If They Didn’t Get on the Train Shana/Grace Deleted Scene:

Honestly, it wasn’t a deleted scene so much as when I was copying and pasting, I absolutely left it out of the chapter. @kujo1597 @andromidagalaxie One day, this tag will work between us. @strawdool @negromouthandafro I really didn’t have to do anything but copy and paste, but if there’s errors, I apologize. This takes place within Chapter 19′s time frame.

“Hey, Grace! There’s somebody that wanted to speak to you!” one of the bartenders said when she was finished with her set at a friend’s bar. She was successful, but she didn’t have the Monroe money that she had been brought up in, and her trust fund was still hefty, but she still had bills that she was responsible for, so she worked. She didn’t mind working, because she was able to do something that she loved. A lot of people knew her. A lot of famous people liked her. A lot of people tried to talk to her. She didn’t expect to see Shana whenever she turned her eyes towards where the bartender gestured.

The woman had a large puff in the back of her head and was wearing a beret on the smoothed down part. She smiled and headed Grace’s way and Grace didn’t know whether she should prepare herself to fight or just run so she wouldn’t have to. “Don’t tell me you don’t remember me, Bitch?” Shana asked and laughed. Grace relaxed a little, but was still tense. “Come sit down with me. I’ll buy you a drink.” Grace followed her, the frohawk on her own head peeking over the heads of others as they worked through the crowd and sat at a table. “What will you have?”

“They know me in here. Just a Gracefront.”

“A Gracefront?” Shana repeated and laughed. “What’s in it?”

“It's a frozen virgin melon spritzer. I don’t drink alcohol, so..”

Shana told the waitress, “Two Gracefronts - can you MAKE one of those alcoholic?” She nodded, ‘Thank God!” Once the waitress was gone, Shana looked at Grace, “You look great. You look like nothing ever happened to you.”

“Shana… I’m sorry for chinchecking you that day. I thought you deserved it, and maybe you did, maybe you didn’t. But, I regret a lot about those days. I’m not the same person anymore.”

Shana’s eyes flashed something like anger for the first time tonight, as she thought back to the time Grace straight up punched her. But, she waved a hand, “We were both some bitches, but we were entitled to it. Being young is hard, and we were surrounded by others, supposed to be and act a certain way. We had a lot of shit going on and we took some things out on each other, and some things that we took out on each other was well deserved. If i had realized then what I realize now, I wouldn’t have bothered you about that like I did. I’m presuming also that you wouldn’t have bugged me about daddy’s criminal endeavors.”

“I was so foul for that,” Grace admitted. They both laughed. “What brings you to New York? Someone told me that you were in Atlanta.”

“Who told you that?” Shana wondered.

“I think it was in the alumni group. I didn’t stay long. I only joined it to announce that I was out, so that people wouldn’t have to keep asking my parents.”

“It’s funny that somebody had the time to talk about me there, because I CERTAINLY never joined that alumni group. I hated the kids we went to school with. ESPECIALLY Simon’s narcissistic ass.” Shana watched Grace’s entire demeanor change. It was like she had just seen a ghost. “Sorry. I heard you don’t talk about him, but I sure do. Did anybody tell you about what happened at the end of senior year?”

“No. I don’t know anything but that you two were prom king and queen…”

“We weren’t together, if that’s what you thought. I couldn’t stand him. He actually thought I had a crush on him!”

Grace laughed, “Yeah, he told me that a few times. I never saw it myself, but Simon wasn’t great at taking hints. You sort of had to lead him to water.” The waitress brought their first round of drinks to them.

“I led him alright. I told him exactly what I thought about him, and you…” Shana replayed the conversations, including the announcement at the prom, which made Grace instantly terrified for her and she grew more anxious as Shana retold the parking lot incident. “And after that, I just didn’t feel safe. I finished school via distance learning and I high tailed it to ATL as soon as I got my diploma. It’s been lit. You should come through sometime. Atlanta has a very vibrant music scene for Black people.”

“I’m at Julliard right now, so I definitely won’t be moving any time soon, but I did consider spending some time in Atlanta at some point, so maybe. But, you never told me what you’re doing out here.”

“My girlfriend is from New York, so whenever I saw that you were gonna be performing here during a visit, I figured that I’d come say hi.”

“Really?”

“I was wondering for a while if you really didn’t want to talk about Simon, or if you just wanted to be able to tell your side to someone who wasn’t trying to flog you for all the world to see.”

“Oh.”

Shana laughed, “I’m a journalist, Grace. But, I was also around whenever everything happened and I never thought that it happened the way that it was being said. I didn’t think it was fair, even for you.”

“Well, it’s over and done with now. What difference would it make?” Grace asked.

“You think that wherever Simon Laurent is, he’s just letting people be? You think he’s not having angry outbursts on people in Massachusetts? You think he hasn’t set some rival scientist up for failure or terrified some ex girlfriend into obscurity?”

“I think he's a best selling author, ergo a public figure and that if he did do stuff like that, it would come to light, so, it’s not my business or my problem. I didn’t make people believe his stories or want to hear more about them. It’s not my responsibility to discredit him.” Grace gestured for another drink and began to nervously fold a napkin into an origami bird.

Shana sighed and leaned back in her seat. “I just always wonder how many people bad men can reach. I love my dad, don’t get me wrong, but when I started to research all of the people who were hurt by his crime, it made me lose sleep. When women do wrong, we get what’s coming to us, via the media and in the court system. SOMETIMES, we get it worse, for less infractions. Simon did some very illegal things, and pinned most of it on you and the biggest thing he did only hurt you, when it was legit a very serious crime.” Grace was transported to the way she felt whenever Shana showed her that video. “And I helped. I made it worse. I… it was fucked up.” Shana sighed and sat up. “I was hoping that if you wanted someone to report your side, let your truth show, that you might let me be the person to do it. I owe you that much.”

Grace laughed and shook her head, “That would be a career building story. Everybody wants to know what I have to say about Simon, so it’s not like I wouldn’t be doing you a huge favor in giving you that exclusive.”

“You would be! But, it could help both of us.”

“But, more you though. You know… people that I run into, in everyday life - they don’t even ask me about Simon. They tell me that they loved my twerking pancakes remix video, or that they saw me perform last fall and it blew their mind. I never have to think about Simon unless something else triggers it. This wouldn’t do me any favors, but thank you for the drinks. And, as I said in the beginning, I’m sorry.”

“What would I be able to do? Get you something? Find somebody? What would be a payoff enough for you to talk to me about this?”

“Can you find people?” Grace asked.

“I have a lot of resources for finding people.”

“I was in the center with a girl. She’s been in and out of centers and they won’t give me information, even though we were very close. If you can find her for me, I will think about an interview with you about Simon.”

“That’s not very promising…”

“If you can tell me where she is, I’ll give you an interview… about how I currently feel. Not about what happened before. How do I feel about Simon? That's what everybody wants to know about me. Nobody cares about the truth and I don’t want to stir that up. But, if you can tell me where Hazel Doe is, I will tell you anything I have thought about Simon Laurent since I’ve been a free woman.”

Shana snatched the origami bird and scribbled on it, “Okay Hazel D-O-U-G-H?’

“D-O-E, as in Jane.”

“Okay. Where was the last place that you knew of that she was?” Grace opened her phone to give Shana the information. “This… This is a kid, Grace. Do you know how difficult it is to find kids?”

“Yes, I’ve been trying!”

Shana groaned, but she continued taking down the information, “History of abuse or kidnapping? Because that’ll really give us a hard time.”

“Possibly… Look… this kid means a lot to me. If you really feel like something is the least you can do, it would be this.”

Shana nodded and put the napkin in her bag.

❛ IF you weren’t already aware, this is MICHAELA BROOKS! They’re 22 years old and from DECATUR, GA. MICHAELA is often told that they bear a striking resemblance to AYANACHARM but, they don’t see it! They also sound a lot like YUNG MIAMI OF THE CITY GIRLS but that’s just a coincidence.

Throughout her high school years, Michaela was always seen as the center of attention. She had a cute face, gorgeous body, and a sweet accent; she was just the full package. Although a lot of people loved her, they never thought that she would get to the places she is now. Everyone thought that she would take the easy way out. Maybe dancing, doing hair, or scamming. No one ever thought that she could rap or even would go that far. And Michaela fed off that kind of doubt. After seeing her cousin, MELO BROOKS, blow up so fast. She knew that she could and that she was up next. Michaela started off by giving her mixtape out to people around her block but when she didn’t get the feed back that she needed, she decided to try something else. Every time she visited Atlanta, she would link up with her old friend from middle school ASHANTI LEE. As kids the two always would freestyle at lunch and she knew that Ashanti would write raps in her journal so she decided to hit her up with an offer. It took a lot of persuading but eventually, she decided to come aboard. Once the girls started putting out music, the girls got instant feed back and there music was heard around ATL. With all the drama out of her way, her career as a RAPPER was starting to take off and she didn’t think twice about moving back to Savannah. Now that she’s signed with STNE ENT and working more often, she’s starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

ASHANTI LEE ― ( group member ) ― With the girls history, Ashanti knew that she could depend on her and vice versa. Together, the girls knew that they were going to make history and bring something different to the table. Nobody in their state was doing things like they were and they were definitely the first artists to pop off so quick and be able to go out to LA so soon. Their success has brought the good and the bad but they have no intention on letting it get between them making their money and going to the top.

MELO BROOKS ― ( cousin ) ― If there’s anyone who Melo would go to war for, it’s Chaela. Ever since the two were kids, he felt as if he had to protect her. She was always getting herself into trouble so everytime her cousin came down, he had to find a way to get her out of it. Whether it be with friends, enemies or adults of the family, Melo had her back. Family is nothing to come between when it comes to Melo Brooks.

ZENIA TAYLOR ― ( fake friend ) ― During their friendship, Zenia was always there for Chaela and she appreciated it greatly. Taking her to the store, getting her things that she needs, and spending time with her whenever she needed. Chaela really believed that she was her long-term friend but little did she know that Zenia was only around here to get connections around LA. Zenia knew that if Chaela thought that she was her friend that she would pop off instantly and her name would be known around the city.

XAVIER STONE ― ( mentor ) ― One thing that Ashanti couldn’t deny was that the team at STNE ENT were good at selling themselves to potential artists. It was like Xavier knew that she wasn’t sure about her groups place at STNE and if they had their best intentions in mind. Xavier made it his mission to reassure Ashanti and told her that her group would be overseen by him. His interest in The City Girls made her feel comfortable with him and she knew that he wouldn’t mess them over. Ever since their first meeting, Ashanti and Michaela have been reporting to Xavier for assistance when it comes to their music and their creative direction.

#MANAGEMENTMONDAY INTERVIEW: BROOKE HOLLADAY (NO MERCY GLOBAL FOUNDER)

Hey Brooke! Thanks for agreeing to be apart of ‘The Female Hustler’, I can’t wait to hear your story so far!

You are originally from St Louis, what was it like growing up there and is that where your journey in the music industry began?

Yes I'm from STL! Growing up in St Louis for me was a pretty diverse life! I grew up in the Nation of Islam which was a strict lifestyle but yet with my granny raising me in the hood I was able to get around some of her strict rules, I was a little fast, one minute I'm in tap and Jazz class the next I'm selling drugs in the hood at my God sister’s house. I was very cultured but a little hustler at a young age! My grandfather was a famous Jazz musician so I was introduced to music early and my mother was a radio personality! So I had music and the industry all around me.

You are now based in Atlanta, when did you move there and what made you decide to make that move?

Yes I'm based in ATL! I moved to Atlanta in 2009 with Debra Antney whose Waka Flocka’s mother for the first month! She said that she could manage the group June 5th I was in from ST Louis! We was looking for an opportunity for the group and Deb had just blown Nicki Minaj & Gucci Mane up so I gave her a call and we drove down for the meeting then the next week we was living with her and signed.

Was it difficult adjusting to living / building a career in Atlanta compared to St Louis?

It was very difficult living in Atlanta compared to STL because we was royalty in STL and we all had our own nice houses there, but the living arrangements were very different in ATL so it was the ultimate sacrifice! Adjusting to the night life was easy because we fitted right in, we were fly, we attracted the same dope people we would back home! We ran around with the top promoters in Atlanta but it was a struggle making money, that was the only issue because we was really dedicated to our music so we couldn't get a job.

What made you decide to get into the music industry and what was your first role within it?

Lil Kim’s music is when I fell in love with Hip Hop and I wanted a piece of it so I started rapping and I took my word play and delivery serious and I joined a group.

Your Cousin Tiffany Foxx is also your artist that you manage, what made you two decide to work so closely together and is it ever challenging working with family or do you think it works better?

Well Tiff and I was in a group together, things got crazy with Deb so we was going our separate ways and everybody wanted Tiffany to go solo out of the three girls in the group anyway and she basically knew I was dope behind the scenes because I ultimately did everything for us anyway so we was like if she go solo I'll manage her! It's not hard for us as family, it's better it's us against them! Them is whoever not us.

The legendary Queen Bee, Lil Kim took Tiffany under her wing as her artist and they have featured on a couple of tracks together how did the two of them come to work together?

Yes the legendary Lil Kim co-signed Tiffany! Kim’s brother (Chris Bo Jones) was flirting with me at Lil Kim’s concert in STL, mind you we already met Lil Kim before when we sent her a Rolls Royce phantom and a chef to show her we respected her as the Queen Bee in our city so she remembered that but her brother made it official! He called me when he and Kim was in Atlanta, we came over to the house they was staying at and Kim came down in the basement heard Tiffany’s song Jay Z and the rest was history or should I say Herstory! She said “Tiff that's you spitting like that?” and we partnered up that week! Thanks to Chris, he and I never really hit it off in terms of dating but we became business partners.

Was artist management something you always saw yourself getting into?

I never thought about being a manager but my personality since a kid was connecting the dots and taking on people's problems as well as being a good listener and the best negotiator! So the transition was easy as I already was managing things, my ex of 10 years said “your calling is management B” lol he said “you negotiate about making a sandwich for me shit!” Lol it was so easy!

What has been your proudest achievement as a manager so far?

My greatest high was partnering up with my female rap idol Lil Kim I couldn't believe that I did that! That was huge.

You also manage Swift, another very talented artist famous for his hit single 'Pull Up', how did working with him come about?

Yes I manage Swift! Chubbie Baby and I worked on a few things, that's my brother we fight, we argue but he came and got me for Swift and said “here is your first signed to a label act!” He said “Brooke I believe in you, you can be the next Sylvia Rhone” the rest was history or should I say Herstory.

For those not familiar with Swift what can they expect from his sound and what has he got coming up?

Swift is very dope and well- rounded, he does every type of genre of music! He went to the school of arts; he is really coming with R&B and Hip Hop.

You recently launched your artist booking agency, No Mercy Global, tell us a bit about that and the services you provide / clients you currently have.

Yes I went through a pretty dark time in my life last year and I was watching Queen of the South and she told her protégée that you can’t show No Mercy to men in this industry because they will take you for weak! That stuck with me!

So I'm dating this guy that came around in this very dark moment and on our first date we’re furniture shopping for him but, I spent the whole time on the phone booking artists! He didn't find it rude, he actually liked it and every day we spent together it was the same thing, me on my phone booking, negotiating and one day after 6months of that he said “B you need your own office and you need to start a booking agency! You need to take it to the next level, let people pull up on you and take it seriously” next he said “I got you, go find the office” and the rest was history/ or should I say Herstory. I asked him should I call it Mini Mogul or NoMercy and he said “No motherfucking Mercy that's powerful B”!

As for as clients I can book anybody if they available!

What challenges did you face launching a new company whilst juggling managing two artists?

The challenges I juggled are focusing on me real quick to even get in the mode of sitting down, going there but I'm all over the place, I pay rent for an office I'm barley at because I'm moving around! But I'm getting a team to focus on all the areas of the company and my artists.

For anybody wanting to start their own company what advise would you give them?

Make sure it's your passion, be business savvy and make sure you study what you are into.

Are there any other artists on your radar you would love to work with?

I want to work with the Goat Jay Z and I will work with him not sure how but I will so you remember I told you that!

You call yourself the 'mini mogul' how did that name come about?

Mini Mogul came from my long-time friend Johnnie Cabell he said “Brooke I'm Big Deal and you Lil Big Deal” and then he said “you like the Mini mogul they don't see you coming you 4"11 and don't pose as a threat”.

The music industry is still a very male dominated industry, what advice would you give to any young females coming up that aim to get to high position within the music business?

Yes the industry will forever be male dominated so you have to keep your legs closed! No man in the industry can ever say he slept with me, not one! I pride myself on that! That's why they respect me! They try though all the time and it has caused some bad vibes and has taken me longer because I will not sell my soul.

As you know the site is called 'The Female Hustler' which we definitely see you as! What is your definition of a 'female hustler' ?

My definition of a female hustler is one that bares humility and does what it takes to eat without compromising her integrity! I'm always able to sleep at night with my decisions.

Finally let us know what you have coming up that people should look out for and any key events / shows your artists have that people should go check out!

I'm building my own label, I’m also excited about Tiffany Foxx’s overseas tour and taking NoMercy Global to the next level! What I'm happy about most I can't speak on but it was inspired from watching The Defiant Ones so you have to stay tuned!

SHAQ Dishes on Miami Music Week’s Best Event – Shaq’s Fun House

Shaq’s Fun House has only ever happened twice before, and already it’s one of the most-talked about events of Miami Music Week as it prepares to make its third appearance. Last year, Shaq, aka DJ Diesel, called upon Diplo, Steve Aoki, A-Trak, Carnage, Nervo, Alan Walker, and Cheat Codes to bring the noise, and this year will feature an even bigger array of artists according to Shaq himself.

Your EDM caught up with Shaq ahead of the festivities, two weeks from tomorrow, March 29. We were desperate to know more about his background as a DJ and what made him think of Shaq’s Fun House in the first place. We also wanted to know, with all of the crazy things the Fun House already has, what didn’t make it in… the answer is amazing.

Everyone knows you as Shaq, the basketball player. But you’ve mentioned in interviews before that you have been DJing since you were 14. What was your first introduction to electronic music and how did you start spinning?

I used to cut neighbors’ grass, walk dogs, and scrap together cash to buy records and my turntables at a pawn shop. I have been hooked on music ever since I was a young kid, but back then I was all about Rap. TomorrowWorld 2014 was a milestone event that changed my perspective on music forever. It was on a massive farm and I came over a huge hill then boom 100,000 happy people going crazy having the time of their lives. I saw Skrillex and Steve Aoki and I was like what is this music… I just loved the energy! I met my manager Joe at TomorrowWorld and I begged him for a slot the next year. That is how DJ Diesel was born and I have not looked back since.

What prompted you to start Shaq’s Fun House?

This is not a nightclub or some huge festival. My Fun House brings together the best DJ’s in the world with carnival elements, circus performers, an open bar, amazing food and much more. Honestly I was getting bored of the same clubs & festivals over and over at music week…I wanted to create my own event totally different that is just all about FUN. Last year I called up Diplo and said I need you Wes…Steve Aoki…Diesel needs your energy…Carnage…bring the heat!! It was crazy everyone just ended up playing back to back all night till sunrise. This year I partnered with JBL to make the Fun House even bigger. I promise you this will be the best lineup yet featuring 8 of the best DJ’s in the world. Get your tickets soon folks this thing is sure to sell out!

What’s been your favorite show you’ve played so far?

To me DJ’ing in front of a huge crowd brings is like a game 7. I’ve done many amazing shows but Lost Lands and Tomorrowland have to be my 2 favorites. I practice a lot before each set and really get competitive out there..my goal is always to ignite more head bangers than any other artist out there.

Now that you’re putting out original music, like your new track with NGHTMRE & Lil Jon, can we expect more in 2019?

NGHTMRE is my Larry Bird of EDM and Lil Jon is a longtime friend. BANG was a ton of Fun to work on and we got tons more in the works! I’ll have some remixes and solo originals out soon but there are a lot more DIESEL coming in 2019. There’s a ton of shows to still release too… I just announced a show with Dillon Francis at Red Rocks, I have a big Vegas announcement coming soon, and I am really looking forward to Tomorrowland & Ibiza this summer.

What were some of the original ideas for Shaq’s Fun House that didn’t make the cut?

So I own 2 white tigers. I have a guy in Vegas that looks after them for me and he treats them real well. I thought it may be cool to bring them to Miami, but my team advised against it for safety reasons. What do you guys think should I bring em? The car ride for them would be really long or can we put them on a plane?

What was it like to have your Fun House in Atlanta for the Super Bowl?

I am an ATL native and live here now so when Super Bowl 2019 was in Atlanta I called up my managers and told them Shaq’s Fun House.. Super Bowl.. Atlanta… let’s make it legendary and we did. I recruited my boys Diplo, Tiesto, Migos, Lil Jon, T-Pain and we threw one hell of a party. Beyond the music we had Cirque Du Soleil, Waffle House, STK Steakhouse, the JBL crate, and tons more amazing attractions.

How do you see the Fun House brand growing in 2 years? 5 years?

We’re going international baby! They’re way too many amazing sports and music combo opportunities overseas and you know the DIESEL is going to make it happen. I’ve been blessed to see the world, play for Team USA, destroy mainstages in other countries and the Fun House is going to be everywhere.

Summer 17 necessities : Maja’s Very Own Organic Mosquito Repellent

“Pretend I’m not here” I told Maja as I placed my nikon in her face (Yes, flash and all). After she posed for me while still holding her wine glass, (yes, kindred spirits) I focused my attention on her products. It was a Sunday afternoon, and she helped me arrange the products into a flatlay, flipping switches on and off to cast the perfect lighting. It had been raining cats and dogs on and off since the spring in Atlanta, and the constant heat and humidity created the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to flourish. The mosquitoes were clearly out here eating and living good while we either a) hide out indoors b) get bit up c) try chemical bug sprays and still get bit up and now also stink in addition to being bit up and itchy. Those worries are now a thing of the past, thanks to Maja’s Very Own. Now if you’ve been here before, you know I’m no stranger to chemical free living (in most ways, still working on others) so I was over the moon when Maja let me purchase some of her MVO organic mosquito repellent before the shop launched. I tested it the best way I know , I used it when I went to Florida for mother’s day weekend (Florida mosquitoes are a whole different level of terrible). Not only did I return to Atlanta unbitten, but my family loved it too, mostly because it didn’t have that yucky chemical smell and stickiness most repellents give.

Maja’s Very Own, is the true definition of an entrepreneurial effort. She is a one woman show, from expertly mixing her butters and oils, down to the labels that she designed herself. I had purchased before the labels were created, so I enjoyed admiring the intricate flowers the California native artist created. They are simple and effective, much like the product itself.

Tell me about how Maja's very Own started.

My thoughts of developing a mosquito repellent started when I knew I’d be moving back to the South. I lived in South Carolina for 8 years and there I found out I was highly allergic. Living there was miserable because 4-5 months out the year I couldn’t step out the house passed a certain hour in fear of being bit. I would swell so bad, and I even developed MRSA from being bitten before. I was determined to enjoy my new move because it was a new chapter in my life, and I didn’t want to limit myself. So I did my fav thing ever and google researched anything I could regarding mosquitoes and how to naturally repel them. I knew there had to be plants that worked, I hated the smell of OFF! And anything with DEET. Even if they add a “flowery” smell to those products, it smells horrible. It’s nothing but chemicals. I’m a self-proclaimed black hippy lol and want nothing to do with such things. I made my first batch summer ’16, it was a small personal bottle just to try things out. I was my own guinea pig and saw it worked for a little while but I still would get bit and would have to load up on benedryl to avoid using my Epi-Pen. But summer 17 was going to be my summer. I started my health journey, finally settled into southern living and really wanted to see what ATL had to offer. By doing more research I found better oils and remedies that might help so I threw some things together and would try them out and finally found a mix that worked and smelled good. Fortunately this time around friends and family tested it to make sure it worked for different people who have a different body chemistry than I do. Whala ! Maja’s Very Own. I wanted to have fun with it, so making it wouldn’t feel like or become a job, I already have one of those. That’s why there are Drake references in my description, someone told me I was “too urban” for those but clearly they didn’t get it was an MVO ting ayyyee lmao plus who doesn’t love a little Aubrey Drake in their life?… life is to enjoy and why not enjoy what you do?

When you realized you could turn your own personal remedy into a business, did you have any fears along the way ? If so , how did you overcome them ?

I originally wasn’t going to sell it or even mention it. It was the push from family that gave me the courage to start bottling it. I have a hard time putting myself out there I’m very introverted unless I know you personally. It worked so well for family I was like fuck it why not, what do I have to lose? Yes, it’s pricey but not only will I be helping myself but others. As soon I made mention of it on my FB people were messaging me telling me they have the same problem and they hate the mass produced products as well.

My main fear was the cost to do everything, because everything I used I made sure was organic, pure and naturally sourced. We all know organic isn’t cheap, but I took the leap anyway because I believe in what I’m doing. I truly believe that as long as you try to do what you whole heartedly believe in you’ll never fail because you tried. You come out a winner because you learned something by simply trying. Plus i'm beyond fortunate because my family supports everything I do, I couldn't ask for anything more than that. they're my cheerleaders even when I fail, they understand the importance of being an entrepreneur, especially being a woman and black, how important that is. I want my brothers see me try and fail or succeed, and know they don't have to keep working for someone else funding another's dream. You can put time into your own and build an empire. It'll take time, and i'm not saying I'll be hugely successful, but until my last breath I'm going to use the gifts God gave me and keep trying. Just having my younger brothers tell me they're going to step out of their comfort zone to try something because they see me trying is everything, or having my mom and grandmothers tell me they're proud of me having the courage to constantly put myself out there. I don't care if I sell nothing else,lol that's the most rewarding thing i've ever experienced. I'll forever submit my artwork to galleries or shows and keep making stuff in the kitchen just because of those things right there.

What are some of the challenges you faced initially as a small business owner?

Money… lmao point blank, everything else comes pretty easy for me. At a random job I had I learned design so I design all my labels, thank you inserts and banners for my Etsy. I’m also an artist so I pay serious attention to detail, almost borderline OCD lol

Also because of that I kind of get anxiety wondering if people like what I’m sending them. Along with the product I send a general thank you, but I also send a handwritten note that I appreciate them and I believe in giving back to the Earth we take from daily. I enclose wildflowers, lavender and a few other seeds for them to plant personally or just spread somewhere so in a small way we help stabilize our bee population because we need them. Without the bees I won’t be able to continue making the product even if it’s just for myself and never sell another bottle, the fruits we eat or anything for that matter. We have to give back in some type of way, it's small but it’s something. My black hippy ish lmao

Do you plan on expanding your product line in the future ?

I do actually last summer on top of making me a spray I also made repellent infused jewelry which I was hella surprised it worked! I forgot to spray myself and just had on my bangles and earrings and never got bit. Also beside the spray I also have a rub I made. I think people tend to shy away from the rub because it’s the summer but in the summer we still need lotion with this hard ATL water lol. I use that in place of my lotion everyday just as extra protection because I myself have even forgotten to spray myself down before walking out and regret it as soon as I feel a slight burn then welt somewhere. It's lighter than you’d think and moisturizes your skin so well because of the Shea and coconut oil. Still smells really good which a main focus was. You can wear either spray or rub along w your fav oil or perfume and it won’t be overbearing. But yea jewelry is the next move.

As the protagonist continues through the game, they obviously need to face some Gym Leaders, so here are the first four! Gyms work a little differently in Atles; instead of there being a set order for them, you have an option which of two Gyms to do first between the Tech and Art Districts, which will have ramifications that I have not yet made up depending on how you do the gyms in what order. Anyway, here are the Gym Leaders and the cities in which their Gyms are located! Designs for Cassandra and Meridian were made by @tamawu, a very good friend and a very good artist!

Tech District Gym Leaders:

Wayne: The Fairy-Type Trainer

Wayne always had an affinity for children, in the sense that he enjoyed the sheer happiness they got out of the simplest of joys. As such, he opened up a Toy Store in Zobe City, and with the help of his Pokemon, he creates custom-made toys from scratch to sell to families. To certain children who find joy in Pokemon Battles, he is also the first Gym Leader in the Tech District, so if asked, he is more than willing to battle and give to those worthy the Toy Badge. While he does see how Pokemon can be used for entertainment, he finds it less cruel to just use toys as a substitute, so if it came down to it, he would support Team Progress over Team Scene.

Zobe City

In Zobe City, people are free to start up whatever small business they wish to have without the fear of too much competition. There aren’t big chains, greedy monopolies or CEOs that want to overtake whatever they want, just a bunch of locally-owned shops that allow their owners and employees to make a decent living. The ambiance is very calm and serene, as the sounds of industry happen far, far away from here.

Meridian: The Ghost-Type Trainer

In Meridian’s hey day, he was a big time company owner that dominated the HM/TM business. His company was predicted to never die out and he believed it, taking every risky business proposition offered to him in order to further his own profits. Trinity City, his hometown and locale of his business, was a thriving jewel thanks to his company, but once the Ride Pokemon business came along and proved more convenient, his profits crashed and his business went bankrupt. He fell into a deep depression, as the city that he cared for so deeply went into ruin without the backbone of his company, so he decided to pass the time with something else: Pokemon Training. His specialty in Ghost Types made him a fearsome foe, so he decided to open a Gym in the abandoned store he used to own and offer the Abandoned Badge to those who defeat him. He believes deeply in Team Progress, as he believes they’re his only chance at finding that shine in Trinity City that he once saw.

Trinity City

Trinity City used to be a bustling metropolis, full of life and energy that was fueled by big business. Its residents lived luxurious lives, its businesses were huge and money seemed to be never-ending in supply. Its backbone was the HM/TM Business, which was strong and seemingly unbreakable... until the Ride Pokemon business came along and decided to settle in a different city. Trinity City’s business slowed, then nearly stopped, causing the shining jewel to lose most of its luster. Many of the businesses were abandoned, and most of its residents moved to find better opportunities. Trinity City is now little more than a ghost town.

Arts District Gym Leaders:

Cassandra: The Ice-Type Trainer

When it comes to making Art, nobody’s cooler than Cassandra, in more ways than one! Each day, she makes a trek towards Renelen Mountain to gather ice with her Pokemon, then using them as models, she carves entire life-sized sculptures out of the giant ice blocks. Her art gathered her enough recognition to open a sculpture gallery, where the prestigious come to observe and sometimes even buy what she makes. For those looking for a fight with the legendary Cassandra, he also happens to be the Gym Leader in Sunty City, where she combines her strength with her powerful Ice Types Pokemon to fight for the honor of having the Sculpture Badge. Even though her Pokemon are used to gather the Ice, she feels that enslaving them in workshops are wrong, so she would much rather see Team Scene rise into power than Team Progress.

Sunty City

Sunty City was named a bit ironically, considering that it’s one of the coldest cities in Atles. Artists flock here, thinking that the harsher conditions will give them more inspiration for whatever medium they wish to partake in. From the center of town, the buildings were designed in such a way that you can see the Sun setting perfectly over the Twin Mountains, so you would likely see many painters in City Center at that time.

Marquee: The Steel-Type Trainer

At age 16, Marquee got her first job in the Tech District, caring for Steel-type Pokemon in a factory. It was a fairly simple job; she mended their wounds, made sure they were still motivated to work, just generally standard medical work. However, she began to realize that certain Pokemon were drawn to the music that she played on her breaks, and some were even able to recreate it. It was at that moment that she realized that Steel-type Pokemon didn’t just have to be relegated to workers, but some of them instead wanted to make music! She gathered some of the Pokemon that wanted to join her and fled to Moore City to open up her own Dance Club, where she and her Pokemon perform original musical pieces for a consistently huge audience. That’s not to say she’s not powerful; she and her Pokemon also offer Gym Battles in her club, and if you beat her, you win her custom made Rave Badge. Marquee’s dream is to see Pokemon chase their own personal dreams, not just be relegated to being used for whatever they seem they could be used for, and she thinks that Team Scene will allow people to realize this dream.

Moore City

Moore City is the place to go if you want to become a musician. All types of music are accepted there, and theatres hold weekly open mic nights for rising stars. Even the Pokemon that live there find a song, and you can hear Pokemon gleefully singing and screeching and calling out to each other everywhere you go. Every musically-gifted person’s dream is to live in Moore City, because those who want to make it live in Moore City.

So I called the owner of the broker company who told me that he would gladly backdate the policy upon the notion that AIG would accept it and they said that they would. Hmm hey, so ive been thinking about it today and I really don't want to tell you…..but that's not because i don't want to tell you, its because im scared to tell you....I dont want to lose you or put a burden on you... I want you to believe me and to take what happened seriously and as something that was bad….but i don't know if it was.... and i don't want to place those kind of hopes on you. So im not really sure what i should do. I really...want to tell you....when I remembered everything...I was like “I want to hug him and tell him what happened and be accepted” but......again I dont want to place that on you.... Cause if i don't tell you you will think its cause you can't help me and that's the opposite of the truth….and if i do tell you you’ll think its cause you forced me into it and that's not true either….anyway….im gonna post this and leave it under the cut….you can decide if you want to read it or not and that way...you did not force me into it, cause i didn't actually show it to you okay? Anyway what happened…..so when I was born Davida fell in love with me, or so they say. But I didn't really know who they were till I was about 9, still they romanticized me for those nine years. By the time we did met and get to know each other I was well, 9. Anyway, they were my tutor and we grew close, they were safe and kind and selfless and I liked being around them. But but a little later they ended up saying to me “you know I don't think we are cousins (we are actually cousins) we are more like siblings.” and I didn't really know what to say. I liked just being cousins, especially cause that was what we actually were….but the way they said it sounded so hopeful and almost pleading I agreed and yeah started calling them my sibling. I think that was the first thing i did with them that I didn't want to do.

Later they started having a lot of nightmares and Id come in and try and comfort them and ended up sleeping in the bed with them. And then the next night they asked me to do so again and….yeah, then after a bit when I asked to stop sleeping in the same bed as them and they cried a lot so….i said ��nm” and kept sleeping in the same bed as them….another thing I didnt want to do.....

a lot of “fights” happened and looking back, I realize its because they had made up a story about us being in a relationship even tho they had never had that conversation with me and, I was 9 and they were 18 (19?)....Anyway if I ever expressed not wanting to be physically close to them, they would cry and ask me what was wrong with them and tell me how much they loved me. I even remember once telling them that if they stopped touching me so much, id touch them more. By this just like you know hugs or resting a hand o them or a head or stuff like that.

Anyway…..things kept getting worse and worse and i was so confused what was happening….they started telling me that they could see the future and that in the future we are married and have children and that we are a family. And that they had dreams and in the dreams i was there and that we fucked and stuff. They told me on dream were i fucked them with a dildo (btw i had no clue what a dildo was cause i was like NINE) but when i didn't express happiness about this they cried and questioned me…

most nights we’d stay up till like 3am talking….(tho they were the only one talking), and crying. They spent hours upon hours crying about it. I remember once I fell asleep, like sitting up cause i was so exhausted and they woke me up and were really angry that I had fallen asleep.

Anyway….this sort of thing continued for a while and I ended up trying to combat it by telling them “I just want to be your sibling” but that only made things worse, cause then they would cry and say “but then everyone will think im fucking my sibling” to which….I was confused cause IM NINE and we didn't have any kind of sexual relationship….I think they had convinced them self that we were fucking and in a sexual relationship but….it was only in their head….anyway….it really got bad later I think I was 10 by this point? Which makes them like 19 or 20? And…..yeah I was lying on the bed and they climbed on me like...straddled me…..but leaned down so their lips were by my ear…..and like….told me how “sensitive” I was when being tickled, so I must be really sensitive turning sex. And that they would be really good at fucking me, and that they could force me to cum and make it feel really good, but that im so sensitive they would have to drug me first to keep me still enough. anyway…..later we went on a trip so it was just me and them and….I don't remember exactly what happened but….we were lying down next to each other and once again we (they) had been talking for so long and they had been crying and talking about me being their spouse and all and how we would get married and they love me so much and that I love them too (but i didn't not like that) and...anyway….I finally asked what they “wanted of me” and they told me to get on top of them….which like….i didn't know what was gonna happen….we like had tickle fights a lot so….I kind of assumed it was gonna be that, to lighten to mood and all and….anyway they grabbed me by the top of my pants and moved me up and down against them, without saying anything, it all happened so fast….I didn't know what was happening…..I was so scared madhu…..i couldnt speak….I couldn't do anything….I just was frozen, being pulled and pushed against them…..I felt like screaming but….my throat was so tight...I could even blink….I was terrified…..lol….it….felt….you know….it started to feel…..something and that managed to snap me out of being so scared and like a fucking loser I stuttered out “s-s-s-s-s-s-ssts-st-sto,-stop” and they did….and i don't remember how I moved but somehow I ended up by the river and...everything felt...numb...like I was dead….like the world hated me and cut me free of it….they were there too….they had followed me….and they asked if I cum…(I hadn't)....but I just started crying….anyway….

later I was hallucinating (daydreaming?) alot...there was this man in a tree, he was so beautiful, but he just looked at me and shook his head and walked away….I remember asking them later “did I kill her?” (i was still using she / her) and then breaking into tears again lmao. Anyway…..they kept wanting to talk to me and all but I really didn't feel safe around them anymore, like more so. And so I tried sitting in public to talk but they said they weren't comfortable doing so, cause someone might hear, and so I agreed to go back in private. And whatever I played it off as if nothing had happened….but really i was just trying to manipulate the situation so that id be safe, I knew it was pedophilia and that they could go to jail if I talked so I was scared they would do something to keep me quiet (they didn't) but the whole drive home I was just playing music and singing so that their mind would be occupied with that….

anyway we never talked about that and….their obsession with us dating continued till like….last year…. Just last year they said we should go one a double date and I had to remind them we aren't dating and they started to cry again….still to this day they talk about how good I look….and how sexy or hot I am….and...idk we have at this point had a conversation about how that kind of thing really scares me and really isn't good for me…..but they keep doing it…I know they regret what happened all of it, but they keep doing things….they keep touching me and saying stuff about me and….I just….feel disgusting….I don't want to be near them.

Even in that video call with you, they were laying their head one me and all….I hate that…. I don't want them to do that….im so confused and so grossed out by myself and….i've told them not to touch me….but they still touch me….I mean...they are a pedo…..but they are also such a good person...and I do care about them….just….im so scared madhu….im so scared of them…

I don't know when they are going to cry and accuse me or touch me….I feel like its all my fault...that if only i could love them and fuck them their life would be better….but i can't do that...i can't be that person….I don't want to have sex with them..

Day 5 Trying not to take stuff for granted, being grateful

I woke up this morning having to shit really bad because I ate a whole all-star meal at Waffle House with two glasses of OJ. I couldn’t decide if I should shit in the airport parking garage, find a bathroom near the airport or drive to a gas station bathroom. I ended up trying to find a bathroom in the garage - NONE. So I drove as fast as possible to the nearest hopefully clean gas station. I shit, I took a bird bath, brushed my teeth, combed my hair, took a couple bathroom pics with my laptop, and then cleaned my car. A laundry mat is right next to the gas station so I instantly thought of starting the day off with dancing but realized there is a worker in there and its kinda weird dancing in a place where people work. Instead, I researched everywhere I was thinking about going today with my GPS and headed to my first spot, Centinnel park. A park in between all the places near downtown Atlanta I wanted to explore. I tried to find Parking that was super cheap or free but couldn’t find that. I circled around the park about twice until I blew a tire trying to circle it my third time. Instantly drove to a gas station, thought I was shit out of luck but didn’t lose my cool, searched for the spare tire - FOUND IT. I searched for people to help me instead of wasting time pretending to know what I was doing. I spotted out two different construction worker men who looked like they were going to work, I asked if they could help. One was Mexican and seemed like he couldn’t speak English, he told me he was waiting on someone and about to go to work but never left even after I left, the other guy was black and told me he had to go to work but by the time I finally got someone to help me, he was getting into a car with a odly skinny woman with stray hair and her hands tightened around a few bucks. Finally a guy in the store who ended up actually on the job as a Doritos delivery truck person, helped me and joined him a old black guy with a fat red sports car. After that I Called a bunch of tire places, found one, and headed there. while driving, I listened to Karinas groovy and dance Soundcloud playlists and found some gems, my favorite now to be ____. Finally after some wrong turns on Atlanta butchered roads, I found the tire place got my tired done in twenty minutes, while that was happening I visited a photo place that had film cameras and lenses and found a Nikon battery charger! Now I can take pics! I mightt just stay an extra day in ATL. After getting my charger and fixing my car, went to search the area nad they have a lot of African foods here but I have already spent so much money can’t do that so I sit outside working on my laptop liked I had planned to do later in the day but I figured why not get this anxiety out the way since they paid me. Shit they dont have wifi. What the next stop? But first let me gut this blunt, through the paper in my bad then head to my car ( the spot where I do all my research, the lab) and Search and refinalize my days plan. I head straight to little five points, I park in the neighborhood for da free. I roll a half joint because I broke the paper when I threw it in my bag, grab all my shit and walk into the nearest, cafe or coffee shop. ITs 130 thats how Ive been starting my days and Im cool with it. Im in this place called Brewhouse cafe but its looks nothing more than a bar, a European soccer bar , which is pretty dope to me. I want to go to a European bar just to watch soccer and be a part of the hype honestly. Or an actually soccer match that would be awesome. Ive been doing my work now for about three hours but it feels like 5. But im watching soccer and eating sunflower seeds so im a be alright! So finally got out at the actual 5th hour and I walked through the town and ATLANTA IS A MAGNIFICENT GLAMOUROUS CLUTTER its like my closet theres so much different things that you can go through. So I went through every single store out of 5 stores until it was 630 and time for me to head to the movies. I went through a crystal store which was out of my comfort zone because I dont really believe in that and I was so about not being a non believe. Before we talk about the stores lets talk bout how all outside theres a line of homeless people, Atlanta has a problem with that but its okay., anyways, so either the homeless people are selling stuff or staring not a problem though, but anyways so most of them areselling crystals or smoking weed illegally doing card tricks for people its like Las Vegas strip for the needy. Anyways, I goo into the asecond store and I dont remember verbatim what the second store was so inn just gonna go off of what I remember. There was a medical marijuana store, a record store, a vintage thrift shop, a African store, and a store with a question mark on top of it with a sign on the door saying the hours are maybe this and maybe that and it was awesome to se that. I love this place, s after many many many pictures, I realize that I found my favorite record store and they sell a lot of comics here. Its time to go, I go to the car smoke that half a blunt as. I lose my way to the movie theatre. When I get to the movie theatre I realize this is my favorite movie theater because the shit they show is so fiucking underground but so fucking good. So I saw this movie called the killing of a sacred deer and its one of my favorites, its thriller like split and I realized those are my favorite movies. On to the next movie theater - yes next movie theatre -yes Im splurging- sue me. So its drive in first of all - second of all - I got in for free by going through the exit, the security was laid up against the ticket box looked me in the eye and i swear he shrugged, anyways I get in and find the station and boom im sitting there watching Boo 2! - good ass movie by the way, I LOVE MADEA FOR A REEASON SOME FUNNY ASS SHIT - by the way I bought some more blunts on the way to the second movie theatre at a gas station and heated up some ramen and popcorn - im set. So im high as shit laughing and killing the game with life. I leave hungry as shit and trying to finda place that doesnt cost to sleep. I find PONCE - a cool looking neighborhood thats modern, I look for a parking garage- gotta pay, neighborhood - shady, I finally go to this apt complex with a security camera but loose parkinhg, before I actually park, I go to find some food - =instantly I look up mcdonalds and go to just get some fries because aim on a budget. FUCKKK theres a local restraint HEL YEA BUDGET OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW, I go and its fucking awesome its called THE COOKOUT and I dont know if its just me being high or what but their food is fucking amazing. I order - burger, corn dog, fries and shake for like 7 bucks. I park in this drive in style parking lot set up the office and boom im in heaven once again. Doing what I want, then a guy passes by my car and open the door with one hand in his pocket - bitch im out - no way am I gonna open a door with onehand in my pocket unless I have gun- later I discovered its pretty cold he has a reasonable reason but I couldn’t do it. So now im in the “home” lot nad eating watching thats 70s show cause I missed it and im on the last seaozon of the office - gotta calm down. I go to sleep after eating and boom a day was made.

In case you didn’t stay up, the Sixers faced the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night and snapped a losing streak with a 109-105 victory. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid looked spectacular with the latter leading all scorers with 32 points. Robert Covington, who should be expecting a big pay day this week, dropped 31 points. Simmons logged his eighth career double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Off the bench, Willie Reed had 9 points, but fouled out for the Clippers. He was guarding Joel Embiid and wasn’t memorable for the big man:

He’s putting up numbers unheard of for a first-year contributor and doing so without any semblance of a jump shot.

According to Synergy Sports, Simmons has taken 18 jumpers all season, and made just seven of them. What’s more, he’s 0-for-3 from beyond the arc.

So how is it possible for a rookie to efficiently put up over 17 points per contest without a jump shot as part of his arsenal?

For starters, it helps that Simmons is shooting 63.8 percent from within five feet of the rim, the 10th-best rate among players with at least 40 shot attempts in that zone.

His mixture of brute strength and explosiveness near the basket borders on unfair, but when you also factor in his craftiness as a ball-handler, it becomes truly insensitive towards the opposition.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have always been one in the same for as long as many of us can remember. Well if the outspoken owner continues to feud with Roger Goodell and the NFL, he may be forced out of ownership:

A league source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution & Bylaws. Specifically, Section 8.13 authorizes the Commissioner to determine that an owner “has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football.” If the Commissioner believes the available sanction (a $500,000 fine) is “not adequate or sufficient,” the Commissioner may refer the issue to the NFL’s Executive Committee, which has the power to compel “[c]ancellation or forfeiture of the franchise in the League of any member club involved or implicated,” with a directive to sell the team.

It’s obviously an extreme outcome, and it surely would trigger years of litigation. But the possibility has emerged primarily because Jones has opted to take family business outside the family. As the source explained it, the primary affront comes from the belief among owners that Jones instigated Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter to disparage the NFL, blaming league leadership for ratings declines and, in turn, a reduction in Papa John’s revenues.

Producer Will Packer on 'Girls Trip,' Discovering Kevin Hart and the Myth of Black Films at the Box Office

“It really is time people realize that good content is good content,” says the ‘Girls Trip’ producer as he also discusses the future for midbudget features and how he gets A-listers into ensembles.

“It keeps me out of the bubble,” explains Will Packer of Atlanta, the place he has called home for the past two decades. The producer, 43, has built a lucrative career producing midbudget movies with African-American talent — including Think Like a Man, Straight Outta Compton and the Ride Along series — for an audience base that Hollywood has historically ignored. He partially attributes this success to his city, saying, “It gives me the perspective of people who aren’t in the industry.” After graduating from Florida A&M, Packer moved to Atlanta to co-found his first production company, Rainforest Films, whose debut film was the microbudget 2000 erotic thriller Trois, which grossed more than $1 million in only a handful of theaters. Packer now splits his time between ATL, where his wife and four children — ages 13, 15, 17 and 22 — live and Los Angeles, where his Universal-based Will Packer Productions is rooted. He’s currently gearing up for the July 21 release of the comedy Girls Trip, starring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith.

How has Atlanta changed now that more L.A. productions are moving in?

It’s a double-edged sword. There are a lot of folks who worked with myself and others to get the tax incentive passed, and it’s great that I can work at home. The other side is that I used to fly from L.A. to Atlanta and not see any Hollywood folks. Now, first class looks like the lobby at the SoHo House.

When did you first become aware of your frequent star Kevin Hart?

My oldest son, who was a teenager at the time, him and his buddies were watching these Kevin Hart bootleg videos over and over again. I have a strict “no bootleg” policy in my house, and they were all like, “We don’t know where else to get them!” I go: “First of all, I am sure you can buy these movies somewhere, so that’s no excuse. Second, what the hell is this, and why are you guys watching it over and over again and laughing like it’s the first time you have ever seen it?”

How do you grab on to a talent like Hart or Idris Elba before they go supernova?

I think that goes back to being outside the box, thinking and having outside interfaces. With Idris Elba, I was able to work with him right after he got off The Wire — his first theatrical feature was a small indie I made called The Gospel. Kevin had a fan base that he was building among a demo that had a lot of his movies primarily on bootleg. The interesting thing about that is, you aren’t seeing those numbers in a quantifiable way, so it doesn’t translate to revenue, which is why a lot of people in L.A. weren’t aware. With both, they were hotter outside of L.A. than they were in L.A. The same thing was true of the Steve Harvey book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man that I produced the 2012 movie adaptation of. Before he was on the New York Times best-seller list and before he was doing Oprah interviews, his book was being passed around in beauty salons and nail shops.

How do you get big-name talent to commit to large ensembles, like Girls Trip?

With Girls Trip, Regina Hall hadn’t been in a role like this before, where the story is centered on her and her character, so I told her she should be in the anchor position in the ensemble. For Queen Latifah and Jada, that was very much about approaching them together to reunite, because they haven’t worked together since Set It Off 20-plus years ago. I approach casting not like a net you just throw out, but by approaching each individual talent one by one in the very specific way that is necessary to get that particular talent.

What would it take for studios to start making midbudget features again?

You are either doing a tentpole and swinging for the fences or you are making [a film] for next to nothing, with very little risk. For me, with so much fragmentation across the landscape of content, with so many distribution options, if you are not making big, four-quadrant movies, you have to be making them for an audience — doesn’t have to be a big audience. But as the theatrical window gets shorter and someday collapses, which is probably inevitable, that is when it will change. Part of the reason midrange movies don’t make as much sense is because the P&A costs are so high. Once there is an active model in place, where films are released theatrically and day-and-date on streaming platforms, it will change the amount of money necessary to market that type of film.

What did you think of the industry reaction to the box-office success of Hidden Figures and Get Out?

I have a lot of articles and clippings of my movies that opened at number one, and the headline is always very similar: “Insert-Film-Here Surprises at No. 1, Comes Out of Nowhere!” I get a kick out of it, but it really is time people realize that good content is good content, and an audience is an audience. Hidden Figures didn’t get to its number only on an African-American female audience. Get Out didn’t get to its number only on an African-American horror audience. Both of those films were good films, and you had audiences who were not at all held back by the fact that African-Americans were the lead roles. It is starting to change so that we’re not pigeonholed by our casting. The next barrier is the international marketplace. That will be the next domino to fall in terms of films with African-American actors truly being treated the same as other films.

Why does the notion that African-American movies don’t travel well overseas persist?

The number one thing that hasn’t changed is the self-fulfilling prophecy by the distribution folks selling these films in those territories, saying that they’re not going to work. You’re the one who’s tasked with selling the film, and you have a certain number of resources to split between Film A, which has a white cast and the expectations that this should work in your territory, or Film B, which has an African-American cast and no expectations. You’re going to throw your resources to Film A. We have to change the way we’re thinking in the distribution chain. I was really encouraged by the numbers that Moonlight has done internationally. [Moonlight grossed $10 million more at the foreign box office compared to domestic.] That’s a film without huge international stars, an all African-American cast, thematically a very African-American story, and it worked. And the reality is that a good story is a good story, and it will resonate with audiences. Period. You don’t need any qualifier on the word “audience.”

The Maine @ 9:30 Club [May 3, 2017]

Please ignore any and all typos in this. It’s coming from my phone since no real wifi to do it in the computer. But that’s okay because I don’t mind one bit.

So yesterday, May 3, I along with my older sister went to Washington, D.C. We were meant to be there all day but people do things and plans get ruined. I digress though! The reason we were in D.C. was because The Maine was on tour!! I mean obviously anyone who enjoys the band knows they were on tour but still. The last time I saw The Maine was in May 2011 in North Carolina, so a good 6 years have passed. Back then, I was only 14 I believe. I had either not started high school yet or was just starting. So for me to be able to see them again live at all was amazing.

My sister (who I’m visiting) lives all the way in Baltimore. The two of us caught a train to Union Station but because of a track issue, the train (well every train) was delayed for at least 2 ½ hours. We boarded around 3:30 were meant to arrived by 4:30 at the latest but because of the delays, we didn’t actually get to D.C. until much later. It was already 7 when we were at the stop before ours. Then we still had time to go and didn’t reach D.C. until about 8. That big of a delay even after we started moving. So imagine my sadness when I found that I had missed Beach Weather. When my sister and I got into the club, they were setting up for The Mowgli’s. I’ve made a promise to myself to see Beach Weather one day.

Before the announcement of the tour, I had actually never heard of The Mowgli’s. But I’m glad I found them. Their overall energy and vibe are amazing and Katie’s speech during the break between songs was nothing short of amazing or love filled. Her words about love and being accepting and just being good and okay is something I could really get into hearing all the time. Not only that, but the raw feeling of the band itself and the connections I didn’t even think could happen actually happened. If this sounds like a lot of running around words and not saying anything, that’s literally how I felt listening to them. They have a great sound and their energy is hype but it’s not something I can put into words correctly. The saying “you have to see it to believe it” really rings true. If any of The Mowgli’s read this, come to Charlotte NC please. I wanna see you guys again and get a picture with you next time!

So… onto The Maine event. Like my pun? No? Okay. Anyway! Let me tell you why I feel like I set up the best day of my life so far. Originally I was on the right end of the stage but something told me to just move over to the other side. Of course I could’ve ignored it but you know. Why would you ignore your instinct at a freakin concert? So I moved and got some pics as they changed from The Mowgli’s to the LLL stage. The roses were great but the turf was a nice touch. The lights dimmed and then it happened. The guys came out on the same side I was standing on. They didn’t see me coming in and only Kennedy waved going out but that close proximity. Anyway there was literally no way. When I first saw them, Black & White was “new.” Not new but it was the most recent album. Who would’ve thought that a year old was “recent.” In Darkness & In Light was out by the 2011 concert too but that’s not the point. The point is, if you needed a mental picture of time there it is. So it’s been a loooong time.

They started playing and being right next to a speaker was probably bad but it was pretty good cause you’re literally right in front of the music. Anyway, I’m not here to rate the concert. I wanna tell how great it is for me and GOD it was AMAZING. During the concert, John was John. Talking about gettin those pits sweaty. My favorite part though was when he was lookin over the crowd and pointed me out. It wasn’t random though. I have an unhealthy obsession with headbands and at the current moment, I have about 10. I won’t go into all of them but I have a lot of cat ears. One of them I recently got and it was perfect. Red cat ears and with roses on them. When getting ready that day, I was trying to decide if I could wear my rose cat ears or a crown. With respect to the current album’s aesthetic, I chose to go with roses and my sister had some rose earrings that I wore too. During the show John looked over and noticed them and as a result, noticed me. You have no idea how happy that made me. Then there was Jason! Hands down the best part of the set. This concert was the stuff that I absolutely LIVE for. As they were going off later on, myself and some others called out to get some of their attention but only Kenneth noticed. He waved and we were happy.

Later, a lot of people got outside because it was over what else do you do? I wanted to get a picture like everyone else with them so we waited outside. That is until Pat came out and told us they’d actually be inside. I didn’t even notice Pat came by until I turned and he was basically next to me. The people at the club kept trying to tell us that nobody can come back in after they went out because they were trying to clean of course, all of us were like that’s not gonna fly because Pat just told us they’d be inside. Luckily they eventually let us in and we all had to line up. There were so many people that it basically reached back down stairs and into the main floor. It was about 10, maybe 15, minutes before the boys came up to meet and take pictures. It had to be real quick so at first it was pic or autograph and no videos or anything. After it was pic OR autograph, not both. Picked picture because that’s amazing compared to an autograph to me.

Let me tell you. These guys are amazing close up and I almost died. Like I was exploding with happiness because last time I saw them I didn’t even get to say hi up closed, I had to go. Anyway, John recognized my ears and high fived me along with giving me a hug. For the picture, I was between Kennedy and Pat. I really think they’re the only “normal” ones of the band. But the craziest one is probably Garrett who seems to have done something crazy in every photo he took. But that’s why I love him ya know? I always say “Oh x is my favorite” or “Y is the best” but honestly it’s hard when they’re all so genuine. My sister kept telling people it was my birthday (which was last week) and so they all wished me happy birthday and ghddjndwjjej it makes me happy just thinking of it. So we said our goodbyes and such and they wished me happy birthday again before we left. I saw some of my new friends down at the bottom of the line too so we pretty much shared happiness especially after they got their pictures.

My sister and I hung out for a bit outside Satellite Room. Well I was in the half in-half out area since I couldn’t go alllll the way in but it was okay. When my sister came out, we say one of the girls I met and we were both basically just waiting around for selfies and to say good bye one last time. It took a while but I and another girl in our group we were with got one last picture with John. He wore my cat ears and ahhh so happy! He also gave me another hug so there’s that. Ever underestimate how tall or short someone is? I don’t realize how tall John was. Pat is around my height & Garrett may be too, but Kennedy, Jared, and John are actually tall. In the selfie, John had to bend over in order to be the same height as me.

After that, we got to go home. It was a fun experience and I immediately went to sleep when I got in. I was so tired and drained that I didn’t even take my shoes off or change clothes. I’ve been sleep most of the day too so until I’m fully up or forced to go out, I’m not changing yet. That’s all there was though.

During the concert, both myself and my sister meet some really cool people. Some traveled a few states, some within the state, some all the way from another country. I even got the red flag they were selling. I wanted more but the flag was my #1 want. I really just had a lot of fun and couldn’t ask for more. My sister who had never head of them even really enjoyed herself which was my main goal.

With this, I hope to get back to reviewing music and concerts that I go to. So many bands and musicians follow me on Twitter every week that I feel like I need to do SOMETHING. I’ve actually never been to Vans or an ATL concert (that’s a totally different story too) so I hope this is the year I do more than I have ever done. Thanks for reading!
