Crazily my most listened to artist this year is The Rolling Stones just because I plowed through their ENTIRE discography some months ago only to discover that I still only really like Let it Bleed and the hits (Goats Head Soup is kinda cool...but I don't think they're good at albums).

I agree! Here are the solutions I've been using.

Move away from Apple. Android phones and tablets have SD card slots, and storage is cheap.

Get your music in mp3 form, put it on an SD card, slot it into your phone and you'll never stop rocking in the subway. Or on a trip away from urban zones.

Don't rely on streaming services. Buy your own movies, make a copy, pirate the files, whatever, then put them on that same SD card, and you can watch stuff whenever you want.

You can download offline maps, and the GPS still works (because it's a different signal than mobile internet). There are dedicated apps for that. You'll need to plan ahead, because dowloading a hi-res map could take a few minutes even with the best wifi, but it works! It's how I stopped my phone bill from exploding with roaming charges when I went to London.

You are not alone in deploring the always-online turn, and others have found/made workarounds that you can use too. It's possible to take it back, and it's not that complicated.

smartphone storage plateauing in favor of just storing everything in the cloud is such dogshit. i should be able to have like a fucking terabyte of data on my phone at this point. i hate the fucking cloud

hey do you always make them spotify links instead of native embedded audio? Id like to listen to some of these new bands but not if it's gonna mess up my algorithm yk. would be much more willing to give them a shot here first but if it's more work for you, completely understandable

I've thought about uploading the songs directly but 1. that would be prohibitively slow (my upload speed isn't very good) 2. tumblr's audio copyright system would block a ton of 'em. Sorry!
