgingly accepted into the turtle’s crew. 

The thought of the turtles cheer me right up, though, and i move on to getting ready for the day.

Im staying with my mom right now, since its still the week, and she’s definitely going to want help cleaning today, since i have nothing else to do. I thought about using this sweet freedom before she sees my report card to hang out with my green friends-however, i want to help her out. Its the least i can do.

This is what i think about as i stare at my ceiling in morning-induced misery. 

I look around my room to see what needs to be picked up. Not that i will clean it anyways.

The ancient family heirloom wardrobe that Angel owned before moving out is wide open- every drawer, every cabinet. So i roll out of bed, avoiding obstacles on the ground, and walk towards said wardrobe.

After rearranging the knickknacks on my desk and kicking all my dirty clothes into a corner, im left staring at the pail of rice i probably just wasted with my hands on my hips mulling over what to do with it.

If i werent so stubborn as to not simply take Donnie up on his excessive offers to fix or even make me a new phone, i could have eaten this rice for dinner tonight-wait, i can just wash it and make it now! Then, ill have made breakfast for myself and mom and maybe she’ll go a little easier on me when the report card comes in…

So i stay in my favorite black wife-beater(?) and skull pajama pants while i boil two cups of water. Yes that was an excuse to do a fit check.

I stare at the photo of my mom’s dad’s mom that ive never heard about and think about where i came from for about the millionth time this week. Donnie and i were having one of our weirdly deep discussions the other day about not fitting in, and i confessed that being mixed has always made me feel like the odd one out in every room-especially because i never became fluent in Spanish.

The water begins to boil as i examine the back of my hand. I wonder if ill tan this summer…

I pour the rice into the boiling pot, stir in a dash of olive oil and a pinch of salt, lower the heat and cover the pot with a ceramic plate. I hear my moms door creak open as i turn unlock my phone for the first time this morning.

“Casey, why are you always on that dang phone?” She grumbles, beelining toward the drawer with the instant coffee.

I know better than to argue. “Yeah.” I reply, squinting to see my notifications. Theres one from Donnie, last night. u get home alr? Even if my phone wasnt soaked in mysterious NYC puddle water, i probably still wouldnt have seen it-i was exhausted. 

Noting my moms presence, i neglected to reply to the message, knowing he wouldnt see it until the evening anyways. Being friends with the turtles was like being on a different timezone than them, since they chose to sleep typically in the daytime. A part of me wonders how long Don stayed up for my reply, though.

“Okay, CJ. Youre helping me clean those offices today, then we’re cleaning the house, then youre cleaning your room.” She proclaims, stirring her drink in its mug.

“Sounds rad,” i sigh as i remove our breakfast from the heat.
