I revisit it often, falling back into this world. dreaming of this steve. story is so witty, funny and hot while also remaining tender in many moments. Also, simply the best - the title is pretty self-explanatory because the story is already that…simply the best. It’s ongoing but I am already hooked. a brief retrospective on Louis and Violet as love interests, Clementine's bisexuality, and the fandom's continued insistence on fighting over this

In December of 2019, I made a series of posts called "An Explanation of Why Louis and Violet are Both Excellent Love Interests" that explored my feelings on the topic after seeing a lot of fighting in the fandom over who's better; who is the "right" choice for Clementine?
The answer is simple: there isn't an objectively correct choice.
I compared Louis and Violet to the romantic options in other games, including Life is Strange, Persona 4, King's Quest 2015, and Catherine, as well as TWDG: A New Frontier. I wanted to show how much better TFS handled the romance versus those games, why we should be grateful for what we got since it could've been a lot worse, and how the fighting over who's "right" was a waste of time.
I suppose it's only fitting that I'd be driven to revisit this topic after seeing fans continue to argue amongst themselves over this years later in the trenches of a weakening fandom.
Just when I think I'm done writing pieces for TWDG, some random redditor writes an essay about how violentine only exists for "woke points" that grabs me by the throat and throws me down. Then another will insist that clouis is abusive since Louis voted against them in ep2 in their own essay and I'm dragged back here, kicking and screaming.
While I think my previous Excellent Love Interests posts about this are on the juvenile side, I do still agree with my main point: Louis and Violet are excellent characters who make for compelling love interests. The fact that we got them both, that we were given the choice, and that they're as well done as they are, is something I don't think we appreciate enough. Hell, I don't think we even appreciate that Clementine's a canonically bisexual protagonist as much as we should.
We're too busy trying to one up each other with, "Well, actually, clouis is superior because of this and this," and "no, you're wrong, violentine is actually better because of this and this," and sometimes a wild non-shipper will appear out of nowhere to slap down an, "actually, you both suck, singletine is better."
It's sad that this is what fandom inevitably defaults to, always. It stops being about the game we love, the thing that brought us here, and it becomes a pissing match.
Doesn't matter what fandom it is; we end up projecting too much of ourselves onto fictional characters, investing too much of our time into ship culture, hyper-fixating until it becomes part of us... and let's be real, sometimes it's in unhealthy ways.
So, when someone else attacks the things we're attached to, it becomes a personal attack... and when we feel threatened, we become defensive and retaliate... and sometimes, we take it too far and target others out of insecurity, to feel validated, even if it means going after someone who is just minding their own business.
Also, I think some people are just assholes who want to piss on everyone.
Because of this, I would like to discuss Louis and Violet as romanceable characters, why they're both important to TFS no matter who you choose, why Clementine being a bisexual protagonist matters, and the fandom's continued insistence on fighting over this.

For many personal reasons, I've always been trepid about being open with my sexuality as a bi woman. I've done a lot of reflection this year on why that is; internalized misogyny, the biphobia that lingers in the queer community, insecurities, regrets, how I tend to be harsher on female characters over male characters, why it took me so long to not feel afraid of engaging with queer media, admitting I was wrong about so many things I've said in the past, how it's all affected my writing, etc.
When TFS released and I made this blog, I had already accepted my bisexuality but was in no way public about it, not online or in my personal life. But playing the first two episode of TFS, being presented with both Louis and Violet as potential romantic partners struck something inside of me.
Yes, I picked Louis; we all know I'm a major clouis shipper at this point, and if you're new here, then now you know, too.
But it's the fact that Violet's also an option, that with just a few different button presses, Clementine could've fallen for her just as she did with Louis; that there's evidence in game that she shows interested in both of them no matter your choices; that no one in-game judges Clementine for who she chooses to be with... that meant something to me in a way that it hadn't before.
TFS wasn't the first game I played with a bi protagonist; in Excellent Love Interests, I compared Louis and Violet to Life is Strange's Chloe and Warren. I have a lot of mixed feelings about the first LiS game overall, but I've been quite open about my dislike of Chloe and indifference to Warren.
Chloe, to me, is everything I dislike in a love interest, predominately in wlw. 2023 was the year of "CJ dives into sapphic literature and it's a 50/50 chance of striking gold or gettin' hella eaten by disappointment, shaka brah." Meaning I've read a lot of wlw novels, and all the ones I hated featured a Chloe clone, sometimes done even worse.
And Warren? I'll be real honest with you- I couldn't even remember what his name was when I started writing this. I had to go back and check. That tells you what I think of him, no?
So, LiS didn't strike me the same way. Sure, I knew Max was a bi protagonist and that's great, but the choices weren't appealing to me. This was when I was a teenager still somewhat in denial of my sexuality, which most definitely contributed to me being uncomfortable when faced with a wlw relationship portrayed in-game, especially when I found myself wishing Kate was an option for Max... but y'know, "shhhhhhh if I don't acknowledge it, it doesn't exist."
When the first episode of TFS released, I was older, I was no longer in a not-so-great relationship, and had better accepted who I am. The first episode does a great job of introducing you to Louis and Violet, and giving you the opportunity to spend more time with the one you're interested in.
I actually really liked them both when ep1 dropped, but I've always had a preference for a character who is kind, deflects with humor, and tends to be picked on by the rest of the cast... so it was inevitable that I'd stick with Louis. Though I won't discredit Violet in ep1, or the rest of the game, just because I didn't choose her in the end.
That's one of the best things about Louis and Violet as options; they're opposites, yet alike in many ways. They have their appeals and charms. They're flawed. It never feels like a "love triangle" situation where they're fighting over Clementine. Louis and Violet are friends who have known each other from before the walkers came. It's refreshing to have two characters who are interested in the same person but don't go for each other's throats over it. When they do argue over her, it's more to do with AJ shooting Marlon and whether it's safe for the group to let them stay.
I can't fault anyone who struggled to pick between them. When someone talks about who they picked and why, it's all about the player's preferences.
It's your choice to make, and no matter what, you're not wrong for it.

This season concludes Clementine's story, regardless of what some comics will say. It's the last fight. It's her happy ending. She and AJ finally found a home, a family.
I've played these games since S1 came out in 2012, over ten years ago. Clementine holds a special place in my heart. Not only did this important character have a great final season [despite Telltale shutting down and TFS nearly being left incomplete, remember] but she's also revealed to be canonically bisexual.
They didn't release the whole season and then as an afterthought be like, "oh yeah btw she's bi, she has oneline of flirty dialogue with this character so see? we did good rep."
Yeah, I'm side eyeing you, ANF.
They didn't try to hide it. They presented it to the player unapologetically and made a conscious decision to exclude anything biphobic from other characters... which meant a lot to me.

Biphobia is real and it's not that I don't want it explored well in media, but there's something appealing and safe about a game with a bisexual main character who isn't questioned about it negatively; "You're bi? Doesn't that mean you cheat on all your partners?"
To give a compliment to Life is Strange: True Colors, I had a similar feeling in that game, too. Alex is openly bi, she can date either Steph or Ryan and no one questions the "legitimacy" of her bisexuality.
Because that's always a thing on top of everything else, y'know? "You're a bad bi unless you're with the 'gayer option.'" "Bisexuality isn't real, you're just confused." "I don't date girls who've been tainted by a man." "Oh, you're into girls? How about a threesome?"
Violet never turns her nose up at Clementine for admitting she had a crush on Gabe. Louis isn't ever gross about Clementine and Violet getting close. It speaks volumes for their characters and how accepting they, and everyone else at Ericson, are of Clementine no matter who she chooses, if anyone.
That acceptance, even if it's just in a game, means more than words can express to queer players who don't feel that acceptance in their daily lives.
Which means it hurts all the more when it comes to the fandom's own display of biphobia; "You're bi but ship clouis? Why ship something hetero when violentine is right there?" "Well, MY Clementine's straight because she picked Louis! Stop forcing the gay onto MY Clementine!"
Clementine's important to all of us. Why do you think so many people are pissed about the comics to the point of spewing disgusting bile toward Tillie Walden? I've said my piece on that plenty times before, so allow me to say it on this; the representation of bisexuality in Clementine is beautifully woven through TFS in ways that are subtle yet impactful, and I thank TFS for giving that to us.

One argument I've come across recently against Clementine's bisexuality, and violentine in general: "blegh they only included violentine/made Clem bi for lgbt points." y'know... as if that's a bad thing.
It bothers me because A. saying "I'm not homophobic *but*-" and then making a homophobic argument against violentine while insisting that Clementine's bisexuality came out of nowhere and was forced is icky, and B. I know I've said similar things about violentine in the past. I know I used to argue that violentine's underdeveloped, yet the devs pushed it to the forefront over clouis to pat themselves on the back for doing representation, etc.
I don't believe that anymore; remember when I brought up people making arguments out of insecurity? Yeah, that and being lowkey bitter that violentine got more dev attention than clouis sometimes even though like... that doesn't matter? It literally doesn't matter. That's what I meant when I said you get so invested that certain things feel like a personal attack when they're not.
Some of the developers of TFS are queer people. They probably wanted a bi protagonist with a wlw option because that representation is important to them and they had the opportunity to express it, not because they were trying to get "points" with anyone. Go listen to the commentaries for TFS; they talk about violentine with nothing but positivity, and they didn't do that to shade Louis or clouis shippers. And if you do think they did it shade fans, then maybe stop and consider why; do you actually believe that or are you annoyed that your fave wasn't the center of attention?
On the flip side, I also want to say that gloating and insisting that violentine is the better/right choice because of these things is also unpleasant and untrue. It sucks when it feels like things are biased against you and it sucks even more when that bias is weaponized by other fans to beat you down.
But honestly? If you need this much validation on your opinions about fictional characters, maybe you should stop to think about why that is and what it says about you, yeah?
Truly, this whole clouis versus violentine thing is irritating at best, vile at worse. Thankfully it doesn't happen as much on tumblr given the state of the fandom, and everyone's at least agreed that no matter their feelings toward each other, clemricca is worse. So, that's something, I guess.
I think the best way I can put this is you don't get to dictate what other people think and feel. Being passionate is great until it becomes an excuse to be an asshole. Not everyone is going to agree with you and you need to put your big kid pants on and accept that.
I'm under no impression that the fighting will ever stop, even when this fandom is dried up with only bones and memories haunting its desert... but at the very least, I can point some of it out and ask that we do better than this.

The focus gets lost in the fighting, and that focus is Louis and Violet themselves. Y'know, the two this retrospective's about.
Remember when I talked about Persona 4 in Excellent Love Interests and how much it sucks when the person you want to romance isn't actually an option--?
Hmm? What's that? Ah, yes, right- @pi-creates insists I add that TFS and Persona 4 actually are the same because Aasim wasn't an option and they're still bitter about that... but this isn't about Aasim, that's a topic for another day. Sorry Pi, but thanks for the screenshots used in this retrospective👍
Anyway, TFS gave us two excellent choices, and it would've been worse off had it only given us one of them, or none at all.
Louis wears charisma as a mask and uses humor as a shield to deflect. Violet, for as quiet and standoffish as she first appears, has a heart she's both eager and reluctant to share.
Louis is warm curtains of sunlight seeping through the murmuring woods of green leaves and little song birds. A heart carved into the rustic wood of an out-of-tune piano. Music echoing in the early morning hallways.
Violet is the glow of a full moon that illuminates still waters so the stars can dance in its reflection. Paint smeared over finger tips to offer a piece of herself meant to be worn. Constellations of stars named in secret.
They're both lonely people, often misunderstood by the others at Ericson, and sometimes by each other. They want to be known. They want to be seen.
But fear is a powerful wall to overcome.
And that's the beauty of choice. You get the impression of knowing them in the beginning, but it rarely breaks surface tension; Louis is nice and funny but undependable, Violet's rude and reserved and a little awkward. Neither are outspoken about any issues around Ericson, content to keep their heads down.
Clementine has to make the effort to know them, and the game establishes this by asking you an unassuming question: do you want to go hunting with Louis or fishing with Violet?
Clementine either makes an effort to understand Violet's feelings toward Brody and why she's so mean to her, and try to help her through it... or she doesn't listen to what Violet's saying, is dismissive, and ends up making things worse.
When Clementine goes hunting with Louis, she has to make the decision to spend time with him or ignore him in favor of hunting, and should she choose him, he opens up to her just a bit.
Then comes the confrontation with Marlon at the end of the episode where Clementine has to make the choice of who to appeal to. The gravity of this choice is often glossed over, I think.
Marlon has a gun pointed at her head, and she pleas for Louis or Violet to step in and save her. Both are hesitant because of course they are! They've known Marlon longer, he has a gun, and he's using manipulation to scare them into submission; he uses his friendship against Louis, and Minerva against Violet.
But when Clementine gets through to them? They stand between her and Marlon in rather in-character ways; Louis eases in with his hands up, attempting to deescalate the situation while Violet pulls out a weapon and demands he back off.
They risked getting shot. They risked death. They knew what was happening was wrong. They didn't want Clementine to die, they didn't fully believe Marlon's bullshit but were too scared to step forward until Clementine asked them, too. In that moment she basically told them, "I trust you. Instinct tells me you are the one who can stop this. My life is in your hands."
This choice changes them, and this moment ripples through the rest of the season. It makes perfect sense that Louis would be upset over Marlon's death and feel unsafe with Clementine and AJ there whereas Violet sees the death as justified and Clementine and AJ shouldn't be kicked out over it. It's an overwhelming situation for everyone.

I've talked about ep2 and the vote until my lungs nearly collapsed and I saw the gates of Hell over the horizon... but that's fine, I can talk a little more about it and maybe this time the flames with cleanse me of my sins or something.
This is where the fighting really began, and I shouldn't have to say it again, but I will anyway: There isn't an objectively correct answer here, there's only personal preference.
Louis and Violet take very clear, opposite stances on this situation. I think they're both a little wrong and a little right; they shouldn't ignore that AJ killed Marlon, but kicking them out isn't the best solution either.
As a clouis shipper, I happen to like the way these events play out with Louis' vote. But not everyone feels that way. For some, Louis' vote is a deal breaker, making Violet the more appealing option given she voted for Clementine and AJ to stay.
Do you want a girl that's been by Clementine's side from the beginning and was vocal about keeping her and AJ here?

While on the topic of ep2, I also want to discuss the episode's final choice of saving either Louis or Violet and the consequences.
You know how in other games, say like massive RPG's with "good" and "evil" choices you can make that end up defining your character? You know how sometimes people question why developers even bothered putting those evil routes in since a majority of people will choose to be good? This isn't a new topic of discussion, but it's relevant to my point- they do it because the option to be evil makes the choice to be good more impactful. If you do choose to be evil, you did it knowing you could've been good and yet you decided chaos was the way to go, and now everyone and everything around your character suffers.
I don't think it only applies to binary "good" versus "evil" choices, either.
TWDG is great with its "You can only save one of them" choices, even if they usually fumble with the consequences in later episodes.
When I'm faced with this choice to save either Louis or Violet, I don't save Louis just because I like him more. Sure, initially that's why I saved him on my first run... but then the rest of the season came out and I learned the consequences of the choices I did and didn't make.
Knowing that he'll get his tongue cut out if I don't save him makes me all the more anxious to choose him. And I know violentine shippers are gutted knowing that if they don't save her, she'll feel so betrayed that she turns on Clementine and in the end is blinded in the boat explosion, so they're just as eager to save her.
But all of us have to live with the consequences of what happens to the one we didn't save, too. We made the decision to save the one we love at the cost of hurting the other we didn't love enough. You can't save them both. You're forced to hurt one of them in order to protect the other.
And it doesn't even stop there. TFS isn't done twisting the knife.
Mere moments before you have to make the choice to save one of them, Lilly's standing over Clementine with her finger on the trigger... only to then be tackled by the person you didn't choose to spend time with.
They just saved Clementine's life only to be dragged away by their neck, and the game asks you what that's worth: They got captured saving you, so do you save them in return or do you remain loyal to the one you chose before?
And when you know the consequences of both routes, when you know Louis will have his tongue cut out and Violet will have her eyes burned?
Louis and Violet are good people at their cores who only wanted to be understood and loved, and no matter what, you have to abandon one of them for the other... and they are left physically and mentally traumatized because of it.
But wait, there's more. The one you didn't save will always survive to the end and act as a constant reminder of what you chose... but the one you saved? If you don't trust AJ, then you'll be forced to watch them get torn apart and eaten alive by a herd of walkers. The only way to save them is to trust AJ so that he shoots Tenn.
A child has to die in order for you to save the one you love again, a choice you indirectly made.

The ending shows you the one you didn't save, and it shows you Tenn's grave... and it presents a quiet question: was it worth it?
Would you make those choices again?
That's the power Louis and Violet bring to TFS.
That's why the choice matters.
We justify trusting AJ because we'd rather see Louis and Violet live over Tenn, knowing we're taking away the best friend AJ's ever had and allowing Minerva to get her way. We save Louis knowing that it breaks something inside of Violet and results in her permanently losing most of her eyesight. We save Violet knowing that we'll find Louis bloody and sobbing in the cell after having his tongue cut out of his mouth.
And we argue about it amongst ourselves even though it's all fucked. There isn't a true happy ending here, not for everyone.
Louis and Violet stand on their own as great characters, but you only get the true depth depending on how you play. They're excellent love interests because they care for Clementine. Through their relationship with her, they grow as people and find the acceptance and love they're starved for.
It's not perfect, but it honestly doesn't need to be. There was care woven into these characters. Both routes have a wide appeal. That means something to so many people.
I know we as fans often will say we wanted more, we wanted this and that, we wish this was different. It's not a dating sim where the main objective is to woo them. It's not a massive RPG with hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny of their characters. This is a Telltale game. It's a narrative with Clementine and AJ at the forefront, and it's up to you whether you want Louis or Violet to share that spotlight.
It's a story about Clementine finding a home, about molding what kind of survivor AJ comes. It's about Clementine meeting two broken people with glass shards at their feet, about her glass mixing with theirs. It's a game about choice; which glass pieces do you pick up, and which do you step on?
We should take more time to appreciate Louis and Violet. We should share our appreciation for the development team for giving us a bisexual lead with two great love interests, especially since we almost didn't get TFS in its entirety; we can hate Skybound as much as we want for the Clementine comics, but without them, this team wouldn't have been able to finish the game they were clearly passionate about.
We should have more self-awareness and try to understand why we like and dislike things without targeting others.

The Angel behind the Curtain
The Metatron. A character we don’t know a lot about in the show but has become public enemy number 1 - funny isn’t it.
I’ve been putting off doing this for a while because I wanted to dedicate proper time and research into this character - who he is, what he is doing, and how he is being used. That’s what I’ve been doing for the past week or so and boy is it long. So consider this an introduction post to a series - the main parts are still under construction and review.
But here is a shorter part that didn’t really fit anywhere cleanly and was kinda just a side tangent my brain went on - so now it’s its own part. I know some of it has been discussed before but have some new additions with a sneak peak into what is to come

Obviously this has been linked to the floating head of The Wizard of Oz before

But I want to dive in a little further now that we have more instances of this in season two
Now I’ll admit it’s been a while since I have revisited the story so there might be more parallels I missed but for now I just want to focus on the wizard - with some light parallels
We get the Metatron as a floating head up in heaven during the trial -which would have been before/during episode one - where he task the archangels with finding Gabriel - and he almost seems amused about it.
When Dorothy and the others first meet the Great Oz he will only grant their wishes upon the defeat of The Wicked Witch of the West. Once they return back after succeeding they demand the Great Oz to fulfill his promises but Toto knocks down the curtain to reveal that the Great Oz is just some man. He then uses “humbug” to grant their wishes - kinda. Dorothy though is meant to join him on a hot air balloon so they can both go home - which she misses because she was chasing Toto. But enough of that
After Gabriel is found - then fucks off - the Metatron arrives in the bookshop with most not recognizing him until he prompts Crowley to “reveal” him. He then sends the archangels away with a “wait and see” about if they had done anything wrong - kinda granting their wish with them not getting in trouble. He then goes on to offer the Supreme Archangel position to Aziraphale and says to join him in going up to Heaven.
The Metatron is admittedly a better wizard than Oz - he for the most part removes his own curtain and makes sure Aziraphale is coming with him.
But you said we were going into the title sequence and you have just rambled about some old story parallels? Okok I’m going
I've talked before (here) about how those rickety walkways represent Heaven's plans/timeline for their version of Armageddon- but for this we are going to focus on the one in the theatre

Curtains are drawn - screen is burned - the way to the Second Coming revealed
I'm comparing this moment to the Metatron finally appearing in a corporation in front of the angels and revealing his name - the curtain pulled back.
At the last second the film is burned - right before they enter the lift the Metatron finally drops the act a little and reveals the name, The Second Coming.
And now on to the sneak peak for one of the things I will be doing a deep dive into - The Book of Enoch
I know Neil has said the Metatron has always been an angel but can’t throw the whole book away when he himself pulls from it
When we go through the burnt screen we see these mountains of junk and it is revealed they are walking up one that has a throne room on top.
In Enoch 1 he is given an angel guided tour of the cosmos and sees seven glorious mountains - three to the east, three to the south, one that was taller than the rest and like the seat of a throne with trees encircling it, one of which is identified as the Tree of Life - which is said to be given back to humans after judgement
I’m sensing some parallels but for now that is it - tune in later for some more Enoch and diving into the occult

Hello, it's been a while.
If you're jumping in the middle, hi, this is a series of posts where I discuss things I've noticed in the Before the Beginning scene and suggest how they might shed new light on other scenes from both seasons.
Today let's do our favourite thing, shall we?
Let's revisit the Bandstand Breakup again.
Right after Aziraphale and Crowley argue over the possibility of killing Adam, and Crowley turns to leave, there's this memorable exchange:
A: You can't leave, Crowley. There isn't anywhere to go. C: It's a big universe. Even if this all ends up in a puddle of burning goo, we can go off together. A: Go off together? Listen to yourself.
and ever since S1, we've been arguing about exactly what was stopping Aziraphale from taking Crowley's offer. Why, despite clearly finding the idea appealing, it just as clearly wasn't an option he would seriously consider. Was it more because he wasn't able to choose Crowley or because he wasn't able to abandon Earth?
There are many sound arguments to support both and, like most people, I used to believe the truth to lay somewhere in between.
But then S2 happened, the Before the Beginning scene happened, and the bomb was dropped that it might actually be the entire universe that was on a 6000-year deadline, not just Earth.
True, we don't know for sure which is it, and more importantly, which Aziraphale believes, but if we assume that to the best of his knowledge, the end of the world means the end of all material creation, then you have to admit it changes the scene quite a bit.
It means that running away with Crowley wasn't something the angel could technically do but just wouldn't, it was objectively not an option. If it was just like Death said - if Armageddon happens anywhere, it happens everywhere - Aziraphale was right - there wasn't anywhere to go - and Crowley was wrong - the size of the universe made no difference.
Now the big questions are (1) why Crowley would propose running away, and (2) why Aziraphale hasn't called him out.
Regarding the first one, I've offered some theories in part 2.2:
Crowley may actually be right, and it's Aziraphale who's misinformed
Crowley's knowledge of the universe's fate might have been erased from his mind
Crowley could have repressed the knowledge himself due to trauma
Please feel free to take your pick.
I've already confessed my personal HC is the last one, and I stand by it. There's just something about Crowley consistently refusing to consider the worst-case scenario and behaving like it isn't an option. Book canon explicitly called him an optimist but I don't think that's the reason in the show.
Back to question (2) then. If running away was objectively impossible, why haven't Aziraphale simply pointed it out?
If we look at just that one scene, it's not hard to explain.
A: Go off together? Listen to yourself. C: How long we have been friends? Six thousand years! A: Friends? We're not friends! We are an angel and a demon.
You know how it goes.
My point is, like most of us after S1, Crowley assumed it was the "together" part that was the issue and addressed it. In other words, Aziraphale got distracted by another touchy topic.
Easy.
But I'd like to offer another explanation: Aziraphale doesn't have it in him to break Crowley's bubble.
This is my HC right now and here's why:
Aziraphale did give Crowley the bad news once, the very same exact piece of bad news, before the beginning, and he saw what it triggered and where it eventually ended
Aziraphale generally isn't the kind of person who easily delivers hard truths
Aziraphale is uncomfortable with confrontations
Aziraphale understands the absolute horror that is his and Crowley's situation and understands that not thinking about it is often the only way not to lose their mind

Next up for Warner Bros Animation, favorite character from the 2002-08 half of the Kids WB shows with: Mucha Lucha, Ozzy & Drix, What's New Scooby Doo, Xiaolin Showdown, The Batman, Johnny Test (this oughta be interesting since it aired on three different networks with varying seasons of quality with seasons 1-3 premiering on Kids WB, seasons 4-6 being produced for Cartoon Network, and the revival seasons being produced for Netflix), Loonatics Unleashed, Tom & Jerry Tales, Shaggy & Scooby Doo Get a Clue, and Legion of Superheroes? I skipped Coconut Fred since everyone and their mother despises that show (one of the worst of all time).
Jesus Christ that's a lot. Also look given some past entires here, Coconut Fred is being kept on the grounds that it shoudn't be forgotten just for being horrible. like da boom crew which I thankfully haven't seen. So anyways..
Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island: I saw it at the time and it.. sure does exist. It's a half hearted spongebob ripoff. I'm talking about it because it did exist but don't have much else. Maybe I shoudl've left it out but i've let worse shows have an entry. This is just.. ntohing.
Mucha Lucha: IT'S A WAY OF LIFE! Senior Hasbena who just had a fun voice and a great early spotlight episode. The show itself is one I need to revisit but is awesome as hell, having a nice respect for luchadore culture while also being pretty nonsesically fun. While I would love a full on wrestling action series, this one was still good fun and needs ot be avaliable to stream in some fashion.
Ozzy and Drix: Drix if only because he was my faviorite in the movie. This series feels.. unecessary. It's not a bad idea but both frank's state at the start and Ozzie and Drix ending up elsewehere make it feel like the first film didn't matter and it feels weird to just.. not keep the setting. If they wanted kid plots, Frank has a daughter. That gripe aside the series was ... eh. Not terrible, but nothing really super special either.
Xiaolin Showdown: Jack Spicer. The boy, the myth the legend and Danny Cooksy's best role by a wide margin. A fun villian who was laughable enough to never get boring and stick around long after he'd been outclassed by newer big bads. Xiaolin Showdown is one of the best cartoons of this era, one of the best of this action show block and one of the best. I rewatched it in college and was amazed it held up so well. The show is genuine about our four heroes working, said four heroes while having familiar archetypes for the most part, are great characters who are a load of fun to watch and the format of the showdowns is engagin: while it does usually lead to some form of fight the contest format adds a nice wild card to it: our heroes can end up in a game where telling the truth is the only way out, a soccer match for OMi's soul, or a battle royale with all present. IT's a wonderful show I wish would get a proper revivial. And no Chronciles dosen't count, chronciles can go fuck itself.
The Batman: Another one to revisit and i'd say clayface as the twist of him being someone batman knew and trusted is utterly guttnig. I gave up on this one early for petty reasons depsite having most of the toys: I hated what they did with mr freeze and felt it couldn't compare to btas. Time has passed and with the later seasons adding some nice swerves i've accepted the show is it's own thing, trying to be a more action oriented shonen to forge it's own identity from the more moody btas. And it did apparently get better and better as it went and having seen a later episode or two casually , I can agree. Plus I admit to loving the touch of having batgirl join up before batman. Also the movie where he fights dracula is fucking dope and wel lworth your time.
Johnny Test: I'd say the twins for being usually hilaroius. As for the show.. it's eh. I used to hate it

But I now see it as an okay show that had some fun bits, and what I saw of the revival, as sadly short lived as it was, was better. It's still not AMAZING, but it wasn't the mindless garbage it got labeled as either. Nor a dexter's lab ripoff.. I do think they took some inspriation from it clearly, I mean look at the twins... but when you look at the cast none of them really match up to dexter's aside from the twins, whose crush on gil and age diffrenate them just enough. It's not an amazing show but it's hate was overblown.
Loonatics Unleahsed: Look the base concept of "The looney tunes as superhero: could be fun. I have a batman daffy and superman bugs on my desk as I type this. They did skits of the kind. The problem is lonatics wanted to be batman beyond with looney tunes and it never worked as a kid and dosen't work now.
Tom and Jerry Tales; I love tom and jerry but i've barely seen this.
Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get a Clue: The timing on this one as good as i've been watching through this on and off with @jess-the-vampire recently. I don't really have a faviorite. As for the show itself it's overhated like the last two entries and honestly.. it's okay. It's nothing amazing thus far, trying to be venture bros by having henchman 2 be an obvious ripoff of 21. Which wouldn't bother me if they did it right but instead he's just annoying. That being said it's still not a terrible series: the theme song is terrible but the show itself is solid, having intresting sometimes bonkers plot and shoudlnt' be vilified for breaking formula. It may not entirely work.. but I can respect TRYING something new an dhope go go mystery machine is a better version of this.
Legion of Super Heroes: Bouncing Boy: this series kept his goofy powers but also what works: someone who badly wanted to join the legion, never gave up and then threw in his reboot self's pilot skills and flsehd out his perosnality.
As for the show i'm a big legion of superheroes fan and this show is part of what brought me to the clubhouse. It's a slick show that nicely merges the two continuties it had to work with: the pre zero our one from the silver age and beyond and the reboot that helped ground things (The third reboot, yes three and there was a fourth long after, was just happening around this time so only star boy being black made the cut from there), while keeping the silver age namesan dastetic from before.
The result is a fun show that loves the legion dearly, has a great cast of characters and despite being made to have a teen superman show dosen't let clark overshadow everyone else: he's the lead.. but most of the main cast get a focus episode over the course of season 1. I"ll admit season 2 isn't quite as good as due to executive mandates the female cast is sidelined in places and imperix is a boring villian, while superman x, superman but EDGGGYYYYY just isn't that intresting. But season 2 isn't all bad with some standout episodes, the addition of chameleon boy and a truly chilling arc with brainy and an old friend I won't spoil for those who haven't seen the show. This series is a little seen gem that needs more love.
I realized as we worked on this I almost forgot something important, a series that begs for the spotlight so..
What's New Scooby Doo: We're comin after you, we're gonna solve that mystery. This is a hard one as the gang is reinvented well but i'd have to go with Fred, whose goofiness begins. After the great prequel that was pup named scooby doo and the success of the live action movie, What's New was a reinvention of the franchise in an odd way: it goes back to the gangs old actors , minus grey delise making her debut as daphne, and old style of writing thigns but updates it in a way that dosen't feel too dated now: sure the gang does extreme sports, but it's not to rocket power levels and fits for Daphne.
This series also cements fred and daphne's new roles going forward, roles that helped keep the character fresh despite the dozens of films and handful of series to come. Fred was dialed back from teh conpsiarcy theroist of pup, but instead became the bumbling tourist, a tad awkawrd in places and a tad over excited in others. It added nice layers to him besides solving mysteries and bullying his best friend and it left the door open for him to get reinvented a lot. Daph meanwhile, got a welcome reinvention that let her fit into the classic gang better: like her pup counterpart she often uses fashion, her wealth is more displayed (if not used as a fucntion) but her friendly nature and willingness to get into things (or easliy getting into activties she hated at first), all debuted here.
What's New is a fun series: shorter than you'd think, but having watched it about twice with jess , it holds up really well, combinging the usual formula with some fun hyjinks and creative setups. Sometimes it was bonkers, but it was a solid return to form that let the series experiment more with the next few, and deserves more credit for helping codify a lot of the modern franchise.

since i think you mentioned previously that there are a few Scream movies that you like on their own, could you expand on that, and also maybe on what your problems with other Scream movies is, or the franchise as a whole?
I'd have to go back into a dive and re-watch the series to really go in depth which, for obvious reasons, isn't something I'm planning to do. Generally, when I last revisited the movies (and it has been awhile), they felt aged in a way like a good deal of the ironic, self-aware, cinema-sins type of media. A little bit too heavy on the crutch of being too hip for its own genre, too ready to underline how much the movie knows its own tropes while using them.
This isn't to call Scream terrible, and I had a pretty good time with at least the second and third one, at the time, in theaters. More that as I've grown and changed and developed new taste, it's also felt to me that there's a subset of horror filmmakers that looked at Scream, and all they took away from it was the self-aware cynicism and the idea that this horror shit is easy if you just admit you hate the genre. This isn't meant to be the takeaway from Scream, more of unintended consequences. When you pair that along with Kevin Williamson's writing, they just haven't come with me as I changed. Which, again, nothing wrong with the writing but after dozens of pale imitations, plus the occasional misfire from Williamson himself, it makes the source material grate a bit for me.
To me, the Scream is an artifact of its time, and the only way to properly enjoy it is to see it sometime before 2001. It landed at the perfect moment, delivering a horror movie that was relatively low on gore and blood, while also offering sharp writing and a magnificent set of thrills, that nudged and winked along with the audience to tell them it was okay to like this slasher because it knew these movies all have bad plots and stupid characters. It worked because it wasn't those things at all, but also because of how tired the genre had become of the slasher genre, which was long out of date by then.
That said, I think for some people it still works quite well, placing the teenaged protagonists as more in charge of their own lives and less naive than past movies. There's a lot of care put into making everyone a fairly complete character type, so much so that they're sort of a whole new set of archetypes that now get lifted wholesale for every other modern self aware horror movie, and the cycle continues. It's kind of Friday the 13th for a newer era of horror, not a movie that created a genre, but a movie that defined it, and which is consequently unable to be free from the many ways it's been done to death in the subsequent decades.

Creating another digital artwork always fills me with a sense of excitement and satisfaction. As an artist, each piece represents not only my skill but also my passion and dedication to the craft. Today, I'm thrilled to share my latest creation, which is a fan art inspired by a character I've admired since childhood. It's been a while since I ventured into the realm of fan art, and revisiting it has been a nostalgic and refreshing experience. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.
The subject of my latest artwork is Sabrina Spellman from the animated series "Sabrina: The Animated Series." This series was a significant part of my childhood, and the character of Sabrina always fascinated me. For those unfamiliar, Sabrina is a unique character, a half witch–half mortal, who is on a journey of self-discovery and growth. Although she won't become fully empowered with magic until she turns 16, her adventures are filled with magical mishaps and valuable life lessons.
In this particular piece, I've depicted Sabrina in her classic look, which many fans of the series will instantly recognise. Sabrina has long, flowing blonde hair that cascades down her back, and her bright blue eyes are full of curiosity and mischief. She often wears star and moon earrings, which I've included as a nod to her magical heritage. Her pink hair clips are another signature accessory that I've faithfully replicated in my artwork. I always strive to capture her essence in every piece I create.
Sabrina's outfit is iconic and instantly recognisable to fans of the series. She typically wears a white cropped tank top with a pink stripe that reveals her midriff, paired with a pink miniskirt. Her look is completed with white socks and white and pink sneakers. This outfit perfectly captures her youthful and vibrant personality, making her a joy to draw. In addition to her outfit, Sabrina's facial features and expressions are also crucial in conveying her character. I pay close attention to details like her bright eyes and mischievous smile to truly bring her to life on paper.
One of the aspects of Sabrina's character that I admire most is her amiable and outgoing nature. She is very social and tries hard to fit in at school, often using her magical abilities to help her friends and herself. However, her bravery and sense of justice often shine through, as she stands up for her friends and strives to do the right thing. This duality in her character makes her relatable and endearing. Despite her positive traits, Sabrina is not without flaws. She can sometimes be selfish, using her magic for personal gain. However, she usually learns from her mistakes and realises the importance of using her powers responsibly. This aspect of her character development is something I wanted to capture in my artwork, showing her growth and maturity. Through my art, I wanted to showcase her growth and resilience as she navigates the challenges of being a half-mortal, half-witch.
One of the reasons I enjoy drawing characters like Sabrina is the challenge of capturing their personality through my art. Sabrina's adventures often involve her using spells to fit in at school or solve problems, but these spells frequently backfire, teaching her valuable lessons. For instance, she once made clones of herself to join every school club, only to realise that being herself was more important than trying to fit in. These stories are not only entertaining but also offer meaningful messages about self-acceptance and the value of being true to oneself.
In terms of the art style, I have always been a fan of the cartoonish aesthetic of "Sabrina: The Animated Series." The bright colours and beautiful features of the characters lend themselves well to creative interpretations. However, while I enjoy the visual style, I must admit that I am not fond of the witchcraft element of the series. Personally, I have never been comfortable with themes of witchcraft, due to my religious beliefs. Despite this, I appreciate the storytelling and character development in the series, which transcends the magical elements.
Creating this artwork allowed me to blend my appreciation for the character with my personal artistic style. I aimed to stay true to the original design of Sabrina while adding my unique touch. The process involved a lot of detail work, especially in capturing the texture of her hair and the sparkle in her eyes. Each element of her outfit was carefully considered to ensure it matched the iconic look that fans would recognise and love. The final result was a stunning portrait that showcased Sabrina's personality and spirit, truly bringing her to life on the canvas.
As I worked on this piece, I couldn't help but reflect on the impact that characters like Sabrina have had on me. They have inspired creativity and imagination, and drawing them allows me to connect with those memories. Fan art, in many ways, is a tribute to the characters and stories that have shaped our imaginations. It is a way for fans to express their appreciation and admiration for the fictional worlds that have captured their hearts. Through fan art, artists can pay homage to the characters and stories that continue to inspire them.
In conclusion, creating this digital artwork of Sabrina Spellman has been a rewarding experience. It allowed me to revisit a beloved character from my childhood and express my admiration through art. While I may not agree with all the themes in "Sabrina: The Animated Series," the character of Sabrina remains a source of inspiration for her bravery, growth, and vibrant personality. Things Yizhan Made Me Do
It's BXG Day today! 🐢💛
To commemorate the occasion, I thought of making a list of 13 out-of-character things that I've done since falling into the fandom. (OK I'm a bit late I meant to do this sooner, the day is ending soon in a couple of hours).

1. Start a blog
And a public one, no less. I had a blog when I was in my teens but that was private, like a personal diary. My day job already involves writing so off-work I would usually like to indulge in mindless activities. Now, here I am, maintaining a Yizhan blog. I have not even used Tumblr prior to this but I'm enjoying it now, rambling about our fav boys. Writing is not a chore if it's about them.
2. Join a fandom
I joined a boy band fan club once upon a time, some 15 years ago, but I was never as invested in it as I am now with Yizhan. Back then it was just buying some merch, attending their concert/autograph sessions, listening to their songs. Apart from work, dog mum duties, personal relationships, other hobbies like kombucha brewing, most of my free time is now spent on the fandom. My Netflix account is crying. There is just so much to do and catch up on (I'm not complaining). I also enjoy interacting with and learning from other bloggers here. Antis are no fun and some industry news/developments/hate messages are upsetting but ultimately, you curate your own fandom experience. And I choose positivity and rationality.
3. Indulge in RPS
I don't ever 'ship'. What is 'ship'? 😆 I was always a dutiful audience, just enjoying whatever drama series and moving on after that. I started with CQL like most people and I didn't even notice/like GGDD until much later. Didn't even set out to 'ship' anyone but now I'm a self-professed turtle. SZD is SZD, and anyone can see something special between them if you keep an open mind. I wrote about my SZD reasons here previously. That said, GG & DD are individuals, each with their own successful careers. They come first, the ship comes second. That I'm very clear of.
4. Use Chinese apps
Gosh, my phone and tablet are now full of Chinese apps. I used to have only WeChat cos I needed it for work but now I have Weibo, Oasis, Douyin, WeTV, MangoTV, Youku, etc. Some of them are not even available in the app store so I had to find alternative sources to download them. haha..I even have paid membership for some of these apps. And now, browsing Weibo daily becomes a routine. If you wish, you can just get stuck browsing Weibo for a long long time. It's entertaining.
5. Read fan fic
I only started about 6 months ago but now I'm hooked and fics are largely the only thing I read these days, apart from news. But I only read Yizhan or WangXian fics (p.s. calling for fic recs of other pairings!) I know some might have different feelings about fan fics but to me, I really just see them as fiction, with characters (and sometimes traits) bearing similarities to GGDD. Similarly, I separate the platform from the incident so I have no problems going to A03 despite GG's incident. I just enjoy seeing the characters named XZ/WYB having happy endings in many different timelines and universes. While most of the fics I read are explicit (by design), I don't use them as tools to play out certain fantasies or to think of GGDD in a sexual manner. In fact, I really hate fics that have little substance and just go into the explicit parts without plot development. I like those with interesting premises too, like one I read recently where XZ is a serial killer and WYB is a police officer investigating the case but also in love with him. I do have plans to share my list of fav fan fics some time down the road so keep an eye out for it!
6. Willingly read Chinese
Yes, Chinese may be my mother tongue but I don't use it much in daily living unless I have to. I also find it tedious to read Chinese cos the characters are just so squashed together. If I have a choice, I will always pick English. But now, I read so much Chinese from my daily weibo browsing. I even read fan fics in Chinese! Who am I? On the plus side, I think my Chinese comprehension and translation skills improved. I also picked up some internet lingo used by Chinese netizens, which are pretty interesting like doi, 🐮🍺, 🖍. My all-time fav is yyds.
7. Act like a cougar
In real life, I have always maintained that younger men are childish. At least those I have encountered. But look at me now, fangirling over two younger men (I am closer in age to GG, but still..). I even jokingly call them my 'China Boyfriends'. I look at them very respectfully most of the time.
8. Buy merch
Seriously, once you start, you can't stop. At least that was what happened to me, although I'm still quite selective when it comes to supporting their endorsements. I usually go for consumables like food, cosmetics vs collectibles cos I'm more practical. Also, GG says to support their merch within reasonable means so that's what I'm doing. Just buying things that I'm interested to try and not because it has their faces or names slapped on it. In a way, this suits me cos I like trying new brands and stuff anyway.
9. Keeping a Yizhan archive
Photos, weblinks, videos, songs, fan fics list..my phone is full of these things now. I think my Yizhan photo gallery is only second to the folder with my dogs' pictures. But how can you resist when we are blessed with new pics of them almost every week?
10. Camp for livestreams
I'm lucky I live in the same time zone as the boys so I don't have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning just to watch something. But that's the thing, being in the same time zone sometimes make me feel like I HAVE to watch that thing live because, why not? Why wait? Not shy to admit that I once watched a live programme in the middle of work but I made sure I finished what needed to be done. I am one of those who used to pass over Chinese productions, simply because it's a Chinese production. Not in a scoffing manner but I'm just genuinely not interested in them nor the celebs. I was more of a US/UK production kind of person, occasionally Korean/Japanese. Now, I'm learning to enjoy them although I just watch those with GGDD in them. No energy to follow other Chinese celebs anyway. The other programme I'm contemplating watching even if it doesn't have them in it is Who's the Murderer (GG was only in one of the cases) cos I like the premise. On the flip side, now my sis and partner keep making fun of me cos to them, all I do now is "watch China shows". That is so not true. Or is it?

13. Desire to visit China
China was never on my list of to-visit places. Just wasn't interested. I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou a few times in the past for work but even then, I never felt the urge to revisit for leisure. Now, I wanna visit GG and DD's home town, visit Chongqing to see the graffiti wall with Bobii Zanbii on it, eat mala hotpot and try out their sauce recipe, attend BXG events, dine at the CQL restaurant... Watching TTXS also made me realise that there are many beautiful places in China with natural landscapes and all that. I used to be clouded by my disdain for the regime and some behaviour of its citizens but now, I recognise that the country is separate from the regime or a smaller group of poorly behaved citizens. China is a beautiful country and I would love to visit some day. I will fly over immediately on my own if someone gives me tix to ADLAD!!

I couldn't really think of anything better off the top of my head, and I don't know that this is really even a hot take anymore? But like, saying this as someone who does appreciate EoSD for what it did, I do feel it does (or at least used to) get a bit more credit than it deserves?
This may be personal bias talking, but it does annoy me when people treat EoSD as the first game in the series and either dismiss or just don't bother to learn about the PC-98 games. (and this may also be influenced by a similar frustration over Bronies treating older generations of MLP the same way, writing off G1 and G3 because of G3.5's issues) I will admit that it's on some level understandable given PC-98's relative inaccessibility, ambiguous-at-best canonical status, and ZUN's apparent reluctance to aknowledge them, but it still feels really reductive to me. That's also something that seems to have improved in recent years at least, but it's still an attitude I run into from time to time that just bothers me.
On the flipside, while EoSD was what kicked off the windows version of Touhou and everything great that came of it, I personally kinda feel like PCB did more to refine the series and make it work in the long run, both gameplay-wise and narratively. EoSD is a great little self-contained adventure, but PCB brought in Yukari and everything she represents, which I feel like in turn paved the way for the stuff I like about the more recent game's storytelling. (I like that Touhou has maintained this nice balance of deep-yet-ambiguous mythos, with a still fairly chill episodic structure, not leaning too hard in either direction for the most part. LoLK seems to be the big exception, but even then it's still an exception)
I'll also say I used to be a lot harsher on EoSD than I am nowadays; it felt when I was first getting into Touhou like I couldn't escape the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew, and what I was seeing a lot of at the time was their flanderized fanon characterizations, so I was... Not the most fond of them for a while. Since then, it's felt like people have come to appreciate the casts of later games as well, (heck if anything, now I'm the one not in the loop about the newer groups, something about another tengu, and a mining centipede lady?) and I've been seeing more content of the SDM crew that isn't just reducing them to one-note jokes or forced character archetypes (Flandere is not a yandere!) so I've been able to enjoy them a lot more now.
So, yeah, that's my Touhou "hot take"; EoSD is overrated, except by this point it is in fact just rated the correct amount, so I don't have a lot to say here.
...
Watch me, in two or three months from now, suddenly remember or come up with an actual scorching hot take and have to revisit this, lol

ok so i've slept through the night and i think my thoughts on the reboot are more coherent now. this ended up really fuxking long so uhhhh congrats if you make through the whole thing.
do not re/blog. comments are welcome.
overall, i'm still very conflicted about how to feel about the trailer and what v is throwing at us. at the same time i wanna get excited about the reboot, while at the same time i feel extremely underwhelmed. but then i was thinking about it through what i think saints row is.
disclaimer one. i do not mean to shit on anyone's opinion. i really just want to write down my own opinion and thoughts currently, to get it out of my system, to clear out the mess that is my head since writing has always helped me make sense of things. my opinion isn't here to undervalue anyone else's opinion.
disclaimer two. i prefer sr1 and especially sr2 over the later games. i am heavily biased, although i try not to be. i often claim to hate srtt, but srtt still acted a very important part for me to fall in love with the series - i played the games in a reverse order, going down from sriv, and if i hadn't loved those games enough to play the older ones as well, i wouldn't be here loving sr1-2. so. hypocrite, a little bit. only later i started feeling srtt was inferior in storytelling, and that's the first thing. 1) storytelling is one of the things i love about saints row, but that stands true mostly for the first games. in the stream boone seemed really excited about the story they're telling in the game, and i really wanna hold him true for that. i really do. but v's track record with the games from srtt to aom is really concerning to me. but. maybe. just maybe.
another very clear defining factor about saints row is the 2) humor. here, however, once again, i lean towards the more subtle and ruthless type of humor in sr1 and sr2. i've said this before, but srtt feels like a crack fanfic that one enjoys once, in the middle of the night when you're supposed to keep quiet but everything is just too funny because you're too tired. then you revisit the story again in the daylight, and it's just a little... cringe. i still think that stands true, but i also realise that apparently the development of the game apparently suffered from schedule issues. i think sriv does the humor better. NOW. in the stream boone claimed the humor to be (something along the lines of) less juvenile, which is a VERY good sign. and i'm not dumb - it's not going to be on the level of sr2. it's less juvenile, but i don't think the game will be as ruthless as the early ones. they are saying they're trying to find the balance between sr2 and sr3, which i think is a very good thing. i hope they have found the spot that all fans can enjoy.
3) the city. hands down i love stilwater. it would have been great if we got a newly built stilwater, but i guess it's best this way. there's no pleasing everyone when recreating beloved aspects, so i think it's best they're placing the game in an entirely new city. so far santo ileso seems very cool. i admit i snorted when boone said santo ileso will have distinctive districts, that the city will be very different wherever you go. which is GREAT. steelport was always so bland, it looks the same wherever you go. i remember complaining about it very loudly to my girlfriend at one point when i was trying to research the city areas for a fic. the district had the same cafe signs at every single block. i really do hope santo ileso will be as vibrant as they promise. and, i do have to admit, that i was already thinking my boss could easily have their past take place in santo ileso......... which brings me to:
4) the boss. okay so i adore the boss and i was so worried about v scrapping the boss entirely. the boss in the trailer is SO cool and i am really loving the vibe she gives off. i am very excited about the character creation, especially if it really is as expansive as v claims. after the saints row part of ONL i was really worried, like many others, because they said nothing about the character creation. it's one of the things players love, and i was afraid not saying anything about the creator meant there was a set boss. gladly V confirmed this wasn't true. the trailer boss was so cool and i really liked her voice as the boss! apparently there's eight voice options. although we won't be getting rebecca sanabria back (that's been clear for years, but one can always dream), i'm sure there's going to be at least one voice that i'll like for my boss. AND YES. i will absolutely recreate my old boss for the game, there's no other boss for me, no matter what universe.
5) characters. now this is a damn shame for all the fans that love the old characters, no matter which game. idk if v hates johnny or what, but it's been clear he's the one players want to see most. he's a major part of the series, alongside of the boss. i was hoping for a johnny gat cameo, but as far as daniel said "i wasn't asked (for the role)". BUT. if they really decided to go this route, not having any of the old characters, then maybe it's for the best they won't try to sell the game through old characters. they clearly want to start entirely fresh. AOM tried to draw in fans by bringing back pierce, and kinzie, and johnny (my experience with aom johnny was that the johnny missions failed to work at all (johnny was literally invisible like wtf), and i gave up entirely on it. literal rage quit and never went back. i probably should). aom should have been its own game. in the new saints row, i would like to see easter eggs of the old characters. nothing else. if they really don't want to bring the old characters back, then don't. but easter eggs would be cool. something very minimal.
this brings me to the lieutenants in the new trailer. neenah, eli and kevin. i CAN'T HELP but see the old characters in them - neenah looks a lot like kinzie, or the srtt shaundi (more like kinzie though); and eli reminds me of pierce so much. it's like they finally let pierce be the strategist he wanted to be in sr2, in the form of eli. and i'm sorry to say it, but having a trio consisting of one white woman (shaundi/kinzie), one black man (pierce) and one asian man (johnny) is way too similar to the old trio(s). it feels like they've copied the characters' looks and gone up from there. yes, they're new characters with new personalities, but it also feels like they're playing it safe. one or two similar characters would slip under the radar, but i dunno. i hope v proves me wrong, but this is on of the aspects that does bothers me.
another thing that bothers me, is the designs of the characters themselves. however i think this is a problem with video games in general, not just the upcoming saints row. and here i am talking about the characters' ages and sizes. they're all the perfect size, they're all young and gorgeous (and when i say gorgeous, they really are really good looking, i won't argue that, like look at the trailer boss or kevin's hair...... hot). some variation would've been fun. maybe this says more about me than it says about the game, but still. also after all, these guys are supposed to be a group of friends, so i guess it makes sense they'd be the same age. sadly i guess that also means there won't be any need for recruiting the main gang members, which i always wished was more explored in sr2 (i'm talking about the three kings mission, and the "what sort of crew you looking for?" which feels like there should have been some sort of choices you could make). but, that's just my wishful thinking.
ANYWAY. we still know close to nothing about the characters, so these are just first impressions. once again, i hope v proves me wrong and the characters will be intriguing and multidimensional and likeable (in good and bad).
those five aspects are what make the saints row series for me, and from what v seems to be promising, 3 out of 5 of my favorite saints row aspects would be coming true in the new game (can't really say about storytelling simply because there's not much to go on yet).
now, what else.
the art style. i've seen people complain about the look of the game. and yes. it looks like every single other recent game (for example deathloop, redfall and yes, fortnite), but i don't think it's because of saints row. i think it has to do something with what video game engines are capable of these days. but i can't really say, i'm not well versed in this stuff.
and to be honest? i really like the way it looks. as promised, it does feel like a mix of the early saints rows that were going for the more realistic style, and the more cartoony style of the later games. i like it that they're not going for the ultra realistic style either (although i would love it tbh), and perhaps they're sparing resources for the actual city, the activities, the missions, the stories... i really don't want to witness another cp77 (which i still haven't played, although the game has been sitting in my shelf since launch).
a few short ones in the end.
the "self made" thingie kinda bothers me, comparing the saints to a start-up company.......... like. i know we won't see the old kind of gangsta stuff but if the point of the game is to take over the city territory after territory, through crime... why describe it in that way? HOWEVER this is yet another thing i have no idea where it'll go, so this is just a worried hunch.
kinda liked kevin's helmet in the trailer, a nod towards professor genki. nice.
THE IDOLS. THE GANGS. especially the new group. the entirely new group. i am at the same time excited and extremely worried to find out what the crew will be like. marshall is clearly a corporate giant comparable to the syndicate, while panteros seems to be a mash up of the brotherhood and luchadores (and maybe even rollerz, from the trailer it could be that the group has a lot to do with cars? would MAKE CLEAR FOR NEENAH TO TARGET THEM IF SHE'S INTO CARS AS WELL. IS SHE THE NEW LIN OH MY GOD) anyway. the idols are supposed to be some sort of a celebrity/media group, and i wonder how that'll turn out. so far panteros is the only gang in the game and
WAIT. in a way! it feels like they're amping the first three games into one! panteros represent the first sr, being an actual gang to take down. marshall represents sr2, and can be also compared to ultor, a corporation to take down. and finally the idols represent srtt, where the saints have gained a celebrity status and their "brand is worth a shitload of money". omg i love this kind of shit. and if it really is so, i'm kinda liking it already.

i feel like my conflicted feelings come from trying to see the old saints row in this new game but also trying to accept what the new version can bring. from the very first tease it was clear the game will be a reboot. that means scrapping everything, and that's what v is doing. they're rewriting the saints' history entirely, hopefully keeping in mind what the series is at its heart and successfully merging what sr2 and srtt feel like and represent. and hopefully i'll be able to see the game for what it is and not what it could be.
my biggest disappointment so far is the loss of the old characters. they're a big part of what make the series for me. even when i say i prefer the older games, there are characters from srtt and sriv that i like as well. for example i've always really liked kinzie and oleg as characters. asha in sriv wasn't bad either - although she does feel a little random within the series, i've always kinda liked her. BUT. i hope v is properly abandoning the old characters to focus on the new ones. i hope it will become their strength with the new game.
i guess it makes sense right now what they're doing with sr2 and did with srtt. srtt got a full remaster, and they're working on to fix the pc version of sr2. it feels like an apology, in a way. sorry we're doing this, but here's some polished versions of the old one games.
