5 - words of affirmation:

first, with nicknames. toye tends to swing towards more traditional nicknames (sweetheart, beautiful, etc) and uses them pretty often

he feels like he's not exactly Great with talking, so putting what he can into words through nicknames is his best way to show luz what he's thinking without him becoming overly defensive

luz is. all over the map with nicknames. he ranges from the good ol' fashioned ‘no homo’ names (buddy/pal/etc) to the most unhinged nicknames he can think of (i.e. pillowcase) to Normal Nicknames. toye literally could not gaf less

ok and i mean like look. as far as weaknesses go, i think they're p far up there on the communication scale. these motherfuckers don't talk. u know that bit in himym where robin and barney never talk about their problems and instead just Fuck. bc that's what they do

4 - receiving gifts:

look. gift giving rarely crosses their minds. not because they don't care about it, but because they genuinely just don't think of it

when two people are in the same vicinity a lot/work together/are never separated - like in the army - there isn't a lot of room for grand gestures and gift giving and the likes

they settle into giving each other small things on holidays/birthdays (cigarettes, ticket stubs, etc) but it hardly matters whether or not someone says something or gives them something

3 - quality time:

melds into the above. they spend so much time together no matter where they are (from proximity in the army to post-war living together) that everything they do is in a love language, in a way

they'd watch a lot of movies. luz is literally obsessed with funny face when it comes out and has seen the gay divorcee Too Many Times. toye's favorite is you were never lovelier, he can quote most of the scenes. yes these are all fred astaire movies shh

they're the same way with music. they don't have a lot of money after the war, and what they can save goes into a turntable and whatever vinyls they can find.

it's mostly billie holliday (obviously). but there's a lot of duke ellington in there as well, and, later on, a bunch of eartha kitt.

2 - acts of service:

luz really, really likes working with his hands. he's obsessed with fixing things, and oftentimes, it's things that weren't even broken.

when he's stressed out, he tends to tear apart whatever he can find (the sink, the fridge, etc) and then trying to put it back together

this often translates into him subconsiously doing whatever he can to 'fix' toye

he doesn't even realize that he's doing it, really. toye does, but doesn't say anything, because he knows it's how luz finds whatever equilibrium he's working with

the general rule is that luz is able to fuck around with anything of toye's except for the crutches, the leg, or the chair. everything else is fair game

it almost is a game, at this point - the best way to tell what kind of day luz is having is by looking at the state of Disarray around the apartment

toye doesn't say anything about it, and it's often put back together the next day. when it's not, he puts it back together himself

1 - physical touch:

🍒 have a skincare routine that suits u! 

there’s no need for a 10 step skincare routine, all you really need are makeup remover, cleaser, moisturizer, some special treatment serums if you really need it, and sunscreen. If you want to figure out if there is an area in need of improvement or how to treat a special concern, one thing I’ve found helpful is to go back to the basics and add products after having that routine for a while. 

🍒shower on a regular basis and take care of your teeth. 

this should go without saying but take care of other parts of your body too. your teeth are so important and brushing them regularly is the best way to protect them, especially if you’re like me and live for sweet treats. as for a shower routine, you only need a body wash/soap that you like the smell of, some type of exfoliant, and lotion. again, do not fall into consumerist traps that is not very lana del rey vinyl of you. 

🍒pretty ppl need pretty hair

wash and condition your hair based on your hair type! and by that I mean wash it as often or not often as you need to. In between washes, use a hair oil/serum to keep ur luscious locks healthy. same as skincare, start with a very basic routine and add onto it as you see fit. If you dye your hair, try to maintain your color so that it doesn’t become patchy. finally, don’t forget to style your hair everyday! they do not need to be intricate, but i find doing a cute hairstyle just makes me feel better, even if it is a very slight change. and sleep on a satin pillowcase.

🍒get ur beauty sleep

I love sleeping but I can’t always get my 8 hours, either due to school work or I just can’t fall asleep. to solve that, i started to use a shit ton of fairy lights and other ambient lights in my room, and turning them on after 10pm. I also suggest doing something fun but relaxing when you’re ready for bed, no matter how late it is. this helps ur brain destress and get better quality sleep. for me it is crocheting/reading/watching a youtube video. I also recently started wearing vintage slips and nightgowns instead of pajamas, which not only are cute but also very comfortable. oh and i think having sex before bed also helps me fall asleep but it’s completely circumstantial. 

🍒spice things up w/ accesories

having a signature scent is important, but I also love having a signature jewelry. instead of buying more lesser quality pieces, invest in 2 or 3 well made, gold or silver quality pieces that you’re going to wear everyday. some motifs i personally love are hearts, fruits, initials, and bows, but yours can(and should) look different. the great thing about these pieces is that you can just keep them on your body at all times, saving time and effort in the morning. 

🍒romanticize school/work/errands/whatever you need to do

i love how resilient i am :) i used to think i wasn't and i just was weak as hell and everything was too hard but by learning my limitations & understanding how the things i've been through over the years (especially growing up In My Context undiagnosed w several mental disorders) have affected me & made me into who i am today and i love that even if things get pretty bad now, i know i'll get through it somehow

i love my sense of humor. i really think i'm so funny and i'm not sorry everytime i make someone laugh i feel like i've won a million dollars

i love how passionate i am about things because whenever it gets too hard to keep going or even seeing a reason to, things i love and care about can take me out of that mindspace pretty quickly

Enshittification

This post is about search engines.

I'll get to that.

One of the relatively small home improvement projects on my plate is to replace the shutters.

Shutters, historically, were a necessary and functional element of a house which either served as the sole means of closing a window to the elements, or late as a way to protect the expensive and fragile glass of the windows.

Today, however, we retain them mostly out of tradition. Modern windows are made with tempered glass, multiple panes, and various coatings. So we do not actually need shutters (hurricane shutters are a different beast, but not what I am speaking of right now).

In fact, most shutters are purely decorative - simply screwed or nailed to the side of the house, with no hinge to close them. You'll only find functional shutters on historical buildings.

Personally, I don't much care for exclusively decorative elements. Which is not to say I don't like decoration, just that I prefer it be a functional part which is also aesthetically pleasing.

Unfortunately, a shutter has an effect: it causes discoloration of the siding. Or, more accurately, it prevents the siding under the shutter from becoming discolored. Either way, you can't simply remove shutters which have been up for any length of time unless you want to have a rather unsightly spot where there clearly WAS a shutter.

Thus, it was with some consternation that I observed a rather horny woodpecker completely destroying the shutters in the front of our house. At first I hoped it was salvageable, but he kept coming back, and there is nothing to be done for the damage he did. (And yes, he was horny: this was mating behavior, we don't have termites.)

Well. We had been thinking about replacing them: our new doors are black, the shutters are blue. which was helpful when we moved in, to distinguish our house from the other houses, but that's a non-issue to us now. And as repairs go, it could be worse. Right?

The first step was to determine the size of the shutters. No, they're not all the same size. There are common sizes, but one must check. And this is where we get to search engines.

I found that our existing shutters are 16.25" wide by 47" tall.

Something I have learned the hard way is, apparently the people building these houses were idiots who had acquired a large quantity of recreational drugs. They very often made wildly non-standard choices which cost substantially more, for no discernible reason. The double door opening in the back is 70" wide; standard is 72". That cost us a good $4000 more because we needed custom doors. The deck is made with 5/4 lumber (normal) which is nominal 4" wide (HOW??? You can't buy that!). To replace rotting deck board I have to either rip lumber to width, or route out divots in 2x4s.

And so, apparently, the shutters are NOT a standard size. They could have gone with a standard size. But they did not.

Understand, standardization is key to reducing construction costs. A complete idiot can build a rectangular 16'x 10' deck in an afternoon. A 15'x 13' deck with curves will take four times as long and require Actual Skill. And when you're talking whole units like shutters or doors, the materials cost goes way up: a 36" exterior door might run $250, while a 34" door will be around $900. And let's not even discuss a 35" door, which would have to be custom-made.

Which means that while a 14.5" shutter pair might run $50-$75 at Home Depot, and I could just walk in and pick them up, the ones I need are simply not available at Home Depot or Lowe's, and I must order from a specialty shop for only(!) twice the price. Delivery to occur between next Tuesday and the heat-death of the universe, please have a responsible adult available to sign for the delivery.

Except, I'm having a hard time finding the damned things at all.

The thing I am searching for:

"16.25 wide 47 tall black raised panel vinyl shutters". This is not some wildly out there thing. Common color, common style. Just an unusual width.

What am I getting? Wood shutters. Composite shutters. Louvered shutters. Every color except black. Oh, and each one is 14.5" wide.

Basically the search engines - and this isn't just Google, it's whatever they're using on the company websites, it's DuckDuckGo, it's Wayfair and Amazon - are all just going "Nah, he must want the common results for shutters."

So I'm annoyed at the woodpecker. And generally hateful of the builder.

But, honestly, Search engines were supposed to make it possible to find things online. They weren't supposed to hide what we wanted.

The record store had just reopened following its closure for Christmas. It felt good to be open and at work again, Steph had spent a good amount of time in the studio during the holidays, so it's the same old for her. However, with the joy of opening up comes the hassle of shipments. The Christmas season saw some sales so a stock-up is definitely due.

We've been sorting records and CDs since 4:30 AM, and neither of us is too enthusiastic about this. Taking a record out from the shipment boxes, she asks, "Would you say this is disco or 90's funk?".

I take a moment to let my mind mentally wander throughout the album until I finally come to a conclusion, "Funk, but 80's funk. That one was in 1989." I point out, Steph takes my advice and flicks through the 80's funk crate looking for the correct place.

I continue to stack the few country CDs in front of me when a recognisable face enters the store.

"Gabe, you're back." I smile, happy to see the man back from his three-night hike.

"Nice to see you didn't get eaten by any wolves," Steph adds with a tired chuckle, her focus then returning to the records in front of her.

I'm glad you care so much about me, Stephy." He chuckles from behind, ensnaring the girl in a bear hug, watching as she struggles to free herself but fails miserably. Gabe looks down at me and says "I don't think you can get away." He teases, so I give in to the hug he was approaching me with.

"All right, okay, that's enough; you haven't been gone for ten years." I smile, back up from the man, and keep working.

He flips through some records next to Steph and asks, "So, are you two opening up now?".

She swats his hand away, "There are a lot more records and poster shipments than we expected." Sighing, she puts a vinyl into a plastic wallet.

Gabe scans the small table we had set up for anything he can touch or mess with to unintentionally annoy Steph. He plays with a few badges left on the edge, picking one up and pinning it to his jacket. Steph watches him struggle with the pin and huffs and she notices the design, "So, when were you going to tell us?" She asks.

Gabe looks up, giving her a confused look.

"That you're a lesbian." She gestures to the badge on his jacket, I can't help but giggle.

"Yeah, it's been really hard to deal with." He jokingly admits, taking it off and picking a new one that says 'zesty straight'. Then returning to finding something that'll annoy Steph.

He scans the pile of records until he lands on a certain album, "I'm guessing that's mine." He reaches for the Kings of Leon vinyl.

Steph swats his hand away, continuing to flick through the pile of many records. Gabe notices the silence in the room and takes it as his queue to bid his goodbyes. A few minutes pass, and Steph finally lets out a light huff, slowly walking over to me and planting a small kiss on my cheek, "I'm gonna go do some advertisements, phone calls, the usual. Feel free to take a break." She smiles lovingly. I give her a small peck on the lips in return before she strolls off to the studio.

I watch her from afar, chuckling into the mic as she cheerfully promotes some silly ad. I give the woman in the studio my full attention, completely mesmerised by her.

A muffled voice answered the phone, they chatted for a while before Steph put it down and waved for me to come over.

"Okay, this one?" she mouths, holding up a record, 'Norman Fucking Rockwell' by Lana Den Rey, up against the glass. "Or this one?" she continues to hold up 'Parklife' by Blur. Her head pokes out from behind the door. "Caller wanted someone besides me to pick something," she says.

After a few seconds of thinking, I turn around and hold up 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' as an example of an album that would bring a new touch to the radio station, "How about this?"

Steph pulls the record from me and says, "Perfect." Then leaves and I go back to sorting the endless stacks of country CDs, I mean come on, who listens to this shit.

I take a moment to reflect, and I realize that nothing could be better in my life. I have a job I love, a town I love, and a girlfriend I love. The thought of the DJ makes my heart flutter, she couldn't be more perfect. She is literally the anti-crease stuff to my shoes, the detergent to my washing machine, the needle to my turntable, she really brings out my poetic side.

I take a small peek over to the studio glass, I smile at the sight of Steph lightly swaying her hips and bopping her head to the mute song.

Last Night, Good Night, Dear Husband Mine

[Spoilers for CH 20]

[Scene: It’s been a few hours into the farewell party when MC realizes there is a missing brother. Taking care not to be noticed, they slip from the attic and instead wander the hall, hoping to find Lucifer soon. Then, from the secret study within the library, the faint sound of music floats by. They hesitate at the door, not sure if they should go in or go back to the attic.]

Lucifer: Instead of lurking outside, why don’t you come in?

MC: Ah! You caught me! 

Lucifer: Well, it wasn’t particularly hard not to, you weren’t being subtle in the slightest. Come, sit. It sounds like there is quite a party in the attic. And with everyone busy up there, I can stay here and enjoy my music in peace for once. 

MC: *sits down and tilts their head in thought* What is it you're listening to? It sounds familiar.

Lucifer: I’m not surprised you recognized it. It’s nice, don’t you think? It’s the cursed The Tale of the Seven Lords vinyl soundtrack, which you managed to get from Levi for me.

MC: Isn’t it the type of curse that says that you’ll die if you listen to it?

Lucifer: That’s right. I see you haven’t forgotten the story behind it. Still, while it is true that all the humans involved with its creation died under mysterious circumstances, it was nothing but a mere coincidence. And even if it was a cursed record, look who you are sitting with right now. You’re here chatting with one of the most powerful demons in the Devildom. So you don’t have anything to worry about, now do you. Simply put, it means that you can stay here with me a bit longer and welcome to stay and listen.

MC: Thanks Lucifer, I appreciate it.

Lucifer: …

MC: …

Lucifer: It was in this very room that I chose you for the exchange program. When you first arrived, I only welcomed you here for Lord Diavolo’s sake. I thought as long as you managed to survive a year here in the Devildom without any incidents, that was the best I could ask for. Even when things didn’t go as planned, as long as you weren’t eaten by lower-leveled demons, everything would be all right. At least, that’s what I thought...

Lucifer: *sighs* But somehow I managed to choose a troublemaker of a human that almost defies all belief, wouldn’t you say? There were many times when I have thought that I made a mistake choosing you.

MC: *with a small frown* That’s a little bit rude. And now? Was it a mistake?

Lucifer: *smirks* What do you think? I believe that you know the answer by now. In the end, you were the right choice for this program. You and your antics have kept me quite entertained over the past year. In fact, it was probably the most entertained I’ve been in centuries. 

MC: *smiles* I’m glad that I’ve kept you entertained. It seems like you needed it. 

Lucifer: Perhaps. So then, MC, have you finished all that you set to do here in the Devildom? No loose ends or unfinished business? 

MC: You know, I’ve still haven’t made a pact with you yet.

Lucifer: A pact? I see. You have made pacts with all my brothers. Truly, do you wish to make a pact with me? I don’t know how my brothers felt when they went about making a pact with you, but I am more than just another name to be crossed off your list. I will not have you lump me in together with everyone else. That won’t do. 

[Lucifer rises out of his seat quickly, easily transforming into his demonic form. MC, in response, also shoots up into a stand and stands their ground, easily staring back into Lucifer’s ruby red eyes.]

Lucifer: Ho? Not going to run, are you? You certainly have guts. That aspect of yours is something that I’ve found particularly irritating. But just as irritating it is, it’s even more endearing. Now listen here, and listen well human. *He leans forward and stares into MC’s eyes with a stern gaze* I will not your possession. I will not belong to you, you will belong to me. So, what will it be? Will you make a pact with me, MC?

MC: *steps forward and takes Lucifer’s hands into theirs* Of course, I’ll make a pact with you Lucifer. 

Lucifer: *a surprisingly gentle smile rests on his face as he kisses the top of MC’s hands* I am Lucifer, Avatar and Lord of Pride, the Oldest of the Seven Sins. By this name and blood shall our souls lay bound together. From now until the end of time, MC, you are mine.

[A flood of Infernal magic buried itself into MC’s soul, another claim inscribed deep. As he feels his magic lay claim to MC, Lucifer smirks, pulls away, and sits back down in his chair, his demon form once again hidden.]

Lucifer: Now then, I assume that takes care of everything then?

MC: *smirks in return and leans down towards Lucifer, both arms resting on the armrest of his chair essentially trapping him in his seat. And when Lucifer leans back slightly, their smirk grows* There is still something I have to do, Lucifer dearest.

Lucifer: *a small blush lights up his cheeks as his eyes widen slightly at the closeness* Oh? Is there?

MC: There is. *they lean forwards slowly as if waiting to see Lucifer’s reaction before properly leaning in to kiss him*

Lucifer: *he melts into the kiss before pulling away slightly* MC… I’ve always known that you wanted to do this. I wonder how long you have waited.

MC: *laughs softly* That’s something I’ll never tell Lucifer. Or should I say husband dearest?

Lucifer: Husband, huh? I suppose that makes you my spouse as well. And I believe you know what married couples do on their wedding nights? 

MC: *they smile and shift their weight onto one hand, the other gently running up his arm up towards his shoulder.* Luci, I believe that you have it wrong. I don’t belong to you. This pact is of us two at an equal standing. 

MC: *their fingers skim the little skin showing on Lucifer’s neck before grabbing hold of his tie and pulling him closer* So listen well, husband mine. I am more than happy to “consummate” our marriage. But remember that you don’t own me. I have long known of your desire for me and we won’t be leaving this room until morning. Is that alright with you dearest?

Lucifer: *smiles softly as he pulls them in for another kiss* I wouldn’t have it any other way love.

Everyone told you to watch out, everyone warned you about him, Lee Jeno. You and Jeno weren’t in the same friend group, you were as what society called an “art freak” with streaks of colors in your hair and black eyeliner. You also always kept guitar picks with you, always wanting to sneak into the music room and practice on the electric guitar. The wannabe’s compared you to an Avril Lavigne-type girl. Your best friends were also your bandmates, supportive of you and your dream, unlike your parents. You and your parents had a deal, as long as you kept good grades you could continue to play music as a “hobby.” 

You also worked at a music store, which is how you ran into Lee Jeno. He was looking for vinyl of a specific artist which happened to also be one of your favorites so you knew exactly where it was. He thanked you and you hoped that would be the last you’d see him. But he came in every day to talk to you and eventually had the courage to approach your lunch table. All your bandmates glared at Lee Jeno, knowing his reputation and his motives. Once he left they’d all trash him for trying to talk to you. 

“y/n you shouldn’t really associate with him.”

“Yeah, all of his ‘fangirls’ will tear you to shreds.”

“Jeno hits and runs, you better stop talking to him before it turns into something dangerous. You’ll only get hurt.”

You didn’t think much of their words, since Jeno wasn’t really your type anyway. There’s no way you could ever fall for him. Oh boy, were you wrong. Jeno went out of his way to swoon you in any way he could. He’d walk you home at night, visit you in the music room and at work, he’d even invite you to his lunch table where you’d be met with his other ‘bad boy’ friends. He would get you your favorite coffee, just the way you like it, and get your lunch order so you wouldn’t wait in line. All of this attention grabbed the attention of his fangirls, constantly threatening you about how “Jeno is mine!” and bullshit like that. You honestly didn’t care because you reassured them you and Jeno were not dating. 

That was until he invited you to a party, saying that you could meet his one friend that was also into music and could help you break out into the music industry. You agreed, excited to meet someone in the industry. When you arrived at the party, you met his friend who worked at Columbia Records, you bonded and everything got his contact information in hopes of getting an internship. Jeno met up with you again, asking you to repay him, in a game of fear pong (beer pong with truth or dare elements). You agreed, joining him on his team against Johnny and his girlfriend. One of the dares you guys had to do was make out for one minute or drink. You were about to drink when Jeno grabbed your face and started to make out with you. 

God, did he taste good. His lips were soft brushing against yours the taste of beer and light cigarette smoke made his lips only more addictive. Everyone watching was hooting and hollering at the two of you. Jeno licked the bottom of your lip, which you opened your mouth to let his tongue enter, causing your tongues to fight for dominance. Jeno’s ultimately dominated and touched your throat. You gave a small moan which only made Jeno kiss you harder. Johnny coughed causing you two to stop. 

“You realize you two were making out for like 5 minutes right?” Johnny laughed.

You pulled away but Jeno held on to you by your waist.

That made you blush. You guys continued the game and you and Jeno won, out of excitement (and slight intoxication) you kissed Jeno. He looked at you in shock and you apologized before he kissed you back. Since that game, you two were attached to the hip the whole night. Jeno didn’t feel safe letting you go home so he let you sleep with him in a bedroom upstairs. When you guys were tucking in for the night he wrapped his arm around you pulling you closer to him. 

“y/n, I love you.”

You giggled “You’re drunk Jeno...get some rest.”

“No, I mean it.”

“You’re really funny.”

“Do you need me to prove it to you?” He spoke in a deep voice, shifting his body to hover above yours. 

“If I didn’t love you do you think I’d be feeling like this right now?” Jeno whispered into your ear. When he leaned down you felt his member rock hard against your thigh.

“Hey y/n?” One of your bandmates asked. 

“Battle of the bands' championship for the school is coming up, do you know what song we are going to cover?”

You looked at Jeno. “Oh, I fucking know what song we are going to sing.” 

You and your bandmates got the sheet music for good 4 u by Olivia Rodrigo and practiced it until it became natural for everyone. Finally, the battle of the bands' championship occurred. It was hosted by your school to fundraise for the music program and scholarships. Before your group came up, you all huddled, and they all gave you the words of encouragement you needed to perform in front of Lee Jeno.

“Kill him with those words.”

“Make him feel like the shit head he is.”

As they hyped you up, you felt much better as you all walked out to stand on the stage. You saw Jeno in the crowd with his new supposed girlfriend. You began playing the first notes on the guitar. 

Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily You found a new girl and it only took a couple weeks Remember when you said that you wanted to give me the world?

You stared right into his eyes singing every lyric, letting him know what a scumbag he was for dating someone new in a few weeks when he confessed to you after he fucked your brains out. What kind of a person does that?

You raised your hand and pointed right at him and his new girl who looked like every other bitch who wanted to get with Jeno, you couldn’t compare to her, you had to show Jeno he made a mistake leaving you for $100. You sang you heart out to those lyrics almost feeling emotional. How could Jeno sit there with a smile on his face while you almost crying during this set. You then realized Lee Jeno is an emotionless piece of shit. But just this once, you wanted to see him cry.

It wasn’t fair that you cried endless tears, while Jeno came to school with a smile on his face. Your eyes would be dark and baggy from all the crying and endless sleep, but he came to school happier and brighter than ever, fuck you Lee Jeno. 

It's like we never even happened Baby, what the fuck is up with that?

Everyone forgot about you and Jeno the moment he dropped you. How come everyone took his side and let this slide past everyone? Did no one care about how you felt? How humiliated you were? How can someone forget something like that?

Jeno and you became strangers, nobodies, to each other just back at square one, how did this happen? He would complain about how his friends would make fun of his music tastes and hobbies, making you think you were the only one who understood him and supported him. You wanted to make him feel guilt and shame for toying with you.

You’ve thought about how you were the problem, that Jeno didn’t want you for you. He would act reassuring when you were in bed, but once he left you, he brushed off every concern you had. He never had any feelings for you. He never cared about you. 

Before the final chorus you pulled out a picture of you and Jeno printed out on paper and one of your bandmates set it on fire. The picture of Jeno’s face starting to well up with tears when everyone in the gym started to stare at him. It was music to your ears.

You were now crying in the last chorus not out of sadness but out of joy, finally, Lee Jeno knows what it’s like to have his heartbroken. All of the other girls and guys were screaming and singing along with you, you were jumping and high-fiving all of them, rocking out to the music. Your mascara was dripping down your cheeks and you looked emotional and powerful. 

Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily

As you played the last chord on your guitar everyone was cheering. You thanked everyone for the performance as your group hugged your bandmates thanking them for getting you through the performance. You turned to look at Jeno one last time to see him crying. It was beautiful.
