EDIT 1-25-24: THIS POST IS OUTDATED. WE GOT A RELEASE DATE REVEAL YESTERDAY AND I MADE THIS POST A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE TRAILER RELEASED.
So, I've been seeing folks have been goin' nuts about Side Order's release date lately (hell, I am too. I preordered this DLC almost a year ago and now I feel dumb for preordering this thing a year in advance lmao), speculating on when the DLC will ultimately come out. I'm sure some of you are aware of a recent datamine revealing a potential release date for the DLC and I'd like to address that in this post.
I think the dataminers might be right on this one! I truely believe there's a decent chance this glorious DLC will finally release on February 29th! So far, dataminers who've looked through the game's files have had a decent track record when it comes to predicting stuff (the skelly fish bois from Side Order, the whole idea of going up the Spire of Order in Side Order, Splattercolor Screen & Triple Splashdown coming to the game, ect), so I wouldn't be suprised if this was true as well. Also, may I remind all of you of all those strands of code for Side Order that were uncovered during the begining of Chill Season 2023? That was A LOT of code. Also, those pieces of Splatoon 2 gear weren't delayed another season again. Hell, more Splatoon 2 gear was ported into the game some time ago!
Also, a February 29th release date would be SUPER fitting for Side Order. The Order Sector Inkopolis Square exists simultaniously with the real Inkopolis Square (assuming that Side Order is in fact taking place in a digital world, which is most likely the case) and February 29th is basically just February 28th and March 1st simultaniously happening at the same time. Perfect oppertunity for the devs to release the DLC. The DLC will not only release the same time the Fresh Season 2024 update drops but the release date would make sense with the story of the DLC or whatever.
Sure, I'm probably on LOTS of copium right now, but I really do feel like the DLC will be coming out towards the end of next month. So far, Splatoon dataminers have had a decent track record when it comes to uncovering stuff being added to the game, so I trust them when it comes to this info.
But hey, we'll see what happens. A Nintendo Direct will more likely than not come out next month and we still need a release date reveal for the DLC, so it won't be long until we find out when this DLC will come out. The dataminers could be right. They could be wrong. I guess we won't find out until next month :)

Here it is! Thank you to @frog-man-moments and @flamingskull28 for the idea for this!
Frye stomped down hard on an amp that she’d just knocked to the ground. Shiver did the same with the contents of a nearby bar. “How you like that, greenie?” she shouted backstage where Acht was waiting.
“You shoulda known better than to play a show on our turf!” Frye yelled.
It was only fifteen minutes before the doors opened and the place was a mess. There were crowds waiting outside, excited to see Acht perform. There was no way they’d be able to clean up the club and get Shiver and Frye to leave before the VIP guests were let in. They would have to delay the show.
Four marched past Acht, not saying a word. They were pissed. The ⅔ of Deep Cut present was about to face Acht’s partner’s wrath. Then again, they deserved it. Acht had made it clear several times that they weren’t looking for petty competition and the two had not listened in the slightest. Maybe it would be good to let Four give them hell for a little bit. The splatnet would never let them live down getting their asses kicked by a lesbian orange.
Four strode out onto the stage, facing the two singers. “Alright, here’s what’s going to happen. You two are going to clean up your mess and leave this club within the next fifteen minutes, or I’m going to make you.”
“Oh how cute, the lovesick security guard wants to defend their crush.” Shiver spoke in a condescending tone, mocking Four. Acht and Four’s relationship had been public for some time now. Yet Shiver had referenced the short trend of people on the internet assuming that Four was only protective of Acht because they wanted to impress them. Most of the people who believed this quieted down once Four accidentally revealed their relationship to the public, but Shiver wouldn’t let it die.
“Alright, kid. Give me your best shot,” Frye said, overconfident.
“My pleasure.” Four dropped to the floor, sweeping their leg beneath Frye’s, causing her to go toppling to the ground. She fell into a microphone stand nearby.
“Beginner’s luck,” she grumbled, jumping to her feet. She tried to tackle Four in retaliation. They dodged to the side, sending Frye flying past them.
Shiver, looking to avenge her comrade, rushed over to Four and drove her elbow into their gut. Four stumbled back, clutching where they’d been hit. Shiver took her chance to deal another blow, now attempting to kick Four in the side. Four recovered from her first strike quickly, now able to catch her leg as she threw it at them. They twisted it the wrong way around, and Shiver let out a small yelp as they did. But Four had been so focused on Shiver that they hadn’t noticed Frye behind them. She pulled them into a headlock, forcing them to release Shiver’s leg.
“Let this be a lesson, you don’t mess with Deep Cut.” Frye spoke into Four’s ear.
Shiver stood up slowly, careful not to put weight on her hurt leg. “Now we’ll consider letting you go,” she paused, clearly trying to create a dramatic effect, “if your little partner will agree to not playing any more shows in Splatsville.” She opened her fan, holding it next to her face in a show of triumph.
Four sneered. They were not going to give up that easily. But they knew Acht was ready to rush out and agree to Deep Cut’s terms if it meant they would be safe. They had to think of something soon or else– shing! Their special charged. Perfect timing. They grinned at the two idols before launching themself into the air and out of Frye’s grip. The markers for where their triple splashdown would land grew around Shiver and Frye.
“Oh shi–” was all that either of them could say before the ink engulfed them.
As Four landed, they could hear a distant voice approaching from near the doors.
“Ay, ay, ay ay. (Excuse me, I’m sorry, I think my bandmates are in there.)” Big Man pushed his way through the doors, spying Shiver and Frye laying on the ground, covered in ink. “Ay ay? (What did you two do now?)”
The two got to their feet quickly, rushing to leave.
“We’re sorry, we’ll be going now!” Frye called as she bolted for the door.
“Yes, I think it's time we get out of here. Come on, Big Man!” Shiver yelled, following Frye.
Big Man sighed, then turned to Four. “Ay ay ay. Ay ay, ay. (I’m so sorry about them. If there’s any way I can make it up to you, just ask.)”
“Well actually–” Four began.
“That’s okay, thank you for the offer.” Acht walked out on stage, joining Four.
Big Man waved as he walked out of the club.
“They didn’t help clean up,” Four said, anger still littering their voice.
“We’ll get the security team on it. I’ll have Dani tell the audience that the show will start a little late today. You need to get some rest.”
“But I want to help.”
Acht raised a hand to Four’s already bruised torso. “You’re hurt. Take the night off.”
“No, the show’s going to start and you’ll need me there!”
Acht took off their glasses, exposing their big yellow eyes. “Please?”
“Damnit,” Four grumbled. “How dare you use your beautiful eyes on me.”
“I got a video of the whole fight, want to spam Deep Cut’s dms with it?”
“Absolutely!”
with fuzzy four, can you imagen how different the incident with deep would be?
Definitely a lot more biting and scratching. Four would end up drawing a lot of blood on both Shiver and Frye. In the original version, Four knows to stop once it's clear they've had enough, but now Acht has to physically stop Four from ripping of Deep Cut's limbs.
Thank you for the ask!!! I did actually write a short story about the Deep Cut scenario (with normal Four, fuzzy Four didn't exist when I wrote it), but never got around to posting it. If anyone is interested maybe I will 👀

Bread’s Skate (?!) Journal 09/06/20: The Other Ones: A Look Back On The Tony Hawk Imitators Of The Early 2000's....And BMX XXX.
Tumblr media
Looking back at Tony Hawk as a series that's pretty solidly in the past can cause someone to easily forget how those games were actually thought of at the time: Hyper popular.  As a result of that popularity, it was easy to see a bunch of other games and franchises that wanted a piece of that money, some from Activision themselves, some....very much not.  Some of these games were good!  Some of these games were so bad that they've become something of a legendary laughing stock in the game landscape as a whole.
As I said, Activision was no stranger to trying to apply the Tony Hawk formula to other sports in an attempt to cash in on the extreme success of their franchise.  Sometimes these cash in's actually made for decent, if unoriginal games.  Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX was more or less a carbon copy of the Tony Hawk formula, but with BMX Bikes instead of Skateboards, and it actually worked pretty well once you got used to the inherent differences of the two different styles.  Other attempts were not quite as fortunate as Matt Hoffman though, and both of them sort of had the same "downhill" problem.   Shaun Palmers Pro Snowboarder was an attempt to put the Tony Hawk formula into a snowboarding game, and while that should reasonably work, the linear and all downhill nature of the levels really didn't lend themselves to a fun time.
Following from Shaun Palmer was "Wakeboarding Unleashed featuring Shaun Murray" which is quite a title!  It was originally revealed with the far more descriptive name as "Shaun Murray's Pro Wakeboarder" but I have to assume that was changed to...distance the game from Tony Hawk?  It's a confusing move to say the least.  The game was actually quite decent, more so than you'd assume from something like a wakeboarding game, and you can tell there was some talent behind it, the games issue was that, by design, it was pretty much always on rails.  You were literally pulled through the levels behind a speed boat, and even though there was plenty to trick off, it lent a feeling that you were just being guided to the cool set pieces rather than actually doing any exploration of your own, it deserved better.  Hell, it at least deserves it's own Wikipedia page, the only mention of it at all is on Shaun Murray's very small Wikipedia entry, an ignoble end for a game that least tried something new.
Tumblr media
I had to find a screenshot for Shaun Murray, which I swear is real, and this is the only one I could easily find online.  I swear this game happened!
Of course Activision wasn't the only studio trying to capitalize on the extreme sports craze and the Tony Hawk trick heavy style.  EA found what I would consider the greatest success with franchises like SSX, and one entry wonders like Freakstyle (which is a seminal game for me as a kid, but one I feel very few people even know exist), a sort of blend of SSX and racing through the lens of Motocross.  Hell, eventually EA would make Skate, which outlived Tony Hawk itself for a few years, and I already wrote about earlier this week, an excellent franchise that was nonetheless heavily inspired by THPS.
Now, there are far more imitators and hanger on's, some good (Splashdown, while closer to Wave Race, definitely stole some of it's vibes from THPS). Some incredibly bad (Gravity Games: Vert, Street, Dirt,  an abysmally bad Tony Hawk ripoff from the early 2000's immediately springs to mind) and some downright strange (Four words: Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure).  But only one company tried so hard and failed so miserably, and that's Acclaim, and BMX XXX.
Tumblr media
This is genuinely what some of the worst impulses of the video game industry look like.
Acclaim had found success early on by getting Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX out only one year after Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and it certainly wasn't a terrible game.  It felt a little clunkier than what came out of Neversoft at the time, but it was definitely playable.  Acclaim also went on to put out Aggressive Inline, which, while it might sound insane to say about an inline skating video game, is genuinely one of the best extreme sports games ever made.  So Acclaim had real reason to believe they actually could put something out that would rival Tony Hawk!  Then they put out BMX XXX.
BMX XXX is one of the most insipidly stupid things that any company has ever produced, certainly one of the worst video games ever made, and was so bad that Dave Mirra forced Acclaim to take his name off of it before release.  You really can boil this game down to two things: Dave Mirra's okay BMX game play, and the horn-dog mindset of a 13 year old boy that just found an issue of Hustler in the woods.  It's incredibly embarrassing!  Full of hookers, pimps, literal strip club videos, dogs fucking and humor that was shitty and mean spirited even by the standards of 2004.  It's astounding that anybody thought this game would sell at all, let alone do the impressive numbers they wanted for it.  Even the console manufacturers didn't really seem to want this thing on their consoles, Sony out and out censored the nudity even (which yes, the game featured full polygonal breasts, and they are horrifying to look at today), and though the other two allowed the nudity to slide, they made it pretty clear they thought the game was terrible.
BMX XXX is a punchline today, rightfully, but I think it did so much harm to the idea of a competing extreme sports franchise, that any further attempt to really hone in on an Tony Hawk alike just sort of stopped right there.  It actually came out pretty early on, in 2002, long before some of the other games I've mentioned on this list even, but the damage it did was impossible to ignore.  Activision kept trying, we still got the occasional excellent SSX game, and we got Skate.  Hell, we even got Ubisoft making a couple of tries, first with Shaun White doing a snowboarding and Skateboarding game, then with Steep.  The concept wasn't killed entirely, a favorite of mine, Amped 3 for Xbox 360, even came out just a few years later, but it felt like the spirit was gone, and it never really came back.  Thankfully, these days, we have more independent developers putting out their own vision of what an extreme sports game can be.  I hope this new generation of developers can really get us back to the glory days of the extreme sports game, and even if they don't end up making it too far, at least they're going to try.

And things might get a little weird.

Apollo 11 at 50
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and moon landing, here’s a selection of records from our collections related to NASA and this historic event.
A 1973 Congressional Research Service analysis of his voting record reported that “Gerald Ford has consistently and unwaiveringly throughout his career supported the space program.” That began with the creation of the NASA. Representative Ford served as a member of the Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration, and was also one of the conferees that helped draft the final version of the National Aeronautics and Space Act on 1958 that made NASA a reality.
While in Congress Ford also served on the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, which sometimes examined related space issues. He and Representative George Mahon of Texas visited the then recently completed NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (now known as the Johnson Space Center) in Houston, Texas, with NASA Administrator James E. Webb on April 27, 1964.

(Ford Scrapbook Photograph AV82-18-1145)
At the time NASA was working on both the Gemini Project and Project Apollo, its second and third manned spaceflight programs. The group met with Dr. Robert Gilruth, the MSC’s director, as well as Gordon Cooper and Deke Slayton, two of the Mercury Seven astronauts. Their tour of the facilities included a stop in the Crew Systems Division, where they received a briefing on space suits.
Building on successes and lessons learned during the Gemini Project and early Apollo missions, NASA planned to make the first moon landing with Apollo 11. Their preparations included deciding what items should be left on the moon to commemorate the mission. They created a small silicon disc that contained microphotoprints of good will messages from 73 heads of state from around the world, as well as messages from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. NASA Administrator T. O. Paine wrote to Representative Ford about the disc since his name appeared on it as part of a list of Congressional leaders.
Tumblr media
(Letter from NASA Administrator T. O. Paine to Representative Gerald R. Ford, 7/11/1969, from the Ford Congressional Papers, Box B147, folder “Space, 1969″)
“In the final days before the launch of Apollo 11, my thoughts have turned repeatedly to the importance of the support NASA has received from the Congress over the years,” Paine wrote. “Placing on the disc the names of the present leadership and Committee members is a small effort to signalize the fact that the support of the people through their elected representatives has been and will continue to be an essential ingredient to the success of man’s exploration and utilization of space.”
Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969. People around the world watched four days later as Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon on July 20. Gerald Ford and his family viewed the moon landing in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. When he returned to Washington, DC, on July 22 Ford entered a statement about the successful mission into the Congressional Record.

Representative Gerald R. Ford News Release with his statement regarding the Apollo 11 Mission, 7/22/1969
“Let us all salute Neil Armstrong, Ed Aldrin and Mike Collins and pray for a safe splashdown in the Pacific on Thursday. But let us also say a prayer for Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom and Ed White and pay tribute to them for the heroic contribution they made so that Eagle might land on the moon and return to planet earth,” he said. Astronauts Chaffee, Grissom, and White had died in a fire during a pre-launch test for Apollo 1 in 1967. Ford had a special connection to Chaffee since he was also from Grand Rapids. Nevertheless, Ford felt that the Apollo program had been worth it. “With the successful flight of Apollo 11 the United States has opened up the universe for all the peoples of the earth,” he stated. “I believe our moon journey has kindled a new feeling of pride in country in all our citizens – a new and much-needed patriotism, if you will.”

Representative Ford had a chance to congratulate the Apollo 11 crew in person when they visited with members of Congress on September 16, 1969. He, Representative Carl Albert, and Speaker of the House John McCormack shook hands with Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong.
Ford also introduced a bill in August 1969 that would authorize the minting of a commemorative half-dollar coin to honor the Apollo 11 mission and astronauts. He felt that the the coin would recognize President Kennedy as well. “We all recall that it was Jack Kennedy who in ringing tones told the world America would put men on the moon before the end of this decade. We have realized that dream,” he said. “I think Jack Kennedy would have been proud to have a moon flight half-dollar memorialize the reaching of his goal.” Unfortunately, the bill was never passed.

As President, Ford met Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins again on July 1, 1976, when he attended the dedication of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Collins, then the Museum’s director, gave President Ford and Vice President Rockefeller a tour of the newly completed exhibits.

As President Ford said in his remarks at the dedication of the National Air and Space Museum, “The amazing American achievements in air and space tell us something even more important about ourselves on earth. The hallmark of the American adventure has been a willingness – even an eagerness – to reach for the unknown.”

The Final Fight
(Part 6)
—————
I awaken to the blinding hospital lights.
Ack! They kind of burn!
And my trainee, who I’ve believed in so much,
Collapsed on the ground.....
What have I been up to?
—————
Emmy stumbled a little. “My head feels like goop...did something happen?”
She looked over her shoulder at Millie. “Oh my Cod. M-Millie!!”
She bent over. “I think she’s- Oh my Cod, is she-?!”
“Relax.” Pris said, grabbing Millie’s arm and feeling her pulse. “She’s not dead. But she’s probably going to need some extra rest and ink. It looks her her wounds opened back up on her arm.”
“Leave it to me.” Octan said, picking her up. “I’ll get her to the closest hospital.”
“Not so fast!” Frederick growled, swinging the control room door open. “You are not just going to up and leave! You pesky teenagers!”
“Some of us aren’t teens-“ Marie began sarcastically.
“SHUT UP! I didn’t ask for your two sense, miss!”
“Father! You cannot control the world! It’s impossible! And nobody wants you to be leader of anything.” Aster complained.
“Boy, since you betrayed the DU, you no longer have any say in the matter.” Tanner stepped out. “In other words, mind your own business, and leave the work to the adults.”
Aster looked about ready to tackle him. “You know, I’ve always hated you, Tanner. You were always so snarky.”
“Emmy!” Seanna ran over to her and whispered. “We can’t leave without destroying the lab equipment and taking down Frederick!”
“Fine. I like a little challenge.” Emmy said. “Aqua! Alf! Pris! Get ready!!”
“Got it!”
“Alright!”
“On your word, Emmy!”
“You four children? Hah! Don’t make me laugh!” Tsubaki cackled.
“To you, we’re kids. But to the rest of the world.....” Emmy pulled out her hero dualies. “We’re the strongest team that ever existed.”
“Let’s go!”
Aqua ran forward, masking herself in the ink of the burst bombs and making her way towards Tsubaki. Tsubaki then pulled out her prototype splattershot, aiming at her.
“Silly child! You cannot hope to save your pathetic world!”
“I recognize that kind of talk. You programmed the brainwash device, right? You made Emmy talk like that. And she never talks like that!” Aqua dodged the shot of ink and climbed on top of a table. “You really shouldn’t mess with her or best friend!”
She jumps and activated Splashdown, right above Tsubaki. Tsubaki doesn’t have enough time to move. “Argh!! No!”
SPLAT!!
Alf swings his brush at Tanner. Tanner falls back and pushes Alf away with a shot from his e-liter. “Carp! I can’t get close enough!”
“Then leave it to me.” Pris answered, hiding behind a desk and charging her shot.
“Poor kiddos! You’ll never understand true science. Now come out here and fight!”
“Alright then. You’ll get your wish.....”
She ducked into her ink, her charge still on hold, and snuck around behind him. She then emerged, the laser traced on him.
He slowly turned his head to see.
“Sorry.” She smirked before releasing the trigger.
SPLAT!!
Frederick was cornered by Emmy. Since he’s never used any ink weapons, he doesn’t have any on him.
“Just you and me old man. You didn’t really expect to pull my family apart and get away with it, did you?”
“Grrk...!”
“You shouldn’t have messed with me. Or my life. That’s karma, isn’t it?”
She kicked him against a wall, him groaning in pain. Then he was silent.
Aster grimaced at the sight. Sure, he hated his father with all his heart, but.....he was still his father.
“Seanna! Bash your splatling on that computer server over there! That’s where all the research is!”
Seanna nodded, then proceeded to smash the tall blinking server into bits. She noticed some more of those devices that was attached to Emmy’s ink tank, and destroyed those as well by throwing them on the ground.
“Let’s go!” Aster exclaimed.
—————
Millie woke up, the sound of a heart monitor and the smell of hospital sheets. Everyone was surrounding her bed.
“.....Am I in trouble...?”
“Oh, you have no idea.” Marie chuckled out of anger. “But I’ll let it slide. You saved Emmy and sacrificed your own energy.”
Everyone rejoiced at the sight of Millie’s survival, while Octa looked out the window. Jesse sat in a chair next to her. “We did it. Can you believe it?”
“I....really can’t. I have a really bad feeling. Like we didn’t fully stop it.” She said.
“But Frederick is.....” Theo paused. “He can’t do anything anymore.”
“My gut is telling me otherwise. I think he’s still alive.”
“One can only hope he isn’t......”

THEY MADE ME do it. Everybody implored me to finally go and watch “Sully,” the Clint Eastwood-directed movie starring Tom Hanks as U.S. Airways captain Chesley Sullenberger, guardian angel of flight 1549, the engineless Airbus that splashed into the Hudson River eight years ago. When the movie was first released, back in September, I refused to see it. I’d watched too many big-screen butcher jobs — the chokingly awful “Flight,” for example, with Denzel Washington — and didn’t need the aggravation. But then the testimonials started coming in, boasting of the film’s surprising levels of accuracy and authenticity. This, I was told again and again, is the rare Hollywood movie that gets the pilot stuff right.
Why do I listen to these people? The screening took place at my friend Todd’s home theater. Todd, like me, is an airline pilot who flies 767s. Todd was a good viewing partner because, like me, he was skeptical from the start, but also because he’s less of a crank and was bound to keep me in check when my complaints got too whiny or pedantic. Except, in the end, neither of us much liked the movie. Cue 96 minutes of commiserative eye-rolling and sporadic laughter.
If there’s a saving grace, it’s that the cockpit scenes are brief. So far as that “pilot stuff” goes, there’s just not enough of it to really get it wrong. The silliest scene, to me, is the reenactment of the takeoff sequence, where we see Sully and his first officer, Jeff Skiles (played by Aaron Eckhart, whose bushy ‘stache, I have to say, is groovily pilot-like), gazing out the window as their jet climbs away. The cockpit is eerily silent, as if the engines have somehow already quit, and the two men chat lazily about the beauty of the Gotham skyline in winter. Realism grade: F-minus. The first few minutes after takeoff are about the busiest portion of any flight. There’s a lot going on, from the flap retraction sequence to various turns and climb segments. And there’s a ton of radio chatter. It’s a very noisy, task-intensive several minutes, especially out of an airport like LaGuardia. Then come the geese. And there go the engines. Skiles, who was at the controls, gives the jet over to Sully, who gets the heroics going. Skiles then consults the QRH and begins an oddly stilted reading of the emergency checklist (a little too emotionless and flat, though apparently true to the CVR, wordage-wise). And, a couple of minutes later, we get the splashdown into the icy river, digitally rendered in a manner that strikes me as probably more violent and forceful than it was in real life.
Later — indeed for most of the movie — the bad-guy investigators are on Sully’s ass about his decision to ditch in the water rather than attempt a return to LGA. As part of their complaint, they make the point, several times, that one of the plane’s engines hadn’t totally failed, but had remained at idle thrust. The implication here is that an idling engine would’ve helped get them back to the airport. This made no sense either to me or to Todd, as idle thrust is just that: idle. It produces little or no push, and wouldn’t have been useful. What were they saying here, that the pilots could have pushed up the throttle and found more power? It’s not clear. (In any case, it wasn’t true. As Sully contested, the engine had been wrecked, though investigators, and in turn viewers, don’t learn this until the very end.)
The whole return-to-La Guardia question has irked me from the start. Simulator experiments show that flight 1549 could have made it back to the airport. But this assumed ideal conditions and instantaneous decision-making, including a well-rehearsed crew that knew exactly what was about to happen. The real-world scenario was a lot messier, as these things always are. Sullenberger weighed the options. Sure, they might have made it back. But if he was wrong — even a small wind shift could throw off the glide — the result would be an Airbus A320 crashing headlong into one of the most populated areas of New York City. Landing in the water was hardly ideal, but it was the best and safest choice. I was also introduced a magical new term that in all my years of flying I’d never heard before: “sub-idle.” The engine was at “sub-idle.” Presumably this is something even less useful than idle? So why are we hearing about it? “What the heck is ‘sub-idle’?” I said to Todd. “Is Tom Hanks’ hair really that gray,” answered Todd. “Or did they just color it that way?” “Why is there so much trouble in the world?” I said, quoting my favorite line from “Blue Velvet.” We were getting punchy. It was all a little much.
Of course, “Sully” isn’t a movie about flying. The cockpit sequences are almost incidental. It’s about Sullenberger the man, and his weathering of the investigation that followed. On this count, however, the movie fails harder. Eastwood gives us Sully as a kind of everyman American hero, in battle with obstructive bureaucrats trying to railroad him. But according to those who were there, that’s simply not how things played out.
“The portrayal of the NTSB investigators in the new ‘Sully’ movie as prosecutors is not only wildly inaccurate but grossly unfair,” said Mark Dombroff, an aviation lawyer who represented U.S. Airways during the investigation.
Folks at the NTSB, which is about the most highly respected government agency that exists, have been no less critical. I received an email from Robert Benzon, Investigator-In-Charge of the board’s inquiry into the flight 1549 accident. “This movie will hinder the success of future NTSB investigations,” wrote Benzon, “because of its incredibly inaccurate depiction of how such investigations are conducted. The NTSB needs the cooperation of all investigation participants: aircraft and engine manufactures, airline operators, the FAA, employee unions, and very importantly flight crewmembers. ‘Sully’ was a step backward.”
Ouch. Watching the movie, this resentment is easy to understand. The investigators are shown as caricatured villains, hostile to a point that simply isn’t believable. And the ridiculous, time-compressed version of the review board’s final hearing, in the film’s closing minutes, during which Sully is vindicated and everybody goes home happy, is nothing if not goofy — a contrived, Disneyfied portrayal that mocks the actual investigators’ hard work and dedication.
When Todd flicked off the screen, we turned and smirked at each other. We were, suffice it to say, underwhelmed.
