ep 24 commentary (brain fried edition)

my head is a little empty after ep 24 tbh!! brain is not braining after all the zyc hurt no comfort (-:

some scattered thoughts here and there, painstakingly corralled like cats out of my vacuous brain and into a list (spoilers):

ZYZ is really emo this episode poor dude like he is having a hard time keeping it together it seems. Every other word out of his mouth is depressing as shit, which is saying a lot considering how depressing he usually is already (': I kind of wanted this episode to pick his brain more, give him room to emote in the aftermath of all that. But it almost feels like the character refuses to be alone, like he might spiral if he has too much time to get in his own head. I'm still so curious to know, though, what he thinks about the state of their promise in light of how far ZYC went trying to save him. “He has us,” ZYZ said to WX. When the time comes, I wonder how he'll reconcile that with what he’s asked of ZYC.

PSJ and Ying Lei bonding! shenanigans! I did laugh thank you guys. Also, not that the team didn't operate separately before, but I really get a sense of how much ZYC held things together with how apparent his absence is. It's obvs heartwarming seeing how hard everyone is working to save him (PSJ especially for me bc I love their mutual tacit trust and respect and all the ways they're alike and different), but ultimately it's still so angsty (':

Kind of love the couple instances where ZYC has been referred to as fragile/weak/of delicate constitution (depending on how you wanna translate it) like that's a very interesting quality to assign to basically the tank of your team. Even if the comments are made facetiously, it just reminds me of how often we witness his mortality, and of course how everything about the styling, aesthetics, and content of the flashbacks to his childhood reinforce a characterization of vulnerability at the very heart of him. I saw someone mention how the Cloud Light Sword responded to ZYC's tears and to that vulnerability rather than brute strength, and I totally agree. I love how this "fragile" characterization plays into the whole fate weapon deal. ZYC's strength is (imo) unconventional, and it is his sensitivity, his compassion, and his deep capacity to feel that the sword acknowledges, resonates with, and empowers. Almost like it protects his tender heart rather than making it something he needs to overcome to get stronger.

One thing I will never get over is how incredibly they styled TJR as baby!Yichen, adult ZYC, and Bingyi. What do you mean this is all from one drama and not three separate productions. Insane. I'm out of my mind with how gorgeous every change in costuming is.

A tangential note is I've seen people mention (paraphrasing very much here) ZYZ's demon form being nicely subtle in its eerie inhumanity and tbh I have a similar feeling even just about human adult ZYC imo. Especially when his hair is down and he's got that thick eyeliner on and we get a close up of his contacts, if you told me from the start that he's half-demon half-human or something I'd believe it. Along the same vein, baby!Yichen reads completely human to me, and Bingyi of course completely demon. Something something the Cloud Light Sword bridges the gap something. This point is unintelligible and not narratively based but I had to make it because I've been thinking "wow ZYC elven" for days now.

Saw a tag about yuanyi getting us through some dark times but man they are PUTTING me through some dark times rn help?/

Been trying to put off talking about the baby Yichen scenes because wow I cried immediately. Well, no, I was like "yay! I love seeing baby Yichen!" and then they crushed me into demon dust lol. And then WX had to tell that absolutely precious story about when she got sick and ZYZ had to go like "actually ZYC was probably lonely as fuck" and yeah that's fine I didn't need my heart anyway.

Ending on this point so I can put a pretty screencap here: There is so much gravity to just the short scene of Bingyi removing his mask and dropping to his knees with that anguished and fatigued expression. TJR's acting is the gift that keeps on giving (me angst).

so sorry if anything here didn't make sense, i currently have the same thousand-mile-stare as Bingyi the more i think about how this all might end and how long I'm gonna have to wait to find out.

“Here’s your headphones,” Anthony says, placing them around Max’s neck. “Grabbed ‘em from the EVPs earlier.”

“Thanks,” Max sighs. He’s not too happy about their loss, but they’ve beaten the bucks once; they’ll beat them again later, for the tag titles. He’s sure of it. “I’m gonna go take a walk.”

Anthony nods, understanding. “I’ll text you if we need you.”

Max gets up, stretches, and finds his way around the back.

It’s quiet, but he doesn’t have music playing. He’s about to when someone calls his name.

“Caster!”

Max turns, and to his surprise, it’s Samoa Joe. He stops and looks at him curiously. “Yeah?”

“Got a question about those headphones.”

Max nods once. “Go for it?”

“Those things soundproof?”

“Yeah?”

“Great. I need them.”

“What?”

“Your headphones? I need them.” Joe looks at him like what he’s saying is obvious.

“Why?”

“I’m going to give them back,” Joe sighs. “Come on, I’m kind of in a rush here.”

“What’s in it for me?” Max asks, crossing his arms. Having Joe on their side against the bucks would be useful…

“I don’t beat you to a pulp right here, right now.”

…Okay, maybe not. He slides them off and hands them over. “You’re not gonna do anything weird with them, are you?”

“Mind your business,” is what Joe says before turning around and half-jogging.

Max’s curiosity gets to him, and instead of leaving it be, he follows Joe.

Joe leads him right to his locker room. Max catches the door right before it shuts and sneaks in.

“I can’t believe you forgot your headphones,” Joe says with a soft laugh.

Max peeks around the corner.

Hook is putting the headphones on and closes his eyes, sighing through his nose.

“Where’d you get those?” Shibata asks.

“Stole ‘em from Caster. We have to give them back.”

Shibata just nods. He’s got a hand on Hook’s back, and Max assumes he’s rubbing circles into it.

Joe taps Hook’s leg, and Hook peeks an eye open. “Better?”

Hook nods. His eyes immediately shoot over to Max, and he furrows his brow, staring hard.

Joe and Shibata follow his gaze, and Max gulps.

“Really?” Joe asks, more than annoyed.

“I’m sorry!” Max squeaks, coming out from his hiding place. “I just had to see what you were doing with them.”

Shibata is nice enough to type an explanation: “Hook forgot his headphones and is overstimulated.”

Max makes an ‘o’. “I’m happy to help?”

“Get out,” Joe says, pointing to the door. “I’ll give them back to you when he’s done.”

Max makes a thumbs up and scurries out.

He does get them back from Joe later that day, and Max feels weirdly good that he could help. Maybe he could help someone else…

In the next few weeks, he doesn’t think about it much. He smiles and waves at Hook when he sees he remembers his headphones, to which Hook nods back and tries to look like he doesn’t exist.

It’s by surprise when Max steps into the wrong hallway for a second, but before he turns around and leaves, he spots someone admits the crowd.

Darby’s pacing back and forth, hands on the back of his head facing down. He takes a few steps to a door, looks at it, and then backs away to go back to pacing.

Curiosity gets the best of him and Max goes up, tapping him on the shoulder.

Darby jumps, but looks up and breathes out a sigh. “Oh. Max. What do you want?” He says it sort of meanly, but tiredly.

Max would respond with something mean back, but they’re good guys now, so Max pushes down a comment about how emo is still out of style. “Are you okay?” he asks instead.

Darby blinks at him in surprise. “I, uh- not really.” The stumbling admission tells Max that Darby wasn’t expecting to respond so honestly. Curse him for not just lying so Max could go on his way.

Max looks at the door Darby was attempting to go into, and steps over to open it.

The crowd in there of workers is incredibly loud; Max shuts it in surprise. He looks over at Darby, who’s watching him closely. “Need to get in there?”

Darby nods sheepishly. “Yeah. But something’s- my brain-“

Max cuts him off, walking over to him and handing over his headphones. “Try these. They block out sound pretty good.”

Darby looks at them, and looks up at Max. “You’re not gonna play some stupid shit at max volume in my ears, are there?”

Max almost curses at himself for not thinking of the amount of eardrums he could blow. If only he were a heel. “No. I promise. If anything comes through those, I’ll let you kick my ass.”

Darby feels the headphones and slowly puts them on, readjusts, readjusts, flips them around, readjusts, readjusts, flips them again, readjusts, readjusts. He sighs. “These better work, Caster.”

“I can wait out here for you,” Max offers.

Darby squints at him, then nods. “Yeah. Wait.”

Max salutes, and Darby takes in a deep breath before opening the door and walking in.

Darby’s in there for 30 minutes, and the second he walks out he slips the headphones off and hands them over. “Thank you. Seriously, that helped a lot.”

Max nods. “I’ll uh, see you around?”

Darby laughs. “I hope not too much more.”

Mox is muttering, pacing, probably growling, too- Max can’t exactly tell, but it sounds scary. This is a suicide mission. But he can’t help feeling sorry- he just looks so miserable. He’s in a horrible spot too, whether he knows it or not; the sound bounces off the walls right back into your ears even louder than before.

Max walks up behind, slowly, and in a swift move he reaches up and plops the headphones down onto Mox’s ears.

Mox turns around within half a second.

Max immediately screams and covers his face. “I’m sorry! Please don’t hurt me! I’m trying to help!”

Mox takes the headphones off and looks at them before looking at Max. “The fuck…?”

Max peeks through his fingers. He’s not dead, and Mox doesn’t look angry, just…confused. “Oh,” Max says, softly. (If he speaks too loud he’s afraid of angering the beast.) “Um- you just seemed, uh, really bothered? By all the sound? It bounces a lot in here? So, I thought, maybe you needed to block the sound? To help you feel better?”

Mox looks at him, and Max can’t figure out what it means.

“If you don’t want them, I can just- take them back-“ Max reaches for them slowly.

Mox pulls them away from Max. “Nah,” he says absentmindedly, looking at the headphones. “I gotta give these back?”

“Please? Once you’re done, I mean. Use them however long you want! No rush,” Max laughs awkwardly.

Mox puts them on and taps the sides. He moves his head around, as if he’s testing them out, and nods, finally looking at Max. “You’ll get them back.”

“Okay,” Max says, small, and scurries off. He makes a mental note to order a second pair, just in case.

Anthony and Billy have just left when there’s a knock on Max’s locker door. “It’s unlocked,” he calls, thinking it’s one of them coming back for something.

Instead, Matthew Jackson pops his head in, faking a pleasant smile. “Caster, buddy, how are ya?”

Max stands up, ready to defend himself. “Really? An ambush? Not cool, dude.”

“Whoa, whoa, easy! Relax, kid, I don’t want to fight. I want to uh, make a truce for a split second.”

Max takes a step back. “What do you want?”

Matthew sighs. “Look, I’ve heard all about your, uh, kindness and generosity as of late, so I’m asking a very small favor.”

Kindness and generosity? Max catches what he means quickly and smirks, crossing his arms. “What do you need them for? Don’t you guys have plenty of other headphones to wear and be stupid with?”

Matthew frowns at him. “I’m not gonna fine you for that because this is urgent. None of our headphones are soundproof like yours apparently are.”

“Who needs them?”

“That’s really none of your business-“

“You don’t tell, I don’t give.”

“Are you freaking kidding me, Caster? Come on, it’s a pair of headphones-“

“And if you lose or break them, I’m gonna break you. Don’t forget, me and Anthony have beat you once already.”

Matthew looks like he wants to strangle Max, but gives in. “They’re not for me. They’re…they’re for Nicholas. He can’t think straight with all the noise. It’s bad today. Please, Caster, let me have them.”

Max loves the sound of an EVP pleading with him. “I’m gonna have to give you some ground rules.”

“Oh, come on, are you serious?”

“Yep. One: if I don’t get these back by the end of the day, I’m making that Tesla of yours disappear. Two: if I give you these, I am not allowed to be fined, ever.”

“What if for the rest of the year we don’t fine you, hm? Next year can be a different story.”

“Fine. I can handle that, because by then, you won’t be the tag team champions.”

Matthew growls, but holds his hand out. “Are we done?”

“You think I’m gonna give you these?” Max laughs. “Not a chance. Lead the way to your brother.”

“You’re kidding me.”

“If I don’t do the delivery myself, they don’t work as well! I swear. I would never lie to you.” Max does his best pout and bats his eyes.

“You’re insufferable. Come on, then,” Matthew sighs.

Max cheers and follows. He pulls out his phone to text his boys real quick: If you see me with an EVP, I’m not in trouble, I promise

Max, what did you do? comes in from Anthony almost immediately, but Max ignores it.

They go into the EVP’s office.

“Holy shit,” Max says. “You guys are assholes. Look at this place! Why is it so much nicer than what we have?”

“That’s enough,” Matthew warns.

Nicholas is in a corner, sort of curled up, hands on his ears, and for a moment Max actually feels bad for him.

“Nicholas,” Matthew says softly, crossing over to his brother. He removes his hands and slips the headphones on. “Is that better?”

Nicholas puts his hands on the headphones like he’s trying to push the silence into his ears. Slowly but surely, he uncurls, and his hands let go.

Matthew smiles. He looks over at Max, and coughs, dropping his sweet smile into a frown. “You can go now. We’ll return them to you eventually.”

“By the end of today,” Max warns.

Matthew sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Fine. By the end of today.”

Max grins. “See you losers later!”

It was a well-known fact that every dog needs a doghouse, especially if they are a talking dog who can draw pictures in the dirt with a stick. Kyoya’s not sure why the talking baby is so confused about this. Kyoya has a dog, dogs need doghouses, this dog also happened to draw out the plans for his doghouse in the dirt with a stick he found in the back garden.

“Kyo-er,” the baby says, slowly, his hands pressed flat together and pressed against his mouth, “dogs can’t talk…? Or plan out their own doghouses…?”

Kyoya and his puppy, Snoopy as the puppy had chosen to be called, look at each other. Then they both look back at the baby. Who is also talking. And claims to be Kyoya’s older brother.

The baby seems to take the hint and sighs. He pinched the bridge of his nose and mutters something about Kyoya’s mother killing him.

“Kaa-san won’t even notice, baby,” Kyoya says, rolling his eyes. “Snoopy’s already promised to stay out of the house when she’s in, and to wipe his feet before entering anyway.”

Snoopy nods his head, wagging his little black puppy tail. Not like I want to stay in the house anyway. The garden’s much more interesting.

Kyoya nods seriously and gestures towards Snoopy as if to say, ‘See? There you have it.’

The baby’s distress visibly increases at the exchange. However, instead of contributing anything relevant to the conversation or allowing Kyoya to continue about his business, the baby says, “Why does the dog have a name, but you insist on referring to me as ‘the baby’, Kyo-er? I have a name.”

Fine, if the stupid talking baby insists. “Kaa-san won’t even notice, Fon-tan.” Kyoya rolls his eyes as Fon squawks in protest of the honorific, but really fair is fair. He keeps calling Kyoya ‘Kyo-er’ even though Kyoya is clearly older than him and it’s rude and insulting to be referred to as such by a baby.

Kyoya leaves the baby to his squawking, and Snoopy trots along at his heels. Together they start hashing out where Snoopy’s doghouse could go without disturbing the fengshui of the garden that Kaa-san has so carefully cultivated.

Fon’s not entirely sure how he ended up in the paint aisle of Namimori’s hardware store, helping his surprise baby brother and his puppy pick out paint for the puppy’s doghouse. One minute he’s doing his annual reunion with his father, and the next, he has a new stepmother and half-brother, and his father tragically deceased, leaving him in charge of said half-brother while his stepmother makes funeral arrangements.

‘I need to have an heir, you know this, Feng-er’ his ass. That argument may have worked when Fon was recently cursed, but not thirty fucking years down the line! He’s old enough to be his stepmother’s father for goodness’ sake!

“Which color do you want?” Kyoya asks, carrying the puppy down the paint aisle and carefully pausing in front of each paint slip so the puppy can see them all. It’s cute. It’d be cuter if Kyoya wasn’t so insistent that the puppy could talk.

“What about this one, Kyo-er?” Fon asks. He pulls out an ocean blue paint slip and shows it to the boy, who frowns dubiously at it. 

The boy and puppy look at each other, and they look to have a silent conversation with each other for a moment. Then Kyoya stands perfectly straight and says, “No thank you, Fon-tan. Snoopy doesn’t like that one, but thank you for your help.”

Well that was Fon told. He puts the paint slip back and continues following Kyoya’s path down the paint aisle. At least he can tell Kyoya’s mother that he tried to get him to choose a nice, cool, calming color to match her garden when she ultimately discovers the new doghouse in said garden. 

The puppy suddenly barks, tongue lolling out of its mouth and tail wagging in excitement. It dances it’s front paws on Kyoya’s arm and turns to lick his cheek. A smile breaks Kyoya’s serious expression, and he nods. “That’s a good color, Snoopy,” he says so quietly that Fon almost misses it.

“What color did you pick?” Fon asks, resisting the urge to stretch up onto his tip-toes to see.

Kyoya turns and holds up a paint slip. A very red paint slip that decidedly does not match his mother’s carefully curated garden. 

Fon should probably look into making a will.

“Kyo-er… are you sure?”

Kyoya hums. “Snoopy says it’s his favorite color,” he says with a sharp nod. Then he turns and marches over to the counter to get his paint mixed.

Fon is left in the paint aisle, mouth agape, staring after the boy. “He can’t even see it though…?” 

There’s no way Kyoya heard Fon’s half-whispered question from across the aisle, but both the puppy and he glare at him anyway. Truly a matched set those two. He sighs and counts to ten as he walks over to join them.

Kyoya is not getting anything from him if his mother kills Fon because of Kyoya’s puppy.

Snoopy watches the Emo-Haired Kid build his new doghouse, tail thumping against the mossy stone he’s sitting on. The Bell-Collared Baby passes the kid nails and hovers like he’s concerned that the kid’s going to hurt himself. Like Snoopy isn’t right there supervising.

The doghouse is coming together marvelously in Snoopy’s opinion. The walls are up in a rectangular shape with a semi-circle door leading to the inside, which he plans on decorating with the fluffy pillow he pulled off of the Emo-Haired Kid’s bed and his new yellow, bird-shaped squeaky toy. All that’s left to do is put the roof on- which the kid’s working on now- and paint it that familiar shade of red.

He doesn’t know what the Bell-Collared Baby was complaining about. It’ll perfectly match the rose bushes around the doghouse when they’re in bloom.

“Kaa-san planted white roses, not red, Snoopy,” the Emo-Haired Kid says as he straightens the next piece of wood in place.

Red and white go together. That’s how you get pink after all.

The Emo-Haired Kid pauses, head tilting to the side as he considers this argument. Then he hums and nods before starting to hammering the roof piece down. 

Snoopy still can’t quite get over the fact the Emo-Haired Kid can understand him. The Round-Headed Kid never could, which allowed for endless fun in mocking him without his knowledge and also endless frustration as Snoopy had to result to charades to get his point across. Even then, the Round-Headed Kid missed the point most of the time.

Of course, the Bell-Collared Baby’s continued and increasing concern over hearing only one side of the conversation is hilarious in its own right. Snoopy had missed tormenting people like this in his old age when all he had the energy for was lying in front of the fire and leaning into the Round-Headed Kid’s ear scratches. 

He takes the opportunity to stretch out like he hasn’t been able to in years, all through the tips of his ears and the ends of each paw. It feels amazing! He refuses to ever get used to it again!

His ears perk up at the sound of the back door sliding open and the soft sound of slippered feet walking over the wooden veranda. He turns to face this new person- surely the ‘Kaa-san’ the Emo-Haired Kid has been referring to- and sits, tail wagging and tongue lolling out of a puppy grin. I’m cute, and you’re going to love me.

The woman stares at him. The Emo-Haired Kid continues hammering the roof onto his doghouse. “Fon-san,” the woman says, slowly. “What is this?”

“A puppy, Kaa-san,” the Emo-Haired Kid says in his ‘this is an obvious observation and I’m confused on why we’re addressing it’ voice. “My puppy. Fon-tan has been helping me building a doghouse for him.”

“Has he now?” the woman tilts her head and looks towards the Bell-Collared Baby with a sharp, toothy smile. 

Snoopy shrinks back and decides to tactically retreat behind the Emo-Haired Kid, leaving the Bell-Collared Baby at the mercy of this dangerous woman. The Bell-Collared Baby gives him a look of complete betrayal before he turns to try and placate the woman.

The Emo-Haired Kid pauses his hammering to scratch Snoopy behind the ears as the woman pulls the Bell-Collared Baby off to the side and starts berating him. “Kaa-san won’t say no,” the Emo-Haired Kid whispers. “She’ll want to make me feel better about Tou-san’s death. I don’t care about that though. Tou-san always wanted me quiet and out of the way, especially when he was doing business.”

I have no idea why, you can build doghouses afterall. What more could he want? Snoopy licks the Emo-Haired Kid’s hand and thumps his tail a few more times for good measure. 

The Emo-Haired Kid laughs and returns to his hammering. Snoopy settles down by his feet and watches the woman and the Bell-Collared Baby.

“You let him do what to my garden?! Fon-san, what were you thinking?”

dogging on hs is a full time job and we're employees of the month 🤞 ntm on hs tho bc i will end up playing hs3 if it's ever released bc i need to see my li happy.

im new to rc so i can't say much about the writers but i think what you said does make a lot of sense. when new characters were introduced in hs2 it had the same tone as hs1. i would say there was a slight improvement bc astaroth and hunger were 10x more interesting than hs1 characters but the dialogue and their way of speaking was the same as hs1. like how do you pride yourself on being soo much better than mortals and speak exactly like them? why are you, as lucifer, speaking like a frat boy? make it make sense.

anyway, as opposed to hs, the immortals are actually different from mortals. lane noticing the lack of human warmth and emotions on cains face, despite how serene and aristocratic he looks right off the bat immediately showed us that they're not easily understood and they operate differently than humans. and the dialogue flows so much more naturally in hsr and different characters have their own distinguished way of speaking. (interesting that cain sometimes speaks so formally like during the church scene, but at other times uses mortal slang. just how long has he been roaming around earth?)

tbh now that ive analyzed the flying scene, he does seem somewhat sincere and like you said, they're both only looking out for themselves so they have a sense of kinship. (also love that lane is so unbothered about saving humanity or whatever and specifically said shes only going to translate what she needs... im obsessed with her)

but is it insane of me to hope that he's just being nice for the sake of using her? ive been ranting to everyone who would listen about how much i adore the church scene, it was the exact balance of unsettling and sensual, psychedelic and dreamlike. it had so much tension and i loved how cain was portrayed in it. but he's being suspiciously sweet and protective of her, cute, but i miss the tension 😭 he and lane are some of the most interesting characters ive seen in a while and id hate for them to lose everything that makes them unique to a generic romance so early.

what about your theories on how they could've known each other earlier? and what do you think about cain's past?

it really is just in the book's nature i think because if you look at the massive growth of alice's writing between hs1 and hs2, it's wild how the writing for hs2 still isn't that much better except in certain areas (hunger is masterfully written, for example, and the emo vibe was captured pretty well too since alice is an angst grandmaster)

like heaven's secret is simply, intrinsically, a haphazard low-quality story - because that was the foundation in hs1 and so it's only natural hs2 and hs3 will be the same. and i'm not hating on it when i say that because i definitely get why some people love it but as someone who's a bit of a snob and doesn't like harry potter vibe stories, it's just not for me

i'm living for your thoughts and analysis of hs:r though omg i didn't catch on to cain's manner of speech swinging between formal and informal, that's so interesting?? but YES overall i'm also hoping that we'll get more of the intensity we got with the church scene and that the dark undertone to their dynamic will prove to be an actual Theme and not just a one-off thing. i would actually GRIEVE if cain's route devolved into basic lovey dovey shit 😭

when it comes to cain's past and his history with lane, i... have no clue tbh like that's just how good the suspense is. generally i'm expecting cain to be somehow tied to the event/entity/power that caused lane's memory gap because her dreams are clearly very significant and she dreams of him at the start of the book + that could be the reason why she got so woozy in the church scene instead of him seducing her with his power, because of whatever tie that binds them through that. but we know so little about him and his motivations that it's hard for me to theorize anything about his past. i adore pre-established dynamics though so i honestly think we're in for some juicy shit regardless of our theories. i can't wait!!!

no no no, don't worry! no one is being mean to caitie!! i just know anon hate has been a big topic of discussion lately and it makes me kinda upset seeing the different ways people unpack it on the dash.

i'm such a... idk if the right word is bleeding heart or snake or WHAT lol but thinking about the way anon hate hurts EVERYONE involved just gets me kinda emo because. absolutely no one deserves to receive such awful treatment, but i truly feel bad for the people out there who are so hurt themselves that they need to take those emotions out on others through abusing the anon-ask system. i've grown so much since feeling this way but i can def relate to the anger that those kinds of feelings (self hatred, jealousy, loneliness) create.

i think emo is often seen negatively by others because its so easily associated with queerness, and it can be a little nervewracking going out like that, especially when we pass the age where it should be a "phase". i try to remain in my weird emo mode despite trying to get a very "professional" job, because i think its important for people to see that people like us are able to grow up and do cool things without having to compromise on our personalities >:D

listening: like everyone and their mother i listened to the new hozier songs this week. they're fine! i dont have any particularly strong feelings about them either way yet, i think i need to relisten to them a few times for it to really get processed, but they were good enough that i'll certainly listen again. i also went and relistened to wasteland, baby because of it and that album still slaps. also, this cherry wine cover:

is very good. i also relistened to the staves' album dead & born & grown because i realized i have windows facing west hehe. what else...my partner's citypop playlist was my music for driving home from the airport on sunday? i wont link that one i'm not sure if it's public or not. and then gym playlist this week was just one of the spotify-made mixes that kinda slams tbh, very early-00s to 10s metal/emo music lol

i've also gotten back into twilight mirage after a bajillion years. it's good! none of the characters really stick in my head besides tender sky and fourteen fifteen unfortunately but hopefully as i listen more they'll become more distinct entities in my head.

reading: i finished the birthday of the world while i was visiting my grandma for spring break!

"solitude": hmmm. this one was interesting. it left me with a lot of questions but i think that might have been the point. 6/10.

"old music and the slave woman": i think i might have benefited from more background, i was mostly able to piece together the factions but i definitely had to puzzle over it a bit. apparently there are a lot of links to stories in another collection, four ways to forgiveness, and i'm thinking that i might have wanted to read those first. 4/10.

"the birthday of the world": title story! felt very different from all the other stories in the book, probably because this one and the following novella are the only two set outside of the hainish universe. i liked it. no strong feelings in any particular direction, i don't think. 5/10.

"paradises lost": the novella! i LOVED this one. i dont know if i was somehow exposed to it as a kid, or i learned about generation ships as a story concept from somewhere else, but i often thought about writing a short story about what religion on a generation ship would look like and turns out what i was envisioning already exists. the concept of the cult of bliss felt very realistic and almost obvious in hindsight as something that was bound to happen. i know it's left open on purpose but i reallllly want to know what happened to the ship after it left. i really loved the themes of this one. 9/10.

watching: i watched an episode of the mystery show 'vera' with my grandma when i was visiting lol. it was cute! very kitschy, genre fodder! i liked it! i was very confused because the closing quip/shot seemed to be about the titular character...shoplifting a jacket or something???? like she asked her coworker if she looked any different and he was like ? and she was like ok great and the final shot is her sitting in her car seat and annoyedly ripping the tag off her jacket, so like, ???? not sure if that's a Thing that people know just from watching a lot of it but shrug.

making: iiiiii did not work on my knitting project at all LOL but i did make my neocities site! here she is! still very in progress but hey :D

misc: trip to visit grandma/s and family went fine! everyone is doing well. back to the grind this week.

oh so the gift from my SO: he likes metalworking and similar things so he made me this necklace!

it is, apparently, titanium with embedded sapphire ball bearings! the ball bearings glow in the dark after UV exposure and they're the prettiest shade of teal, it's also a very satisfying fidget texture-wise. he asked me a few months ago what my favorite constellation is and i went "......cassiopeia i guess?? why???" "oh no reason" this was the reason. it's very nice i love it so much

finally, ive started noting down my workout stuff on my dreamwidth page as well! i thought it could be cool to keep track of what weights i'm using over time, what exercises i like and don't like, etc. so that's on there tagged as gains. huzzah

Jokes aside, though, I am excited to get to know Portugal. I’ve never been here, but my mum actually visited Lisbon for the first time a few weeks ago and she was very excited.

There are quite some Marta fics I still need to read (goblin!Baz is still somewhere buried in my Likes), but I am going through them! I read The Vampire and the Boy in the Tower and I am speechless. It is so good. Oh my God, Marta created a wonderful universe with a lot of angst, but also hope.

I still have Klaine Advent fics to catch up on, and I read @snarkyhag‘s WIP. I... don’t really know how to link it, since there isn’t a masterpost or a separate Tumblr tag or an AO3 entry yet, so for now, have the Klaine Advent 2022 tag! Yay, Klaine and Samcedes!

Another cute story is Tipsy Truths by @aroace-genderfluid-sheep​. Simon confesses his feelings for Baz through a drunk text. Oh boy!

Apart from reading fic, I also love reading people’s thoughts about fic. @facewithoutheart​ had a nice extra about This Will All Go Down In Flames over here. (Also, Fuck The Mage, kinda). @cutestkilla​ also shared some Humdrum insider information here. It’s really cool to see what parts of canon have been expanded on for What’s Left. And @captain-aralias​​ also has some behind the scenes stuff here on Four Funereal Weddings and an American Stag Do. I adore the fic (and the suits!).

I am also losing it over the “HELEN!!!!”s in The Wellbeloves by @ionlydrinkhotwater​. This is a comic where Simon and Agatha are siblings. I am so emo about Simon having a lovely family and this is so fun.

Unfortunately, I also come with angst. A post on my dashboard led me to This Will End in Flames by @bloodiedpixie​ and uhhh yeah MCD warning. Simon dies in Wayward Son. I need... a moment... to lie down and weep. I see there is also another installment in this series where Baz dies, but I’m not strong enough for that now.

Now, for something no one asked for! This is another thing that I saw on my dashboard, but apparently a group of people started a project in 2016 called Sarah Jane Neverending, which is an extension of the Sarah Jane Adventures! (Kind of like Class: Ongoing, I guess.) (Whovians, man.). SJA got cancelled in 2011 and it was very unexpected, since Lis Sladen, the main actress, died. Back then, three more episodes were already planned and I know that over the years fans have asked for novalisations of those stories, so that they could at least be seen as canon. That never happened, so I guess some fans took matters into their own hands. I have only read their season 5B stories, aka their version of the 3 unproduced episodes. I will see if I will also read their completely fanmade season 6 and 7. But yeah, season 5B. Damn. The Thirteenth Floor fucked me up in particular.

KYOTO ANIMATION IS SO GOOD violet evergarden is soooo pretty and i love the plot + the soundtrack itself is lovely 🥹 i think it’s a really good example of how you can make people attached to characters in a very short time?? like at least for me personally i felt very impacted by each story of each episode even though it wasn’t anything overly complex or anything 🤔 it also has a really really good depiction of ptsd and the realities of war on a country and also on individuals!! amazing show i could go on forever about it
