Apollo and Klavier go over Christmas plans. Klapollo week 2023 day 4: family
Christmas was a bit of a touchy time of year for Apollo. It hadn’t been Klavier’s favorite for a while either. The first year they spent together, it had been just the two of them, healing and finding comfort in each other’s company. They’d gone to the Wright’s party of course and made a brief appearance at the Prosecutor’s office event, but this year they were really ready to throw themselves into it.
“I asked Trucy about it. They haven’t planned anything yet, so if we want to be the hosting house this year, it’s ours.” “Fantastich! First we should sort out the guest list, ja?” “Ja. Did you want to, you know, invite anyone…”
Apollo was doing his best not to state what he meant directly in case that made Klavier feel pressured to do something he didn’t want to. Apollo had met the other members of the Gavinners a total of once and at this point figured meeting Klavier’s parents was out of the question. He still wanted that option to be available, though, in case his boyfriend felt like reaching out.
“Nein. Maybe we should focus on your family?”
Apollo recognized that tone as one that meant he didn’t want to talk about it right then. They had talked about it before and undoubtedly would again, they were very good at the whole communication thing after the initial stumbles, and Apollo knew there was a time and place for certain topics. That was fine. But he also recognized this made his boyfriend incredibly sad, and he hated that more than anything. Klavier was loved and he deserved to know it.
“They’re your family now, too, you know.”
Klavier felt that this was something he had known theoretically, but hearing it said aloud by someone else…
“Ja, they are, aren’t they.” “Ja. So let’s invite our family. Trucy is going to be so excited to hear about your new music, and Mr. Wright was interested in that smuggling case you picked up. Of course, if the Wrights are coming, so are the Feys and Mr. Edgeworth. Athena will want to show Juniper off to you, so add two more. We can’t leave Ema out, and she’ll bring Kay. And we’ll need to invite Debeste and Blackquill. While we’re at it, we should see if Miss von Karma and Nahyuta will be in the states. And if we’re inviting that many people anyway, we should invite the Gumshoes… Am I missing anyone?” “Would you be up to inviting your mother… ?”
Klavier had gotten along very well with Apollo’s mother, but that was before he knew everything that happened and that she was in fact the mother of the man he loved. He could understand Apollo’s apprehension. Just because someone was agreeable, even if they were a fantastic person, that didn’t necessarily mean they were a good parent. Not that he necessarily thought she was a bad one either, it was just complicated. He knew Apollo wanted to try getting to know her, mostly for Trucy’s sake, but at least a little bit for his own. It was especially odd for him not having known her until he was already an adult.
“I guess we should, huh? I’ll never get to know her better if I keep avoiding her. We should tell her to bring Machi, too.” “This time of year really has you charitable.” “… I don’t want to be alone. I don’t want anyone else to, either.” “You won’t ever be alone if I can help it.” Apollo blushed and turned away. “You’re such a sap.” “But you love me.” “No. And I love you.” Klavier blushed a bit himself. “Now who’s being a sap?” “Shut up.” Apollo kissed him gently. “Now if we’re filling this big ass house with people we’re going to need enough food to feed an army, so I was thinking we could have everyone bring a dish. We’ll cook the ham, obviously… Actually I think we’ll need two.” “Mm. We should also provide some of the drinks. A couple bottles of wine and sparkling cider.” “That sounds good. With everyone here should we have games for people to play? Clay’s family always did this saran wrap ball thing and pin the nose on Rudolph. We sent Mr. Terran a card, right?” “We did. I think he sent one back in the mail on the table.” “We should probably start actually looking at the mail when we pick it up, huh?” “That would probably be smart, ja. I think games are a great idea. Sebastian and Kay are fond of trivia, I believe.” “Trivia would be fun. I think almost everyone is competitive enough to really get into it. Maybe we should do one of those jars where you have to guess how many candy canes are in it or something?” “Great idea, Schatz, though I'm fairly sure Herr Blackquill will win. He has an uncanny ability to guess the exact number of items inside other items.” “That’s like the lamest superpower ever.” “Maybe so, but it wins him gift cards whenever we do it at the office.” “I guess any super power can be useful in certain situations.” “Like increased perception of when someone is lying or being able to hear someone’s emotions?” “Both of those are incredibly useful!” “They are, but they are also their own weakness.” “Hmm… I guess there aren’t really any downsides to being able to guess how many things are in other things… So what’s your superpower?” “Being charming enough to catch mein Häschen.” Apollo blushed and turned away slightly. “That’s not a superpower, Klav.” Klavier scooped him up and nuzzled in. “Then it was a miracle. A Herculean feat. And the best thing to ever happen to me.” “Aw, gee. It’s the same for me, you know.” “Obviously. I’m Klavier Gavin.” He flipped his hair. “Alright, moment over. I’m gonna get some more coffee.” He slipped out of Klavier’s lap and grabbed his mug off the table. “Me too?” Apollo smirked. “I dunno, Klavier Gavin must have a ton of people lined up just dying to get him coffee.” “Schatz,” he whined. “Yes, I’ll get you coffee,” he chuckled in response.

since you did the prosecutors before can we get exes headcanons for them (like what they would be like if they were ur ex LMAO)? if this is too broad u can pick ur favorite aspect of it (u dumping them, them dumping u, seeing them in public one month later 🥰 etc)
skjdksfnfjnf this is so funny yes!
Being their ex: Ace Attorney rival prosecutor edition
Miles Edgeworth
if you thought he was awkward while you were dating, wait until you see him after your breakup
he does NOT know how to behave around you at all anymore
mostly attempts to avoid you
may or may not pull another one of his "prosecutor Miles Edgeworth chooses death" stunts
goes to Europe for a few months to compose himself and figure out how to proceed
he's especially stumped if you are somehow obligated to interact, either through work or maybe if you live nearby
tries his best to be civil and gentlemanly, but it's painfully obvious he'd rather be anywhere else in the world at that moment
I imagine you'd have mutual friends, so before every group outing he asks if you're going to be there
something may suddenly come up if the answer is yes
*cough, cough* "I can't, I'm sick"
"boo you, Edgeworth"
I'm assuming you broke up either because of how much he works or because he fears for your safety because of your relationship
maybe it was just a heated steel samurai discussion taken too far
Franziska von Karma
oh boy, this is not gonna go well
so cold to you in the public
throws around a "foolish fool" or two your way
grips her whip so tight her knuckles turn white
cries when she gets home
absolutely cannot forgive herself for allowing someone to know her so intimately and see her in her vulnerable moments and then they're just... gone
probably puts her off dating for a while
if I had to guess why you broke up, I'd assume it was due to her intensity or competitive nature
Diego Armando/Godot
this man has many, many exes
not much changes in his demeanour towards you
he's as cool and as smooth as ever, but is careful not to cross over into the flirty territory
you're either addicted to caffeine or absolutely repulsed by it at this point
walking by a coffee shop makes you uncomfortable
don't know why you broke up, but you get back together at least twice before separating for good
Klavier Gavin
Klav remains his good old, friendly self
will drop an album about your breakup
expect a lot of hate from his stans
the media hounds you
you get invited to participate in a few reality shows probably
he feels bad and tries to defend you
offers to make it up to you by taking you out for dinner
you hook up
you break up again because you can't stand the constant scrutiny and him being away for long periods of time
rinse and repeat
Simon Blackquill
there are so many potential reasons why you could've broken up
too intense? scary at times?? manipulative without even realizing it??? spends half his life savings on a fancy katana???? who knows with him
goes full emo
do you guys know that canonically those marks on his face are from crying so much in prison? yeah (they're apparently starting to heal too, good for him)
acts all tough at work, goes home and cries to HIM - Gone With The Sin blasting at full volume
flip-flops between being a gentleman and a jerk should you meet in public
makes a few snarky comments about you and your relationship to hurt you, then has a minor freakout when realization.exe kicks in and he notices you actually are hurt
apologises by sending you cute bird pics
"Look at what Taka did today."
"He's wearing the bandana you bought him :)"
"Please respond I'm so sorry don't block me"
You eventually remain friends so you can get bird visitation rights
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi
acts polite and smiles sweetly, but occasionally ends the conversation with "I will pray for you", not unlike a hostile southern lady
you miss him and his expensive haircare and skincare products
you can definitely live without the 8-hour sermons
perhaps the cultural differences were too hard to overcome? or maybe it was the constant travelling? in either case, you mutually decide that ending your relationship would be for the best
I imagine dating literal royalty would be exhausting
Barok van Zieks
make no mistake, this WILL cause a scandal
no matter the reason for your separation, get ready to deal with some serious gossip
everywhere you go, you notice people whispering about you
"I hear they ended their betrothal with Lord van Zieks."
"Well, I say! Can't imagine dealing with the Reaper myself."
everyone wants to hear your side of the story and any potential dirt you may have on him
Barok acts as gentlemanly as ever, as befits a man of his standing
he's a solitary man, but his solitude soon leads to loneliness and resentment
his consumption of fine vintages increases by tenfold
whatever it is that happened between the two of you must have been major
betrothals are not lightly ended, especially with the heir of a powerful noble family
might not even be your doing, perhaps family got involved
perhaps, his family reputation has been besmirched? ahem
Bonus: Kazuma Asogi
poor Kazuma can't catch a break
Ryu gets a tear-stained letter written on 18 sheets of paper, front and back
"Oh, dear," Susato sighs. "I suppose this means the wedding is off."
while he's no lord, he is a prosecutor in the service of Her Majesty and the news of a courtship ending would be scandalous
perhaps, for that reason, and fearing how the public would react to your relationship (it is Victorian England we're talking about after all, Van Zieks' views are far from unique), you chose to keep it a secret
at first exciting, your secret meetings and whispered words soon become tiresome
the fear of being caught is always gnawing at you
he may lash out initially when you leave him
offers to make your relationship public, to hell with the society
you both know it's a bad idea
"This is all your fault." he sighs as he pours himself another chalice of Van Ziek's fine vintage.
"My fault? How is your poor performance today in court my fault, my Nipponese friend?" Barok spits out. "You have been distraught for days now, man! Pull yourself together!"
"Not you specifically," Kazuma brushes off. "Your kind."
"My kind?"
"Stuck up posh twats."
Gina walks in just as they're about to draw their blades
listen babes I'm a Kazuma simp this is the only way i could envision dumping his ass

Ace Attorney case tier list
so, in the past year, i finished replaying games 1 through 5 for the first time in forever, and also played game 6 for the first time ever
so here’s where i ruthlessly rank each of the cases based on that most scientific metric of all, My Opinions:
OPENING CASES
S-tier: Turnabout Trump (4-1).  I already knew this case, and I still gasped with surprise when Phoenix showed up, and when Kristoph showed his true colors, and when Apollo realized OH SHIT OH FUCK I REALLY AM ACCUSING MY BOSS OF MURDER HUH... what a wonderful, splashy, shockingly concise case to open up the post-O.G. trilogy world.  Marvelous.
A-tier: Turnabout Memories (3-1).  Seeing Mia Fey (finally!) in action is a long-awaited delight; seeing Phoenix being a total dumbass was an unexpected-yet-perfect and fitting delight.
B-tier: The First Turnabout (1-1).  Solid lil’ case with some conventional-but-well-executed humor.  I’ve got a soft spot for Larry Butz.
C-tier: The Lost Turnabout (2-1), The Foreign Turnabout (6-1).  The former’s fine but a little forgettable; the latter has some fun gags (Payne’s ridiculous new outfit, dude absolutely shredding on the mandolin, etc) but is marred by how uh... kinda silly the game’s core conceit is, lol
E-tier: Turnabout Countdown (5-1).  The context surrounding this introduction is just sloppy (badly handled in media res + let’s lowkey retcon game 4 isn’t a great setup), and also the case itself is just. irksome. ted tonate is just fundamentally irritating to look at
FINALE CASES
S-tier: Bridge to the Turnabout (3-5), Turnabout Goodbyes (1-4).  No explanation needed.  God they fuck so hard
A-tier: The Cosmic Turnabout + Turnabout for Tomorrow (5-4 + 5-5), Turnabout Succession (4-4).
The former two cases are what makes AA5 worth it, and they make for a tremendously fun ride.  It fumbles the execution in some notable ways (Apollo’s sudden j’accuse moment feels a little forced/awkward/inadequately foreshadowed, and damn it sure would’ve been nice to know Clay Terran at all before he died, and also The Phantom’s final meltdown could’ve used a bit more emotional heft)... but okay let’s be real, I’m here for Simon Blackquill, and this case gives me so much of him so who gives a shit.  (And Aura!  Condescending obnoxious engineering queen!  I love her!)
As for Turnabout Succession... while I earnestly wish the game had explored more of Klavier’s feelings about this whole setup, and some more emotional beats for Apollo, the case still makes for such a satisfyingly twisty and fun investigation overall (the poison stamp! what a ridiculous murder method! I love it!) that it’s a more-than-worthy finale.
B-tier: Turnabout Revolution (6-5), Farewell, My Turnabout (2-4).
The former does some cool stuff—I particularly like the opening half, where Apollo’s being real snippy and coping with Frankly Bizarre Dad Feelings, and giving Apollo a chance to finally throw down against Phoenix is a blast.  The latter half of the case starts feeling a little... ridiculous? cramped? idk? like, they didn’t do nearly enough foreshadowing about Nahyuta’s whole deal for me to care about his drama, this justice system is so obviously silly and the manner in which the revolution is playing out strains my already-suspended-sky-high disbelief... fun, and flashy, but more noise than signal in the last part, I guess.
As for Farewell, My Turnabout: of course I love Edgeworth rolling back into court goin’ through SOME kind of bizarre emotional arc of Hey I’m Totally Healed Now and obnoxiously preaching about Truth TM.  And it’s cool that the game set up a case where you want to lose.  But the net result is a bit strange tonally—it’s trying set up some kind of message about It’s Not Just About Winning, It’s About Pursuing The Truth, but it feels really muddled when that’s combined with Okay But Maya’s Literally Being Held Hostage Like Right Now, Surely A Reasonable Justice System Has A Process For Dealing With This Obviously Complicated Situation, Right?
but also Franziska takes a fucking bullet (how did I forget about that) and then gets to roll in like Ms. Save The Day so, really, lots of good shit here
FILLER CASES
S-tier: Reunion, and Turnabout (2-2), Turnabout Beginnings (3-4).  Look, the first one gives me all the Fey family drama a girl could ask for, and the latter gives me young Edgeworth being a total shit in an obnoxiously shimmery outfit.  The whole enchilada is here
A+ tier: The Magical Turnabout (6-2).  DELIGHTFUL!  MAGICIAN!  SHENANIGANS!  Like you get to guess the trick behind a magic act as part of the case, how fucking fun is that, and also the Apollo & Athena duo’s chemistry is perfect, the villain is a FANTASTIC bastard, and even the bit characters you meet during the investigation are total delights... Probably the best “standalone” case in the series, in that it doesn’t rely on any emotional connections to previous cases (unlike 2-2 and 3-4) to still totally and completely rule.
A tier: Turnabout Samurai (1-3), Turnabout Reclaimed (5-DLC).
For Turnabout Samurai, I remembered before this replay how delightful the TV SHOW STUDIO investigation and actor-fandom stuff was; I had TOTALLY forgotten Vasquez calling in her mob connections to try and wreck you.  What a fantastic villain; what a fun case.
Turnabout Reclaimed is just good solid goofy nonsense.  Probably receives a boost for me in particular because, yeah, Simon Blackquill.  But then again who isn’t giving cases a boost on that account; they are MISSING OUT
B tier: The Stolen Turnabout (3-2).  Ron and Desirée are so great sighs into hands
C tier: Listing roughly in order of preference: Turnabout Academy (5-3), Turnabout Serenade (4-3), Turnabout Sisters (1-2), Recipe for a Turnabout (3-3), Rite of the Turnabout (6-3), Rise from the Ashes (1-5).
Four of these (5-3, 4-3, 1-2, 3-3) are perfectly solid cases; I just don’t love them quite as much as “thievery hijinks” or “Hollywood hijinks” or other such particularly delightful flavors.  Everyone has a favorite flavor of Jolly Rancher and all that.
Rite of the Turnabout is interesting and connected with the larger themes of the game in a cool way, and makes good use of the divination mechanic.  However, the last bit gets twisty enough to actually be kind of confusing, and said larger themes of the game are... kinda hard for me to take seriously... which, yeah, leads to it feeling a little stilted when it really should be singing.
Rise from the Ashes landed awkwardly for me.  I know it was added well after the first game’s release, and it does a good job of continuing some of the cool stuff from that game—it’s neat, in isolation, to see Phoenix and Edgeworth working together (while still sniping at each other!), and some of the DS-specific mechanics are neat.  However, I just didn’t feel like I learned quite enough about Ema and Lana to care about them like I should, and retconning “(almost certainly true) rumors that Edgeworth was involved in Shady Shit TM” into “actually Edgeworth was totally ignorant of Shady Shit TM, like at worst his crime was willful ignorance / incuriosity, he was just been manipulated by the Police Chief”... makes Edgeworth less interesting to me!  Like, it’s cool to see Edgeworth caught off-guard and under pressure, but I wish the circumstances had been different?  Also Gant’s theme song is annoying as shit, which is petty but hey this is my blog post so
D tier: Turnabout Storyteller (6-4), Turnabout Corner (4-2), Turnabout Big Top (2-3), The Monstrous Turnabout (5-2).
Turnabout Storyteller has some fun gags with My Dude Simon and also Taka, but was heavily marred by Everyone Talking Down To Athena The Entire Fucking Case Oh My God Can You All Just Shut Up.
Turnabout Corner has... lots of fun elements but... look the fucking stolen-panties setup just grates ok
I don’t think I hate Turnabout Big Top the way most people seem to, but I did find the final murder setup more annoying that I remembered this playthrough—bro you were really sure the dude was going to conveniently stand right there and the heavy statue was definitely going to strike a killing blow and not just give the guy a concussion?  ok lol
The Monstrous Turnabout suffers mostly from poor puzzle/investigation design, being too hand-hold-y, and also having a core gimmick/setting that just wasn’t really my thing.  Alas!

Writing Challenge #5: Invisible Ink
Series: Ace Attorney, for @irraydiance. Happy taboo day? Lulz. I didn’t limit myself to 20 minutes for this one, so is it really a challenge? Idk. Also, I didn’t edit this. Sorry bro.
Prompt 7: Trace
Summary: Some things, you have to read between the lines. [Justicykes(ish)]
**Spoilers for Spirit of Justice**
Apollo leaned back in his office chair, exhausted by the day’s events. He had been to court in the morning, gotten his client exonerated, promptly visited the detention center to see his next client, gotten that client exonerated, then headed back to the office to prepare for his appearance in court tomorrow. Since he’d started working in Khura’in, things had been nonstop. Considering he had initially been the only defense attorney in the country, people flocked to him like pigeons to a bag of food. He was used to sleepless nights when he had a case, but he couldn’t remember the last time he’d actually had a day off--or even some downtime, for that matter. It didn’t help that Rayfa liked to stop by from time to time to harass him. There was a sort of fondness that grew in him when it came to the bratty princess, but attending to her also took up precious time that he didn’t have.
For once, he allowed himself to procrastinate as he closed the file he was studying and looked around the room for something he could do to entertain himself for even just a few minutes. A small stack of letters lying at the back of his messy desk caught his eye and he pushed the mess of folders strewn over the table to reach forward and grab them. Apollo had always wondered how Phoenix Wright’s work area was so chaotic, but with the hurricane of cases he was working through, he finally understood.
The first letter was a bill, which the young male set aside quickly. When the second and third were also bills, he was beginning to regret his decision to sort through the letters at all. Entertaining, this was not.
The fourth, however, had Athena’s bubbly but slightly messy writing on the front. Suddenly, the stress that was weighing down on him felt a little lighter.
Apollo cut open the letter quickly, unfolding the sheets of paper in eager anticipation.
“Hi Apollo!” it read. “I know you’re busy, but I hope you still have time to read this letter! We miss you a lot over here and I think Mr. Wright is going crazy without you around. Cases have been flooding in and I think he’s a bit overwhelmed, but he refuses to hire anyone else for the office. I’ve had to clean the toilet a lot recently too. Apparently I don’t clean it as well as you since Mr. Wright always sends me back to clean it a second time...”
Apollo grinned, the image of Athena scrubbing the toilet sloppily in her haste very amusing. The letter went on to recount a few cases the Wright Anything Agency had taken on recently and how Athena had unwillingly become Trucy’s new magic assistant because he was gone. He felt a little sympathy for her, but was glad that she seemed to be doing well.
As he finished reading, he began to fold up the letter to put back in its envelope when his trained eyes noticed some misplaced indentations where there was no ink on the paper. There were just traces of these markings on the first page, and he realized the indentations were from whatever she had written on her notepad before his letter. He didn’t want to invade her privacy, but Apollo’s need to investigate got the better of him.
He took a picture of the letter on his phone to keep the contents, knowing he was going to ruin it with his examination. A moment later, he was shading over the letter with a pencil, making the ink less visible and the hidden contents more visible. When the whole page was covered, he began to read.
“The plane ride home was good. Sort of. I mean, you weren’t on it with us so it wasn’t that good. They had pudding for dessert. I know how much you love pudding. It just reminded me that you weren’t--”
The rest of the paragraph was scribbled out, but there was another paragraph a few lines lower.
“...feel like sometimes I hate you. I told you I would understand if you left and I do, but sometimes I hate you for it. And then I know I’m stupid for that, but it’s not the same without you. I wish you were here working cases with me. I wish--”
That paragraph followed the same trend as before and he immediately looked for the next section of text, completely captivated. Most of the other lines were scribbled out with only single words legible here and there until he reached the bottom of the page. He swallowed, his chest feeling tight as he read.
“I miss you, Apollo.”
Letting out a shaky breath, he placed the letter back on the table. He stared at the blank cover of the folder in front of him, trying to calm the storm of emotions that hit him reading the words she had never wanted to him to read. What she had sent him was cheerful and lighthearted, disguising her sadness so he wouldn’t worry, or feel guilty, or...whatever.
Apollo knew he had made the right decision to stay. He owed it to Dhurke, he owed it to Nahyuta, and this country needed his presence so it could heal, but it didn’t mean he hadn’t been heartbroken to leave the makeshift family in America he’d been adopted into behind. It was just that the worked piled up so quickly and time melted away like it was nothing, leaving him no time to mourn or miss. He had no choice but to forge ahead or he would lose focus on what was in front of him.
He pictured himself walking through the terminal of LAX one day, seeing the smiling faces of Trucy and Mr. Wright standing there waiting for him. Athena... She’d be impatient and throw herself at him, probably unintentionally body-slamming him into submission while his suitcase toppled over and exploded clothes everywhere. But he wouldn’t care. He’d just smile and hug her, knowing he was there to stay.
He tucked the letter away into one of his drawers to read again later and opened the case file in front of him. For now, he had work to do, and the sooner it was done, the sooner he could make that vision a reality.
Word count: 1061
