"the streetcar incident made dutch turn on the gang--" no it didnt. his change in behaviour started pre-colter/chapter 1. also thats a really wild thing to be saying in general.
'' jack isn't john's son- '' no , ur wrong '' uncle is red harlow- '' no , ur wrong . rdr dosen't take place in the same universe as red dead revolver . they literally said red dead revolver characters won't be present . '' molly ratted the gang - '' no , she didn't . '' trelawny is the strange man - '' no , he isn't . rockstar confirmed they aren't the same person
'' abigail only whines - '' no she dosen't . she's telling john to stop being dumb and a idiot .

i have a hyperfixation and i wont shut up about it, take my rambles about mount rageous
i wanna talk about mount rageous (the song). specifically velvets vocals.
veneer's vocals are completely overshadowed by velvets and completely fade out by the middle of the song
from a lore standpoint, its because he stopped singing because the trolls got taken from him so he could no longer steal their talent
but you could also argue at this point, its also because veneer has realized impacts of his actions now. i dont think veneer ever fully, completely consented to kidnapping floyd (btw how did they do that??) but probably went along thinking that it wouldnt be too bad and even if he died, no one would ever know and they could just get another troll (or by that time he could convince velvet that its gone too far and actually stop her before another troll died)
but now there are members of his friends and family publicly outing them and calling them frauds, fighting for floyd and hes probably like "oh shit he wasnt just some nobody and these people are fighting for him"
BUT BUT BUT thats veneer, its velvet who i wanna talk about
after that musical interlude in the soundtrack (where it was actual scenes of dialogue), velvet takes figurative and literal center stage as her vocals become the primary focus of the song.
the lyrics repeat, but they sound so desperate shes not the same strong confident persona that she was giving off anymore. now shes desperate and fighting to keep the attention on her and not on the fucking 3inch creatures fighting for the freedom
at 2:15 it becomes so apparent when the backing tracks die out and you hear her sing "im going to live forever" and then at the very end where her last line is "baby, remember my name"
shes desperate to be remembered, to be wanted and feel needed. to be adored, almost.
i dont know how much any of you know about singing, but your emotions can have a big play on how you sing something
you gain more bass in your voice when your angry and therefore it follows when youre singing
and when you become desperate your voice can break, become raspy
now look at velvet. her singing at this point is less singing and more screaming
and holy shit the LAST LINE
"baby remember my name" as she holds out a long note while the backing vocals chant at you. they chant at you to remember. remember her name. who she was. dont leave her in the gallows of history nameless and faceless.
its haunting if you spend more than 5 seconds thinking about it. they could almost take that score and put it in some kind of horror movie.
and in a way, she kinda got what she wanted. she and veneer will be remembered, but not for the right thing. theyll be remembered as frauds. remembered as the people who lied and cheated their way to the top and fell astronomically when confronted.
theyll be remembered as hypocrites. after all, they wrote it themselves
"if you want to be as famous as me you gotta work"

My Secret
Richard Winters x Captain!Sink!Reader
Synopsis: Hiding your relationship from your father was harder than you both thought. But could you do it successfully??
Tumblr media
"Y/N!" you snapped your head over to your father as he called your name sharply, trying to snap you out of your daze. "Yes Dad" you stated firmly as you stepped towards his desk. You were hoping he didn't see what you were staring at outside of the window. "You arent focused... now I was gonna have you help Nixon and Dobie with the plans... but you're in need of a break." Your father stated distractedly as he accepted more papers from the Captains from other companies, but not one person from your company turned anything in. Partially your fault, partially Lews... Mainly Dicks. You loved him, you really did, but he couldn't seem to get his head out of the clouds. After all, you only lost a few men on the mission, but a few was too much for him. "Sorry father" you started up as he turned back to you. Your eyes were trained on the name plate on his desk, proudly baring "Sink." You were thankful that the colonel was your father, which allowed you to get away with many things, such as getting too drunk or sleeping too long. But him being your father also meant that all dating was off limits.
"Y/n..."
Your eyes snapped up from your gaze at the name plate and up to his worried face. You didnt know where your head was, and that was dangerous. Blaming Dick for this conundrum was ridiculous, considering you two were a thing since boot camp. But something else was driving you mad, and you didnt know what. He leaned back in his chair, biting his tongue and trying to decide what to do with you. While you were worthy and useful to the success of Easy Company, you were also his daughter. "I'm pulling you from Nixon to help Winters with some things" he stated finally as he sat forward in his chair. "You think you can handle that?" He pressed after you just stared at him blankly. You nodded and he returned the gesture just as the door opened. You turned, expecting to see red, but only seeing a brunette. "Ah Colonel Dobie!" Your dad proclaimed as he stood swiftly and moved over towards the other man. You leaned against your fathers desk, not really interested in the new comer. "And who is this pretty little thing" you heard the British man call out as he turned from your father and faced you with a bright smile. Some girls would find it charming.
You found it creepy.
Your cheeks heated up as he approached you, making you look to your father for help. "This is my daughter. Y/N" your dad proclaimed as he followed behind Dobie. He didnt see your call out for help, but it was too late anyway. "Ummm" you stated as he grabbed your hand in his. "A pleasure to meet you beautiful Y/n" Dobie whispered lowly before lifting your hand to his lips. You froze in shock and counted the seconds until he let go. "Nice to um... meet you too" you stated firmly while trying to hide your shock and embarrassment. Only Dick could do that to you, no one else. Make you feel so helpless and pretty at the same time. Speaking of Dick.
"Where is Winters and Nixon" you pressed finally pulling your hand from Dobie's grasp and sliding off the desk. Walking past Dobie quickly, you grabbed your dads arm securely to show Dobie that while your dad didn't see his flirtatious antics towards you, you were off limits. "Right here" you heard a warm voice call out from behind you. You tried to bite back a smile but your cheeks gave away that that voice was something special to you. Turning, you smiled brightly at the love of your life. Dick gave you a side smile before walking over to Sink for some further instructions. You let go to walk over to Nix who was now talking to Dobie. "Hey there sweets how ya been!" Nix called out as he pulled you in for a big hug. Your dad had you in his clutches for awhile so you could help him with big decisions and the such. But now, now you were being pushed back into the fight. Thankfully, you stayed back like Nix but you were most of the time, up Dicks ass. You wondered if things would be different if your father placed you somewhere else. Not necessarily in a different company, but with different people. While you were an intelligence officer, you were the one who often times played telephone between the two Captain's. The most nerve wracking "run" was when you had to race down the hill to ask Dick why Dog company was retreating, only to find tanks in your wake. You turned around and raced back up that hill faster than Dog company was running away from the shelling. That was the moment your father decided you were to be situated with the officer that was out of the fight at all times. Which was Lew. Not for long though, the minute that Dick was placed behind a desk was the minute you were placed with him. Granted, you two were already dating far before this happened, but it was nice to get to spend so much time with him. Discussing plans, asking questions, kissing.
Lots and lots of kissing.
Your cheeks heated up at the thought of just his lips on yours, his hands roaming your body in a way that was both sexual and respectful. Spending time with him, only showed you how much you couldn't live without him. You needed him. You needed-
"Jesus Christ Y/n can you pay attention" you once again snapped out of your thoughts and realized you had moved from Lew and towards Dick, but you weren't staring at him. Thankfully. That would certainly give your little secret away. "I'm sorry dad.. I just... I need a break" you whispered as you finally stormed over to him. He stared at you blankly as if you didnt listen to him only 5 minutes ago, "I already told you that you are going to help Dick" he stated quietly and you just sighed. "That's not what I meant-"
"Dick." Your father exclaimed cutting your outrage off. You needed sleep, not more time with your lover. The closer you got, the harder it would be to keep you guys a secret. "Y/n will be helping you write your report that I need by tomorrow. Now you two get going! I need that report as soon as possible" he continued before waving you both off. You let out a sigh before turning back to the red head that stole your heart. "Let's go" you grumbled before storming out of the base.
Tumblr media
"Did I do something wrong?" He asked over the loud ding of the typewriter. You looked over from your spot with crinkled eyebrows. What could he have done? "What baby?" You asked as you swung your legs down so you were sitting up right and facing him. "You're not talking and you have hardly kissed me... did I do something?" Your face softened at his words and you sighed to yourself. Dobie's actions mixed with your fathers words and the pounding headache didnt really help with the situation that you couldn't escape. You hated keeping you two a secret. It was stressful and not needed. "What's going on?" He pressed softly and you just looked at him sadly. The secret was his idea and you had agreed to it, but you hated it. You wanted to love him publicly and not just in silence. Lew was the only other person that knew, but that was even pushing it. Something was bothering you, Dick saw that and it concerned him deeply. Your mind was in the clouds and you couldn't focus, a dangerous thing to be when in the middle of war. "Fine" you started boldly, the tone and fierceness in your voice scared even you as Dick braced himself for bad news.
"I want this secret to be gone" you admitted quieter this time, as to not scare him anymore. You weren't breaking up with him, just with the secret and while your tone didnt scare him, his silence scared you. He tapped his pen slowly on the desk as he zoned out on the middle of the wall behind you. "Dick" you whispered after about a minute of silence, it was probably seconds, but it felt like years. "Your father wont approve" he admitted sadly causing you to scoff. "I don't care if he doesnt approve Dick. I love you and I dont want this to be a secret anymore." You stated shakily as if it was the only thing that was holding your relationship together. "Dick please" you begged harder as you approached him. His blue eyes followed you as you rounded the desk and pushed him around in his chair. He looked up at you as you sat down on his lap, tears in your eyes and lips quivering. He knew you were seconds away from a meltdown. His hands went to your hips and rubbed them with his thumbs soothingly, trying so hard to calm you down. "I dont want you to be my secret anymore Dick" you continued as you cupped his cheeks in your palms. Your whole world was nestled in between your fingers, and you didnt want to hide it anymore.
"I want you to be mine forever" you stated firmly as you pressed your forehead against his. A soft smile formed on his lips which he hoped would stop the tears that formed in your eyes from falling. "We will talk to your father tomorrow" he stated finally. He knew it was time to end the secret, and he was certain it would go over well. "Now stop your crying" he scolded playfully before pressing his lips to yours quickly and sweetly.
"I have a report to write and you have to help."

Honestly remember season 1 and Maxwell Lord was taken into the DEO without due process and that's when James was like hey maybe the DEO actually isn't good. At all. And he was right but at the time he was only talking about humans at the time, and how they were treating humans. But what if this led his season 2 arc, with him as the head of this massive media company was James realizing that the DEO is actually alien Guantanamo.
These aliens had at minimum 24 years of being locked up, since that was how long Kara was in The Phantom Zone. We have no idea how long they were sentenced there for, or even for what. And what we know is that the DEO would then capture the alien, take them in, and decide whether or not they will be locked up forever and probably horrible confinement with no sunlight, or cell mates, or any chance of parole. Just look at that tiny cell Astra had. There is no parole, they are there forever without any kind of due process or rights, with agents possibly also conducting experiments on them, like they did with Astra and Kryptonite. They literally tortured Astra--and have you ever seen an alien prisoner with a lawyer? I haven't.
Jonn had to pretend to be Hank for over a decade--Hank, who clearly had a bunch of friends in the military as we see in that ep where Alex is interrogated by Lucy in s1. You can't all of a sudden be an alien lover and have extremely Progressive views. Maybe he can gradually and arbitrarily make changes, like letting go of the professor of astronomy that we see, who Hank probably would have kept imprisoned, or doing his best to recruit people who aren't all hardcore xenophobes. But it's not enough.
The DEO literally play judge, jury, and executioner with alien lives.
am not exaggerating when I say this is alien Guantanamo
and James realizing this, especially realizing this when he remembers that they shot Kara out of the sky with Kryptonite and locked her up before letting her go. It's almost a survival thing for Kara to work with them, because this could be her. And it's one thing when it is all the Fort Rozz aliens trying to kill her, but what about all the other aliens in national city?
And do you know who's also end up being on his side? Someone he talks to as a point to be like yes this is the alternative we need, James isn’t just going to be like “this is wrong,” oh no, he’s going to have a solution and ideas of how to make the system better, an alternate especially since right now it seems like for any crime aliens get life sentences. Who this would bring him into contact with? Detective Maggie Sawyer from National City Police Department's science branch. And oh look. Now we also have a cohesive storyline for Maggie that exists outside of Alex.
And that's definitely one way to cause conflict between James and Kara, temporarily breaking them up. Because yes Alex definitely took the job in case they ever came after Kara--she straight out says multiple times she did this to protect Kara, because as she was before she couldn't take on the DEO, and this would give her hours, maybe days of warning that she might need to grab Kara and run-- but it was also a Lifeline when she was struggling. and there's also a fact that most of the aliens Alex encounters wouldn't hesitate to try and kill Aluras daughter if they knew about her, and she says in season one that J'onn told her that they were going to save the world. She then makes a point that she can't distinguish between aliens and humans anymore, but we don't really see that in DEO policies, other than they'll now take in humans with powers as well as aliens. To do what she does, Alex needs to believe that she's in the right-- and tbh it kind of reminds me about border patrol dynamics w their family members(when I went to El Paso,TX--and this is from both undocumented immigrants and the border patrol themselves--they mentioned that several border patrol agents would have family members who were there illegally and it's just the dynamic they live with it's definitely an interesting but complicated topic).
This entire media war would definitely place James at odds with Alex. And even if Kara understands (even if it's a truth Kara doesn't want to acknowledge because so much of her life is hard and complicated and she doesn't want to think about how tenuous her freedom really is, and what she's maybe done for the past year), both Kara and Alex choose each other first, always. It's not a man (or racism) who breaks up Kara and James. And James understands, he does, and he hopes that one day maybe Kara will stop being scared of what could happen (and if she is, its because hes helped shape a world where she wont be)--but it's not going to stop him.
This is what's right. This isn't bs contrived drama--god, the metaphor and symbolism alone, about a black man being in control of the media narrative of the xenophobic practices of shady government law enforcement that do what they want to a vulnerable minority population, shaping public opinion, acting as the moral compass of the show? Mindblowing
This is how James Olsen can end up being a guardian for others. Not with his fists, or against muggers. Because this is something he can do that Kara can't. Kara may be a reporter, can go against a thousand corrupt politicians and institutions potentially--but not the DEO. She can't do this--as an alien, she's under their purview. But James, as a civilian and a human, isn't. Kara Danvers may be somewhat of a big name for a few select journalism circles by being Cat's assistant for 3 years but that’s a selective circle (and how many nights do you think Kara stays up late, trying to avoid thinking about what scenario would make the DEO come after her, or how many times they almost did, how much information they collected on her, before she ever became Supergirl) James said it himself--he took that picture, and now everyone knows his name.
This is not about punches and fighting--this is how James can frame the narrative to shape public opinion and make change on a global scale. He's not some random reporter the DEO can disappear, or intimidate into compliance. He just became the head of an international media company, and he’s publicly known as Superman’s best friend--this has nothing to do with Superman, but he, with all his fragile humanity, has been threatened and intimidated by every single goddamn villain Superman has gone against and came out the other side breathing. Sure he’s scared, but when has that ever stopped him?
He’s James fucking Olsen, and he’ll hold his head high as he does what’s right.

Gorillaz Analysis
Caskit’s not ready to throw all their cards on the table but the time has come!!!
Tumblr media
Okay then, I had to think long and hard about what I wanted to talk about here with Gorillaz cause DAMN!!
I love gorillaz,
I love the characters
damon is a gift that we just dont deserve
Tumblr media
But how did I end up in the fandom pool?
Well for one, I have heard of gorillaz music back in middleschool but at the time I was busy with Invader Zim and Inuyasha as well as jumping into this band wagon as well  (Full metal Alchemist)
Tumblr media
so by the time I turned to look at Gorillaz was when phase 3 was JUST wrapping up and making way for phase 4. which means I jumped into a fandom that had characters that I knew NOTHING ABOUT. Do you know what that means?
It means I also had no understanding or knowledge of why people shipped “this or that” in the fandom, but I gained some intel on the characters and the growing plot of the story, but other than that, I didnt understand why I was drawn to a particular “ship” in the fandom.
Tumblr media
*actual expression made, im not joking*
Once upon a time, caskit discovered 2doc and was not surprised that this was a ship. I have seen similar stuff that has a common theme that i was drawn to at the time. I was more interested in why fans ship them so I dived in head first into the boiling lava and came to a conclusion.,.....
I dont see them as able (capable?) of ever ending up in the way that most 2doc shippers would pick. The two are chaotic on levels of different tiers of “weird and gross” and I dont really have a reason as to why i was drawn to the ship, but It made me want to analyse what exactly a stable relationship is!
I basically walked around in that area of the fandom and didnt really form any “attachment” to it. I never really experienced a “healthy relationship”, lived in childhood and teen years were I went through life avoiding relationships. So I didnt have a good start, but I knew eventually that I would have to explain myself.
I feel bad that I wouldnt be able to give a solid answer to what makes me want to sit down and analyse any scenario that has “present abuse undertones” but I know that in the past and how I grew up with what I was exposed to...That I would come to realize how unhealthy it is just for me.
This post isnt particularly about 2doc itself, but its more about discussing how I handled MY reaction to something that I have seen over and over. In a way, I could see those abusive tones that were present.
Basically Caskit never experienced good healthy relationships and decided that it was a good idea to use gorillaz as a processing strategy....not a good idea in the end cause...OOOHHHHHHH
It confused me more than before!!!
I got friends that tag their stuff, and I dont really get so bothered with peoples own opinions, cause I was more worried about how I would come to understand everything.
Tumblr media
When I think about how fans are dividing and putting up a wall to keep “haters outa my yard”  it usually has to deal with shipping stuff, and character hating. And I guess I was confused about everyone’s perception of the characters.
Talking about the characters, I dont have a “least favorite to most” cause I have specific connections to them in different ways.
I can find similarities to noodle for the expectations she had in a band at age 10 and growing up (plus we are both gays that dont like to publicly talk about relationships)
I connect with Russel cause I lost a piece of myself  after a paranormal encounter and 3 near death experiences and suffer hallucinations. His protective demeanor to little noodle clicked with me. I see him as the Heart and soul, dedicated and warm friendly guy. ( you mean a decent human being right?)
I relate to 2d in a way that I share his enthusiasm, and mad bravery to live with the same guy who ran him over and caused 2 accidents that are permanent.
I relate to murdoc in a weird way...  His childhood hits too close to home for me, as a CSA survivor of 2 incidents, pain addict and victim of abuse, draws similarities. But there were things that he has done that match things to my past like the abusive father, and dwelling on the darker aspect of a bittersweet reality. I was expressing physical violence to “show affection” and was never called out for it. I was not just a victim, I was also the abuser and since it was something that murdoc is faced with, is why I hated him. He is (for me) the thing I hate about myself.
When I saw more and more fans hating on murdoc I wondered if people would ever think I was the same as him. Fans didnt like the way he treated 2d  and the rest of the band, And I agreed. Fans hated him for lying and causing drama and I agreed.
His ignorance was a comedy slapstick (dressing in a nazi uniform cause he thought it “looked cool” despite russel telling him that its not a good idea) and was seen as the “crazy hooligan that has delusional dreams of fame”  and it bothered me that jamie used this to cover up allot of obvious issues that needed to be addressed. and the way that the fandom treated him made me think about how I would be accused of being like him.
(thank goodness I didnt cause a car accident and have to sell my soul to satan for a shot at fame with a kickass band and didnt make uncomfortable sexual jokes or ignore others that tried to help me.)
I can separate what justifies the hate on murdoc when it comes to abuse and causing shit to go down. becuase I did those things in the past, but it didnt take me more than a decade or more to realize that what I did was wrong! I didnt take forever to change for the better. so Im frustrated at him for taking so long to turn around and go “holly fuck im a bastard! I should probably fix that”
Yeah NyOO ShiTT HunnayYY!!
I dont hate him for being an idiot, I hate that he symbolizes all things wrong about me that never got closure!
him admitting to being the cause of 2d’s social anxiety and eye damage as well as the abuse is easier said than done! but the fact that he is letting everything out of the “in-denial basket” is nice for me to see, cause right now Healing and progression in closure to issues of trauma is what is important to me.
The endgame for my perspective on 2d and murdocs relationship is this:
I dont want to ship them
I dont even see it as a thing regardless of character development and both guys working through their own shit themselves.
I am not the best person to explain what a toxic or abusive relationship can be.
Why? becuase I lived through it and I was both the victim and abuser to myself  and grew up without a good relationship (and I have a fear of positive affection) so I dont enjoy going through the same pattern as before where i shipped abuse in the past as a “dumb 13 year old weeboo”
I dont view their relationship as romantic, or platonic, or healthy.
I just want the boys to enjoy their own character growth individually.
I would like to eventually see a friendship with them But I’ll be more excited if instead the whole band eventually gain a healthy relationship with everyone.
Tumblr media
Year 2018 marks the year I jumped in head first into gorillaz as a blind fruit bat
(I call it the year caskit played with fire) for cosplaying ‘murdoc fuckn wrinkles’ at a convention around the time the fandom was yelling at him and jamming to 2d’s album.
Caskit jumped into the shipping lava all for Behavioral analyzing and hopped over fences to see other fans perspectives of characters they liked and hated just to make sure Caskit could understand the illuminati that is Gorillaz.
I made friends all over the fandom, and thanks to a few people, I gained more confidence to push my art skills and create some kickass art of Gorillaz.
Tumblr media
And yeah I yap yap about murdoc ( looks over @russelhusselhobbs im sorry you put up with my bullshit) but remember peeps.
I like hearing about the others and have gotten more into 2d’s character as well as Jumping over the fence to go hang out with russel fans and listen to fangirling from friends and just trying to be a freakn fairy godmother and deliver some good representing art.
And for those who aren’t aware, my past artwork is probably gonna float around so if its signed as Caskit or Caskit19 then its mine and if you see my old 2doc stuff.....,
Tumblr media
for the trigger.
But YEAHHHHHH!!! I wanted to throw all this on the table. and I dont know how to feel about that...(I swear my friend jokes with “need some feel good inc for Caskit” ) Kinda contemplating my choice between sticking my head into a hornets nest or jumping into a dark water trench.... the hornets nest sounds less likely to give me a seizure induced panic attack so ill go for that. ( I have a tolerance for inflicted pain so no you cant hurt me by using violence cause I dont have any consideration for myself and my safety)
But yeah now I can get back to drawing fun stuff. (hopefuly caskit wont have to bore you guys with stupid shit ever again! xD)

In his latest audition to be America’s Healer-in-Chief, Vice President Joe Biden delivered a speech on Tuesday about the fight against systemic racism, which he said was fundamental to a “battle for the soul of the nation” this election year. “The country is crying out for leadership,” Biden said, speaking at a podium at Philadelphia City Hall, flanked by American flags. “Leadership that can unite us, leadership that brings us together, leadership that can recognize the pain and deep grief of communities that have had a knee on their neck for a long time.”
The speech was the latest in Biden’s empathy offensive—a series of remarks and public appearances that talk about the pain at the heart of the nationwide protests, while calling for unity to confront systemic racism. Biden’s strategy is to make his presidential campaign a contrast between character and empathy on his part and antagonism and bluster on Trump’s. In the process, Biden is hoping to demonstrate a model of leadership rooted in shared suffering and compassion, themes that have animated his political career.
As he has often done over his decades in public life, Biden spoke Tuesday about personal mourning and historical grief, this time in the context of communities protesting the continuing scourge of racial injustice. “We’re a nation in pain, but we must not let our pain destroy us,” he said. “We’re a nation enraged, but we cannot let our rage consume us. We’re a nation that’s exhausted, but we will not allow our exhaustion to defeat us.”
Those themes serve his larger goal of drawing a character contrast with the President’s response. Trump, who tweeted that the protesters were “THUGS” and vowed that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” had spent the weekend threatening protesters outside the White House with “vicious dogs” and “ominous weapons,” and urged the nation’s governors to “dominate” the protesters, whom he called “terrorists.” On Monday, Trump delivered a speech in the Rose Garden threatening the use of military force against protests and vowing to “end it now.”
Biden, by contrast, used the Tuesday speech as an opportunity to illustrate a different vision of leadership. “I look at the presidency as a very big job, and nobody will get it right every time, and I won’t either,” he said in Philadelphia. “But I promise you this: I won’t traffic in fear and division, I won’t fan the flames of hate, I’ll seek to heal the racial wounds that have long plagued our country, not use them for political gain.”
The Trump campaign responded forcefully on Tuesday, accusing Biden of using “the politics of racial division when they suited his needs.” “Joe Biden’s campaign made it clear that they stand with the rioters, the people burning businesses in minority communities and causing mayhem, by donating to post bail for those arrested,” said Trump campaign senior advisor Katrina Pierson in a statement. “He has obviously made the crass political calculation that unrest in America is a benefit to his candidacy.”
But the Philadelphia speech was just Biden’s latest demonstration of his attempt to do the things Trump can’t or won’t: ease the pain and unify the country. On Sunday, Biden visited with protesters in Wilmington, wearing a mask as he posed for selfies with demonstrators. On Monday, he visited a local black church to pray and listen to community leaders, then took a knee for a photo. Later that day, he hosted a roundtable with the mayors to discuss solutions to police violence.
The speech also represented an elaboration on Biden’s oft-repeated slogan that this race is a “battle for the soul of the nation.” In Philadelphia, he articulated an analysis of America’s battle with systemic racism that borrowed from Barack Obama’s often-repeated idea that the fight is worth having, even if it is never fully won. “I wish I could say that hate began with Donald Trump and will end with him. It didn’t, and it wont,” Biden said. “American history isn’t a fairy tale with a guaranteed happy ending. The battle for the soul of this nation has been a constant push and pull for more than 240 years. A tug of war between the American ideal that we’re all created equal and the harsh reality that racism has long torn us apart.”
“The honest truth is that both elements are part of the American character,” he continued. “At our best, the American ideal wins out. But it’s never a rout, it’s always a fight, and the battle is never fully won. But we can’t ignore the truth that we’re at our best when we open our hearts rather than clench our fists.”
The response to nationwide protests around Floyd’s killing have crystallized the two candidates’ approach to the presidency: for Biden, it’s a moment to grieve and heal, for Trump, it’s a moment to emphasize divisions and talk about “law and order.” It’s “sort of a psychic X ray of what the two men are like,” says Stuart Stevens, a GOP strategist who ran Romney’s 2012 campaign and is now supporting Biden. “It’s impossible to imagine another president sitting inside the White House and rage tweeting” he said. “Even Nixon went out and talked to the protesters,” referring to Nixon’s famous visit with hippies protesting in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
The Biden team is clearly leaning into the contrast. “Whether it be on the physical or virtual campaign trail, Joe Biden’s unmatched experience, thoughtful leadership, and profound empathy are the qualities voters are searching for in a president and are completely absent from Donald Trump’s reckless behavior and deranged tweets,” says Biden spokesman Matt Hill. “As the nation mourns the loss of lives and livelihoods from coronavirus and grapples with the racial injustices that killed George Floyd, Vice President Biden has provided Americans what they are searching for—a leader who listens to their concerns, comforts grieving families, leads by example, and shows them how to come together in times of crisis.”
Biden has treated the last week as an audition for the American people, demonstrating his vision of how a President should behave through a national crisis. Part of that is drawing on his painful past: after losing his wife and daughter in a 1972 car accident and his son Beau to cancer in 2015, Biden has developed an uncommon fluency with grief, and a reflex to publicly share mourning that has powered him through his political career. “My losses are not the same as the losses felt by so many, but I know what it feels like when you think you can’t go on. I know what it means to have that black hole in your chest,” he said in Philadelphia. “But I also know that the best way to bear loss and pain is to turn that anger and anguish into purpose, and Americans know what our purpose is as a nation.”
Strategists in both parties say the roiling crises gripping the country gives Trump more rope to embarrass himself and allows Biden to flex his most powerful political muscles. “Is anybody defending Trump right now?” says Tim Miller, a Republican strategist who ran communications for Jeb Bush and is now advising conservatives to vote for Biden. “You don’t even hear Republicans on the Hill talk about how he’s doing a good job.”
The Floyd protests were just the latest opportunity for Biden to go on an empathy offensive: the coronavirus pandemic had already given him plenty of room to argue the point. Consider the difference when the American Covid-19 death toll reached 100,000 this week. On the day the New York Times ran the names of 1,000 dead Americans on their front page, Trump was golfing. On the Wednesday when the death toll surpassed 100,000, Trump tweeted glancing condolences about what he called a “very sad milestone.”
Biden, from his home TV studio, issued a 2 minute video address to mark the enormity of human loss. “There are moments in our history so grim, so heart-rending, that they’re forever fixed in each of our hearts. A shared grief,” Biden said, looking into the camera and speaking directly to the families of the dead. “I think I know what you’re feeling,” he said. “You feel like you’re being sucked into a black hole in the middle of your chest. It’s suffocating. Your heart is broken, and there’s nothing but a feeling of emptiness right now.”
That empathy gap may help explain how Biden has built a durable lead in the polls without visiting a single swing state or shaking the hand of a single voter in the last three months, as he’s been largely isolated in his home because of COVID-19. Biden leads Trump by 10 points according to a May 31 Washington Post/ABC News poll and has an edge in a half-dozen key swing states, an advantage that has remained remarkably stable over the past several months. One recent Quinnipiac poll found Biden leading Trump by 10 points with senior citizens and 11 points with white women, both groups Trump won handily in 2016.
Some observers say that lead is less the result of Biden’s empathy offensive than Trump’s erratic behavior in recent months. Biden‘s best move, they say, may be to just let the President stumble on his own words. “When your opponent is killing himself, just get out of the way,” explains veteran Democratic strategist David Axelrod, quoting an old campaign axiom. “Donald Trump can’t help but make himself the center of attention all the time,” he says, adding that any Biden mistakes look miniscule by contrast. “When you’re lighting your hair on fire every day, it’s hard to say ‘yea, but look at that guy.'”
And the protests could have political impact in November. While some research suggests that violent protests can favor self-proclaimed “law-and-order” conservatives like Trump, other data suggests that mobilizing non-white voters could be the key to a Democratic victory in November. “You can call them protests, but you could also call them non-white voter turnout rallies,” Stevens says. “It’s hard to imagine anything that’s going to be more motivating.”

2020
Here’s what it signals: Even if Bernie won’t be with us forever, his socialist movement will be.
The anticipated endorsement of Bernie Sanders as her preferred candidate for president by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday will not determine the winner of the Democratic presidential primary. Endorsements almost never matter. But this one does—for the future of the Democratic Party, not the future of its 2020 presidential campaign.
The timing of Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement sends a sharp message to the party establishment and the progressive movement: We socialists are not here for Elizabeth Warren’s reformed capitalism. We socialists want socialism, and we’re not keeping quiet until we get it. Ocasio-Cortez seems to be telling us that Sanders and his movement will still be with us when he’s gone—and that she aims to be the one who leads it.
Story Continued Below
Ocasio-Cortez is making her move at a pivotal point in the race. Warren has eclipsed Sanders as not just the left-wing frontrunner, but the race’s frontrunner, leading or tied for the lead in most national and early state polls. Two weeks ago, Sanders suffered a heart attack, raising serious questions about whether his campaign could even continue. If Ocasio-Cortez didn’t see a significant difference between Warren and Sanders, or if she wanted to cozy up to Warren and be seen as part of her team, she would have great incentive to endorse Warren, urge her fellow socialists to join her, and help squelch any ideological skirmishing on the left.
Some progressive commentators worry that friction between Warren and Sanders—or more accurately, between Warren and Sanders supporters—is hurting the chances of progressives to sideline the party’s moderates and the donor class. “All you people squabbling at your desks about whether Warren or Sanders is scarier to big money are missing the damn point,” scoldedTimeeditor-at-large Anand Giridharadas on Twitter. “Together they make up a two-headed populist uprising against plutocracy.” Late last month,TheNation’s editor, D.D. Guttenplan, advised progressive voters not to choose between Warren and Sanders until absolutely necessary. Instead, “hope the two candidates maintain their truce, competing to outdo each other in the boldness of their ideas and the breadth and passion of their support,” he wrote.
Yet Ocasio-Cortez is choosing, provocatively so. To make the endorsement at this moment is to say: Not so fast, Elizabeth.
Both Warren and Sanders want big tax hikes on the wealthy and corporations, single-payer health insurance, free public college, easier union organizing and tougher trade deals. Both have eschewed hitting the large donor circuit, stress that their agendas are designed to empower the poor and working class, and threaten the power of consolidated wealth. Both have scoffed at bipartisan incrementalism.
However, if you are a committed socialist, the differences between Sanders and Warren are crucial. Nathan Robinson of the influential socialist magazineCurrent Affairslast month detailed his problems with Warren. Some were rooted in tactical concerns that she wouldn’t build a political operation to overwhelm the ruling class, as she’s a “law professor” and not a “movement-builder.” But at bottom, Robinson wrote, “I don’t like to say that I can’t trust Elizabeth Warren, but I can’t.” He pointed to this year’s State of the Union address: “Donald Trump promised that America would ‘never be a socialist country.’ Warren stood up andapplauded, as Bernie sat and fumed. This was a very clear ‘Which side are you on?’ moment.”
At a similar moment, Ocasio-Cortez has chosen to remind everyone of which side she’s on.
The differences are not strictly symbolic or theoretical. Take climate. Sanders envisions a truly massive federal government intervention to avert the climate crisis: a $16.3 trillion investment over 15 years, including the establishment of public ownership of electric utilities. Warren not only puts far less money on the table, but she also believes the profit motive can help protect the climate. Asked during the CNN climate forum whether she agreed with Sanders on public ownership, Warren stuck to her capitalistic guns. “Gosh, you know, I’m not sure that that’s what gets you to the solution,” she said, and added, “If somebody wants to make a profit from building better solar panels and generating better battery storage, I’m not opposed to that.”
Warren has echoed Sanders on single-payer health insurance, even weathering question after question about how much she would raise taxes to pay for it. But the fact that she hasn’t always held that position, and still hasn’t released her own detailed plan, leads some to challenge the depth of her commitment. The socialist hosts of the Chapo Trap House podcast torched Warren in June for having a plan for everything but health care. Said one, “All of sudden all the specificity and granular policy … goes out the window when it comes to one issue that directly challenges a key constituency of the Democratic elite.”
Sure, they both propose taxing wealth, not just annual income. But Sanders is more aggressive, with higher rates levied on a broader class of multimillionaires, bringing $1.75 trillion more in revenue over 10 years. And he is more rhetorically aggressive. “I don’t have a beef with billionaires,” said a somewhat charitable Warren in the last debate. Compare that with Sanders, who has said, “I don’t think that billionaires should exist.” Sanders has also acknowledged his wealth tax “does not eliminate billionaires” and that the day billionaires cease to be is “not tomorrow.” But it is clear he wants that day to come. His endgame is not her endgame.
Sanders put it plainly in a recent interview with ABC’s “This Week.” “Elizabeth, I think, as you know, has said that she is a capitalist through her bones,” he said. “I’m not.” (Her exact words were, “I am a capitalist to my bones” and she has also talked of her “love” of “what markets can do.”)
To some, this looks like semantics. The fact that Sanders does not have a platform of immediate government command over the entire economy has made some question not only the significance of his differences with Warren, but also why he even bothers to call himself a democratic socialist. Sanders even said in August: “The private sector is the sector of society which creates most of the wealth in America. And I want them to continue to do that” albeit checked and balanced by a “vibrant public sector.”
Still, by expressing a desire for government to own at least some of the means of production, and to place a ceiling on how much wealth individuals can accumulate, Sanders forces us to take his socialistic language seriously. Certainly, Ocasio-Cortez does.
Fox News’ Laura Ingraham views Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement through the lens of crass political self-interest. “I keep thinking it’s really about a future presidential run for AOC,” Ingraham said. But if Ocasio-Cortez were primarily concerned with her own political ambition, the safer move would be to help the progressive with the best chance of winning the nomination get over the top, and be credited for helping to unify the party. An even safer move would be not to endorse at all.
The more obvious explanation is that Ocasio-Cortez wants to keep the socialist flame burning. Sanders is 78 years old and is in the twilight of his career. If the socialist movement that he has built is going to last, the torch must be passed. Ingraham may well be correct that Ocasio-Cortez wants to take that torch and eventually run for president herself. She would be just barely constitutionally eligible when she turns 35 in 2024. But her Sanders endorsement signals what kind of presidential campaign that would be—a direct descendant of the Sanders efforts that have put building a durable socialist movement in America above short-term electoral considerations.
That doesn’t mean Ocasio-Cortez will use the socialist torch to burn down the Democratic Party. She has said she will “support whoever the Democratic nominee is,” even if it’s Joe Biden, whom she politely criticized as someone who “does not particularly animate me.”
She told theNew York Timeslast month of her time in the House so far, “I think I have more of a context of what it takes to do this job and survive on a day-to-day basis in a culture that is inherently hostile to people like me.” TheTimesnoted she has “cut back on her appearances on behalf of Justice Democrats,” a left-wing organization that specializes in primary challenges, and replaced a publicly combative chief of staff with one who is “sober-minded.”
So Ocasio-Cortez is prepared to remain in the Democratic fold, but her endorsement of Sanders means she has no intention of shelving the socialist banner in the process. The Democratic Party’s big tent has long been filled with ideological tensions between moderates and progressives, but now there is also friction between progressives and socialists. And considering that Ocasio-Cortez is 48 years younger than Sanders, you can be sure that the socialist wing of the Democratic Party is not going away anytime soon.
