Brutally honest opinion on Sonamy, Sonadow and Whispangle? :P
Sorry for the late reply ><
S0namy:
Tumblr media
Hoo boy... I have many thoughts... most not very good...
At best, I'm apathetic towards it. At worst, I'm actively annoyed and/or frusterated by it.
I think it's heavily overrated and isn't that good of a ship in general. The amount of bad portrayals of s0namy outweigh the good and/or okay ones imo, and the toxicity of the fandom surrounding it only adds to my dislike for it.
(I'm not saying everyone who likes s0namy is toxic. There are many people in the s0namy fandom that are chill. Unfortunately, there's a vocal part of the s0namy fandom that is very toxic and gatekeepy)
Alot of s0namy portrayals unfortunately fall into "Amy makes Sonic uncomfortable and/or is possessive, but it's seen as cute" which is a dynamic I really don't like. For example, Sonic X has arguably the most popular portrayal of the ship, but imo is one of if not the worst portrayals of the ship.
Then you have other extreme that the ship sometimes falls into, where I can best describe it as "they sure are standing next to eachother" (Frontiers) where there's just... nothing to it, besides "oh it's the main girl and main boy so you have to ship them, they're obviously meant for eachother!"
Another thing, it can be annoying sometimes how the fandom will exaggerate how much the ship is actually canon, saying things like "they're totally dating! they're a couple!" when in reality Sonic is single and will most likely continue to be. At most, it's teased because it's a popular ship, but it won't go further than that.
So the best way to describe how canon S0namy actually is:
Tumblr media
Sonadow:
I like it! I think it's cute! I can't see it working out in canon, but I really like fanon sonadow and it's fun to write.
Also, even though prime sonadow is nothing like sonic or shadow would act in canon, I still think it's cute and it's the only thing I enjoyed about the show lol.
Whispangle:
Tumblr media
This one kinda hurts... 😔
I used to really like Whispangle, I thought it was really cute. The mini series did a good job of showing their bond.
Tumblr media
But then the city arc happened...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What the hell is this.
Why is Tangle reminding Whisper of her trauma so casually when she was shown to be considerate of her feelings before.
Why is Whisper being shown as in the wrong for being upset by this.
Why does Tangle get a 2 panel half assed apology while Whisper gets a THREE PAGE apology.
After this whole mess, it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I can't get behind this ship anymore because of how badly this was handled, and how flanderized it is now (it seems very onesided now, a lot of "Whisper angsting, Tangle comforting" over and over)

Random question: does it happen to you that you gradually start to see a ship you love with a completely different dynamic?
When I first entertained the thought of Hecula, it was clear in my mind that it was 100% onesided: Dracula is obsessed with Hector, Hector hated those forced attentions and felt like a prisoner. This is how I imagined the Bride AU, as Hector being forced in the role of a "bride" and hating the scorn that came from the rest of the castle. This is also because back then, I believed that Hector canonically didn't think much of his Lord - a superficial reading that missed the small details and the peculiar choice of words in Japanese :P
But then brain started to think "but what if 🥺 what if hector 🥺 loved his lord too 🥺 and he was happy with him 🥺 and he kissed him sometimes 🥺", and then I uhhhhhh never stopped lol. It's still not a cutesy dynamic because it's so unbalanced it's not even funny (jk it is lol), but it comes easier to me now to imagine Hector being satisfied in his role as Dracula's favorite, basking in the love and accepting that they're both special to each other... although canon dictates that it doesn't last forever, which is fine by me :) that's also part of the fun :)
Now, if I ever decide to bring back the old Bride AU, I don't think I'd have it in me to repeat the same angsty dynamic. I think I'd imagine it as I said, as Hector growing accustomed and even fond of his "husband", although always with an undercurrent of bitterness and desire for equality. Which was utterly unthinkable to me a year ago!
Anyway. Question is, has it happened to you? lmao. For example, your Harkula fics seem to explore how their dynamic would shift in a century, from master/angry "child" to proper husbands. Was this always your vision, or did your interpretations of the characters shift with time?
So sorry i came back to this ask so late @beevean - but thank you for sharing your thoughts and asking! I do love every version of hecula that you're writing, these two are just so ughhhh. Love when a master/sire turns more affectionate with time towards the object of their desire (with hecula, harkula, dracfield, you name it)😩❤️‍🔥
To be honest, harkula has been my longest and biggest ship I have ever written for and god how i do love these bastards to death. I did start off writing them with the big bang of my questionable long fic though, and feel like that did hugely influence the way i have written them ever since, with drac being misguided but still deeply loving jonathan in his very own way, and johnny loving him back just as much, if not more. Their drive comes from the elemental feeling of sheer love - no matter how monstrous, self destructing or twisted that love might be. That's just how they always have been. I love to write them as murder husbands or sire/fledgling or sire/human pet, but the very first version of the characters, in which they both care and kill for the other, still remains being one of my favs.
So, if anything, with me it is the other way around than with you - over the course of the last few months/years i have actually started to explore even darker but probably more realistic AUs in which they start openly unhealthy and miserable and remain that way the entire way through (cough, TGN, cough). Codependent. Bound. So. I guess that counts as writing and character development?

I've been reading Riordanverse fanfictions for a while, and writing them for a while to, and realized that I've read a lot of different Leo pairings. Ironically, I'm not actually the biggest fan of any Leo ship, because personally I think Leo's aro/ace, and has no attraction whatsoever (I could write essay after essay about why, but that's not the point right now). However, thinking back on all the Leo fics I've accidently read over the years (or purposefully, if the main ship or the plot intrigued me enough that I could put aside my preconcieved biases) got me thinking about whether I think Leo would be in a qpr with the characters who others ship him with. So, here's that:
Disclaimer, I'm not dissing on any ships here, ship what you want unless it's actively harmful! These are just my opinions on if I think Leo would be in a qpr with a character, because I really struggle to see him dating in my own head
Calypso — Maybe
Now, I've written Caleo before, when I was much younger and had the need to make every single fic I write canon compliant (still have this urge too, since I use fanfiction as an extension of canon works, which is why I rarely write AUs though I have) but in recent years, I just can't get myself to write them anymore, so my canon compliant fics have them breaking up pretty soon after TON for my sanity. As for them in a QPR, I've written it before (see Self-Discovery on ao3 by TheAmazingMaddy) (actually it might be on Wattpad too, but I can't remember, same name) (Double checked, it is also there) and that was such a fun fic for me to write! However, in the future I see them more as business partners and close friends than queer platonic partners. If you've read my Solangelo future fic Surprise! you'd know in that fic Leo and Calypso have their mechanic shop that they talk about in HOH, but Calypso has her own girlfriend (Sapphic a-spec Calypso is my new favorite thing) and Leo is living his life with his adoptive children, Madalena and Aidan, and they're content. (I won't go into any more details about this dynamic because I'd probably cap the word limit if I try, but if anyone wants elaboration, feel free to ask)
Jason Grace — Very likely
As aforementioned, I mainly write canon-compliant fics post TOA, so I'd probably never write this myself, but out of everyone on this list, Jason is by far the most likely candidate. Valgrace is by far the Leo ship content I see the most, as I've read a lot of aus that include it, mainly for the Solangelo content ngl. But, back to the qpr stuff, I definitely see them being queer platonic partners, as they're friendship is already solid. (Note; I can also totally see Jason having a onesided crush on Leo, which I know is definitely not a popular hc as most fics have Leo as the one down bad, but I also have reasons for this I can elaborate if even one person asks, or if I feel like I'll explode if I don't say it)
Jason Grace & Piper McLean — Likely enough
Disclaimer, I was raised without any knowledge on polyamory, and still have very little knowledge on it, as I struggle comprehending attraction to one person, much less more than one, but just because I don't understand it, doesn't mean I don't support everyone, and am willing to try and learn from more coherent sources
I just wanted to put a disclaimer before this one, as it's the only poly ship on this list, and I'm honestly afraid I'll say something ignorant and offensive, when that's not my intention at all. I'm not 100% sure how poly qprs would work, but I don't see why it wouldn't work? I mean, I haven't read anything on poly qprs, but I haven't consumed much poly content in general, and am being forthright when I say I am ignorant. That being said, the Lost Trio has some of my favorite friendship dynamics, so I see it as likely enough they could be in a poly qpr. Piper, obviously, is romantically dating Shel though, as they are one of my favorite underrated ships. I adore them, and wish we could get some more content on them and their meeting.
Drew Tanaka— Definitely Not
This one is because I very recently read a Solangelo fic that had background Leo/Drew mentions, and I didn't read the compliant story about them the author had written but I still decided to add it. Personally, I can't see it. Don't get me wrong, I love the Drew redemption arcs that a lot of Drew fics have, and I've even written Aro Drew myself for Aro Week 2024 (Aro Allo Drew to be specific) but I really can't see Leo and Drew working. Friends? Possibly, I'm not 100% sure, I could see Drew getting annoyed with him too fast for them to be around each other for more than 5 minutes at a time. QPP? Definitely not in my head.
Austin Lake— Maybe? I honestly can't tell, but the idea has merit
If anyone has read my Apollo Cabin fics, or my Ace 2023 and Aro 2024 oneshot collections, they'd know not only am I a bonafide expert in all things Aro/Ace Leo, but I am also a bonafide expert in all things Aro/Ace Austin, crazy how things work out, huh? Now, does me hcing them both as aromantic and asexual (both leaning more towards repulsed because self-projection? I don't know them)make them a good candidate for a qpr? I honestly don't know. The merit for this one comes from the fact that I can see Leo building or fixing instruments for Austin to play, and I think that's sweet. Austin plays the Valdezinator now, I don't make the rules.
Connor Stoll— Possible, but the world might come to an end if it happens
Leo and Connor are both such chaotic energies that combining them might be detrimental to the human and mythological worlds alike. They'd get along fantastically, so them being in a qpr is not out of the question, it's just the pranks that they'd come up with if they were together often would be the thing of nightmares. When I read them together in a fic, I was honestly scared for the well-being of the camp. They scare me together a bit.
Laurel Victor- No
Okay, admit time, the tagged Leo/Laurel fic I've read was written by me... Now, you're probably thinking why did I write this? The answer is simple, it was the fic First Dates in my Aro Week 2024 oneshot collection, where Jason and Piper set Leo up with a blind date with Laurel that goes pretty badly to try and take his mind off the Argo II building process and him feeling like a 3rd wheel (Because obviously Leo has no attraction towards her), but I feel obligated to add it to this list because I mean I have reread my own works before? I'm just saying it would go really badly because Laurel and Leo are both all energy all the time but in completely different, and butting heads kinda way.
You know, I probably have read more, but these are the ones I remember (mainly because the fics I read ages ago had some really memorable parts, that even if I probably would never find them again, it's forever altered my brain chemistry) at the moment. I'd love to hear if people have read or written other Leo ships, that they'd like me to rate the qpr-ability of!

Oh lol, that ask about hypocritical Daemyra shippers hit so hard, I couldn't help but cringe/laugh in sympathy. I'm so sorry if that happened in a fanspace you frequent, anon!! But it really reminded me of one of the reasons I don't interact much with HOTD fandom besides besides reblogging art and memes and discussing the show with a friend.
See, I like a lot of different ship in HOTD, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any I actually dislike even if I am indifferent to some. So it's especially weird to me when shipwars between Aemond/Alys and Aemond/Helaena fans turn from "Our ships is canon in the books!" "Well, our ship might still be canon in the show!" to declaring that Aemond/Alys would necessarily HAVE to be depicted as abusive on one side and bashing the brosis shippers as degenerate freaks for daring to ship incest in a show where the main canon ship is uncle/nice on the other. And then I've also seen at least a couple of Aemond/Alys fans take that even further by preemptively worrying that the greedy, nasty incest shippers will take their ship and make it all about Oedipal onesided Aemond/Alicent undertones... which, as much as I love both ships between troubled younger men and witchy older women AND momson ships, and as much as I am that rare breed of shipper who enjoys multiple interesting ships being connected together by one of the characters involved having a type or unrequieted feelings or other stuff like that, I could actually sympathize with because having fanworks and discussions for your ships overtaken by another ship you don't even like does suck. But again, why the weird focus on the incest angle in the show where THE MAIN CANON SHIP is uncle/niece?! XD
And that's not even mentioning the hate I've seen other people spew about, again, Aemond/Alicent AND Aegon/Alicent. "Something something why take genuinely fascinating parent/child relationships and "warp" them into incest," as I'm sure you can imagine. ... it actually reminds me of people crying out in outrage over slash ships, or even some friends-to-lovers het ships with dynamics that go beyond typical Hollywood ideas of romance. The assumption that adding a romantic or sexual element, even just in fanon rather than canon, will necessarily "ruin" a well-written, interesting relationship - rather than allow fans to explore it in new contexts and settings, appreciating its complexity and nuances while looking at them in a different light and through different means.
And then there's all the Modern AU Daemyra fics where they're not related... which may of course be entirely motivated by a simple wish to explore the dynamic between Daemon and Rhaenyra without the burden of legacy and the mess of family drama weighing on them, just enjoying their passion without additional complications. But it does make me chuckle in a vaguely exasperated way giving everything else...
Sorry for the rant. I'm not really mad about it, as I'm used to doing my things in my own little corner of fandom, but sometimes it does make me want to ask those people "you DO realize we are all watching the same Dragon Family Incest Show, RIGHT?!" XD
[x]
I hate to see fandom bringing out the worst in people when, in theory, it's not impossible for us all to just be having fun and enjoying our show. In theory, in a perfect world, we could all just ship and let ship.
What I really wish some people on tumblr would learn is just how to keep their mouth shut. Some thoughts you can just keep to yourself. Maybe the world would be a better place if you didn't say the thing. A lot of the hate I see just snowballs. One Aemond/Alys shipper says something negative about Helaemond, a Helaemond shipper remarks on it - this is just an example - then that remark gets traction, leading to someone saying something negative about Aemon and Alys, and now all of the sudden both ships are under attack and there's a ship war. If Person A had just not made that post, if Person B had just ignored what Person A had said, it might not have gotten ugly on such a big scale. Never underestimate the power of just ignoring.
And of course when you've got incest ships in the mix, the other side is going to come out in full force to condemn it. That might work in other fandoms, but this is ASOIAF, and this is the incest show. The incest shippers are not crazy.
The assumption that adding a romantic or sexual element, even just in fanon rather than canon, will necessarily "ruin" a well-written, interesting relationship - rather than allow fans to explore it in new contexts and settings, appreciating its complexity and nuances while looking at them in a different light and through different means.
THIS.
Like shipping something romantically is some eraser that comes along and erases everything that's unique and interesting about a relationship. Um, no.
It creates new layers!

You know when you watch something as a kid and then, years later, you unexpectedly fall back into it all of a sudden? This has been happening to me with Yu-Gi-Oh GX, the first Yu-Gi-Oh sequel/spin-off. It's a show with a lot (and I mean a LOT) of flaws, but it has bunch of really fun characters, dynamics, and arcs.
One thing I've started thinking back on are the siblings relationships in it, actually. There's a few of them and they're all surprisingly entertaining, each in their own different way. I kinda wanna look deeper into the fandom to see if anyone actively ships and/or creates content for them. I remember back in the day there were a couple of kinkmemes and you could find at least some incest prompts on there… but who knows, with the state fandom is in nowadays...
The most prominent sibling relationship in the show is between the Marufuji/Truesdale (localization changes, you know how it is!) brothers, Sho/Syrus and Ryo/Zane, respectively the main character's awkward but eager best friend and sidekick with self-esteem issues who turns out to be surprisingly driven under pressure and the cool, aloof top duelist who loves the game and makes a point to respect his opponents but can be too harsh and take it all too seriously. Sho/Syrus greatly admires Ryo/Zane but also feels always in his shadow and aims to prove himself truly worthy of being his younger brother. Ryo/Zane, on the other hand, is especially demanding and cold with him, at least in the beginning, but is also ready to sacrifice himself for him at the same time. One interesting thing about Sho/Syrus is that he keeps calling the main character "big bro" despite them being the same age... even going as far as fighting over who gets to be his honorary little brother with another student who sees the main character as a kind of role model! Take that however you will, I guess... to me, there's definitely something to be said about brother complexes, lol.
Then you have the Tenjouin/Rhodes siblings, Asuka/Alexis and Fubuki/Atticus. The latter spends the beginning of season one mysteriously disappeared, but that's all good fro a shipper's perspective, really. Asuka/Alexis is that one female character who's supposed to be pretty and smart and cool and good at dueling all at the same time so she gets lots of guys, both from the main cast and one-shot characters, fawning over her… but with the exception of a hint of a crush on the protagonist and a friendship with Ryou/Zane (who used to be Fubuki/Atticus' best friend, which is an intriguing thought in itself...), the main guy she's interested in and angst over is ofc her missing brother. Who turns out to have been stuck in another dimension the whole time! And it's not even as simple as that, either, because he also got possessed by an evil entity and recruited into a villanous organization putting the whole world at risk! Personally, I don't think the story arc where all that happened was handled very well, but it started off the relationship between these two with lots and lots of potential. Especially because when Fubuki/Atticus is not being possessed anymore, he's an unexpected mix of still suffering from all he went through and flamboyant idol-wannabe. And he has this weird obsession with his little sister's love life, too? Like, there's this guy, Jun Manjoume/Chazz Princeton, who starts out with maybe a little crush and then suddenly falls HARD for her in a way I always felt was really contrived even as a kid, leading to a weird onesided thing that I personally didn't enjoy because I felt it derailed his character and reduced hers to just the Girl To Be Fought Over in the narrative whenever it was brought up. But Fubuki/Atticus takes a liking to Jun/Chazz, and becomes sort of a mentor to him, to the point of helping him hit on Asuka/Alexis. Except, despite him never seeming to be malicious or trying to hurt the other two in any way, the stunts Fubuki/Atticus suggests range from the ridiculous to the actively dangerous. That's probably just supposed to be his showy personality, meant to clash with Asuka/Alexis' more serious one... but wouldn't it be more fun if he was really jealous and trying to sabotage the main guy with an interest in his sister without even realizing it? Even despite liking the guy in question as a friend?
Speaking about that, there's also Jun Manjoume/Chazz Princeton himself, and his two older brothers, Shouji/Jagger and Slade/Chousaku. They're your usual rich, arrogant family with great ambitions and a hidden dysfunctional side. Jun/Chazz is a rival to the main character, and he starts out as this cocky jerk who doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself and is not above using underhand tactics when he figures out things aren't gonna go his way. But then season one actually gives him a couple of episodes focused on him where not only does he get some REALLY nice character growth (seriously, years later I'm still impressed about the show handling it as nicely as it did, even with the obligatory dose of silliness and overdramatic card-game-related drama!), but the audience gets to see the influence his brothers have had on him and on his self-centered attitude. Those two have some sinister big plan to (figuratively) dominate the world by acquiring high positions in politics, finance, and the Yu-Gi-Oh version of high level professional sports, pro dueling... the last one being, ofc, where Jun/Chazz comes in. More than just expecting big things from him, they demand them, putting an unbearable pression on him and belittling him as an underachiever holding their family back, to the point he doesn't even really duel for himself and for the fun of it anymore but does it mostly for them. They seem to lay off a bit after Jun/Chazz losing an important duel they did their best to turn in a PR stunt leads them to lose their cool in public, grabbing their youngest brother and loudly berating him in front of not just one but two entire dueling schools (yup, dueling school are a thing here!), which prompts all the students and staff to take Jun/Chazz's side against them and cheer for him to show him their support... but then they come back some ten episodes later, purposefully putting him in an even worse position, and Jun/Chazz finally has to stand up to them by himself for the very fate of his dueling school. The original Japanese and the localized dub actually give a slightly different vibe to the relationship between the three of them. Jun is very respectful towards his older brothers and keeps feeling somewhat indebted to them even after everything they did, and while they don't have anything like an onscreen reconciliation with him, Shouji and Chousaku grudgingly acknowledge that he's grown and become stronger as a person and a duelist, eventually coming to at least respect him as more than just a tool for their plans. Meanwhile, Chazz seems more intimidated and resigned than anything, and Jagger and Slade go as far as disowning him after seeing him lose in that big duel I was talking about and, if I recall correctly, there might actually be a line from the main character in season two referring to their behavior as abuse. The manga, which is very very different from the anime in a lot of respects, apparently takes it even further by making Shouji and Chousaku straight-up evil and even having them brainwash Jun at one point... but I just started reading it and I haven't gotten to that part yet so I can't comment on that, lol, just saying what I heard about it.
Finally, you have Sartorius and Sarina... in the original, the Saiou siblings, Takuma and Mizuchi. Unfortunately, I don't remember a lot about them (might do a rewatch someday!) but I have a feeling they would be particularly fascinating to incest shippers, despite not appearing nearly enough together. He's an eerily pretty psychic who can see the future by reading tarot cards and gets some extra supernatural abilities when an eldritch being from outer space possesses him and inspires him to become the founder and leader of a creepy, rapidly expanding cult that starts out brainwash insecure students but aims to conquer (or destroy, depending on the canon) the whole world to "purify" it from its corruption and "darkness." She's a psychic as well and also dresses as a miko, and she's very protective of her brother because she remembers the kind person he used to be. As children, they were shunned for their powers and so they clung tightly to each other. In the end, she helps break him out of the possession and they are finally reunited.
I might be forgetting something, but those should be all the main ones! Who knows, maybe someone will read all of this and find them as intriguing and potentially shippable as I do. ;)
Hi, Anon!
Yugioh! has come up before but most of the relationships you mentioned are new to me/new to the blog. I know the pain of getting into a fandom (or back into a fandom) years after its heyday and longing for new content or just people to talk with who are into it now, not just were into it in the past.
Thank you so much for telling us about all there is to potentially interest us in Yugioh! This is a wonderful write-up and the franchise certainly has a lot to offer.
