Maybe they're someone who used to be super depressed and never believed in therapy to help, but they ended up going there because people told them to.

But instead of the normal plot line where the cult changed them they're putting up a front, trying to keep themselves safe while working in the cult. They're still depressed as hell, but no one really knows
