Elves are vegetarians because of compassion, and because they feel living things around them. Eating a root vegetable causes the plant's death. Does that mean that they can eat only certain types of root vegetables? Potato and sweet potato plants can survive the removal of the potato, so that should be fine, but carrot, onion, celery root, beetroot etc. dies when you remove the root. Unless you wait until they are done with seed-making, because then the plant dies anyway. On the contrary, by that time they all become hard, stiff, basically flavourless and unpleasant to eat in general.
Is it possible that elves use those root vegetables as spice only? Or did they become very good at cultivating double-rooted vegetables (something that humans worked very hard for millenniums to get rid of) so they can eat one of the roots and then put back the plant into the earth since it would survive?
