one of the most iconic parts of how people see him, his glasses, are just another symbol of him being marked (changed) by the explosion. theo didn't have glasses in the first chapter. he got them after getting hit in the head during the explosion. He wears (essentially) the same glasses for the entirety of the book bc its a symbol. he's been trying to get back to living with the barbours (before andy and mr. barbour died) for his whole book because he knows he can't get back to his mother being alive but he does not want to be the person he has become!
