#I don’t know shit about the real Karl Lagerfeld and I don’t care to

I’ve been watching Becoming Karl Lagerfeld on Disney+ one episode at a time when I have the mental capacity to be watching something in a language I don’t speak* (they mostly speak French in this series) but Karl and his mother speak German together and there are occasional other bits in German as well, I think the other main bit in German was when Marlene Dietrich turned up. My German is good enough that I can understand what they’re saying like 95% of the time.

The English subtitles are often different to what they’re actually saying. I feel like most of the time the difference is due to getting a nuance across rather than sticking to the literal words being said. And sometimes I’ve been switching between Danish and English subtitles and replaying scenes just to see what the translation is like and how it’s different for each language and it’s been fun and interesting to look at the language that way**

anyway in episode 4 at about 4:20 we get this exchange:

Karl’s mother: ich hab [sehr?] gesagt

Karl Lagerfeld: Glückwunsch

In English this is translated as:

KM: I told you it was a start

KL: good for you

In Danish it’s translated as:

KM: jeg advarede dig [I warned you]

KL: tillykke [congratulations]

I’ve replayed this like ten times now and while I’m not entirely sure what the mother is saying I am also 100% sure she is not saying “ich hab dich gewarnt” (“I warned you”) or even Sie instead of dich. Unless she’s speaking some dialect I’m not familiar with? I think she’s saying “I told you so”, which would be “ich habe es dir gesagt” which could plausibly come out sounding like “ich hab s ehr gesagt” since she’s already colloquially shortening habe to hab. I’m not sure though because, well, not a native speaker of German. I just suffered through 8 years of it as a foreign language in school.

I paused at this scene because the English subtitles didn’t make any sense to me for the scene - I like “good for you” as a translation of “glückwunsch” because it carries the meaning across of him acknowledging she was right and being pissed off about it, but “I told you it’s a start”?? What? Where does that come from?? She didn’t say anything like that? The start of what? It’s nonsense. The Danish translation works much better here, a plain “I warned you”, or the same as “I told you so”. (Danish and German share the same passive aggressive use of congratulations as a response here lmao.)

I can’t speak for the French bits but I feel like the German bits were being well translated up until now, and now I’m just annoyed.

*i’m aware there’s an English audio option but i violently hate watching dubbed media because the Lips Don’t Match and it’s so incongruent and distracting I can’t focus on it at all. it’s like being fed noise: the face is telling me one thing and the sound is telling me a completely different thing and the two combine into a scrambled nonsensical mess.

I figured I’d catch up tonight since I’m not doing anything in particular for the holiday. I do really like Halloween and Fall in general.  Next Friday I took the day off for my mom’s birthday.  Her and I have walked in the Day of the Dead parade together on that day for years here in Pilsen.  It’s always been cool to rekindle that relationship over something as morose as death and the occult.  But my mom and I have always been into those kind of things.  Blame the Romanian side of my family.  I could very well be Dracula.  For Halloween at least.  Or Karl Lagerfeld.  Or Garth Marenghi for that matter.  I’m not even sure if they’re not all the same person.  But I chose to stay home again and think about what I’ve done.  I know I’ve done something.  I don’t have facebook or twitter anymore.  I never used dating apps or linked in or anything like that.  Tumblr, Instagram and Soundcloud are really the only places I share openly in varying degrees and methods.  We all know by now I live a strange life.  At my apartment it’s painfully normal and mostly quiet.  This week has been more peaceful too.  A lot of things sort of worked themselves out naturally over time.  I had to make the conscious decisions in my life to seize the opportunities as they arose.  Some people will never understand what percentage of those I seize.  It’s like Sonic rings to me maybe.  The gym before work is one of those moments.  It’s a way different vibe at seven am.  Who the fuck is waking up that early to go to the gym anyway?  I am three or four times a week still.  I just listen to music really loud and think about life.  I don’t really have a goal except staying healthy.  And the time I’ve put in has rewarded me back.  I put a lot of time into this blog too.  I think it was at a shitty Halloween party years ago I got lost in this platform in a corner sipping on shitty beer and hating everybody.  Years later I don’t drink anymore.  I don’t actually hate many people.  I just know when people are incapable of respecting my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.  There’s a lot of that going around now here in America.  And a lot of it I’m informed through the people that follow me and inform me on issues I don’t always relate to but still have empathy towards.  It always gets me to thinking how I could be a little better at getting along with the world.  And I’ve grown a lot since the waking nightmare of drinking shitty PBR in a corner somewhere by myself on Halloween.

The truth is without this community in particular I would not have made the choices that brought me to this particular moment of my life.  Admittedly it’s a weird place to be.  The community here actually is totally chill most of the time I’ve been down here lurking in the depths.  Real life is a scary place.  Maybe I wandered into some places and situations I shouldn’t have.  There’s nothing I regret particularly.  My focus has definitely narrowed over time.  But everybody knows I don’t really care much about a format.  I’ve just shared things that inspire me.  All that inspiration and collective validation got me thinking about things in a different light.  I do genuinely care about people’s feelings and emotions.  People think I’m aloof or standoffish but I’ve always just been super respectful of space.  On the internet particularly it can be a scary place to interact with people.  Real life too.  I’ve talked to enough people on here to understand space and personal boundaries.  This is supposed to be a safe space for everyone.  It’s been one of the safest spaces for me to share what has literally been a nightmare of a year for me.  It’s not anymore.  I think I had to do a lot of work to turn things around.  I still have more work to do.  I don’t necessarily stress out anymore about the path I’m on.  I don’t ever worry about how I’ve never “made it.”  Or how I’m not “important” or “famous” enough.  That shit bores me.  I’ve been ripped off creatively enough over the years to know how it feels to be abandoned by your heroes.  I was never trying to be a hero for anybody.  Maybe I was for one particular person.  I still am for one particular person.  I’m sure she knows how much I care.  I care enough to give her space.  I care about a lot of things in this life.  I care about growing more plants indoors.  Maybe composting some banana peels and playing more Donkey Kong Country too.  I plan mostly on being myself like I always have been.  I have not always been so efficient at it.  And I’m sure people don’t want to hear about the nightmares of adulthood on a Friday night.  I’ve reflected on this blog like this for over a year now.  If anything is different it’s that I’m more impressed with exploring how to be more genuine.  And there’s a lot of things I’ve learned to ignore so as not to get jaded, disturbed, intimidated or thrown completely off the path.  Because I know people on this very blog will hunt me down and scold me harshly.

People do care very deeply down here it’s true.  I care too.  I am unapologetically inclusive when it comes to this community particularly.  I don’t really have much to say about the specifics of politics in America these days.  Not even Korea very much either surprisingly.  I do care very deeply about China.  Hamburgers from Xi’an in particular.  They are part of my relationship.  So is running and going to the gym every waking moment of the day.  I actually have it down to a schedule.  I spend a lot of time just planning how I’m going to spend it.  And a lot of what I do is an afterthought to me.  But I am in a very particular place in my life and how I got there wasn’t by stepping on the backs of people to get ahead.  That article I read today said that people with grateful dispositions see their efforts grandly but not themselves.  It’s true I’ve been doing some shit no human being would dare try without an entire cheering section and film crew.  But this isn’t really about me.  To a certain extent I’ve been trying to stay alive and stay relevant in a society that expects you to but won’t ever try themselves.  I see all this bullshit in the world and I wonder who is going to go out there and fight it.  Who is going to help resist this constant regression towards hate and intolerance?  Who is going to do that freely and put themselves at risk just because it’s the right thing to do?  Me.  Who is going to do the right thing when everybody is doing wrong?  Me.  How do I even know what the right thing is anymore?  That’s a complex issue.  But it is definitely informed by the idea that we live in a society.  Joker and Batman memes aside.  I’m not going anywhere.  I may fly out to New York in January for a weekend and tell nobody.  Maybe around January 6th.  That’d be two years exactly since I started turning things around for myself.  Things definitely got a lot worse before they got better.  Through all this people to this day know the context of the type of person I am.  And I made the choice for that to happen.  And it didn’t happen by standing by the sidelines and cracking jokes about people’s struggles, challenges, and dreams in life.  They are all different.  We are all different.  I’m not going to tell you to vote or watch what candy you take from strangers.  I am here to tell you I support all of you.  I’ve have nothing really to gain but living in a world that is welcoming to everyone.  That’s the way it’s gotta be for me and the people closest to my heart.  Wherever they are.  Spooky shit I know.  Not as spooky as the Airplay icon in my menu bar.   <3 Tim
