Shout out to the girl in one of my classes in undergrad who called the Iliad “Military propaganda.” I think about you daily
#I am still so utterly baffled and entranced by the weird bubble you need to enhabit to think that a poem written over 2000 years ago#about a culture that is utterly alien to you is Military Propoganda in the same way you might say that about a Marvel Movie#And there certainly is glorification of war in the Iliad. But the poem is also unflinchingly brutal about the terrible things that happen.#Like how did you read the fiftieth description of a man getting his jaw pierced all the way through with a spearhead and then the bit about#a mother mourning her son so violently that she wishes she could eat his killer’s liver raw and think ‘Hmmm. Looks like Uncle Sam to me.’#I hope she’s doing all right lmao. She’s probably in one of my grad classes tbh#the iliad
