The Star: When has your character been most hopeful?

When he started studying at the Conservatory. Ahlysaaria home-schooled Tarlyn and expected excellence from him at all times, so when he began studying with other people and his genius stood out amongst his peers, that was exhilarating. It made him hopeful that he was indeed everything his mother had told him he was, and capable of achieving great deeds as she expected of him. And it was true. The only problem was that very little of it was what he wanted to be or achieve.

The other time he was most hopeful, and this time truly hopeful for something he wanted, was when they were Consecuted, and the Luxon offered them a way to run away and start over.

The Hierophant in Reverse: When has your character’s personal beliefs been challenged?

Quite a few times! One time Oak's personal belief was challenged was when they had a big fight with their sister Kat, who is far more ambitious and incorporated into Kryn culture than them, and they had to reconsider what it means to be a goblin, to be a member of clan Zelek (Zetek? I don't remember the right spelling oops), and to be true to their culture. They were being rigid and protective against Kryn influence, of course (And it is going to be so fucking funny if they come home with a drow boyfriend. Kat's going to roast them sm for it after all the bullshit she had to hear from them for befriending drow and making her jewelry in Kryn style.)

Espen and Fyrna also challenged their personal beliefs because up until the campaign, Oak's encounters with den Icozrin plus their subconscious bias (even before the actual memories of their life as tarlyn) made them really wary and suspicious of Kryn nobles. They were really cynical about them as a whole, considering them all self-serving at the end of the day, and the entire Dynasty as more broken than well-meaning. But Espen and Fryna and Shanfel and Verin are (and were) not like that, so even if they have remembered all of these horrors that were allowed and carried out by their government, even if they still think it's very broken, they realize that belief in those few who are trying, and courage enough to try to make change themself, will serve them (and the dynasty) much more than giving up on the system. That's not doable anyway. So this is what they have to do -- learn from those nobles who have shown them that it is possible to use their privilege well, and make the changes they want to see!

But I do like Arcturus, and don't want to delete him from the story completely. So I have a new role for him. He can be the 'eyes on the ground', so to speak (is that even something people say?), experiencing the Shadow Kingdom's anarchy right from the capital city. He can be some sort of vessel to put forth ideas of democracy in the narrative, to compete with everyone else's focus on monarchy. (I'm not against writing a story purely about a monarchic succession power struggle, but I've got my British king-hating mitts all over this story, so it seems natural that I should offer some kind of resolution to the Shadow Kingdom. the Royal family is also kind of spent, as neither Koloko, Ruthrhex or Yka will accept the position or continue the dynasty - Yka isn't even recognized as a member of the family, and Ruthrhex is a forbidden bastard conceived with a member of the clergy - and people are tired. I think people in this position would, when faced with the opportunity to build something new that is fairer than before, would take it. I hope. I've got to hope.)

imo, it feels more likely that he set up the shiv thing so the scourger would have an excuse to be killed so one, they couldn't give up as much information, and two, because judging by her words, she WANTED to die early (her talking about being impatient or whatever)

I don't think that's the case. The Nein first learned of the Scourger and immediately went to see her unescorted without any objection by Essek in the Bright Queen's throne room. That happened just as the Bright Queen refused to grant Caleb's request for more training from Essek, noting they had not earned that sort of trust yet. The issue of her court's faith in the Nein was front and center in the discussion, but there wasn't even a peep of dissent when they chose to see the Scourger alone. Essek didn't even offer to escort them.

I think that if Essek had intended to cut off any attempts to get any information from the Scourger, he would have done it from the start. No one would question the argument that such a high value prisoner could be compromised by allowing Empire denizens near hear. Essek could have also brought up something like protocol or that it would interfere with his strategy to get information from her. Regardless of the exact argument, he certainly would have been able to present convincing, valid, and sensible reasons not to let the Nein speak to the Scourger at all. Considering his position, that this discussion happened at court, and that the Nein had other matters to attend to anyway, I don't imagine such an act would have come off as suspicious.

The fact that Essek didn't even try that leads me to conclude that he was not worried about what the Scourger would say to the Nein about anything she knew up to that point (Episode 63). There's no reason to expect that the Scourger learned anything compromising from that point to Episode 77--except whomever may have helped her get out of the chains and perhaps gave her the shiv. But then it would be circular to set the Scourger up to get killed by giving her a shiv because she knew who gave her the shiv. That said, once she had it, Essek would have had a very real justification for personally finishing her off after restraining her in such a way that she couldn't speak. The last thing he needed was her outing him or whomever helped her on his behalf as a final "fuck you" to the Dynasty.

The conundrum for the Scourger is that the only way anyone would believe that someone in the Dynasty had given her a shiv is if she outed that she had a shiv, which of course would result in her no longer having a shiv. Remember, she's loyal to Trent Ikithon and hates the Dynasty. Why would she peacefully help the Dynasty realize there's a traitor in their midst willing to facilitate violence within its own capital? Nah, she now had an opportunity to hurt the Kryn, directly against a member or indirectly against the Nein, and it was then a question of whom to target among the few that would come to see her.

I don't doubt that the Scourger had at least accepted the real possibility of suicide by that point. There was no way she could have reasonably expected escaping her situation after so long in the prison, no spellbook, no allies, and no way of knowing how to get out. With the shiv already in hand, she could have simply killed herself before anyone arrived. The right cut and she'd have bled out before any of the guards noticed. She just wanted to get Caleb on the way out.

And Essek recognized all this was the most likely result. It all worked fine as long as she died before using any lingering credibility against him, and that's how it went. Though, to be fair, even if she had said anything, it's a hateful prisoner's word against the Shadowhand. It'd be like someone on death row accusing the prison warden of giving them a shiv. Possible, but incredibly unlikely.

The players didn't even insight check Essek at any point during or after that encounter. They were fooled, too.

Daemon AU Posting

I got this idea from @thecryptidgrey who made a post about BG3 Daemons. I'm a big fan of Daemons as a concept and I could not stop thinking about it. So here's my Tavs and their daemons! (Def borrowing some ideas from the OG thread which you can check out here)

Info under the cut! Warning for some spoilers for BG3 including Dark Urge spoilers.

Raerlyn: I think Raerlyn's Daemon is a Unicorn! Her name does mean Unicorn in Elvish after all.* Additionally, I think symbolism of it fits her. It's a noble creature, mysterious and magical. I like to imagine her riding around on its back doing kickass paladin things. I also think because there's that strong connection with nature that works with the Elvish background. Her story also really heavily revolves around the preservation of her family's history and the cleansing of evil, which I think works well for a daemon. (Also imagine her giving her girlfriend a ride on her unicorn daemon. It would be CUTE!!!)

Mona: Mona's daemon was unsettled before she ended up meeting her patron. She's an Archfey Warlock, and when she was like, 10, she wandered into the woods after being locked out by her family and got snatched by the fey. So her daemon got a little fucked up by her fae patron. She has a Barn Swallow, with really beautiful feathers, small and resilient just like her. Only hers is covered in nightcap mushrooms. It's a scary sight, but much like her, despite the sinister and gloomy appearance, she's a softie at heart.

Karella: Karella's daemon is a black swan. I think it suits her- she feels a little outcasted herself, being a half-drow. She's very distant from her peers, but there's something intriguing about her. Mysterious, rare, and hauntingly beautiful. Also swans mate for life and she is so so in love with her wife Mona which I think is sweet.

Heir: A lot of people assert that Tieflings don't have Daemons, which I think would add to some of the historical prejudices against them. So I like that as a concept! But I do have an idea of my own to expand upon that point. They do have souls obviously- but much like the polar bears in HDM, they're stored elsewhere. In the horns! A Tiefling's horns are extensions of themselves and breaking/losing them is physically and mentally destructive. (Karlach fans get some angst there to play with >:]). Heir's horns aren't his soul however because he's not a Tiefling- he's a Bhaalspawn. I imagine Bhaal never gave him the other half of his soul, so he feels a little incomplete, like he's missing something.

Dynasty: As a Tiefling, Dynasty's soul is in his horns. I'm still workshopping the symbolism for horns, but I believe his smaller, more turned in horns probably relates somewhat to his sneakier tendencies. This man is a rogue after all. I like to think he spends a good amount of time caring for his horns and also fusses over the other horned party members to take better care of theirs.

Pysansha: I think his daemon would be an otter! They're often associated with playfulness and curiosity, which i think suits him. He spends all his time exploring the world around him and he loves to learn. But just like an otter, he's not afraid to fight back if needed. I also think he likes to wildshape into an otter to match his daemon. They'd be so cute.

Lucky: They absolutely have a deer for a daemon. Quiet and fast just like them, but incredibly gentle. Also I think its funny because the deer is a good foot taller than them. Halfling problems. (When the others have a bad day their daemon will run right up to them and drop random plants in their lap. This is how Lucky communicates.)

Mara: Mara definitely has a ox daemon. Strong and stubborn, but also exceedingly loyal. She might find it hard to change her mind sometimes, but when she cares for someone she'll do everything in her power to protect them. Also I think she would love to paint her daemon's horns and decorate them with jewelry and stuff. Plus I find the idea of her as a monk with a bigass tanky daemon a bit amusing.

Rywan: He has a boar daemon! She's surprisingly cute looking for a boar, with big old eyes and really soft hair. She will still maim you though. I think it fits Rywan as a barbarian- boars are strong, but wild and untamed. Stubborn too, which is kind of Rywan's whole thing. They also have very specific mythological symbolism, which if you can guess will probably reveal why his daddy issues are so terrible. The boar also 100% carries smaller daemons around when they get tired. They're cute like that.

Clahalvanna (Vanna for short): He does not have a daemon! This is for reasons he refuses to explain to the others. He is weirdly attached to that seashell necklace of his though. Strange.

kalen I'm making a dick grayson playlist what songs remind you of dick because my music knowledge is uhhhh zero

OMG literally too many there are so many. But I get asked this often enough that okay this is me finally sucking it up and ACTUALLY going through my long-as-fuck character playlist for whenever I write Dick Grayson fic stuff.

So here, in alphabetical order.....some are more 'him' than others, and I tend to have multiple songs from the same artist for character playlists because not surprisingly artists tend towards certain personal themes that recur in their work and so when an artist has a theme I feel is Dick Grayson-esque, I end up putting a bunch of their stuff on.

Also some of these songs are about romantic relationships and that's the vibe I have them on here for, like Uninvited I have on here because I think it evokes a lot of Feels and thoughts about Dick's issues with romantic relationships, whereas some songs like Too Close, What If I Was Nothing, Monsters, etc, are definitely songs about romances but I have them on the playlist more for the feels and thoughts they evoke for Dick's relationships with family members, etc.

Also also a lot of them I pick just for a weird fusion of jazz and rock that I feel fits Dick well and inspires me when I'm writing him even just in action scenes. Like Alex Clare, Apartment 26, Portugal, Roisin Murphy, etc.

I would! Jvar specifically, even though he does some horrific things, isn't equally horrible to everyone. He actually values and cares about the well being of his family a lot.

In his eyes, his family is one unit, all united. (and that's why when he strikes out to hurt one of them, he always reaches a very distinct moment in which he decides they no longer deserve the right to be his family before he lashes out). He sees himself as a family man, because his family are among the select few people he considers on his level, and not below him. His wife, Mariana, even though I don't write about her much, is his most trusted advisor and confidant. If it is all possible for a man as arrogant and self absorbed as jvar to have someone he considers his equal, that someone is her.

Plus, no ruler rules alone. In his eyes, Jvar is a messiah of sorts. He's working with a God to bring in a new world. He's building the best future for his country and his family. Jvar cares about Itreyan's success only as much as it relates to his own prosperity. As long as he is in power, wealthy, and well liked enough to not be in danger, the peasants can starve.

But his family is different. No ruler rules alone. To truly fulfill the quest he's embarking on for Mor in the world's most fucked up form of manifest destiny, Jvar is creating something that will outlive him. If he gets his way, Mor will trample all enemies and obstacles left in the world, and let him rule humanity as her right hand man. But as any God - king-emporer knows, to truly succeed there, he needs a dynasty. At the bare minimum, he wants Itreyan's government to always be ruled by those he deems worthy, even after he dies, by having a wife he trusts and a child to succeed him.

Antonius, his only child, represents everything Jvar wants for the few people he considers worth his time. Antonius is the future of everything he's worked so hard for. Antonius is a Vetrecini. Jvar loves him arguably as much as he loves himself, and he wants to give his son the world.

So yes, to answer your question, I'd absolutely write Jvar being soft with his family, because without that side of him, he's not Jvar.

I wanted to ramble a lot more about the times Jvar has chosen to lash out at members of his family + Jvar's upbringing but it was barely related and this post is long so I'll do it in another one.

19. Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

Aged/immortal/ageless/eldritch/etc aristocrat schemes/fails at scheming while struggling between duty/objectives and Their Feelings/Ignoring Said Feelings while slinking about their domain/palace/etc in sad/horny/yet always stylish dishevelment. From this conflict a story (or ‘story’) arises. Never gets old. Much like said protagonist. (=which, I will remind, doesn’t mean ‘goodie’!)

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

—insert obscure image from Ancient Greek plays! —insert obscure reference to Shakespeare! —insert obscure reference to obscure historical event! —have I yelled about German Expressionism lately? —insert obscure reference to modernist poetry! —Insert obscure reference to 16th century Holy Roman Empire realpolitik that I read in a primary source once and thought, damn that was shady, wonder if that was in reference to—my entire fic Renaissance is this. Literally the whole thing. I’d thought about updating it with another chapter just deconstructing all the early 17th century shit-talking, because I really didn’t give the reader much. (it being an ‘outsider glimpse’ sort of situation) It might be good to do, early 17th shit-talking was marvellous, it was a ridiculous time politically. Not that I was ever there! Haha. Imagine!

Anyway, I’m not super in touch with what I have/haven’t written/actually published as fic, but a couple of mainstays do come to mind: every time I make some wry insinuation at how Alexander got all that shit funded, I am absolutely insinuating that Frederick the Great was Alexander’s sugardaddy. That absolutely would have happened were Alexander a real person, oh my god. But Chanel! I hear you declaim! He’s a real ancestor of real people who are really alive today! Oh babes, look up who they’ve supported historically and what parties current members of that family have hitched their horses to. (The 'friendliest' 20th century name I can comfortably put here is Franco. Yeah.) I don’t give a good goddamn if insinuating an 18th century member of that dynasty (who incidentally, was probably the most progressive of that lot since, and he lived 250 years ago) shagged a fictional disaster eldritch monstrosity in a way that was maybe a bit transactional is ‘disrespectful’. You know what’s really disrespectful? Supporting the fash and far-right n*tionalist movements xoxo

I would say I have a fic for this but it’s been stuck at 80% done for about 18 months and my fic to-do list is the real eldritch horror

25. What part of writing is the most fun?

That moment when the coin drops and the tiny thing that makes a story make internal sense clicks into place. This can take longer than one might expect. After that, everything becomes a gleeful race to the finish where I constantly go ahaha! but you know what would be REALLY fucked up!! ohohoho, but you know what would be even FUNNIER!

I don't know, I just like that whatever I write that doesn't have to have commercial considerations can come from a place of unhinged joy, even (especially?) when the subject matter is dark.

One of the things you notice about The Satanic Temple pretty quickly is that "slander" just means "things we don't like, especially if they're true", and of course their fourth tenet about "freedom to offend" only ever goes in the one direction

But this "the TV show writers and network should apologize!!" stuff is straight out of the Catholic League. Bill Donahue is embarrassed for them.

Imagine enshrining "the freedom to offend" in your religion, parading around proud of being legally recognized as a religion

...then being so upset about how free speech is actually understood by the law that parody is something that people "get away with."

As we've pointed out before, that episode of the Paramount+ TV show "Evil" was actually rather generous given the actual origins of The Satanic Temple as a Spectacle Films project that just got out of hand.

It was an especially charitable episode given that the two owners of TST set up their T-shirt selling, intellectual property owning for profit corporation United Federation of Churches LLC and years later pursued nonprofit church status for a different entity, "The Satanic Temple (Inc)", after it already had an entity with IRS-approved nonprofit status: Reason Alliance Ltd.

It's just that normal nonprofits have to say where their money is coming and going. And churches don't.

We can't know their hearts, but Lucien Greaves and Cevin Soling probably realized that being so open about turning around and sending money given to their nonprofit Reason Alliance to the for-profit corp United Federation of Churches LLC d/b/a The Satanic Temple would eventually raise some questions. But two entities named "The Satanic Temple" sharing the same website, HQ, and branding, neither one reporting its finances publicly? Maybe no one would notice.

By comparison, the TV show "Evil" ends up being extraordinarily charitable to their universe's "The New Ministry of Satan", all things considered.

In addition to "Evil" making sure their Baphomet statue was quite distinct from TST's Instagram prop, that may be why The Satanic Temple is unlikely to come after CBS or Paramount+ the same way it went after Netflix and Warner Bros.

Soling and Greaves don't actually want a news story that would draw attention to just what the hell they're doing with all of those front companies and all that damn money they keep bringing in.

Note: We're not going to link back to the Twitter conversation, even tho it is public, b/c the people having it mostly aren't anybody. It's just representative of where TST's core members are at this point, and the level of paranoia they're operating at.

Negative things about their chosen organization couldn't possibly be valid; it must be that some secret group of enemies is organizing against them, and they're beset on all sides, and it's SLANDER to point out stuff their glorious leaders said in the past. Etc.

It's funny how hypocritical they are about it, but it's also really sad, and ultimately, it's dangerous and harmful. And we hope everyone gets out without being hurt too badly or helping TST keep hurting others badly.

I just feel like she would be neat. Of Egg’s progeny... Daeron and Rhaelle, hands down. Jenny is cool too though she’s not a Targ. From Daeron the Good’s line, I think Maekar is pretty cool... and obviously I am a number one Daenora fan girl. Daeron G himself and Myriah/Mariah (I prefer Mariah) deserved everything, in my opinion. Get the fuck out of here Daemon. Let them live! From the Dragonsbane fam... Daena, Rhaena, andddd Elaena the Maidenvault girls! And I like to headcanon Naerys marching through the Red Keep with a literal army of septons, septas, and begging brothers while Aegon has a hissy fit and ‘ain’t nobody fucking with my clique’ plays. From the Dancers, I have a massive soft spot for Helaena and Jaehaera. From the Old King’s reign it’s all about Alysanne and her daughters. Those girls did not deserve what they got. And as for the Conquerors I actually love Visenya and I hate her fanon characterization as constantly fighting with Rhaenys over Aegon. He’s not that interesting.
